the state of Council’s finances, Director of Corporate Services Steve Embry pointed out that, although there is a “financial sustainability challenge, we have $5 billion of assets to consider, and a very large road network is part of that”.

The integral, and critical, value of grantfunding was clearly acknowledged.

“Grants were around 40 percent of revenue last year."

Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Robert Scott, highlighted the drain of catching up on decades of maintenance shortfalls.

“The maintenance budget is being stretched over an ever-widening array of

maintenance problems, Council is barely playing catch-up on deterioration,” Mr Scott said.

“Repainting of the railings on the Singing Bridge is not a current proposal, however, Council is looking at a pedestrian refuge on the Tea Gardens end, to facilitate a one-way footpath situation for mobility scooters.”

Paul DeSzell, Director of Liveable Communities, covered many topics, clarifying Council’s position on recent highly-contentious topics including the Myall River dredge and the offshore wind turbines concept.

“The Corrie Channel is the official navigation channel according to the State Government, it will be dredged to maintain

access, but the Eastern (Natural) Channel has only ever been dredged to resupply the Winda Woppa stockpile,” Mr DeSzell explained.

“Council is greatly supportive of renewable energy, but currently has no formal position on wind farms, and will consider all facts before establishing a position."

Some locals contended the historical accuracy of certain statements, but Council’s focus appears fixed on the present and relatively recent past.

Many more issues were raised, including the Tea Gardens Pool, parking along Winda Woppa, domestic animals on beaches, and the iconic pelicans perched atop the Singing Bridge’s lights.

Hunter Workers respond to “lies and inaccuracies” IN response to what they describe as an “alarming surge of misinformation”, Hunter Workers has released an information flyer “outlining the facts” about the development of offshore wind projects in the Hunter.

Formerly known as the Newcastle Trades Hall Council, Hunter Workers is the overall representative body that acts on behalf of all affiliated unions in the Hunter region.

Hunter Workers say the flyer has been prompted by “lies and inaccuracies circulating online and in the community”, with the organisation also taking aim at Coalition and One Nation politicians who “continue to campaign aggressively against Hunter offshore wind”.

The Hunter region is set for major

economic and industrial change in coming years as the nation transitions away from a reliance on coal and other fossil fuels, and Hunter Workers Secretary Leigh Shears believes offshore wind is an opportunity not to be missed.

“Offshore wind is an incredible opportunity for the creation of quality jobs and energy security while enormously reducing our impact on the environment.

“We are committed to ensuring workers and communities win the best possible outcomes and maximum benefits from emerging industry.”

Shears said that “political opportunism” has contributed to growing community-panic over offshore wind.

“We are appalled, but not surprised,

by Dutton and Barnaby's obvious political campaign to create confusion and division amongst our working-class communities.

“Hunter Workers will continue to work closely and productively with working communities, community groups and the business sector to facilitate informed, factbased conversation and decision making.”

In the flyer, Hunter Workers claim that offshore wind has less environmental impact than almost any other energy source while producing more energy at peak times than onshore wind farms.

The flyer also states that offshore wind produces electricity far cheaper than other types of power, and that wind power provides far better economic opportunity and jobs for local communities than other proposed energy industries.

On Saturday, 18 November, Myall River Action Group (MRAG) members met with Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington to discuss the NSW Government’s plan to mitigate severe shoaling feared to be choking the

Myall River.

“MRAG have been longstanding and effective advocates for the health of the Myall River, it was really good to meet members recently to discuss the current status of the sand shoaling,” MP Washington told NOTA. “My discussion with MRAG follows on from another meeting with the Hawks Nest

Liveable Communities at the Community Conversations event on Tuesday, 21 November, the officially designated channel is the Corrie Island passage, while the ‘Shortcut’ (also known as ‘the Natural Channel’) is only dredged to resupply the Winda Woppa stockpile.

“We want the Natural Channel to be redesignated as the official channel, resuming its natural place as the primary entrance to the Myall, while the Corrie

Channel naturally reverts to a creek,” MRAG’s Gordon Grainger detailed.

