By Doug CONNOR 77 YEARS ago, Jim Clayton travelled to England on the RMS Queen Elizabeth to fight with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in World War Two. Jim served his country with distinction as a Wireless Operator in a Lancaster Bomber.

“I did a tour of 30 trips over Germany and France,” Jim said.

Jim was 21, and arrived ready for operations in Methweld, Norfolk, in 1944 after 14 months of RAAF training in Australia and England.

Prior to joining the Air Force, Jim spent time with the army.

“When I turned 18, I walked 100 yards up the road to the RAAF recruiting

“I was then in the Army for about 4 or 5 months and I thought the Air Force had forgotten about me, so I joined the Australian Infantry Forces, and volunteered to travel overseas.

“I trained up at Toowoomba, up and down the downs for a month, then I got called out of ranks one morning and the captain told me ‘The air force wants you Clayton’.”

His time in the army had given Jim some of the skills required to become a Wireless Operator.

“Because I had done signalling, a little morse code and knew a little about the wireless, I thought I’d become a wireless operator.

“Not knowing I would do 8 months of bloody wireless theory which just about killed me.”

Jim’s experience ramped up in 1944 when he began undertaking bombing operations

over Germany and France.

“The first operation was an interesting one.

“We were told to go with 100 percent effort.

“40 Lancasters, all taking off one after the other, at 6pm at night, taking off to bomb someone.

“The whole station came off to see us off.

“Can you imagine the noise of 40 Lancasters?” Jim said.

As he undertook more operations, Jim said his fear began to dissipate.

“I was never terrified, I was apprehensive for a bit, but after the first five trips it became part of your make up.”

Jim said the experience in World War Two, made him “get used to death”.

“I was one of the lucky ones,” Jim said.

“The other three chaps I trained with, Johnny, Alf and Merv were all killed.

“I was the only bloke who came home.”

Jim recalls one harrowing night, when a neighbouring crew were embarking on what was meant to be their final operation before completing their service.

“I used to go drinking with one of the

engineers and knew him well, and his crew were on their last trip.

“This night, his crew were going out on their last operation.

“They were all killed on the last trip, the poor bastards.”

Upon return to Australia, Jim joined the wool buying firm with whom his father had spent 50 years.

Ten years later, he became director of the firm.

He then owned his own company for 28 years, before taking a top job with a Japanese wool buying firm.

Jim retired at 62, living for a time in Mallabula before moving to North Arm Cove.

Jim, who has just turned 98, was awarded the French Legion of Honour medal in 2015.

“The President of France wrote to me wanting to know how many trips I had done over France.

“So I got out my log book and wrote back, and they told me I was to be awarded the Legion of Honour.

“I have campaign medals, but this one is very special,” Jim said.

The standard Enduring Power of Attorney ("EPOA") provides that it is effective immediately after it is signed by both the appointor and the appointed attorney.

However, it is open to the appointor to provide that the Enduring Power of Attorney only becomes effective after a specified event. That may be, for example, if the appointor is no longer competent to make his or her own decisions.

If so, then a clause can be added to the EPOA providing that the EPOA becomes effective after the treating General Practitioner of the appointor, for the time being, states in writing that the appointor can no longer manage his or her own affairs. Further,

an EPOA can include certain conditions or restrictions. For example, it can provide that under no circumstances can the attorney sell the appointor's home. It can be further qualified to provide that the home can only be sold if money is required to be raised to pay for aged care. These are simple examples, however, if the appointor feels strongly about a particular matter or matters then the EPOA can be modified to allay those concerns.

When giving instructions for an EPOA, your lawyer can advise you as to the benefits or otherwise of including conditions.

There are currently approximately 2500 ADF personnel deployed on operations and activities, both abroad and domestically, including ADF personnel assisting with disaster relief efforts or supporting the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We also remember and thank the families and communities who love, trust and enable our people to remain resolute in service— this too is part of the Anzac Spirit,” General Campbell said.

“Lest we forget.”

Development facing community pushback

COMMUNITY members with concerns about a potential development on the corner of Booner and Yamba streets, Hawks Nest, had a significant win last week.

The proposed development application (DA), which consists of 29 units across three blocks, was due to go before the Land and Environment Court on 4-6 May, however the hearing has been postponed at the request of the developer on the basis that they will be

preparing a revised proposal for the site and need time to prepare amended plans.

Council rejected the DA when originally lodged in 2019, receiving more than 40 submissions from the community.

The hearing’s postponement comes after a meeting of more than 40 concerned residents was held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on Tuesday April 13.

Following that meeting, group representative Shane Andrews received 200 letters of support against

the development, which were presented to Council’s lawyers.

Mr Andrews said that the height of the proposed building was a major community concern.

