PPE supplies for Karuah community

PORT Stephens Hunter Police have been distributing COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) to community groups and organisations across Port Stephens, in conjunction with Port Stephens Council.

Port Stephens Council’s Deputy Mayor Paul Le Mottee joined NSW Police Inspectors Chad Giles and Rob Post at Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) late last week to deliver 6000 face masks, 48 bottles of sanitiser and 200 packets of cleaning wipes.

Council has also provided face mask recycling bins.

Karuah LALC Chief Executive Officer Dave Kernick said access to PPE was critical to minimising the spread of COVID-19 in the Karuah Mission.

Port Stephens Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON) Inspector Daniel Skelly said the PPE will

help some of our community’s most vulnerable.

“Providing this essential equipment will ensure some of our community’s most vital organisations can continue to operate safely.

“Many of these groups are working harder now than ever, and this is when they need our support the most.

“It’s great we’re able to work together with Port Stephens Council and the entire LEMC to protect these organisations,” Inspector Skelly said.

Bulk PPE is being made available thanks to Resilience NSW and Healthshare, who provide the items to NSW Councils to equip community organisations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Rural Road Safety September is Rural Road Safety Month and Police are reminding rural residents to slow down and buckle up.

“It only takes a couple of seconds to put on your seatbelt.

“Don’t get complacent – always buckle up and remind your passengers to do the same.

Identifications Needed Identification is required for a female that may be able to assist Police in relation to a stealing offense at Medowie on 3 August.

Motorbike death A man has died following a single motorbike crash in the Hunter Region on Saturday 18 September at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Sailors Way, Raymond Terrace.

Emergency services were called to the scene after an unregistered motorbike collided with the curb, ejecting a 36-year-old male rider and six-year-old female passenger.

The male passed away at the scene and was not wearing a helmet.

The female passenger was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries.

FOUR local roadside rest areas will be upgraded to help combat driver fatigue along the Pacific Highway through the MidCoast and Port Stephens.

Federal funding of close to $300,000 under the Driver Reviver Site Upgrade Program will upgrade Driver Reviver signage and amenities.

Browns Flat and Nerong, with a further $118,000.00 to be spent on improving signage at the Raymond Terrace Driver Reviver Site. $25,000.00 will be provided for the replacement of the Amenities Block roof at the iKew Visitor Information Centre in Kew. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie MP said he also wanted to thank the generosity of local volunteers who give

many hours providing their help at Driver Reviver centres.

Dementia and Discrimination

DEMENTIA Action Week 2021 runs from 2026 September.

Tuesday 21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day. Recent research conducted by Dementia Australia has identified that discrimination against people living with dementia is real and so entrenched that even those at risk expect to experience some form of discrimination.

The Dementia Action Week Report ‘Discrimination and dementia - enough is enough’, has found more than two-thirds of people living with dementia anticipated they might experience discrimination.

Maree McCabe AM, CEO Dementia Australia, said the research shows that people living with dementia and carers experience discrimination that can lead to social isolation, loneliness and poor mental

health.

COVID-19 has been found to have intensified these experiences.

“We need to change this experience for people impacted by dementia.

“People living with dementia, their families and carers tell us enough is enough,” Ms McCabe said.

“Now more than ever we need to shift our thinking around dementia to stop adding discrimination to the symptoms that people with dementia experience.

“The good news is a little support does make a big difference and there are small actions we can all take to make a change for the better.”

Bobby Redman lives with dementia and has shared her story as part of this year’s Dementia Action Week campaign.

CHANGES to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) will see the Hunter region join a list of 16 local government areas where gas exploration and production is prohibited.

The NSW Government has given effect to its Future of Gas Statement, with historic amendments to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP), helping deliver a 77 per cent reduction of areas available for gas exploration in NSW. Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Resources John Barilaro said the changes reflect the NSW Government’s commitment to support sustainable gas exploration in the state and provide certainty to industry and communities.

