By Tara CAMPBELL ANNIE Fowler has been awarded the Tea Gardens Lions Club Citizen of the Year.

For many years Annie has volunteered with the local Free Clinic Bus, dedicating her services to the charity, including time spent as the Head Coordinator for the service.

Annie coordinates over 30 volunteer drivers to transport local patients to medical appointments, whilst also organising uniforms, badges and advertising materials.

The Clinic Bus provides a free form of transportation allowing people to attend visits for optical, dental, X-Ray, radiation, pathology clinics alongside visits to patients in hospitals and out of town nursing homes with carers.

“From the thousands of people who have used the Free Clinic Bus over the years and the community in general, we thank Annie for her energy and commitment to this service.

“It is a huge commitment over all these years and is well worthy of our recognition,” Peter said.

Swan Bay Action Group

THE Swan Bay community has come together to create its first Swan Bay Action Group Committee.

The group has been founded as members of the community see a need for greater representation of the area when dealing with Council, Police and other organisations to assist them in meeting the needs of the community.

Chloe is an active participant in several activities in the community, dedicating her time to improve and assist all facilities and groups.

She volunteers at Meals on Wheels kitchen two days a week, Newstart Juice Bar, Delhuntie Bulahdelah Fellowship and at the Taree Adventist Youth Group where Chloe is a singer and entertainment supervisor for young children’s activities.

As a result of dedication of countless hours, energy and commitment to the area, Chloe was awarded Young Citizen of the Year at a belated Australia Day

award.

Memorial Flag stolen

By Tara CAMPBELL AN Aboriginal flag from an Indigenous memorial in Pindimar has been stolen.

Just before 11:30am on Monday 4 October 2021, emergency services were called to Pindimar Road near Myall Way, Pindimar, after reports of a Subaru Forester and a Nissan Dualis collided.

Following investigations, a 46-year-old Pindimar man was charged with a number of offences relating to the accident.

Tragically, a 64-year-old woman, Jackie Sainsbury from Bundabah died at the scene.

A memorial for the woman was set up, featuring a large Aboriginal flag to pay respect to both herself and her family’s heritage.

On 26 January 2022, Australia Day, there were reports of the flag missing from the memorial at the site of the accident.

“My eldest sister had driven up to Bundabah on 26 January as this was the first time she was ready to drive past the site.

“The reason we made a memorial site that site a memorial for our Guni ‘mother’ is because many of our family and friends of Guni drive past the site every day.

Dal, who was one of Guni’s best friends, had asked me if it would be okay if she created a place where my stepdad, uncle and locals could go and sit and have a beer with Mum,” Mrs Smith said.

The family agreed and organised an Aboriginal flag to be taken to the site and placed alongside windchimes and stakes on 28 December 2021, a significant day for the family.

“It truly was a beautiful site, considering the heartache and anger we were feeling.

“For the flag to be there untouched for almost a month, then be stolen on Australia Day is disgusting.

“The flag wasn’t placed there to upset anyone, it was placed there for personal reasons,” Mrs Smith said.

A replacement flag is being sourced, however the community of Pindimar and Bundabah, and Jackie’s family are devastated by the lack of respect for the memorial.

I have recently reached a milestone of practicing as a solicitor for 20 years. Whilst still ‘a babe’ compared to many in the profession, I take this opportunity to reflect on some of the changes I have seen in practice over this time.

One of the first jobs you have as a novice solicitor is completing research tasks.

Although 2002 was in the new millennium (with the world not having ended with the Y2K bug), this still involved going to the firm’s legal library and flicking through the pages of the loose leaf service to find the legislation or case you were after. Now these hardback texts of wisdom serve as nothing more than a classy background for a lawyers’ office and a reminder of how we use to find our answers.

Communication has also changed immensely.

You would start your day by looking through your mail and separating cheques for

banking. Now receiving mail is a novelty, which is probably a good thing given Australia Post has actually managed to regress over this period. I have also been asked nonjokingly on more than one occasion ‘what is a cheque?’.

Email is of course now the main form of communication and I try to discipline myself to not read my emails on my mobile device distracted from the family over breakfast.

I also remember having discussions with older practitioners as to how us young ones could never appreciate how things used to get done without the instantaneous communication of the venerable fax machine, as the previous method had of course been to use carrier pigeons. Fax machines now seem consigned for some reason to medical practices, I’m not sure why?

THE North Arm Cove Rate Payers Association (NACRPA) are a group of landowners in North Arm Cove whose land is currently under a paper subdivision status.

