RFS encouraging residents to have an emergency survival kit prepared this season as summer begins

By Samuel BARTLETT RURAL Fire Servicemen have commended Pindimar local Ian Trahan for protecting his house, so others don’t have to.

The retired shipwright has hooked up an ingenious sprinkler system to a small dam on his property to soak the house when bushfires approach and embers attack.

With a little help from neighbours, Ian linked up his house and shed, but the preventative system hasn’t caught on elsewhere.

“As far as I know, we’re the only ones doing it,” Mr Trahan said.

“By plugging up the downpipes, the water from the sprinklers overflows around the guttering, completely drenching the house.”

As the bushfire season hits full swing, Mr Trahan says locals are worried last season’s bushfires may edge closer to their corner of the bush.

“Fifteen years ago the fires were only ten metres from the house,” he said, but thankfully they hadn’t edged as close in

recent seasons.

However, this time last year, the Pindimar and Bundabah RFS were part of the crews battling more than 119 blazes across the state.

Six people perished in the flames, but with recent rain, Ian says the risk of complacency is very real.

“You never know how bad the fires will be,” he said.

Ian has cleared as much bush on his property as possible but says nearby fire

corridors need maintenance.

“They’re a mess and I don’t know why the Council hasn’t cleaned them up,” Ian said.

He says although his personal home irrigation protects the house and the shed, without the clear corridors, fire crews won’t be able to battle through the dense scrub and help the rest of the community.

The RFS is encouraging residents to have an emergency survival kit prepared this season as summer begins.

With support from Woolworths and Real Pet Food, Aussie Helpers’ Christmas hampers are filled with everyday pantry essentials and a few festive treats to ensure isolated farming families can celebrate the festive season.

It is not unusual for the assets in an estate to include shares in companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. If those shares were purchased by the deceased after 23 September 1985 (being the date Capital Gains Tax (“CGT”) was introduced in Australia) and if they are sold, then CGT will be payable in respect of the profit generated by the sale. Bulahdelah Fire Brigade Handover in Time for Sweltering Heat

By Samuel BARTLETT BULAHDELAH is set for the upcoming fire season with a brand new crew signed on to assist.

MidCoast Mayor David West handed over the RFS facilities to Hunter District Manager Paul Best on Thursday in preparation for the upcoming heatwave.

Mr Best said, “Only yesterday I had the pleasure of emailing each and every one of the crew behind me and offering them an extension for another (twelve months), a total of two years, finishing in June 2022, so more good news there for the local community.”

With the weather too hot for more burn-offs in the coming weeks, the Mitigation Crew will join the current Bulahdelah brigade to protect people and property across the Myall Coast.

When announcing the collaboration, Mayor West thanked the crew for their commitment.

“I wish to really thank you on behalf of the 93,000 residents of Midcoast council for the service that you’ve

given to this community,” he said.

Without the work they carry out, “Residents could never exist in what

is turning out to be a very dangerous environment as a result of changes in weather conditions,” he said.

When looking forward

THE announcement of an extension to HomeBuilder by the Federal Government will support the delivery of new home and renovation projects across the Hunter and the Myall Coast, says the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

“The extension to the HomeBuilder package is a welcomed announcement that will support thousands of residential building industry workers, along with those in the manufacturing and retail sectors,” said HIA Hunter Executive Director, Craig Jennion.

“Today’s announcement reflects the importance of the home building industry and the role the industry plays in generating jobs and economic activity.”

“Adjustments to the scheme, especially those regarding price caps will attract additional home buyers in the Hunter to the scheme. Combined with the critical additional time to commence for both new and current applicants, giving builders six months from signing a contract to start work, HIA expects the take up of the grant will remain strong.”

The very latest building approvals data shows the start of the impact of stage 1 of HomeBuilder.

September recorded the second strongest month of detached home approvals in the HIA Hunter region since the GFC. Annualised detached home approvals are up 3 per cent for the year to September compared to the year earlier and 12 percent for the 3 months to September.

“The extension of HomeBuilder, combined with low interest rates and first home buyer incentives, will ensure that this demand is carried forward to 2021 and activity will continue throughout the year.”

“This will ensure the residential building industry is on a strong footing and this contributes to the longterm prospects for the entire region,” concluded Mr Jennion.

Australians Hit The Road In Caravans For 2020 Summer Holidays

By Marian SAMPSON AS we holiday this year, many of us are dusting off a caravan and planning to hit the highway.

Whether you are a fan of the van or consider them to be mobile road blocks – it’s a given this holiday season there will be more caravans on the roads across the country than usual.

Many will wind their way to the Bay, across to Hawks Nest and onward up the legendary Pacific Coast Road towards Queensland over the holidays.

November sees the launch of Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s ‘Caravan / RV Road Safety’ initiative.

In the coming months, approximately 14 million nights and 3.3 million camping trips or more are expected to be taken.