Mr Barilaro said gas exploration and production is now prohibited in 16 Local Government Areas across the Central West,

“The remaining active Petroleum Exploration Licences (PELs) will ensure the viability of the Narrabri Gas Project, which is a crucial project for regional economies and vital for manufacturers and heavy energy users while keeping power prices down.

“When we formed government in 2011, almost half of NSW was the subject of a gas exploration title or application. Today’s changes provide certainty to industry and communities, cutting that to just 1.5 per cent of the State.”

Others felt that they were patronised and treated as though they are not smart.

The impact of COVID has been great on those with dementia with 34% of family carers and 30% of people living with dementia indicated their physical wellbeing had declined due to COVID-19 restrictions.

World Mental Health Day is coming up – on 10 October.

There are some great associated awareness raising campaigns – such as https:// www.who.int/campaigns/worldmental-health-day and https:// lookafteryourmentalhealth australia.org.au/ All of which got me thinking about mental health and family law.

As you can easily imagine, family law and mental health go hand-in-hand.

All relationships and families go through difficult times.

But if someone is experiencing depression, stress, substance abuse or any number of other mental health illnesses, it can bring about the end of a relationship. Domestic violence, financial problems and the effects of addiction are also frequently named as causes of relationship breakdown.

Even if mental health was not a factor in the breakdown of the relationship – dealing with the decision to end a relationship can itself cause stress, anxiety and depression.

There are a lot of organisations out there who offer services designed especially for families experiencing mental health issues. Both Interrelate Family Centres and Relationships Australia offer a range of counselling and programs – including ones designed specifically for people who are separating, as well as counselling in relation to family violence and problem gambling.

Other organisations - such as Alcoholics Anonymous, the Financial Counselling Helpline and Newcastle Domestic Violence Resource Centre - offer issues specific assistance. In addition, there are counselling services such as Lifeline (lifeline. org.au) and the Kids Helpline available to help.

While the law has to keep adapting to ensure that it can best respond to each person – it has come a ways when it comes to mental health.

ACON has received a share of the NSW Government’s $8 million Suicide Prevention Fund.

The LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual) community is one of the most at-risk communities in terms of suicide attempts, with LGBTQIA+ youth from 16 to 27 five times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population.

Due to stigma, past trauma and social isolation, many members of this community struggle with mental health.

ACON is NSW’s largest LGBTI+ health organisation and has spent over 35 years working to create opportunities for people in their community to live their healthiest lives, striving to be a global leader in community health, inclusion and HIV responses for people of diverse sexualities

ACON’s Acting Director of Community Health, Teddy Cook spoke to News Of The Area about this funding and how ACON is working to help regional and isolated members of the LGBTI+ community.

“Part of this funding is to help us increase the level of our services for people who are in crisis and people who have recently made an attempt.

“We will be providing ‘aftercare’ support which helps support counselling, care coordination and peer support, which we are very excited about.

“We know that when people are linked into inclusive and affirming mental health support, they are considerably less likely to experience suicidality,” Teddy said This part of ACON’s service will also include a care coordinator and a peer worker based out of the Newcastle office that will provide support to regional

communities in the Myall Coast and Port Stephens’ region through Telehealth.

“For the first time ever, we’ve been able to receive enough funding to develop a statewide program that can target these regional areas,” Teddy said.

The second stream of funding received is to develop the first website of its kind for communities in NSW- an LGBTQIA+, Queer and Transgender friendly mental health and recovery website with access to information and resources, as well as queer education workshops and videos which will primarily be held online.

ACON are excited to be able to provide this support to the community to help bring down the suicidality and mental health risks for members of the LGBTI+ community.

Crime Statistics update

NEW statistics published by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) have shown that crime across NSW has primarily remained stable across the past two years.

This report details trends in criminal incidents, violent and property offences over the 60 months to June 2021.

Overall, the Mid North Coast statistical area (including MidCoast) had an annual change of 17.6% of violent offences in the past two years, and 4.9% in the past five years.