Creating the North Arm Cove Initiative, a revisitation on the plans of Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin for the North Arm Cove paper subdivisions, the association has the goal of preserving and developing North Arm Cove as part of Australia’s urban heritage, and building a sustainable and resilient community in the area fit for the 21st century.

Dejan Simovic, an architect and a member of NACRPA, believes that a sustainable, developed future can be on the cards for North Arm Cove.

“North Arm Cove Initiative has assembled a professional team of international experts on smart, sustainable, net-zero, innovative development and is proposing the North Arm Cove project for State Government funding.

“We are proposing a new approach to planning and community involvement, in order to avoid the influence of big developers a ‘citizen's jury’ is already implemented in resolving planning issues,” Mr Simovic said.

With the changes to government and ministerial roles in late 2021, the Greater Sydney Commission has developed a plan to deal with the mega-region of six cities from Wollongong to Greater Newcastle.

“As many might know, Greater Newcastle includes the region of Port Stephens, including Council waterways of North Arm Cove.

“For our association, it makes sense that planning of the whole of Port Stephens Bay be one, and that something that was meant to be ‘New York of Australia’ deserves to be included in this planning,” Mr Simovic said.

NEW finalists for the 2021 MidCoast Business awards have been announced.

Following a recount within the evaluation system, four additional businesses in the MidCoast have been added, bringing the list of category finalists to 31 businesses.

Supported by the MidCoast Business Chamber and covering the Business Chambers of Taree, Forster Tuncurry, Wingham, Harrington, Gloucester, Old Bar, Myall Lakes and Bulahdelah, the awards provide an opportunity to recognise and reward amazing businesses whose passion, determination and innovation inspire other local businesses and local businesspeople.

Planning for bulky waste clean-up AHEAD of this year’s bulky waste collection, MidCoast Council are calling on Myall Coast residents to help keep their region attractive and safe during the cleanup.

If you plan on doing a clean out at home, now’s the time to familiarise yourself with Council’s guidelines for bulky waste collection.

“We know locals look forward to the bulky waste collection, but there are rules and guidelines in place that we ask everyone to follow,” explained Paul De Szell, Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“People often start placing waste outside their property the minute we announce collection dates, making our neighbourhoods unattractive and sometimes dangerous.

“For everyone’s benefit it’s important that you don’t put your waste out ahead of the dates specified for your zone.”

Place your waste out two days before your zone’s scheduled pick-up.

Any earlier and it will be considered illegal dumping and could result in a fine.

Waste must be separated into two piles.

One for scrap metal and whitegoods, and a separate pile for general and electronic waste.

Scrap metal is collected for recycling.

All other waste is sent to landfill.

“We also ask that you consider the environment when putting out our waste.

“For example, electronic waste can be recycled for free at our Community Recycling Centres any time,” added Mr De Szell.

Mattresses are not collected as part of the bulky waste service.

However, a maximum of two wirespring mattresses or one mattress and bed base per household can be dropped off for free at your nearest Waste Management Centre during the bulky waste collection

Mr Gillespie also said it was important “that all Australians can mark the day in a way that is right for them”.

“We can also be very proud today of most of our nation’s history,” he said.

“Yes, there are parts that are less than perfect, and we should talk about that openly and honestly, but none of it means we should hang our heads, or try to change our history.”

Adding Up The Impact Of Development On The Environment

Port Stephens is fortunate to be home to the iconic koala however the species is in crisis with extinction forecast for 2050 unless drastic action is taken.

PORT Stephens is fortunate to be home to the iconic koala however the species is in crisis with extinction forecast for 2050 unless drastic action is taken.

Koala Koalition EcoNetwork Port Stephens (KKEPS) was formed last year.

The organisation's primary goal is to protect and grow the koala population in Port Stephens; with one strategy being to identify legislative/policy restraints and contradictions to real protections, and lobby for improvement.

KKEPS has written a number of submissions against habitat destruction as group members believe the cumulative impacts on our environment has been largely ignored, at all levels of government.

There are a substantial number of existing and proposed hard rock quarries or extensions in our area, some of which require koala habitat removal, as well as many direct and indirect impacts on fauna and residents.

KKEPS spokesperson Caitlin Spiller told News Of The Area, “When you consider the cumulative impacts of these quarries along with the growth of sand mines and housing developments, both already approved and proposed, it paints a very sad picture for our koalas.

“The saying ‘death by 1000 cuts’ has long been used about our threatened species and it's never been more obvious here in Port Stephens, where the koala population has reduced as a direct result of approved clear fell developments.”

ecologist Georgina Cutler said, “The combined effect of multiple developments can have a significant effect on the wider regional environment resulting in habitat degradation and the fragmentation of key species populations.