“Between Corrie Island and the Singing Bridge, the ferries are reporting sand strikes in at least three spots, estimating they can’t service the area by early 2024.

“From the Bridge to the Lakes, sand inundation presents severe dangers, potentially halting the important boating visitor trade.”

Ms Washington told

NOTA she was meeting with the NSW Minister for Transport this week to seek “solutions to our local challenges”, armed with information “gained from my meetings with MRAG, HNTGPA and the recent hydrographic study”.

“As residents are well aware, the issues are complex and solutions are costly, but I appreciate the importance of action, so I’ll keep the community advised of progress.”

Blended families are becoming increasingly common in Australia, making up approximately 3.5% of Australian families in 2021.

When making a Will, we oftentimes see clients whose natural reaction is to leave everything to their spouse, and if their spouse does not survive them, to their children equally.

In NSW, stepchildren are not automatically considered as “eligible persons” to contest a Will, unlike the biological children or the spouse of the deceased. However, a stepchild may be eligible to make a claim against an estate if they can prove the following: (a) that they were partially or wholly dependent on the deceased person; and (b) that they are or were

The Court may also consider other factors when determining whether a stepchild has grounds to contest a will such as the closeness of the relationship between the deceased and the stepchild and the extent to which the stepchild was supported by the deceased financially or in respect of their overall welfare (and vice versa).

RADIO solutions to emergency situations were discussed in-depth at the Myall Way Emergency Planning Group’s (MWEPG) new Radio Team meeting on Friday, 24 November.

Held at official blackspot Bundabah, a burgeoning pilot area for such projects, the Radio Team explored the concept of a ‘local UHF network’ to confront the disturbing reality that power and internet will be first to disappear in a disaster.

The average citizen, however, rarely considers how, without wi-fi or a mobile, they would contact anyone beyond shouting distance.

“For $125, a household can have a batteryoperated, handheld UHF radio, with range already proven to cover Bundabah, and soon to be tested all the way to the Pindimar Totem Pole,” Greg Mutton, local author and Radio Team member, told NOTA.

"Ideally, every household in Bundabah/ Pindimar would be equipped with a UHF unit, tuned to a 'local emergency' channel, able to receive instructions from emergency services, and allow a connection to the community if you are safe or in need of help, while access and communications in the area are re-established,” Joanne Pearce, head of the MWEPG, told NOTA. “The 'local net' could span Bundabah and rural properties to the Totem Pole radio, whence radio calls could relay over the ridgeline to Pindimar and Tea Gardens, with a volunteer overseeing the connection in emergency times."

"We agreed that the Totem Pole, or the highest elevation nearby, would be an ideal location for a fixed community UHF radio – just across from the turnoff everyone uses for mobile reception." "’CREST’, the Citizen Radio Emergency Service Team, offers training for community situations, and the MWEPG will seek grants assisting a local system set up, like the recent Lions Taree offer to help fund community repeaters in the MidCoast region.”

The EPG Radio Team believes that generators and solar panels could easily power a standalone community emergency repeater, and the UHF solution is, so far, the only practical one while Pindimar/Bundabah remains a blackspot.

Gillespie: Get on with infrastructure projects

By Thomas O’KEEFE A RECENT public call from Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, has urged the State and Local Governments to “get on and build projects” that have already had funds allocated.

cited several meetings with Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King, during which he requested that the Labor Federal Government maintain infrastructure funding put in place by the previous Coalition Government.

“The Albanese

Government’s review of Infrastructure project funding has been unwelcome, delaying several key projects across the country even further,” Dr Gillespie said.

“I am disappointed that some projects announced across our region as far back as 2019 are still not underway.”

‘Blue Christmas’ on offer in Karuah

NOT everyone can share in the merriment of Christmas and New Year’s, but it is comforting to know that there is a place for everyone, with a ‘Blue Christmas Service’ offered at Karuah Uniting Church Hall on Thursday, 7 December, from 10am.

