“I was pleased to secure a $50,000 grant for the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council to improve their ageing community hall, and a $43,000 grant for the Tilligerry Rural Fire Service to install a large electronic sign for important community safety and warning messages,” Kate Washington MP said.

Tennis clubs have also been served with funding, with both Hinton and Soldiers Point tennis clubs receiving funds for court upgrades.

Port Stephens’ youngest community members will also see new projects, with preschools in Anna Bay, Raymond Terrace and Medowie receiving funding.

Community connection is a key theme of successful projects.

Once delivered, these projects will assist in bringing the community together after months of social distancing and cancelled events.

As one of the members of the assessment panel for this grant program, Kate Washington MP highlighted the importance of funding being delivered to all parts of the electorate.

“When I’m involved in a grants program like this one, I make sure funding opportunities are awarded fairly, which means this funding will reach organisations from Tea Gardens to Tilligerry, from Hinton to Anna Bay,” Ms Washington said.

Emergency Services Update

SES Port Stephens Flood Boat Maintenance Members from the NSW SES Port Stephens Unit have been out and about this week, conducting essential Flood Boat maintenance and checks.

Although there is no current flooding in our area, it is imperative that Flood Boats and Operators are kept ready to always go.

Flood Boats are not only used during flooding events to rescue people from flood water, transport isolated people and transport essential food /supplies and to conduct reconnaissance activities

(such as checking water levels, surges, river conditions and more), but are also used during non-flooding events.

Bombah Point Rescue The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by New South Wales Ambulance at 7:05pm on Monday 14 February to a report of a serious single vehicle MVA with the driver and passenger injured at Bombah Point on the Myall Lakes.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics carried out initial treatment of the 86-year-old male and 82-year-old female and transported them to Bulahdelah Showground and rendezvoused with the Helicopter.

The Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team further

stabilised the couple before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, both suffering chest injuries.

Their condition is reported to be stable.

TEA Gardens’ own Tea Gardens BBQ Boats have taken out two major awards at the MidCoast Business Awards.

The business, which only began operations in 2019, is thrilled to have received both the Tea Gardens People’s Choice and Tea Gardens Best Start Up awards at the virtual MidCoast Business Awards which took place on 12 February.

Tea Gardens BBQ Boats is owned and operated by a local husband and wife team, Jason and Kathrine Riley.

The couple told News Of The Area that they were just excited to be named as a finalist, and weren’t expecting anything else.

“It was such a wonderful surprise and an honour to win two awards,” they said.

The People’s Choice Award for Tea Gardens are popularly-voted and the couple are thankful to all those who voted.

Many parents are already at the end of their tether with the extra stress that COVID-19 has brought to their lives. For separated parents, however, the recent rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11 years may add yet another layer of complexity if they are in conflict with the other parent as to whether their child should have it or not.

For a lot of separated parents, agreeing their child should have the COVID-19 vaccine is a simple process; they are able to communicate about any concerns either may have and about how they will get the vaccine administered – the when, where and by whom.

But for some parents, even the communication can be difficult. In one matter that I have seen, one parent simply declared “my child will not be vaccinated” – with the message being loud and clear that even trying to enter into communication about the issue would not be possible.

In other matters I have seen, the sole dispute between the parents is (or has become) whether the child should have the vaccine

– derailing what was otherwise a promising post-separation parenting relationship.

For parents in dispute the first step is dispute resolution – usually in the form of mediation.

There the issues are likely to be between one parent saying it is best for the child to have the vaccine (in terms of participation in events/schooling, international travel and for the greater good of the family/community) as against the other parent saying that an apparent risk for this child outweighs those factors.

It is to be hoped that dispute resolution resolves the issue because the cost of the Court process is far from ideal for either parent. Given the public safety issues, however, the Court has implemented a COVID list; designed to fasttrack Court resolution of matters involving COVID-19 disputes between parents should they need it.

Skaters hit the ramps AFTER several postponements due to wet weather, skaters from across the region took to the Tea Gardens Skatepark on the weekend for free Learn To Skate workshops from Totem Collective, Australia’s largest skate-event company, in partnership with MidCoast Council.

Totem Skateboarding Mentors Ben Currie and Aimee Harris were on hand to share their expertise with the keen young skaters.

