SES Heroics Praised

Plans for new sand buffer at Jimmys CONTINUED storm conditions have taken a toll on Jimmys Beach and MidCoast Council will work next week to establish a new sand buffer before the winter storm period begins.

Council has continued to keep a close eye on the erosion hotspot as consistent storm conditions continued throughout summer with plans in place to restore the sand buffer at the pinch point, using 5,000 cubic metres of sand from the Winda Woppa stockpile.

“It’s important that we undertake replenishment of the beach each year before the winter storm period begins and the erosion risk increases,” explained Robert Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services.

Jimmys, we’ve had more storms than usual throughout summer, which is generally when the sand naturally builds on the beachfront.

“With the Easter holiday period approaching, we are bringing forward targeted replenishment in the worst spot at the pinch point.

“This will provide a good beach profile through the holidays and provide protection from further storms that are predicted.”

Hawks Nest locals will need to follow the

signage in place as trucks and excavators work on and around the beachfront, with work expected to take place from Monday through to Friday.

“The plan is to manually place the sand onto the beach along the Boulevarde, between Guya Street and Kururma Crescent,” explained Rob. “This type of targeted sand replenishment is part of the beach management program for Jimmys Beach and will allow us a buffer until we undertake a major sand transfer campaign using the pumping system that we

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said the storms and floods have caused widespread damage across the impacted council areas.

“This is a serious event with heavy rainfall, severe winds and widespread flooding, resulting in a high number of flood rescues, damage to roads and properties and a large-scale, multi-agency response led by the NSW SES,” Minister Littleproud

said.

“Through the DRFA, a range of practical assistance measures are now available to help people get back on their feet and help councils get on with the clean-up and repairs to infrastructure.”

New South Wales Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said communities experienced significant disruption due to heavy rainfall and flooding over several days, including damage to and closure of roads and schools.

“As NSW continues to deal with this serious weather event, today’s announcement will help reassure those already affected that there is assistance available to cover the costs associated with the operational response and support households, small businesses, primary producers, not-for-profit organisations and councils as they continue to repair the damaged,” Minister Elliott said.

reported seeing floodwaters cut off roads, power outages, and vehicles becoming stuck in deep water.

NSW Incident Alerts Facebook page issued a warning last Friday of possible flooding along the Myall River at Bulahdelah.

Markwell Road was well under water and could not be driven on.

At Battlers Bridge, waters had risen so far that they were touching the bottom of a Give Way sign.

Bulahdelah resident Johanna Conroy luckily had a backup plan when her property lost power and she wanted to catch up on her TV show.

“We lost power for two and a half hours but we pulled out the generator and could still use the internet and watch 007 on Stan!”

Fellow resident Maddie Harvey reported a car

caught in water, with the stranded driver sitting atop their stricken vehicle.

James Dalton, another resident of Bulahdelah, reported flood waters blocking access to his father’s property on Kestevens Road.

His father’s dingo-mix dog Danny, however, was content to pose for a photo while sitting in the water.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts that the heavy rainfall and extreme weather will

continue into this week.

Residents are urged to keep up to date on current weather warnings via the Bureau of Meteorology and NSW Incident Alerts Facebook pages or websites.

Residents are also warned not to walk, ride or drive through flood waters, bearing in mind that it only takes 15cm of flood water to carry away a small car, and floodwaters often have a fast-moving current with hazardous debris. q

Rainfall Statistics IT doesn’t take a meteorologist to realise the Myall Coast and Port Stephens regions saw a lot of rainfall in the past week or so, but how

much did we actually get?

Tea Gardens resident Geoff True’s rain gauge recorded 535 millimetres in 5 days, close to 40 percent of

the mean annual rainfall for the area.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, from Thursday 18 March 2021, to the time

of writing (Monday 22 March 2021 at 1pm), the weather station at Williamtown RAAF recorded 331 millimetres (mm) of rainfall.

This included a peak of 96.4mm on Friday 19 March.

Prior to this period of consistent rainfall, Williamtown had experienced

69mm of rainfall from March 1 to March 18.

The mean (average) rainfall for March at the Williamtown RAAF is 120mm.

In Nelson Bay, 539.6mm of rain was recorded in the first 20 days of March, with 457.9mm recorded in just three days between 18-20

March.

This included a peak of 202.5mm on Friday 19 March.

At the Stroud Post Office, 233.4mm has been recorded for the month to date, including 106.8mm on Friday 19 March, The mean rainfall for Stroud in March is 145.6mm.

