War Mural Vandalised THE War Mural at Anzac Park, Tea Gardens has been vandalised, with large sections torn down and left broken on the grass.

Tea Gardens RSL subBranch secretary Jenny Ross-Henry described the needless vandalism as “disgusting”.

“It is shocking considering we only got a grant from DVA a few years ago to restore it,” Jenny said.

Sub-Branch members became aware of the damage on Saturday afternoon.

“We are assuming it happened Friday night,” Jenny said.

The RSL sub-Branch have plans to erect a sign with information about the mural, and the community effort that led to its creation.

“It is important for people to know how it came about.

“It was a real community effort for a little country town,” Jenny said.

“It is quite poignant.”

The mural project, which kicked off in 2009, was the result of collaboration between the Myall Riverside Art Walk Committee, Tea Gardens RSL sub-Branch and volunteer students and staff from Tea Gardens Public School.

The mural’s design was created with input from local students, who listened to stories from five local returned servicemen, drawing pictures inspired by the stories.

These pictures were used by local artist Julianne Gosper to help form the final design, which features the silhouettes of local servicemen and servicewomen.

The design was then transposed onto large boards by local artist Jen Nichols, before Jock Williams applied the finishing touches.

“We have plans this Remembrance Day to place a sign near the mural to explain the significance of it and also place under it a time capsule from our Remembrance Day service in 2018.

“The people in the mural project were locals, the RSL members have gone but we still honour their ideas for this beautiful wall.

“We plan to invite all involved to be with us on Remembrance Day 2022,” Jenny said.

violence related assaults, sexual assaults or stealing offences, however there were significant increases to several offences over the past two years.

These included: break

and enter dwelling (increase by 35.9 percent), break and enter non-dwelling (increase by 83.7 percent) and motor vehicle theft (increase by 20.8 percent).

The MidCoast LGA also displayed an increase to the following ratios of NSW rate of criminal incidents per 100,000 population: break and enter dwelling (increase

to 2.4), break and enter nondwelling (increase to 3.9) and ‘other’ stealing offences (increase to 2.1).

In the twelve months to March 2022 there were 551 domestic violence related assaults, 419 non-domestic violence related assaults, 124 sexual assaults, 150 other sexual offences, 15 robberies, 492 break and

enter dwellings, 322 break and enter non-dwellings, 186 motor vehicle thefts, 348 steal from motor vehicles, 212 steal from retail stores, 852 other stealing offences, 864 malicious damage to property offence and one murder offence reported to authorities.

These were significantly higher reports than the

period of twelve months to March 2021, which saw over a hundred less domestic violence related offences reported, almost half the number of break and enter non-dwellings offences reported and over 200 less ‘other’ stealing offences reported.

The state-wide average showed that many high-

THE City of Newcastle is calling on the NSW Government to plan strategically and develop a state-wide approach for a sustainable sand nourishment program to support local councils as they develop Coastal Management Programs under the NSW Government's coastal management framework.

Following the increasing frequency of significant weather events that cause erosion damage to beaches along the NSW coastline, local councils may be prompted to include sand nourishment as a solution to managing coastal hazards as part of their individual Coastal Management Programs.

Mayor Nuatali Nelmes is strongly advocating for the requirement for a State-led sand nourishment strategy, and will be discussing the need at the NSW Deputy Premier's Stockton Beach Taskforce meeting this week.

"We've developed a Coastal Management Program for Stockton and identified that we need an initial 2.4 million cubic metres of sand on Stockton Beach as part of our mass sand nourishment strategy and then annual sand top ups to maintain beach amenity and the buffer that mass sand nourishment will provide the Stockton community," Lord Mayor Nelmes said.

sourcing and accessing the sand required to deliver a mass sand nourishment strategy for Stockton Beach.

"Our Council won't be the only council to identify sand nourishment as a solution to managing coastal hazards and we expect many councils will include sand nourishment in their coastal management programs,” Lord Mayor Nelmes said.

Nelmes says that a sustainable sand nourishment program which is developed and led by the NSW Government would provide significant efficiencies and economies of scale for local councils.

