With almost all votes counted for the electorate, The Nationals’ candidate, current member Dr David Gillespie, has been declared re-elected with over 64.5 percent of the votes.

First-time Labor candidate Alex Simpson won approximately 35.5 percent of the votes, followed by Josephine Cashman (One Nation) and Karl Attenborough (Greens) with 7.8 percent and 7.4 percent respectively.

20 Years of Family Research THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group is celebrating its twentieth birthday this month, with an anniversary luncheon at the Tea Gardens Country Club on 29 May. Present and past members and anyone who is interested in family research have been invited to attend.

The group began when Margaret Munright and her husband Terry moved to the area from Sydney.

“I used to attend a similar group in Sydney, and when we moved up here we thought it was a good idea.

“Terry agreed with me, we put an ad in the paper and away it went,” said Margaret Munright.

From that initial ad in the NOTA in March 2002, twenty five locals turned up to the group’s first meeting in the Masonic Hall.

The original group leadership group was then formed; with Terry Munright as President, John Bieshevel as Secretary, Ernie Reid as Treasurer, Shirley Cox as Librarian, Jan Winn as Historian, and Margaret Munright and Lesley Turner as committee members.

Ever since, the group has dedicated itself to the research of family history, tracing members’ family lines through time and across the globe.

“We trace family histories worldwide,” said group Librarian Shirley Cox. “Wherever people come from, and as far back as they want to go.

“The research material that we have gathered is from all over, and it gives people a starting point to know where to go to find information.”

Shirley said the experience of family history research was different for everyone.

“Everyone has a unique family history, you can’t use the same techniques for everyone.

“However, it is amazing how many people find out they are related to other people here when they do the research,” Shirley laughed.

President Lesley Turner said it was a common misconception that the group just researched local families.

“People think it is just researching your own local family history, but it isn’t just where you are born, its genealogy and it is researching where your ancestors came from, anywhere in the world.”

Many incredible family stories have been uncovered by the group over the years.

“That is what keeps the group going,” said Shirley.

“Depending on your heritage, you can trace it back to William the Conqueror or Genghis Khan.

“We regale each other with our stories.”

Group members’ detailed research has also, at times, uncovered inaccuracies in the verbal histories and stories handed down from generation to generation in their families.

“You see all the family stories that weren’t quite true.

“Stories that were either embellished or kept very quiet,” Shirley said.

The research has allowed group members to add detailed and colourful elements to the official histories of their families.

One current member discovered their great-grandfather was a butter judge at the Royal Easter Show, while another member’s father had found success in banana competitions in Coffs Harbour; both small details they had never learnt from the family retellings of their loved ones’ lives.

Over the decades, the group’s research toolbox has changed significantly.

Today, a myriad of online options makes family history research easier than ever

before.

“Trove is a great tool, Births Deaths and Marriages, Ancestry.com, Find My Past; the list goes on,” said Secretary Judith Glover.

“It is interesting how it has changed over the years, originally we were using CD-ROMS of vital records, books, journals and the microfiche reader.

“Now you have so many resources,” she said.

Aside from supporting people to delve deep into their family histories, the group are actively involved in the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest community, regularly hosting and participating in an array of events.

The group also hosts regular workshops, supporting members to improve their research skills, and enriching their ability to tell the intricate stories of their forebears.

The group has also undertaken the mammoth task of raising the funds for digitising all past editions of the NOTA and submitting them to Trove to be enjoyed by future generations all over the world.

The opening up of Western Australia in recent months has been great news for many families, friends and tourists wanting to visit there, or to move freely throughout Australia. In other welcome news from the west, Western Australia is catching up to the rest of Australia by allowing separating de facto couples to split their superannuation in the event of a relationship breakdown.

There have been lengthy negotiations between the WA and Commonwealth Governments in relation to referral of legislative powers regulating de facto relationships in WA. A partial settlement has been reached and there will now be new laws allowing WA’s separating de facto couples to split their superannuation.

This is significant because superannuation is often a couple's biggest asset. The inability in WA to include it in the division

of property accumulated during a de facto relationship has disproportionately disadvantaged women, who retire on average with half the superannuation of men.

