By Sandra MURRAY A formidable partnership between the Tea Gardens Red Cross and the Boomerang Bags volunteers has led to women and children in need receiving cloth bags of goodies and toys over the christmas holidays.

The donations were the outcome of both a successful raffle and volunteer work by both community groups.

Red Cross member, Janet Baker, told NOTA, “We had a great christmas raffle.

“On behalf of the Red Cross I would like to thank all the wonderful local businesses who donated the great array of prizes.

“This year we teamed up with Boomerang Bags to pack and present our christmas toys and

WILD dogs from Jimmy’s Beach are becoming increasingly bold as they wander the streets and intimidate residents.

On Tuesday morning last week, seven dogs were spotted prowling the Anchorage when Pat Promley took her dog for a run.

“I woke up early at 5 am and as I was running there were seven dingoes strolling along,” Pat said.

Similar to the last reported sighting, the dingoes took great interest in the domestic pet.

Pat said, “I picked up my dog and returned home.”

“Luckily I hadn’t walked very far,” she explained.

Upon returning home, Pat contacted the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service and the police to report the incident.

Dingoes are skilled predators and hunt in packs to capture their prey, but the established pack which lives in Hawks Nest and Jimmy’s Beach has become more of a worry in recent years.

When food is scarce, dingoes may rely

on humans for scavenge leftovers, causing them to grow increasingly accustomed to the residential developments which surround their territory.

Locals are waiting on the council and national park rangers to find some form of solution after years of cohabitation with the q Dingo on the Beach in Hawks Nest.

Tea Gardens H.S.C student Parth Gulati thanks teachers and tutors AFTER receiving an ATAR of 98.15, local student Parth Gulati would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers who have helped him over the years, especially the teachers at Merewether High.

He said that he has nothing but admiration for his teachers who had to adapt to new teaching conditions during the Covid crisis and simultaneously instil confidence in their students.

He is also particularly grateful for the help which he received from Tea Gardens residents, especially Ronnie and Warwick Nichols who supported and advised him over the last two years. In spite of the daily commute to Merewether High, Parth was able to maintain his academic level and achieve good results.

Parth's father said that his resilience and hard work over the last year paid off and now he has big decisions to make.

Parth has been invited to study

medicine at three universities: Charles Sturt University in Orange, University of Queensland and Monash University, Melbourne.

He has also been invited to study Optometry at The University of New South Wales.

Parth said that he wa s

truly inspired to be a doctor after he made a field trip to Vanuatu.

He said that he saw the disparity between rural and urban health care and he observed and assisted a local doctor with general duties.

He sees the whole experience as a turning point in his life.

Parth is also an ardent soccer player and he played in local soccer teams until year 10.

His last team was The White Pointers.

In 2018 he won The Chris Rigby Award as the soccer player of the year and in 2018 he won a best and fairest award.

He also loves debating and in year 11 he participated in debating competitions. q Parth received an Parth is from a ATAR score of 98.15. thoroughly medical

family and his parents and relatives are all overjoyed that he has been accepted into medicine.

His grandparents on both sides of his family practice medicine in India and his parents practice dentistry in Tea Gardens.

Parth said that his grandparents truly rejoiced when they heard about his results.

They laughingly exclaimed that they were crying “tears of joy”.

Parth is passionate about life and his desire to be of use to people.

However, for the moment, he wishes to thank all the people who have guided him through his school years.

He feels particularly privileged to have gone to local schools: Tea Gardens Public School, Medowie Christian School and finally for year 11 and 12, Merewether High School.

His years of hard work have paid off and he is truly grateful that his parents brought him to such a caring community as Tea Gardens.

Fashion Pop-Up Op Shop raises over $3000

THERE was a fantastic community turnout at the fabulous Tea Gardens Pop-Up Op Shop held last Saturday 23 January, with the ‘Pearls of Port Stephens’ raising over $3000 to support research into Ovarian Cancer.

With style and whimsy, the donated fashion was carefully displayed

by volunteers so bargain hunters could easily find their sizes in clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery, and items all donated by the community.

Local, Margot Case, summed it up, “I bought so many lovely clothes, shoes, bags (yes I know I have too many) but at these amazing prices it's hard to not buy.”

The funds raised will support research and actions to help women with ovarian

cancer, to raise awareness and to improve outcomes for future generations.

Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in Australia.

About 1580 Australian women are diagnosed each year.

The ‘Pearls of Port Stephens’ group have had a strong start to the year, continuing to support the community through great fundraising activities and donations that make a difference.

Myall U3A Photography Group Clicks into Action for 2021

THE Myall University of the Third Age (U3A) Photography Group has geared up for a big year with keen members taking advantage of one of Australia’s most photogenic regions, the Myall Coast, to shoot in accordance with a set topic each month.

This month’s topic was “Shoot the Sunset” with the top shot by Malcolm Michael.

Last year, the Myall U3A Photography group had to operate safely online, sharing topics and photos whilst complying with COVID-19

guidelines.

This year they are meeting again, with the first 2021 meeting scheduled 2.30pm on 11 February, at the Hawks Nest Community Centre.

