By Tara CAMPBELL THE Bulahdelah War Memorial Land Managers have announced the second instalment of ‘One plus One’, a series of interviews featuring a variety of locals with different backgrounds and stories.

August’s session is titled ‘Tales of the Ocean’, with the conversation moving from June’s rural theme (The New Age Farmer) to the coast and oceans beyond.

Jeff Carryer from the Bulahdelah War Memorial Land Managers said that following July’s successful event, One Plus One was excited to bring two locals to speak at the second free session.

Bulahdelah resident Penny Kealy has spent a lifetime on the ocean.

From coastal family sailing with her dad and siblings, to skippering tall sailing ships both overseas and around Australia, Penny has just returned from a 65-day ocean adventure on the Bark Europa where she sailed from South Africa to the Azores.

The second speaker of August’s session is Mark Sherif; a ‘colourful’ Seal Rocks identity

and renowned lighthouse authority.

Mark offers a wealth of experience in ‘all things lighthouse’, and the role they play in keeping all coastal mariners safe.

He has worked on many lighthouses across Australia and was recently recognised for his services to the community with an Order of Australia Medal.

Tales of the Ocean will be presented at Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall on Tuesday 9 August from 7pm.

Prizes up for grabs for writers THE Port Stephens Literature Awards are now open for entry with the closing date being 31st October 2022.

This year the Tilligery Lions Club will be overseeing the competition with prizes totalling $1100.

The awards are for short stories to 2000 words on any topic and must be original works, typed and double spaced.

A separate cover sheet with the author's contact details must accompany each entry.

the International Conference for Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society: ‘Sustainability Across the Built and Natural Environments’.

The International SEEDS Conference will bring together experts from around the world focusing on a sustainability agenda and the positive and detrimental changes that are taking place.

As well as addressing technical issues, measuring, monitoring and evaluating change, emphasis is placed on the environment, infrastructure and buildings; how they exist in relative isolation and the possibilities for sustainable integration.

The SEEDS Conference addresses the interdependence of people, the built and natural environments, and recognises the interdisciplinary and international themes necessary to assemble the knowledge required for positive change.

The North Arm Cove Initiative paper is being presented by Dejan Simovic and Tatjana Djuric-Simovic of Desim-R&D. “There are two main areas of our research: past and future,” Dejan said “The paper describes the ongoing project of ‘recycling’ the plans prepared by Walter Burley Griffin a century ago, and creating

an innovative precinct, based on Circular Economy through innovative, collaborative ways of doing urban planning,” he said.

North Arm Cove’s paper presents the current state of the project and the results as of April 2022.

“Key aspects of future planning and delivery of the North Arm Cove precinct should be collaborative, comprising inclusive planning and governance, in line with a transition to Circular Economy.

“The new framework proposes continuous collaboration between research, industry, and community through the Sustainability Research Centre hub, that would define and govern the delivery of measurable outcomes on three bottom lines – social, environmental and economic – but also innovation/technology and aesthetics,” Dejan said.

Additionally, the paper discusses the sustainable, regenerative precinct for a smart and resilient community, meaningful community participation in planning and governance and the circular supply chain for an urban community.

MidCoast’s Economic Development

By Tara CAMPBELL THE final quarterly economic development update for the 2021-22 financial year was presented to the MidCoast Council at the recent Council Meeting on 27 July 2022.

The report helps to keep the community informed about the general state of the MidCoast economy and Council’s role in building and sustaining the economic growth of the MidCoast.

Deb Tuckerman, Manager for Growth, Economic Development and Tourism says that the Economic Development reports help to outline general economic indicators for the region.

“The report showed that a total of $9.4 million was spent on one day during April, with a total of $324 million spent by locals in the local area during the months of April and May. “During April and May more than $10,000 was loaded onto Shop MidCoast cards and $15,000 redeemed on the cards,”

Ms Tuckerman said.

The unemployment rate for the MidCoast LGA dropped from 7.4 per cent in June 2021 to 4.1 per cent in March 2022, now falling below the NSW average of 4.6 per cent.

Ms Tuckerman says that a number of business events have been held, which brought $50,000 contributed towards community events held during April – June.

“The report built on the quarterly reports previously provided on the successful delivery of Destination Barrington Coast and recognises that tourism is just one of the ways that Council supports economic growth,” Ms Tuckerman said.

Emergency Services Update

By Tara CAMPBELL FIRE Hydrants Local fire Brigades are urging residents who have a fire hydrant on or near their properties to ensure that they mow the lawn and maintain the area around the fire hydrant so that brigades can access the hydrant in an emergency.

Timeless access to a fire hydrant can mean the difference between the brigade being able to save a house and family, or not.

Vitamin Gummies NSW Poisons Information Centre regularly gets calls from worried carers who have found children helping themselves to vitamin or herbal supplements - especially ‘gummies’.

Many of the ‘gummy’ vitamins look and taste like lollies and children have been known to eat the whole bottle.

A representative from the NSW Poisons Information Centre says that too many vitamin or herbal supplements may cause a stomachache, vomiting or diarrhoea.

“Tablets containing iron or potassium are of particular concern - too much iron or potassium can be fatal in children.

“Keep all supplements - especially iron and potassium tablets - out of reach of children.

“Do not refer to them as lollies and remind children they must only have the dose given to

them by an adult.”

Call the Poisons Centre on 131 126 for further advice following any excessive ingestion of any supplements.

Marine Rescue Port Stephens Just after lunchtime on 30 July, the radio room from Marine Rescue Port Stephens received a call from a five-metre half-cab runabout that was experiencing engine issues at Piggy’s Beach.

In the radio room, Watch Officer Howard with Radio Operator Tony received all the information from the skipper of the brokendown vessel.

