Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen BULAHDELAH Central School (BCS) students in Years 5, 6 and 7 recently participated in a practical full day workshop called Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT), aimed at encouraging females into nontraditional job roles such as trades.

According to the SALT website, “In Australia the figures for tradeswomen are still very small but they are increasing, with some companies now reaching 50 percent intake of female apprentices.”

Female 'tradies' mentored the BCS girls, showing them how to safely use power tools, hand saws, hammer and nails, drills and drivers.

“They made a wooden box with a handle they could take home on the day,” said BCS Careers Advisor Linda Drenkhahn.

“These boxes could be decorated and used for scrunchies and hair brushes, cutlery and condiments for the BBQ, etc.

“All the students had a great day and were very proud of their efforts,” Linda said.

percent raise for those on the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Pension, resulting in a $20.10 boost per fortnight for singles and $30.20 a fortnight for couples, bringing the total payments to $987.60 and $1,488.80 respectively.

In addition to this boost, Centrelink has also adjusted the thresholds for assets tests.

For singles, the threshold

has increased by $6,750 to $599,750 for homeowners and $816,250 for nonhomeowners.

For couples (combined), there has been a threshold increase by $10,000 to $901,500 for homeowners and $1,118,000 for nonhomeowners.

As reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2021, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest had the oldest median age of residents in

Social Services, Anne Ruston, said the increase will be helping those who rely on the social security system.

“This is putting money in the pockets of all Australians who rely on our social security system and, in particular, older Australians,” she said.

Liberal Senator Ruston said the increases had taken into account “the actual expenses of senior Australians”.

“It gives us a higher weighting to fuel and

support flood relief efforts “We were horrified that it (the floods) had happened and just wanted to help,” Jenny told News Of The Area.

The Karuah Working Together Centre was used as a collection point and Ms Semple said that she was overwhelmed by the locals who donated.

“The locals have been so wonderful.

“They’ve brought in so many things, both new and second hand.

“Linen, towels, bathroom products, cleaning products, food and everything in between; it was almost like Christmas,” she said.

Jim and Jenny filled up the truck that was used to transport items, five times to the absolute maximum before transporting goods to Lifeline and Rotary Raymond Terrace to be shipped to Lismore.

As proud members of the Karuah RFS, the couple simply wanted to help in any

transport costs in recognition of their significance to pensioners, which helps ensure the rate of the age pension maintains senior Australians’ purchasing power in the economy,” she said.

Although approximately five million Australians who access these payments will receive a rise, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has labelled this increase as spin.

“This government is so out of touch that they’re prepared to spin out there saying how well pensioners

are going to be off,” Albanese told reporters.

“When they get to the supermarket to buy products, they find that everything has gone up.

“The rise in the pension will not keep up with the costs of living.

“Pensioners are doing it really tough at the moment.”

Others who will receive a boost to their payments include Jobseekers, those on rent assistance and Australians who benefit from the parenting payment.

THE Karuah community has come together to support those impacted by flooding in Lismore.

Supported by the Karuah Working Together Centre’s Manager Jean Keeley, and Jim and Jenny Semple, donations of all kinds, from clothing, linen, food and cleaning products have been collected and distributed to two centres in the area to be shipped to Lismore to

“This is a picture of a squab, a ten-day old baby Fantail pigeon being held by its owner Greg Skene,” said Diane.

“This little bird had been abandoned by its mother but

is now doing well thanks to its caring owner and another mother pigeon taking it under her wing.

“At least this is a good news story and the pigeon, I have been reassured by my

brother in law, is doing just great!”

“Himself, his wife and

my three grandsons are now homeless as their house has been put down to be condemned.

“They got out with only the clothes they stood in.

“Thank you again, without people like you all, and everyone donating, the people affected would have nothing,” the resident said.

Karuah Preschool secures funding for outdoor play area KARUAH Preschool is the first successful local recipient under the Federal Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Program Round 7.

During his visit to the Preschool, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie congratulated staff on their successful funding application.

Federal funding of $12,500 will be used to purchase screen doors for the centre for improved air flow and to develop the children’s outdoor play space with a water course and canoe.

“It’s great to be at Karuah Preschool today, announcing the first of the projects in our region to be awarded funding under this latest round of the Stronger Communities Program,” Dr Gillespie said.

“I know Karen and her team are excited about the playground upgrades here.

“State funding has also allowed the Preschool to build a new bike track through the grounds, so there’s some good times ahead for Karuah kids.”

