BRUCE Murray, the President of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, marched for the first time this ANZAC Day with the Tea Gardens Returned and Services League (RSL) of Australia sub-Branch.

Bruce told News Of The Area he was inspired to join the Defence Force by his three uncles who served during WWII. “One in the Royal Australian Navy on the Corvettes, one in the 8th Division (later captured by the Japanese in Singapore), and one who served in North Africa and the Pacific with the 9th Division,” Bruce said.

family connection, it was the training that inspired me to enlist.

“I also liked the idea of being able to travel with a permanent job and career,” he said.

Bruce’s first encounter in Defence came at the age of twenty-one.

“I joined the Citizens Military Force (CMF), Two Commando Company at Fort Gellibrand in Williamstown, Victoria.

“I was attracted to the Commandos because of the range of training including parachuting, rock climbing, small craft handling, scuba diving and specialist weapons handling.

“The training was intense but looking back it was a great experience.

“I was discharged from the CMF when I returned to rural Victoria as I could no longer travel.”

In 1981, Bruce joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as a Radio Technician Trainee.

“After graduation I was posted to RAAF Williamtown to work on the Mirage III radar.

“In 1987, I transitioned to F/A-18 Hornet avionics equipment maintenance.

“In 1992, I was commissioned as an Electronics Engineer and then spent most of my career working on the F/A-18 Hornet.

“Some of my roles included Logistics Support, Senior Engineering Officer (SENGO), Senior Technical Liaison Officer to the USN for F/A-18 Hornets, and Exchange Officer to the USMC. “My most rewarding experiences came from working in 75 Squadron, VMFAT-101 (United State Marine Corps) and 77 Squadron.

“I knew instinctively that those old men remembered the horrors of war and would be reluctant to ever go there again.

“Sadly, many of those men are gone and we are once again facing the prospect of death and destruction on a global scale.

“Secondly, it is a day to reflect and remember that all our veterans and serving members deserve and need our support as they adjust to life after the military.

“We should never underestimate the benefit of ‘just being there’ for people who may be struggling with the pressures of modern life.

“Finally, I believe that the camaraderie and mateship from service is very much alive and well in the modern Defence Force as I am sure it is with all Services.

Bruce was also fortunate to be aboard the USS Constellation during the filming of the Aircraft Carrier sequences for the movie Pearl Harbour.

“Seeing four B-25 Mitchell bombers taking off from the ‘Connie’ was an experience I will never forget,” he said.

Bruce spent most of his career at RAAF Williamtown but also posted to Katherine (NT), San Diego California, Washington DC and Southern Maryland, Glenbrook NSW and Laverton.

“I also participated in exercises and operations in Singapore, Indonesia, Canada, USA and Diego Garcia.”

Bruce believes ANZAC Day today is more important than ever.

“Firstly, it is an important reminder of the sacrifice that comes with conflict.

On 12 April, Bao Lin pled guilty to four offences against the Water Management Act 2000 - the unauthorised clearing of vegetation, construction of dams, and associated activities on waterfront land on privately owned property near Tea Gardens.

The offences impacted Station Creek and some of its tributaries joining Bundabah Creek, which is part of the North Arm Cove Sanctuary Zone of the Great Lakes Marine Park, and occurred from acquisition of the premises in 2015 until 2020.

Between 2016 and 2019 there were three main regulators who investigated activities undertaken at the premises, being the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) – Water, DPI – Fisheries, and Water NSW. The prosecutor, the Natural Resources Access Regulator (NRAR), became involved in the investigation in 2018.

Justice Robson determined that the company was in full control of all the causes which gave rise to the offences.

“Bao Lin undertook the controlled activities involving the removal of vegetation along four watercourses, without a controlled activity approval, and constructed a dam in a number of creek beds, which included the removal

of vegetation in the beds and on the banks of those watercourses.

“In each circumstance, Bao Lin had control over the causes that gave rise to the offences and by the commission of the offences caused harm to the environment,” Justice Robson said Justice Robson also deemed that the offences were in the range of “moderate seriousness”.