Social distancing and COVID-19 safe operating practices remain in place and the Centre hall will be disinfected in accordance with Government requirements and the protocols laid down by the U3A National Body.

Spokesperson and coconvenor for the Photography Group, Philip Dowling, told News Of The Area, “We are all

looking forward to 2021.

“Our Group comprises members with all levels of photographic interest and expertise.

“We use all sorts of cameras from sophisticated cameras through to point and shoot, and mobile phone cameras.

“We have experienced members but also many learners who benefit from our regular tutorial meetings.

“New members can join to improve their photos, often holiday shots that can be improved with some knowledge of photography.

“We are not a highly

competitive photography group like some.

“Rather we share a common interest in photography as a hobby or to capture images of our

needs repainting and whilst rust outbreaks are treated, the cost of a full repaint is $650K (compared to $700K for replacement): neither of these critical requirements are in the current budget. ● The one-way concept for wheeled traffic on the Singing Bridge footpaths is being considered, however is hindered by Marine Parks who manage the off take area under the bridge, Tea Gardens side. The PA re-emphasised that the current state is a potential disaster situation. ● There are an increasing number of Development Applications before Council for serious growth in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest and the PA is aware of Community concern about rezoning of height levels.

Of immediate concern is an application for rezoning an area between the golf club and the beach.

Some community groups are urging members to oppose the development, however we advise all to obtain the facts through the

Council website: https:// w w w. m i d c o a s t . n s w. g ov. . au/Have-Your-say/HawksNest-rezoning-proposal-andplanning-agreement ● Council officers were adamant that height levels will remain at a maximum of 12 metres: we will never become another Forster or Nelson Bay. ● The swimming pool closure remains a contentious issue (although under a State Government health directive).

To re-open Council would be required to finance a full-time employee under COVID-19 restriction. Won’t happen. ● Council is undertaking signage replacement and renewal and with 195 towns and localities to service this year, we will need to take our turn. ● The boat ramps are cleaned of growth every six months. Council was asked to attend to this more regularly as there have been several accidents, one requiring hospital treatment. ● No answer given to the question as to when will we receive a summary of the many submissions of the PAMP project.

Our community represents only 5% of the Shire with more emphasis placed on the higher population areas of Taree and Forster, who also contribute the most numbers of Councillors.

Perhaps it's time we consider seceding from the MidCoast and joining Port Stephens?

Geographically it makes sense.

How many of us know that when you dip your toe into the water on Jimmys Beach, you are actually in Port Stephens Shire.

Have a think about it and a subject for further discussion, under the proviso we maintain our height limits of course.

Last week, our State member, Kate Washington MP visited and will act on the following issues: ● Meals on Wheels and the Hawks Football team both require new or upgraded premises. ● Follow up with Transport NSW the need to install warning lights at the Myall Way / M1 intersection to ensure safety for increasing number of visitor vehicles

We would like to say, “G’day, you are very welcome with a gentle reminder that the beaches and amenities are for all and please dispose of all your rubbish responsibly and no illegal camping.”

No doubt this increase is a direct result of COVID-19, which again has prevented any formal meetings, however much has been happening.

We received a visit from the Directors of MidCoast Council, who fielded questions from the Progress Association (PA) with key outcomes below: : ● Council is financially sound and there is no possibility of a de-amalgamation and no possibility of reverting to a ward system in the election of Councillors. ● The Singing Bridge

Moving to other areas of interest, I note the success of the Fisheries Dept. oyster spat reefs in Karuah and Pindimar.

They are well established, with one reef now home to over 5 million spat.

These little fellows are water filter feeders, cleaning 400,000 litres per hour and critical to river health.

NSW Fisheries are about to continue the study with a new reef, so we can expect to see rocks appear on the Hawks Nest ferry ramp from 1 February 2021.

Finally, we would like to welcome our new members to the Association and invite people to join once we can start regular meetings.

Biscuit collision AROUND 2:40 pm on Saturday January 23, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by New South Wales Ambulance (NSWA) to Bulahdelah.

A 16-year-old was being towed behind a boat on a biscuit when it collided with trees, sustaining leg and

pelvic fractures.

The patient was treated on scene by local NSWA paramedics and the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team before he was flown to John Hunter Hospital.

He was in a stable condition.

Not too late to apply for bushfire rate relief FOLLOWING an announcement last year that Service NSW Rural Rate Relief for bushfire impacted properties would continue for a further six months, there’s more good news for local bushfire affected residents with the State Government announcing an extension on the application period for the rate relief policy.

Property owners now have until 17 February to submit their applications to Council for the additional six months of rate relief.

While MidCoast Council has already received over 100 applications, it’s anticipated there will be up to 2000 landholders who are eligible to receive the rates relief.

Council is urging all locals who were impacted by the fires to assess their eligibility using the guidance questions provided by the State Government and should they answer yes to all of the questions, submit their application as soon as possible.

The guidance questions are: 1. Is it a rural property?

2. Did the affected

property have a Council approved dwelling on it? (e.g. house, machinery shed, hay shed) 3. Was 75% or more of the property impacted by the fire?