Support for draft marine park approach MIDCOAST Council has expressed overall support for the actions identified in the NSW Government’s draft Marine Parks Network Management Plan.

The plan, developed by the Marine Estate Management Authority, covers the five NSW mainland marine parks of

Cape Byron, Solitary Islands, Port Stephens-Great Lakes, Jervis Bay and Batemans Bay. “The draft plan presents management actions that aim to conserve environmental, social, cultural and economic values and manage priority threats to those values,” Mayor Claire Pontin said.

A submission to the

Marine Estate Management Authority, noted by the elected Council, provided technical feedback on the actions identified in the plan.

“Our submission indicates our overall support for the actions contained in the plan, which are consistent with our plans,” Cr Pontin added.

Former emergency service chiefs speak out

WHILE some parts of the Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions fared reasonably well during the recent flood crisis, others weren’t so lucky, and now 37 former emergency service chiefs have spoken out on the Federal Government’s management of the crisis.

Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) launched their statement in Brisbane last Monday, citing evidence that the Government was warned ahead of the 2022 floods and did little in response.

Greg Mullins was a Former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW, one of Australia’s longest-ever serving fire chiefs, and is now leader of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action.

“The Federal Government’s fumbling of this flood disaster is Black Summer all over again,” he said.

“Last October, charity leaders met with the Federal Government and were warned of massive flooding this summer.

“The Government knew what was coming and it did not adequately prepare our communities or first responders. “Time and again this Government fails to listen

to expert advice.

“There are 80 recommendations of the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements gathering dust.

“The Government has failed to implement them.

“Our elected leaders in Canberra are failing communities right around the country impacted by this disaster, and the thousands of emergency service volunteers and professionals who willingly place their own lives in danger by responding to increasingly frequent and dangerous climate-fuelled disasters.

“Those of us who do hold hoses know just how dangerous climate change has become.

“Australia is underprepared, and Canberra has no answers to how it will rapidly slash emissions this decade.”

Former Deputy Director General of the NSW State Emergency Service, ELCA member and flood expert Chas Keys said, “This disaster’s shown us that we can’t continue with business as usual.

“Bandying about terms like ‘one-in-500 year’ flood is meaningless to people who are experiencing such

disasters repeatedly.

“Above all else, we need the Federal Government to take climate change seriously by cutting back drastically on the mining and burning of fossil fuels.

“We also need to reset the way we manage disasters, with spending between mitigation versus relief and recovery completely out of kilter.

“There is no more manageable hazard in Australia than flooding: we know where it will occur, we’re usually warned ahead of it and we can predict what its effects will be.

“We’re just not managing this risk well, and it hurts us over and over again to a greater extent than it should.”

Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area, “I don't believe in politicising natural disasters.

“Our focus should be, and is, on assisting those who have been devastated by the recent flood events and providing the assistance they need to rebuild.

"As part of the on-going flood response, a National Emergency Declaration was signed into effect by the Governor-General.

"The National Emergency

Declaration ensures all federal government emergency powers are available, such as financial support and resources from all Commonwealth Departments and Agencies.

"The declaration will allow the Australian Government to further improve relief and recovery efforts in impacted communities, particularly by reducing red tape and

allowing for the streamlining of normal processes.

"An additional $551.7 million will be provided to support flood affected communities across New South Wales as part of the next round of Commonwealth and New South Wales Government funding.

“This brings the total amount of joint recovery funding in NSW to almost $1

billion ($986.4 million).

"This additional funding will provide support to small businesses, primary producers, councils, households, and families hard hit by the devastating floods and includes a $285.2 million temporary housing package and grants for primary producers and small business.”

PODCASTS have never been more popular, and local high school students are getting in on the act!

According to the annual Infinite Dial Australia 2021 study, released by Edison Research and Commercial Radio Australia, 5.6 million Australians, or 26 percent of the population, listen to a podcast each week.

Recently, Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Students in Years 10-12 have had the opportunity

to participate in a Pop-Up Podcast workshop.

They worked in small groups and learnt how to write and record a podcast using Audacity and royalty free music.

“This course teaches students how to write, edit, produce and host their very own podcast,” said BCS Careers Advisor Linda Drenkahn.

“It uses professional recording equipment and software resulting in a

quality end product and the tools and skills needed to continue podcasting.”

Learning outcomes are mapped to the English syllabus assisting with assignments, confidence and public speaking.

