UNUSUALLY cool summer breezes did not chill the atmosphere at Galleries in the Gardens (GIG) Christmas party on Friday night.
The celebrations were twofold, Christmas and the fifth year GIG has been located in their delightful Tea Gardens waterfront cottage.
Emilie Tseronis, GIG President, welcomed artists and members of community organisations to the garden party.

Property Settlement & a Bankrupt Spouse
When you become bankrupt, all assets owned by you vest in the Trustee in Bankruptcy, for the benefit of your creditors. There are exceptions including property that you hold on trust for another person; some household property, tools of trade, life assurance policies, some superannuation entitlements and rights to recover compensation for injury and any compensation recovered.
The Trustee must sell all of the vested property and distribute the proceeds amongst the creditors, or sell sufficient property to pay the creditors and return any remaining money or property to the bankrupt. It can get messy when there is a final breakdown of a marriage or de facto relationship and a non bankrupt spouse claims an interest over the bankrupt’s vested property, or the Trustee claims the non bankrupt spouse is holding property on trust for the bankrupt.
Since 2005 Bankruptcy and
Family Law have interacted with each other in order to resolve complex disputes involving bankrupt spouses. If court proceedings are on foot, then the Trustee can apply to join proceedings, and will stand in the place of the bankrupt. The bankrupt will then become unable to make any submissions to the Court about property vested in the Trustee, except with permission of the Court.
The Courts are empowered to make orders for the adjustment of the bankrupt’s property vested in the trustee. When doing so, the Courts need to attempt to balance the interests of creditors against those of the family and neither the Trustee, nor the non bankrupt spouse has a priority over the other.
If you have a need for advice in such complex matters, our specialist team of Family Lawyers is ready to assist.

Twilight Farmers Market a Great Success
By John SAHYOUN
THE Bulahdelah Christmas Twilight Farmers Market, held at the grounds of the Myall River Holiday Park, welcomed great weather and crowds eager to check out the range of locally produced products.
With a wide variety of stalls offering everything from food, local produce and arts and crafts to name but a few, there was something to appeal to all tastes and interests.
Organiser Dale Bradshaw explained how the event came about.
"The Business Chamber in Bulahdelah decided to help small businesses along coming up to Christmas and we thought a Farmers Market would be a great idea.
“Holding it as a twilight event meant it wouldn't be too hot.
"We put the word out on social media, in the local newspaper and existing markets and got a really good response with about 40 stalls, which is up from last year.
“The crowds are up too so it looks like this market is building quite a reputation,”
said Mr Bradshaw.
"People have actually stopped me in the streets and said how good it is for the town and we are pretty excited about doing another one in the future.”
Mr Bradshaw explained the importance of these types of markets for the local community.
"They're a great communication for the town, people gather, they chat and have a cup of coffee, they bump into friends they haven't seen in ages, do a bit of shopping and support local businesses.
“It's great to get out and about.”

erosion.
A review of the use of the sand transfer system which was designed to pump sand from the stockpile to the beach is still underway.
“Initial indications from this review have shown that the sand transfer system has proven to be effective but it is only one method of renourishing the beach, so we'll go forward using a mix of methods to transfer sand to ensure we protect the road and consequently the homes located on the peninsula,” said Council’s Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott.
Jimmys Beach, located on the Winda Woppa
peninsula at Hawks Nest, is one of fifteen coastal areas formerly referred to by the NSW Government as a coastal erosion ‘hotspot’.
The sand transfer system, which was commissioned in July 2019, was a $4.1 million project funded jointly by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, the Department of Primary Industries Crown Lands and Water and MidCoast Council to trial a solution of using pumps to take sand from a stockpile at the end of the Winda Woppa peninsular to Jimmys Beach.
Following two renourishment campaigns, the operation and cost of the system has been independently reviewed.
“This has shown that sand trucking also remains a viable option, so we will continue to use trucks when appropriate and will choose the most economical method each time we need to replenish the beach,” Mr Scott said.
The sand that is transferred to Jimmys Beach comes from the stockpile at the end of the peninsula that is created by navigational dredging of the nearby Eastern Channel of the Myall River.
“We know the continued dredging of the channel to allow for recreational boating is important to the community and the method we use to transfer the sand to Jimmys Beach has no impact on this.
“The dredging program will continue as
A Cracking Year for Business Chamber
By John SAHYOUN
A STELLAR year has ended for the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism with a dinner to thank the various organisations and businesses that support its ongoing initiatives.
The Chamber has been consistently ranked in the top ten percent of business chambers in the Hunter Region for many years and a runner up at the State Business Awards, meeting challenges that larger areas would be envious of.
The Chamber has also been an active member of the MidCoast Business Chamber,

Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has many diverse interests.
In addition to being a representative organisation for businesses and tourism, the Chamber runs one of the few surviving Rural Transaction Centres in Australia, the local library and the Visitor Information Centre as well in general promotions for the town and many other interests.
Vice President of the Chamber, Kevin Carter told Myall Coast News Of The Area, “It is all about building up our town and making it
a place that people want to visit.
“We believe that our town and the Myall Coast area is one of the best venues on the planet and we actively promote this and given that visitation has improved since the Covid lockdowns.
“It’s full steam ahead,” said Mr Carter.

Active Kids program expanded to include school holiday fun
IT’S set to be a summer to remember for kids with the NSW Government’s Active Kids program extended to include school holiday sports and recreation activities.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said families could now use the $100 Active Kids voucher to enrol their children in eligible school holiday programs, helping ease pressure on family budgets.
“These school holidays will be a summer NSW kids
never forget with hundreds of sports activities to be added to the Active Kids program, so children can get active, have fun and enjoy the outdoors,” Mr Perrottet said.
“So, whether the little ones want to do their favourite sport or try something new, the Active Kids program and NSW Government has got kids covered this summer.”
Treasurer Matt Kean said the Active Kids vouchers would be expanded to include sport and recreation
activities during the school holidays, which are delivered for a minimum of four hours, or over at least five sessions.
“Active Kids has turbocharged sporting participation across NSW, with more than 4.67 million vouchers redeemed, saving families $462 million,” Mr Kean said.
“We’re expanding the program so more kids can get active and more parents can get through the summer school holidays without
breaking the bank.”
Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the Active Kids program is a nationleading NSW initiative delivering enormous benefits for community sporting organisations and clubs across the State.
“The Active Kids program has significantly accelerated sporting participation and pumped unprecedented funding into community sporting organisations and clubs,” Mr Henskens said.
Generous Myall U3A Art Group just keep giving
IN a busy holiday season, the U3A Art Group have, yet again, been busy working to ensure the most vulnerable members of our community know they are not forgotten.
Sonja Ridden, the U3A Art Group Convener said, “For the second year running we have spent several happy hours making cards that were distributed to our local nursing home residents in time for Christmas.
“The idea was originated last year by one of our Art
Group members, Jeanette Hart, and was warmly welcomed by the entire group.
“We embraced this project after having spent the previous two years engaging in fundraising efforts benefitting the education of children in third world countries.
“Giving back in this way, which our Art Group members have wholeheartedly embraced, led us to consider needs that exist closer to
home, thus the idea of helping our nursing home residents feel connected with the community was born.
“We love our community, honour our elders and feel blessed that we are able to be a blessing,” Sonja said.

