By Tara CAMPBELL LOCAL businesses have been hit by the flow-on-effects of COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling to bounce back.

It’s no secret that COVID restrictions have impacted businesses, from QR Codes to COVID-safe plans, limited customers, lockdowns and uncertainty, local businesses have struggled to stay afloat, particularly in the Myall Coast region where many rely on tourist support.

Jenny Po is the manager of The Garden Eatery in Tea Gardens and throughout the lockdowns and pandemic last year, Jenny and her husband had to say goodbye to their business of 25 years - Billabong’s Restaurant.

“Six months into reopening after the lockdown, we learnt it was just too challenging to continue to run our business on such a large scale because the ‘normality' we were all hoping for was not returning anytime soon.

“It was extremely sad and hard for us at the time, as we had to let go of all of our team, and say goodbye to our local community whom we had such a strong connection with over the years,” Jenny said.

Other businesses are working towards maintaining the local industry in any way they can.

The Providence Deli, a Tea Gardens home based grazing and catering company, started trading last lockdown, with the idea of sourcing local as much as possible.

After a tough first year, they were looking forward to catering for many large weddings and parties booked in, but the newest restrictions and lockdowns meant that these events were cancelled or postponed.

“This forced me to re adjust my business from catering from big group gatherings to more home-made pre prepared meals and small sized boxes.

“I’ve had an influx of orders from loved ones from out of town sending boxes as a gift to our locals and I'm very lucky to be able to get that support and still be able to stay in business but there are so many of our local businesses that have taken such a hard hit and are in real need of local support and they need it now more than c NOTA Graphics - Ref: TGCC_MYALL_1982021_NEINA

Only leaving the house for essential food shopping can mean that driving is only necessary about once a week or so.

This can spell trouble when car batteries go flat without regular charging that would come from driving.

A car battery can ideally last for at least a fortnight without driving before it becomes flat, however if the car has an old battery, this can be shortened to a week.

MYALL COASTNews Of The Area q The primary location of the Flying Fox Plan Hawks Nest Flying Fox Camp. recent MidCoast Council meeting and resulted in amendments to the draft following feedback received.

The Hawks Nest Flying Fox Camp is on Council owned land and adjacent to residential areas.

It was first identified in the mid-1990’s and it has since grown.

The camp is seasonal and up to 5,500 flying foxes have been recorded at the site.

Council’s management plan will guide flying fox management at each camp, including reducing conflicts with nearby residents, while protecting important biodiversity.

The festival, which has become an annual event, will be running from 25 March to 3 April 2022 with ten days of activities across the state.

2022’s theme will be ‘Reconnect’, an ode to reconnecting after a socially and physically distanced year.

Activities for Myall Coast seniors from previous years have included Tai Chi, computer lessons, weaving turtle art workshops, seniors concerts, movie nights and Wetland open days.

Minister for Seniors, Natalie Ward said the 2022 festival would build on a strong legacy of showing NSW seniors of their value to the community.

Sporting schools program breaks record THE Australian Government’s $320 million Sporting Schools Program is helping more schools than ever before provide opportunities for children to get active and experience the joy of sport.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie encouraged schools across the region to register and apply for Sporting Schools funding and join the millions of Australian children benefiting from fun and free opportunities to get active through sport.

“The Sporting Schools Program can be an important first step to inspiring children to build healthy habits and develop a lifelong love of sport and maybe inspire a Brisbane 2032 Olympian.”

Seventy-five schools across the Lyne electorate shared in funding to run Sporting Schools programs in 2020, benefitting close to 58,500 students,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Many schools across our area have been part of the program already and we want to see as many of our children enjoying the benefits it can provide.

“Physical activity helps keep children healthy, happy and socially engaged, impacting positively on their intellectual capacity and

academic achievements,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Sporting Schools is about developing children’s love of sport from a young age, helping to increase their confidence and capability to be active for life.”

“Sport Australia works in partnership with more than 35 national sporting organisations to deliver quality programs to help school communities get moving.

