Highway Service Centre Planning Proposal deferred

By Tara CAMPBELL MATTERS referring to the planning proposal of a Bulahdelah Highway Service Centre have been deferred until the new MidCoast Council is elected.

In a recent Council meeting on 24 November, a motion was put forth to adopt the Bulahdelah Highway Service Centre Draft Planning Proposal proposing to build the centre in a 4.4 hectare lot northeast to the Bulahdelah Pacific Highway Interchange.

This motion was amended by Councillor Karen Hutchinson to be deferred until the new Council.

“There seems to be a bit of a groundswell in Bulahdelah regarding this proposal.

“At one stage, the community appeared to be all for this development however I think that most councillors now are being contacted with grave concerns about it,” Cr Hutchinson said.

This amendment was unanimously voted on by all councillors except Cr Roberts and Cr Smith who declared non pecuniary conflicts of interest.

The planning proposal was endorsed for a Gateway Determination by Council in 2018, receiving the NSW Department of Planning Gateway Determination on 11

July 2019 advising that the proposal not proceed for the following reasons: 1. The proposal is inconsistent with the RMS Pacific Highway Service Centre Policy and the Council’s Great Lakes Highway Service Centre Strategy; 2. The proposal is inconsistent with the Hunter Regional Plan 2036, specifically Direction 4 – enhance inter-regional linkages to support economic growth and Direction 20- revitalise existing communities; and 3. The proposal is inconsistent with section 9.1 Direction 5.4 Commercial and Retail Development along the Pacific

Norman chips in for Sanderling Ave development?

“Indications are that interests of various parties involved are being aligned.

“This authority is confirmed in correspondence with GNGCD, and their representatives, not yet released, but is expected to be contracted in the near term.

“Further confirmations are expected to be issued shortly.”

According to a media statement supplied to News Of The Area by Core Leric, the parties involved believe the Sanderling Avenue land has “tremendous potential for transforming the property into a world class golf residence”.

Mr Norman has designed over 100 golf courses across 34 countries.

The Core Leric statement indicates the parties are committed to working with all relevant stakeholders through the DA process to produce a result that is both “beautiful and practical”.

They said the artist's impression of the development which aired on Four Corners was “uninformed”.

Core Leric and GNGCD said the development would not be visible from the beach.

Obeid Inc, the Four Corners program which brought the planned development to a national audience, alleged links between the land’s development and corrupt former politician Eddie Obeid and his family.

Core Leric maintains that the Obeid family are in no way connected to the land or development in question.

In their media statement, Core Leric said the Four Corners program had by suggestion erroneously connected the ownership of the land and local councillor Len Roberts with the Obeid family, causing much hurt and grief within the community.

MidCoast Councillor Len Roberts said he did not know the end goal of the developers when he sold the land in his role as CEO of the KLALC. “At no time did I know who the purchasers were except what was written on the contract.

“They were just names.

“The Golf Club board in 2016 told me that they were not in a financial situation to buy the land and (asked) would the Karuah Land

Council sell it to their joint venture partner who they accepted through an expression of interest process.”

The outrage at the planned development has been clear to see across local social media groups since the release of the Four Corners program, with locals concerned the development would set a precedent for large-scale development in the town.

Based on Mr Norman’s record of golf related developments around the globe, Mr Roberts believes any development undertaken by his company would be “appropriate” for the area.

“There is no DA before Council so I cannot comment on something I have not seen,” Mr Roberts said.

“Council has set the height limit and it must be less than the Benchmark (Cnr Booner and Bennett St, Hawks Nest) at the beach and has the same medium density, not high, zoning.

“The Golf Club carpark and clubhouse have the same zoning,” he said.

“All development proposals must be considered on merit and meet the strategic requirements of the zoning.

“We already have medium density development in Hawks Nest.

“I led the charge at council to refuse one such development very recently at Booner Street, Hawks Nest only for it to be modified and approved by the Land and Environment Court.

“Land in Hawks Nest is either zoned low density residential, medium density residential and small pockets of commercial.

“Some land has an appropriate environmental zoning.”

Having lived in the area for 30 years, Mr Roberts said change is inevitable, but must be managed well.