"Christmas is not always a happy time for many people, it’s hard being swept up in the hype of Christmas when you are grieving or reliving unhappy Christmas memories,” Helenna Anderson, the Service convenor, told NOTA. Not strictly a religious service, Blue Christmas is a time for people who maybe do not feel the Christmas spirit, or are grieving, to come

together to share.

"This is a time to acknowledge the pain and hurt that someone might feel at Christmas, and to share with others the different feelings that this time of the year can elicit," Ms Anderson explained.

"People can acknowledge that it’s okay to feel the way they feel at Christmas, and we'd like to have a service that is focused on them,” said Ms Anderson, experienced in similar services around the Hunter region, though this is a first for the Myall Coast area.

“We sensed there is a need for people to acknowledge their grief and loss at this time, and this is an opportunity for quiet reflection, allowing people the chance for a ritual

to get some of their hurt and pain out into the open and acknowledge their pain, grief, or loss.

“It can also be a helpful preparation for the rest of what Christmas throws at us, the parties, etc.”

There will be a morning tea afterwards, with all welcome to stay and share.

Helenna and Lee Clayton run the 'Living Through Grief' group, meeting every second Friday at Karuah RSL, the next being 8 December.

"The people who come have found real benefit from being in a safe, comfortable space where they can share their issues around grieving.

“Often, talking to family and neighbours is not always the most comfortable way forward.”

Local Governments, and yet, years on, some or none of the funding allocated has been spent.”

Dr Gillespie spotlighted multiple projects, including $20 million to improve The Bucketts Way, and the $48 million Pacific Highway – Harrington Rd Intersection Upgrade at Coopernook.

Other projects included works on Clarence Town Road (Raymond Terrace to Dungog), Lorne Road (Kew to Comboyne), the Pacific Highway Upgrade from Raymond Terrace to Karuah, and the M1 Extension to Raymond Terrace.

The Bucketts Way and Clarence Town Road are, Dr Gillespie conceded, “well underway".

“Funding still remains in place for the Italia Road Interchange project, and with nearly three years having passed since funding was announced for the Harrington Road overpass at Coopernook, funding continues to remain in place despite the State Government progressing this project at a snail’s pace."

Dr Gillespie took direct aim at the NSW State Labor Government, as well as Federal, declaring that it “clearly has to speed up its planning and design processes”.

“They take far too long, many of these projects should have been completed by now,” he added.

A MidCoast spokesperson told News Of The Area, "MidCoast Council is well

underway in the Bucketts Way program as explained by Dr Gillespie.

"The other project is currently with the State Government.

"When funding is announced for certain projects, work cannot be undertaken until the funding deed is delivered by the funding body.

"These deeds impose tight restrictions on how and where the money can be spent and require periodic reporting and auditing to ensure we are delivering against the requirements of the funding."

Myall U3A members explore unique history of Maitland Gaol ON a recent Friday morning, 20 members of the Myall University of the Third Age (Myall U3A) travelled to East Maitland to explore the historic Maitland Gaol.

Annie Rutter, Publicity Officer, Myall U3A, said “meandering through the harsh, stone-cold prison was a fascinating, albeit confronting experience”.

“We learnt that the first prisoners were admitted in 1848 and the last left in 1998.

“Showers weren’t introduced until 1975 - can you imagine?” Annie said.

Tour guide Marilyn entertained the group with facts and tales of murders, hangings, escapees and suicide attempts, not to mention the dozens of babies born to female prisoners throughout the gaol’s treacherous history.

“We also discovered that some notoriously famous baddies, George Savvas

and Ivan Milat, had been its residents ‘back in the day’,” Annie said.

“Early conditions in the gaol were horrendous.

“Listening to Marilyn’s descriptions was enough to make the hairs stand up on the back of our necks.

“I think that we were all rather glad when the gates of the gaol were shut and bolted behind us.”

EDF Renewables Australia has applied for a feasibility licence to explore the viability of their Newcastle Offshore Wind (NOW) project within the declared Hunter offshore wind zone.

