TEA Gardens/Hawks Nest has said goodbye to two leading wildlife volunteers who have made a lasting impact on the local environment over the past two decades.

Jill and Peter Madden were farewelled by fellow volunteers at a special lunch at Hawks Nest Golf Club, before they move to the South Coast to be nearer their children and grandchildren.

The Maddens came to the Tea Gardens area in 2003 to build and run the well-known Eco Cottages at Bombah Point and soon after became active members of the Myall Koala and Environment

Six years later they started the Bitou Busters to tackle invasive weeds along the dunes and in coastal bushland.

Jill eventually became MKEG President and for many years has been coordinator of the more than 40-strong Bitou Buster volunteers.

MKEG secretary Ian Morphett said it was so visible to see all the work they had done throughout the area.

Steve Howard, Volunteer Community Liaison Officer at MidCoast Council, who supports the Bitou Busters in their work, gave thanks to Jill and Peter for their dedication to native bush regeneration.

“A highlight of my day was when I opened up my computer in the morning to find Jill’s report and photos of the Bitou Busters after each session.”

Over the last seventeen years, Steve has organised with Jill and Peter more than 200 koala food tree stock to give away each year at events such as the annual Myall River Festival, a total of 3,600 trees.

“Large parts of the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area are now more beautiful and koala-friendly because of those tree giveaways,” Steve said.

In 2018, through Jill and Peter’s contacts with National Parks, MKEG were able to invite wildlife ecologist George Madani and a small team of ecologists and volunteers to carry out a survey of Myall Coast koala habitat and where they were found.

Over many years during Myall River Festivals, Jill and Peter organised guided tours along the Michael Rowe Memorial Walk from Mungo Brush Road, Hawks Nest, to the ocean, after organising working bees

with volunteers to open and clear the path.

Leaflets were made with photos and descriptions of 44 wildflowers found on the walk.

Jill and Peter also clocked up fifteen years working as volunteers at the Tea Gardens Visitor’s Centre.

Under Jill and Peter’s leadership, MKEG and the Bitou Busters established an avenue of koala food trees in Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest, in memory of John Davis, Great Lakes Council’s Tree Management Officer. Eleven successful stands of different species were nurtured by regular watering, mulching and weeding.

of the walk with the installation of ten tree guards with metal plaques with brief information about some of our local animals and birds.

The current MKEG president, Richard Streamer, presented Jill and Peter with a Certificate of Appreciation together with life membership.

Their Bitou Buster Coordinator role has been divided between three members; Trish Blair, Sharon Taylor and Adrienne Ingram.

Adrienne said Jill and Peter’s departure was bittersweet.

“They will definitely be greatly missed as friends and volunteers,” she said. “But they are moving on to a new stage in their lives with the family they love, so we wish them well.”

Bob Reid, President of the North Arm Cove Community Association, says that they are seeking feedback from North Arm Cove and Carrington residents.

“The plan was developed by a steering group of North Arm Cove residents under the guidance of Council

officers, and the group endeavoured to make sure that it reflected the needs and desires of the North Arm Cove and Carrington communities, as expressed in the submissions to the Council postcard and online survey in late 2020, and community submissions to Council before then,” Mr Reid said.

Present and past members, as well as locals with a keen interest in

family history, were invited to attend.

Many of the group’s original members were in attendance, with founder Margaret Munright on hand to cut the celebratory cake.

Margaret’s husband, Terry Munright, spoke to the engaged crowd about

coastal communities so that MidCoast Council and State and Federal Governments are informed of them and can help facilitate their implementation.

Following a survey of residents and landowners in Carrington, North Arm Cove and Tahlee in 2020, a number of key themes arose.

“The key theme evident in the survey is that residents love the bush and water that surrounds them and love living in quiet and peaceful villages,” the

The plan does not include issues related to the development of and payment of rates for the land in the North Arm Cove and Carrington paper subdivisions.

However, it does include infrastructure and service issues identified by paper subdivision landowners.

“Importantly, the preparation of this plan showed that long term leadership and commitment from both Council and community members

will be needed to drive implementation and achieve successful outcomes.