4. Was most of the infrastructure lost? (e.g. most of the fencing, water tanks, irrigation, machinery) The NSW Government will pay council rates notices for eligible customers for Quarter 1 (July – September) and Quarter 2 (October – November) this financial year (2020–21).

This includes the land rates component and fixed service charges such as waste, where the amount is included on the council rates notice only.

This Council rate relief for Q1 and Q2 is in addition to the rate relief previously provided to land owners whose homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

Council needs to submit their list of identified properties to the State Government by 18 February so all applications must be submitted to MidCoast Council by COB 17 February

2021.

You can also apply in person at any of Council’s Customer Service points. If applying in person you will need to have a copy of your rates notice and evidence of infrastructure lost.

Evidence can include: Photos, satellite imagery, insurance claims, a letter from a clean-up agency or Building impact assessments, a statutory declaration identifying the damage and signed by a Justice of the Peace, confirmation of receipt of the Red Cross Reestablishment Grant or the Rural Assistance Authority Special Disaster Grant.

Rhyme and Storytime returns to our libraries MIDCOAST Council’s Libraries team can’t wait to get back into regular programming in 2021, with the return of some of their most loved regular events.

Face-to-face early literacy programs will return to Libraries in February after programs were suspended last year due to COVID-19.

Families across the region will once again be able to enjoy songs, rhymes, stories and movement at Baby Rhyme Time for

babies aged 0-24months and Storytime for children aged 2-5yrs.

Since COVID restrictions came into force in March 2020, the libraries team was forced to innovate and take all programming online, including offering weekly virtual storytime sessions.

“Being able to bring families back into the library for the regular early literacy programs is very exciting and we cannot wait to welcome our everyone back,” said Chris

Jones, Manager of MidCoast Council Libraries.

“These programs are so important and help establish a love for the library from an early age so we’re all so pleased to have them running in their original format again.”

Great to see Karen Green and Lynne Green returning to bowls this week, both absent from bowls for a few months for various reasons.

District News: Robyn Beaumont partnered by her husband Scott (Karuah Bowling Club) have been competing in the Newcastle District Mixed Pairs Competition.

Round 1 of this competition was played at Merewether on Sunday 17 January.

They had a win here fighting back from being behind by 12 shots (3 v15) to winning by 1 shot on the last end 17 v 16.

The team they were up against were a Grade 1 Pennant Team from Charlestown/ Kotara. Unfortunately history didn't repeat itself in Round 2 contested on Sunday 24 January, once again very "stiff" opposition Grade 1 players Beresfield/Raymond Terrace combination defeated Robyn and Scott 17 v 11.

Better luck next year guys.

TUESDAY 19 January: A good turn up of bowlers, despite the overcast weather conditions.

Format for play, 3 games of 2 bowls Triples 21 ends and a game of Fours 21 ends.

Unfortunately play was interrupted due to rain the Triples were reduced to 18 ends and the Fours to 14 ends.

Sue Morris, Judy McGavock and Karen Green on the 4th end held the lead 6 v1 bowling against Dawn Jones, Dot Dallas and Dale Winter.

Dale's team must have bowled "out of their skin" over the next 12 ends, they amassed 19 points while Karen's ladies remained on 6 shots.

Final result: a win to Dale's side 21 v 9.

Judi Polak, Bette Saillard and Maynie Roberts were holding their own against Irene Roberts, Deyonne Page and Robyn Webster till the 10th end after that they only won two ends ultimately losing 22 v 11.

A close game on the next rink, Sheila Rattray, Sheril Johnson and Wendy Jones v Jan Coomer, Lynda Richards and Karen McPhie.

Scores were drawn on the 4th, 8th, 11th and 13th ends.

Karen's team the victors 19 v 16.

The Fours was a contest between Dawn May, Christine Fossey, Jean Glover and Robyn Beaumont v Ingrid Luck, Lyn Nightingale, Jill McBride and Sandra Leisemann.

This also was a tight game with both teams in the lead at various stages, Sandra's team winning by 2 shots 12 v 10.

The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were the 3D's Dawn, Dot and Dale.

Thursday 21st January: 3 games of Triples and a game of Fours, 12 ends.

While other cooking shows promise fast, simple, weeknight meals of five ingredients or less, Nigella Lawson prefers a much more unhurried pace. Her calm manner and utter joy in food is infectious and her creations always delicious. There is almost a mesmerising ritual to the way she prepares and shares her meals. Tonight, recalling her grandmother’s creme caramel, Nigella prepares a caramel custard. Then, with comfort the main intention, she introduces two dishes that are a perfect match: black pudding meatballs and brown butter colcannon. She also shows off her kitchen gadget cupboard including her electric potato masher.

Depending where you live, you might view the title of this travel show as a little dig in the side as most of the country’s travel plans have been put on hiatus. But because our backyard has seemingly shrunk, it’s refreshing and inspiring to jump on board Ernie Dingo’s jaunts around this gorgeous country of ours. Armchair tourism is reaching new heights. In tonight’s season four return, Ernie is in Queensland, where he travels to Bowen and meets traditional owners who are passionate about saving the sea turtles. Then he heads to the Whitsundays, where the footage of the postcard-perfect settings is almost as good as being there.