Prior to COVID, many local Hunter residents and their families travelled and worked for extensive periods in WA and if their relationship broke down whilst in WA, they were impacted

by WA’s laws. This change will mean de facto couples in WA will now have the same options as married couples when their relationships breakdown.

WA will be in alignment with the other states and territories, all of which have allowed superannuation splitting for de facto couples for many years.

Australia elects Anthony Albanese as 31st Prime Minister

By Tara CAMPBELL ANTHONY Albanese has been declared the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.

With votes still being counted, it has been determined that the Australian Labor Party has a large enough lead that Mr Albanese will replace Scott Morrison as the Prime Minister.

The son of a single parent who grew up in public housing, Mr Albanese has reached the pinnacle of his government career after 26 years in the parliament.

"It is an incredible honour," Mr Albanese told reporters after leaving his house to head to speak at a party event.

Mr Albanese said he hoped his story would inspire a future generation of Australian leaders.

"My mother dreamt of a better life for me, and I hope that my journey in life inspires Australians to reach for the stars.

"I want Australia to continue to be a country that, no matter where you live, who you worship, who you love or what your last name is, places no restrictions on your journey in life,” he said.

Anthony Albanese

entered politics in 1996 when he was elected as the Federal Member for Grayndler and in 2006 earned the title of Labor’s Shadow Minister for the Environment.

He eventually became Australia’s first Federal Infrastructure Minister and in 2013, under the new Rudd Labor Government, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and finally, unanimously in 2019, Anthony was elected as the new Leader of the Australian Labor Party.

Growing up, Albanese said that it wasn’t easy; being the first person in his family to finish school, let alone university.

“When I was about twelve years old, I helped to organise a rent strike that kept my mother's public housing property from being sold off to developers - a first step towards the world of politics.”

He got involved in student politics and aged 22, he was elected president of Young Labor, the party's youth wing, and worked as a research officer under the economic reformist government of Bob Hawke, Labor's longest-serving Prime Minister.

In 2021, a car crash nearly killed Albanese and he says that it changed his life.

“It made me absolutely determined to make a contribution to the country," he told the ABC. In preparation for the campaign, he lost eighteen kilograms and underwent a major makeover.

"With my son Nathan and our dog Toto, I live twenty minutes down the road from mum's old place.

“I love my community and I'm proud to represent them in our nation's parliament.

"My vision is an Australia where everyone has the opportunity to work and enjoys the benefits of a job, but not just any job- good, well-paying jobs that are safe and secure,” he said.

World leaders congratulated Mr Albanese on his election.

"I look forward to working with you as we reap the rewards of our comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, the AUKUS partnership and the unmatched closeness between the British and Australian people,” British Prime Minister Mr Boris Johnson said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the two countries as "being close friends" and said he was looking forward to tackling global issues together.

"I'm looking forward to building on that with you, moving forward with

progressive ideas, tackling climate change, and delivering results for people in both our countries," he said.

Albanese’s election sees the first change in power since 2013, where the last Labor Prime Minister Kevin

Council seeks feedback on key community plans DRAFT plans outlining projects and services to be delivered across the MidCoast during 2022-23, along with MidCoast Council’s draft annual operating budget, are now available for feedback until 8 June.

These plans are prepared each year to guide Council’s services and activities and outline how projects will be delivered, funded and resourced.

The annual and fouryear plans are developed to achieve the objectives identified as priorities for the local community in the Community Strategic Plan, which has also been reviewed this year.

“These documents guide our services and show what we are doing to make the MidCoast a better place to live, work and visit,” MidCoast Council General Manager Adrian Panuccio said.

“They set out the path we will take to delivering longterm improvements, projects and change.

“We are asking for the community to have a look at these documents and give us feedback. In doing so, you are helping to shape what we

deliver for you.”

Mr Panuccio said as well as delivering services such as road maintenance, repairs and upgrades, swimming pools, libraries, sporting fields, parks, gardens, and waste, water and sewer services, Council will also undertake a number of environmental, cultural and community projects.