“The North Arm Cove and Carrington communities have small populations, with many residents being over 60 years of age and to support the implementation of the plan, the community will rely heavily on local volunteers from a diverse range of skill sets, with guidance, support, resources and funding provided by Council and the NSW and Federal Governments,” the group

said.

The highest priority initiatives in the plan include weed eradication, a community jetty and boat ramp, park upgrades, improving bushfire protection and fire trails, sealing of the road to Tahlee and restoration of historical buildings.

The Bulahdelah Men’s Shed cooked a sausage sizzle, while musician Kyle Reinhart supplied the entertainment.

Prior to the event, Myall Coast real estate Debra Thompson presented the CWA with $200 towards the cause.

In February, Debra began donating $200 from the commission of every property sale to a community group or organisation in need.

The Bulahdelah CWA raises funds for a variety of organisations, mainly local causes, including Bulahdelah Central School.

“The most recent donation was for families who couldn’t afford to send their children on school camps,” said Glenda.

The CWA continues to host its famous Devonshire Tea on the last Wednesday of the month.

“People can come in for a cup of tea and a handmade scone with jam and cream.

Planning proposal for Tea Gardens Highway Service Centre rejected

INSPIRED by the tragic death of a group member’s niece to suicide, the Bulahdelah Country Women’s Association (CWA) threw a fundrasier for the Black Dog Institute on Sunday, 22 May at the Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

SInce its foundation in 1985 as the ‘Mood Disorders Unit’ at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, the Black Dog Institute has been at the forefront of mental health research in Australia.

The organisation investigates mental health across the lifespan, continually seeking improvements to clinical practice and treatment.

The CWA’s fundraiser has so far raised $1500, with money still being donated.

All funds raised will support the Black Dog Institute’s mental health research, education programs and support services.

Bulahdelah CWA President Glenda Bell said Black Dog was a worthy recipient of fundraising support.

“The idea came about as one of our members recently lost her niece through suicide.

Councillor Miller said that there were four predominant reasons as to why the proposal should not progress to Gateway Determination.

“The Planning Proposal is inconsistent with Ministerial Direction 7.3 Commercial and Retail Development along the Pacific Highway, North Coast from March 2022.

“Specifically, the subject site is not included in the listed localities for where the establishment of highway service centre is permitted and has not demonstrated that this inconsistency is only of ‘minor significance’.

“The applicant has been requested to undertake negotiations with Transport for NSW in relation to accessing a future Highway Service Centre from the Station Creek Rest area.

“Without this matter being resolved and the proposal being supported by Transport for NSW, Council is not in a position to support the planning proposal,” Cr Miller said.

He also stated that no evidence has been provided to indicate that a Highway Service Centre on the site can be serviced by water or reticulated sewerage in addition to “significant biodiversity issues identified in the Biodiversity Assessment Report that cannot be overcome by management through mechanisms such as a Planning Agreement”.

The Planning Proposal will not progress further.

Man charged following Tea Gardens Crash

A MAN has been charged after a double fatal crash in Tea Gardens in March.

Shortly before 1.40pm on Thursday 24 March 2022, emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens, near Viney

Creek Road West, after reports of a crash involving two cars and a motorcycle.

An Isuzu D-Max utility travelling southbound collided with a motorcycle and a Toyota station wagon, both travelling northbound.

The male motorcyclist died at the scene.

The female driver of the Toyota was trapped by confinement; and she died at the scene a short time later.

A female passenger of the Toyota was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Following enquiries, about 9am on Thursday 26 May 2022, officers arrested a 59-year-old man at Raymond Terrace Police Station.

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council has extended current agreements with The Y NSW for the management of MidCoast Council pools.

Following the recent Council meeting on 25 May 2022, Councillors agreed to extend the current management agreements with the Y NSW for a period of twelve months from 1 July 2022.

The Y NSW currently manages Council aquatic centres at Forster, Taree, Wingham and Tea Gardens.

On 23 February 2022 Council resolved, inter alia, that a review of the management and operations of all public and community swimming pools (not just those managed by the YMCA) be carried out.