For the removal of vegetation and endangered ecological communities, the company was fined $64,600.

For clearing vegetation and depositing material within 40 metres of a water course, it was fined another $57,000.

Justice Robson fined the company a further $64,600 for constructing an unauthorised dam on a watercourse.

The dam has now been removed.

Bao Lin was originally charged with thirteen offences and Justice Robson stated that the “subsequent pleas of guilty may have avoided a more lengthy hearing on liability”.

Bao Lin has not apologised to the Court or the community for undertaking the works, and the company has also chosen not to accept responsibility for its actions, specifically in relation to the construction

of the second dam.

The court further ordered that the stream bank vegetation corridor around this dam be widened by the landholder.

The company has been ordered to pay legal costs of NRAR in an amount yet to be determined, and to publicise the matter in digital and print publications across the region.

Community Conversations kick off EVERYONE is encouraged to join in MidCoast Council’s ‘Community Conversations’ program,

which will come to the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Thursday 12 May. Council staff and

Councillors will visit sixteen locations across the MidCoast over the coming weeks to learn

more about community priorities, provide updates on local projects and answer questions.

“We recognise that what’s important in one community will be different in another, and our aim through these sessions is to provide a platform for open dialogue that helps us drill down at a very local level," Mayor Claire Pontin said.

Each conversation will provide the community with an opportunity to share their concerns, ask questions and table ideas.

“We are also encouraging community members to register a topic of interest before they attend, this will allow us to ensure we have all the information on hand that matters most to your particular community,”

Mayor Pontin said.

Community Conversations will be held at locations from Elands in the north to Tea Gardens in the south and west to Gloucester and Stroud.

ANZAC Day On The Myall

AFTER two years of restrictions imposed on ANZAC Day, the community of the Myall came out in force on Monday to share in the commemorations.

Every year ANZAC Day offers an opportunity to reflect and to honour those that have paid the ultimate price.

2022 marks 80 years since World War II hit our shores with the bombing of Darwin.

However ANZAC Day is no longer just about the veterans from World War I and World War II. Veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan service are now front and centre.

ANZAC Day was commemorated at ANZAC Park in Tea Gardens with a moving service.

It was attended by a range of community groups including the Tea Gardens Lions Club, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club, and local school groups.

The Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, attending the Anzac Day service at the Delhi War Cemetery in India said, “Today, we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of our current and former servicemen and women who have served and died in all conflicts, and our allies and partners who have served alongside them.

“The service and sacrifice displayed by the ANZAC’s at Gallipoli laid the foundations of the modern Australian Defence Force and shaped our national character.

“The freedom we have known does not come without a price.

“From the periled landing on the Gallipoli peninsula 107 years ago, to our more recent operations in the Middle East, we pause alongside all Australians to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“The ADF has a long history of protecting Australia and its interests from those who

Youth on Track Extended

THE NSW Government has announced $9 million to extend the highly successful Youth Justice NSW early intervention program, Youth on Track.

This funding will allow extension of the program until December 2023, ensuring that young people continue to be supported.

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Minister for Police Paul Toole, said the Youth on Track program provides support for ten to seventeen-year-olds who are at risk of long-term involvement in the criminal justice system.

“This is about giving young people who’ve had a brush with the law the tools to stop them re-offending – and we know it works.

“Since its inception in 2013, the program has supported more than 350 young offenders each year to reduce their risk of reoffending and halved their contact with police,” Mr Toole said.

“When a young person comes into contact with the criminal justice system it is imperative that we do everything we can to turn their life around,” Mr Bromhead said.

“By intervening early and providing young people with the support they need using a multi-agency approach, we can engage them in education, mental health services, family supports, and behaviour change that help to significantly reduce their risk of reoffending.”

Youth on Track assists youth through a targeted individualised intervention program which addresses the underlying causes of youth involvement in crime.

The program operates in the Myall Lakes as well as in the Hunter, Central West, Mid North Coast, New England, Blacktown, Riverina and Coffs Harbour areas.

Referrals to the program are made by police, schools and a range of family support services, health and justice services providers.

Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services, Natasha Maclaren-Jones said the scheme has been extremely successful since its inception in 2013, supporting over 350 young offenders each year to reduce their risk of reoffending and reduce their contact with police by half.

“The key to this program’s success is that each young person is allocated a case manager and each case plan is targeted to the needs of each individual young person.

“This program really empowers young people to avoid re-offending, make positive decisions and take control of their lives,” Mrs Maclaren Jones said.

Case managers work closely with young people and their families, identifying triggers and supporting those with behavioural and mental health issues.

Life After Vietnam

“It was the most blessed day, I tell you, it was just amazing.

“Then they decided to build the National Vietnam Forces Memorial in Canberra in 1992, and they had a parade to open it, and that was even bigger.”

Jenny said the public and government response to the war exacerbated the horrific effects many service personnel had experienced in action. ““Eventually the government finally acknowledged that the Vietnam veterans had been treated despicably for years and years.

“They felt it too.

“They had PTSD, back in the First and Second World War they called it shellshock, but the circumstances of a jungle war are so different to the Battle of the Somme etc.

“They were left with foot rot, malaria, and all sorts of things that impacted them for a long time.”

Jenny describes those days of anti-veteran sentiment as “the saddest of times”.

“It was such a pity that the majority of Australians rejected them, and rejected people like me.”

Jenny is currently the Secretary of the Tea Gardens RSL sub-Branch.

“I have been the secretary for years, but 50 years ago they wouldn’t have let me in the door,” she said.

Five decades later, Jenny keeps in contact with many of her husband’s friends from 5RAR. “The camaraderie of those men who served with my husband is still as strong as if they were all over there together.

“His batman Ron Mitchell lives at Townsville, and his sniper is a bloke who lives at Corryong.

“They virtually adopted Joanne as her grandfathers.

“They keep in touch with us all the time.

“Even though I remarried, it never mattered.

“I was still their Skippers’ widow.”

Normally marching each year at the Tea Gardens ANZAC Day commemorations, this year Jenny travelled to a memorial service for her father at Matraville, Sydney, before heading into the city to join the parades.

Her father served in the Navy on minesweepers.

Keen to follow in her father’s footsteps, Jenny joined the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corp as an Officer Cadet in her youth.

“By graduation time I was engaged to be married and had the choice to stay in the Army or get out.

“I chose to get out, thank heavens.

“I mean I loved it, but circumstances intervened, and just as well, because I would never have had that time with Brian or have had Joanne,” Jenny said.

Brian now has an eighteen-month-old great granddaughter called Brianna, who marched in in Sydney with her mum Joanne and her great grandfather's regiment this ANZAC Day. “Life goes on,” Jenny said.

WHILE the rest of the country celebrated Australia Day on January 27, 1969, Jennefer Ross-Henry was farewelling her husband, Brian Geoffrey Walker, as he left to fight in Vietnam with 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR).

Tragically, Brian was killed less than three months later, aged only 21.

“He was killed by gunshot wounds from the South Vietnamese on 9 March 1969,” Jenny said.

“It was an accident, but he was killed in action.

“I still relive it.

“It was 53 years ago and could have been yesterday sometimes,” she said.

The couple’s newborn child Joanne was just six months old when Brian died.

In fact, Brian was meant to join the war effort a year earlier with 1RAR, but a broken shoulder obtained while playing squash kept him in Australia long enough to meet his daughter.

After Brian’s death, Jenny reached out to veteran’s organisation Legacy for assistance.

“There was no support at all at that time,” Jenny said.

“Legacy came to the house and said, ‘We are terribly sorry, but we are absolutely inundated with World War Two and Korean War widows and their children, we can’t help you at all’.”

Legacy told Jenny to contact the War Widows Guild for some “moral support”.

“Only a few months after Brian was killed, I pushed the pram all the way up the hill from mum and dad’s place at Coogee to the RSL, where the War Widows Guild was meeting.

“I knocked on the door and walked in to see all these ladies sitting around the table.”

Jenny addressed the group, detailing the tragedy of Brian’s recent death in Vietnam.