Spearfisherman reunites with rescuers

A SPEARFISHERMAN has reunited with the officers who saved him from the ocean after being separated from his boat and circled by a bull shark in Port Stephens.

After experiencing an engine problem, the boat drifted from the spearfishermen before the skipper on board – a friend of the pair – let off a flare.

Senior constables Glen Young and Nick Leach from the Port Stephens Marine Area Command found the boat and picked up the skipper before commencing a search for the stranded spearfishermen.

Senior Constable Nick Leach said they were searching for the men in difficult conditions.

“The wind had got up so there were whitecaps on the water, so finding a couple of divers in the water was pretty hard, like finding a needle in a haystack.

“They’re dressed in camouflage gear,” said Senior Constable Leach.

The men, aged 36 and 28, were attempting to swim about five kilometres to shore and had been circled by a bull shark before being found by police about 4.25pm.

“I looked up and saw the red and blue lights and the relief and gratitude I had then.

“I thought, I need to get on that boat, especially after seeing the shark,” said Matty Smith.

“Had the officers not arrived, the thoughts I was having were either: with it being dusk and the sun going down, potentially a shark attack or probably one of us potentially drowning,” he said.

Senior Constable Glen Young said it was lucky they found the men when they did.

“They were quite exhausted when they got on the boat. I think they only would have had another hour in the water before they maybe would have possibly drowned,” said Senior Constable Young.

THE Myall U3A Photography Group have selected their 'Example of the Set Subject Photograph' for March, a late evening photograph of Myall Lakes by group member Anita Catharell.

Each month the Group selects a photograph to highlight in Myall Coast News Of The Area.

The Set Subject for the month of March for the Myall U3A Photography Group was "My Local Area".

"For me this was a photographer's dream as our area offers some amazing photography opportunities,” said photographer Anita Catharell.

“I headed out to the beautiful Myall Lakes in our National Park.

“I left late afternoon to set up for a sunset shot but I found the light just before sundown

stunning, as it reflected on the banks of the Lake.

“The reflections of the trees in the water and the colours were lovely.

“As I was setting up for the shot I spied a little circular home in the reeds in the banks that intrigued me.

“I took the shot and called it ‘Is Anybody Home’.

“Just look at the mid right hand side of the photo in the reeds and you will see the little circular home. Enjoy."

SES Heroics Praised

NSW SES Units from around the state sprang into action last week to protect their communities from the dangers of heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters.

It was no different on the Myall Coast, where volunteers from the Stroud SES Unit have been praised for their heroics.

The Stroud SES Unit serves Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Bulahdelah, North Arm Cove, Stroud, and the surrounding areas.

“I would like to pay credit to the volunteers at the Stroud SES unit,” said Steven Lawrence, NSW SES Community Capability Officer.

“They have done an outstanding job over the last week completing flood rescues, coordinating evacuations, attending to storm and tree damage jobs.

“They are only a small Unit, but they are punching well above their weight.”

The majority of rescues on the Myall Coast resulted from people getting trapped in their homes by rising floodwaters.

“Most rescues were for people who were inundated while in their house.

drive through flood water or anything like that,” Mr Lawrence said.

In one notable rescue, Stroud SES volunteers responded to Bulahdelah locals Paul and Julie on Saturday morning.

Paul and Julie were grateful to be rescued from their property which became surrounded by floodwater.

After arriving home on Friday night along a slightly muddy road, Paul and Julie awoke Saturday morning to water up to their car’s window.

Unit Commander Greg, proceeding downstream for about a kilometre through trees to pick Paul and Julie up.

On Saturday night, flood technician Garry rescued Bulahdelah local Diana and her beloved Irish wolfhound Gilly after water became very close to inundating their home.

At the time of writing, the situation on the Myall Coast is still developing, with major flooding on the Myall River at Bulahdelah, where an evacuation order is in place for low lying parts of the town.

“With further rain expected to fall over the next two days (Tuesday and

Wednesday) we don’t expect that the Myall River will go down any time soon, so that is an ongoing situation,” said Mr Lawrence.

“There are no people currently presenting at the evacuation centre at Bulahdelah which means people are managing which is great.”

Mr Lawrence also praised the positive attitude towards community safety on the Myall Coast, and urged locals to stay vigilant to risk.

Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Community Report

FOR the first time in 12 months, both the Progress Association and the Southern Reference Group were able to conduct full meetings during the past month and we welcomed a good roll-up for both.