“The community concerns echo the Council’s concerns which are mainly bulk and scale,” he said.

“Hawks Nest generally has a three story, or 12 metre limit on developments.

“They want to build four stories on there, which takes it higher than that limit.”

“If a building of this scale gets out on there, that will be a precedent for all the other blocks and we will end up with something that looks like the Westfield shopping centre.

“The high density nature of the building, doesn’t meet the natural character and feel of Hawks Nest, it doesn’t meet that criteria either.”

The potential for increased traffic congestion has also been raised as a community impact.

“It is 29 units, on three normal house blocks.

“This equates to 72 bedrooms and 56 underground car parking spaces,” Mr Andrews said.

“That’s potentially an additional 120-140 people.

“They will exit onto Yamba St, which will cause traffic at the T-intersection at the shops.

Mr Andrews said his group are not against development in Hawks Nest, but wish to see the area developed in a way that meets community needs.

“For the community to grow, we need permanent residents,” he said.

“No one in the community is against development in Hawks Nest, but we want to see it tailored to what the

New Police Recruits for the Hunter SEVENTEEN new probationary constables will commence duties in Hunter Police Districts after they attested at an attestation ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the newest recruits in Goulburn.

“Police officers perform a crucial role in protecting the community. As the

probationary constables of Class 346 step into their law enforcement duties they can know that they have the full support of this government,” Mr Elliott said.

“I commend their choice to pursue a career in policing, where they will serve the community and keep this state safe.”

The NSW Government announced it was investing $583 million to introduce 1500 extra police over four

years to enhance community safety across NSW. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin welcomed the new police officers to the Port Stephens-Hunter, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle City and Hunter Valley Police Districts.

“Some of the Force’s newest probationary constables have elected to come back to serve this community while others

have chosen to start their careers in the Hunter district,” Mr Martin said.

“On behalf of our community, I am pleased to be able to welcome our newest police officers.”

Class 346 includes 149 men and 55 women.

Some recruits entered the NSW Police Academy straight from school or university, while others left established professional careers and trades.

Twenty-two recruits were born overseas in countries including Pakistan, Syria and Colombia. Many are from non-English speaking backgrounds, with seven recruits fluent in a second language including Punjabi, Hungarian and Spanish.

Grant Funding Available KATE Washington MP is encouraging local community groups, P&Cs, sporting clubs, and other not-for-profit groups to apply for the annual Community Building Partnership (CBP) grants program.

CBP grant funding can be used for building or renovation projects, or to purchase equipment.

Given the impact of COVID-19 on local not-for-profit organisations, Ms Washington is encouraging community groups to apply for funding to kick-start their re-openings and enable services and events to resume.

“Local groups have many wonderful plans and this funding can see projects become reality,” Ms Washington said.

“Previous grants have been used to kick start the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, the Hawks Nest Bridge Club, Tilligerry Scout’s hall getting solar and batteries, the Wirreanda Public School yarning circle, and an upgrade to Seaham Park.”

“I know how difficult it has been for groups to raise money over the past year, so this grant funding could help kick start the projects people have been thinking about during lockdown.”

Applications are open until 14 May 2021, with successful projects announced in November 2021. Further details can be found at www.nsw.gov.au/CBP.

To facilitate this, all MidCoast Libraries will be closed for one day – Monday 3 May – to allow all Library employees to attend a staff development day.

Throughout May and June, Stroud Library will host Preschool Storytime, which features stories, songs and craft for preschool aged children (3-5 years) during school term time.

LITTLE Street Libraries have been popping up around Australia rapidly in the past twelve months.

Australia’s first Little Street Library was created in 2015 and now, in New South Wales alone, there are over 1278 street libraries presented in many ways.

From fridges to TV Cabinets, book shelves and many other homemade creations, street libraries are occurring more frequently.

Street Libraries are a mini collection of books centred around the concept of ‘leave a book, take a book’.

They are entirely free and there are no cards or fees for late returns.

In the past twelve months, many residents have created their own street libraries to unite the community in a time where many could not visit a library.

Many members of the public are always on the lookout for little street libraries in the area.

The owner of North Arm Cove’s street library wrote on their library bio, “I’m a great believer in minimising unnecessary waste and therefore in recycling, and this includes books.

“This is the first Street Library located in the small village of North Arm Cove where

quite a high proportion of the residents spend a lot of their time reading.”

By Lynda RICHARDS ON Tuesday 20 April: Social bowls played 2 games of 3 bowls.

Triples 18 ends and a game of Fours 18 ends.

The Fours game was evenly matched on the 13th end, they were 10 all then Lyn Nightingale, Bev Rhodes, Jill McBride and Robyn Beaumont won the 14th end by 1 shot.

Unfortunately that was the last end they won.