At a Council workshop

on 4 May 2022, an indicative program for the review and subsequent potential implementation process was outlined to councillors, noting that these time frames could change during the program of works.

With a program of works including an Industry specialist advisor and appointment, stakeholder engagement, initial plans and tender documentation requiring a timeframe of approximately 46-52 weeks, it was recommended that the existing management contracts should be extended.

Brooke Atkins, Y NSW Executive Leader Operations, told News Of The Area that The Y NSW is excited about the extension of the management contract.

“The Y NSW is thrilled to continue to service the Mid

Coast communities, including Manning, Wingham, Forster and Tea Gardens for a further twelve months and it is our hope to continue to service these communities beyond that period.

“The ability to provide a wide range of programs such as fitness classes and teaching critical life skills such as swimming lessons, is especially important in communities residing next to the beach,” Ms Atkins said.

The Y NSW have been part of the Great Lakes community for over 30 years, beginning work in 1991.

“We have a rich history in the MidCoast and therefore we feel extremely connected to these communities through our work providing recreation programs we know to be central to the health and wellbeing of all community members,

In 2020-21 the Libraries lent out more items than at any time since amalgamation.

“This data clearly demonstrates that we have

been more than resilient throughout COVID. “It suggests that, in spite of pandemics and disasters, and in the face of the ongoing growth in the online world, MidCoast Council Libraries are as relevant now as they have ever been,” Chris said.

Be safe not sorry this winter

THIS year’s NSW Rural Fire Service Winter Fire Safety Campaign’s theme is ‘Be Safe, Not Sorry’.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Commissioner Paul Baxter says that this theme is essential following NSW Brigades attending 3,502 home fires last year.

“Please ensure you have

a home fire escape plan so your children know what to do if a fire breaks out.

“It’s also important to fireproof your home as much as possible by having working smoke alarms,” Commissioner Baxter said.

NSW Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Ben Millington said there are steps residents can take to prevent a fire from breaking

out in their home.

“It can be as simple as keeping flammable objects a ‘metre from the heater’, not leaving cooking unattended and not using outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside,” Assistant Commissioner Millington said.

Fire and Rescue NSW advises the public to: check and maintain smoke alarms,

keep any drying clothes or anything flammable at least a metre from the heater, clean and maintain any fireplaces, not use outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside your home, check electric blankets are safe for use and never go to bed or leave home with your electric blanket on, not overheat wheat bags in the microwave, not overload power boards, clean the

lint filter from your clothes dryer after each use, never leave cooking unattended and aways use candles under adult supervision and do not leave them unattended.

Most importantly, they advise everyone to have a ‘home fire escape plan’ and practice it regularly with all family members.

FRNSW has attended 1,226 home fires since the beginning of 2022.

There were 3,502 home fires in 2021.

NSW Government increases support payments for energy bills PORT STEPHENS households experiencing difficulty paying their energy bills will be able to access up to $1,600 a year in help after Treasurer and Energy Minister Matt Kean increased support payments.

The Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) program has helped 49,000 NSW households

experiencing short-term financial hardship with their energy bills.

Now each application will have its limit increased from $300 to $400, up to a maximum of $1,600 a year.

“Eligible customers can receive payment assistance of up to $400 per application for electricity and up to $400 per application for gas bills twice a year,” Mr Kean said.

“This means the annual maximum limit of vouchers

has increased from $1,200 to $1,600 per household.”

The boost to assistance for electricity and gas bills comes as the Australian Energy Regulator released its final determination today showing NSW energy customers on standing offers will face price increases from July 1.

The price increases are driven primarily by external factors including the Russian invasion of Ukraine which

has affected supply and led to global price pressures on coal and gas.

Extreme weather events in NSW and Queensland have also had an impact on prices.

The extra assistance is part of a $330 million per year package the NSW government is providing which also includes energy rebates to around one million households.

“With cost-of-living

pressures increasing, colder weather arriving and days shortening, we want to make sure households in NSW not only keep the lights on but keep their families safe, warm and comfortable,” Mr Kean said.