The base passed on the information to DCO Julian who contacted the Duty Skipper Robert and his crew.

Rescue vessel Port Stephens 30 arrived on the scene in no time and with slick line work from the crew, PS30 had the vessel heading towards North Arm Cove.

PS30 delivered the distressed vessel safely to North Arm Cove and the skipper thanked the crew of PS30 for their assistance.

Strike Force BASTE Officers from the Port Stephens Hunter Police District and surrounding districts recently established Strike Force BASTE which has been looking into stolen motor vehicles and stealing from motor vehicles within the District.

BALANCING work and life for families in regional NSW will become easier thanks to a $37.9-million investment in before- and after-school care.

Acting Premier Paul Toole and Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell visited Bulahdelah Central School this week, one of 35 small regional schools to receive a financial boost to establish before and after-school care in the community.

Mr Toole said the funding would help families access before- and after-school care, no matter where they live.

“This investment will give parents in small regional communities more flexibility and make the juggle between work and raising a family that little bit easier,” Mr Toole said.

“The NSW Government has committed more than $20 million to establish beforeand after-school care services in smaller communities like Bulahdelah, where a traditional service is unviable.”

The $37.9-million investment adds to the NSW Government’s existing $235-million commitment, to help support and grow the before- and after-school care sector to improve access and affordability for NSW families.

“This is about giving parents the choice,” said Mr Toole.

“We know that many mums and dads want to get back to work earlier and if they have before and after-school care provided in these communities, then they will be able to do that,” he said.

The BASC package includes more than $20 million to expand BASC provision in regional schools and more than $16 million for grants to improve transport services to BASC services.

Community Engagement Strategy

THE MidCoast Council Community Engagement Strategy is being reviewed to ensure it meets expectations.

Marcelle Boyling, MidCoast Council Manager for Engagement, Communication and Education said the

“We will focus on this - not just within the Council, but in the broader community. And it is incumbent on all of us

to help in removing barriers for people with disabilities,” Mayor Pontin said.

Data from the Census of Population and Housing indicates that the proportion of people living with disability in the MidCoast region is higher than the average across regional New South Wales and Australia, with 8.2 per cent compared with 6.3 per cent and 5.1 per

Councillors unanimously voted in support of the Plan at council’s meeting on 27 July.

The Plan centres around four key outcome areas, as identified by people with disability, the NSW Government and the community.

Following the recent MidCoast Council meeting on 27 July 2022, an offer from the Australian Lifeguard Service for the provision of lifeguard services was unanimously accepted.

The offer is for the provision of the services to the value of $2,228,391.79 for the period of 1 August 2022 to 30 June 2027.

Lifeguards to be contracted for five years has provided a lifeguard service for the community for a number of years and, following the expiration of the current contract, promptly wanted to ensure a service provider was registered.

During the 2021-22 season, it was estimated that 192,528 people used MidCoast patrolled beaches.

“The provision of lifeguard services has been outsourced by MidCoast Council for a number of years to ensure that professional beach patrols are provided across the LGA allowing safe publi c swimming areas for community members and visitors to the Council area,” Mr Aldridge said.

The length of time and hours of service will vary across these beaches, suiting Council requirements for the provision of services.

The problem is, I hate flying. In fact I haven't been on a plane for a decade. I get angry every time he mentions it. What if I have a panic attack on the plane? Maybe I should just call off the engagement?

We all look forward to the second round of the competition to be held next Friday COVID permitting.

I don't think you actually lied when you said you loved travelling. You probably do love it when you reach your destination. It's just getting there that's the problem.

You have to come clean. It's going to be impossible to evade the truth forever.

Perhaps you can suggest that while you'd love to go to Europe, you are very nervous about flying and such a long trip is beyond the scope of what you can handle.

Instead, offer an alternative: Fiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand or New Caledonia are some closer options.

While on the flight, some coping strategies could help: noise-cancelling headphones, a calming podcast, meditation, and - let's not beat around the bush - drugs wouldn't go astray.

Not illicit drugs, Marie. I don't want to see you loitering down an alleyway doing a shady deal that leads to a drug habit and ultimately a moving memoir resulting in a global book tour that you can't attend due to your fear of flying.

Instead, visit your GP and see if there's anything she can prescribe that will make the flight a bit more bearable.

Your final sentence is perhaps the biggest concern.

If you would consider calling off your engagement before being open and honest about your fears, then I think you have a much bigger problem.

of North Arm Cove, formerly of Sydney, Nelson and Gisborne in NZ, and London

Brother and sister-in law of Bernard and Liz, Peter and Jean (both dec), and Sheila and Ron (dec) (NZ).

Bob and Olive had a long, happy and adventurous life following their dreams.

After emigrating to NZ from London in 1952, they built their yacht ‘Tamatea’, on which they lived in Sydney and Brisbane before settling in North Arm Cove, where they continued to live a full life enjoying their many interests. They will be greatly missed by their family and friends in Australia, NZ and the UK.

Tea Gardens Women’s BECAUSE of rain Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club social bowls was cancelled on Tuesday, but fortunately by 11am the weather conditions had improved and the Final of the Club Championship Major Pairs went ahead as scheduled.

Robyn Beaumont and Judy Mc Gavock had control over this contest from start to finish despite Lynda Richards and Bette Saillard’s best attempts.

It took 9 ends before Lynda and Bette scored a point, the score here 13 v 1, basically through most of the game the winning margin remained on 12 points until the 16th end then Robyn and Judy surged forward, winning on the 19th end 25 v 7.

Congratulations ladies, despite the difference in the score all bowled well.

Thursday 28 July: Social bowls played two games of fours and a game of three bowls Pairs all 12 ends.