Sheril Johnson, Bette Saillard, Ingrid Luck and Robyn Webster were the victors here winning by 4 shots 15 v 11.

A good "come back" by Pam Gilchrist, Judi Polak and Dot Dallas who were down by 5 shots on the 11th end v Sue Morris, Wendy Jones and Jeanette Emmett.

They had narrowed the gap to just 2 shots by the 15th end ultimately losing by 3 shots, Jeanette's team winning 13 v 10.

Sheila Rattray, Dawn May and Karen McPhie led all the way against Lynda Richards, Deyonne Page and Dale Winter on the 14th end they held a lead of 5 shots by the

finish this tally was reduced by 3.

They were the winners 15 v 12.

The winners on the day winning with the lowest margin were Sheila, Dawn and Karen. "Lucky by name, lucky by nature" Ingrid Luck was the raffle winner, many thanks to The Garden Eatery for their donation of the raffle prize.

Thursday 22 April: Social bowls, plus the Semi Final and Final of NDWBA Triples Championship.

Format for social bowls 3 games of Triples 12 ends the selectors decided to give some "less experienced" bowlers a go at being Skip.

Loretta Baker, Irene Roberts and Judi Polak on the 9th end held a lead of 10 shots (13 v3).

The next 4 ends belonged to Dot Dallas, Sheila Rattray and Jean Glover scoring a 3 then a 5,1 and a 1, resulting in a drawn game 13 all.

Sue Morris, Julie Kennedy and Jill McBride started strongly against Wilma Drake, Bev Dunn and Bette Saillard, a 6 shot lead on the 8th end, but winning by just 1 point 12 v 11.

For those who are more green than green-thumbed when it comes to gardening, starting out can be a challenge. But if you want to see the potential payoff that this particular investment can bring, look no further than tonight’s episode of Gardening Australia. In Sydney’s Lavender Bay parklands, host Costa Georgiadis returns to the garden of Wendy Whiteley. After moving into her home with her artist husband, the late Brett Whiteley, in 1970 she set about transforming the disused railway site below into a living artwork. Wendy is the first to admit she had no idea what she was doing at first, but 50 years on, it’s an incredible public space.

If any program should take the gong as Australia’s most cheerful and fun TV show, this is it.

This does not detract from the horrors of war and what our returned service personnel had to endure within the constraints of conflict by any means.

However, things occur in peace time as well that are overlooked by certain departments, including the Prime Minister via his address to the nation.

Many physical injuries and Mental health issues are suffered by those of us who never saw active service yet trained in exactly the same way as those who did.

Within my Time in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, bastardisation was a part of the training at both Kapooka and your Corps training School, even within your unit of posting.

For some, it made you a better soldier, for others it affected you mentally and physically.

The governments of the day spent Thousands and thousands of dollars training you to be a killer, and the motto was “Kill or Be Killed”.

This was instilled into you throughout your military career, whether long or short.

When it came time for you to discharge your duty and return to “Civilian Life” you were shunted out the door without so much as a handshake or a thank you for your service.

So Mr Prime Minister, even though I welcome the decision on a Royal Commission I found your address to the country on this issue out of touch with the greater Defence community both serving

Dear Kate, I RARELY have this problem because I avoid large social gatherings like the plague (now there's a slightly outdated simile/cliche for you).

And maybe that is why I avoid them, because I can't help but overthink everything. I'd much prefer to dine out with a small group of friends.

I do, however, understand your dilemma, because I have been in this situation myself, quite recently in fact, for a 50th.

It seems strange to me that it is socially acceptable to drink so many strawberry daiquiri slushies that you have to hold onto a post, or to flirt outrageously with the man slicing bits of pig off a spit (dexterous, strong forearms, good in a vegetable shortage), and yet it is not okay to just slink out of a party without having the same dreary conversations you've had an hour earlier (yes, you did tell me that Luke got into a medical degree at Sydney Uni, but thanks for reminding me that our children were commando crawling at the same age, but now my kid is backpacking with a sound bowl, a book of inspirational quotes and a smudging device -- none of which he knows how to use).

Or you have to endure yet another round of definitely-not-bloody-Covidsafe social gaffes where people you have met only hours earlier feel perfectly entitled to hug you so tightly that there is danger of breaking a rib or else kiss you on the lips with their beer-froth hipster moustaches (never trust a man with too much facial hair).

I think if you simply say goodbye to the hosts and also that guy who said he'd fix your faulty wiring for free (assuming this wasn't a euphemism), then you've done your duty as a guest, and it is time to get the hell out of there before things get really messy.

Southern Area Reference Group and Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association meet

THE Southern Area Reference Group was able to meet in April and again a number of topics were discussed.