Eligible households can also apply for different rebates including the Low Income Household Rebate, Gas Rebate, Family Energy Rebate, and Seniors Energy Rebate.

Flu Season NSW Ambulance is urging the community to get their influenza vaccinations ahead of what is set to be a busy winter flu season.

NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan says it is crucial members of the public have the best protection against viruses as we enter a change in season.

“Having had the Coronavirus is no protection for the influenza virus, they are two very different things.

“If you are a person who remains unvaccinated for either of those, my message

is to please get vaccinated for both,” Commissioner Morgan said.

Fire Appliances The NSW Rural Fire Service is working with Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) to improve the protection of firefighters through the better design of fire appliances.

Over the past eighteen months, MUARC has been conducting a detailed analysis of the NSW RFS vehicle fleet, as well as safety-related data, to help identify key risks that will be used to focus the design of suitable solutions.

It has now reached the next key stage of the project

and the NSW RFS is seeking input from members on vehicle safety via an online survey.

Wild Mushrooms The wet weather in NSW has resulted in wild mushrooms popping up everywhere.

The NSW Poisons Centre has seen a recent spike in both the number of calls and subsequent hospital presentations related to people eating wild

mushrooms with many of these calls from people who had foraged for mushrooms.

Australia is home to many poisonous wild mushrooms and some like the Death Cap mushroom can lead to organ damage and death if ingested.

Many poisonous mushrooms in Australia look similar to edible wild mushrooms found in Europe or Asia and NSW Poisons Control says that cooking or boiling poisonous mushrooms does not make them safe to eat.

“Stay safe and only eat store-bought mushrooms.

“To prevent children ingesting wild mushrooms, check your garden or

playground areas and remove and dispose of any mushrooms which have appeared,” the Poisons Control Centre said.

Anyone who has been exposed to wild mushrooms should call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice.

Flubot Scams Since August 2021, many Australians have been getting scam text messages about missed calls, voicemails or deliveries.

Scamwatch reports that they have received over 16,000 reports of these scams.

These scams have also already been a problem overseas in 2021.

Claire Pontin explained.

“It is an important document not just for us at MidCoast Council, but for the whole of our community. It captures the ideas, priorities and values of our community.

“It tells a story of what is important to us and the future we want for our region.”

Mayor Pontin said the plan, which was first developed in 2018, has been updated and now Council is checking in with the community to ensure it still captures their broad

aspirations.

“Since the development of the original Community Strategic Plan we have experienced drought, recordbreaking bushfires and floods, and a COVID-19 pandemic.

“Through all this, the MidCoast community has demonstrated a great sense of connectedness, capacity and resilience.

“This is a refreshed version of our first Community Strategic Plan to capture these changes in our community.”

The community strategic plan guides Council in developing its four-year

delivery plan and annual operational plan.

These documents focus on how we will achieve the priorities and actions that the community has identified.

The Delivery Plan outlines how the newlyelected Council will deliver the community’s identified priorities from the community strategic plan during this term of office.

The 2022-2023 Operational Plan and Budget sets out services from these strategic plans which will be delivered during this financial year.

The Resourcing Strategy

describes how staff, assets, financial and information resources will be used to deliver the above plans.

“We invite everyone to take a look at the four documents, particularly if you want to know how your priorities are translated into on-ground services for our community,” Mayor Pontin said.

“Your feedback will help shape what we deliver for you.”

There are many variants of the Flubot text messages, but often they ask you to download an app to track or organise a time for a delivery, hear a voicemail message, or view photos that have been uploaded.

However, the message is fake, there is no delivery, voicemail, or photos uploaded and the app is malicious software called Flubot.

Android phones and iPhones can both receive texts from the Flubot.

Scamwatch reminds all residents that if you receive one of these messages, do not click or tap on the link and instead, delete the message immediately.

Child Safe Action Plan endorsed

MIDCOAST Council has endorsed its Child Safe Action Plan 2022-2026 at its recent Council meeting on 25 May 2022.