“I remember the fights over the building of Bi-Lo, Myall Quays, The Grange and the Hermitage, the skatepark, Marine Drive upgrade, the Arts and Craft Centre, the new Library, the obtaining of the Bridge Club land, the placement of pelican spikes on the singing bridge to avoid pelican poop hazards, and most importantly children’s playgrounds.

“I could list more but these things are just examples of change that we needed and have now come to accept as our way of life,” Mr Roberts said.

Kathy Poldmaa and Shane Andrews are administrators of the Hawks Nest Development Facebook group.

Since the airing of the Four Corners episode, the group has swelled in size to include well over 1100 members.

The group’s philosophy is a simple one.

“We support good development that benefits the community and complies with the zoning put in place by the Council.

“Good development will always benefit the community,” Shane said.

Kathy and Shane, and the many thousands signing petitions online, maintain that any large-scale development is inappropriate for the Sanderling Avenue site.

“The land in question at 1 Sanderling Avenue, is sensitive coastal land between the current Golf Club and Hawks Nest beach.

“Large scale developments are unsuitable and inappropriate for this parcel of land, based on environmental and visual impacts.

“This will detract from the natural unspoilt coastal character of Hawks Nest, which is the appeal to both tourists and residents alike.

“I believe this will be the ‘thin edge of the wedge’.”

With the high demand for affordable housing options in the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens area a growing issue, Shane does not believe the development being proposed will effectively meet the need.

“Considering Hawks Nest has a larger percentage of holiday properties than permanent resident properties, I can not see how building a resort-style apartment development will address the ‘residential market needs’ of people wishing to settle and live permanently in Hawks Nest.

“This is not the type of housing development required or wanted to address Hawks Nest’s housing crisis.

“What we need are family houses, not more holiday apartments,” Shane said.

Shane said the land’s zoning was a contentious issue within the community.

MidCoast Council voted to change the zoning from RE1 Public Recreation to R3 Medium Density Residential in April 2021, increasing the maximum permissible height of building on the subject land from 8.5m to 12m, amongst other changes.

“I note the R3 zoning currently is not signed off and is still in contention with the greater community.

“The community are seeking to have this amended at NSW State government level, the R3 zoning will allow overdevelopment of this sensitive coastal land,” Shane said.

By MidCoast Council’s Ordinary Meeting on April 28 2021, when Council voted to rezone the land, Council had received 74 submissions regarding the Planning Proposal for the land adjoining the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Out of the 74 submissions, 65 objected to the proposal, 8 supported the proposal and 1 submission was not relevant to the proposal.

Kathy Poldmaa and Shane Andrews have also now advised the next steps concerned community members can take to have their voices heard regarding the development.

“As well as the change.org petition we also need to send a message to the NSW Parliament, the NSW Government.

“The e-petition to the NSW Parliament asks the Planning Minister to use his powers to change the zoning back to Public Recreation.“If more than 20,000 signatures are obtained the petition must be debated in Parliament.

"If we get a whole lot more the better.

“Any resident of NSW can sign this petition to the Parliament.”

Often when a couple purchase their principal place of residence, they do so as joint tenants. This means they jointly own the whole of the property and when the first of the couple dies, the property passes to the survivor. There is no need for an application for Probate when the first person dies, unless there are other assets held by the deceased which warrant such an application.

However, if it happens that one of the spouses goes into care and a RAD is payable then often it is beneficial to sever the joint tenancy. This means that the principal place of residence continues to be held jointly by the couple. However on the death of the first of the couple, the half interest in the property owned by that person passes under the terms of his or her Will (and no automatically to the surviving joint tenant). By severing the joint tenancy, it removes the risk that if the first of the couple to die is the spouse living in the principal

place of residence (ie not the spouse living in care), that the property does not pass to the survivor in care. The spouse not in care can leave the share of the property to whomever he or she wishes. By leaving the interest in the property to someone else (say the children) the asset base of the surviving spouse in care shall not change and therefore the obligations for payments to the care provider shall not change.

There are important considerations when a person goes into care. One consideration is the possible benefit of severing a joint tenancy. If the joint tenancy is severed, then the Will of the spouse not in care should be changed to provide that his or her share of the property shall not pass to the spouse in care.