The only major offence to show a significant upward trend in the 24 months

to June 2021 was sexual assault. Recorded incidents of sexual assault rose 21.0% yearon-year to June 2021 (up 1,367 incidents).

In the twelve months to June 2021, the Mid-Coast region reported zero murder cases and one case of robbery with a firearm.

There was a significant number of Domestic Violence related assaults (527) and Sexual Assault incidents (135) as well as over 800 incidents of malicious damage to property.

Fourteen incidents of robbery without a weapon were reported with seven cases of robbery with a weapon not a firearm stated.

These statistics show an overall slight rise in crime in the area over the 2020-21

period.

Over the past two years, the region has noticed a 14.0% decrease in stealing from motor vehicles and 33.0% decrease in stealing from retail stores.

BOCSAR Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald expects that in the time since this data was collected, crime trends will have been significantly impacted by the current COVID lockdown.

“We know from 2020 that stay at home orders interrupt criminal activity and lead to sharp falls in many crimes.

“The impact of the most recent restrictions will be closely monitored in the coming months as NSW residents gradually resume regular activities,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

STAYING safe in the surf has changed over the years.

Now swimmers will be protected by two additional layers of protection on Port Stephens Beaches with Drones and listening devices being employed to detect sharks.

More than 50 beaches will be patrolled this season and 200 UAV pilots employed to watch over swimmers and surfers through an expanded shark surveillance program in NSW. Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW), with the support of the Department of Primary Industries, will provide UAV coverage in every coastal LGA in the state, with flights commencing this weekend to coincide with the start of

surf patrols by lifesavers and lifeguards.

Over 200 pilots employed along the NSW coastline, predominantly in regional areas with these pilots expected to deliver in excess of 25,000 flights across the 50 locations.

Fingal Bay SLSC is just one of the new UAV Patrol Locations on the NSW coast; it joins Tea Gardens – Hawks Nest SLSC and Birubi SLSC in deploying the technology.

The cost-effective, noninvasive UAV technology has proven to be successful at keeping swimmers and surfers safe, while minimising the impact on marine life.

Although the case was centred around Facebook, the High Court’s ruling affects all social media platforms such as Twitter or Instagram, other social media and websites that have a comments section.

In other words, anyone who is responsible for managing and running a social media platform or website that invites readers, members of the public or group members to share

Measures that can be put into place to ensure that no defamatory comments are published include: disabling comments if moderation is not possible, using tools including keyword and profanity blockers or offensive comment blockers, restricting who can respond to posts.

An insurance toolkit is in the final stages of development and will provide guidance to staff in relation to ensuring appropriate insurances are in place, checked and reviewed as part of Council’s procurement processes and events management activities.

‘Stop the Stigma’ of child abuse

TWO of Australia’s foremost child safety advocates, Australian of the Year Grace Tame and Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews have launched a new campaign to help spark a national conversation about child sexual abuse.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) is leading the ‘Stop the Stigma' initiative.

The partnership involves the AFP, Grace Tame, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, Carly Ryan Foundation, Bravehearts, YourTown (Kid’s helpline) and Act for Kids.

‘Stop the Stigma’ is the first national project designed to help end public stigma about child abuse, and was developed between Australian law enforcement, non-government organisations and industry.

It is designed to send a strong signal to victims and the community that this vitally important issue has to be a two-way conversation in that if victims are brave enough to speak up, the community needs to be brave enough to listen and act.

ACCCE research has shown that 21 per cent of parents and carers say child sexual abuse is too

confrontational to think about – and more than one in 10 parents would be too embarrassed to talk about it if their child was exploited.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said keeping children safe online and offline was a Government priority.

“We encourage children to speak up if they’re offered a ride with a stranger,” Minister Andrews said.

“Keeping children safe from sexual exploitation shouldn’t be embarrassing or shameful – we all have a part to play in this important conversation.

“Child abuse thrives in the shadows, speaking up is difficult but it educates the unaware, protects the innocent, gives a voice to victims, and brings offenders to justice.”

