‘Coastal Memories, A life by the Water’ ‘COASTAL Memories, A life by the Water’, is an exhibition of paintings by Galleries In the Gardens member Jan JohnsonFurness.

It opens on Wednesday 2 March and closes Monday 28 March 2022 at The Gallery in Tea Gardens.

Now an octogenarian, Jan has been painting most of her life.

Her passion for painting a variety of styles and subjects has always kept her love of painting

alive and exciting.

We couldn’t help but ask Jan how many paintings she thought she would have produced so far.

“I couldn’t even guess,” she said, “but I began painting when I was about five years old and painting has been a passion all my life”.

“I have been involved with the world of art in many ways and have enjoyed every minute of it, however, this is my first and probably my last solo exhibition, although I have exhibited in many

In a notice of motion moved by Councillor Peter Epov and seconded by Councillor Peter Howard, it was resolved that the General Manager is to bring forth a Report to Council, at the earliest opportunity, which reviews and examines the management and operations of all public and community swimming pools within the MidCoast Council Local Government Area.

This report will review the current contract with the YMCA, examining other options for the management of all public swimming pools within the MidCoast LGA, including, but not limited to engaging alternate contractors, and/ or methods of management, including Council directly managing community and public pools.

“It’s clear we must demonstrate leadership as a Council when it comes to the management of our facilities; we need a clear plan that we can articulate to the Community,” Cr Peter Epov said.

“Last year we had major problems with management and the closure of a lot of our

smaller pools and this is something that needs to be addressed in this report.

“Frankly, this report is about exploring how we can improve all pools in the MidCoast Council area.”

The motion was passed, supported by Cr Bell, Cr Fowler, Cr Howard, Cr Miller,

Mayor Pontin, Cr Sandilands, Cr D Smith, Cr Tickle and Cr Epov.

Councillor David West voted against the motion and Councillor Katheryn Smith was absent.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead thanked the graduates, many of whom are commencing in the Hunter New England Local Health District this month, having already contributed to the COVID-19 workforce response as students.

“Over the past few months, many of these nurses have been hard at work in our District’s vaccination and testing clinics.

“They have done an exceptional job and we are so thankful for their ongoing commitment to our community,” Mr Bromhead said.

The nurses and midwives will commence in the Myall Lakes electorate and will be based at local hospitals and mental health services.

A recent matter in the NSW Supreme Court caught my eye; the matter of Mikhaiel v Breene dealt with the intersection of Family Law and Succession Law. This matter was an application by the former de facto to have a Deed of Release, entered into by the parties, approved by the Supreme Court. The Deed of Release provided that the parties would not make a claim against the estate of the other. The parties had entered into the Deed of Release at the same time they had executed other documents dealing with their property division following the breakdown of their relationship.

Section 95 of the Succession Act provides that such a Deed of Release only has effect if it is approved by the Court. In approving such a Deed, the Court needs to consider that it was to the advantage, financial or otherwise, of the party to make the release; that it was prudent for them to do so; the provisions of the release are fair and reasonable; and the releasing party has taken independent advice – and given due consideration to that advice.

The Court noted that determination of those issues did not necessarily have to involve a hearing; if the application was essentially an

agreed application it could occur “on the papers” – i.e. with written evidence by parties as to those issues.

In this case the Court was satisfied the Deed should be approved; the Court, although acknowledging the dollar value of what was being given up could not be quantified, the certainty that each party gained in knowing they were independently able to determine their financial future, made it to the advantage of each of the parties and prudent for them to enter into the Deed. Noting that the Releases mirrored each other, the Court was satisfied they were fair and reasonable. That the Deed contained certificates of independent legal advice and that both parties were lawyers, the Court was satisfied they had received and considered independent advice.

Accordingly, the Releases were approved. The parties have now finalised their financial relationship both in family law and in succession.

Supporting new local timber forest plantations THE Federal Coalition Government will invest more than $86 million over five years to support the establishment of new forest plantations to lock-in future wood supply.

The Government will look to partner with the NSW Government to deliver this through a grants program, backing in a key component of the National Forest Industries Plan.

Dr David Gillespie said that the forestry sector was a huge employer in the region and growing the plantation estate would ensure that continues into the future.

“This program is about getting more trees in the ground and ensuring forest industries in our region have a long-term future,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This is the largest direct investment of any Australian Government in

plantation establishment for more than 30 years.

“We want to partner with NSW to grow this renewable, sustainable industry so that it can continue to create jobs here and deliver quality, Australian-made products to markets.

“This investment, made in partnership with states and territories and industry, will create local jobs, not just in the planting phase, but in 25 or 30 years’ time when that wood is harvested and processed into a truss or a timber frame.”

The Parrys Cove development includes 691 residential lots, community facilities, a future commercial lot and a large conservation lot.