FRRR and Suncorp launch $1 million disaster recovery partnership THE Suncorp Group has pledged $1 million to the Foundation For Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) for a dedicated program to support rural Australian communities impacted by significant natural disasters.

The first Rebuilding Futures program grant round opened last Thursday and will close on 15 September, with $200,000 available through grants of up to $15,000 each for local community groups and notfor-profits in remote, rural and regional areas impacted by flooding in March 2021.

Successful grants will be announced in November 2021.

with the Suncorp Group on the dedicated funding initiative.

“From our many years working alongside communities as they recover from natural disasters, we have learnt that recovery is a marathon and local community groups and not-for-profits need funding for diverse recovery initiatives, as their needs evolve over time,” Ms Egleton said.

Suncorp Group CEO Steve Johnston launched the first round of grants to help NSW and Queensland communities impacted by flooding in March 2021.

“These communities are dealing not only with COVID-19, but the significant

impacts of flooding,” Mr Johnston said.

“I’ve seen first-hand the devastation and emotional toll of natural disasters, which is why we are supporting affected communities to not just build back but to make themselves more resilient than before.

“As an insurer and bank our job is to help our customers to physically and financially rebuild, but we know the full recovery process continues for years after people are back in their homes.

“Through our long-term relationships with customers across Australia we see the importance of supporting wellbeing and the lasting value of a community’s spirit.

“Communities are best placed to steer their own future which is why these

grants empower locals to come together to identify and design local solutions.”

FRRR facilitates funding and capacity building at the local level.

It has the relationships and know-how to distribute grants to fund community-led solutions that build resilience and longterm viability of remote, rural, and regional communities across Australia.

“This program, with a focus on the medium to long-term needs and building back better, will mean that when there are significant disasters, the support will be available for local groups to address issues that are important to recovery, to rebuilding the sense of place that is often so badly damaged through events like the floods we saw in NSW earlier this year,” Ms Egleton said.

COVID Gear Change On Horizon

DELTA is on everyone’s mind.

It is separating us from our family and friends and this week we went into yet more restrictions with the lockdown in the regions extended until at least August 28.

The new restrictions in the regions include masking up with mask wearing now mandatory when outside your home, except when exercising.

People leaving Greater Sydney and travelling more than 50km now require a permit.

Tradies are also facing restrictions including travel bans and vaccination requirements and testing regimes with these varying depending on which area of Sydney they are based in.

PLENTY OF TIME BUT NO FUNDS? How can I update my home with minimal outlay?

IF you’re fairly happy with your home’s presentation but are looking to change things up a little, here are some lockdown projects with minimal financial outlay.

You can accomplish so much with so little! Firstly, new feature cushions cost very little, even less if you’re able to source some new zip-on covers for your current cushions. Remove tired window treatments or wash them for a refresh, if they are still in good condition and fashionable. Work with your room’s colour scheme and layer with textures and patterns to really make your room pop. Rugs are a wonderful addition without overwhelming the eye. They’re also a great distraction if you have problem carpet areas, or floorboards look a little too bare. For the cost of a tin of paint, roller and brushes, you may like to refresh with a coat of paint. Neutrals always work best, particularly if you are considering selling. I always say it’s the cheapest way to totally transform a home. And don’t forget your green friends. Strategically placed potted plants; hanging, floor, benchtop or windowsills go with any décor and happily fill awkward spaces. If you’re a known plant killer though consider the fake ones. There are some really fabulous imitation plants available these days that you need to touch before you realise that they are not actually real. Maybe you need to reduce ornamental clutter or too much furniture in your spaces. Sometimes simply re-arranging furniture makes a massive difference to a rooms look, feel and flow.

These simple things can give you a fresh new look with minimum outlay! Have fun!

Tenancy Support extended

By Cr Len ROBERTS Rural Strategy community exhibition period WORK is underway on preparing the Rural Strategy for community consultation, with letters going out to a range of landholders over the coming week to explain to specific groups what the implications of the draft strategy are in their particular circumstances.