Alan Tickle from Taree is running as an independent candidate for the upcoming MidCoast elections after a break from Local Government following the amalgamation.

“In my break I concentrated on leading the community fight for better funding for our local hospital but still retained a passion for Local Government and wished to serve the community again in that capacity,” Alan told News Of The Area.

and any flaws in the accounting practices that lead to a series of errors by staff in the draft presentation of Council’s financial position as of June 30 2021.

“Internal Audit agenda to be reviewed with their role to include control checks on procurement, service delivery and service satisfaction,” he said.

Alan is also a strong believer of unity between all levels of government.

“Notices of Motion should be lodged so that the elected body meets with State and Federal Members on a regular basis.

“While the General Manager might be doing this, it is imperative that a strong relationship is developed across all three levels of Government by the elected body so

that we are better positioned to work with and for our shared communities,” Alan told News Of The Area.

With 45 years across a career in banking and financial planning, includes self-employment with a staff of six, Alan has also completed an Executive Certificate in Local Government and has experience which includes roles as Deputy Mayor, a spot on the Joint Regional Planning Panel, as Deputy Chair of the Board of Mid Coast Water and as Chair of Finance Committee and the Internal Audit committee.

To make a valid vote in this year’s local government election you are able to vote in one of two ways.

Firstly, above the line voting.

Voters can place a number one in the square above the group of candidates for whom they want to vote for.

This means that a vote is cast for that group in the order that they are listed below.

Simply voting with a number one above the line is a valid vote but if you wish, you can then number the other above-the-line boxes consecutively from number two onwards.

The second option for voting is below the line.

Voters can use this option to vote for candidates within a specific group or to choose from a number of candidates in the ballot paper.

To make a valid vote this way, you must place the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the squares below the line which indicate your preferences for the candidates.

You can then choose to vote for additional candidates by placing consecutive numbers beginning with the number 5.

Pre Poll Sites for MidCoast include: Manning United Church, MidCoast Council Gloucester Council Chamber, MidCoast Returning Officer’s Office, Tuncurry Memorial Hall and Tea Gardens District Office.

Concerns over lack of pre-poll options AS election day on 4 December approaches, concerns over the lack of pre-poll voting options have been raised.

Candidates which have been around the pre-poll sites state that Election Officials are concerned over queues on election day.

“Election officials have warned that there are going to be horrendous queues at polling booths on election day with several suggesting that the wait time could be hours,” Claire Pontin, local MidCoast candidate said.

This year the Electoral Commission has opened up pre-poll voting booths for everyone, regardless of whether you have been eligible in the past, encouraging voters to head down to a number of sites before the day to avoid congestion.

At every polling booth, COVID marshals are limiting the number of people that can be inside at any given time as well as ensuring social distancing is maintained in queues.

“The numbers at pre-poll this week have been reported as very slow and I fear that many people may simply give up on large queues, walking away and not casting a vote,” Ms Pontin said.

Concerns have also been raised over the new rules which do not allow candidates or volunteers to hand out ‘how to vote cards’.

AS Local Government Elections approach, News Of The Area is introducing you to the candidates for the Election.

Michael (Mick) Bergin is a Hillville local who is running as an ungrouped independent candidate for MidCoast Council.

He spoke to News Of The Area about his decision to run this term.

“I am running for council because after speaking and listening to many long-time locals, I could not believe how much anger there is towards the current council and how much change the community wants,” Mick said.

Mick believes that through his experience with his own business, he will be able to apply skills to benefit the council if elected.

“I’ve built and managed my own business and I have a lot to offer the local community through my life experiences.

“Honesty and integrity were a large part of operating my business successfully and I feel this is what is needed in Council at this point in time,” Mick said.

Although Mick is running as both an independent and a single candidate, he has faith that the community will support him.

“If elected I will be speaking to as many

local business groups and community groups to find out what is most important to them, taking these thoughts back to discuss council “It’s important to have discussions and to ascertain the pros and cons of all issues and relate these back to the community so as they all can understand any decisions, whether they think they are right or wrong,” Mick said.

Mick believes in transparency and holding the Council accountable for decisions.

