“Yes, some returning soldiers marched in battalion formation as they embarked from HMAS Sydney in their home port States. “Many, many more, like National Servicemen, doctors and nurses, were more likely to be flown into Sydney Airport on a late-night journey, then dispersed among their waiting families, or wait hours for a connecting flight or train ride home.
In 1987, following the belated but successful Welcome Home parade for Vietnam veterans in Sydney, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. The day is for the community to pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war and in peacekeeping operations.Wreaths for fallen were laid by Mrs Annette Taylor and Mrs Lois McShane as well as representatives of our Australian Defence Forces: Navy, Army, and Air Force. Mr Terry Munright gave a stirring recitation of the Ode, The Commemoration of the Fallen.Thank you to Mr Ross Barry, Mr Kevin McInerney, Mr Uwe Zeil (audio), members, and all others who volunteered on this day. Murray, summarised as, “The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th Century. “The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war.
Mr Murray, also referenced a memoir from veteran, Mr Bob Freshfield, who wrote, “Not for us, the march down capital city streets. “Not for us, the bands playing, or the flag waving, and the sounds of a cheering throng.
“The manner of our homecoming affected the way in which we Vietnam Veterans recovered from the war, those who arrived late at night to no fanfare and the seeming indifference of the military had more trouble adjusting to life at home than did those whose return was more public and who had had the benefit of a couple of weeks, debriefing and unwinding on board HMAS Sydney, with those they had served with, before reaching Australia.”
“By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. “Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were“Thewounded.Battleof Long Tan was fought on this day the 18 August 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan.
“The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops.“The battle was fought in wet and muddy conditions during a heavy tropical downpour. THE NSW Police Force response to rural crime in the Myall Lakes will be bolstered with one new Rural Crime Investigator position in the Manning Great Lakes Police District as part of the biggest increase in police numbers in more than 30 years across NSW.Rural crime costs millions of dollars each year, with theft of livestock, produce and equipment, illegal shooting, trespassing, and other crimes affecting people’s livelihood andMemberwellbeing.
“These investigators have lived and worked on the land, and play a critical role in building positive relationships between police and the farming community, as well as supporting victims of crime” Mr Bromhead said. “It is fantastic to see this unit double in size at our local police district as the NSW government continues to invest in regional NSW.” Myall Lakes will receive two of the ten new Rural Crime Investigators positioned across the state. This will boost the total number of Rural Crime Investigators across the state to 53.Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the positions deliver on the NSW Government’s $583 million commitment to community safety through the roll-out of 1,500 extra police positions over four years.“Rural crime specialist investigators focus on a range of crime, whether it’s theft of stock, grain or wool, rural arson and fraud, firearm offences, cruelty to animals or trespassing,” Mr Toole said. “These crimes affect farmers, their families and entire livelihoods, so it’s critical we have the support and resources needed to ensure regional communities continue to Detectivethrive.”Chief Inspector and head of the Rural Crime Prevention Team Cameron Whiteside said the new positions would make a significant difference to the way police supported rural communities.“Manyof our current investigators have worked on the land themselves for years, so they can very much relate to farmers who need our help,” Detective Chief Inspector Whiteside said. “Whether it’s investigating cattle theft or a case of animal cruelty, the services that these investigators provide to the community are extremely diverse and unique. “With our regional communities growing, the NSW Police Force is now better equipped than ever to prevent and respond to rural crime.”
A LANDMARK new initiative will help firefighters and farmers work together to better protect communities in regional and rural NSW from bush fires and grass fires. The NSW Government has unveiled a first-of-itskind Operational Guide for the use of Farm Fire Units. These units are privately owned and operated by landholders and consist of a vehicle-mounted water tank, pump and hose, and the freshly announced guidelines will ensure a more integrated approach to firefighting alongside the RFS.Minister for Agriculture Dugald Saunders said it is important to harness the local knowledge and skill of private“Farmerslandholders.areoften the first responders to grass fires and they understand the risks and seriousness of operating machinery in hot, dry conditions,” Mr Saunders said.“These new guidelines will provide another layer of assurance for landholders in remote parts of the State whose properties are significant distances away from their nearest town.”

New Tech To Save Heart Attack Victims
“The cardiac notification platform assists with the transfer of clinical observation data from ambulances and regional hospitals to tertiary hospitals so we can provide more rapid and effective treatment to patients with suspected heart attacks.”Hopefully for patients that live in regional and rural areas this new technology will be a game changer in saving lives. In addition to the more than $55 million cardiac care package for NSW Ambulance, the NSW Government has invested $150 million over ten years (2018-2028) in cardiovascular research in NSW.
Mr Morgan said the new cardiac notification platform would help streamline the transfer of patients from ambulance into hospital by improving communication between emergency departments and clinicians.