Event Coordinator Brooke Feltis said, "The Totem Skateboarding workshop is a great example of the success of community working in collaboration with Council to bring new and exciting opportunities to our regional town.

“Often the needs of our

local youth get overlooked given the large demographic of older adults in the area.

“I hope that the workshop today helps to keep youth issues on the agenda and creates momentum for more youth programs and services in Tea Gardens Hawks Nest in the future.”

The young attendees saw the workshops as a raging success, with Lil (7) saying, “It was awesome, I loved learning how to tic tac."

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the Small Business Support Program will provide cashflow assistance to help

Covid-19 Settings Updates THE NSW Government has further eased restrictions as the state continues to manage the impacts of Covid-19.

From the beginning of Friday, 18 February 2022, the following adjustments were made to the settings: • No density limits (previously one person per 2sqm for hospitality venues); • QR check-ins will only be required for nightclubs, and for all music festivals with more than 1,000 people.

Hospitals, aged and disability facilities may use their existing systems for recording visitors; • Singing and dancing will be permitted at all venues, except music festivals, where singing and dancing can recommence from 25 February; • The recommendation to work from home will change and be returned to the employer’s discretion.

From the beginning of Friday, 25 February 2022, the following adjustments will be made to the settings: • Masks will only be mandated on public transport, planes, and indoors at

airports, hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, corrections facilities and indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people; • Masks are encouraged for indoor settings where you cannot maintain a safe distance from others and for customer facing retail staff to protect vulnerable people who must access these premises and services; • Each State Government agency will review where it may be appropriate for publicfacing staff to wear masks and will implement as necessary; and • The 20,000 person cap on music festivals will be removed, with singing and dancing permitted.

Vaccination requirements will remain for indoor music festivals over 1,000 people, with attendees required to have at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Hotel quarantine for unvaccinated returning travellers will be reduced from 14 to 7 days from 21 February.

With hospitalisation and ICU rates easing and booster uptake now above 50 percent a staged return of non-urgent elective surgery across all NSW public hospitals has

commenced and will be increased through February to March.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW Government is continuing to adopt a flexible and measured approach to protect the community and our health system.

“We don’t want restrictions in place for any longer than necessary and with hospitalisation and ICU rates trending downwards now is the right time to make sensible changes,” Mr Perrottet said.

“As we continue to move forward out of the pandemic we are ensuring that we keep people safe and people in jobs so life can return to normal as quickly and safely as possible.

“Our frontline health staff have done an incredible job protecting the community and we need everyone to step up and do the right thing and get their booster shots to help keep themselves, their family and the community safe.”

“Improving the care for people after a suicide attempt, whether it be recent or an attempt in the past, helps to reducing suicide attempts and suicide deaths,” he said.

“Reducing suicide attempts also reduces the impacts on loved ones, friends, first responders and the health service.”

People do not need a referral to join an Eclipse support group.

LIFELINE is encouraging people who have made a suicide attempt and their families to gain support to recover through its Eclipse support groups starting this month.

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast CEO Rob Sams said Eclipse is a confidential, eight-week online support program that gives suicide attempt survivors a safe and non-judgemental place to talk to one another and learn skills to help them to cope with thoughts of suicide.

He said participants meet for two hours once a week.

The groups are run by Lifeline facilitators, trained in suicide prevention.

Mr Sams said as Eclipse is online, support is accessible to people across the Hunter and Central Coast without the need to travel to a regional centre.

He said participants all start at the same time and complete the eight weeks together, making it more comfortable to share personal information.

Eclipse is a component of the AfterCare pilot program funded by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network.

Morgan Gao will be performing his HSC piece at OnSTAGE, a presentation of performances and projects by HSC Drama Students, at the Seymour Centre this week “Congratulations to Morgan and his teachers not only for completing the HSC in a year like no other, but for producing work of such high quality.

“It is no small feat to have the work of a student within the Myall Lakes exhibited on the big stage,” Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead said.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the local students were part of only 260 HSC graduates to have been selected from across the state to be featured in the HSC showcases.

“I’m so proud of these talented students and I strongly encourage our local schools, teachers and community members to get along and take a look at this year’s showcases and to celebrate their incredible work,” Ms Mitchell said.