“We need to be able to provide transparent facts and figures to the community and in the past, there hasn’t been enough open consultation from Council to the community.

“This is a major factor that I will be endeavouring to change,” he said.

He is aware that not all decisions will be supported by the community, but clear arguments and transparency with decisionmaking will ensure that the community is kept in the loop.

“I am only 56 years young, retired, and am in a position to be able to dedicate a lot of my time to the role of Councillor, and if elected I can assure the local community that I will be doing so,” Mick concluded.

Greens address fishing

By Tara CAMPBELL DURING the campaign for MidCoast Council, the Greens have been talking with local communities about what they need from council.

Through this process the lead candidate for Greens for MidCoast Council, Dheera Smith, met Karl Attenborough, a recreational fisherman popular on YouTube, known for promoting ethical and sustainable fishing and his advocacy to protect the large breeding female Dusky Flathead.

"It's a common misconception that the Greens are anti-fishing.

“The Greens support sustainable recreational

and commercial fishing and are passionate about the conservation of marine areas to increase fish numbers and diversity,” Dheera said.

The establishment of marine conservation zones around the world has been scientifically shown to increase fish stocks by protecting larger fish who are able to breed and have large numbers of young.

"Now more than before, with increased technology, better fishing equipment and more people fishing, there is growing awareness within the recreational fishing community that it's imperative to protect breeding stocks and natural habitat,” Mr Attenborough said.

The Greens understand it is challenging for communities to be told where they can and can't fish but believe education and discussion is key to fish conservation, so that our children can enjoy the diversity of marine areas like earlier generations.

“At the Council level the biggest threat to our waterways, and subsequently fish stocks, is poor water quality from runoff and over-development.

“We want to ensure that development near waterways is discouraged, and if allowed, is carefully regulated and managed to allow for more fish and less development,” Dheera said.

The civic minded group is now looking for new things to do in the community.

By Doug CONNOR THE men of the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed have been busy building animal boxes to help protect a range of endangered species in the region.

“Last year we developed some microbat boxes,” said Bulahdelah Men’s Shed President John Lee. “A member of the community named Christine approached us, asking if we could supply her with some boxes for some endangered animals, which were namely the Native Barn Owl and the Yellow-bellied Glider.”

The Men’s Shed is currently home to ten members, working from their premises on Crawford St, Bulahdelah, behind the War Memorial Hall.

“We took the project on and because we only operate for four hours, once a week, it's been a long project.

“Christine wanted ten owl boxes and we got them finished.

“She picked them up last week and was really happy with them.”

Constable Ash Ray from Bulahdelah Police also purchased an animal box for use at the station, to try and encourage barn owls into the area.

Another local, Suzie, who runs a local vineyard, also bought two for use on her property.

“We are really proud to be doing our bit to help repopulate some native flora and fauna in our area,” said John.

“I am really proud of the

team and everything they are doing.”

John said the Men’s Shed is trying to become more actively involved in the community.

“We are trying to get our name out more into the community, so people can see that we are not just a secret men’s club.

“We are there for the community, to help people.”

John said accessing the Men’s Shed can do wonders for the health of its members.

“We also look after men’s health, which is a significant factor in what the Men’s Shed is all about.

“Men being able to be men and to share the fellowship of other men.

“We use the Men’s Shed for a place where men can really be themselves.

To expand their community offering, the Men’s Shed is seeking a new location to allow for expansion of the group.

“We actually are looking for a new home for the Men’s

John said that safety and access were the main priorities.

“My goal is to provide a safer environment for the men of the shed,” said John.

“At the moment we have no disabled access, and we want a space that everyone can enjoy.”

The Bulahdelah Men’s Shed meets every Wednesday between 10:00 and 2:00pm.

“If there are men within the community that would like to come, we can certainly do our best to fit them,” said John.

Trail not supported

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council’s Great Lakes Walk and Aquatic Trail Project has not been supported by National Parks and Wildlife Services.

The correspondence received from The Hon. Matt Kean, MP Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Environment to Mr Stephen Bromhead, Member for Myall Lakes, stated that National Parks and Wildlife are not able to support the current version of the Great Lakes Walk and Aquatic Trail, a 100km Great Walk along the coast between Forster and Hawks Nest.