Representatives from Pindimar, North Arm Cove, Winda Woppa were present as well as members of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association and the Myall River Action Group.

Apologies were received from Lions Club and Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce.

It was noted that the area is receiving a marked

increase in visitor numbers and a growing number of permanent residents, resulting from the Covid restrictions.

In view of this the Ref Group emphasised the need for Council to address major, outstanding issues as a matter of priority.

These included better signage throughout the communities, the installation of a public car park in Myall Street, line markings for car spaces between Maxwell and Ogden Streets along Marine Drive and repairs to the Moira Parade boat ramp.

Pindimar have requested attention be given to tree management

on Pindimar Road and bird deterrents on the Singing Bridge need replacement.

The bird viewing platform at Winda Woppa needs replacement, however this will likely need a Government grant.

The request for warning lights at the junction of Myall Way and the highway is still with Transport NSW and we must wonder why a simple question regarding safety issues can take so long to resolve.

Among new items, the success of the Myall Coast Radio has been gathering pace and there are new programs of special interest for our community.

The proposed boat launching ramp in Tea

Gardens has progressed where the boating community have provided Council with ideas and recommendations for the new construction.

Council will consider the proposals and subsequently request tenders.

It is hoped the project will be completed by the end of the year.

The Hawks Nest -Tea Gardens Progress Association committee met to discuss several major issues impacting the community, the first being the use of the public pool in Tea Gardens.

The closure of the pool due Covid restrictions has been viewed by many as unnecessary and an adverse reflection on Council, who while denying public use, have allowed certain groups access.

To many, it rankles with apparent favouritism and the facts need to be sorted and tabled. The pool has now closed for the winter recess and the PA will form a sub-committee to establish those facts and disclose them to the community before next season.

Another major issue is the Council initiative of the Pedestrian and Mobility Plan (PAMP), where the community was asked to submit their preferences on improvements within the Council area.

Those submissions have now been collated and a presentation will be made to the Council Meeting Wed 5 May. Other items to be presented at that meeting will be the development proposal for apartments in Sanderling Avenue, Hawks

Nest, and the one-way traffic for wheeled traffic using the footpaths on the Singing Bridge.

The recent flood waters are beginning to abate and some sections within the Myall National Park are being reopened, however we understand the Bombah ferry is not operating and the major camping areas will remain closed until September.

The Progress Association will be able to conduct the May meeting and have asked Kirk Dahle of Dept Fisheries to address members and interested parties on the success of the experimental oyster reefs and the recent doubling of their size.

It will be interesting to learn the commercial impact on our oyster farmers as well as the environmental improvements oysters provide to the health of the river.

Floodwaters over Mungo Brush road are beginning to abate and sections within the Myall National Park are being reopened.

Big week of bowls 21 APRIL Two-bowl Triples continued today in a howling south-westerly wind testing the skills of the 49 hardy souls that played.

The Club welcomed a new player, Tony Butler.

The wind held no fears for the winners, Merv Mills, Dave Garcia/Keith Smith and Mark Nightingale.

They won on a countback with 24 points.

The lucky losers, on 19 points, were Dennis Wilberforce, Bill Whalan and Geoffrey Muggleton.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Peter Cheney.

I hear he is inviting his mates!

District Pennants was played today with both Grade 4 and Grade 7 playing at home.

Grade 5 enjoyed a bye and Grade 6 played away at Soldiers Point.

Grade 4 continued their unbeaten run defeating yet another one of the big clubs in the form of East Maitland.

By all accounts it was a tough game with one win, one draw and one loss.

Tea Gardens won the points 8.5 -1.5 and the master board 57-47.

Grade 7 were narrowly beaten by Stockton 0.5 - 9.5, 42-53 and although they will not make the playoffs this year, they can cause some damage in the remaining three rounds to those in contention.

The selectors are to be congratulated for sticking to the established combinations in Grade 6.

One team has had a tough time so far, but they carried the win today against Soldiers Point, blowing their opposition away by 10 shots!

Grade 6 took the points 9-1 and the master board 6151.

It’s ironic that Grade 6 have won all their home games so far but have yet to win at home.

Next week, Grade 4 travel to Lemon Tree Passage, Grade 5 play Fingal Bay at home, Grade 6 are at home to Karuah, and Grade 7 are away at Fingal Bay. All Tea Gardens Dolphin teams are sponsored by First National Real Estate.

In other news, the next round of the Major Pairs is scheduled for Sunday 2 May but that may change if Newcastle District schedules some wash-out games.

MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months May, June and July 2021.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf, annual, perennial and environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

On the roadsides and reserves, subject to availability and need, registered herbicides Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360, Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate), and/or Metsun 600, Lynx WG, Kenmet, Kenzon and/or Grazon extra will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable.