The PA was able to conduct their normal meeting and held their AGM, which had been deferred due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Existing committee members stood down and the majority saddled up for another year, with Len Roberts staying on as President.

It was very pleasing to have a number of new and younger members also stand for the committee, giving the Association a full complement.

They will bring fresh ideas and we can look forward to an interesting 12 months.

My recent NOTA article addressing Council shortcomings was answered by the Council GM, giving a detailed response to each of the issues.

Unfortunately, we are unable to present you with a copy, as Council wishes to respond through their Media Dept.

We can advise the

response was positive and to touch on a few of the topics, the Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) will be presented at the Council meeting in April.

We can also advise that the Council accept the footpath lanes on the Singing Bridge are too narrow and are studying concepts to fix the problem.

They are seeking public input into the design of the replacement boat ramp in Apex park and are holding a “community pop-up” onsite on Wednesday 7 April in order to allow the community the opportunity to have their say. The response covers most of the other topics which we must leave to the Media Dept.

Again, the Committee has been active over the past month, with the ladies working group doing a great job on the Community hall garden in Hawks Nest.

They are liaising with the Lions Club on other projects needing work, such as the Tea Gardens Cemetery garden and the mosaic wall on Bennetts Beach.

The request for warning lights on the Highway, prior to the Myall Way turnoff, was made some time ago to Transport NSW, through our State Representative, Kate Washington and we have had no reply.

It makes one wonder why a decision would take so long, considering it is a relatively cheap stop gap solution to a potential traffic disaster.

The Myall River Action Group was host to an area manager of a new Government Agency known as Maritime Infrastructure Delivery Office, or MIDO. The community will be aware of the myriad Government Agencies involved in achieving a dredging program within State waters and has been an advocate for a single authority.

MIDO has been formed as an initial step and is a combination of Maritime Services and Crown Lands.

Staff have been selected from both agencies and responsibilities are divided into two sectors, north from the Hawkesbury River and south to the Victorian Border.

At this stage, their jurisdiction is in moorings and dredging of navigational waterways.

The Council sponsored Southern Area Reference Group (SARG) was able to meet for the first time in 12 months. Much ground needed to be covered and to record only a few: • Suggested 40Km speed limits along Marine Dr and The Boulevarde

have been rejected by the Traffic Committee as being unnecessary.

• Parking lines between Maxwell and Ogden Sts need to be done.

• The Council owned block of ground along Myall Way will not be developed as a car park until funding is obtained.

• Council designers are working on a plan to repair

and upgrade the Moira Pd boat ramp.

• The proposed river clean-up will have to be postponed again, due water discolouration.

• North Arm Cove residents request for free green waste disposal is likely to be rejected.

• The replacement viewing deck at Winda Woppa has been costed at over $50K

The Great Art Treasure Hunt THE Great Art Treasure Hunt is a free and fun activity for the Easter holidays, being conducted by the Galleries in the Gardens not-for-profit art group.

It’s easy to join in – the basics just involve taking a walk while keeping an eye out for this lucky little fish Treasure Card, pictured.

Each day, between 10am and 2pm from Saturday April 3 to Sunday April 18 (not including Tuesdays), the Treasure Card will be placed strategically within view somewhere along the Tea Gardens waterfront.

Your job is to go for a stroll (it's great exercise too) and see if you can find it!

Then take it straight to

The Gallery and make your choice of one of the many, specially-created artworks by our local Galleries in the Gardens artists.

A notice will go up in The Gallery garden each day when the card has been found.

Prizes are now on display at The Gallery, which is at 81 Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, diagonally opposite the ferry wharf and in the waterside café strip.

WITH record breaking flooding across the MidCoast over the last few days isolating communities and causing havoc to infrastructure, Council crews were on the ground on Monday attending to emergencies and closures across the road network.

Widespread flooding across the Council area placed pressure on the already vulnerable road network and

a number of other services are impacted as a result of the conditions.

“Our staff have been working around the clock on road closures and assessments, but limited accessibility is making it difficult to understand the full extent of the damage,” General Manager Adrian Panuccio said.

Council services update areas our focus will be on securing essential access and then assess damage so we can prioritise repair work.”

Members of the community who wish to report issues should do so via Council’s website or by calling 7955 7777.

Waste services have also been impacted but Council say all MidCoast Waste Facilities will open as normal

from Monday 22 March.

“We know access to waste management centres will be a priority for our community once they are able to start to clean up and transport waste,” Mr Panuccio said.