The Child Safe Action Plan was placed on public exhibition from 30 November 2021 to 15 February after being presented to Council on 24 November 2021.

Lyndie Hepple, MidCoast Council’s Community Development Coordinator,

says that this plan has a large history.

“In December 2017, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse highlighted the need for action to make organisations across Australia safe for children.

“Among the recommendations from the Royal Commission is the development of standards to ensure a nationally consistent approach to

embedding child safe cultures within organisations that engage with children and act as a vehicle to give effect to all Royal Commission recommendations.

“In December 1990 Australia was one of 194 countries that committed to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“This means that organisations and people working with children in NSW share responsibility for

keeping children safe,” Lyndie said.

In September 2019, MidCoast Council adopted the Child Protection Policy which included a commitment to becoming a Child Safe Organisation.

The decision by organisations to become Child Safe has until now been voluntary, however in November 2021 NSW Parliament passed the Children’s Guardian Amendment (Child Safe

Scheme) Bill 2021 which requires organisations like Councils to have a Child Safe Action Plan in place and to demonstrate that the organisation is working towards meeting the ten Child Safe Standards.

MidCoast Council sought feedback on the draft plan through several channels, including through Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ platform, 556 direct emails to local child-centred community organisations, flyers

distributed to schools and libraries and a workshop with MidCoast Youth Taskforce.

The plan highlights ten standards surrounding child safety recommended by the National Office for Child Safety and the NSW Child Safe Standards, recognising that child protection is everyone’s responsibility, including Council officers, families and carers of children and young people.

Development Days in response to ageing and disability abuse

By Tara CAMPBELL ON Monday 23 May, the Northern Region Police District hosted a professional development day dedicated to the investigation and response to ageing and disability abuse.

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna APM, NSW Police Force Corporate Sponsor for Ageing, Disability and Homelessness, opened the seminar which included Aged Crime Prevention Officers (ACPOs), members from regional and metropolitan Crime Prevention Units and detectives.

An additional three days of training dedicated to further developing the ACPOs skills and knowledge was conducted throughout the remainder of the week.

“Given there is an ageing population across the state and the country, it is critical that the New South Wales Police Force continues to respond and contribute positively to our communities, particularly in relation to protecting and supporting those in our community who are elderly and disabled.

“Days such as these are an important part of maintaining and achieving this goal,” Superintendent Chad Gillies said.

A time to say thank you THE past two and a half years have been immensely difficult for everyone.

From floods, bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and economic struggles, the community has been tested time and time again, but now it’s time to say thank you to those who

supported the community through these difficult times.

The combined churches in Tea Gardens are holding a service for the community to say ‘thank you’ to those who work in health services, emergency services and community and aged care services.

Steve Sylvester,

coordinator of the event, says that these services have assisted the community in more ways than one and saying thank you to them is the least that we can do.

“During the past almost three years, our community has been greatly blessed and supported by not only those who work in

these services, the many volunteers who have cared for those struggling in so many different ways – whether it be caring for a partner, delivering meals or providing transport.

“We’re holding a service for the community to say thank you to the individuals who serve and care for us, thank you to God for their

work and dedication and thank you that, despite problems of ‘not enough’, we in Australia have so many services that keep us safe, healthy and cared for,” Mr Sylvester said.

The service will be held at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Ogden Street in Tea Gardens on Sunday 19 June commencing at 2pm.

AN interactive ‘One Plus One’ live interview series has been announced for the Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall, featuring a variety of conversations with locals from diverse backgrounds with unique stories to tell.

Hosted by the Bulahdelah War Memorial Land Managers, the ‘One Plus One’ series, modelled

off the ABC television show of the same name, will kick off on June 8 at 7pm.

The inaugural event is titled ‘The New Age Farmer’, and will feature interviews with Andrew Yeo of Yeo Farm and Andrew Smith from Myall Pastoral Dairy Farm.

The format of the evening will focus on new

ideas and techniques that both local farmers have implemented on their properties; touching on sustainable practices in a rapidly changing environment.