Grace Tame, who was recognised as Australian of the Year in January for her successful fight to overturn a Tasmanian law that gagged rape victims speaking publicly about their experiences, said every voice mattered.

“Discussion of child sexual abuse can be uncomfortable but so too talking about suicide and domestic violence,” Grace said.

“Now we talk about preventing suicide and

domestic violence regularly, and it has greatly benefited society because it has driven new laws and more funding to support those who need it.

“We need to talk about child sexual abuse too.”

Latest figures from the ACCCE show that specialist child protection police more than doubled the number of charges laid in the 202021 financial year with total arrests rising 45 per cent.

The figures highlight the urgent need for Australians to confront the topic as silence only helps perpetrators hide their crimes.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Northern Command Lesa Gale said receiving support throughout the community would help law enforcement identify perpetrators and remove victims from harm.

“We must open the discussion about child sexual abuse so we can reduce the stigma and build awareness about a heinous crime that is far too prevalent,” Assistant Commissioner Gale said.

“We have to remember that some victims are still not survivors because they are still in reach of their perpetrators.

Kids Helpline also recorded a 40 per cent surge in reports of child sexual abuse in the first six months

of 2021, compared with the same period in 2020.

Award for commitment to sustainability MIDCOAST Council has been recognised as a Bronze Partner of Sustainability Advantage in acknowledgement of its significant environmental achievements.

Sustainability Advantage is a program of the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment that supports organisations who commit to sustainable practices and achieve improved outcomes in sustainability across their business.

“Council’s organisational vision and roadmap includes a transformational project to develop a sustainability action plan that embeds sustainability in everything we do,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager of Natural Systems, Gerard Tuckerman.

“There are many actions we’re undertaking across our operations to make sure we do that, and we know MidCoast residents are extremely interested in what

we’re doing to commit to sustainability.”

Council recently adopted a Climate Change Strategy which commits it to achieve 100% renewable energy and net zero emissions by 2040, along with net zero emissions from landfill by 2050.

In addition, Council has a target to achieve a 75% diversion rate of waste from landfill to recycling.

The progress towards these goals will be reported annually, and there is a way to go after several factors impacted the results for 2019-20.

The devastating bushfires across the MidCoast in that year meant that there was an increase in waste going to landfill, and it’s likely that when figures are available for 2020-21, we’ll see a corresponding result due to the clean-up after the flood event of March 2021.

While Council’s electricity consumption has held steady, water usage across the region

has reduced as a result of the drought and the excellent uptake of water restrictions by residents across the MidCoast region.

Council’s fuel consumption, particularly diesel, was reduced by 233 kilolitres compared to 201819.

“We’re really looking forward to making some significant sustainability gains in the coming years, and the retrofitting of over 5,000 streetlights to LEDs and the recent installation of a 160kW solar panel system at Yalawanyi Ganya, along with consolidating our office administration, should begin to make a real difference in our electricity consumption,” added Mr Tuckerman.

“It’s important to note that Council’s wastewater treatment and water supply facilities such as Bootawa Dam account for 65% of Council’s total electricity consumption, and so Council will be investing heavily in

COUNCIL Round-Up

By Cr Len ROBERTS Sewage Testing PEOPLE have been concerned about the lack of sewage testing for our area.

It is important to note that whilst the sewage samples are taken by Council staff, it is done so at the request and authority of NSW Health.

Council has no say in the timing nor the program.

Following calls by ratepayers for testing at Hawks Nest; Council, as well as our local Member Kate Washington, asked NSW Health for Hawks Nest to be included.

However, advice on this matter was that we were not a priority as we were considered “low risk” and that resources needed to be expended in areas of concern.

MYALL COASTNews Of The Area Probably, following on from Covid detection at Karuah, NSW Health have requested expansion of our weekly testing to include the Hawks Nest STP (which also covers Tea Gardens) from this week.