The development is proposed to be delivered in sixteen stages and has been approved by the Hunter Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel.

As part of this approval Sheargold offered to enter into a planning agreement to conserve 114.2 hectares of high-quality biodiversity land.

This includes dedication of the land to Council.

At the meeting Council resolved to authorise the planning agreement.

Free workshops for Small Business Month

FREE business workshops in the MidCoast region will equip local businesses to make the most of the shop local movement, as part of Small Business Month in March.

The workshops are for businesses that are already part of the #shopmidcoast gift card program and those that are interested in joining, and will help businesses reboot, reinvigorate and get tips on how to move forward in a changed business landscape.

The workshops will focus on the shop local space and how it has shifted in recent times and what this means for local businesses.

Topics will include the results of the #shopmidcoast gift card program so far, how businesses can grow by identifying the card’s customer base, and how to get the most out of the program through strategic digital marketing activities and campaigns.

“Small business is the backbone of

our community,” said Manager of Growth, Economic Development and Tourism, Deb Tuckerman.

“We look forward to energising the sector through this initiative.

“The #shopmidcoast gift card program was launched in September 2020 with a large amount of business support.

“We want to continue this momentum and ensure businesses are getting the most out of the gift card program.”

Council has received a grant from the NSW State Government to host events which support small businesses.

These grants are part of the State Government’s commitment to their 2022 Small Business Month theme ‘Rebuild, Recharge, Renew’.

By Tara CAMPBELL THE NSW Poisons Information Centre have issued a reminder to keep all poisonous chemicals in their original containers.

Poisonous chemicals come in a rainbow of colours and often look very appealing to children.

Children are at greatest risk of serious poisoning - often from just a mouthful.

Management of poisoning varies depending on the chemical ingested.

If you have decanted a poisonous chemical into another container there will be no ingredients listed or First Aid advice available in case of an accidental ingestion.

Not knowing what was ingested significantly increases the risk of serious harm.

Always keep chemicals such as cleaning products, garden herbicides, pesticides, and car products in their original containers and out of reach of children.

Call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice following any ingestion of a chemical.

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update.

Semi-Trailer Crash Emergency services were called to the scene of a semi-trailer crash approximately 10km north of Bulahdelah, near Stoney Creek Road on 22 February.

North Arm Cove NSW RFS attended the scene where they found the truck had crashed 100m off the road down an embankment.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was a male who received no injuries.

North Arm Cove Accident A multitude of emergency services attended the scene of a serious accident on the Pacific Motorway near the North Arm Cove exit on 23 February.

A male cyclist was struck by a car towing a caravan and sustained serious injuries.

He was treated at the scene by local paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Critical Care Medical Team, stabilised and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

Flooding NSW SES wishes to remind all residents to be cautious of roads affected by storms and flash flooding and to never drive through floodwater.

Driving hazards can include mud, debris,

chemical spills, damaged road services and fallen branches.

All dangerous traffic hazards should be reported to Service NSW on 131 700.

Phasing out of Single Use Plastics

MORE than 40,000 businesses across NSW will be supported to phase-out single-use plastics in line with the NSW Government’s recently announced Plastics Reduction and Circular Economy

Act 2021.

Environment Minister James Griffin said the NSW Government is partnering with the National Retail Association to co-design and deliver a campaign to help businesses transition away from single-use plastics.

“Almost every piece of plastic ever made is still with us.

“More than 2.7 billion plastic items end up in NSW waterways each year - wreaking havoc on the environment and endangering wildlife.

“To protect our environment, we’re getting rid of certain single-use plastics later this year and this campaign will help ensure NSW businesses are ready to go,” Mr Griffin said.

Over the next nine months the National Retail Association will visit more than 650 retail precincts providing factsheets, signage, and advice to help businesses transition.

Alongside this, the National Retail Association has launched a free hotline 1800 844 946 to offer businesses, community organisations and consumers advice on the single-use plastic bans.

From 1 June 2022, the supply of lightweight plastic shopping bags will cease, and come 1 November, the supply of single-use plastic cutlery, utensils, cotton buds and expanded polystyrene food

containers will end.

This will also include products containing plastic microbeads and plastic plates and bowls.

Exemptions will apply to people who rely on plastic products for disability or health reasons.

“While we recognise a number of large and small businesses have already phasedout single-use plastics, for many the ban will involve significant change and they’ll need government and community support,” Mr Griffin said.

CEO of the National Retail Association Dominique Lamb said the program will focus on supporting distributors, importers, manufacturers and not-forprofit organisations through resources, online sessions and in-person forums.

“We also want to ensure we engage with hard-to-reach communities, especially small businesses, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups and regional areas,” Ms Lamb said.

“Businesses and community organisations need our help to understand and comply with the ban, but also assistance with preparing their customers for the change.”