"The City of Newcastle has already committed significant resources to completing investigations and to understanding environmental impacts

and approval pathways for what will rapidly become a matter of state significance for the NSW Government, so it makes sense to have a holistic approach and solution to the problem.

"We would like to see the NSW Government lead the collaborative effort that is needed across the state to develop a sustainable sand nourishment program including approvals and ownership of licensing

for possible offshore sand extraction,” Mayor Nelmes concluded.

The City of Newcastle was one of the first councils in the State to have its Coastal Management Program for Stockton certified, under the Coastal Management Act 2016, by the NSW Minister for Local Government in August 2020.

From 1 April 2022, parties to family law proceedings can apply directly to the Court for information held by the ATO about the superannuation interests of their spouse, former spouse or former de facto partner.

Superannuation forms part of the pool of assets to be divided in the event of separation.

Circumstances arise where parties refuse to disclose their superannuation interests or under-disclose their superannuation interests, which can create delay and increase costs in resolving property settlements. The new information-sharing process should make it harder for parties to hide or under-disclose their superannuation assets in family law proceedings, and hopefully reduce the time, cost and complexity for parties seeking superannuation information.

The process is facilitated through the Court’s online Portal, and the Court anticipates that responses will be provided

within 7 days; providing an efficient and cost-effective way to obtain the information. There are limits on how the information can be used, notably that any information received through the process is only to be used for the purpose of the family law proceedings.

Information sharing between the Court and Government departments has been effective in parenting matters, through cooperation with the Department of Communities & Justice (formerly DOCS); but to date has not been utilised as extensively in property matters.

This new process is another way in which the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia is seeking to achieve its overarching purpose of facilitating the just resolution of disputes according to law as quickly, inexpensively and efficiently as possible.

Myall Coast Budget Highlights

THE 2022-23 Budget for NSW has been announced.

Highlights for the Myall Coast community include road funding, seniors travel, health services and cost-of-living measures.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead welcomed more than $9.3 million in funding committed to improve the state of MidCoast Council run roads in the Myall Lakes.

“Roads are an incredibly important element within our region, particularly considering poor conditions which were made worse by heavy rainfall earlier this year.

“The NSW Nationals in government have previously provided more than $100 million to MidCoast Council for road upgrades.

“Another $9.3 million within this 2022-23 budget will help to improve safety and ensure the Myall Lakes is an even better place to call home” Mr Bromhead said.

The NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card has been continued, providing $250 towards fuel, taxi travel from regional providers and NSW TrainLink pre-booked tickets for regional pensioners.

Funding has been re-allocated for the Tech Savvy Seniors program to ensure seniors are not left behind in the increasingly digital world, whilst events such as the NSW Seniors Festival and Premier’s Gala Concerts are on the cards for 2023.

Over $7.2 billion has been committed to cost-of-living measures, including a new Premier’s Back to School Program which will run from 1 January 2023 to 30 June 2023, giving $150 to parents to help purchase school uniforms, shoes, bags and textbooks

as well as other stationery.

Funding for the environment and heritage in the Budget include $598 million over ten years for National Parks and Wildlife Service to deliver 250 permanent jobs, including 200 firefighters, and critical infrastructure and fleet upgrades, $286.2 million over four years to implement the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 and NSW Plastics Action Plan and $206.2 million over ten years in natural capital for a Sustainable Farming Program, rewarding farmers who opt into an accreditation program to improve carbon and biodiversity outcomes.

Other highlights in the 2022-23 Budget include more than $149 million to reduce costs for regional patients including an expansion of the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAS), $33 billion investment in health and recruiting more than 10,000 full-time equivalent staff to hospitals, NSW Ambulance and health services across the State, $16.5 billion over ten years to break the barriers to opportunity for women and help give our children the best start in life including by investing in affordable and accessible childcare and creating a universal year of pre-kindergarten in the year before school and $2.8 billion to help more families find a place to call home, including $728.6 million for tax reform to help people own their first home.