This will bring the number of sites tested in the MidCoast Area to four: Dawson (Taree) STP, Hallidays Point STP, Forster STP and Hawks Nest (Tea Gardens) STP. Samples are taken on Tuesday with results expected late Thursday afternoon or Friday.

We only usually get advised if there is a detection.

If the tests are clear then more often than not, we won’t be told.

Let’s hope we stay clear.

TGHN Swimming pool MidCoast Council currently operates the Tea Gardens swimming pool primarily as an unsupervised seasoning swimming pool.

Normally, the pool is open from October to April with lifeguard services being provided during the Christmas school holiday break.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in the pool being closed to the wider community.

Several small community groups have continued to use pools under individual Covid safety plans.

The pool was closed to the general public last year as Council was unable to meet the requirements set out in the swimming pool covid safety plan (Health Order) as it was an unsupervised pool.

measures in place including sensitisation and able to limit patronage to the applicable number of patrons as per the Health Orders.

Councillors fought last year to have the health orders adjusted but were nor successful.

Council recognises that the general closure of the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool for another season will not be beneficial to the community and I asked Council to examine options for return to normal services public health orders permitting.

The options included:· - Continue to operate the pool under a remote supervision by signage model.

The pool will be unavailable to the general public under health order restrictions.

Small groups with Covid safety plans will be able to utilise the pool.

- Employ additional staff members to provide services as outlined by the swimming pool covert safety plan.

An additional four staff members will need to be employed at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars over existing budget and staff will not be providing lifeguard duties.

- Engage the YMCA to manage and operate Tea Gardens Swimming Pool as a variation to their existing contractual agreement with Council.

The services provided would be inclusive of full-time lifeguard services and would be compliant with current swimming pool covid safety plan requirements.

The YMCA provides swim pool management and operation services for

MidCoast Council across Taree Forster and Wingham.

The open market has been tested and the services offered by the YMCA offered best value for money.

At this week’s Council meeting I expect Council will approve the appointment of the YMCA to manage the pool.

The outcomes for the residents and visitors of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and surrounding villages will be positive for those who wish to access a supervised public pool.

It is expected that the YMCA should be able to commence operation from Monday 6 December 2021. The YMCA will also be providing additional services.

In the meantime, the pool will be open for groups with Covid plans from the school holidays.

All groups have been advised of the potential arrangements and they are looking forward to the implementation.

Whilst partial opening until December will not please everyone, it has to be the way under the Covid safety requirements.

At least from December onward, we will have continual improved services.

The all-ability access into the complex itself as well as the pool will also be undertaken thanks to a Federal grant announced by Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie.

DEAR News Of The Area, WHILST in the supermarket last week a kindly young lady approached me asking questions about the Milky Way. Her interest impressed me with one so young.

Having met young Chloe, I’m convinced the future of our amazing Universe is in good hands!

I have decided to donate two quality telescopes to the children of our area with a little contest.

One telescope for the 12 to 15 year age group and another for children under 12 years.

Each contestant will submit a short essay on what they enjoy about the night sky.

The 12 to 15 year group are to support their essay with a drawing or a photo.

The under 12 year group should include a drawing of their favourite thing about the night sky.

The winners will receive a one to one night instruction for their new telescopes.

All the contestants will also get a viewing night with a big telescope at our Viney Creek site.

Beachgoers should be aware of the dangers before entering the water on our Myall Coast beaches.

Surf Life Saving NSW tells us that, “Rips are the number one hazard on Australian beaches.

“The best way to avoid a rip is to swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags.”

If you do get caught in a rip there are a few things that you should do.

Firstly, relax and stay calm.

Raise your arm to attract the attention of surf life savers.

You may escape a rip by swimming parallel to the beach, towards breaking waves.

From Hawks Nest to Catherine Hill Bay, surf life saving patrols have kicked off, with almost 6500 volunteer lifesavers enlisted to help protect beachgoers this summer.

Hunter Surf Life Saving, said thanks to the ongoing support from Newcastle Permanent, the team is equipped and ready for the coming summer months.