The application period for feasibility licences, to be issued by the Federal Government, closed on November 14.

EDF Renewables Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, the second largest generator of electricity in the world and the fifth largest generator of renewable energy.

With renewable energy projects in operation and development around the globe, EDF has turned its eyes to the Hunter, exploring the option of building an offshore wind farm in the recently declared zone.

The NOW project was originally acquired by EDF Renewables from a consortium of Newcastlebased renewable energy developers, a fact which EDF say provides the company with a “strong understanding of community requirements and expectations”.

In October, EDF entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Newcastle to collaborate on “research, education and innovation” if its application for a feasibility licence is successful.

EDF forecast the project, if it goes ahead, will create over 4,000 highly skilled jobs during construction and over 250 jobs during operation.

development, EDF’s feasibility licence application outlined a plan to conduct extensive environmental studies over multiple years to ascertain the potential impact of the project on marine life, as well as effects on current maritime and marine users.

EDF Renewables Australia CEO Dave Johnson said he was aware of local concerns.

“The granting of a feasibility licence for the NOW project will allow EDF Renewables Australia to further work with the community to truly understand the impacts prior to beginning the project’s assessment and approval process.

“These concerns can then be designed and addressed throughout the development process.”

Mr Johnson also indicated that EDF were committed to ongoing community consultation.

“We want to hear what all of the community really thinks,” said Mr Johnson.

“Our commitment to regular and transparent community consultation is critical to the engagement for any project, and even more so for a regionally significant transformation project such as NOW. “During the development of other projects across our portfolio, EDF Renewables Australia has amended its project scope to accommodate community concerns prior to commencing development approval processes.

“It’s important we receive a range of feedback from different stakeholders, so the project can proceed with these concerns addressed.”

Hawks Nest Plaza springs into life with Open Mic Nite

DREAMS came closer to reality as the Hawks Nest Plaza, on Booner Street, saw its first ‘Open Mic Nite’ on Saturday, 25 November from 3pm.

As reported in NOTA back in April this year, the Hawks Nest Plaza has long-forgotten plans that could have made the space a busy centre of activity.

Facilitated by Café Providence, the ‘Open Mic Nite’, was a refreshing look at the Plaza being used as it was intended to be: a pleasant, family- and pet-friendly space in the middle of the Hawks Nest commercial zone.

Several live acts mustered

the nerve to perform in public, including talented locals Leon Bobako and Chipper, both singing and playing acoustic guitar.

A special performance was the teenage trio of Lindy, Leilani and Samia, tentatively named ‘the Quackheads’, who

hailed from across the Bay and Newcastle.

The girls come from a larger group of ten budding musicians, all in the same music class at high school, with whom they have performed at Newcastle Civic Theatre’s ‘Diosounds’

This month’s photo topic was ‘Tree Knots’ and the selected photo was taken by photographer Sue Donohue during a recent visit to Dorrigo National Park.

“During a three day stay in Dorrigo, I discovered the many wonderful waterfalls, trees and wildlife that the National Park had to offer.

“A truly beautiful and magical place.

“Thinking ahead to the November topic (Tree Knots), I was able to photograph many tree knots and burls but this gigantic tree burl was just amazing,” Sue said.

A burl is defined as a rounded outgrowth on a tree that is usually woody and deformed.

“This burl for all the world looks like a man’s face,” Sue said.

The trio made their public debut in a non-school related gig, covering several songs from their inspirations, including Jeff Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah’, and a particularly touching delivery of The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’.

With clear talent and a confidence-boost, these three young ladies will be going places.

Lead guitarist Leilani said, “It was fun and we like people to listen,” while Lindy mentioned, “When you go on, you’re fine, but the nerves

come once I start singing,” although her voice did justice to Paul McCartney.

Acoustic guitarist Samia said, "Just try not to care that you're being watched."

It was a mellow afternoon, and many canine companions could also enjoy (and join) the show, with diamantestudded ‘Nims the Needy’, making plenty of new friends.