“There are more than 11,000 Active Kids providers in NSW and with summer sport in full swing, school holidays are the perfect time to register kids in their favourite sport or recreation activity.”
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said families across the State could use the digital voucher in just a few clicks through the Service NSW app.
“NSW families have embraced the Active Kids program, one of more than 70 Government savings to help

LOCAL Government NSW (LGNSW) has released its Election Priorities for the 2023 NSW State Election, which detail the commitments that are required at State level to ensure councils can continue to provide the services their community deserve.
The priorities contained in the document centre on ten key themes that LGNSW is calling on all parties and candidates to commit to in the lead-up to the election.
They are:
• Financial sustainability
• Resilience to natural disasters
• Roads and infrastructure
• Housing and homelessness
• Environment and the circular economy
• Intergovernmental agreement
• Stronger communities
• Rural, regional and community health
• Planning
• Skills and labour shortages
LGNSW President Darriea Turley AM said the NSW State Election was taking place at a critical juncture for local government.
“Local government is a key economic driver for NSW. Councils across NSW employ 55,000 people, look after $177 billion of community assets and most importantly are the beating
heart of the communities they represent,” Cr Turley said.
“But despite the sector’s vital importance, councils are at breaking point due to a myriad of challenges that need urgent attention.
“Our financial model is not fit-for-purpose with a rate cap methodology that is detached from the economic reality. “Meanwhile, years of extreme weather events has caused extensive damage to our road network and infrastructure.
“In addition, a challenging economic outlook is causing tremendous stress on the communities that we serve, leading to cost-of-living pressures and an affordable housing crisis.
“This is all occurring as the ability of councils and communities to determine what development occurs in their own area continues
to diminish.
LGNSW calls for better outcomes for communities this election
“Our Election Priorities detail these challenges while providing a golden opportunity for all sides of politics to finally partner with local government so that together we can deliver the outcomes our communities expect and deserve.
“Crucially, the priorities include measures that are not just critical to our short-term future, but also for the benefit of future generations as we face shifting demographics and a changing climate.
“We look forward to working with all parties and candidates in the lead-up to the March election to ensure these priorities come to fruition.”
Look out for kids near our roads this summer
SLOW down and look out for children during these holidays to help reduce child pedestrian injuries and fatalities across the region.
You’ll soon begin to see signs urging you to ‘Slow Down, Kids Around’.
These signs, around beaches, parks and other busy recreational locations, are there to remind you to be extra careful in your car during holiday time.
MidCoast Council is pleased to support road safety messaging from the Little Blue Dinosaur
Foundation. Michelle and David McLaughlin founded Little Blue Dinosaur after tragically losing their fouryear-old son, Tom in a pedestrian accident on the Central Coast.
A central aim of Little Blue Dinosaur is to help make holiday time safer for children by using visual reminders for drivers and parents.
“Children don’t fully comprehend the dangers on our roads and they are still developing the ability to safely cross the road.
“That means it’s our responsibility as adults to look out for them,” said MidCoast Council’s Road Safety Officer, Chris Dimarco.
Land transport accidents are the leading underlying cause of death in Australia for the one to fourteen age group, according to The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
If you have children in your care, hold their hand when near a road, carpark, or any place where vehicles may approach.
Children have a more limited awareness of the presence of traffic and
the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.
“Holiday time is a busy period for our region,” added Chris.
“With additional traffic around, and both drivers and pedestrians who may be unfamiliar with the area, it’s critical we all take care of our most vulnerable pedestrians – children.”