Investigating the feasibility of this project was a high priority recommendation contained in the MidCoast Destination Management Plan with councillors writing local members to advocate for the project.

Minister Kean’s response confirmed that NPWS could not support this project for a range of reasons.

These included, “Inflated benefit to cost ratio, inconsistency with the current Myall Lakes National Park Plan of Management,

a range of environmental and Aboriginal cultural impacts, land tenure issues, unvalidated market demand assumptions and requiring more detailed project costs,” Mr Kean said.

Councillors at the 24 November Ordinary Council meeting were left feeling disappointed by this decision.

“I want to express my disappointment that the state government hasn't found fit to even partially fund or give us an expectation that they will look at funding this project in the future.

“This would have been a huge economic boost for the area bringing in people through tourism,” Deputy Lord Mayor Claire Pontin said.

A number of councillors amended the original motion to express this.

“Disappointment which Councillor Pontin has expressed is probably an understatement “Once again we get left out and we’re extremely disappointed but I’m hoping that the new Council takes up the courage and seeks deputation to get

this project fit in,” Cr Len Roberts said.

The initial plan proposed a trail journey between Pacific Palms and Tea Gardens, offering a unique combination of coastal walking and estuary kayaking and was designed to attract partnerships with a range of operators ensuring that various markets could gain access to the right supporting products to enjoy the area.

The Council has expressed its extreme disappointment in regards to the decision not to support the project and has moved that the Great Lakes Walk and Aquatic Trail Project be set down for a further review at a Councillor Workshop on a date prior to May 2022.

Take care – local roads damaged in recent rains WHILE a welcome relief for some, heavy rainfall across parts of the MidCoast region has taken a significant toll on the local transport network.

Motorists are urged to take extra care on damaged roads as Council’s road crews undertake temporary repairs in the worst hit areas.

Along with repairing potholes caused by the recent wet weather, crews have also been clearing debris and removing fallen trees, and will continue to assess the condition of the region’s roads over the coming days.

Council says it’s important for the community to understand that while potholes are a constant problem, filling them is only a temporary fix because reconstructing roads is a much larger operation that

requires long term planning and more importantly, funding.

“This kind of persistent rain over a period of time brings all our work to a halt and when we already have a backlog, it unfortunately sets us back even further,” explained Daniel Park, MidCoast Council’s Manager, Operations North.

“We know some people are upset when they see us patching the road, but this is the best temporary solution to improve safety on our roads in the interim.

“We are aware that the condition of our roads has been heavily impacted by the weather over the last few days, and we’re doing our best to try and make them safe again, first and foremost.

be alert to changing road conditions, slow down, and to observe roadside signage which may be in place to indicate where roads are worst damaged,” he said.

“With one of the largest road networks in NSW we face a significant challenge, but we want the community to know we are aware and we’re doing our best.”

LABOR leader of the Opposition, Anthony Albanese has introduced an amendment to the Fair Work Amendment (Same Job, Same Pay) Bill 2021 designed to stop the inequality that exists in many workplaces across the Australian economy.

Labor say that for many years there has been an injustice in wages for workers with the same job at the same mine, factory, construction site, abattoir, shop or office.

Mr Albanese used the first day of the final two sitting weeks of the year to introduce this amendment, aiming to allow casual workers employed through labour-hire companies to have the same entitlements as those engaged directly by employers.

“Scott Morrison teamed up with One Nation to pass IR changes that extinguish the rights of casual workers in all industries.

“Under the government scheme passed earlier this year, employers can benefit from the certainty of a permanent worker – but they don’t need to give them the benefits of permanent work like sick leave or annual leave,” Mr Albanese said.

The Bill was introduced under the idea that workers who work the same job should get the same pay.

“We have staggering inequality in industries such as nursing, hospitality, mining and construction, just to name a few. “This is a consequence of shonky

Affirmative Consent reforms pass NSW Parliament

REFORMS to simplify sexual consent laws and to ensure more effective prosecutions of sexual offences have passed NSW Parliament this week.

Although no law can ever erase the trauma of sexual assault, members of parliament have listened to calls for change and consulted victim-survivors and legal experts to improve the response to sexual violence.