This year CALLBACK, ENCORE, OnSTAGE and SHAPE 2021 Seminars will be available for schools to watch online, from wherever they are in NSW. ARTEXPRESS is now on at the Art Gallery of NSW, and at limited venues across the state throughout the year.

of us are familiar with the whip crack call of the male Eastern Whipbird as these birds are common in our area however, they are wary and shy, preferring dense undergrowth so you might not have seen one.

“They feed on the ground, turning over leaf litter to find insects and their larvae and then run and hop through the bush and up trees, their rapid movements making them difficult to spot.

“I took this photograph

of an adult Eastern Whipbird along the track leading from Winda Woppa to Jimmys Beach.

“I was lucky enough to watch this bird for several minutes one afternoon as it hopped around the branches.

‘It was a great opportunity to observe a bird which is more often heard than seen."

Mandatory Consent Education for all Australian Schools

THE landmark mandate to include consent education in the Australian curriculum has passed in Parliament this week.

This is a historic win for not only young people across Australia, but for campaigns including Chanel Contos’ ‘Teach Us Consent’ campaign, which has been

the largest advocating petition for this mandate.

Launching in 2020, the petition gained over 44,000 signatures and more than 6,700 testimonies of sexual assault. Sexual, domestic and family violence support organisation Full Stop Australia welcomes the decision to include ageappropriate sexual consent education in all Australian

schools from kindergarten to Year Ten. Full Stop Australia chief executive officer Hayley Foster was overcome by the news that all federal and state education ministers unanimously agreed to incorporate sexual consent within the curriculum.

“This is a generational change that will equip young people with proper

knowledge around sexual consent at each level of their education.

“We know from our sexual violence helpline that teenagers are not only the highest risk group of experiencing sexual violence, but also perpetrating it,” Ms Foster said.

This mandate comes after twelve months of

dedicated campaigning

by Full Stop Australia Ambassador Chanel Contos and the passionate advocacy of young people throughout Australia.

“Consent education will mean we can stop it before it starts.

“This is about educating our young people but also changing societal norms and expectations before they have their first intimate encounter.”

Ms Foster said the

leadership displayed by Ms Contos is awe-inspiring.

“Ms Contos has been the fire stick that has skilfully harnessed public sentiment to achieve this significant reform that many advocates have long been striving for,” Ms Foster said.

The education on consent will be made mandatory in all Australian schools from 2023, following the state and federal ministers’ unanimous decision.

Education Ministers are due to meet in April to finalise the new curriculum.

THE Morrison Government has taken the next step to formally reject the application for the Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permit PEP-11.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said following the Government’s proposed decision to not suspend, extend and vary the title conditions of PEP-11 on 16 December 2021, the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) issued the applicant a Notice of Intention to Refuse and granted the applicant 30 days to respond to the notice.

“After considering the applicant’s response, I have made the decision under section 59(3) of the Offshore Petroleum and

Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 to propose to refuse the application,” the Prime Minister said.

“As a result, I have written to New South Wales Deputy Premier Paul Toole, as the joint authority partner, advising of the Government’s proposed decision.“ Deputy Premier Toole has 30 days to respond, following which a decision will be finalised.

The PEP-11 permit threatened 3D seismic testing and/or offshore drilling in an area of 4,500 square kilometres off the coast of Newcastle.

Pandemic continues to drive citydwellers to regional Australia NEW data from the Commonwealth Bank reveals quarterly migration from capital cities to regional areas over the past two years is averaging fifteen percent higher than what it was in the two years pre-COVID 19.

The latest Regional Movers Index – a partnership between the Commonwealth Bank and the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) – analyses the quarterly and annual trends in people moving to Australia’s regions.

According to the December quarter Index released last week, net migration to regional areas is more than double the levels recorded over the two years prior to the pandemic.

Commonwealth Bank’s Executive General Manager for Regional and Agribusiness Banking, and RAI Regional Australia Council (RAC2031) member, Paul Fowler said, “City siders have really embraced Australia’s regions over the past two years and as we see flexible working

arrangements continue and Australia’s domestic and international borders opening up, it’s likely we will continue to see this movement as people recognise the benefits of a regional lifestyle.”

Dr Kim Houghton, the RAI's Chief Economist and Acting CEO said, "With two years of the Index we can now clearly see the impact that COVID has had on people seeking a regional lifestyle.