Christmas fundraiser for women

WOMEN’S service organisation, the Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle (ZCHN), held a delicious early Christmas luncheon in Tea Gardens on Sunday, 26 November, amidst a warm spring afternoon.

Part of Zonta International, the Club’s focus is ‘Building a Better World for Women and Girls’, and runs fundraisers and awareness-raising events throughout the year.

“We run scholarship programs, make breast cushions for cancer survivors and birthing kits for women in disadvantaged countries, run movie nights, high teas, Bunnings BBQs

and cake stalls, and sell special bags,” explained Jill Maclachlan, Vice President of ZCHN. Recently, a spectacular ‘yarn-bombing’ on 22 November saw the ladies’ hand-knitted woollen goods wrapped around the trees in the Rotunda area of Warners Bay. “The importance of generating greater awareness of the devastating impact of Domestic Violence cannot be overestimated,” ZCHN President Kate Magee said.

Stinker’s Fishin’: Fishin’ Know when not to go Stinker’s

IT IS said that ‘good fishers know when not to go fishing’.

Well, I don’t know where that leaves me because last Monday I went fishing and I should have stayed home.

For me to catch cracker snapper, in front of the Outer Light off Fingal Island, I need a couple of variables to fall into place.

I need a southerly wind and a rising sea.

A flat sea in a northeasterly, I can’t get a bite.

With the southerly blowing, I can anchor and let the wind blow me over my snapper hot spot.

With the current and the wind going in the same direction I can toss an unweighted bait, of cubed yellowtail, just short of the breaking bombora and hang on!

Slowly, slowly the bait sinks until, whammo!

The rod buckles and the reel screams under the weight of a runaway snapper.

Lately I have been catching thumpers up to eight kilograms.

Now, about last Monday.

The southerly kept blowing and blowing and the sea kept rising and rising.

Around 3 o’clock I made the decision to launch Stinkpot in the corner of Fingal Beach and head for the lighthouse. Conditions weren’t too bad until I left Fingal Bay and motored into the open ocean.

It was then that I should have turned around and went home.

I kept going and dropped anchor 30 metres from the wash.

The sea was cranky and sitting in Stinkpot was like riding a wild horse.

First cast I hooked something that took off like the last bus to Bobs Farm.

A bigger than average

salmon leapt out of the water.

I was surrounded by a school of salmon and couldn’t get my bait to the bottom where I was most likely to catch a snapper.

Finally, a snapper to three kilograms beat the salmon to the bait.

Snapper are fantastic fighting fish that take real effort to land.

Another snapper soon after, as conditions worsened.

With the waves increasing and the wind howling I finally made the right decision and headed home – exhausted.

THE ladies of the Wednesday Craft Group are setting up their major Christmas Sale table at Hawks Nest Community Hall on Wednesday, 6 December, to continue their spirited and heartfelt fundraising for community needs.

Members of the public will be invited to the Community

As decades progressed, more sophisticated aircraft came with NSW Health Doctors and Ambulance Paramedics, and more bases along the coast, covering from the Hawkesbury to the Queensland border.

“Each helicopter is staffed by four crew: a pilot, a support person, a doctor and a paramedic who are on a twelve hour roster with a six minute turnaround whenever a mission is required,” according to Mr Rowe.

“Each helicopter costs approximately $18 million and carries about $2.5 million worth of medical equipment which allows the medical staff to stabilise and even operate on patients at an accident site or during the flight.

“Each mission is only made possible because of the generosity from the community, as unlike ambulance transfer, transport by the Westpac Rescue helicopter is free.”

Westpac has been sponsoring the service for 48 years, however one third of its running costs is funded by community sponsorship, the rest

by corporate and NSW Government funding.

President Hilary Gall thanked the volunteers for the day, Robyn, Annette, Helen and Rusty as well as Graeme for an enjoyable and interesting visit.

“Members left with a greater insight into what was involved each time the rescue helicopter was heard flying overhead,” Hilary said, and she particularly thanked Rusty Seargent from Bulahdelah, who helped facilitate the visit and has over twenty years volunteering for the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service.