“Direct impacts from quarries and building developments include the reduction of overall habitat available, noise disturbance, reduction in air quality, while further indirect impacts from supporting infrastructure and roads can result in the isolation of habitats and species.

“Highways and increased traffic can pose a significant threat to wildlife by influencing both animal movements and mortality risk.

“The need for ecological connectivity is fundamental in conserving wildlife as it

allows individuals to move among core habitat areas, providing stability to regional populations.

“It is inevitable that each new development requiring clear felling has implications to local species populations, therefore it is fundamental to assess the impact from a regional perspective,” Ms Cutler added.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has recently published the Cumulative Impact Assessment Guidelines for State Significant Projects (2021), which states that ‘Cumulative impacts are a result of incremental, sustained and combined effects of human action and natural variations over time and can be both positive and negative’.

‘They can be caused by the compounding effects of a single project or multiple projects in an area, and by the accumulation of effects from past, current and future

activities as they arise.

‘These guidelines outline the new requirement of Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA) at the strategic-level and sitespecific level of State Significant Projects.’

While KKEPS welcomes this new requirement, many local rock, sand and housing proposals have escaped its requirement - those that aren't State Significant Projects and those with Environmental Assessment Requirements issued before 1 October 2021, and for Environmental Impact Statements received on or before 31 March 2022.

“For too long site specific mitigation measures have not taken into account past or future neighbouring developments.

“Essential to managing cumulative effects is the establishment of common goals and specific thresholds for acceptable impacts, coordinated across all

relevant stakeholders.”

“Without this coordination and assessments it is difficult to demonstrate that while any single development may have a negligible impact, the accumulation of multiple developments within the same region may constitute a major impact,” Ms Cutler warned.

KKEPS has welcomed the statement in the new Guidelines which reads ‘Managing cumulative impacts is a shared responsibility – involving all three levels of government working closely with industry and the community – and is a major factor in all government decision-making’.

“KKEPS is calling on Port Stephens Council to consider cumulative impacts in its planning instruments and require CIA’s at the local planning and consent level, before it's too late for koalas and other threatened species here,” Caitlin urged.

Melbourne-made series La Brea, premiering tonight, leans heavily into the sci-fi, while also indulging in a wallop of disaster drama. When an enormous sinkhole suddenly opens up in Los Angeles, hundreds of people fall into an unexplainable primeval world. The Absolutely Fabulous star charts Australian-born conservationist Sacha Dench’s quest to raise awareness about climate change. Dench got her nickname after following a flock of swans on their three-month migration journey, from Arctic Russia to England, to understand why the birds’ population is dropping. In this film, Dench uses the same method of transportation – a paramotor is like a battery powered hangglider – to journey around the British coast, while Lumley follows her on land.

Federal grants of up to $70,000 for local Agricultural Shows and Field Days FEDERAL grant funding of up to $70,000 is available for local agricultural shows and field days.

The Federal Coalition Government is supporting local show societies and organising committees who had their events cancelled last year because of Covid.

Applications under round two of the Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days program are open from tomorrow 28 January through to 17 February 2022.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said eligible applicants would be able to claim for expenditure incurred last year.

“For events cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, there is funding available, depending on the size of your event,” Dr Gillespie said.

Surviving Natural Disasters Builds Resilience

NATURAL disasters are increasing with wild weather patterns leading to bushfires, storms and floods.

A national survey has revealed that over half of those surveyed said they wouldn’t cope well, or at all, if they experienced a natural disaster event in the next

year.

Furthermore, almost one-third of people in high disaster risk areas believe their community was not prepared for future disasters.

The study also found that experiencing a disaster greatly influenced how prepared and confident people felt about the future, with 71% of disaster

survivors confident their communities were prepared for the next disaster, compared with 51% of those who have never experienced one.

The survey highlights the need to better support communities to build preparedness and resilience strategies that can be drawn upon in times of disaster.

Australians who have lived through a natural disaster are more confident to face one again, but many feel ill-prepared and unable to cope if disaster were to strike within the next year, a national survey found.

The study found that experiencing a disaster greatly influenced how prepared and resilient people felt if disaster struck again.

When asked about future disasters, 67% said they would cope ‘well’ or ‘very

well’, compared to 48% of those who had never experienced disaster.

But some respondents living in disaster-prone areas were completely unaware of their level of risk, and almost half of all respondents indicated they did not feel their community was prepared for a natural disaster.