“It is particularly exciting that many of the smaller

regions showing high rates of growth are inland towns.

“It looks like the pandemic is changing some long-established movement paths, which is a good sign for more balanced population growth across Australia in the future."

While net migration to the regions remains strong, the number of people relocating to the regions in the December 2021 quarter was down ten percent compared to the previous quarter.

Newcastle Airport named on Bonza’s inaugural route map BONZA, Australia’s only independent low-cost carrier, together with Newcastle Airport, has announced a

This was partly due to the high movement already seen in previous quarters, as well as seasonal conditions, and accelerated regional housing price growth.

Looking at the full year, the Gold Coast remained the most popular destination among metro-movers in 2021, welcoming eleven percent of all people who moved from capital cities.

The Sunshine Coast wasn’t far behind (five percent), followed by Greater Geelong (four percent) and Wollongong (three percent).

Australia’s two largest capital cities saw the Sunshine Coast and twice weekly to the Whitsundays Coast - an entirely new route.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the announcement was an exciting one.

“We’re also offering, via the app, the chance to win flights.”

Flights are due to go on sale within the next eight weeks, pending regulatory approval.

Smuggler wins 2022 Sydney to Bass Island Yacht race

THE 90 nautical mile 2021 Sydney to Bass Island Race was held on Saturday 5 February 2022, with Tea Gardens' own Steve Taylor competing as the navigator on ‘Smuggler’.

The fleet of nine yachts left from near Shark Island in Sydney Harbour at 10AM and sailed south to Bass Island of Wollongong into a 25 knot south easterly and heavy seas.

Smuggler won the race taking both line and all handicap honours.

“She led from the start and won all three handicaps, the IRC, PHS and ORCi, winning in an elapsed time of 7 hours, 57 minutes and 45 seconds, more than four hours clear of the second placed yacht, Mark Gorbatov’s Beneteau First 40 Blink,” Steve Taylor told

Smuggler’s corrected time of 10:54:02 was more than two hours faster than second placed IRC handicap, David Henry’s Philosopher.

Blink was second across the line for third place on IRC, with Kim Jaggar’s Sydney 38 Cinquante four minutes behind to finish third on PHS. “Smuggler and our crew thrive in strong conditions and once again she’s proven what a great sea boat she is,” Mr Taylor said.

The second race in the three-race Summer Offshore Series was a 100 nautical mile Virtual Mark Race on Saturday 19 February, followed by the Montague Island Race on Friday 18 March.

There were 322 entrants.

From these, fifteen women and eight men secured their place in the 2022 Australian Indoor Championship to be played at Tweed Heads from 15–19 August.

By Marian SAMPSON SCHOOL representative sports events will return from this week, allowing students to travel to compete after an almost year long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The return of school representative sport provides much-needed

stimulus to regional communities with statewide championships and trials adding up to almost $20 million for local communities annually.

More than 100 statewide championships and trials involving 28 sports are held across NSW each year.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said, like so

many school students, she is excited to see representative sport kick off again.

“This is just another step in schools returning to business as usual and highlights the effectiveness of our planning in keeping students safe,” Ms Mitchell said.

Roads to the past

By Anne JOHNSON, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family History Research Group WHEN I take note of the traffic on our roads today, I am sure our forebears would be amazed!

My grandfather, William Ward, who retired to our area, was the first to drive a car over the road into Tea Gardens.

We believe the car was a 1911 Maxwell.

The photo shows William and Helen Ward about 1920 with their son Alf and daughter Helen holding baby Frank who was

born in June 1919.

On 13 June 1919 the Dungog Chronicle reported, “The Progress Association plan to get a grant of 1,000 pounds and to borrow 2,000 pounds to make the road to Tea Gardens suitable for motor traffic.”

In 1921 the Yates brothers, Aaron and Stanley, commenced a car service between Newcastle and Tea Gardens.

Alf Ward bought the service from them in the late 1920s and continued it, increasing to buses, until the 1950s.

You can't just dognap Claudice (do you notice how you call this animal by name each time, such is the level of misplaced affection you've developed?).

This is another person's dog, and that person has entrusted you to care for the dog in the manner it has been brought up in, not to develop some sort of weird intimate relationship where you are now sleeping and drooling together on the same pillow!