Many of these will be spent in Port

Stephens, on the Myall Coast and even in and around Coffs Harbour.

“Safety is always important but with an expected surge in travel this summer with over 741,000 registered RVs (Recreational Vehicles) in Australia and additional interest from ‘first timers’ due to Covid preventing international holidaying, now is a crucial time to put this messaging ‘front of mind’,” said Keelan Howard, GM of Marketing and Communications, Caravan Industry Association of Australia.

Of course it goes almost without saying that we need to make sure we are travelling safely, that we take breaks every two hours and that we carry water in case there are delays on the roads.

However for caravanners there are extra considerations, like planning which rest stops are suitable for the rig, the appropriate use of rest stops including truck rest areas, vehicle preparation, sharing the road with trucks, UHF communication and towing will be promoted and shared.

When towing a caravan it is important to consider the “keep left unless overtaking”

Housing stress to rise The Hunter’s private rental market has been largely unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic with rents across the region showing solid gains in the year to September.

THE Hunter’s private rental market has been largely unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic with rents across the region showing solid gains in the year to September.

Compass Housing economist, Martin Kennedy, said the local market has been remarkably resilient compared to Sydney where rents in some areas have fallen by as much as 20%.

Mr Kennedy said that data from the NSW Government Rent and Sales Report September 2020 quarter shows that, overall, rents in Newcastle are up by 3.7% compared to the same time last year. Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens have performed even better with rents up roughly 5%, while in Cessnock median rents have jumped by 7.3%

“This is obviously good news for landlords, but bad news for renters, particularly those on lower incomes, who may have lost their jobs due to COVID-19,” Mr Kennedy said.

Across the Hunter region roughly 16,000 more people are out of work compared to the start of the year.

The unemployment rate in Newcastle increased to 9% in September after falling to 7% the previous month but remains below the June peak of 11.1%.

Mr Kennedy said the combination of higher unemployment and rising rents was concerning.

By Samantha COOKE FOR the second year in a row, Stroud businesses are joining forces to create an outdoor twilight shopping experience.

With many events being cancelled throughout the year, business owners on Cowper Street are ensuring Christmas festivities are full steam ahead, preparing special offers for shoppers on December 11, from 5pm - 8pm.

In aims to bring tourism back to the small town, the market encourages the theme of ‘locals supporting locals’ according to owner of Stroud Hardware Lea Gartrell.

“We’ve found a lot of people from out of town have been really supporting us lately, just wanting that local product.”

Success from the previous event, created

by Stroud Hardware along with next door store Crafty Friends, has encouraged the whole street to participate this year with a range of locally sourced artwork and products available for purchase.

“We’ve all got unique stuff, most of it is made in the local area and very close surrounding areas,” she said.

“So, you’re not only supporting the local store here but you’re supporting a lot of local artists.”

After major events like the Stroud Rodeo and Stroud Country Fair were cancelled due to difficulties with complying with COVID restrictions, Secretary of Crafty Friends Karen Hutchinson said locals are welcoming a night of enjoyment.

“We’ve got sewers, we’ve got one amazing lady that restores furniture with chalk paint, and we have some talented cooks that make beautiful preserves,” she said.

“Stroud Butchery does amazing stuff.

MIDCOAST Council is currently seeking feedback on its draft Councillors Expenses and Facilities Policy.

The policy sets out the maximum amounts Council will pay for specific expenses and facilities, to support all Councillors in undertaking their civic duties.

“This is all about enabling the reasonable and appropriate reimbursement of expenses and provision of facilities,” explained MidCoast Council General Manager, Adrian Panuccio.

Heatherbrae traffic shemozzle DEAR News Of The Area, IT’S about time somebody in the Council put some positive action into rectifying the shemozzle of traffic management around the area from the big roundabout at Heatherbrae to the intersection at McDonald's and Bunnings.

It doesn't take too much imagination to see that all of the vehicles turning left off the Highway into that large industrial area only have one way to get out again.

Also, why hasn't Bunnings and McDonald's been made to have a designated Exit Turn Left Only directly from the Bunnings Carpark?

“The new IT system is a further step in aligning development assessment processes which will ultimately lead to a reduction in assessment times,” said Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

Updates to Council’s online DA tracker will not occur during the transition period and some processing delays may be experienced as staff undertake manual receipting at customer service centres during this time.

Council’s online payment services will also be interrupted between 7-11 December, however payment can be made via BPAY or in person.

“Members of the community will still be able to come in and do business with us at any of our customer service centres, and development applications can continue to be lodged during this period,” Mr De Szell explained.

Dear Wendy, My goodness, how far we have regressed from our proud convict roots when men like good old Henry Pye were sent from Essex to Van Diemen's Land in 1831 for stealing pigs. Aged 38, Henry was a stoutly-built ploughman, married with nine children.