“Over the coming year we will be developing strategies to establish the future direction for areas such as economic development, open space and recreation, and community preparedness.”

Major projects will include the expansion of the Hawks Nest Sewerage Treatment Plant.

“We will also be continuing our work on consolidating our MidCoast Local Environment Plan and Development Control Plan, reviewing our Integrated Water Cycle Management Strategy and implementing our Information Technology Strategy.”

The Information Technology Strategy has been developed to support a business transformation program which focuses

on making it easier to do business with Council.

Improving local and regional roads, improving development approval times, streamlining processes, and improving environmental performance are also major focus areas for Council in the coming year.

To work towards delivering on their commitment to zero net emissions Council will be installing solar power systems at Taree Waste Management Centre, Manning Point, Hallidays Point, Coopernook and Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plants.

Council will also be undertaking a landfill gas capture trial, starting a smart water meter trial to reduce water loss and transitioning our street lighting to renewable energy sources.

The budget for 2022-23, which forms part of the public exhibition, shows Council’s income and expenditure.

“In the 2022-23 year, Council will manage an income of $310 million, $104 million of which will be spent on our transport network, $87 million on water supply and treatment, $72 million

on sewer services and $35 million on waste services.”

MidCoast Council has made an application for an annual increase for our rates to be 2.25 percent for the 2022-23 year, which is consistent with the projections set out in Council’s Long Term Financial Plan.

This was prompted by the low-rate peg advised by IPART for all Councils in the State of NSW, 0.7 percent, adjusted with a population growth factor to 0.9 percent for the MidCoast.

As a result of a Statewide lobby by NSW Councils,

the State Government has advised that Councils can apply to IPART to increase rates for next year back to the level they have been budgeting for – to a maximum of 2.5 percent.

Eighty four percent of councils across NSW have applied for either the additional increase or have existing increases already in place above the 2.5 percent.

“More than just focusing on the year ahead, our challenge has always been looking after our infrastructure into the future; we will continue to work with elected Councillors to

balance this with meeting our community’s needs,” Mr Panuccio said.

RSL NSW President Ray James said these changes would have a positive impact on the operations of the sub-Branches and is encouraging the subBranches of the RSL NSW to incorporate.

“The passage of this amendment further demonstrates that the NSW Government is responsive to the needs of RSL NSW and its members,” Mr James said.

“The new laws will ensure that the RSL can focus its charitable funds on supporting veterans and their families.”

The new laws will reduce considerable expenses for sub-Branches

of RSL NSW, allowing the focus to be placed on supporting returned servicewomen and men.

“The NSW Government is committed to continuing to drive changes to ensure our veterans receive the best available support.

“If sub-Branches pursued the process of incorporation without this amendment, it could significantly deplete cash reserves, which in turn hinders charitable operations and support for local commemorations,” Mr Tudehope said.

The Government has also recently lodged its submission to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which acknowledged the enhanced role that RSL NSW and its sub-Branches could play in the future to provide localised supports for our servicemen and servicewomen transitioning to civilian life.

Fees slashed for RSL sub-Branches which are incorporating THE NSW Government has passed significant legislative amendments to enable RSL NSW subBranches across the State to improve their governance and accountability.

Following the passing of the Bill on Tuesday, amendments have been made to the RSL NSW Act 2018 which will see RSL NSW sub-Branches who are looking to reconstitute as companies limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act 2001, be exempted from duties that would be otherwise paid during the process of incorporation.

Minister for Finance and Employee Relations Damien Tudehope said the RSL NSW Amendment Bill 2022 will greatly assist in improving the governance and transparency of subBranches.

Freshwater Farm collaborate with Worimi artist

LOCAL Worimi artist Brittney Paulson has collaborated with Great Lakes Freshwater Farm to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

This week saw the celebration of a successful collaboration between Indigenous artist Brittney Paulson and Northern Beaches-based business Freshwater Farm, which farms in the Great Lakes region.

Earlier in the year, Brittney Paulson was given the chance to collaborate with Freshwater Farm to design imagery for a limited-edition hand wash and soap bar in which 20 cents from every item sold would be going to the charity.