Lions Charity Fashion Show for DIPG

CHARITY never looked so good as the Lions ‘Spring Into Summer 4’ Fashion Show, held at Tea Gardens Public School on Sunday, 26 November.

The humid day got steamier as the local supermodels strutted the stuff of local fashion designers and retailers, all to help fight one of the least-understood children’s cancers.

“Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a brain tumour that forms in the brain’s control centre atop the spinal cord, it is the deadliest form of childhood cancer, and has no treatment options except palliative radiotherapy,” Jo Bennett, General Manager of charity RunDIPG, told NOTA. "Funds raised here from the tickets and raffles help equip hospitals and pay specialist Paediatric Nurse positions at John

Hunter Hospital, helping alleviate undue stress for families.”

The audience enjoyed professional DJ music from local celebrity and superstar Jomeca, alongside professional compering from industry veteran Maggie Nadal.

Through nine ‘scenes’, fashions were flaunted, representing comfortable casual-wear, floral and upbeat ‘brights’, stylish ‘coordinates’, and lively ‘party!’, with clothes designed locally and abroad, including kaftans, tops, pants and shoes, and handmade accessories like necklaces and bags.

The team of local ladies modelling the ensembles had undergone weeks of meticulous rehearsal to exhibit the finest threads in town, with mere minutes between scenes for wardrobe changes (thankfully no 'wardrobe malfunctions'), and many models' personalities shone as they embraced the fashion and

Show co-ordinator and ceaseless engine Carole Richards said, "We need the local shops, days like this can hopefully give you the inspiration to visit our local shops and buy what they've got.

“We also have a personal connection with this terrible disease, DIPG, and are so happy to help raise funds and awareness with you all here today.”

WE need insects. There's no doubt about it.

They play a huge role, not least as pollinators and decomposers.

I've always found it amusing that

people are petrified of bugs but not petrified of the health risks when spraying enough contaminants to rival Fukushima.

There are some natural alternatives to fly/mosquito spray - citronella is a popular choice.

If it's a spider that's causing the issue, you can simply get it to crawl onto a piece of paper or enclose it in a jar and then take it outside where it will do a great job of keeping other bugs at bay.

Cockroaches are natural composters, but I'll admit I don't like seeing them scuttling across the floorboards.

Check for any places they might be sneaking in (in our house that would be the front door, since apparently our children were born in a tent), keep your kitchen clean and free of food scraps, and don't have composting systems too close to your house otherwise you'll make them think they are welcome guests.

Cognitive dissonance at play over offshore wind farms DEAR News Of The Area, I HAVE been reading the News Of The Area articles on the proposed wind farm in the Post Stephens area with great interest.

Some of the coverage has been pro but most has been anti.

The recent protest in Hawks Nest was supported by several community groups: HNTGPA (Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Progress Association), PBCA (Pindimar Bundabah Community Association), MKEG (Myall Koala and Environment Group), Save the Myall Save Port Stephens and the local Indigenous community.

There is no evidence to support the idea

that wind farms have a negative effect on tourism, particularly if they are built at least 20 km from the coast.

Similarly there is no evidence of wind farms killing or causing whales to beach themselves, according to Greenpeace.

Environmental concerns are now focused on the pristine nature of the environment and the fact that it is a unique habitat for birds such as Gould’s Petrels.

I don’t think that this is a case of nimbyism (Not In My Back Yard).

I believe that it is more a case of cognitive dissonance i.e. the mental discomfort that people feel when they hold two opposing values.

As has been reported in NOTA, many members of these groups (a) oppose the proposed wind farm development and (b) agree that wind farms are a vital component

in adjusting to climate change.

These opposing views lead to a state of cognitive dissonance.

When confused by conflicting values, people have a tendency to behave in ways that deny their own beliefs.

It is a common phenomenon around the world – many people believe in the climate science and yet cannot reduce their own emissions.

