BULAHDELAH Central School’s class of 2020 have said their final goodbyes, celebrating their Year 12 graduation last week.

“Well, what a year it's been, with a global pandemic marking the end of our 13 years of schooling,” said departing student Tahlia Read.

“We would like to thank everybody for coming to support us and also to our parents who are supporting us as close as restrictions allow.

“It is now time for us to say goodbye,” she said.

Ms Read praised the school’s teachers and staff for their efforts in supporting students in 2020.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, states that there is no evidence to date that COVID-19 spreads between people swimming within load limits in outdoor and appropriately chlorinated and filtered swimming pools.

However, local pools remain closed to the public.

The MidCoast Council website states, “Several of our facilities are currently closed. This includes…district swimming pools…This is in line with advice from State and Federal Governments.”

So, what is the advice from the Government?

On a NSW State level, the Council is complying with the Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order which came into effect 29 June and was recently updated on 22 October.

In short, it orders that recreation facilities, such as the public pools, require a COVID-19 Safety Plan and at this stage, cannot hold more than 1 person per 4 square metres, excluding staff.

There also must be no crowding in communal facilities such as the toilets, showers and change rooms.

The big issue for the local pools is they have no staff: no lifeguards, no COVID-19 Safety Marshalls and no overarching COVID-19 Safety Plan in place, except for those community swim groups who have done the hard work to put these in place for their members.

Locals have the option of lobbying MidCoast Council to employ staff at the pools to enable access and time for safe exercise and recreational swimming, noting that updates to the Public Health Order remain ongoing and hopefully will improve future access.

Cookie Monster Fundraising Success

Meals on Wheels has since been busy baking for residents in Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar, North Arm Cove, Karuah, Nerong and Bulahdelah.

COOKIES have been baking in homes all across the Myall with around 450 buckets of dough sold to raise funds for the Tea Gardens Public School.

Organised by the school’s Parents and Citizens Committee (P&C), the Gourmet Cookie & Biscuit Dough fundraiser drive was a first and a success.

Like most community groups, P&C fundraising activities have been constrained by COVID-19 and this was an innovative effort that engaged students while raising funds safely online.

In support, the Woody’s Garden Centre purchased ten lots of cookie dough buckets and donated them to the local Meals on Wheels.

Loren from Woody’s told NOTA, “We have been fortunate enough that our business has stayed open during this pandemic and we really appreciate each and every one supporting local businesses.

Watch out for, and support, future school fundraisers.

NATIONAL Water Week builds awareness around the value of water which has never been more important following one of the MidCoast’s driest years on record.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services Rob Scott said, “On the MidCoast we are very fortunate to have a clean and overall reliable source of water that supplies our communities and we continue to work to improve our water accessibility into the future, should we ever go through another drought like we did in 2019.”

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest residents derive their water from an aquifer borefield to the north-west of Tea Gardens which was developed in 1962 and has since been expanded and upgraded several times to meet the growing demands of the community.

Council has also completed an $18 million project to upgrade the Tea Gardens Water Supply Scheme in 2013 to improve quality and to increase security of supply.

Mr Scott continued, “We should all consider how we can rethink our current water practices to help conserve valuable water resources and what we can do as both individuals and communities to inspire a

When reviewing your Will, it is important to consider what happens to your estate if you and your primary beneficiaries all predecease you.

Your Will sets out who receives your estate on your death, but has it covered who receives your estate on your death and the death of your primary beneficiary? So, if you leave everything to your spouse, and he or she dies before you, what happens then?

For example, Lexi and Tom are in a relationship and have three children. In their Wills, they have appointed each other as their executors of each other’s estates on the first to pass away, and they are each the beneficiaries of each other’s estate. On the death of the second, or if they both pass away at the same time, Lexi and Tom have appointed a close friend to be their executor, and their

estate will be distributed to their children on attaining the age of 25 years. If however, Lexi and Tom die together and their three children also die at the same time (and their children do not yet already have children), what happens then in these circumstances, unless the Will makes provision for that possibility, there are no beneficiaries under the Will. A cautious willmaker will include a clause to cover this scenario. We call this a catastrophe clause.

If your Will requires review, it may be wise to consult one of the Estate Planning solicitors at Mullane and Lindsay to review and update your Will, to ensure your estate is distributed the way you want it (and covers all possibilities).

LAST week of October, post footy finals (winners Richmond and Melbourne!), one week to the Melbourne Cup, and an eight week countdown to Christmas, and the Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre has a beautiful range of handcrafted gift ideas all made with the festive season in mind so drop in as it is open every day.

It has been a tough year for retail so keep shopping local for the fabulous Melbourne Cup frock-up and the summer festive season.

Keep eating out local too, as the Myall has a fantastic

range of eateries most with new tantalising menus on offer, so book now for Melbourne Cup lunch on 3 November.

This includes at the Tea Gardens seafood restaurant, Mumm’s on the Myall, who recently made national finalist in two categories (Seafood and Breakfast) in the 2020 Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence.

A big achievement in a challenging year and the winners will be announced on 7 December and foodies from all over wish them well.