National Landcare Program review released THE Australian Government on Monday released the final report of the review into the second phase of the $1.1 billion National Landcare Program (NLP).

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud and Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the NLP is achieving positive outcomes for Australia’s unique environment and natural resources while supporting jobs in Australia’s agriculture sector.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Launches THE Premier’s Reading Challenge celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, with the challenge starting on Monday.

Local children are encouraged to join the party - by reading lots of books!

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature.

First started in 2002, the Challenge has grown in both student participation and completion numbers every year since its inception.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said despite disruptions from COVID-19 in 2021, participation in the Challenge was up almost three percent (440,000 students) with individual books read reaching almost nine million.

“The challenge encourages students to extend reading beyond the classroom where they can read for pleasure and knowledge.”

BCS Primary Swimming Carnival THE Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Primary Swimming Carnival was held on Friday, 11 February.

“Following an initial downpour where we all thought we may have to return to school, the fine weather returned,” said Debbie Booth, Assistant

Principal Curriculum and Instruction, BCS. “All students in attendance enthusiastically participated in all races and fun events.

“A big thank you to Jody Mostyn, Hayley Nicholson and Tyson Oakley who completed the majority of

“Thank you to all the teachers for ensuring the students were well looked after throughout the carnival.”

Colourful Morning Bowls At Karuah

WHILE at first glance it may have looked like a colourful and gentile group of lady bowlers had gathered on the green at Karuah Friday last, they were certainly not gentile while the game was being played.

The Ladies Triples games saw some quite fierce competition.

“While we are all great friends at the Club, there are no ‘beg pardons’ or ‘excuse me’s’ while we are playing our club championships,” Ladies President Kay Freeman said.

Although the green was a bit damp and slow from the week's heavy rains, the Green Keeper had OK’ed the

game to go ahead.

The Ladies took a few ends to adapt to the slower track but were soon dead on target.

“Good drainage only goes so far, I was watching the weather radar pretty closely and any more rain I would have had to call a halt to protect the green for the rest of the year,” Greenskeeper Leon Post said The showers, thankfully, held off and the breeze dried the surface somewhat as the game progressed.

The heads got progressively tighter and the jacks started to be moved around a lot.

In the end, some cracking bowls were being played and the knowledgeable crowd

THE Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) 2022 Secondary Swimming Carnival was held Thursday, 10 February.

“Although participants were down this year, it was an absolutely spectacular day,” said Tyson Oakley, Carnival Organiser.

“As the day progressed more and more students and even staff were keen to jump in the water, which made for some fun times.”

In honour of Belinda

Cunningham, two proposals were put forward at this year’s carnival.

The first was for all participants and staff to wear red in support of Kenny house and that all points went to Kenny. “So, congratulations to Kenny house, the winner of BCS Secondary Swimming Carnival 2022,” said Tyson.

Secondly, a new award called the ‘The Spirit Cup’ was introduced, to be

WEDNESDAY February 23 was the first Monthly Mug for the Ladies’ year, and T-L.Smith won the mug with a 73n from M.South with 76n. T-L also won the NTP, B.Gordon won the Jackpot and T.Stellema won the putting comp with 29 putts.

The Vets also played on Wednesday 23 – a good decision as the rain bucketed down on Thursday.

The Stableford winner was K.Styles with

36pts from J.Parnell with 34pts on a c/b from D.Johnston. NTPs were R.Norberry & J.Parnell.

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 22 February: Just 19 bowlers today who played two games of two bowls, Triples 21 ends and a game of Fours 18 ends with Jan Coomer playing ‘swinger lead’, as luck would have it no teams completed the set number of ends due to a massive thunderstorm.

Francis Betar, Dawn Jones and Judy McGavock gave Dawn May, Dot Dallas and Maynie Roberts a lesson in how to play bowls winning by 21 shots, 28 v 7.

A big win also to Jan Coomer, Pam Gilchrist, Lynne Green and Deyonne Page 18 v Jan, Maureen Campbell, Judi Polak and Bette Saillard 10.

A similar tale on the next rink Sheila Rattray, Ingrid Luck and Karen McPhie defeating Irene Roberts, Jean Glover and Lynda Richards 22 v 11.

The winners by drawing a card were Sheila, Ingrid and Karen.

Judi Polak was the winner of the raffle many thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

THE ‘Give Golf A Go’ program is once again underway at the Hawks Nest Golf Club with up to 16 new ladies trying their hand at the game and being tutored by the club’s Professional Andrew McCormack.

This is an opportunity for any ladies who would like to just have a try at the basics of golf and to see if they would enjoy the game – before taking the next step to join the club and participate in the ladies competitions.

It is being promoted to encourage ladies to get out into the fresh air, improve your fitness and encourage new friendships.