“Thanks to Regional Industry Education Partnerships for providing this opportunity and to Stephanie from Media for Millennials for sharing her expertise,” said Linda.

Bucketts Way Upgrade

THE Bucketts Way has long been a road that drivers need to use with care and patience.

The 151km road is a vital link from Raymond Terrace to Gloucester and Taree and was named after the Bucketts Mountains, a prominent mountain range near Gloucester.

It is also the road that locals use to access the stunning Barrington Tops.

Now new works to improve The Bucketts Way intersection at Weismantels Road are underway.

The works will include vegetation removal, a dedicated right turn

lane, road widening and resurfacing.

A drainage upgrade in Weismantels Road will help prevent flooding.

Road users should expect short delays.

There will be 40kph speed limits in place and temporary traffic controls, including lights and lane closures at some times.

“We thank road users for their patience as we undertake these important upgrades," said MidCoast Council’s Acting Manager Operations North, Peter Gesling.

“Once completed, this section of The Bucketts Way will be safer, quieter and much more comfortable to

drive on.”

The works are scheduled for completion in August, weather permitting, and are funded by the Federal Government, the NSW Government and MidCoast Council.

They are part of a major program to improve the road link between the Mid North Coast hinterlands, the Northern Tablelands and the Pacific Highway to Newcastle.

The program aims to improve opportunities for regional development.

SHARK response capabilities will be enhanced at beaches across the state, with the NSW Government announcing a boost of $4.4 million for a suite of immediate additional mitigation methods, as well as ongoing funding of more than $85 million to continue this strategy until 2026.

Minister for Agriculture Dugald Saunders said shark interactions are always possible, regardless of the technologies deployed - but that it is critical for the NSW Government to do everything possible to reduce that risk to the millions of beachgoers who hit the water every year.

“We are not only announcing immediate additional response capabilities, including more

Shark Listening Stations, SMART Drumlines and Rapid Response Vehicles, but we’re also committing to ongoing funding for future mitigation to protect our beachgoers for years to come.”

The immediate additional response package includes: 10 additional VR4G Listening Stations, 60 extra SMART drumlines, 500 more shark tags to trace sharks caught on an expanded drumline roll out, funding for four more Rapid Response Vessels, Long Range Drone Trials in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW, additional Surf Life Saving resources to increase their presence at beaches and applied research into wetsuit materials to reduce the impact of shark attacks.

immediate response package, a $85.6 million 2022-2026 Shark Management Program has been introduced, that will extend the 51 nets currently deployed seasonally as part of the Shark Meshing Program, continue and expand the SMART drumline program whilst also establishing a First Responder Team to coordinate this response to shark incidents.

Calls To Stop Logging Native Forests

PORT Stephens and the MidCoast LGA’s have areas of state forest which are potentially available for logging.

However, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW claims that logging native forests is not only driving species to extinction, the NSW Forestry Corporation’s annual report shows it is also costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

In 2020-21, the native forestry arm of the NSW Government’s logging company lost $20 million and prospects of it turning a profit any time soon are dim.

“This result should be good news for our native forests because there is now no rational economic argument for propping up that part of the industry,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.

“The latest annual report shows NSW taxpayers unwittingly paying to cut down forests the people want protected.

“It’s not just ecologically and economically unsustainable, it is morally indefensible.

“If you’ve got the public, the scientists and even the bean-counters telling you to stop cutting down native forests, the government must listen and act.

“Taxpayer dollars should be used to

protect forests, not destroy them.

“Victoria and Western Australia have announced end dates for native forest logging — NSW must do the same.

“Ending native forest logging will save species, store carbon, fight climate change and open up huge opportunities for tourism and jobs.

“Ending native forest logging must be done in ways that are fair to the workers and companies involved. We stand ready to work with all stakeholders - workers, industry and government - to turn the page on native forest logging and look forward to a brighter future.”

Mr Gambian said the government should not renew the 30 wood supply agreements with timber mills that will expire in 2023 but rather start talks with workers and the industry about transitioning out of native forest logging.

“The government will have to make a choice in the coming year,” Mr Gambian said.

“Will it lock in destructive native forest logging for years to come or will it develop a plan to transition to a sustainable, plantation-based timber industry?

“We strongly urge the government to end native forest logging and close this sad chapter in the state’s environmental history.”

forests deliver a vast range of benefits for our communities, including regional tourism drawcards, clean waterways, habitat for protected wildlife, biodiversity, carbon storage and responsible wood products.