Brittney created a beautiful piece called ‘Where the land meets the sea’, depicting the Great Lakes area on the Mid North Coast of NSW where Freshwater Farm is located.

On a rainy Sydney day, the sunshine briefly appeared when CEO and Founder Al Hutcherson presented a cheque for $26,600 to Indigenous Literacy Foundation representative Laura Atherden, with the help of Brittney Paulson.

Junior CWA Program LAST week a small group of Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) years 7, 8 and 10 students became Junior Members of the Bulahdelah Country Women's Association (CWA).

Students were nominated by their teachers and invited to participate in activities at one meeting per month q

This week the girls paid their $1 membership fee, learned the history of the CWA and the Bulahdelah Branch.

Four trapped after Tea Gardens crash

MULTIPLE persons were trapped following a vehicle incident at Tea Gardens last week.

The incident was managed by a multidisciplinary team, with members of the Port Stephens SES and the Tea Gardens Fire and Rescue Unit in attendance.

Port Stephens SES Unit was activated by Police to assist Fire and Rescue NSW Tea Gardens and the NSW Ambulance Service at an incident with a car on its side, with multiple persons trapped in the vehicle.

The SES unit responded with the Medium Rescue Vehicle and the Rapid Intervention Vehicle, along with seven accredited Rescue Operators to the scene, leaving the Heavy Rescue

Vehicle and six Rescue Operators on call for Port Stephens area coverage.

On scene, crews found a vehicle that had left the road, travelled across a ditch, impacted with a tree and flipped onto its side.

The two occupants in the vehicle were trapped by confinement and

“The students and ladies enjoyed getting to know each other, and the

girls are looking forward to their future meetings.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Passes in NSW

THE Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has passed in the NSW Parliament.

Co-sponsored by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Member for Newcastle Tim Crackanthorp, the Bill passed provides for and regulates access to voluntary assisted dying in New South Wales.

On Thursday, following a mammoth late-night debate, New South Wales became the final state in Australia to pass voluntary assisted dying legislation.

Six months ago the Bill passed the state’s lower house, and officially passed just after 12:30pm on Thursday May 19.

The Bill was spearheaded

by Independent MP Alex Greenwich with 28 cosponsors last year after a series of failed past attempts.

He said the bill marked a moment in which NSW “finally passed a threshold of honesty and compassion”.

“Honesty that not all people die well, and compassion that people with advanced and cruel terminal illnesses will have the same end-of-care options as those in every other state,” he said.

The Bill limits access to voluntary assisted dying to people with terminal illnesses who will die within six months, or twelve months in the case of a person with

a neurodegenerative condition experiencing unbearable suffering.

The person must be found to have capacity to make the decision to go ahead voluntarily without duress, and the application would be assessed by two medical practitioners.

Supporters had hoped the bill would pass on Wednesday night, but after a large-scale debate in which opponents moved some 90 amendments in a latenight filibuster attempt, it passed the upper house on Thursday afternoon.

One of the Bill’s opponents, the employee relations minister, Damien Tudehope, said the Bill “betrayed” people suffering from a terminal illness.

“Some will say this is a great moment for NSW,” he said.

“I will leave here today thinking this is a dark day for our state.”

Co-sponsor Kate Washington expressed her gratitude for the support of all those involved which supported the Bill.

“I cannot thank enough, Dying With Dignity NSW, Go Gentle Australia, my fellow co-sponsors and of course, Alex for raising the Bill.

“Today, New South Wales has become a more compassionate state,” she said.

Tudor History on display at Myall U3A

ALAN Barr is one of the most popular speakers at the Myall U3A, giving presentations on Tudor history which are full of detail, scholarship, and humour.

This month he satisfied the Myall U3A attendees' intellectual curiosity by throwing light on the causes and consequences of the Bubonic Plague in London in 1665/1666.

“During his talk, Alan made many comparisons between how the Plague was controlled in the 17th century and the handling of Covid during the last three years.

“Fortunately now we are aware of the dangers imposed by rats and the need for cleanliness,” said Annie

Rutter, Myall U3A. The year of 1666 fell during the reign of Charles the 2nd.

