All three locations appear to be suffering from an inadequate irrigation supply, which comes from the North Hawks Nest Sewerage Treatment Plant, via a concrete storage tank behind the Oval.

Next, the Croquet Club’s individual supply link has been stymied by a broken essential part, the replacement of which

entirely man-made, and comes as the result of a convoluted recent history of changes to supply, origin and distribution.

“After the Myall Oval and Providence Bay Park were put on recycled sewage irrigation, Council decided to put us on it too,” Croquet Club representative Andrew Sillar told NOTA. “Before that, we were

In 2018, Myall Park Croquet Club hosted games for the Australian GolfCroquet Championships, with lush green lawns for the national-level event.

A spokesperson for MidCoast Council told News Of The Area, “MidCoast Council has ordered the necessary part for the irrigation system.

“We are expecting that the supplier will provide early in the new year.

“In the interim, we thank the staff and club members who have been manually watering noting the hot and dry conditions.

“Recent rain will hopefully provide some relief.”

A RECENT clean-up of the Winda Woppa Sand Transfer System (STS) has provided hope, for some, that the installation may be used for its intended purpose once again.

Last spotlighted in June, the STS is the pumping facility located at the extreme end of Winda Woppa peninsula, where the Myall River meets Jimmys Beach, alongside the Natural Channel that is currently filling up with sand.

Back in June, NOTA revealed the overgrown and forgotten site, complete with sandhills that nearly covered the fences, and a gate left wide open.

In December, the site is clean and clear of encroachments, the setup is neatly ordered, there are new warning signs on the stockpile, and the gate is also locked now.

The STS, which was commissioned in July 2019, was a $4.1 million project funded jointly by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, the Department of Primary Industries Crown Lands and Water and MidCoast Council to trial a solution of using pumps to take sand from a stockpile at the end of the Winda Woppa peninsula to Jimmys Beach.

That stockpiled sand is sourced from the sediment that gradually fills up the Natural Channel between Corrie Island and Jimmys Beach, and is re-dredged on a five-yearly schedule.

“Recent work done around the STS was general maintenance to ensure the site remains ready should we need to use this method for the next sand campaign,” a

MidCoast Council spokesperson told NOTA. “A review of the use of the sand transfer system which was designed to pump sand from the stockpile to the beach is still underway, and following two renourishment campaigns, the operation and cost of the system has been independently reviewed.”

Council’s Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott said, “Initial indications show the STS proven to be effective, but it is only one method of renourishing the beach, so we will go forward using a mix of methods to transfer sand to q

ensure we protect the road and consequently the homes located on the peninsula.

“Sand trucking also remains a viable option, so we will continue to use trucks when appropriate and will choose the most economical method each time we need to replenish the beach,” Mr Scott said.

According to residents along Winda Woppa, trucking appears to be the most common option, having witnessed it at least twice a year, the STS last being activated many years ago.

The Sand Transfer System looks ready to fire up.

Carols in the Club

A MINOR Christmas miracle occurred when the weather turned from muggy heat to much-needed rain, dashing the plans of mice and men on Wednesday, 20 December.

The writing was on the wall, however, as St Andrews’ ‘Carols in the Park’ was nearly cancelled outright, until one

Many had come for the regular Wednesday raffles, and many more stayed for the Carols, which, technical teething aside, were played out by muso members of the

St Andrews Anglican Church.

QR codes were hastily updated and dispersed to allow patrons at the Club full access to the song list, as were some very popular multicoloured electronic candles.

Biblical snippets interspersed the songs, and Reverend Goscombe spoke passionately about the story of the 1914 Christmas truce during WWI. “It was astounding when the peace of Christmas broke into the hell of man,” declared the Reverend.

The current situation around modern Bethlehem, where many of the songs were set, was also addressed.

A full room of carollers joined the band and listened to the soloists as they delivered traditional carols and prayers, and everyone joined in on the best-known songs like ‘Silent Night’, ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’, and the new local favourite, ‘Aussie Jingle Bells’.

As Christmas miracles go, this was a nice one of which to be a part.

By Thomas O’KEEFE LIGHTS, cameras and Christmas action fuelled the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Properties/Lions Christmas Lights Competition, finally judged on Thursday 14 December, and announced at the Lights Festival the following Friday. “There were many close calls, but by the end of it, the winner and

second-place were clear,” one of the judges told NOTA. “The good people on Settlers Way put in a truly stunning and consistent effort, though it seemed even bigger this year.

“The second-place winner had a lot of heart, and included some elements that were genuinely unique, including a snow-machine, and made great use of their

house’s original façade.”

“We do it for the kids,” said the runners-up, “this is the only place in Tea Gardens where it snows this year!”