Varroa Mite detected in Beehives

THE NSW Government is urging beekeepers across the state to safeguard their industry after biosecurity surveillance detected Varroa mite in hives at the Port of Newcastle.

On 24 June 2022, the Varroa Mite was detected in the Port of Newcastle’s biosecurity beehives, threatening the bee industry.

The Varroa destructor, commonly known as the Varroa Mite, is a parasite which spreads viruses that cripple bees’ ability to fly, gather food, emerge from their cell to be born and significantly reduces their ability to pollinate crops.

Australia is currently the only continent free of the parasite, following eradications of detections in Queensland and Victoria.

NSW Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders says swift measures are being taken to contain the disease, which is the most serious pest for honey bees worldwide.

“We have immediately launched an eradication plan which involved setting up a biosecurity zone, containing the infected hives

and euthanising the bees,” Mr Saunders said.

“Australia is the only major honey producing country free from Varroa mite and if it has the chance to establish here, it could cost the honey industry more than $70 million a year.”

A Biosecurity Zone was established covering areas within a 50-kilometre radius of the Port of Newcastle.

Beekeepers within this zone must not move or tamper with their hives.

The 50km radius from the Port of Newcastle extends north past Nelson Bay, south to Wyong and west to Branxton including Cessnock, Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Tea Gardens.

Beekeepers must also notify the NSW Department of Primary Industries with the location of all of their hives.

On Sunday night, a statewide emergency order was issued to control the movement of bees across NSW and stop the spread of varroa mite.

“After the first detection of varroa mite at the Port of Newcastle on Friday, DPI is investigating potentially

contaminated hives outside the initial 50 kilometre biosecurity zone,” Mr Saunders said.

“That includes a property near Trangie in central west NSW, where containment and control activities will be carried out tomorrow (Monday).

“If varroa mite settles in the state, it will have severe consequences, so we’re taking every precaution and action needed to contain the parasite and protect the local honey industry and pollination.”

The statewide order is a fourth tier general emergency zone that has been added to the existing zones, in which no bees are allowed to be moved across

NSW. A 25km surveillance zone is also still active around the site, where officials are monitoring and inspecting managed and feral honey bees to limit the extent of the incursion.

A 10km emergency zone around the Port remains in place, where eradication plans will be enacted to treat hives, including at a new fourth property that has been identified.

“Biosecurity is one of my top priorities and beekeepers have been working with the Government through the National Bee Pest Surveillance Program to act as an early warning system,” Mr Saunders said.

“If it weren’t for their diligence in monitoring hives and catch boxes at strategic locations around our ports and airports, this threat may have gone undetected.”

The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council is currently working closely with the NSW Department of Primary Industries to handle the threat.

Acting chief executive Danny Le Feuvre said the NSW DPI had staff going door to door to make sure all hives were accounted for in the Newcastle and Port Stephens areas.

POLICE Graduates Eight police dogs and 200 probationary constables have been sworn in this week following Class 353’s Police Attestation ceremony.

The police dogs completed the NSW Police Detection and General Purpose Novice Courses in 2019 and 2021, but have not been able to graduate until now due to COVID restrictions.

The 200 probationary constables have been deployed to police stations across the state this week to commence a year of onthe-job training.

Of the probationary constables attested, 169 were born in Australia and 31 were born overseas.

Their countries of origin include India, England, Iraq, Belgium, New Zealand, China and South Africa.

Four recruits are indigenous, with one joining through the Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program.

Port Stephens Hunter Police District has been allocated one new probationary constable whilst the Manning/Great Lakes Police District has two new probationary constables joining the area.

DEAR Jasminda, WE are in the market to buy a used car for our son.

He's been scanning ads on social media and has finally located a great looking car, but it's in Western Australia.

The poor woman selling it had to move there after her husband passed away so her mum could mind her kids because she works in the air force.

She's sending the car down (no transport cost to us) so we have five days to view it before making a decision and the money will be held in a type of trust account in case we don't want it (which I doubt; it seems like an amazing buy).