With natural disasters projected to increase in frequency and intensity, Fire to Flourish CEO Briony Rogers said the study shines a light on the need for increased and ongoing investment in initiatives that build community resilience and support a communityled approach to recovery when disaster does occur.

“Our survey revealed that a significant portion of the Australian community do not feel prepared for a natural disaster, and feel that their household and community will have low resilience in

the event a disaster hits,” Monash University Associate Professor Rogers said.

“This reveals an opportunity to better support our communities to build a foundation of resilience, that can be a support in times of disaster and beyond.”

For those that experienced a disaster, the survey also shows this challenging experience can become a source of strength.

Participants with disaster experiences reported greater confidence that their household was prepared (68% vs 43%), felt more connected to their communities, shared information about local problems and initiatives more regularly (61% vs 49%), and had people in their community equipped to step up and lead recovery efforts if they need to (62% vs 49%).

“While disaster survivors are often depicted as victims with reduced capacities, this is not how they see themselves.

In fact, Australians who

“We’ve got the backs of businesses, as we have throughout this entire pandemic.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the support package would provide a statewide response to the Omicron wave of the pandemic, targeting those businesses that need it the most.

“Our regions have felt the impacts of Omicron, and it’s critical we give them a helping hand to recover and get local economies humming again,” Mr Toole said.

“This package shows that the NSW Government continues to have the back of residents and businesses in the bush with practical measures to ensure they

keep their workers safe and businesses open.”

Treasurer Matt Kean said we know some businesses in NSW have faced challenges and it is vital we get them the support they need to stay afloat and keep their workers in jobs.

“As we continue to protect the health and safety of our community, we have to ensure our economy is resilient and our businesses are supported so they bounce back from this most recent phase of the pandemic,” Mr Kean said.

“The Small Business Support Program helps those businesses with annual turnover of between $75,000 and $50 million with a decline in turnover of at least 40 per cent by providing a payment covering up to

20 per cent of their weekly payroll.

“By ensuring businesses keep their doors open and their employees paid, we are confident our economy will bounce back strongly as it did last year.”

Small Business Minister Eleni Petinos said the program was important to ensure small businesses have the resources and cash flow they need to survive this outbreak and bounce back.

“We know that the over 800,000 small businesses in NSW are the lifeblood of local communities and that many of these businesses experienced challenges due to the Omicron wave of the pandemic,” Ms Petinos said.

“This package will help relieve some of the costs of small business including

Covid Business Support Package Released BUSINESSES, workers and the performing arts across NSW are all set to benefit from a major financial support package of more than $1 billion to help those that have been hardest hit by the Omicron wave.

The package includes financial support for small businesses to buy rapid antigen tests (RATs) to help keep their workers safe and a new Small Business Support Program to assist businesses to help keep their workers employed.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said while case numbers are now declining, the NSW Government is determined to support those businesses that have been most affected during this wave of the pandemic.

“As part of the package,

we are introducing the Small Business Support Program to help support businesses that experienced the worst effects of the Omicron wave,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We are also providing support to business to help reimburse the cost of rapid antigen tests for their workers, extending the Commercial Landlord Hardship Grant and delivering additional funding for the performing arts sector.

“This targeted package provides support for businesses who experienced cashflow issues and the immediate economic impacts of the Omicron outbreak.

“NSW is tracking better than expected and confidence is returning.

“And as we did with earlier recoveries, we will come through this recent

“Our approach seeks to facilitate transformative change and demonstrate what can be achieved when communities are not just passive recipients of recovery funds, but are supported to actively find their own ways to rebuild and recover,” Associate Professor Rogers said. keeping workers safe, assist with cash flow and support small businesses to continue trading.”

The Small Business Support Program provides eligible businesses a lump sum payment of 20 percent of weekly payroll with a minimum payment of $500 per week and a maximum payment of $5,000 per week.

In addition, the existing Small Business Fees, Charges and RAT Rebate will be increased by 50 percent from the current $2,000 limit to $3,000 and employing businesses will be able to use the rebate to obtain RATs. This will support worker availability by helping reduce costs to small businesses and enabling healthy staff who have been exposed to COVID-19, but test negative, to return to work.

It all sounds valid, though, so maybe you will get away with pretending to have taken a sudden interest in being a literary critic.

The same could go for your husband.

If he has always shown an interest in drawing, then this could be legitimate.

If, however, the closest he has come to art appreciation is helping you hang the pictures in your home, then he may be attending for an entirely different reason.