We still drive fuel guzzling cars and fly overseas or interstate for holidays and so on.

Why is it so difficult for us to adapt to a future without fossil fuels?

According to Young and Rogers (2023) writing in The Conversation, people generally want simple answers, solutions that work, things basically to stay the same, a sense of security and quick fixes.

2024 Youth Parliament NSW applications now open THE Myall Coast’s youth leaders are invited to apply to participate in the Y NSW’s Youth Parliament program in 2024, with submissions opening on 24 November.

Young people in Years 10, 11 and 12 (or equivalent age) in all 93 NSW state electorates are invited to express interest.

The Y (formerly YMCA) Youth Parliament provides a unique platform for individuals to actively participate in the democratic process and advocate for issues that they are passionate about.

The Y NSW is calling on young people from across the state to get involved.

No experience is required, and people from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with financial sponsorships open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people living with a disability, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, those experiencing financial hardship, living in out-of-home care or rural areas, and refugee and asylumseekers.

“At the Y, we believe in the power of inspired young people and Youth Parliament offers the opportunity for our youth to learn about the parliamentary system, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and engage in constructive debates about issues that matter to them and their communities,” explained Executive Director/Interim CEO of the Y NSW, Prue Warrilow.

Bowlo wishes farewell to familiar face

BULAHDELAH Bowling Club’s long-standing Secretary/Manager Allan Freihaut has retired from the business after eleven years of service.

Mr Freihaut has led the Club, alongside the board, through a period of significant growth in challenging economic times.

“It was somewhat of a struggle, particularly during and after COVID,” said Mr Freihaut.

“I’ve seen some great growth in the last few years and I wish for the club’s continued success into the

future.”

Facing the general decline of lawn bowls as a sport, Allan considered creative approaches to ensure the club survived and thrived.

The major change in his time was the departure of the road workers who had been working on the Bulahdelah bypass, a group who contributed significantly to the club’s finances.

In their absence it was a matter of restructuring the business and finding new opportunities.

The arrival of grey nomads has provided a significant economic advantage in the last few years, with many

“We saw a lot of firsttimers,” Christie McIlvride, Manager of Elite Energy, the triathlon’s operator, told NOTA. “Barrington Coast is a big sponsor, of our 725 registered racers, about 55 percent were male, and 89 percent came from outside the area.”

Ranging in age from twelve to 77, racers came from all across NSW, with some even travelling from Queensland and Victoria to compete.

“One inspiring young mother was competing for the first time after overcoming serious surgery, and a 70th birthdaygentleman had gifted

himself a triathlon debut,” Ms McIlvride said.

“Another gentleman flew up from Melbourne, secretly arranging with us to surprise his daughter, whom we summoned ‘to see an official', and witnessed their happy reunion.”

Kookaburras heralded the final long running legs along Jimmys Beach, where Pindimar Bundabah Community Association volunteers handed out water, energy drinks and gels, cola and lollies for hours, made sweeter by the donation of $100 per volunteer that Elite Energy will be making to their affiliated community groups in gratitude for their assistance.

TUESDAY 21st November: The final of the Club Championship Major Singles was played Robyn Beaumont v Bette Saillard, 22 ends were bowled before there was a winner. Interestingly both competitors won 11 ends which indicates the “tightness” of this match, the deciding factor was Robyn managed to score a 4 on the 7th end and won by 3 shots on 4 ends whereas Bette only had multiples on 2 of her winning ends, hence Robyn victorious the score 26 v 13. A wonderful display of draw bowling by both competitors, congratulations to both of you and especially to Robyn on winning this event for the 4th consecutive year, TGWBC Club Champion.

Social bowls played 2 games of Triples just 16 ends Maryanne Cuss, Jeanette Emmett and Karen Green lead took control of their game on the 3rd end defeating Loretta Baker, Irene Roberts and Sandra Leisemann 14 v 8. On the 7th end Pam Gilchrist, Jean Glover and Dawn Jones were down by 8 shots (10 v 2) v Kris MacDonald, Annette Linney (visitor) and Pat Baker. I could make the comment Pat’s team were lucky to end up with a win here considering they only scored 2 shots over the next 9 ends compared to Dawn’s crew who gained 9 points ultimately just losing by 1, 12 v 11. Nov 26 The second round of the Club Minor Singles was played in warm to hot weather tempered by a nice sea breeze.