Brigades of inflatable decorations populated many lawns this year, with wireframe reindeer lighting up in flocks for all the illuminated Santas ready to take to the rooftops.

The best spot to start the adventure is off any one of the jetties from Shoal Bay to Karuah and across to Tea Gardens on the north side.

The hottest jetties are Shoal Bay and Salamander, where there is heaps of room and there is always a big chance to catch a whiting, bream or flathead.

The inside beaches are the safest of all options and the good news is that they are loaded up with whiting keen to attack a well presented worm on a No 4 hook.

Here are a few tips when

introducing kids to the wonders of angling.

Firstly, give the learners your total attention, which means you don't get the opportunity to cast a line.

Don't spend too much time talking - the kids want action not words.

Avoid using big hooks and remember that kids do not need to catch big fish to have big fun.

Insist on safety and take time to explain to the kids the importance of protecting the environment.

Finally, enjoy the experience.

Lions representatives had toured the area in the days before the judging to letterbox-drop and encourage more residences to enter the competition.

There were, sadly, many missed opportunities, with

several other houses putting on a great display, some even looking professionally-done, if there is such a thing.

The show goes on as the Karuah Progress Association is also running its Lights Competition from 15 to 30 December, with hopefully plenty of lights to be enjoyed, and they will be judged and winners announced early in the New Year.

Thomas O’Keefe: My 2023 writing for Myall Coast NOTA

WHEN I started writing for the NOTA way back in March of this year, there was no knowing what this year would deliver.

It started with Motorfest, then, slowly but surely, individuals, groups and the community itself began to tell me of their triumphs, trials and tribulations, many seeking a voice while feeling they had none.

That word, ‘community’, finally took on a relatable meaning for me this year.

Not just a great TV show, a community is when humans do things for each other more than for themselves, and that

concept simply did not exist back in the lonely bowels of Sydney.

Right across Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar, Bundabah, North Arm Cove, Karuah and even Stroud – each locale has opened up and it has been my privilege to meet you, help you tell you stories, and record your images on the public record.

This time last year, journalism was not a part of my repertoire, although I am an experienced teacher, engineer, bartender, tourguide – to name a few – and I have utmost reverence for the power of words.

I have enjoyed articulating the local psyche, covering

sports, environmental issues, historical stories, major events, fundraisers, and countless interviews of many hidden talents.

Picking a ‘favourite’ story is nigh-on impossible, but I can say that any story about people enjoying what they do, and doing it with a passion and purpose, for the good of the community – fervent footballers, valiant volunteers, audacious artists, faithful fundraisers – those stories are always a genuine pleasure to write up.

I have shared your milestones, birthdays and anniversaries, heralded your incredible feats of talent, and passionate projects that have

Santa debuted his new sleigh, specially tailored by the Tea Gardens Men’s Shed,

replete with cool side-lighting and the only place for Santa photos in town this year.

“I've had lots of young visitors asking for ‘reasonable’ presents, like motorcycles, dolphins, and very specific dog breeds,” Santa told NOTA. With his reindeer on break, warming up for their round-the-world trip on 24

beautified and transformed so many parts of so many towns.

Our ridiculously stunning natural environment is the perfect backdrop, and often

the focus, of so many great stories that I only wish to cover more.

Our towns are composed, ultimately, of just two

things: the people, and the environment in which we live, and I hope that you will keep talking to me into the future – I’ll be the one with the leather-bound notepad, reporter’s bag and hat, taking it all in so you can read about it, next edition.

Christmas Festival brings season to town

T’WAS the season in Tea Gardens as the Lions Christmas Festival was successfully held at Myall Plaza on Friday, 15 December.

Many months in the making, the Christmas Festival saw solid representations from local services, small businesses, and several community groups, and even a visit from Dr David Gillespie MP, Federal Member for Lyne.

Local talents provided the seasonal sounds, with live musical stylings by Ol’ Spice, and choral group Viva Voce, who sang many classic carols as visitors roamed the lot.

Local authors Ray Keipert and Greg Mutton were also in attendance, the latter gearing up for another book launch in

John sends his best wishes to all our readers.

WHAT a year of reporting for NOTA! About 30,000 words later and over 200 photos, it has been an interesting year reporting what is going on in my patch of this region.

It’s always difficult to pick your best story or two from over the past year.

It feels like picking your favourite child.

They’re all great and worthy!

I say to people who throw ideas at me that many things are interesting but only some things are newsworthy, so sometimes it’s at your discretion what you choose to

write about.

Being involved with about a dozen community organisations gives me a great insight into what’s going on around my local area and experience writing in many different genres also helps.

I’ll discount the computer, camera and internet failures (too numerous to mention), having to warm my hands up in winter before I can actually write anything, and of course the ever-patient editor Doug Connor, who accepts my lame excuses on asking for a few more minutes so I can get a story in past the deadline.