Also recently recognised was local photographer Louise Richards who won an

amazing six bronze awards in the landscape category of the annual international photographer awards, Rise International Photography Awards.

Louise’s works are on display at the Hawks Nest Gallery.

To the MidCoast Council who have their next monthly meeting on 28 October with a full agenda, including a very well-supported local proposal to rename the current Winda Woppa Reserve to the “Pat and Randle Pritchard” or “Pritchard Memorial Reserve” in honour of two long-serving workers for the community and the local environment.

Also being tabled is the 180page Midcoast Council Towns & Villages Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Bike Plan.

The Plan identifies a range of local pedestrian access issues, including inadequate and/or poorly linked footpaths, unclear or missing signage, informal car park problems, and “considerable conflict between pedestrian, cycles and traffic” in many popular areas, including the narrow Singing Bridge pathway.

It provides a comprehensive starting point for future projects including supporting applications for funding to

deliver a mobility network to support community needs for walking and cycling.

Back to school where Book Week wrapped up last Friday and Tea Gardens Public School successfully hosted a “Curious Creatures and Wild Minds” theme which included a fantastic dress up by students and teachers.

High School Certificate exams continue this week with Maths, Legal Studies, Biology and Languages all on the timetable students are at the halfway point so keep up the support.

Finally, punters start preparing for the Cup that hopefully starts a city, rather than stopping a nation this year.

VIEW Club first members meet

By Ashley CHRYSLER THE Myall River VIEW Club recently had their first members meeting and picnic since the start of the pandemic, held at Jimmy’s Beach Park.

Cheryl Milburn, Publicity Officer of Myall River VIEW Club, said, “Whilst it was a cool day, there was an aura of being able to connect personally with each other.”

“We were only allowed to have 20 members and each brought their own chair, lunch and drinks.”

“We all had a great time discussing some important issues but also just catching up and socialising since we hadn’t seen anyone in so long.”

Maintaining their 1.5 metre distance, members talked about and decided on the Resolutions – Voice of VIEW, which are submitted to the national office and compiled and assessed for discussion and voting at the VIEW National Convention 2021.

“The Resolutions we thought were most important were domestic and family violence, youth homelessness and effective bullying policies within the school system,” said Ms Milburn.

Barbara Ross, Secretary at Myall River VIEW Club, has drafted a letter with the agreed upon resolutions, rationale, intent or outcome to be shared with the VIEW national office.

The final resolutions will be lobbied with the Federal Government to make changes.

“We also held our committee elections for 2021 and we are pleased to announce that we have a full committee going forward,” Ms Milburn said.

“Depending on the future restrictions and regulations, we hope to hold our next members lunch meeting in November at the Tea Gardens Hotel or in the park again.”

By Doug CONNOR LOUISE Richards’ love affair with photography began when she was handed a polaroid camera by her parents at Christmas aged ten.

Photography has been in Louise’s life ever since.

“My nana always took photos and I loved looking through them, it really inspired me,” said Louise.

Her childhood passion turned into a career, capturing the special moments in people's lives.

“I was a wedding and portrait photographer for about 25 years and about five years ago I moved into landscape and seascape photography. It's my passion. I feel I have found my niche,” she said.

Louise’s recent work has been inspired by the natural beauty of the world around her.

“Mother Nature inspires my work, I love being out in nature witnessing the earth's

“My favourite place to be is on the beach, sand between the toes watching the sun come up over the horizon. “Photography is my oxygen,” Louise said.

Based in Hawks Nest, there is no shortage of amazing landscape scenery from which to take inspiration.

“We live in the most amazing place, I grew up camping at Mungo Brush exploring the beaches, lakes and river.

“My parents, Grandparents and extended families spend every school holiday at the Myall Lakes, and I have such beautiful memories.

“My Late Grandfather even had a shack up on the beach.

“In his retirement he spent six months in his caravan up in the National Park.”

Louise’s work has recently been recognized in The Rise International Photography Awards, receiving six Bronze Awards for photos of the local area.

“My scores were all in the high 70's, nothing under 75 gets an award.

“I got one 79 which was one point off a

Dear Linda, THERE comes a time in many friendships when you wonder whether the level of toxicity being brought into your life is worth it.

I'm trying to think of some of the reasons I've ended friendships over the years.

One was a friend who tried to suffocate me between two beanbags.

One borrowed my car for a few months and returned it in an unrecognisable state.

One employed me for four hours a week, but then burdened me with intimate details of her personal life for at least 15 hours a week.

I worked out I was earning about $3 an hour to be her on-call psychologist.

So, in the scheme of those examples, tea slurping seems pretty minor.

There is a case for tea slurping.

It increases the aroma by making the tea vaporise.

Your friend could actually be a tea connoisseur.

In some cultures, it is also considered polite to slurp tea.

So perhaps your friend is just highly cultured.

Having said that, it is highly irritating.

A bit like those wine connoisseurs who swill their merlot around and then swish it back and forth through the gaps in their teeth like it's mouthwash before spitting it into a spittoon.

Now that is revolting.

Louise’s late brother Paul also lived with the disease, tragically passing away in 2006 aged just 26.