There were the usual surprising results, and a few new players were yet to showcase their skills.

to a great afternoon of bowls.

Tony Butler accounted for Graham Reynolds 25-8.

Andy Docherty had a handy lead early and played a few “get out of jail” cards but just could not clinch the win against Gareth Cuss. Gareth eventually won 25-23.

The Rod Morrison / John Payne match went on for ages with Rod eventually enjoying a 25-23 win.

Dark horse Colm Hands was an unknown quantity before this match, but he accounted for Dave Garcia 25-18.

After his good win yesterday, Doug Andrews

could not maintain his form against his opponent Wayne Duggan Wayne won this game, 25-14.

In the remaining game Ron Berczelly outlasted Graham Uff 25-16.

Next Saturday the quarter-final of this competition will be played with Tony Butler taking on Gareth Cuss.

Col Hands will oppose Rod Morrison.

Rick Islaub will be up against Wayne Duggan.

Ron Berczelly takes on John Moore.

This competition remains wide open with any of these

contestants in with a chance.

The final will be played on Sunday 10 December and the final of the Club Triples will be played on the same day.

The proposed dates for the Cub 4’s, scheduled for January, and the Mixed Pairs, scheduled for February, will have to been swapped around.

while Club Captain Steve Rees swam consistently solidly across his events.

“Christine was the fastest swimmer in the Club in three of her events, and Leon won the 200m breaststroke after a five-year hiatus,” Mr Rees told NOTA. “They ended up battling head-to-head in the 50m breaststroke.”

“Alicia-Jane Laney, attending her first competition, delivered the most courageous swim of the meet on her leg of the hotly contested relay, helping set the team up for a narrow 4/100-of-a-second win!”

Twenty other clubs joined the Myall Masters, ranging from the Mid-North Coast, Hunter, Central Coast, across Sydney, and the Illawarra.

“Overall, in the total points-score, Myall Masters Club placed eighth out of 21 competing clubs, and the average points score for each swimmer placed Myall Masters a very creditable fourth at the meet,” Mr Rees added.

“Myall Masters has many other enthusiastic and committed swimmers who are making great progress with their swimming this year and we are expecting some spectacular results in our Club Swim Meet which will be held at Tea Gardens Pool on 10 February, 2024.”

Always looking for new members of all standards, the Club accepts swimmers eighteen-years plus who would like to improve their fitness and swimming ability while enjoying a great social atmosphere.

The main ingredient in this no-fuss cooking series is, of course, chef Jamie Oliver and his exuberant style. Peppered with endless enthusiasm and a generous sprinkling of zealous commentary– “Come on!” he quips, Lleyton Hewitt style, and his “Look at that!” is perhaps slightly superfluous – it’s nonetheless a winning recipe.

It’s easy to fall under Oliver’s engaging spell, especially when he’s so keen to do us all a favour and “keep the flavour up, and the cost down”. In tonight’s budget specialities, there’s a meal that makes use of pantry staples and a frozen-berry crumble, as well as takeaway-style homemade crispy pork noodles.

Mercifully, there’s no canned baked beans in sight.

Rugged British adventurer Levison Wood is a pro at putting himself in perilous, breathtaking situations in the wild, but he’s also a skilled photographer by trade. In this intimate, threepart series exploring endangered species, there’s an emphasis on stunning scenery. Last week’s premiere saw him in Borneo with orangutans. Tonight, in part two of three, Levison is off the beaten track in Namibia on the lookout for the rare desert lion, of which only around 100 are left in the wild. With a focus on the effects of climate change and habitat destruction, it’s a poignant and hopeful expedition. Next week, Greenland’s polar bears are in Levison’s sights.