“I said, ‘Good morning, my name is Jennefer Walker and I have recently been widowed’.

“This old woman sitting at the table looked at me and said, ‘We don’t acknowledge Vietnam as a war, it is only a conflict, you cannot be a War Widow!’

“It was wicked.”

Jenny said her treatment was indicative of the general feeling within Australia towards war in Vietnam at the time.

“Blokes coming back from Vietnam couldn’t join the RSL! “The old blokes didn’t consider it a war, but people were dying just the same,” she said.

When her husband’s regiment, 5RAR, returned to Australian shores in March 1970, Jenny travelled to Garden Island to welcome the boys home.

When the soldiers got off the ship, Jenny walked with them up Elizabeth Street into a pub they loved on Bathurst Street.

“I was with two young men in uniform, both 21 years old.

“We were told to leave.

“They wouldn’t serve anyone who was wearing a uniform.

“That’s the way it was.

“They did a welcome home march at that time, and they were spat on, eggs were thrown on them, rotten tomatoes, you name it,” she said.

Nearly two decades later, on 3 October 1987, Vietnam veterans were properly recognised when the National Reunion was held in Sydney, and then-Prime Minister Bob Hawke renamed Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day. “I am telling you, it was the greatest parade and march that Sydney had ever seen, maybe except the peace march after the Second World War,” Jenny said.

“Before that Welcome Home parade, some of those boys had never been in contact with the mates they had met in Vietnam.

“They finally came out of the woodwork and joined their mates.

Bitou bush spraying commencing in May MIDCOAST Council will commence its annual coastal bitou bush eradication program on 9 May, starting at Crowdy Head around to Harrington Breakwall, then targeting the following sites along the coast: Boomerang Point, Bald Head, Cellito Beach/Sandbar, Bennetts Beach, Jimmys Beach, Winda Woppa Reserve and Yaccaba.

Spraying is expected to take approximately eight weeks.

As with last year’s program, drones will be used to target bitou bush seedling regrowth particularly in the aftermath of bushfire and floods.

“We’ve used this method of targeted spraying with the drones over the past two years and it’s been

shown to be effective in minimising regrowth,” said Gerard Tuckerman, Council’s Manager of Natural Systems.

Some sites will require partial closure to the public, depending on weather, prevailing winds, and nofly zones imposed by RAAF Williamtown.

“We’ll be placing signage in advance of any spraying, as well as notifying residents near any of the target areas.

“Spraying shouldn’t cause too much interference with beach activities, but anyone using the beach on the day should obey signage and any directions from staff on the ground,” added Mr Tuckerman.

Bitou bush invades native coastal heathlands

and dunes. It grows quickly and forms dense hummocks between which coastal breeze is channelled promoting erosion.

Bitou bush also replaces native plants both by direct competition and by altering the soil chemistry, further weakening the structural integrity of our dunes and destroying the complex habitat of native mammals and birds.

Infestations can smother sand dune, headland and coastal vegetation communities and many threatened species and plant communities have been affected.

Emergency Services Update Hawks Nest Accident ON the morning of Saturday 23 April the Pindimar/Tea Gardens RFS was called out to a motor vehicle accident on Mungo Brush Road.

A four-wheel-drive had hit a power pole snapping it off near the base.

This resulted in a power blackout across a large portion of Hawks Nest.

The Brigade stated that there were no occupants on scene when they arrived and so injuries are unknown.

Police Farewell On 22 April, Port Stephens Hunter Police District joined together to wish Senior Constable Hannah Wynne of the NSW Police Force (NSWPF) a goodbye.

Hannah joined the NSWPF in 2009.

She has been stationed at Northern Beaches, Prosecutions Command and has worked in the Port Stephens Hunter Police District since 2013.

The composition of this photo showed great flair and creativity on Mandy’s part.

A screen saver on the laptop was used as a background and a piece of shiny board was placed up

against the screen.

The board was sprayed with water to give it texture and reflect the screen image.

The toy car was then placed on the board.