I guess I am just old school in terms of buying a car from a backyard or a sales yard.

Any advice?

Jimmys Beach Restoration DEAR News Of The Area, I WAS surprised to see in the NOTA of 23 June 2022, a photo of a truck delivering sand to the eroded area on Jimmys Beach.

I have attached a photo of a specialised vehicle doing the same job back in January 1985.

I think it's fair to say that after 37 years and millions of dollars, the sand replenishment programme is unsuccessful.

Gordon Grainger mentioned that “the natural entrance known as Myall Point should be pursued.”

Bob Adams (of Hawks Nest) referred to this in his letter to the NOTA on 16 June 2005.

He stated, “In 1979, I had an uneasy feeling when the dredge moved in to deepen Corrie Creek.”

Again in a letter to NOTA In 2009 he stated, “It can be easily demonstrated using university education and research papers that the dredging of the lime kilns channel has caused both the short cut blockage and the Jimmys beach disaster.”

NAIDOC Week activities at Karuah CELEBRATIONS for 2022 NAIDOC Week will be in full swing from 3 to 10 July, after COVID-19 kept crowds away in 2020 and 2021.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s great to be able to celebrate NAIDOC Week with the community again.

Tonight, host Leigh Sales (pictured) steps down as presenter of this flagship program and reflects back on some of her favourite and noteworthy moments. It’s a fitting conclusion for the exemplary reporter, who has weathered criticism, difficult guests and emotional interviews with aplomb. Sarah Ferguson, who is taking over next week, has a tough act to follow.

Origin stories are usually a domain dominated by Hollywood blockbusters, but the outstanding Mystery Road, which follows laconic outback policeman Jay Swan, enters the fray with this reboot. The original series starred Aaron Pedersen in the protagonist’s role across two series and films. This series looks at how the policeman’s career began.

Expect the same moody, stunning scenery and film noir feel as we go back to 1999. A younger Swan (this time played

by Mark Coles Smith, pictured) arrives in Jardine, a mining town where his father lives, to start a new job. A complicated investigation, blossoming love and past trauma collide.

This four-part murder-mystery drama, starring Rarriwuy Hick (pictured, Wentworth), Luke Arnold (Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS), Miranda Otto (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Emilie de Ravin (Lost), was filmed in the MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs and features the Arrernte language. Robyn had a win in her first match of the Sectional Playoffs defeating Michelle Smith (Gerringong) 25 v 15.

Robyn needs to win her final sectional match on Monday 27 June bowling against

Christine Gordon (Harbord) to make the playoffs, Monday afternoon now just 32 bowlers left.

Congratulations to Robyn on her achievements.

CORKS popped and the champagne was flowing (well actually it was beer) at Karuah on Saturday last when Brenden Revell won out in the Club Major Singles final.

Stephen Gilchrist got away to an early lead and while he kept on playing well, Brenden just kept playing better and got away to achieve his third Club Championship in five years.

Club Secretary and marker on the day, Greg Mungoven, said that Brenden just played his socks off in the later stages and ended up with a very credible win.

It was a very cool afternoon and the big crowd overflowed out of the Club house onto the surrounds of the green to witness a game that will be spoken about for many years (at least by Brenden).

A popular and colourful Club character, Brenden was overjoyed by his win.

The knowledgeable crowd saw some great bowls played and there was applause at great shots played at almost every end.

In other news, Karuah had a solid Club win away at Dora Creek last week.

Two of the Ladies Club members (Pam Cembala and Christine Davies) played in the representative fixture a week or so ago for the Coast versus the City team at Raymond Terrace, where the local Coast players had a fiercely competitive win.

Lots of great social games were played at the Club this week with President Jim and his wife Angela experiencing a thrilling tie early in the week.

Programmed social bowls resume this coming week.

If you would like to learn how to play this exciting and social sport, or are an experienced bowler already, games are held each Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Names are required by 9:30 and games begin at 10:00 both days, loan equipment is available, ring the Club for details.

Visitors are made most welcome at both of these non uniform mixed social days.
