This week, for the team at Sea Shelter, was a tough one.

They were called out to Jimmys Beach at Hawks Nest where a fishing operation had discarded the bycatch to die.

The volunteers went into action only to find a heartbreaking number of sharks and rays dead and near dead on the shores of our normally beautiful waterway.

one brown stingaree, one sole, one Pygmy Triggerfish, 96 toad fish and there was a bunch more which had already been eaten by the pelicans before the count could be completed.”

A total of 241 marine animals died on site.

“At the time of publication Sea Shelter officially have surviving four Kapala and one common stingaree - we know at least one will survive as it is eating now.

“This is from about 28 that were rescued and taken back to Irukandji for care.”

The team returned around 30 animals to the waters and there are now another six still alive in care at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters in isolation tanks.

It is hoped that these will be released when they are healthy.

Ironically, Mr Pereira was interviewed two weeks earlier by News Of The Area, saying that the region was home to responsible commercial fishers locally who in the majority try to do the right thing.

“Our team of four volunteers worked all afternoon and into the night,” he said.

The team at Sea Shelter ask that everyone remains vigilant and report marine life in danger to the organization or to National Parks and Wildlife.

Anne retires after 27 years of serving

The rest of the team are missing Anne on the floor but are ready to serve the members of their community with a friendly smile.

IT’S not often that someone has the same job for 27 years anymore.

But local Anne Layton did just that, serving at the front at Coles in Tea Gardens for more than a quarter of a century.

Anne Layton’s is a face that most locals will know and will have seen nearly every time they have been grocery shopping each and every week.

Robert Walpole, of Coles Supermarkets is the Store Manager at the Tea Gardens store where Anne worked.

He told News Of The Area, “Anne was the longest serving employee here at Coles Tea Gardens, and was one of four current team members who were from the original Bilo supermarket, in the days before our store was rebadged as a Coles Supermarket in February 2014.”

Anne is now looking forward to retirement and the future.

For many living in the area Anne was serving at Coles when they first arrived and seeing her smiling face will be sadly missed

GIG Student Art Award SINCE being announced last year, HSC visual art students at Bulahdelah Central School have had their heads down and creative juices flowing as they participate in the inaugural Galleries in the Gardens (GIG) Student Art Award.

The Award was established by GIG as part of its commitment to our community.

Extended to local HSC students in its first year, the award fosters participation in art and encourages and rewards excellence.

Prizes include cash and a public exhibition of selected entries at The Gallery, Wednesday 7 through Sunday 11 October, 10am to 3pm.

“This year, students have found Covid 19 restrictions challenging but under the expert guidance and resourcefulness from art teacher, Sue Cross, they have resourced an individual art space in the art studios and at home, in case of lockdown,” said Vanessa Shultz, head of Humanities at the school.

“Weekend workshops have also been established to ensure students have additional time to complete works.”

President of GIG, Lesly Stevenson said, “We’re delighted with how the works are coming on – and it looks to be a close finish in determining our winner.”

In a decision handed down by the Supreme Court of NSW on 12 August 2020 (Hardy v Sidoti), a man has been successful in claiming ownership over a 3.35 square metre piece of land against his neighbour under the legal principle of adverse possession, commonly referred to as squatter’s rights.

Although the judgment largely involved a technical analysis of the law of adverse possession and its intersection with the torrens title system of land ownership, the following introduction by Justice Kunc provided a very colourful and uniquely Australian slant on the proceedings:‘These proceedings concern two very Australian phenomena: the “dunny” and dedication to home improvement. At issue is the ownership of a 3.35 square metre remnant of a “dunny lane” in Redfern, a suburb of historic significance for First Australians and in the development of Sydney as a city.

century, Redfern suffered from typhoid epidemics “directly attributable to the lack of drainage, airless tenements, and the use of the cesspit system”. Today, according to one writer, the suburb “has succumbed to a tsunami of smashed avocado and man buns”. Whatever the truth of that latter statement, those parts of Redfern which feature exquisitely renovated terrace houses are now highly prized Sydney real estate. The vestigial remains of “dunny lanes” are a reminder of a less sanitary past.’

