AUSSIE Helpers is calling on everyday Australians to help make Christmas feasible for hundreds of farming families around Australia by purchasing hampers of essential goods.

The economic burden of years of drought coupled with a crippling pandemic means many farming families are facing the very real prospect of skipping Christmas due to financial stress.

In the Myall Coast, smoke from fires in the surrounding suburbs meant that clear skies or beaches were nowhere to be seen.

According to the Word Wildlife Foundation, nearly three billion animals were killed or displaced in the 2019-20 bushfires, including: 143 million mammals, 2.46 billion reptiles, 180 million birds and 51 million frogs.

As well as this, 34 people were killed in the fires and over eighteen million hectares of land was destroyed.

Although the 2020-21 Summer season is not expected to be as cruel as the previous year, preparation has already begun to prevent another horrific summer season.

Section 18 of the Duties Act can be utilised in the event that a property is purchased by a party who subsequently realises that it would be more favourable if the property were purchased by a related person.

For example, a husband may attend an auction and be the successful bidder.

After the auction he signs the contract and the contracts are exchanged. He is committed to the purchase. If the purchaser then gets advice from his accountant that his wife (or another related person) would be a more favourable purchaser, then the transfer of the property can be to the wife notwithstanding the terms of the contract. The additional duty payable is $10.00. In other words, although the husband was the successful bidder, the wife can be the ultimate owner of the property.

A related person under the Act includes the spouse or de facto spouse of the purchaser, the parent, child, brother or sister of the purchaser. A list

of who is a related person to the purchaser is defined in the dictionary of the Act. Care must be taken if Section 18 is to be utilised that the related person fits within into the definition of the Act. If the transferee does not, then Revenue NSW will insist on stamp duty being paid by the transferee in addition to the stamp duty being paid by the purchaser.

It follows that whilst this Section can be of assistance, care must be taken. However, the section can be helpful where a person cannot attend an auction or a person would like to secure a property and must exchange contracts without delay to avoid losing the property. In that event, if the ultimate transferee (and therefore owner) of the property is "related person" then Revenue NSW will not impose double duty.

High School Orientation ON Tuesday, 1 December, Year 6 students from Booral, Tea Gardens and Bungwahl, as well as a number of other schools, joined with Bulahdelah Central School Year 6 students to begin their transition into High School.

Led by Student Representative Council (SRC) students and student volunteers, initially the Year 6 students

undertook a tour of the school - including the completion of a quiz.

Even current BCS students found this a challenge!

Following the tour, Year 6 undertook a series of minilessons with their Year 7 teachers.

Activities included exciting science experiments with Jess Amos, a playdough challenge with Michael Kiernan and personalised badge making with Sue

Students also enjoyed a sausage sizzle hosted by the SRC and finished the day with Physical Education activities in the Gym with Tyson Oakley.

Year 7 Advisor Casey Connell said she hoped the day helped to prepare the incoming students for their transition to high school.

“Hopefully, Year 6 students are feeling more confident about their next stage of their educational journey and are looking forward to joining us as much as we are looking forward to having them here at BCS,” she said.

Concerns after privacy breach

MISSION Australia has accidentally leaked the personal details of more than 1400 housing tenants from the Mid North Coast in what is being called a massive privacy breach.

In an email viewed by News Of The Area, Mission Australia attached a document containing the names, addresses, emails and phone numbers of tenants to an email addressed to residents warning of upcoming severe

weather.

One tenant who asked to remain anonymous said the privacy breach could have severe implications for residents who have escaped domestic violence or child abuse if the personal information was to be accessed by perpetrators.

News Of The Area spoke to two tenants about the privacy leak, both of whom were upset about the breach.

“I don’t have any issues with hiding from people, but there’s going to be a lot who

do,” said one tenant.

“If it leaks out, it’s going to be really really bad, there could be perpetrators who are out there that have not been jailed and are in the housing system somewhere and might be able to find people through this.”

In a followup email, Mission Australia asked recipients to delete the leaked information and to confirm when they had done so.

“I think it’s disgusting to be honest,” said another tenant.