a bad rap. Vegans are for some akin to the anti-Christ, such is the level of hatred and taunting they receive for making what is often an ethical decision based on being kind to other creatures who have no say in their destiny. Still, your daughter’s approach is a bit in-yourface, and that is part of the issue. Some vegans and vegos happily go about their lives without discussing their choices and others, like the militant vegan, chain themselves to abattoirs and post videos of pigs squealing and chickens being boiled alive, which is a bit unpalatable when you’re sitting down to your Sunday bacon and egg roll.
Another Year Gone
By Marian SAMPSON
AS we bid farewell to 2022 I can’t help but think about the year and the important issues that I have shared with my local community through the NOTA.
I can say with some pride that I write for a growing, sustainable publication which shares local news from Port Stephens to north of the Coffs Coast.
For me the highlight of the year has to be seeing the Green Sea Turtles being released back into the wild by the incredible team at Sea Shelter - Beryl, the last release, literally created a bow wave in her rush to freedom.
However, for me this has created deeper awareness of the problems associated with pollution in our marine environment.
One of the turtles released lost a flipper due to a fishing line tangle.
These creatures are categorised as vulnerable and they are particularly at risk from pollution including fishing line tangles, plastic bags and balloons abandoned in the environment.
In the Myall Coast NOTA, I have written extensively about the local dingo population and I hope that the articles, based strongly on University research and input from ecologists, will help to preserve our five local packs of dingoes and see a change in the way the community views what a dingo is
and what a wild dog is.
In sharing information about this ancient species I hope to break some of the stereotypes and potentially help to change the management of dingoes in our state - something which I have become very passionate about.
The key message for these wonderful animals is “Please Don’t Feed The Dingoes!”.
For those that aren’t aware, the dingoes around Hawks Nest and the Myall Coast need protection, and one of their greatest threats is human interaction.
Again in the animal kingdom, writing about our local koala population and the work of the Port Stephens Koala Hospital has been a rewarding experience.
From the responses to the stories that I have written about these beautiful creatures and the dedicated volunteers that care for those in need, I know their tales have brought joy and hope to our readers.
Writing about citizen scientists and environmental groups like Landcare has also been a wonderful experience.
Of course there have also been stories about politics, and COVID.
The year has also seen the ongoing fight to save vulnerable land from development and sale including the now infamous 109 Foreshore Drive at Salamander Bay and another plot of foreshore land at Anna Bay.
Dear Luke,
YOU know sometimes when I seek solutions I turn to philosophy or case law or a thesis written by a student having an existential crisis, and sometimes I need to look no further than Kermit, who made a very valid point when he sang, ‘It’s not easy being green.’ Despite all the information out there on the benefits to ourselves and our planet when we cut down or even cut out meat, vegetarians get
Our community also came together to fight what it saw as the inappropriate development of a heliport adjacent to the Anna Bay Cemetery - an issue which incensed locals who wish to be able to take time to reflect at the graves of their loved ones in peace.
This issue is now going before the Land and Environment Court.
The community is on notice in relation to the Tomaree Lodge site and sharing the potential future that this site offers as a tourism hub inspires me to remind everyone to get online and have your say - you only have until 6 January to let the powers that be know what you want to see on this site!
The controversial issues that I have written about this year include the incursion on to the public domain by foreshore residents, the Council’s proposed SRV, the proposed development of Bannisters, roaming of goats on environmentally sensitive land at Anna Bay, the now iconic “Anna Bay Eyesore” and the issue of Port Stephens councillors going missing from council action.
I have been privileged to share stories of strength and courage and of our community coming together to support those in need.
To all the amazing charities and for all the wonderful work you do that I have been able to share, it has been an honour to share your work and selflessness - I find the selfless acts of our community’s volunteers humbling.
On a slightly different note, sharing the milestones of the PBL award winners
Dinners must be a rollicking affair at your place, Mr LK. I can imagine your wife bringing her casserole to the table and your daughter warming up her vocal chords before starting a plaintive rendition of Old MacDonald Had a Farm. It is enough to put anyone off their meal. May I suggest you serve fish? Then you will just have to sit there and watch her silently gulping, which, although distracting, is certainly quieter.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