“As a result we have worked to ensure that all of our waste management facilities will be open as normal from today including the Gloucester facility, road

access permitting.”

To assist residents impacted by the floods and widespread power outages, Council is allowing food waste from flood damaged premises to be disposed of at waste management centres free of charge, due to the public health risk.

Kerbside collection services are to be undertaken as normal from Monday, where road conditions and access permits.

Residents who have lost

their bins in the flood event can call Council on 7955 7777 to organise a replacement.

Council services that will be operating as normal include: • Customer Service Centres • Garbage collection – road condition and access permitting • Waste Management Centres • Libraries – Tea Gardens, Stroud – normal operating hours.

Tour de Cure Rides Through Bulahdelah

BULAHDELAH recently hosted a crew of bike riders from Tour De Cure with the Bulahdelah Community Hall being used for a comfort stop on their way to Sydney from Forster.

A sea of bikes with riders decked out in red descended on the town, all pedalling their way to making a difference.

John Lees told News Of The Area, “Originally they planned to stop at Bulahdelah and use the facilities at Wade Park but the inclement weather meant they needed a space to use should it start to rain.

“I was approached by

one of the riders Anthony Carelli who asked if they could use the Men’s Shed, unfortunately the Men’s Shed doesn’t have the capacity to hold 30-50 people at a time so I suggested to use the hall.”

The Hall committee were very receptive to the riders using the hall, which was opened from 9.30am -12.30 for the riders use.

Riders came through the facility in groups of 30 at a time and then rode on to Sydney.

Bikes were parked in the rotunda out of the weather as the riders refreshed themselves and recharged ready for the next leg in the arduous journey.

Through these cycling events, vital funds are raised for the game-changing cancer research, support and prevention projects that will bring the dream of a world without cancer closer to reality.

It helps families and children in need from every suburb and town across the country with Variety assisting families to gain mobility, get out and about in the community, communicate, play, achieve independence and increase their self-esteem.

Go On” attitude is front and centre after a postponement in 2020 due to COVID-19.

The Variety Breakwater to Beach 4WD Adventure is coming to the Mid North Coast with around $300,000 in donations and spending will be injected into the mid north coast when Variety’s Breakwater to Beach 4WD Adventure visits five key towns next week.

Variety 4WD Adventure

This extraordinary, bespoke vehicle will give the students access to their community and educational opportunities previously unavailable to this small, regional school.

event with the gift of over $5,000 worth of items to help in their self-sustainable garden including a luxurious chook pen.

The Variety 4WD adventurers will also be stopping in at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to make a donation.

Part and parcel of being part of the event is fundraising and thanks to the efforts of the entrants, Variety has set its sights on amassing $200,000 to further help kids in need.

“During COVID we had an 80% downturn in our business because we could only do takeaway.”

The Easter break is normally a time when business turns up for local hospitality.

With the damaging weather seen recently in the area this scheme may be more important than ever.

Dear Jasminda, I recently made a negative comment about someone jet skiing in the duck pond during the floods and now I'm apparently a whinger. I was concerned about the safety aspect and flood water whooshing into houses, but instead I am one of those people who can't have a bit of fun.

TO ROOF OR NOT TO ROOF! I’ve discovered my roof is leaking.

I am placing it on the market.

What do I do?

DURING this extremely wet weather event we are currently experiencing, it has brought to light the properties where the roof needs attention.

I always advocate that when you are preparing to go to market you attend to all the little repairs and maintenance jobs that are outstanding. That way, when buyers walk through your home, they won’t be overwhelmed by things that need to be completed or repaired. Even if those items are only small insignificant jobs, they could be enough for an already nervous buyer to feel completely overwhelmed and walk out with no intention of buying. Now a new roof is a big ticket item. Like a kitchen or bathroom that needs replacing, a new roof can be a very costly affair. Sometimes though the roof doesn’t need replacing. Get a qualified tradie to inspect your roof if it is leaking. It may just be that some of the screws are loose, or that one sheet of iron needs replacing etc. Regardless, leaking roofs scare off buyers. If they still do want to purchase, after finding out that the roof leaks, then you may find that they want you to reduce the price of the property considerably.

So if you have a roof that is leaking, have it inspected, then repaired or replaced. This will ultimately lead to a much faster sale, more thank likely a higher sales price achieved and a happy buyer. I hope this helps Denise

With all the rain we had experienced over summer I thought the grass green was going to be a touch heavy, but Steve Green worked his magic again and it was excellent to play on.