“Only approximately one percent of native forests are harvested every year.

“The 2020-21 financial result reflects the lower level of timber harvesting operations which took place after the 2019-20 bushfires, which affected approximately 50 percent of native forests and a quarter of softwood plantations.

“This has resulted in a significant

recovery program which will continue to see additional costs in road building and replanting.

“State forests generate renewable timber products like house framing, flooring, furniture and packaging in a way that is carefully managed, so that forest values are preserved and forests continue to grow and produce renewable timber in perpetuity.

“Our forests also provide employment to tens of thousands of people in the regions,” he said.

The 2019 Review recommended the test be brought forward from May to as early as possible in the year, so that results can be used more productively by schools and teachers.

From 2023, NAPLAN tests will move to Term 1, with all results except for writing delivered earlier.

“Delivering results earlier in the year means teachers have a better understanding of where their students are at and can develop classroom programs accordingly,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This is a win for teachers, students and their families.

“It ensures the assessment can be used more effectively, and provides greater opportunity to improve learning outcomes.”

In addition to these changes, from Term 2 2024 schools will also be able to opt-in to additional assessments for Year 6 and 10 students, starting with Science in 2024, Civics and Citizenship in 2025, and Digital Literacy in 2026.

With NAPLAN successfully undertaken across the country in 2021, the My School website has now been updated with schoollevel NAPLAN data.

“My School is an excellent resource to help parents, schools and governments understand the performance of schools,” said Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) CEO David de Carvalho.

Over the last three years, My School has had an average of 2.3 million visitors.

The ‘Student progress’ information on the My School website includes tables showing the percentage of students at the school whose progress was better than expected, given the school’s average score two years ago and the level of community socio-educational advantage.

In the 2022 update, more than 500 Australian schools showed well above the average progress of students with the same starting score and similar backgrounds for at least one domain and more than 30 percent of these schools were in regional or remote areas.

My School includes an Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) that

indicates the average educational advantage of the school’s students and is calculated using information about a parent’s occupation and education, school geographical location and the proportion of Indigenous students.

A school’s ICSEA value is provided to encourage taking socio-educational advantage into account when comparing school achievement.

“Too often, media organisations try to construct crude ‘league tables’ based on overall achievement without considering the schools’ level of socio-educational advantage or the amount of progress the students have made in the previous two years.

“Such comparisons are meaningless.”

“The schools that are punching above their weight are those that are achieving above expectation in terms of progress on where their students were two years ago, taking into account their level of socio-educational advantage.

“Let’s find out what those schools are doing and think about how good practice can be replicated," Mr de Carvalho said.

FOR students participating in NAPLAN, the testing can be the source of some anxiety, however getting the results can help teachers to tailor programs to better meet student needs.

Improvements to NAPLAN were announced last week, including moving the test to Term 1 and returning results much earlier, and will be implemented from 2023 following a review led by NSW. Minister for Education and Early Learning

Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased that changes were happening in line with the review initiated by NSW in 2019 to make NAPLAN a more effective diagnostic tool.

“These are necessary changes I have been pushing for over the past two years, particularly following the success of the NSW Check-In Assessments, which give teachers results within 48 hours,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Currently the timing of NAPLAN means it is not diagnostic, as students sit the tests quite late and results are delivered months later, minimising their value in the classroom.”

NSW Seniors Festival

THE NSW Seniors Festival is back and celebrating the new direction that our seniors can take in their retirement.

With more than one third of people living on the MidCoast aged over 60 there are plenty of people that can benefit from the festival.

As a community we draw on the wisdom and experience of seniors, as story-tellers they keep our history alive, they support our active volunteer network, and instil values in our younger generations.

From tech workshops to

scrabble sessions, there are loads of events happening across the MidCoast for this year’s NSW Seniors Festival.

PURCHASERS of used motor vehicles in NSW are being warned by Fair Trading of scams involving odometer tampering.

This follows after a fourfold increase in the number of fines issued for the offence in NSW in the past year, with hundreds of thousands of kilometres being knocked off vehicle odometers and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

NSW Fair Trading q Odometer tampering has increased four times the incident rate in 2021-22.

Investigators dished out $112,200 in fines and 76 penalty notices in 2021 and 2022.

Minister for Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said as used motor vehicle sales have risen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, so too have incidents of odometer fraud where perpetrators wind back the mileage or replace the odometer with one showing fewer kilometres.