“I thank victim-survivors, peak bodies, frontline services, legal experts, academics, and those across the criminal justice system for their thorough and thoughtful engagement.

“I commend particularly survivor Saxon Mullins for

her extraordinary bravery in sharing her lived experience and her tireless advocacy for victim-survivors to ensure their voices were heard, all of which has contributed to the passage of these reforms,” Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Mark Speakman said.

The NSW Government’s affirmative consent model sets clearer boundaries for consensual sex, reinforces the basic principle of common decency that consent is a free choice involving mutual and ongoing communication, and reinforces that consent should not be presumed.

“Under our reforms, if you want to engage in sexual activity with someone, then you need to do or say

something to find out if they want to have sex with you too.

“It’s that simple,” Mr Speakman said.

Whilst the Bill is based on legislative drafting suggested as part of the NSW Law Reform Commission Report, it went further by requiring a person to do or say something to find out whether the other person consented, in order to have a reasonable belief that they in fact consented to sex.

“This requirement is not onerous; it does not make consensual sex illegal and t does not stop consensual sex.

“It does not require a written agreement or script, or stifle spontaneity.

“It’s a matter of common sense and respect,” Mr Speakman said.

q NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman said the changes would mean people who engage in sexual activity with others would need to seek consent.

The NSW Government’s reform package also includes: five new jury directions to address common sexual assault misconceptions; research into victim-

survivor experiences with the criminal justice process; and community awareness campaigns that will build on the success of #MakeNoDoubt.

Financial statements to go on public exhibition MIDCOAST Council’s draft financial statements for 202021 will be placed on public exhibition in December.

This follows this week’s meeting of the elected Council, which resolved to resign the statements as part of the NSW Audit Office process.

The NSW Audit office will now finalise the Audit process and prepare their Audit Closing Report.

Following that the annual financial reports will be lodged with the Office of Local Government, and then placed on public exhibition.

The statements report a consolidated net operating result for the year of a $37.077 million surplus.

NSW to ban singleuse plastics

THE New South Wales Parliament has passed a Bill to ban single-use plastics in the state by November 2022.

This decision has been long-awaited since the initial report by the Environment Protection Authority in 2015, and has since been raised by the opposition a number of times in 2017, 2018, most recently, 2019.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington addressed the chamber expressing her frustration in New South Wales being the

“The Scott Morrison Government has made it very clear that banning plastic bags is not a race for them, but for those of us who value our waterways, marine life and our environment, it is,” Ms Washington said.

Australia generates more single use plastics per person than the US or any other country in the world.

Update on further easing of restrictions THE NSW Government has updated the roadmap for easing restrictions after the State reaches the 95 per cent double dose vaccination target or 15 December, whichever comes first.

Adjustments to previous settings scheduled for this milestone include: • Masks will only be required on public transport and planes, at airports, and for indoors front-of-house hospitality staff who are not fully vaccinated (previously all indoors front-of-house hospitality staff regardless of vaccination status).

Masks will be strongly encouraged in settings where you cannot social distance; • No density limits (previously one person per 2sqm); • COVID safety plans will be optional for businesses and will be supported by SafeWork

NSW; • QR check-ins will only be required at high-risk venues including hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, gyms, places of worship, funerals or memorial services, personal services (e.g. hairdressers and beauty salons), limited hospitality settings (including pubs, small bars, registered clubs and nightclubs), and for indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people; and • Proof of vaccination will no longer be required by Public Health Order for most activities (businesses can still require proof at their own discretion).

With more than 92 per cent of people over 16 now vaccinated ahead of the

summer festive season, NSW is continuing to take a responsible and measured approach to reopening.

To maintain high levels of immunity across the community, NSW Health is rolling out a booster vaccination program at its clinics to individuals aged 18 and older who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine six months or more ago.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the easing of restrictions was only possible because NSW is amongst the highest vaccinated populations in the world and the introduction of the booster shot program.

“We’re leading the world when it comes to vaccinations and that is a tremendous achievement we can all be proud of because it has allowed us to return to normal as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Perrottet said.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill

THE Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has passed the Legislative Assembly in the Parliament of NSW. With 167 amendments debated and a number of nights in which the chamber sat until midnight, the vote passed 52 to 32.