Little did we know of the rain yet to fall!

The winners on 22 points were Bob Peady, Ron Rowe and Doug Naylor The lucky losers on 19 points were Tom Short. Dennis Ashbridge and Geoff Muggleton Mike Delacca won the ‘Garden Eatery’ voucher, lucky man.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

By Lynda RICHARDS UNFORTUNATELY not much to report on, regarding lawn bowls this week.

On Tuesday 16 March Grade 4 Blue played against Nelson Bay. One team having a win the other a loss ultimately a side win Tea Gardens 43 v Nelson Bay 33, 4 points to be added to our tally.

Grade 4 Yellow travelled to Cardiff, both teams losing by a small margin 38 v Cardiff 42.

Grade 2 had a tough game against Soldiers Point, 1 team were still in with a chance on the 15 March end with Soldiers Point just 1 shot ahead but the next 6 ends were convincingly won by Soldiers Point our team eventually

losing by 12.

Soldiers Point winners on the day 47 v 21.

No bowls/Pennant games played on Thursday 18 due to rain, dates yet to be determined as to when these games will be contested.

Weather permitting on Thursday 25 March Grade 2 bowl at home v Lemon Tree Passage, Grade 4 Yellow v Karuah at Karuah and Grade 4 Blue travel to Stockton to play Stockton Red. All teams have games on Monday 29th March both Grade 4 teams have home games and Grade 2 will be at Kotara.

Tuesday 30 March a Bye for Grade 2, Grade 4 Yellow go to Cardiff and Grade 4 Blue home game v Nelson Bay.

Dear Mary, There are some people who take on a natural disaster as a personal invitation to be a risk taker and others who do what the SES and emergency broadcasts tell them to. The fact you are the latter doesn't make you a whinger, but someone with a bit of common sense. There are clear directives for what to avoid during floods -- water over the road, non-essential travel and so on, and certain safety measures such as sandbagging or moving items to higher ground in the event of a flood. For others, though, a flood somehow beckons them to dust off their kayaks, windsurfers, surfboards and (godhelp-us) jet skis and use them as mobility devices on flooded roads and retention pits for water runoff. There, floating along with sewerage from people's overflowing septics and dangerous tree limbs and mud, you will find Garry doing a bit of impromptu paddle boarding or Kim lolling around on a blowup flamingo without a care in the world.

Next to them voyeurs in cars ignore water across the road so they can create waves and make impromptu videos of people's homes going under. What fun. Then there's parents videoing their kids who are slowly sinking in what looks like quicksand in flooded beach car parks. Boys will be boys, they laugh.

To have this desire for self-gratification over the health and safety of others, including rescue workers, is truly mind boggling. If that makes you a whinger, Mary, then I think we should all take a leaf out of your book.

Phase 1B Vaccine Rollout MORE than 1,000 General Practices, including those across the Hunter Region will join the COVID-19 vaccination program from this week.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said services supporting the Phase 1B Vaccine Rollout would come online from 22 March.

Phase 1B includes vulnerable groups, such as older people and people with certain underlying medical conditions.

In Tea Gardens, the vaccine will be accessible at Ochre Health Medical

Centre Tea Gardens.

Across Port Stephens, the vaccine will be available at Raymond Terrace Respiratory Clinic, Stockton Surgery, Soldiers Point Medical Centre, Salamander Medical Centre, Tilligerry Medical Practice and Central Health Alliance in Williamtown.

“We all know the invaluable work our local GP’s do for our community, now we will see them play a vital role in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout,” said Mr Gillespie.

Sewer network issues AS a result of the heavy rainfall across the region last Thursday and Friday, MidCoast Council’s sewer network became inundated with stormwater.

While the network itself is functioning effectively, the amount

of water in the system is causing a number of issues.

Sewer overflows occurred at a number of locations across the local government area with some overflow relief gullies overflowing outside some homes.

In some instances,

people may have been experiencing drainage issues with their sinks, showers and toilets.

“We’re currently doing everything we can to keep the network running effectively,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services,

THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club held a Members Car Show on Saturday March 13, the day previously reserved for their Annual Community Aid Motorfest.

This popular event was unfortunately cancelled due to uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Club members with their cars gathered at a magnificent Pindimar property to celebrate the ongoing success of the Motor Club and, along with enjoying lunch and the car display, discuss plans for future outings and Club organised events.