throughout the year is one of the things which I feel is important - not because of the individual acts - but because these awards recognise the good in our youth.
The students who win these awards are not necessarily the fastest or the smartest, but they are the kindest, the most caring and honest and as a parent I know how important awards like these are.
I have connected with local groups and associations like Probus, the CWA, the RSL sub-Branches, Emergency Services, Rotary, Lions Clubs, schools, arts, sporting groups and more - there are simply too many to name.
All of these connections have been an enriching experience.
All of these groups provide wonderful benefits to our community; from keeping us safe to keeping us connected, the spirit of our local community is strong.
I would like to also thank all the contributors that share ideas, stories and images for the reading pleasure of our community.
I have shared the highs and the lowsand while not everyone will agree with all of the stories that the NOTA has shared, I have faith in the process and balance which the NOTA brings to local issues.
My message to family and friends and community for the holiday season is to stay safe, be happy, tell those who matter to you that you love them and take the time to stop and smell the roses.
- An end of year message
By Jewell DRURY.
THURSDAY October 6 2016 saw the official launch of News Of The Area in the Bay, and I was very honoured to be one of the original reporters for the newspaper.
Since those humble beginnings I have seen the News Of The Area increase in size and popularity.
Our newspaper is like no other, with a love of our Port Stephens community and a heart to share the lives and legacy of so many amazing people.
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of our readers and have been truly touched by your kindness, love and community spirit.
I love writing your stories, as I try to share the heart behind your determination, strength, goals and commitment to build and support our community, thank you for being you.
I have lived on the Tomaree Peninsula for more than 26 years, raising my eight children here in our beautiful blue water wonderland.
I love that our newspaper was born out
NOTA reporter Jewell Drury
of the passionate hearts of local couple Mick and Rochelle Wright, who live in Port Stephens with their three beautiful children.
Locally owned and operated with local reporters, each of us passionate about bringing to you a balanced and informative community newspaper, sharing the highs and lows of each other's lives, as we support one another throughout the year.
I would like to leave you all with a blessing for Christmas and for the coming year.
"May the Lord bless you and keep you, make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May he turn his face toward you and give you peace.
May his favour be upon you and a thousand generations and your family and your children and their children and their children.
May his presence go before you and behind you and beside you, all around you and within you, and may he keep us all safe until we meet again."
By John SAHYOUN
QUITE out of the blue the publisher contacts me and asks if I’d be interested in reporting for Myall Coast News Of The Area.
It’s been a number of years since I’d last been involved in print journalism so I was a bit hesitant at first but I thought it would be a great opportunity to inform the public on what is going on in our area.
I was contacted by the editor and would you believe it I was on a train at the time returning from Sydney where I was attending an award presentation for being published in an anthology.
In recent years besides a couple of short stories I’ve been involved mainly in academic writing and business papers which are totally different to weekly news stories but there was a challenge there.
Sometimes it is the backstory which is
interesting and never sees the light of day.
“I love writing your stories” My return to print journalism - John Sayhoun
Recently I had got up at the crack of dawn to finish off a couple of stories and while I was working away the power unit of my computer went snap, crackle and pop and I was left looking at a blank screen.
My response is of course unprintable!
With the deadline fast approaching and the editor wanting something for this week's paper it was a matter of firing up another computer and getting it going and rapidly putting something together.
It turned out all good.
To pick out my favourite story in the past few weeks is like picking out your favoured child in your family.
I’ve been fortunate in that I’m involved with many community organisations so there have been many great yarns that I’ve looked at.
I want to say that all of them are my favourites as every story is worth telling.
I would encourage all of you who have something to tell to consider joining our team and sharing the items that are newsworthy in our area.