Letters will be going to landholders in the following categories: • Tea Gardens and Minimbah aquifer catchments • Paper subdivisions • Rural to Village Mt George • Large Lot residential to Village Bundook • Village to rural at Newells Creek, Markwell and Bunyah • Village to environmental at Bulahdelah village high risk flood areas • Rural to environmental at Wingham peninsula and high-risk flood areas • Sensitive areas to E4 A range of fact sheets are being developed and online consultation being prepared.

The ebook collection grew by almost 20% in 2020/21 and in the same period the eAudio collection grew over 40%.

The library also provides access to independent movies and film through the Kanopy streaming service and to 3,500 eMagazines through the Libby database.

During the closure the Library has suspended its Click n’ Collect service to discourage the community from leaving their homes.

The Library will continue its home library service, under strict Covid-safe conditions.

We see that as providing support to vulnerable and isolated members of the community.

The closure has also given us the time to review some of the collection content at our branches, undertaking the equivalent of a spring clean.

$500,000 for local Landcare bushfire recovery projects

FOUR local Landcare bushfire recovery projects have been selected to aid in the recovery of native wildlife and habitat in seven regions severely impacted by the Black Summer bushfires - part of a $14 million Government commitment.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said Landcare Australia and the National Landcare Network are co-ordinating the projects which include Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare, ALL Sustainable Futures, Hastings

Landcare and Luskintyre Landcare Group.

“Our unique native plants and animals are already benefiting thanks to the on-the-ground efforts from Landcare and other community groups, but there is still work to be done.

“These new projects will build on the broad range of recovery activities already being carried out by Landcare and other community groups in the wake of the fires,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Our Government is

committed to the recovery of our wildlife and habitats – it is vitally important that we continue to do this work so that our native iconic species can return to their natural environments and thrive.

“Our local Landcare volunteers are perfectly placed to see the roll-out of this funding in our towns and villages that were affected during the Black Summer Bushfires,” Dr Gillespie said.

“These are part of more than 100 new projects that will not only directly

support native species recovery, but also provide benefit for bushfireaffected communities and landholders.”

To date, the Morrison Government has committed $200 million for wildlife and habitat recovery through the $2 billion National Bushfire Recovery Fund.

WORK will begin soon to widen the road and improve the pavement quality of a 1.4-kilometre stretch of Cowper Street at Stroud.

Kicking off on Monday 23 August, the project will begin with the relocation and replacement of the water main that runs along Cowper Street to make way for the improvements.

This is expected to take around seven weeks, weather permitting.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said residents would be impacted by changed traffic conditions and construction noise during this time, but work would only be undertaken between 7am and 6pm weekdays and access

would remain in place for residents.

“We understand any project that comes in close proximity to people’s homes is going to cause some level of inconvenience, but we want to try to minimise that as much as possible,” said Mr Scott.

“Nobody should experience any interruption to their water supply during this time, except for a short period when we connect the new main.

“However, we’ll make sure we provide residents with 48 hours’ notice before this happens.”

Following the completion of the water main relocation, work will continue into early 2022 to ensure motorists travelling along the busy thoroughfare enjoy

a smoother, safer driving experience.

“We’ll be widening the road by around three metres, resurfacing the pavement and adding curb and guttering near the intersection with Mill Creek Road,” said Mr Scott.

“This is going to be a vastly improved stretch of Cowper Street and we’re excited about delivering that to the Stroud community.”

Traffic control will remain in place throughout the duration of the project and some delays are expected.

Motorists are asked to follow instructions and drive to the conditions.

Bridge Club back online

AT the beginning of August members were able to play face to face bridge at the Hawks Nest Bridge Club.

Things seemed almost back to normal as Club members enjoyed being able to play in each other's company.

However it proved too good to be true, as soon

Covid-19 pushed everyone into lockdown again.

Fortunately, the Club has been able to transition to online games via Bridge Base Online.

The experience gained playing online in 2020 has stood Club members in good stead.

It is now very noticeable how online bridge games have

served a purpose when many planned tournaments have been cancelled.

Arrangements between the NSW Bridge Federation and Bridge Base Online means that several of the planned tournaments will now go ahead online, giving members of bridge clubs the ability to play in the congresses/tournaments.