The bill was put forward by independent member Alex Greenwich and co-signed by 27 members of NSW Parliament across all political parties.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington strongly advocated the need for voluntary assisted dying.

“As a proud co-sponsor of the bill, I’ll keep working to ensure everyone who’s making end of life decisions,

has a choice of safe, equitable access to palliative care and voluntary assisted dying.

New South Wales is the only state in Australia where voluntary assisted dying is not legal.

Following the vote, Dying with Dignity NSW (DWD NSW) president Penny Hackett addressed the bill.

“This historic result sends a clear and unambiguous message to the Legislative Council that the people of New South Wales want this law passed to give dying people in this state the same rights as other Australians.”

Whilst Ms Hackatt is pleased that the bill has reached this point, she fears that the amendment process will “fundamentally change the nature of the bill in ways

to get out and enjoy summer, providing a boost for some of our hardest industries as we do everything we can to ensure we keep people safe as we learn to live with COVID.” Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the roadmap was a staged and considered approach which ensured Regional NSW was able to welcome back visitors in a COVID safe way.

“Regional NSW is open for business thanks to high vaccination rates right across the state. I’d remind visitors to our beautiful beaches, countryside and outback this summer to be respectful and ensure they are abiding by safety measures, which include wearing masks on public transport, planes and at airports.

Both Premier Dominic Perrottet and Opposition Leader Chris Minns voted against the Bill in the chamber.

The Bill will now be passed over the Upper House to reflect the will of the people of NSW, before it can be passed as law.

Dine and Discover vouchers

THE summer holidays just got even better for New South Wales residents, with two additional $25 Dine & Discover vouchers rolling out for eligible customers from Friday 26 November 2021.

Treasurer Matt Kean said new applicants will receive three Dine NSW and three Discover NSW vouchers, while existing customers will receive one of each.

“The NSW Government’s $250 million expansion of Dine & Discover, announced as part of our $2.8 million economic recovery package, will help our local businesses grow and thrive this summer,” Mr Kean said.

“More than 15,000 businesses and 4.8 million customers have already registered for the Dine & Discover NSW program, with almost $276 million vouchers used so far.

“This is a timely boost for businesses just before the busy Christmas and summer holiday periods,” Mr Ayres said.

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said COVID booster shots would be an important part of keeping the community safe through the summer and new year.

“If you had your second COVID vaccination jab six months or more ago, you should book a booster right now.

“Don't forget, if you haven’t been vaccinated at all, go and get the jab to protect yourself and your family,” Mr Hazzard said.

“By stepping up for a jab and a booster shot

you help protect yourself and everyone around you, including the elderly, those with underlying health conditions and young children who aren’t yet eligible for vaccinations.

“We will also need to continue to get tested if we develop COVID symptoms, regardless of vaccination status, and continue to follow public health advice.”

The NSW Government will continue to review the roadmap settings and make any appropriate changes based on the current case numbers and vaccination rates.

People aged 18 years and older can receive the Pfizer booster dose at least six months after receiving their second dose of any of the COVID-19 vaccines registered for use in Australia.

“Dine & Discover NSW vouchers will start appearing from this week in the Service NSW app with all delivered by early December. Current digital customers do not need to reapply to receive the extra vouchers.

Customers who don’t have access to digital vouchers can opt into a new call and collect delivery method.

School formals open to all HSC students ALL Year 12 students will be able to attend their endof-year school celebration following a year of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard last week granted an exemption to enable all HSC students to attend their

school’s Year 12 formal, dinner, or graduation, regardless of their vaccination status.

“The HSC students of 2021 have had an incredibly tough 18 months, including substantial time without face-to-face teaching, and missing out on seeing friends

and family,” Mr Hazzard said.

“They deserve to be able to party with their friends and enjoy one of the biggest celebrations of their life.”

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the exemption gives all Year 12 students an opportunity to celebrate with their friends

after their exams.

“I am so happy that all Year 12 students can celebrate with each other at the end of an incredibly turbulent year,” Ms Mitchell said.

The game was followed by their break-up Christmas lunch, secret Santa and presentation.

Congratulations to all the winners.