“It was a chaotic time and London was filthy and overcrowded,” Alan said.

“The concept of cleanliness was not known, and cities were a breeding ground for disease.

“So, when the disease which became known as The Plague, or the Black Death affected some of the population in 1665, it spread rapidly.”

Alan said the symptoms were extremely unpleasant, and it took only one week to develop.

People had no defence against such a disease and no understanding of how it was caused or how it spread.

It is a fallacy that rats spread the Plague, instead, the fleas which live on the rats did In the 17th century, it was thought that impure air (miasma) was the cause of the plague, and the prevention was a sponge soaked in vinegar.

Dogs and cats which were thought to be the cause of the Plague were consequently killed off.

Alan said the problem was that cats and dogs killed the rats which carried the fleas.

So, mistakes were made, just as they have been made in present times, trial and error in both eras!

With ‘The Plague Orders’, three groups of authorities were established to control the population and the spread of the disease.

general lockdown and large gatherings of people were prohibited, trade was suspended and the Scottish border was closed.

Hand washing was strongly recommended, and people had to isolate and report symptoms of the Plague as soon as they felt unwell.

Alan said that hackney coaches had to be thoroughly cleaned after each hire and had to be taken out of use for six days.

Alan pointed out that scientists did not find out for 100 years that fleas were the cause of the plague.

“It is interesting that simple measures like hand washing combated the black plague as they do COVID-19,” said Annie.

He said that although the Plague still exists today, it is easily treated.

TUESDAY 17 May: Format for social bowls a game of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends and a game of Pairs 18 ends.

Round one of the Club Championship Fours commenced two games contested, the other two teams participating in this Championship had a Bye. First to the Championship, Judi Polak, Bev Rhodes, Karen Green and Lynne Green started strongly and by the 9th end they held a lead of 9 shots (12 v 3) against their opposition Ingrid Luck, Sandra Leisemann, Maynie Roberts and Robyn Webster.

Robyn’s team made a comeback, the difference in score just four shots by the 15th end, 16 v 12.

The next three ends were won by Lynne’s

ladies, with just three ends left to bowl they were once ahead by 9 shots, 21 v 12, at this point this game could still be won by either team.

Despite winning the last three ends Robyn’s team didn’t gain enough points to win, ultimately losing by 5 shots 21 v 16.

The other game resulted in a win for Lynda Richards, Sheila Rattray, Karen McPhie and Robyn Beaumont v Wendy Jones, Pam Gilchrist, Kathie Rimmer and Loretta Baker after 16 ends Loretta’s team decided to declare.

At this point Robyn’s team were in front by 19 shots, 28 v 9.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club

IN the last pre-COVID National Bridge for Brains Competition, over 2000 pairs participated and two Members from Hawks Nest Bridge Club secured two out of the top four places coming first in the over 75’s section and second overall.

By anyone’s standards this was an awesome result.

So, compelling is the research from all over the world which has shown that it is a fact that bridge is good exercise for your brain as are social connections during later years of life.

Australia-wide, bridge players annually contribute about $40,000 to Neuroscience Research.

Bridge is for everyone, from all walks of life, all ages and physical condition.

THANKFULLY we live in a democracy where everyone's vote is equal (well,

such a sore loser that he refuses to accept

the result, much like a petulant child. And

allowing him to stay in power until 2036, something unthinkable in Australia.

Remind them, also, that they'll have

another opportunity in three years.

Maybe by then your donkey voters will

have decided to take their right to vote more seriously.

ON MONDAY 9 May, Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Primary students participated in the Zone Cross Country competition at Lakeside, Raymond Terrace.

Banjo Edwards was the best placed BCS student, coming fourth in the 11 year old boys.

“Congratulations Banjo on an awesome result!” said BCS Primary Teacher Jackie O’Connell.

“We trust that Banjo will continue to represent Bulahdelah Central School with pride at Regional.

“Congratulations, Banjo!"

Students were commended for their fantastic behaviour and sportsmanship on the day.

“Everyone tried their best on the day and we were very proud of everyone involved,” said Jackie.

“We all enjoyed the sunny weather which was a welcomed change.”