In short, Mr Hardy who had paved, fenced and used the small parcel of land as a garden was successful in his claim that he had adversely possessed the former ‘dunny lane’ exclusively for 12 years against the legal owner and therefore had attained ownership of this land by adverse possession.

RICHARD Robertson of Hawks Nest has been able to deliver on a months-long promise to his 3-year-old daughter Addie thanks to the selfless generosity of Stokes Performance Horses.

Mr Robertson had promised Addie – who loves the movie Spirit and is enamored with horses – a horse ride on their holiday which was cancelled.

“Originally our plan was to travel to Mooloolaba with friends for a holiday but due to COVID that was shut down,” said Mr Robertson.

“Then my family was going to go to Dubbo where a work mate of mine offered some time on their farm and to take the girls horse riding.”

“We ended up not going to Dubbo in the end, and then out of the blue she asked when she’d be going horse riding on her holiday.”

Myall Coast Radio to hit airwaves soon

By Ashley CHRYSLER THE region’s new Myall Coast Radio is set to hit airwaves in the coming months – an idea that president of the station Chris Lock said was an idea four years in the making.

Mr Lock said that the station’s dedicated steering committee has worked tirelessly over the past year to make this dream a reality.

“One of the many challenges that we’ve faced was to raise $60,000 of seed funding to build, furnish and equip two studios with basic electronics, as well as obtain special licenses and insurance,” he said.

“I’m happy to say that this has now been achieved, thanks to our 21 seed funding businesses and more than a dozen individuals, who have fronted the money required to ensure the success of the station, despite these challenging times.”

The station is set to move into its next phase, which involves officially going to air.

It will begin trialling transmissions in the coming weeks, with the aim of sorting out any on-air bugs and streamlining the process before its anticipated launch date of 1 December.

“We anticipate a soft start transmission in October, with our more than 15 presenters being trained at this time,” said Mr Lock.

“The program format has lots of middle of the road music content, local humaninterest stories, hourly National and State

news with sport bulletins, plus some other interesting features.”

“We also plan to have programs involving our local schools, sporting groups, community and educational groups which are all part of the exciting new media for our community.”

Myall Coast Radio is looking for new members and volunteers.

The Australian Government is extending JobKeeper until 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support until 31 December 2020, after which income support will continue.

MOTORFEST 2021 cancelled THE officers of the Tea Gardens Motor Club have decided not to stage the traditional annual MOTORFEST in march 2021.

With the Coronavirus situation and unknown State Government and Council regulations it is too risky to stage an action plan now and risk a few thousand dollars of members funds to commit to a firm date.

Hopefully the overall virus situation becomes clearer by mid-2021 and we can once again plan for MOTORFEST for March 2022.

Top of the list is the recently renewed Myall River Art Walk (or bike ride) now featuring 37 unique works.

Starting from the Sea Eagle nest opposite the pelican topped police station, the walk winds along the river past TG Hotel’s pelican mural, down to the rustic “River Relic” sculpture, past the school’s ANZAC mural, over the Singing Bridge, ending up at the steel “Petrel Wall” overlooking Bennetts Beach.

Maps are available from the Tea Gardens Galleries in the Gardens.

Also the Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre reports that the 5km beachside Michael Rowe Memorial Walk is now at its best native flowering - drop in for information.

Lions BBQs are back on (with approved COVID safety plan) and rumour has it that they will be an ongoing affair so stay posted to support upcoming events.

Council has applied for funding for a footpath from Hawks Nest’s aged care facility Peter Sinclair Gardens, to the main street shops.

COUNCIL has applied for funding for a footpath from Hawks Nest’s aged care facility Peter Sinclair Gardens, to the main street shops.

If approved, the footpath would provide a more direct, easier and safer way for residents to visit the shops from their village homes.

MidCoast Council confirmed that they have applied for NSW Government Grant funding to construct the footpath, which would lead from Peter Sinclair Gardens to the shopping centre on Tuloa Avenue.

A spokeswoman from MidCoast Council said, “This project is part of

Council’s commitment to improving walking and cycling networks across the MidCoast.”