Jeff Carryer, Committee Member, Bulahdelah War Memorial Land Managers said, “Both speakers are involved in a new, radical

style of farming.

“One is a dairy farmer, the other is a pig farmer, and they are both doing quite different things on farm.

“Andrew Smith comes from a long line of dairy farmers in the Bulahdelah area.

“Andrew Yeo has modelled his farm to be

highly sustainable, with an eye on climate change, and has a big interest in water movement, particularly with the sustained periods of drought and rains we have seen.

“It will be very interesting to hear about their lives, and their approach to farming,” Jeff said.

I don't mind the sound of a rooster crowing at daybreak, but this one crows from sunrise to sunset.

I’M assuming you haven’t exchanged contracts yet. Once you have, then the settlement process is usually the last hurdle you’ll have to jump before the keys to your new property are in your hand.

While you’re in the negotiation phase you’ll see that your Contract of Sale usually includes a clause clarifying the settlement as taking place 42 days (6 weeks) from exchange of Contracts.

Settlement date must be mutually agreed so there is a certain amount of ‘wriggle room’ and if you state from the outset that you need more/ less time, then you have the opportunity to reach a mutually agreed outcome before everything is set in stone. It’s important to understand that once contracts have been exchanged, should you ask for an extension, the vendor has the right to refuse. The Inner Light Anniversary

By Anne JOHNSON, Tea Gardens Family Research and Local History, Inc. IN our area we have a man who as a lad grew up at Seal Rocks where his father was the lighthouse keeper.

A mutual friend, Aileen Kierath, when discussing this fact, mentioned that her forebear was also a lighthouse keeper.

Indeed he was!

William Henry Glover was the first keeper of the Port Stephens Inner Light.

In 1857 William and his wife Margaret moved to Fly Point where he was running a cargo transport business to many places including England and New Zealand.

In 1869 he was appointed Telegraph Officer, a vital position connecting the Outer Light to Morpeth Telegraph Station so that weather and shipping reports could be sent to Sydney.

William was then appointed the first keeper of the Inner Light in 1872, and the couple with their eleven children moved into the residence in 1875.

The original wooden tower with its four kerosene lamps was replaced in 1876 with a one storey octagonal tower which was attached to the residence.

William Glover died aged 70, on 21 July, 1892.

His death was reported widely in the newspapers, all mentioning that he died while still performing his duties, with his age varying from 79 to 86!

The Sydney Morning Herald added that “he was apparently quite hale and healthy to the last”.

However the Australian Town and Country Journal embellished their report of his funeral with, “He dropped dead within a few yards of the spot where his wife was killed some years ago by being thrown out of a cart.

“The old gentleman had not gone that road since until the day of his death.”

The eleventh child of his marriage, Francis John, known as Alf, had become Assistant Keeper of the Outer Light in 1891, and later worked on every lighthouse on the NSW coast.

A grandson, Herbert William, continued the tradition, working at Norah Head lighthouse.

It is now 160 years, on May 1, since the Outer Light first shone on Fingal Island, and the 150 year anniversary for the Inner Light.

The Outer Light was fully automated and the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn in March, 1973.

The Inner Light is now an important Marine Rescue Station.

I am more adept at the reasons behind people crowing at all hours of the day, so it is hard for me to assess the reason for the rooster's alleged constant noise.

I, too, was under the impression that roosters crow to signal the start of the day, which is appealing, but this rooster is like an alarm clock with an overused snooze button.

Let's look at it from the rooster's perspective.

He may be alerting the hens to danger (the danger of a neighbour named Roger wielding an axe, for example).

Or he may be crowing about his living conditions.

Perhaps he needs a harem of hens to exhaust himself with. Clearly, though, we can't leave the solution up to the rooster.

The problem will need to be solved by your neighbour and so here are some suggestions that you can leave in his letterbox (using words cut from the newspaper, if you want to add a bit of intrigue).

There are invasive options such as a rooster collar that doesn't choke the rooster, but restricts his ability to crow with such intensity.

There is also the option of surgery.

Your neighbour could start with a small surgery that reduces the rooster's ability to crow, or move down the body to castration so he has nothing to crow about.