The reflections and shadows matched the scene perfectly giving a sense of reality to the photo.

Mandy’s effort was highly commended by the Group Convenor, Paul Mulvaney.

THE NSW Government is helping veterans transition from the Australian Defence Force to the civilian workforce, in a win-win for ex-military members and local councils across the State.

Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott encouraged councils to embrace the skills of exmilitary members when recruiting for new staff.

“On the eve of Anzac Day commemorations we reflect on the service and sacrifice of our veterans and the crucial role they can play beyond the defence force,” Mr Elliott said.

“Our veterans are highly trained with core skills such as critical thinking and decision-making, leadership and teamwork, strong interpersonal

craft and free story times and book-related activities.

Progress Association Update DEAR residents, I AM pleased to advise that we have renewed the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Management Committee with Vice President Trevor Jennings, A/Treasurer Jeannette Hart, Treasurer Kay Jones, Secretary and Public Officer Sandra Bourke, and our experienced Management Committee members, Kath Verdon, John Verdon, Leigh Allen, Christian Patterson and Dan Holmes.

The team has met and is very committed to working together for the benefit of our community and environment.

Seniors Week was clearly a hit, and a big thank you to all.

We are hoping to apply for grants for similar fun community events in the future.

This month we also won another grant to upgrade the audio-visual equipment in the Hawks Nest Community Hall for all users.

We will keep you posted.

ANZAC Day was well supported and the PA donated books to the Tea Gardens Public School in lieu of a wreath.

Thank you for the support of this important day, especially considering current global unrest.

This month, on 19

April, I met with Mayor Claire Pontin, General Manager Adrian Pannuccio , and the Director Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

The purpose was to provide an update on the Progress Association and strengthen our working relationship and to progress a range of issues in our area, many of which are long standing.

I advised that we are in the process of updating our strategic plan based on member and community consultation.

I was advised the Local Community Plan tools were available online for our use.

Key strategic issues include overall traffic management, improving roads, footpaths and infrastructure, new and upgraded community hall and public spaces, optimising erosion management and dredging, ensuring compliance with current zoning, waste management, environmental care and compliance, plus preserving what makes our unique coastal and riverside villages so special.

I advocated for all this, in particular the issues summarised below: Tea Gardens Pontoon and Jetty: This has been delayed. MCC

has completed a redesign incorporating local input and will provide a written update to the PA (MCC Project 101448).

Tea Gardens Pool: The planned site access improvements will commence this winter (MCC Projects 101452 and 101455). The pool will remain closed until summer.

I highlighted that the early closure and inconsistent hours of operation in last season had adverse impacts on locals and visitors health and wellbeing. Note that a review of the MCC pool contract across the LGA is underway.

Hawks Nest Community Hall Extensions: The DA has been submitted with works on the demountable scheduled to commence mid-2022 (MCC Project 101725).

Providence Park: The amenities upgrade has been delayed due to weather and supply constraints (MCC Project 100798).

Winda Woppa Birdwatching Platform: Safe removal has been programmed ($10k Project 101725).

Traffic and Footpaths: This area has the oldest demographic in Australia yet most of

our area’s submissions to the PAMP have not progressed. Many of our traffic and footpath issues are long-standing and have been communicated to MCC many times with no action.

This includes the Singing Bridge issues.

Locals with access issues and/or mobility scooters remain forced to use damaged roads to access shops and services, placing their safety at risk.

The roads (in places) lack footpaths, gutters, and are seriously damaged.

These deficiencies will be compounded by the pending increase in residential numbers from developments such as Parry’s Cove. It was agreed that a Traffic Management Plan for TGHN was required and would be progressed.

Traffic Line Marking: This is outstanding for Marine Drive, parking spaces. It was agreed that this would be reviewed.