“This is a huge jump from 22 total penalties in 2020 - so

anyone considering conning a potential buyer by odometer tampering should know that when you are caught, it’s going to cost you,” Ms Petinos said.

"In one case a seller shaved off more than 400,000km off a 2012 Subaru XV, reducing the odometer from 470,000km down to 52,709km.

“The vehicle was then sold for $32,000, an $11,000 increase on the original sale price.

FERAL animals, domestic pets, weeds and nesting sites disturbed by humans are wreaking havoc on our shorebirds and their habitats.

MidCoast’s littoral rainforests are home for over 100 types of trees and shrubs.

They provide habitat for over 70 threatened plants and animals.

They also provide an important buffer to coastal erosion and wind damage.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

16 MARCH The start of the 'footy' season was celebrated today with players turning up in their preferred club’s colours.

The lure of free pies and sauce might have done it, but whatever, 57 bowlers enjoyed the weather and the atmosphere to contest Wednesday Nominated Triples.

The immensely popular

Daryl Martin won a beer for being the 'best dressed’, resplendent in Tiger colours from head to foot.

It was the shorts and socks that did it.

The morning winners were decided on the 'lowest winning margin' and with a margin of two Col Walton, Bob Weir and Paul Carter were the winners.

The afternoon game was decided by the 'Highest winning score' and Len Baker,

Glen Reinhard, and Dennis Longman with a score of 20 took the prize money.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Dennis Ashbridge.

Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for sponsoring this voucher.

The organising committee have made a welcome change to the conditions of play on Wednesdays, resolving the problem when scores are tied.

If the score is tied, then the jack is rolled and spotted and one bowler from each

MYALL COASTNews Of The Area team bowls one bowl each and the closest to the jack gets one point added to their score to decide a winner.

Previously tied games resulted in both teams being ineligible for prize money.

19 March Today the Club enjoyed the visit from a team of visiting bowlers from the Pitt Town Club in Sydney.

The weather was not kind with a strong southeast wind making good bowling difficult.

RESULTS from Cessnock Swim Meet 19 March 2022 Five Myall Masters members attended the swim meet with the first plunge into a 50m pool since 2019.

They were all a bit shell shocked after training in our 25m Tea Gardens pool all season.

Although we had a small team in numbers, Myall Masters amassed enough points from our swim to overhaul many clubs throughout the State.

Myall Masters came 8th

out of 25 clubs.

Club members Adrian Reynolds and Leon Bobako were invited to officiate at the meet.

Linda Stubbs had a very strong swim in the 800m to improve her time by 43 seconds and confirmed her ability as a strong distance swimmer.

Chris Lock in the 80 to 84 showed his dominance in the Backstroke events.

20 March Some of the Pitt Town bowlers stayed on to swell the ranks of the Sunday bowlers today and it was great to see the synthetic green full of players.

Sunday bowls are becoming extremely popular with good fields now the norm each week.

New bowlers are very welcome, and they can be directed to bowls coaches who are only too happy to ensure that they get pleasure from the game.

Champion, Jeff Baker did wonderfully well in reaching the 3rd round of the Newcastle District 'Champion of Champions' competition.

He was narrowly beaten 26-31 to halt his progression in the competition.

The draw is now out for the Club Major Pairs Championship commencing next weekend, with five games to be played Saturday and four games on Sunday.

There are some 'gun' teams entered so play on both days will be fierce.

Nominations are now open for the Club Championship Triples due to commence in May.

Kingfish Study Launches

IF you have ever wondered what your fishing license fees go towards, this is one project that is funded which is set to improve knowledge of kingfish fisheries.

Project Kingfish is a science initiative led by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in collaboration with Macquarie University, the UNSW and NSW Department of Primary Industries.

The project aims to satellite track movements of mature-sized yellowtail kingfish (>83 cm fork length) to fill current knowledge gaps about their regional movements, habitat use and connectivity, and gain insights

into where the east Australian stock may be spawning and recruiting to the coast.

Kingfish are known to frequent Port Stephens, and as a pelagic species they travel up and down the coast.

Catching a Kingfish is a great sport fishing experience and to top it off the species make for great eating.

To achieve success the research team will be partnering up with experienced anglers over the next two years to find, catch and tag suitable fish in various locations off the NSW coast as well as offshore seamounts/islands and other sites of relevance to the stock.