Mark, whose mother is a resident at Peter Sinclair Gardens, said, “Mum, like other elderly, is discouraged to walk to the shops or enjoy the water’s edge due to the poor pathways.”

“We need complete paths to the shops, as it’s currently a danger for those at the aged care facility who have no choice but to use the road for their trips.”

“Some of the route is also interrupted and has challenges such as sand, making it difficult for those with wheeled walkers to reach their destination safely.”

For another local with family at the facility, this would be an opportunity for her mother to get outdoors more.

“My mother's fitness goal was to walk to the shops from Peter Sinclair Gardens,” she said.

“She has been able to achieve this but it was hard and dangerous pushing her walker along sandy pathways.”

“It was slightly easier on the road, but much scarier with the flow of traffic.”

“If there was a smooth, safe pathway she might be able to do this walk more independently, with more confidence and less stress.”

Once approved, Council will begin to put firmer plans in place and share more details on timing.

WHILE helping my husband clean his shed, I stumbled across the RM Williams boots that he wore for 17 years, hasn't worn for the last 5, but he is for some reason hanging on to them.

They were completely clapped out and a home for Redback spiders.

Not game to toss them completely, I put them in the clothing bin.

Now, my husband has noticed they're missing and is asking where they are.

WENDY, 'what sparks joy' is a very personal thing.

I've been hanging on to a pair of Billabong shorts from two decades ago.

They are very short shorts and I'd be lucky to get them past my thighs, but it isn't about wearing them, it is about the memories associated with those shorts - long walks along Cable Beach, sunset cocktails, a job flogging Kimberley tours and a body that could pull off those shorts without a second thought.

Ridiculously, part of me thinks that one day I am going to get back in them and so they stay in the drawer taking up hardly any space.

Your husband's clapped out RM Williams may just be old spider-infested boots to you, but to him they hold close to two decades of memories (not counting their days languishing in retirement).

There was that time he thought he could ride a horse just because he looked the part and soon discovered why cowboys walk with a swagger.

Then, those countless hours standing around a bonfire searching for the meaning of life and finding it in a rum can.

He wore them out to dinner in glaringly mismatched combinations, and he lovingly polished them because those boots cost a pretty packet, Wendy.

And it wasn't just for the comfort of them either. When you wear RM Williams boots, you become RM Williams.

It is a bit like the end of the movie The Breakfast Club, where John Bender pierces the sky with his fist to the stirring lyrics of 'Don't You Forget About Me', but in this case your husband isn't a princess, a brain, an athlete, a basket case and a criminal, but a camel boy, a drover, a well digger, a leatherworker and a miner.

He IS the boot, Wendy.

I think what you need to do is rush down to that second-hand store and beg for those boots, unless a savvy vintage buyer has already snavelled them and is restoring them back to the dignity they deserve.

TEA GARDENS Red Cross members have recently completed their Disaster Relief Training to improve how they support local residents during emergencies this summer.

Ten members completed

the course which covered a range of emergency scenarios, improving their skills to help the community to prepare, respond and recover from disasters.

Janet Baker, the local Publicity Officer stated that, “Disasters, of all kinds, have wide-ranging, varied and

complicated impacts that individuals, families and communities must cope with, often for many years.

“The course updated us about how we can provide relief and recovery support to support individuals and our community to cope with and manage the

psychosocial impacts of emergencies.”

Charity Day again proves well supported

16 SEPTEMBER Another great spring day for bowls and 42 players attended for Wednesday Nominated Triples.

The winners today were decided from the morning games as picked in a random draw.

The winners, on the grass with 14 points, were Ray Prigg, Mark Hair and Ron Webster and on the synthetic, with 13 points, were Bob Peady, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh.

The Myall Bistro voucher went to “Lucky” Kev Barbie.

Thanks to the Myall Bistro for their support.

19 September A charity day was held today supporting “A Start in Life” giving local underprivileged children the chance of a good education to set them up in a later career.

The two students we are supporting continue to navigate their own challenges, particularly as they progress towards the end of their time in High School.