Parking: Discussions included the lack of a centre line on Marine Drive, lack of marking of car spaces, insufficient parking, HN congestion, and the terrible state of our beachside carparks (Providence Park, South Bennetts beach, Jimmies Beach access). In addition,

SEVENTY years ago, on May 7, 1952, the Australian Women’s Weekly ran a two page article entitled ‘Women Anglers’, telling the story of the Tea Gardens Ladies’ Fishing Club, formed the previous year as a social group for the local women who usually had full time jobs

the recent changes to the Coles carpark entry will cause the parking area to be grid-locked in busy times creating safety risks and driver frustration. MCC advised this change has been requested by third parties and the matter will be reviewed.

Myall Way and M1 Intersection: I advisedCouncil of the recent announcement by Dr Gillespie that flashing lights will be installed at the Myall Way/M1.

While not a Council responsibility, it was agreed that their support of this project and the construction of an overpass was important for safety and access and should be part of the pending local Traffic Management Plan.

General Maintenance: We discussed the lack of general maintenance evident in all our community spaces.

For example, dirty, broken and unpainted picnic tables, broken fences and retaining walls (Bennetts Beach), etc.

I was advised that the local Council depot does not appear to have a regular general maintenance regime resulting in disrepair. This will be reviewed. I advised that the HNTGPA was establishing an ‘About Town’ sub-committee to identify basic maintenance requirements and how we

could work with MCC and volunteers to improve this protracted issue.

So what next?

Clearly strategic planning is essential including identifying and prioritising our requirements and problems as well as what projects are needed to remedy them.

Some projects will require either Council or us to apply for grants, or even both.

Working with Council will be important.

Volunteer work in and around our community remains more critical than ever to get things done. We will continue to meet with the Mayor, Councillors and senior Council staff and keep them accountable.

Broad community support and involvement are important.

Council is hosting a Community Conversations Event in Tea Gardens on Wednesday 11 May, 6-8pm at the Baptist Church.

We hope you can be there to let Council know what our community needs.

We will also be starting guest speaker breakfast presentations on community issues hopefully at the Surf Club from May – more to follow.

It met fortnightly to decide on outings, fundraising and trophies which were usually awarded for the best catch of the day.

Fish were judged on one point per fish and one point per pound weight, with official captain and weigher-in being Tom Perrin, proprietor of the local boatshed (now the Boatshed Restaurant).

All the ladies were experienced fisherwomen who knew their fish, tides,

types of bait, lines and sinkers.

Some took their children and made a picnic of the day, but the keener fans did not stop for lunch.

As well as fishing from boats, beach and estuary fishing were included.

by Adelie Hurley.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

TUESDAY 19 April: The final of the Open Consistency Competition, Maynie Roberts v Lorraine Murphy.

This was a great final to watch, 29 ends bowled, that is 116 bowls delivered by each competitor before a result was achieved.

Maynie started strongly and continued to dominate this event, by the 6th she had a lead of 18 shots (39 v 21) and basically managed to stay in front by about 22 shots most of the game despite great bowling by Lorraine.

On what was to be the last end Maynie sealed her victory by gaining 9 points, winning 158 v 132.

Congratulations to both ladies on reaching the Final and a special “pat on the back” to Maynie as this is the 11th time she has won this Competition.

Social bowls played a game of 3 bowls Pairs 12 ends and 3 bowls Triples 12 ends.

The Pairs, Pam Gilchrist and Sheila Rattray v Loretta Baker and Lynda Richards ended in a 10 all draw.

Irene Roberts, Kathy Jones (visitor) and Pat Baker took home the money defeating Maureen Campbell, Jeanette Emmett and Sandra Leisemann 16 v 8.

Maureen Campbell won the raffle, thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the prize.

Thursday 21 April: Three games 3 bowls Triples 12 ends played.

A win to Bev Dunn, Kathy Jones and Sandra Leisemann 11 v Sheila Rattray, Judi Polak and Karen McPhie 6.

A great comeback by Pam Gilchrist, Sue Morris and Robyn Webster who were down by 7 shots on the 5th end against Deb Gardner, Bev Rhodes and Lynne Green, unfortunately they were the losers but just by 1 shot, the score 12 v 11. Dee Douglas, Lynda Richards and Dale Winter weren’t in the game until the 6th end when they finally won an end, scoring 1 point.

Their rivals Francis Betar, Maureen Campbell and Pat Baker were on 12.