“Myself and a few other people I know on the list have

escaped domestic violence or violent situations that have people looking for them to harm them,” they said.

Mission Australia’s General Manager Davina Lormas did provide an apology in the followup email but one tenant said the response was not good enough and that legal action was being considered.

“A very simple fix to this, that would have prevented this, is if Mission Australia had followed privacy laws,” they said.

“With documentation

like that, that has that many people’s details on it, (sic) it should have been password protected.”

In a statement provided to News Of The Area, Mission Australia apologised for the breach.

“Mission Australia is deeply sorry that this has occurred,” the statement said.

“We are in the process of contacting all affected tenants to provide support as needed. ”As always, we encourage our tenants to discuss anything with us.

Man arrested following investigation

q Strike Force Brombal was established in June 2020 to investigate a transnational gambling syndicate.

ORGANISED Crime Squad detectives have arrested a man following an investigation into an alleged gambling syndicate placing corrupt bets on international table tennis tournaments.

In June this year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, with assistance from Sport Integrity Australia, established Strike Force Brombal to investigate a transnational gambling syndicate allegedly placing corrupt bets on international table tennis tournaments.

Inquiries revealed a 40-year-old Broadmeadow

man received information relating to fixed table tennis matches in Europe.

Corrupt bets were subsequently placed on the matches, resulting in winnings valued at $500,000.

Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives executed nine search warrants at homes at Broadmeadow, Wickham, Hamilton, Stockton, Cameron Park, Hawks Nest and Shortland from 6am on Wednesday 16 December 2020.

It remains unclear how many tenants received the leaked information and if any further breaches have occurred.

A 40-year-old man was arrested at a home at Broadmeadow and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where charges are expected to be laid.

The Spider’s Gift - A Christmas Poem

THE donkey stopped by the stable door, the star beamed bright above, the gentle maid sank on fresh, sweet sweet straw and gave birth to her own, dear love.

Then she wrapped Him tight in swaddling cloths and places Him where cattle fed; for the town had no room for her infant son, so a manger served as His bed.

The spider scurried across the floor, and picked its way up the wall, and settled itself in a comfy niche right over the cattle stall.

It gazed in awe as three great men - rich eastern clothes, they wore came in, and worshipped the tiny babe and offered the presents they bore.

The Child-King slept, the young mother too, the father watched over the pair; the spider visualised it could give,

You see It isn't the really expensive gifts of the gold and silver kind, nor the jewels from Earth's Treasure Chest that The Father has in mind: but rather, the simple joys of of life taken from Creation's Store that please the eye, and warm the heart, and bring Gods peace, for evermore.

So the next time you find a wild creature's home don't sweep it away with a broom; it's likely the Christ-Child's first delight was work from a spider's loom....

WELL, what a busy year our ladies have had.

Despite the two and a half months hiatus, or maybe because of it, our trading tables held an abundance of lovely useful items which sold like hot cakes.

Two of our members made and sold face masks.

A special green and red mask hit the mark with a Souths supporter.

Funds raised from both these events will go toward donations to community groups in 2021.

Last years’ raffles were well supported which enabled us to donate to the Rural Fire Service, the Clinic Bus and the Cancer Council.

Presents for our local Meals on Wheels recipients were wrapped and toys and Christmas items were delivered to the Salvation Army at Raymond Terrace.

A big thank you must go to our Community for the wonderful support of our fundraising events.

Our year ended with the AGM and, as always, with a delicious luncheon at Mumm’s.

Our first day back in 2021 is Wednesday 13 January at 9am at the Community Hall, Hawks Nest.

We are the parents of teenage children which, as you know, means they want very little to do with us. That's not the problem. The problem is we have friends with four young children who also happen to be feral. They come over and terrorise our pets (and us). The parents seem oblivious. How do we deal with this?