READING by Lynne Miles: Luke 2: 8 - 11 "There were shepherds in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night. An angel of the LORD suddenly appeared before them and the glory of the LORD shone all around them and they were afraid. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid for I bring good tidings of great joy which will be for all people. Today in the city of David, a Saviour has been born for you, who is Christ the LORD.""

Keeping safe on our waterways
By Marian SAMPSON
SUMMER is the time that Australians get out onto the water and in holiday locations like ours there is plenty to explore and enjoy.
However for many boaters this is a once a year activity and it is important to be safe while enjoying the good life.
Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage is urging boaters to be prepared and to Log On with their local Marine Rescue base before hitting the water over the holidays.
Commander David Aselford said that while the bulk of their callouts were to assist boaters with generally minor engine, battery or fuel problems, escalation into a serious emergency can happen very quickly.
"While a vehicle breakdown on the side of a road can be frustrating, a bad boating situation can quickly get worse and could mean the difference between life and death,” Mr Aselford said.
“What we see regularly is a situation where someone hasn't used their boat for a long time and then go out
without making the proper checks first.
"The boat starts and you head out fishing for the day, with everything okay.
“But when you want to come back in, the engine won't start or the outboard motor falls off.
“This is where the situation can quickly escalate.
“When one thing goes wrong, it all starts going wrong.”
Checking the simple things such as changing the fuel, oil and oil filter, checking the engine, gearbox and propeller, charging the battery, testing the electronics and making sure you have the required safety equipment can mean the
difference between a safe and enjoyable day on the water and a potentially lifethreatening situation.
“Carrying all the safety gear including everyone wearing a life jacket increases your chances of survival in any incident.”
Boaters are also being urged to check the weather prior to launching their boat.
Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage does regular local weather forecasts supplied by the Bureau of Meteorology, and is able to supply additional weather information upon request.
"Water users are also reminded in an emergency, every second counts.
“Boaters should log on with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16, 27 Mhz Channel 88 or the Marine Rescue App before heading out.
“The Marine Rescue App is suitable for iPhone and Android users and is simple to use but you can also call the base on 02 4982 4981 to log on and log off if required.
“The service is free to all users,” Mr Aselford added.
“Marine Rescue volunteers will watch out for your safe return and if you don't log off as planned, start
New rent bidding rules now in place
NEW rent bidding regulations came into place on Saturday December 17, banning the practice of solicited rent bidding.
.
Minister for Fair Trade Victor Dominello said reforms to regulations under the Property and Stock Agents Regulation announced earlier this week required real estate agents to advertise a rental
property with a fixed price –not with a price range or “by negotiation”.
Real estate agents are now prohibited from inviting, suggesting or inducing a prospective tenant to offer an amount higher than the advertised rent for the property.
“No longer will tenants waste countless hours
applying for rental properties they think they can afford only to be told to increase their offer to improve their prospects,” Mr Dominello said.
“I encourage real estate agents to familiarise themselves with the new regulations and ensure they comply with them in their dealings with renters.”
Safe Boating This Holiday Season
By Marian SAMPSON
HISTORY tells us that Marine Rescue volunteers are about to be in for a busy time as holiday makers dust off their boats and hit the bays, beaches, rivers and lakes of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast region.
Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Lemon Tree Passage volunteers are ready for a surge of boaters heading on to local waterways over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, with Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage Unit Commander David
Aselford appealing to boaters to make safety their highest priority and take extra care on the water.
David Aselford told News Of The Area, “While it’s been a busy start to the boating season, our volunteers are well prepared for an expected influx of boaters over what is traditionally the busiest week of the year on our waterways.
“We want everyone to have a great time on the water - and most importantly, to return home safely.”
“Over the Christmas and New Year break it’s more important than ever to make
sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and that you Log On with Marine Rescue NSW on VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue NSW app.
“This free service gives you the peace of mind of knowing our volunteers are watching out for your safe return and that if you don’t Log Off as planned, they will start searching for you.”
Marine Rescue Port Stephens Unit Commander Ben van der Wijngaart said it was concerning that many of the rescue missions launched since the start of the boating
Those who breach the new regulations may be issued an on-the-spot penalty infringement notice of $1,100 for a corporation and $550 for an individual.
The maximum penalties a court can award for noncompliance with the ban on solicited rent bidding are $11,000 for a corporation and $550 for an individual.
season could have been avoided if boaters had taken simple safety precautions.
“Of the rescue operations carried out across the state over the past year, 40.4 percent have been due to engine failure, ten percent a flat battery and nine percent in response to boats out of fuel,” Mr van der Wijngaart added.
“These can easily be prevented by checking your engine and battery are in good condition and that your fuel tank is full before heading out.”
He said large numbers of boaters on the water over the Christmas/New Year period made collisions more likely and urged boaters to slow down, stay vigilant, and take it easy on the water.
With summer often
“NSW Fair Trading will work with real estate agents to make sure they understand the new regulations” Mr Dominello said.
“While the initial focus of NSW Fair Trading is on educating the industry, there will also be regular compliance campaigns and strict enforcement action.
“Anyone who believes
searching for you.
“Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage is operational from 6am to 6pm daily, and available after hours for call outs.”
The team at Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage hope everyone has a safe time on the water over the busy Christmas and summer holiday season.
they have been asked by a real estate agent to increase their offer is encouraged to contact NSW Fair Trading.”