James, get a grip!

Over the next week, you'll need to have a conscious uncoupling with the poor creature.

I suggest you start tonight with a bed in the laundry (just for the dog, in case you have visions of both of you in there). If you need some four-legged company, you will need to get your own pet.

I'd also suggest declining any future requests for dog minding until you learn some detachment strategies.

As usual, the 4x 50m Freestyle Relays (Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Relays) were all hotly contested with Myall Masters blitzing the pool to win each of these events in their combined age categories.

Thanks to the team effort of the Myall competitors, Myall Masters Club won the carnival with 554 points. Second place went to Port Macquarie with 487 points, closely followed by Warringah achieving 472 points.

Apart from the odd shower and at times threatening clouds the weather held out and the water was a perfect race pace temperature.

All participants had a most enjoyable day with visiting participants very appreciative of the Myall Masters hospitality. Many of these visitors also chose to have an extended weekend in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, thus boosting local business recovery.

Thanks must be extended to all the officials who allowed this carnival to run so efficiently.

Also to our friendly members and partners who willingly volunteered their time, before, during and after the carnival.

You helped make this event such a success.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By John SLATER 16 FEBRUARY A wonderful summer’s day attracted 52 players for the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

The Club welcomed 4 visitors as well as an old colleague, Pip Sullivan.

The morning winners were decided by the 'highest winning margin' and with a 22-point margin Rick Islaub, Hilton Newman and Doug Andrews were successful.

The afternoon game was won by Tom Short, Dennis Ashbridge and Geoff Muggleton with the result decided by the 'lowest winning score'.

They had 12 points.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Geoff Page.

20 February The Sunday bowlers enjoyed another well patronised morning with a good field of 24 players.

The past few Sundays have seen steady numbers for Sunday bowls, and it is encouraging to not only see it well patronised but new players are emerging all the time.

Today was no exception with Joanne and Michael Osborn visiting from Stockton and Colin and Chrissy Buddle and Debbie Gardner giving bowls a try.

The winners with the highest winning

score were Col Buddle, Debbie Gardner and John Slater.

Following on the Sunday bowlers today was a 'Sponsors Day' organised by the Men’s Bowling Club Management Committee.

The aim of the day was to thank our various sponsors who generously provide the necessary funds for the Club to pay for the costs associated with the Pennant season.

The event attracted 56 representatives from several local businesses in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest community.

Contestants were playing for the coveted 'Golden Bowl' trophy.

There were some bowling club players mingling in the various teams but on a whole most fielded teams with limited bowling experience.

Watching proceedings, I was pleasantly surprised just how well players adjusted to the game and many revealed some hidden talent that with a bit of coaching would see them taking up the sport.

Best of all, everyone had a great time.

The winners of the 'Golden Bowl' trophy were the team from local solicitors, Purcell and Mount.

They comprised Stephen Mount, Jeff Farmer and Anthony Grant.

Thanks go to Club President, Noel Jackson, who organised the day and Management Committee members Hilton Newman, Gary Wynne and Doug Andrews for a great post-match barbeque.

ON Saturday 12 February, fun, fitness and friendship prevailed when Myall Masters Swim Club again hosted what has become a highlight of the NSW Masters Swimming Calendar.

Our very popular and competitive swimming carnival attracted teams from the Sydney Metropolitan and Greater Sydney Region, the Central Coast, the Hunter Region, as far north as the Clarence River and as far south as Oak Flats.

The ages of the competitors ranged from 22 years old to 90 years young.

This year 24 clubs participated in our carnival.

Of the 135 competitors who participated in the carnival, Myall Masters had a strong and enthusiastic contingent of 17 members.

All Myall Swimmers performed admirably on the day, with many boasting swims of personal bests.

Some notable and outstanding results of our local competitors include Leon Bobako who finished overall 1st in the Men’s 70-

74 yrs competing in 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly, 25m and 50m freestyle and attaining all 1sts in these four events.

Luke Rochester our youngest member, finished overall 1st in the Men’s 18-24 yrs with 1st places in 25m breaststroke and 25m and 50m freestyle and Christine Sefton finished overall 1st in the Women’s 50-55yrs with all firsts in 200m and 25m freestyle and 25m and 50m breaststroke events.