To raise awareness, Louise is selling 2021 calendars, with $1 from each calendar going towards DMD research.

“The calendars feature imagery of our local area and can be purchased from Hawks Nest Gallery or online through my photography website.

“Every bit of awareness we can get out there helps. There is a lot happening in the research world so we never give up hope.”

MIDCOAST waterways have been impacted from the 2019-2020 season of extreme events, with the release of the 2020 Waterways and Catchment Report Card showing a decline in some areas.

“The 2019-2020 monitoring period was one of extreme climatic conditions including drought, bushfires and flooding all of which can have a significant effect on water quality and that was reflected in the results.

“A total of nine sites tested dropped a grade when compared to the previous year with the remaining nine sites maintaining their grade,” said Dr Peter Scanes from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE).

Fire is an intrinsic part of the Australian environment, and often used for ecosystem management.

However the 2019 fires that took place on the MidCoast were extreme and had devastating impacts on our community, wildlife and environment.

"Due to the moderate and heavy rainfall that followed the fires in January and February it is difficult to differentiate the changes in water quality due to the bushfires from the flooding that followed them, but from the results we can see they both had an effect," said Dr Scanes.

Increased levels of algae in our waterways had the biggest impact on the results this year, with 14 of the 18 sites sampled showing an increase in algal levels.

This result indicates there was an increase in nutrient runoff during the rains early in the year, particularly evident in the fire-affected sites of the Manning, Khappinghat and Wallamba, as well as in the Karuah and The Branch Estuaries.

Many sites also saw a reduction in water clarity after the rains.

Half of the tested sites (9) dropped by a grade from the 2018/19 results, the remainder (9) remained at the same grade as 2018/19.

The only location to receive a good (A) grade this year was Myall Lake.

Karuah River and The Branch Estuaries remained at fair (C) grades.

Each year, MidCoast Council partners with scientists from the DPIE to independently assess the health of our waterways as part of the Waterway and Catchment Report Card.

"These results help us keep track of the effectiveness of the many water quality projects we undertake each year with our community and partners," says Council’s Water Quality and Estuary Coordinator, Prue Tucker.

“Waterways are an important part of our region, contributing significantly to our economy and tourism, and providing us with a beautiful natural environment in which we live.

“We’re invested in a waterway health program and in monitoring water quality across our region to protect our important waterway assets.”

This year’s Report Card results were revealed during a free livestreamed event on Thursday 22 October, with over 60 participants joining the event.

When renting or living in a share house it can be difficult to add personal flair to your space if you have any intention of seeing your bond again. Interior design guru Tara Dennis has devised three stylish and easy fixes to make any house feel like home. Meanwhile, it might seem like lockdown has got the best of chef Karen Martini (pictured). Her coffee and pepper-spiced chicken with pineapple and mint salad sounds like the result of a kitchen experiment gone wrong, but Martini assures us they make a surprisingly delicious combo.

For even the most confident chefs, it must be intimidating to walk into the MasterChef kitchen knowing their place in the competition is at stake. For the tiny talents in this junior version, that pressure is alleviated by the entertaining spectacles put on by judges Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong (pictured) and Andy Allen. So far, we’ve seen a giant mystery box and a beehive in the garden, but tonight’s display takes the cake.

The remaining contestants enter the kitchen to find a winter wonderland – complete with falling snow. As Andy explains, their chilly challenge is an ice-cream taste test, followed by a pressure test set by legendary dessert chef Darren Purchese.

Thursday 22nd October: The Final of the Minor Singles and what a contest this was between Sheila Rattray and Jean Glover.

The next 5 ends belonged to Jean, although she didn't manage to get ahead of Sheila's score until the 26th end here Jean was led by 1 shot, 18 v 17.

Successful Hawks Nest Golf Club Ladies Golf Days STORY STARTS on BACK COVER, Page 20

This was followed with the opportunity to implement these on the practise fairway under Andrew’s guidance.

Nervous giggles were replaced with “oohs and aahs” as they managed to connect the golf club and the ball. Encouragement was given by all participants.

Next the ladies were taken in a convoy of golf carts to explore the golf course.

They were impressed with the beautiful surroundings and the peacefulness of the course.

To end the morning the ladies committee provided morning tea and a relaxed question time was held.

This gave the participants the opportunity to organise future golfing activities with other participants, the ladies

committee and Andrew.

We are looking forward to seeing the ladies that took part in the program, and others, on the golf course to continue their involvement with golf.

Charity Golf Day TUESDAY 20 October was the day for the HNGC ladies Charity golf day to support Breast and Ovarian Cancer.

The ladies dressed in pink or teal colours and enjoyed the drop out ambrose team event.

Give Golf A Go ON Monday 19 October the Hawks Nest Golf Club ladies committee held the first Give Golf A Go session.

They were ably assisted

by Andrew McCormack the Professional at the club.

What a success!

The damp weather definitely didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the 19 ladies who participated.

The day began with a friendly, encouraging welcome and chat, followed by tuition on the basics of golf.

Andrew’s clear instructions were followed closely by all the ladies.