“Spending time at the beach is a quintessential part of summer in Australia, and after a rough year of lockdowns and restrictions, we know Novocastrians are looking forward to the warmer weather and hitting their local beach.

“We’ve worked hard to ensure the necessary COVID-19 plans are in place, and that our volunteers have the equipment and training they need, for our beaches to stay open and safe this summer.

“In one of our most challenging years, this would not have been possible without the help of our longterm partner, Newcastle Permanent.

“This year, we’re celebrating 40 years of collaboration with Newcastle Permanent, an incredible milestone for two homegrown institutions.

“And we’re delighted this will continue, with Newcastle Permanent committing to continuing their Major Partner support for another three years,” said Ms Scruton.

IT’s official the swimming season is here and the flags are back up for the 2021/2022 season for Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club.

The commitment of volunteers through the NSW Surf Life Saving Clubs is huge – they literally save lives simply by being there.

Every person that makes the decision to swim between the flags is utilising the combined knowledge of

locals that understand the beach conditions.

Your local volunteers know their beach, the rips and can anticipate the conditions as they change with the tide and weather.

The team at Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club have expressed their gratitude for the efforts of their members in the lead up to the season.

Free Bridge Lessons

On 4 October, 2021 commencing at 6pm Shayne will be presenting free bridge lessons at HNBC. As for experience, Shayne’s name has been mentioned in the winning bridge results 19 times since becoming a member of HNBC. Shayne believes that anyone can play bridge and is keen to teach complete beginners.

She will focus on the social aspects, and learning of bridge and encourages you to come and try her lessons.

THE RISE OF SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASES

“Are buyers really purchasing properties sight unseen??”

OH YES! Sight-unseen purchases aren’t uncommon as overseas buyers will often purchase on the strength of a video inspection.

But for on-shore buyers denied access by state border restrictions, or a total lockdown as we’ve just experienced, combined with a shortage of properties, where there’s a will, there’s a way and sight unseen purchases have sky-rocketed. There is however, more than sufficient information for buyers to make informed decisions before purchasing what is probably the most valuable single purchase they will make. Professional photography, virtual tours, detailed floor/siteplans and professionally written property biographies provide a very clear picture of a property, giving the buyer a sense of attachment from the outset. Where on-site inspections are possible, but a remote buyer isn’t able to travel, often they will have a friend, family or colleague in the area they are looking to purchase who will inspect on the their behalf.

Rezoning of land at Pindimar DEAR News Of The Area,

I REFER to the letter we received on in September, 2021, from MidCoast Council regarding a ‘Draft Rural Strategy: Proposed changes for properties at Pindimar’, advising that ‘it addresses paper subdivisions’ and is proposing ‘rezoning’ of non-urban land, advising that ‘paper subdivisions’ will change from ‘rural’ to ‘environmental’.

This letter referred to the website where people could obtain information and ‘have their say’.

It also advises that the Draft Rural Strategy is open for community feedback until Friday 19 November 2021.

We are and have been landholders of a ‘non urban’ block for over 30 years in South Pindimar.

During that time we have followed guidelines and complied to camping regulations and associated structures and members of the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association.

We purchased our land legally, have a title deed, and were unaware that ‘paper subdivisions’ would ever be ‘under threat’.

Many other land holders of ‘non urban’ land would be of the same opinion, understanding that we own ‘non urban’ land.

I have discovered this Draft Rural Strategy commenced in 2019!

During Covid lockdowns over the last 18 months there has been little opportunity

for regular community meetings, people live throughout NSW and need to travel, consult, gain information etc.

The letter advises ‘in some cases, the environmental zone may mean some form of housing would be permitted if lot sizes are large enough’.

There is limited information on the website.

Who pays the legal fees/surveys/ planning costs for ‘larger holdings’ suggested

by Council?

It seems that this Draft Proposal cancels all landowners rights!

My Questions are: 1. Why are we, as land owners, just being advised now?

2. Why are we now only given weeks to comment?

3. How are we supposed to locate and contact current land owners, ‘work together’ as suggested in the letter, and comment within this time frame?