“These devices give patients the best possible chance of staying alive, by supporting our highly trained paramedics to provide the best life-saving care from the minute they arrive at the patient’s side through to when they reach the hospital.” Every year about 20,000 Australians, including 8,000 people in NSW, suffer cardiac arrest out of hospital –making it the most common cause of death among adults. Just one in ten will survive.NSW Ambulance Chief Executive Dr Dominic Morgan said NSW Ambulance had worked with practising clinicians to develop the cardiac care package to ensure it provided the most effective tools for responding to patients suffering cardiac arrest.“The Lucas CPR devices are a game changer as effective chest compressions are very hard to maintain for long periods, or when a patient is being moved down a flight of stairs to the ambulance, for example.

Last Minute Father’s Day Animal Adoptions STUMPED for the perfect gift for the man that has everything this Father’s Day? q Ronald the wombat. q Erol the Possum.

By Marian SAMPSON STUMPED for the perfect gift for the man that has everything this Father’s Day? Jump online and visit Port Stephens Koala Hospital and give Dad the gift of supporting a living breathing wombat or possum! Giving Dad this gift doesn’t mean he has to clean up after an animal, but he will feel the pride and joy of supporting our native animals in care. Erol, one of the native animals available for adoption, is an adorable twoyear-old brushtail possum who loves everybody –especially those who give himHecarrots!was rescued by a member of the public in Charlestown and taken to the fabulous staff at the Koala Hospital, where it was discovered that Erol had a major wound and a fractured leg which makes it hard for him to get around. Koala Hospital carers give Erol pats and cuddles and feed him “native browse” as well as a small amount of fruits and vegetables. Erol’s future is uncertain, it is not yet clear whether he will be strong enough for release or if the Koala Hospital will be Erol’s home for a while due to his age and injuries. Also up for adoption is Ronald, an orphaned wombat who is around eighteen-months-old and a truly fun character. What happened to Ronald’s mother is unknown. Ronald has a bottle once a day and is now eating fresh grass, chaff pellet, fresh hay root veggies and leafy greens.IfRonald keeps eating like this he will be 40kg when he is fully grown! Again for Ronald, like many of the native animals in care, the future is uncertain. Of course you can give Dad a koala for Father’s Day too, but if he is already a sponsor of a koala perhaps he would enjoy caring for moreManyanimals.of Australia’s native animal populations are under stress after the Black Summer Fires. Your Father’s Day gift could make a very real difference.Sorather than settling for socks and jocks that Dad really doesn’t need, give him the best gift ever - give life and hope to wildlife in need at the Port Stephens Koala Hospital.

SEVEN, 7pm It’s funny how tastes can change. A little more than two years ago, this show disappeared after a lacklustre season that failed to whet viewers’ appetites. Now, with a new set of judges and guests including Brit cooking queen Nigella Lawson, former MasterChef Matt Preston (right) and the charismatic Curtis Stone, this season is turning out to be people’s cup of tea. With an entertaining crew of contestants, including young Sydney couple Janelle and Monzir and outspoken radiation therapists Kate and Mary, it’s easy to see why. Tonight, the first lastchance challenge has four teams from group one cooking a main and dessert to score a spot in the semifinal.

TEN, 7.30pm It was only a matter of time before the savvy crew on The Living Room turned their focus to the ubiquitous work-from-home space. If yours is an unattractive, cluttered afterthought, Barry Du Bois and Amanda Keller’s revamp of a young couple’s small space will inspire with its sparkle and functionality. On the other side of the ditch, Dr Chris Brown (above) and Miguel Maestre have a nature-filled, tummy rumbling segment in the Hawke’s Bay mountains of New Zealand’s North Island. On top of the need to play triples and mixed pairs championship games that had been delayed, both Men’s and Women’s pennants have started in the last two weeks.

In the same period the Club saw Mark Bj Walkden win the Newcastle Mattara singles competition, Gilly play for the NSW Woomeras rep team and the arrival of a new Chief Executive Officer, Chris Fraser at the RSL Club. “We are thrilled with Mark’s Mattara victory and Gilly’s rep honours and warmly welcome Chris Fraser to the Club but we really haven’t had any time to celebrate these achievements as we should, as we are now still scrambling to get our pennant teams sorted and competitive,” Jim Healey the recently re-elected Men’s Bowls Club President said Also on the calendar this last week, the RSL Club hosted an umpires conference that saw 35 national level umpires from across the region gather to discuss challenges and issues faced by Bowls Umpires. Karuah now has a healthy quota of qualified umpires and most were able to attend.”Ithas been great to be able to have qualified and experienced umpires at each of the many competition days held recently and it has really raised the standards of play and officiating on each occasion,” Trevor Barclay, Karuah’s senior and most respected umpire said. If you would like to experience the chance to play and enjoy the many levels of the game on offer to Karuah bowlers, you will be made very welcome at the RSL.Both Men’s and Women’s Clubs are happy to host players from beginners through to experienced levels on Tuesdays and Thursdays for social bowls, names by 9:30am and on the green at 10:00am both days. Loaner bowls and instructions are available, casual clothes both days, if in doubt, ring the Club. See you at Karuah.