coming with strong sea breezes and notorious southerly busters, Mr van der Wijngaart added that Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Lemon Tree Passage crews were often called to help boaters who had misjudged weather and sea conditions.
“Check weather and sea
conditions before heading out and regularly throughout the day as conditions can change quickly.
“You can get up-to-date forecasts from your local Marine Rescue base by calling on VHF Channel 16 at any time or on the Marine Rescue NSW app.”
Sally Whitelaw completes hospital traineeship
ON THURSDAY 8 December
Manning Base Hospital Taree held a celebration to recognise the completion of their school-based traineeships for Indigenous students.
This program runs in partnership with Hunter New England Health and the Aboriginal Health Unit, and trainees have completed seven hundred hours of work experience at the hospital over a two-year period.
This year there were two students recognised for their involvement and

completion of the program; Darcie Maddalena from Wingham High School and Sally Whitelaw from Bulahdelah Central School.
“During the numerous speeches given at the ceremony Sally was singled out and complimented on her tremendous work ethic and praised for the quality of her contributions to the various departments at the hospital,“ said MichelleLeigh Gray, Aboriginal Education Coordinator at BCS.
“She was offered and accepted a casual position at
Manning Base starting in the new year and is planning to keep exploring her options working in the healthcare system.”
Sally’s journey has inspired two other BCS students who are now planning to apply to take part in this program in 2023.
“Many members of the community expressed their gratitude that a program such as this one is offering Aboriginal students the opportunity to make such positive contributions to the community as a whole,” said Michelle.

FRIDAY ISLE OF DOGS
7FLIX, 5.15pm
Say this comedy’s title quickly enough and you’ll hear the adorable hidden meaning behind Wes Anderson’s canine caper: “I love dogs”. The stylish affair follows 12-year-old Atari (voice of Koyu Rankin) and his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), who have been separated after an outbreak of dog flu, saw the mayor deport all dogs to an island of landfill. This quickly gives way to a heartfelt tale as Atari teams up with five pups (Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Bob Balaban and Bill Murray) to scour the island for his friend.
So you stayed up past your bedtime and overindulged on New Year’s Eve? Whether you’re tired, headachy or run down after the season’s festivities, this special British treat is a side-splitting way to welcome in the New Year and unwind. It’s a festive stalwart that has tickled audiences’ funny bones for almost 20 years, with it’s pub-style quiz format a laid-back antidote to the hectic time of year. Acidic host, comedian Jimmy Carr (right), is a pro at baiting his guests. This time, Jonathan Ross, Rose Matafeo, Katherine Ryan, Stephen Merchant, Richard Ayoade and Maisie Adam are behind the buzzers to see who has the best memory about the events of 2022.

Tips to keep pets happy and healthy this holiday season
RSPCA NSW encourages pet owners to keep the welfare of their furry friends front of mind this festive season.
The holidays are a
wonderful time to spend with family and friends, but for our pets, it can be a stressful time of change.
If you decorated your
home with festive cheer, try to keep baubles and tinsel out of reach of your pets as they can pose a risk to their health if ingested.

Flashing or shiny ornaments can be mistaken by pets as fun new toys, so please be mindful of where decorations are placed.
Avoid having candy canes or chocolate on display and securely attach larger decorations, such as Christmas trees, to the wall to prevent them from tipping over and injuring your pet.
Exercise your pet before any guests arrive to help prevent any anxiety.
Also ensure that your
pets have a calm and quiet spot to go to away from the noise, complete with their own water and food source.
This advice also applies to fireworks displays as animals can be injured by trying to flee from the loud noises.
Stay at home with your pet if you can and before the fireworks do some training, play or exercise, as an animal that has had its needs for enrichment