It all sounds rather costly and extreme though.

Best of luck. I much prefer the gentle clucking noise that hens make.

I hope this irritating cock-a-doodledo subsides in the very near future.

After a transfer, Birmingham detective Rachita Ray is handed a “culturally specific homicide”, involving the apparent honour killing of a Muslim man. Confronted with prejudice and racism from within her ranks, Ray’s investigation is, of course, far from straightforward. It’s a slow grind.

TUESDAY 24 May: The Final of the Club Championship Fours Lynda Richards, Sheila Rattray, Karen McPhie and Robyn Beaumont v Sheril Johnson, Jean Glover, Bette Saillard and Dale Winter.

Dale’s team started strongly winning the first 2 ends but by the 8th end Robyn’s ladies had hit the front by 8 shots, 11 v 3 and seemed to have taken control of the game.

Heavy rain started at the finish of play on the 12th end causing a stop to play, at this

stage the score was 21 v 4, Robyn’s side had the lead.

Following a team discussion Dale’s team conceded, congratulations to Lynda, Sheila, Karen and Robyn this is their second consecutive year of winning this Championship.

No social bowls were played.

Thursday 26 May: Social bowls played two games of Triples and a game of Fours, all ‘turn around’ meaning all get a chance to play Lead, Second, Third, Skip, 12 ends bowled.

By Tara CAMPBELL CHRIS Lock, who recently represented Myall Masters Swimming Club at the Swimming Australia National Masters competition, is certainly an inspiration to his Myall Masters Swimming peers on many levels.

Chris has been an active member of Myall Masters Swimming Club for nine years.

Prior to this, he was involved in Ryde Masters for ten years as well as being a founding member of the Warringah Masters Swimming Club.

Christine Dunning, Publicity Officer for Myall Master Swimming Club, says that since being affiliated with Myall Masters, Chris has always been a very dedicated and active member of the club.

“Chris has swam competitively at many meets and over the years in his volunteer capacity, he has held the positions of vice president and president as well as assisting with coaching, where he passes on his knowledge and experience to club members to improve their individual skills, technique and fitness.”

Chris’ amazing ability was recently highlighted at the National Masters held at Sydney Olympic Park Pool in April, where he competed in nine individual events and two mixed relay teams over a three-day period.

In the men’s 80-84 age group, Chris placed first in the 25m, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke as well as the 25m butterfly.

He also achieved second in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events.

Chris walked away with five gold and four silver Medals.

Not only did Chris medal in all the nine individual events in which he competed, he also broke two NSW records.

Firstly in the 25m backstroke, and then blitzing his previously held 100m backstroke record, smashing two seconds off his time.

“To achieve such success at 80 years of age

is a true inspiration.

“This, for Chris, was his biggest haul of medals ever at a swimming meet and a definite highlight in his swimming career,” Ms Dunning said.

The Myall Masters were able to recognise and share in Chris’ success with a celebration at Tea Gardens Hotel a few weeks ago.

These days, besides being a dedicated and active member of Myall Masters, Chris is involved in many groups in the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest community.

When not on the golf course or swimming at Jimmys Beach with the mullets he can be found working at Myall Coast Radio, of which he is a founding member and currently president.

“Chris Lock is an outstanding achiever and an inspiration in so many ways,” Ms Dunning concluded.

Gibber to Gibber!

THE Gibber to Gibber Annual Fishing Competition is held each year, with fishing clubs from Bulahdelah, Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens taking turns to host the event.

This year it was Tea Gardens Country Club Fishing Club's turn.

After two years of not being able to hold this event due to Covid-19, all fishers in attendance were pleased to be able to compete again.

Everyone at the presentation was very enthusiastic and enjoyed the weigh-in, BBQ and presentation at Mungo Brush Rotunda.

Our outstanding fisherperson was Vaughan Dorahy from Tea Gardens Club, who weighed in a number of species.

However it was a Mulloway weighing 20.110kgs, almost as long as Vaughan is tall, which led Tea Gardens to win the competition for this year.