It was good to have the grass green back in play today for the Wednesday Triples competition.Adraw for partners sorted the 44 players out and the fine weather was savoured by all. The morning winners were decided by the Highest winning margin with Hylton Newman, Tony Butler, and Mark Nightingale. They had a margin of 9 points. The afternoon winners were Craig Bengston, Bob Peady, and Keith Smith with the highest winning score of 17. It was sad to hear of the passing of Dave Perry’s Dad and Roman Bondaruk Mum. The Club sends their condolences to both members, it is a sad time for themWith20both.Augustthe sun shining, the First National Dolphins Division 3 side played away at New Lambton today and I have unconfirmed reports that they came away with another great win with two teams winning and one team losing but the master board was the all-important factor, being ever so close, by a margin of just 3 shots.

Going into round 3 both Divisions are undefeated and next week Division 3 will again play away at Raymond Terrace and Division 4 will also play Raymond Terrace but with a home game
By John SLATER 17 AUGUST
The First National Dolphins Division 4 side hosted Fingal Bay at home and again it was nail-biting play all the way through. Only Dave Perry’s team managed a good win, after a shaky start, and the remaining two teams recorded narrow losses.Again, it was the allimportant master board that mattered with the Dolphins winning 62-58 and clinching 8 points in the process. Mention must be made of the valiant efforts of skip, Mark Hair, with the Dolphins 3-up on the master board with one end to play Mark found himself 3 down and the match was then in some peril, but as good skips do, he converted the 3 down to 2 up and then added another to take the end by three. The stuff of legends!

So God created man, male and female He created them, God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it. DEAR Jasminda, MY partner has great taste in decor. In fact, he considers himself a bit of an interior designer. And I agree with him. To a point. In the master bedroom (the one we sleep in) he has a very large painting of what can only be described as two animals making love. When I say animals, I mean a sheep and a llama. I find this extremely off-putting to the point where I only try to initiate romance in the loungeroom (where the artwork is a series of sea-themed paintings).
“October will see Tennis NSW hold a school Gala day for both the Catholic and the Public School, and a junior tennis tournament is already in the works where active kids vouchers can be utilised,” Aaron said.
Kimmy L. Dear Kimmy, THE fact that the first thing I did was to look up whether that hybrid was possible, maybe says more about me than your partner. I was unsuccessful; however, you can cross a llama with a camel (known as a cama).A rather moody animal apparently, which is little Personally, wonder.Ilike abstract artwork in bedrooms (though not as abstract as the image I conjure with the sheep/llama combo and their baby shama offspring). There are definitely some no-go zones in what adorns a bedroom wall. Family portraits can be very unpalatable - particularly when they include Uncle Roger. Religious artefacts, you know the Virgin Mary, Jesus on a Cross, Moses parting the seas, are better placed in another location, although I think a Buddha statue could be quiteI'mcalming.sureyour partner could integrate this with some wind chimes, prayer flags, a mandala bedspread and some incense (all these can be purchased off Etsy, which seems a bit kitsch, but there you go). You know, the best bet for bedrooms is subdued lighting (candles are lovely), natural hues, and lots of plants. Artwork is very subjective and, as you've found, not always conducive to creating the rightPS:mood.Your partner sounds odd. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
With assistance with local sponsors, such as Bulahdelah Medical Centre, the Club is excited to announce it will be offering free junior ‘first time’ memberships to 40 local schoolAlthoughchildren.the Club welcomes juniors, Aaron says that adults are already enjoying an invigorated weekly competition.
“We have a specific focus on connecting the young members of our community through sport, and encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle, particularly in the wake of COVID lockdowns over the years which have taken a high toll on mental health,” he said. The club held a successful inaugural Bulahdelah Tennis Club Tennis Camp throughout July and has been encouraging a family-friendly approach to the sport through ongoing junior coaching sessions and a soon-to-be Family Fun-day, where the Club members will open the courts to local families to bring their kids down for a free hit and a BBQ every Sunday during September.
By Bruce MURRAY, President, Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association HELLO, A QUICK wrap up on what your Progress Association has been doing these eight weeks.Wednesday, August 18 was Vietnam Veterans Day. I would like to join our community in saying “Thank you for your service” to all Vietnam Veterans and Peacekeepers. Following on from our successful Senior’s Week celebrations, we were invited directly to re-submit a request for a (bigger) grant for next year’s Senior’s Week. This is exciting and we have commenced planning for the festival to be held on Saturday 11 February 2023. There will be a change of venue due to the much-anticipated upgrade of the Hawks Nest Community Hall area, so stay posted. The theme is “Let’s Celebrate” and will include some market stalls as well as showcasing all our great community groups with live music and shows. The Progress Association has applied for a grant for $120,000 to replace the grass netball court at the Tea Gardens Skate Park with a modern hard surface court. The grant also has provision for other upgrades at the park. We are also working with MCC and relevant suppliers to finalise the location and construct of the previously approved external gym stations at Providence Bay, HawksThisNest.will also be subject to a separate grant.