The first satellite tag was recently deployed on

a 125 cm kingfish in the waters off Norfolk Island by Project Kingfish collaborator Dr Thomas Clarke and experienced local angler Scotty Greenwood.

The tag is very much like a minicomputer.

It will log data on swimming depth, activity (via acceleration logged in three dimensions), sea temperature and light levels (used to reconstruct the movement track) but won’t report back until it detaches from the fish and floats to the surface a few months later.

being very concerned early one Sunday morning, reprimanding me for doing the gardens on my own in case I put a fork in my foot with no one around.

She was a truly beautiful person who will be missed by so many.

With Covid I had not seen Fran for some time, so how lucky it was for me to catch up with her at the annual high tea lunch at the Centre where we had a good chat.

Then to learn only a couple of weeks later she had suddenly passed away, no time to say goodbye.

I will always treasure great memories of this lovely lady.

Present at the meeting was Anglican Bishop Peter Stuart and Dr David Gillespie, the sitting Member for Lyne.

Whilst many in attendance will form their own views regarding the performance of Bishop Stuart and Dr Gillespie, it was abundantly clear that the people of Bulahdelah gave trust to Anglican Care only to see it soiled in return.

The people from the Bulahdelah community spoke with dignity in the face of what could only be best described as a callous indifference that cared more about profit than it does about people.

My question would be to both Bishop Stuart and Dr Gillepsie, "At what point does it become more profitable to improve the lives of our loved ones, than it does, to destroy their lives?"

As we know a Federal Election is due.

I would respectfully ask the Bulahdelah community to view the Greens’ ‘Older People’ policy.

Whilst the perception of the Greens is mainly as a party for environmental issues, they are also a party for social justice and a grassroots democracy that rejects corporate donations.

With regards to Aged Care, important points of Greens’ policy are: 1. The Federal Government must play a central role in the funding, regulation and support of high quality aged care services.

2. Aged Care should be provided on a not-for-profit basis.

Dear Mrs JD, That does sound very frustrating. You obviously have an open plan office which is great in theory but a surefire way to end up manifesting into significant downtime as you all negotiate and work around each other's workplace styles. Some people are quiet workers.

They sit there, totally absorbed in what they are doing, hardly noticing as the minutes tick down to 5pm freedom. Others are like caged animals. I don't want to be seen as sexist here, but in the offices I have worked in, it is most often the men who seem unable to sit for long periods of time. They pace, they rock in their chairs, they tap their pens to The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray (which goes on forever), they stare out the window like seven-year-olds waiting for little lunch and on it goes until very soon their noise is all you can hear. You become attuned to it. Frustrated by it. Incensed. Stir crazy. It gets to the point where you give them errands just to get them away from your general vicinity.

I think this has become a lot worse since a semi return to normal following the COVID-19 lockdown. Many of us got to enjoy the space and serenity of our homes, so coming back to the workplace was quite literally an abuse of the senses. Our bodies and minds were attuned to chill mixes on Spotify, sipping herbal tea, doing some sneaky meditation, taking a quick breather in the sunshine and falling asleep on the outdoor lounge. Heck, let's be open and transparent here - sneaking in a 2pm drink or two, justifying it with that great adage to write drunk and edit sober (since we didn't have to worry about drinking and driving -- we were already home in our pyjamas anyway).

Is there another space where you can relocate? When we were all working from home, I often went and sat in my car (though I did have to explain to the neighbours a few times that I was of sound mind). It was like a vacuum of serenity - warm, comfortable and wonderfully silent. Worth a try if you get really desperate.

Regional Sports Funded SPORT Australia has announced $1.9 million in Regional Sports Events Funding for a number of regional and remote Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The funding, which is now open for applications, will support community events with an aim of kickstarting local economies and encouraging visitors back after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants will also assist rural and regional communities that have been affected by flooding and natural disasters.

Minister for Sport, Richard Colbeck, said that LGAs outside cities will benefit from the $1.9 million investment from Sport Australia.

"Sport is often the glue that brings rural and regional

communities together and this program aims to fast-track the recovery from what’s been a very challenging period for these parts of Australia," Minister Colbeck said.

"Local sporting clubs and associations play an incredibly important role in regional Australia and through this fund, the Australian Government is encouraging communities to come together and celebrate through sport.

"Staging these events in regional and remote communities will also benefit the small businesses that are central to local economies across the country."

Over 400 Local Governments are eligible to apply for stream one ($1,000-$10,000) and stream two ($15,000-$50,000) in funding, including MidCoast