My favourite stories are those that deal with people,

whether that be a significant wedding anniversary, a 100th birthday, a retirement after serving for a significant time, or simply organisations or individuals doing something out of the ordinary.

There’s been many and you have all been interesting and worthy of reporting.

My second lot of favourite stories have been the various food trails, swap meets and markets as I like buying stuff and eating.

The saddest series of stories I reported on was the death of the former Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead, who I knew for many years.

What story comes to mind

the most?

It was a story about the Bulga State Forest where Council had a motion to end logging in the area.

I interviewed someone who had a background in Forestry and National Parks and honestly the transcript ran at a dozen pages, so I had to decide within my word limitations what was the point they were trying to get across.

The story generated some comment and I guess that’s what you hope for when writing stories.

In 2024 I am planning a bit more sleep.

Stinker’s Fishin’: Head for the islands

WHAT is it about islands that attracts snapper?

Every island and rocky outcrop from Birubi to Broughton provides excellent fishing, with snapper leading the way.

Big and Little Rocky, Boulder Bay outcrops, Falsey Island (Battleship Island) at Fingal, Shark Island, Boondelbah and Broughton are loaded up.

Keep in mind that Cabbage Tree Island is in Sanctuary Zone and cannot be targeted for anything other than bait.

The game plan when chasing snapper is to anchor

off the island and let the wind blow you just short of the strike zone, which is the churning waves crashing into the rocky island walls.

Snapper love these conditions, particularly on dusk and dawn, when they cruise through the white water in search of unsuspecting baitfish or any crab that has lost its grip.

Set a rich berley trail of muddied bread mixed with bits and pieces of prawn and fish scraps.

It won’t take long before small fish gather behind the boat.

Sweep, yellowtail and slimy mackerel will go crackers.

A big prawn, yellowtail, fresh squid, fresh bonito or slimy mackerel strip, floated through a rich berley trail of bread and prawn scraps, cannot be rejected.

I would suggest a 20

pound line to a 5/0 - 6/0 hook.

Toss to the back of the berley trail with an unweighted bait and hang on!

There is another way.

Plastics!

A method growing in popularity - a jelly-like lure which is tossed and retrieved from a drifting boat.

As an old bait user, I am not qualified to speak about plastics although I have used

them in the past with success.

WAC-a-Do Christmas Gathering

THE WAC (Women And Cancer) Group met for their Christmas ‘WAC-A-DO’ at Palm Lake Resort’s Promenade Clubhouse on Monday, 4 December, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

“The group started over 22 years ago, when Anne Reynolds instigated a meeting to form a Breast Cancer support group,” said coordinator Lesley Kibble, who has been a Palm Lake resident for sixteen years, and a member of the Women and Cancer Group for fourteen.

“It was enthusiastically agreed that a locally operating group would greatly benefit

many, as several attendees shared feelings of isolation.”

Over the years, the group evolved to include all women who have been affected by any form of cancer, and the group has meetings over afternoon coffee or a fun-filled informal luncheon once a month.

They now have 27 ladies on the mailing list, including many original members.

“We no longer focus on the intensity and effects of cancer, but on the inspiration provided from long-term survivors of our group, seeking to support, encourage and develop friendships whilst sharing our strengths within a positive environment,” Ms Kibble explained.

A very Myall U3A Christmas

CHRISTMAS celebrations and the Annual General Meeting for the Myall University of the 3rd Age (MU3A) saw the group say goodbye to some and welcome the active participation of many more.

“Thank you Linda (Leggott), for the last three years as our President,” MU3A Publicity Officer Annie Rutter said.

“You have done a marvellous job and will be

The MU3A warmly welcomed new President Ms Anya Schuette, wishing her all the best as she takes on this new role.

One brilliant event followed another, including U3A member Lee Clayton serenading those present with a new, original 30-year anniversary song, just one of many spotlights on the talents

that the U3A can foster for its members.

The members were able to enjoy some traditional Christmas songs, presented by their very own music group, whilst being able to feast their eyes upon some of MU3A’s Photography and Art Group masterpieces that were created throughout the year.

The coming new year’s programs will witness the re-commencement of the Choir Group – always a favourite in the past, and surely a good one to bring back.

SINGING and entertainment abounded at the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Sunday, 17 December, as the Baptist Church hosted items from

the Anglican, Uniting and Catholic Churches to jointly celebrate the religious side of Christmas.

The talented members of the Baptist bands ‘Sage’ and ‘New Start’, of ‘Live, Live, Live’

monthly concerts fame, led more than 100 carol-singers with lyrics on the big screen, interspersed with some solo and group acts from around Tea Gardens.