Members of the Board and volunteers have been busy renovating the entrance to the Club over the past few months, and after lunch the ladies posed in front of the newly installed, almost completed water feature.

The work should be finished in time for the four person Ambrose Christmas Party on Saturday 18 December.

Let’s hope for some fine weather before then.

Palm Lakes bowl Medowie Social MEDOWIE Social Restaurant and Bowls 36A, Ferodale Road, Medowie was opened by husbandand-wife team Charlie and Ben Way on 29 January 2021.

On August 5 or just eight months later, Port Stephens was placed into lockdown.

The restaurant/ bowling club officially reopened on 3 November.

Around this time some members of Palm Lake over 55s Resort (PLR) at Tea Gardens discussed having a bowls game and lunch at Medowie Social as both a change of venue for PLR

residents and also a way of stimulating sales for this new great neighbouring restaurant, bar and bowls facility, in both cases after suffering through twelve weeks lockdown.

The concept was promoted at PLR and a significant 45 residents

I feel you’re referring to a residential block as opposed to small versus large acreage.

As my wise mum always said, “every saucepan has its lid.” The reality is that while the quarter acreblock was pretty much the Aussie standard and we do love our ‘room to move’ gardens, over the past few decades subdivision of residential blocks has become common (STCA). I have friends who divided their 1400sqm residential block with a cottage into a 900sqm block with the cottage and a separate 500sqm block with building entitlement, which they sold for a handsome return. With our busy lifestyles; downsizing by empty nesters, and the plethora of out-ofhome activities such as travelling to enjoy, a smaller block presents a wonderful ‘lock and leave’ opportunity that holds enormous appeal to buyers. IT seems that people fall broadly into two camps at Christmas time.

There are the Christmas zealots who post daily updates of their Elf on a Shelf, have all presents wrapped and under the tree by mid-November, annoy their neighbours with their glowing reindeers and epilepsy-inducing lights, and spend hours decorating their festive faux-snow tree covered with enough plastic to choke a bale of turtles (if nothing else, I have now discovered the collective noun for turtles, so this query has been worthwhile).

Then there are those who cut a branch from the most Christmasylooking tree in their yard and plonk it in a bucket of water, make a batch of rumballs, do a last-minute shop that they abandon due to whinging kids, and watch Love Actually so they can cry over the blatant sexism and misogyny, yet still enjoy Hugh Grant's goofy dance moves.

I possibly don't need to clarify which of the two groups I fall into, Laurie.

And I think you do too.

Perhaps this year you could consider a themed Christmas to get you in the mood.

You could, for example, go for a plastic-free Christmas and adorn your tree with dried orange segments, cinnamon sticks and pinecones.

Or maybe a pandemic-themed Christmas with a tree decorated with hand-made coronavirus balls, Deltablue tinsel, and a tinfoil hat instead of a star.

I really think, whatever you do, make it a special day for you, Laurie, and try not to be weighed down by expectation.

THE Hawks Nest Ladies Golf celebrated another successful year at their presentation luncheon and annual meeting held at the golf club last week with over 60 ladies in attendance.

Congratulations go to the Ladies Club Champion and Division one scratch winner for 2021 - Annette Benton.

Annette was also presented with the “Robyn Rumble Memorial” trophy for the best 54 hole nett score over the championship rounds.

Debbie Matheson was the worthy nett winner of

TEA GARDENS COUNTRY CLUB 49 970 250

Division one1.

Championship Division two scratch winner was Carol Maher, with Elsa Jones the eventual nett winner.

Division three championship scratch winner was Janet Moore and Janet Merryweather the nett winner.

Congratulations go to all trophy and medal winners for their sensational results and supporting ladies golf through what proved to be a difficult season, especially with covid causing the disruptions and club closures.

At the preceding Annual Meeting a new committee was elected to once again

ensure 2022 is a successful and enjoyable year for ladies golf.

Elected Ladies President for 2022 is once again Annette Benton, being ably supported by vice president Annie Scott, club captain Kathy Griffiths, vice captain Jo Buttrey, secretary Sue Hair, treasurer Marguerite Miller and committee members Sue Fordy, Deb Dummett and Judy Gilbert.