Perhaps you could express your genuine curiosity in his new hobby and ask to see his sketches. You will then know what you are up against. I wouldn't be too concerned, though. Life models are very comfortable in their own skin and not in the least bit interested in retirees with fading eyesight.

You could always suggest that you will be his muse. At least it would give you an interesting topic of conversation at your next Book Club.

“At the moment, we have the lowest unemployment rate and interest rates in a generation, while rental vacancies have dropped to the lowest level in a dozen years, and they are still tightening even now.”

“While it’s inevitable that interest rates will have to rise, with a cash rate at the zero lower bound for some time yet, it’s no surprise to see the enduring popularity of residential property as an investment in these increasingly volatile market conditions,” Mr Wargent said.

AS mum and dad investors seek to shore up their investments in a volatile stock market, property is being seen as a safe haven for investors.

This is driving the market high in areas across Port Stephens and the Myall Coast.

“Record job vacancies suggest that the employment figures are only going to increase from here, especially as the international borders reopen.

In particular, Peleg highlights five benefits associated with long-term investments in low-risk residential properties: consistent capital growth over the long-term, delivering strong and stable returns; the ability to use leverage to magnify returns; tax benefits, such as depreciation and building allowances, negative gearing, and the capital gains tax discount for assets owned for longer than 12 months; the ability to add value to residential property assets through renovation or development; and there is no need to sell to realise some of the capital gains.

All community members are welcome to attend.

The RSL does amazing things in our communities supporting veterans and their families.

They also ensure that the history of sacrifice is not lost in communities.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest has a rich history when it comes to serving our country.

Many who served do not grow old as we do, having made the ultimate sacrifice.

Yet still today we see our young people sign up to serve.

Some serve in the Reserves, others serve in providing aid to places such as Tonga when a tsunami hits.

Our Armed forces are people that run towards danger when others run away.

After they have served they need our help and support.

MEALS On Wheels provides an essential service in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest region with many residents depending on the service for quality nutrition.

However as the service continues to grow and deliver more and more meals, the facility in which it is housed has been outgrown.

The Church hall is not suitable anymore as the population ages and more pressure is put on the service to help support local residents.

The organisation needs a new home and that will come at a cost.

Fundraising has commenced and the organisation is seeking grants and more funding to raise the estimated $500,000 needed to relocate to the industrial area.

Age No Barrier for Barry Ron Berczelly, he continued to do just that.

Before converting to a ‘spoonbill’ bowling arm, Barry had developed a vicious cross-body flick which affected his consistency.

The difference has been quite dramatic, and Ron Berczelly found that out today.

Barry never let Ron into the game leading all the way with some precision bowling.

To reach the semi-final, Ron had beaten two club titleholders, so he went into this match as a hot favourite.

Ron mounted a comeback, but the match was never in doubt with Barry winning 31-25.

I am not a Club historian, but I doubt that many Clubs could boast an 82-year-old making the final of their Clubs Singles Championship.

Congratulations Barry.

The final will be played next Sunday.

In other news.

Nominations are being called for the Club Major Pairs and I would reiterate that inexperienced players should nominate for this Championship as it will give them wonderful experience.

There will be a visit from the Northmead bowlers on Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 February.

The Club will need to field 7 teams of 3 to play for a trophy.

Players must be able to commit to play on both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

So far, 3 teams have been nominated so get your teams together for a great weekend of bowls.

There are no green fees for this event and Saturday night dinner and Sunday lunch can be had for $30.00.

26 JANUARY Whilst most Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club players were preoccupied with Australia Day functions, 16 bowlers played in 2 games of 4’s.

The winners on the day received a drink voucher along with a random card draw of the losers.

Those who played said it was an enjoyable game.

29 January The quarter-final round of the Club Championship Singles was played today with some surprising results.

A very hot northerly wind was certainly a factor in some outcomes.

The current Club Champion, Jeff Baker had a comfortable win against Dave Perry, 31-16.

Club Pairs title holder, Peter Gurney, had too much

experience to beat Tony Butler, 31-18.

Barry Goode continues to amaze with a very good win over Geoffrey Muggleton 31-20.

In another upset Ron Berczelly toppled former Club Singles Champion, Denis Ashbridge, 31-25.

30 January The Club Singles Championship continued today with the semi-final round with thankfully, better playing conditions and on an immaculately prepared, Peter Thornton green.

The Peter Gurney, Jeff Baker clash was a most enjoyable game to watch with Peter always in the game, but Jeff’s conversion rate was first class, and he ran out the winner 31-27 to progress to yet another Championship final.