Victorian era comic operas

By Annie RUTTER, Myall U3A FRANCES Brown thoroughly entertained the Myall U3A audience recently with a presentation about the Victorian era comic operas and partnership of the dramatist WS Gilbert (1836-1911), the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), and the works they jointly created.

Frances, who has performed in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, is a master of her subject and she relishes the opportunity to bring the audience close to the world of Gilbert and Sullivan.

She said she is intrigued by the whole landscape and theatrical contrivances of the performances and learnt a lot more about the operas by actually performing in them.

“Gilbert and Sullivan collaborated on fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known.”

The producer, Richard D’Oyly Carte brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and nurtured their collaboration.

He built the Savoy theatre in 1881 to present their joint works and founded the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company which performed and promoted Gilbert and Sullivan’s works for over a century.

Frances discussed the personal lives of Gilbert and Sullivan, who didn’t really like each other.

Each of them had imagined a much more illustrious future for themselves because of their individual talents, but ironically, the magic of their light operas still endures and they are still household names.

Frances pointed out that despite the

absurdity of the operas, English society is thoroughly satirised in the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, and the audience is delighted to be in on the joke.

By setting many of the operas in a foreign and delightfully bizarre landscape, Gilbert was able to freely lampoon English society.

Although 'The Mikado’ is set in Japan, we know it has nothing to do with Japan.

By removing the opera to a surreal and foreign location with loony characters, Frances explained how Gilbert was able to gleefully satirise English Society.

She pointed out the darker side of the operas.

For example, when The Mikado observes, “It’s an unjust world and virtue is triumphant only in theatrical performances.”

Frances explained that comic opera is what Gilbert and Sullivan called these shows.

However, they are not mere ‘light operas’, nor are they ‘operettas’ which are devoid of any shade of dark and that the genius of Gilbert and Sullivan still influences theatre today.

Frances also played scenes from the HMS Pinafore which opened in London in 1878 and ran for 571 performances.

Frances said that was the second longest run of any musical theatre up to that time.

The lyrics of the song ‘When I was a Lad’ clearly lampoon WH Smith, the newly appointed head of the English Navy who had never been to sea.

Fans of Gilbert and Sullivan always love those lyrics, which Frances says are still relevant today.

The Myall U3A would like to thank Frances for her thoroughly entertaining and illuminating talk on the life and works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Or is it a new independent party, with a budget that only allows for a few strategically placed billboards in remote areas?

Regardless, I have a question for you about this common area allegedly displaying an offensive political sign.

Do you assist your neighbour to maintain this common area?

Do you have a roster of who gets to trim the grass around the letter boxes and water meter?

Or do you leave this role entirely to your neighbour, in fact showing little interest unless it is to collect your mail or position your bin?

If it is the latter, I think it would be impolite to start throwing around your opinions in relation to any improvements or distractions, political or otherwise.

If, much like our political parties, you only show an interest when it directly affects your current needs, I think you should just keep quiet, and perhaps reflect on the requirement for ongoing attention and maintenance.

By John SLATER 20 APRIL Numbers were down at the Tea Gardens Men's Bowling Club this week for the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition with 39 bowlers playing on the greens.

The winners were decided by the highest winning margin for both the morning and afternoon games.

The morning winners were Mark Hair, Mick Hobin and Merv Mills.

The afternoon winners were Ron Berczelly, Bob Weir, and Garry Macdonald.

The Garden Eatery voucher went to John Slater, (first time).

24 April The April showers did not deter the Sunday bowlers this morning with a good turnout of players participating.

A heavy fall of rain, which had the Sunday bowlers running for cover, took out whatever pace left the grass green.

As a result, the finalists in the Club Major Pairs final slogged it out during the afternoon.

I thought it was running at about eleven seconds, but others thought it was more like ten.

Peter Gurney and Ross Barry opposed Chris Ross and Scott Fitzalan for the title.

There were some fine bowls played by both sides however the conditions did not favour close draw bowling with little “finish” and bowls had to be played with some weight right into the head.