Henry and June W. Oh, Henry and June, WHEN you say they are feral, do you mean they are a bit loud and boisterous, or do you mean they are the type of kids who are liable to set your cat on fire if you turn away for a few moments. Regardless, I can hear them now, racing around your precariously arranged garden ornaments, squealing like stuck pigs, using your rake, gardening shears and garden hose to truss each other up and inflict corporal punishment because their parents let them watch Vikings instead of Play School and so on. What tends to happen in these situations is the menfolk retreat to the shed to have a much-needed beer, and you get stuck with the little treasures, dividing your time between averting medical emergencies and hiding in the bathroom to pop a sedative or two.

Look, you have paid your penance for procreating, and now it's time to revel in the fact that your kids wake up after you and then slink off, grunting occasionally and chiming in when they smell dinner.

Life is calm, and you don't need to have it disrupted by these wild juvenile miscreants. May I suggest a lock on your gate, or perhaps one of those special monitors that requires a password for entry. Alternatively, always arrange to meet at their house. That way you can determine when you've had enough and leave. It's not up to you to have to discipline someone else's offspring. If the parents can't do it, maybe you need to set them free along with the free spirits they've brought into the world. Find some new friends with children of a similar age to yours.

Swimming pool petition

WITH the recent NSW COVID-19 updated easing restrictions, residents of the MidCoast are calling for Council action to reopen pools.

The aim of the petition is to re-open public pools for general use before Christmas in the Tea Gardens, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Nabiac and Krambach regions.

An online petition has been created with almost 500 signatures and numerous shares across social media platforms with large engagement.

Many are sharing their reasons for signing through

the comment section, citing why opening the public pools is important for themselves and the community.

Katie Howard said, “My family uses the Nabiac pool every day throughout summer and after the year it’s been, everyone could use some leisure.

“Also swimming is a vital skill for children and without our pools open, they will be set back in their learning and this is hazardous.”

Johanna Conroy of Bulahdelah commented, “I would like to be able to take my children to the local pool.

It is close to home and I feel safer supervising my children swimming in a pool than the

surf which can be dangerous at times.

“And on really hot days I enjoy a dip also.

Please pay a COVID supervisor so our Bulahdelah pool can open this summer.”

Many members of the community cited reasons of safety, community and importantly, that major cities have already opened up their local pools, questioning why the MidCoast hasn’t yet.

Katrina Mason is a counsellor and training facilitator committed to helping people achieve balance in their lives using techniques such as mindfulness and meditation.

She told News Of The Area, “It is easy to get caught up in the endless pressure of expectations

Motorists will begin to see the ‘Holiday Time; Slow Down, Kids Around’ signage around the beaches, parks and other busy recreational locations, urging people to slow down and take extra care on local roads during the holiday period.

MidCoast Council Mayor David West said school holiday periods created a surge in the number of children using local roads and paths.

“The message ‘Holiday Time; Slow Down, Kids Around’ is a highly visible and timely reminder about the importance of road safety, for both residents and visitors to be more aware of the increase in pedestrian activity in our area,” Mayor West said.

“With more kids around

it’s really important for all motorists to stay aware and vigilant on the road. Kids can react impulsively and forget about road safety.

“That is why the Holiday Time campaign is so important.

“It puts the onus on drivers, parents and carers to recognise the potential danger in busy holiday spots and take extra precautions to ensure our kids are kept safe.”

Michelle and David McLaughlin founded Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation after tragically losing their son Tom in a pedestrian accident.

They now devote their time to ensuring other families don’t go through what they have and channel their energy into making school holidays safer for children.

“Tragically, Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics data reveals that since January

2014 till August 2020, 391 children, including Tom, have lost their lives to road trauma.

“Further, The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicates that the most common cause of death of children aged 1-14 years is road trauma,” Michelle explained.

“Holiday destinations will be even busier this year due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

“For children and their families, these new environments are most often unfamiliar with key visual roadway differences, including lack of kerbs/ guttering, no line markings or footpaths,” Michelle said.

"We lost our precious son, Tom in the blink of an eye.

“We don’t want this to happen to anyone else. The cost is just too high. That’s why the 'Holiday Time, Slow Down Kids Around' message is so important," Michelle added.

Michelle said Little Blue Dinosaur was excited to be working with MidCoast

that Christmas brings and forget about how important a little bit of self care can be when we feel under pressure.