I'd suggest that with that many offspring he probably took the gamble thinking any punishment was better than another couple of decades with that many whining mouths to feed. Hard labour, sunburn and regular floggings were no doubt an attractive alternative.

And now we have your daughter who could only manage a packet of false eyelashes. Hardly the stuff of legend, Wendy. I can see her now, batting her lashes at the local law enforcement officer who didn't have the heart to give her anything more than a reprimand, suffering, as he was, from disillusionment after he joined the boys in blue in order to scope out mob wives and uncover drug syndicates. Instead, he got the local shopping centre beat with his biggest undercover find to date being a pensioner's keys misplaced in the fruit and veg section at Coles.

I wouldn't be too concerned about this blip on your daughter's moral compass.

The fact she confessed is a good sign.

I'd suggest her punishment should be extended. She could perhaps buy some Christmas gifts for children her age who have far greater needs than synthetic lash extensions. Get rid of the Grand Theft Auto game too. Or maybe give it to the policeman so he can fantasise about the day when he gets promoted to undercover agent, rising through the ranks of organised crime and dressing in understated mobster black.

Ready, set, read this summer FOR MidCoast kids it’s ‘Game On’ from Tuesday 1 December, when the Summer Reading Club Challenge gets underway.

The Summer Reading Club Challenge theme this year is Tales of Wonder and young people and families are encouraged to explore the wonders of stories, from myths and legends to fairytales and real life heroes, by joining the challenge.

"The Summer Reading Club is a great way for kids to maintain their reading levels over the long summer holidays,” explained Chris Jones, MidCoast Council’s Libraries Manager.

The program is aimed at children aged 0-16 years and helping them to maintain reading throughout the summer holidays, with the chance to win some great prizes along the way.

This year the SRC Challenge will be run through ‘Beanstack’, a free online service that offers an innovative new way to connect readers of all ages with books, engaging reading activities and challenges.

It includes book and activity logging, badges and registration for all members of the family under one account, or parents can create accounts just for their children.

This year participants will receive some great prizes as part of the program, all thanks to the program partners State Library of Queensland, Mission Australia, MidCoast 4 Kids and Council's Waste Education Team.

“The benefits of reading are endless and it’s hoped that this challenge will encourage some non-readers to pick up a book at home, and others to

keep it up over their break,” added Chris.

Ingrid Luck and Judy McGavock were leading by 6 on the 13th end (15 v 9), bowling against Sheila Rattray and Irene Roberts over the next 3 ends Sheila and Irene gained 8 shots, now

just 1 shot difference in the score.

With just 2 ends left to bowl it was still anyone's game, the victors were Judy and Ingrid 18 v 15.

Thursday 26th November: Social bowls and the Final of the Minor Pairs. Format for social bowls 12 ends, 2 games of Triples and a game of Pairs.

Wilma Drake, Jean Glover and Pat Baker had a good win against Sue Morris, Bev Rhodes and Sandra Leisemann 19 v7.

Johnson and Kayelene Pearson 12 v 6.

Bev Dunn, Robyn Webster and Karen McPhie won the first end in their contest against Lyn Nightingale, Bev Stephens and Robyn Beaumont but that was to be all they would win, losing 16 v 1.

The Final Of the Minor Pairs Lynda Richards and Bette Saillard against Ingrid Luck and Judy McGavock.

This proved to be a very close contest in the early stages, on the 4th end 3 all,

By the 9th end Ingrid and Judy held a 1 shot lead 8 v 7, but the "tides were about to turn". Lynda and Bette winning the next 4

Ladies enjoying VIEWS Club's first lunch back together with only 30 members.

MYALL River VIEW Club were able to meet for lunch at Tea Gardens Hotel on Friday 13th November for the first time since March owing to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Paula Carter a member of VIEW spoke on the 1955 big floods at Maitland.

Paula worked for the Maitland Post Office aged 20 at the time and was given half an hour to collect her belongings from her place of residence which was about to go under water and she just made it back to the office and it was flooded in for the next 16 days.

Maitland was mostly under water and it was the worst flood in European history.

Rhonda Jurd our President was a 6 year old at the time and her grandmother lost everything. Her father took film of the floods and we saw a photo with some chooks that belonged to her grandmother and they are still alive 65 years later.

We meet again on Friday 11th December for our Christmas lunch at Tea Gardens Hotel, 11am for 11.30am start.

Social bowls played 2 games of 3 bowls Triples 16 ends, Sheril Johnson, Jean Glover and Maynie Roberts were leading until the 10th end from then on the game belonged to Judi Polak, Jill McBride and Dale Winter, winning by 8 shots 20 v 12.

On the 8th end Dawn Jones, Lorraine Murphy and Karen McPhie had a 4 shot lead against Leona Clissold, Robyn Webster and Sandra Leisemann 8 v 4.

Unfortunately Karen's team remained scoreless for the next 7 ends while Sandra's ladies gained 15 points ultimately winning 19 v 9.