‘Mary Did You Know?’ was sung by the Catholic Church choir, who had to adapt to the sudden switch from a live pianist to a recording, but made the big crescendo at the end.

Baptist Pastor Len Roberts spoke of the meaning of Christmas, commenting, “In many places, churches don't seem to get on, but in this town, they get along like a house on fire, so go to any church on Christmas Day.” The penultimate song, 'Silent Night', was augmented by the audience waving phone torches, a safer and more modern option than candles, led by Andrew, while the finale, ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’, was belted out by all.

By Doug CONNOR, Group Editor IN June 2020, amid rapidly developing pandemic conditions, I sat at the coffee table in my Brisbane unit and spoke to Michael ‘Mick’ Wright via Zoom for the first time.

It was a tough time for newspapers, with hundreds of regional publications disappearing or becoming digital-only in the few months prior due to rising costs and dwindling profits.

The owner of two weekly newspapers in the Hunter region, Mick had a dream to go bigger, and quickly, too.

“Launching newspapers in this economic climate?” I thought.

“Crazy!

“How long?

“A month?!”

Clearly easily convinced, several weeks later I was at the Wright family’s Medowie property filling my four-wheeldrive with news stands, on route to Coffs Harbour to set up a newspaper, the Coffs Coast News Of The Area.

Having been out of the news game for several years, it was a fairly bizarre re-entry into the world of newspapers; door knocking at businesses around the region for three days to find stockists for a paper which did not yet exist.

Thankfully, the community welcomed us with open arms, and just a few days later, the first edition was published.

Taxing thoughts SOME people may complain, but paying our fair share of taxation is how we fund the daily cost of running and developing our country.

What few can agree upon is what a fair share looks like.

It is in our Aussie DNA to think that others should be paying more tax than we do.

The late and great Kerry Packer had this issue by the throat when he is alleged to have opined that “anyone who doesn’t strive to minimise their tax burden is an

In order to gain favours from the voting public, governments seem to overextend themselves to provide nonproductive investment in ventures that continue to cost revenue rather than produce it.

The ATO’s eighth corporate tax transparency report detailed some 2,500 big companies, of which 32 percent did not pay any tax whatsoever.

In order to raise more revenue, governments have developed a binge mentality and simply find new methods of tax collection in order to satisfy their habit.

This, more often than not, leads to debt creation, which only worsens the position for governments that follow to deal with.

There must be a better and fairer way in which to raise revenue for the purpose of

Surely a better way to collect taxation would be to tax money when it is being spent.

This allows people to earn as much as they can in order to better their position in life, without penalising their incentive to be their productive best.

People only generate money so they can spend it on daily life, to provide for the future of their family, and invest for their eventual retirement.

You can’t dodge spending money, be it in

activities of the district”.

While the reach, and team, has grown since those early days, the dream remains the same: high quality local news products that benefit the communities in which they operate.

In 2024 we will continue striving towards that lofty goal.

However, there appears to be a number of methods where people and corporations can hide or transfer income in order to dodge income tax.

Tax when spending appears to me to be a cleaner and more accurate method of revenue raising which covers everyone equally as it is almost impossible to dodge.

The best example of this we have is the GST, which is a ten percent tax on every dollar we spend.

The difficulty appears to be how people perceived the introduction of GST. We were told that it would replace many other small and annoying taxes.

In reality it became just another tax and those taxes it was said to replace still existed after the change was introduced.

My suggestion is that taxing money when it is being spent is far preferable to the mishmash of many methods for governments to put their hands into our pockets.

It could be that a tax rate of 20 percent on all expenditures would generate more than the present messy system that is regularly avoided by many people and the largest corporations doing business in Australia.

SWIMMING is a passion for the Myall Mullets Swimmers, who go out at 7:30am every day of the year, variously claiming “stupidity, love of life, a fun social group, a good start to the day, or just love of the Bay”.

“The Mullets were started

by Laurie Bickery and David Poole, then Chris Mobbs got involved and encouraged a lot of people to join,” Mullet Liz McKay told NOTA. “Many have been competitive Australian Masters swimmers, but all walks of life join us, and we have visitors from Sydney, Melbourne, and even Canada.

“Some can’t really start the day without our saltwater swim... and the coffee afterwards,” explained Ms McKay.

Up to 20 Mullets, including 90-year-old Ian Dunlop, will go out, even in the choppy south-easterly,

swimming west along the shore, using Winda Woppa houses, poles and trees as landmarks for distance: the

'glasshouse', 'Casa' and 'the fisheye', Barnes Rocks is the furthest most go.

Dolphins sometimes join

them, but bull sharks are always in the back of their minds, so most stay within 100 metres of the shoreline.