“The truth is many of us feel mixed emotions around this time as we celebrate with loved ones, whilst at the same time wrestling a sense of longing for those we have lost.”

Mindfulness is a brilliant tool for reducing stress and increasing your capacity for navigating tricky emotions.

“Often mindfulness and Council again in 2020, with the campaign now supported by 65 councils across four States in Australia.

“No cheese cloth or uncomfortable positions required,” she said.

Katrina has some mindfulness tips for the holidays which include, getting clear about what’s important to you, she suggests that you take a few moments to clarify and then navigate the season and prioritize.

She believes that when

Safe Christmas

SUMMER is well underway with holidays just around the corner.

There are a few things to keep in mind these Christmas Holidays whilst spending time around the water.

In 2020 alone, 258 people have lost their lives to drowning (Royal Life Saving Australia).

As a general reminder, children should be supervised around bodies of water at all times, even if they are competent swimmers.

Always observe safety signs, and follow directions given by Lifeguards.

Never swim alone and even in familiar places use the buddy system.

Remain hydrated and ensure to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shelter from the sun and slide on sunglasses to protect yourself from Australia’s sun and UV rays.

Boaters should ensure that all occupants wear lifejackets that are properly fitted and effective.

Weather conditions can change rapidly, so it is always recommended to check the weather before and during water activities.

Alcohol should never be consumed in or around water, particularly if operating a

watercraft.

In line with the Australian Government, COVID-19 regulations are still in place and social distancing should be observed.

Steven Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving New South Wales said, “Our volunteer lifesavers are on the beach to protect the community and to save lives.

“We ask that beachgoers abide by the social distancing order put in place by the NSW Government.

“It’s important to respect any advice given to you by a surf lifesaver to vacate a beach.

“It’s for your own safety and the safety of the community as a whole.”

President v Secretary Trophy Day SPORTS

ON Tuesday 15 December, Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club members enjoyed Break Up Day, combined with President v Secretary Trophy Day. Members dressed in their best Christmas attire, with thirty one bowlers participating in this event.

Teams are randomly drawn, (apart from past Presidents/Secretaries), and the format for play is "turn around", 2 bowls Triples, 15 ends.

The final score of each team is tallied and the team with the most points is the winner of the Trophy.

The President's teams were the winners scoring 84

v the Secretary's 58.

Following play all members enjoyed lunch, a present swap, raffles and celebrating Judi Polak's "0" birthday.

Many thanks to our Social Committee for making this day such a success and for all your hard work during the year.

Bowls will recommence on Tuesday 12 January, 2021.

IT’S a journey unlike any other - Melbourne to Cairns on a skateboard - and a mission Tom Drury, aka Gordy Fruito wants to be the first to complete.

The mammoth 3600 km ride is for a good cause, with Mr Fruito raising money to build a skatepark in Laos - the only country in South East Asia without one.

The 28-year-old from Broken Hill was inspired to make the trip after living in Laos where he worked as tour guide and English teacher.

“I was there for three or four years and when I first went there ten years ago

skateboarding was just being introduced and over time and since I’ve been back it's just getting bigger and bigger,” he said.

“There’s a really big culture but nowhere for them to skate, they just skate on the street, temples and in car parks.”

Mr Fruito has already completed the first leg of the journey, from Melbourne to Sydney, in less than a month and he hopes to arrive in Cairns by mid-March or early April.

Taking the coastal route via the Princes Highway, Mr Fruito averaged 60 to 70 km a day, skating from 7am to 5pm and couch surfing along the way.

“This whole trip is funded by me and my biggest expense is accommodation, so I’ve been pretty blessed with people putting me up,” he said.

Mr Fruito is hoping to raise $25,000 to build the skatepark, working with Make Life Skate Life, a non-forprofit organisation that has already built ten skateparks in developing countries around the world.

“Skateboarding has always been a big part of my life and I’ve been skating since I was young. It’s a creative outlet, it’s good exercise and it’s got a great culture,” said Mr Fruito.