As one would expect, given this challenging time, additional obstacles have been added to the lot of all students.

A fine day meant a good attendance of players who enjoyed the challenge of the “Kneeler’s and Grippers” trophy.

Sadly, it is to be reported that the “Kneeler’s” won this year by 3.5 matches to 2.5.

Winners of the “Start in Life” medals were Geoff Page, Gary Wynne and Greg Pearson.

They won on a countback from Bob Weir, Mark Nightingale and Maynie Roberts.

Again, our Club punched well above their weight contributing $1,090.00 towards the overall “pot”

Irene, Ingrid Luck and Sandra Leisemann were leading by 4 shots on the 3rd end despite their best efforts

Irene, Wendy Jones and Dale Winter didn't manage to catch up going down 15 v 11.

Lyn Nightingale, Dot Dallas and Lorraine Murphy were losing by 8 shots on the 16th end (10 v 18) against Jean Glover, Judi Polak and Kayelene Pearson. Lorraine's team gained 6 shots on the next 2 ends making it a much more respectable score and

of $4,390 which included sizeable donations from Lodge Port Stephens, Tea Gardens Country Club, the local RSL sub-branch, and the Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs.

A terrific effort from all involved!

20 September The final of the Club Championship Triples was played today after early morning showers cleared away.

The contest between the teams of Bob Peady (substituting for Len Baker), Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh and Bill Baillie, Peter Cheney and John Slater commenced on a wet surface with little turn on the bowls.

Fast out of the blocks, Alan’s team soon dominated proceedings and after 13 ends they led by 19 shots 24-

The challenge came from John’s team at the 14th end and they succeeded over the next 7 ends to reduce the deficit to 5.

The ends ran out for the challengers with Alan’s team winning the match 25-20.

I wish I could say that it was a great game, but the early conditions made play less than spectacular.

“She came back to training and had to start from scratch.

She was suddenly getting beaten by people who would normally finish 10 metres behind her,” said Mr Keating.

“I thought that that would really knock her around, but she kept coming back for extra competitions.

“She kept fronting up and training hard. That really impressed me more than her

national silver medal.”

Mr Keating told News Of The Area how impressed he was with the young sprinter's dedication to training.

“This training period of 6 or 7 months, Kiera has been on a mission and it’s amazing to see.

“Anyone can say they want to go to the Olympics or be the best they can be, but actions speak louder than words.

Despite her young age, Keira has already overcome significant setbacks in her sprinting career, including a severe back injury which kept her from training for eight months.

In a normal year, NSW State Titles would have been held this month, and have been pencilled in to take place in November.

Both Keira and her coach are desperate for the event to go ahead.

“I am praying that they go ahead because she is ready to do something really special.

“I can’t see any 14-yearold in this country getting anywhere near her right now.”

Mr Keating believes Keira

has all the tools to make it onto the world stage.

“This is a testament to her and to her drive and will.

“She really wants to get as far as she possibly can.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Keira will be running in the Olympic games one day,” he said.

Keira found a love for the sport after joining Little Athletics in Hawks Nest at age five.

“I really enjoyed it and started competing very early on. I joined a local coach at

about 7 years and have never lost my love for athletics,” she said.

Keira has enjoyed the challenge of working under Mr Keating.

“Gerrard is enjoyable to train under but can be very strict when I don't do things correctly. He knows so much about the history of the sport and encourages me all the time. He really pushes me to get the best I can possibly do.”

For such a young competitor, Keira’s career has been packed with highlights.

“I was selected to be part of the NSW team to go to Adelaide and compete in the Pacific School Games in 2017.

I came second in the long jump and was a member of the 4x100m relay team who won and broke the record time!

“In the Australian National championships in 2019, I came second in the 13 years 100m sprint and was again a member of the NSW 4x100m relay team who won gold,” said Keira.

The pair have spent the last week training in Hawks Nest, taking advantage of the area’s sand dunes to take a break from track training.

“We have been training on the sand. I like it on the sand to give that little bit of resistance for them.

“It has been great to have an opportunity to come up and do some one-on-one training with Keira.”