4. Given that MidCoast Council is considering this line of approach, is it going to compensate non urban landholders for ‘resuming’ our land, ‘impacting on our individual situations’.

5. Will Council extend the time frame for consultation and comment until June 2022?

In a time when people’s mental health is severely tested by Covid lockdowns and restrictions, I would hope that MidCoast Council can show some empathy and grant an extended time period for community consultation and comment.

Dear Petra, Isn't it interesting that in a pandemic it is not the politicians or the academics or the fashion designers that we miss. It is the essential workers: psychologists and hairdressers. In fact, for many of us these are one and the same. A hairdresser is not just someone who makes you look better, they make you feel better because they will happily play with your hair while you unload, which is really all most of us want.

Now, in the absence of your hairdresser, may I suggest a home colour kit. If you are going grey, you will need a permanent colour. Now is not the time to do anything fancy such as highlights or balayage. Just try to match the colour on your ends to the colour on the box. This is, of course, impossible when you are shopping using the Click and Collect method, so do your best. You know, as we all do, that you will not look like the woman on the packet. Even the woman on the packet doesn't look like the woman on the packet. You will instead look like someone in lockdown who can't stand their hair and who is sick of wearing a beanie (particularly now the weather is warming up).

There are very clear instructions on home dye packets, and I can guarantee you will probably ignore quite a few of them (the good old patch test for example). But do try to wear the enclosed gloves or you will end up with looking as though you've also done a home-tan job.

The devastating blazes of 2019 and 2020 which swept across Australia are the motive behind this star-studded six-part anthology series. Co-creator/ executive producer Tony Ayres (Glitch) wanted to tell the real stories of the people affected “so that we never forget what they went through and always remember our responsibility for change.” In tonight’s premiere, volunteer firefighters Tash (Eliza Scanlen) and Mott (Hunter Page-Lochard, pictured with Scanlen) nearly lose their lives, but form a bond. Top notch.

Darkly comic and boasting a plethora of deeply dysfunctional relationships, Frayed was a hit when it premiered in 2019. Fans were anxious if the ’80s-set dramedy from Aussie-born, London-living stand-up comedian Sarah Kendall (pictured) would ever return: viewers were left hanging by a thread in the season finale when Sammy Cooper (Kendall) discovered she had been misled out of her dead, cheating husband’s fortune by his smooth-talking lawyer Rufus (Robert Webb). In tonight’s return, Sammy is back in London on mission, but money is still scarce.

Back in Australia, the police are watching the Cooper family over the missing person case.

It’s a quirky, comical treat.

STONEHENGE: THE LOST CIRCLE REVEALED

Professor Alice Roberts (pictured right) does some heavy lifting in this one-off special that promises to “rewrite the history of Stonehenge forever”.

Thankfully, this illuminating documentary lives up to its promise; the palpable enthusiasm from Roberts and archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson is a delight, along with some stunning photography. Roberts follows Pearson’s decade-long effort to reveal a secret of Stonehenge’s bluestones and there are moments where you don’t know which is more gobsmacking: the cutting-edge technology used to unravel the truths, or the secrets that are meticulously uncovered.

Following the release of restrictions on Saturday, 11 September for regional areas, the Croquet Club reopened its courts for a maximum of 20 members.

As the lockdown lifts, life is returning to normal for those living on the Myall Coast.

“Social distancing was easily maintained on the 2000 square metre lawns which had been maintained carefully throughout the lockdown by Colin McArthy.”

While the courts have been reopened for limited capacity, herbicide spraying and fertilising is currently underway.

This will be followed in the next few weeks with the courts being aerated and the lawns top dressed.

Maintenance of the courts may cause closure for a few days but members should reap the rewards of better surfaces in the long run.

“In the meantime, our members are enjoying the lovely spring weather and exercise with the games and an excellent level of play,” Tony said.

All members should be aware of conditions of the courts - if in doubt please email the captain or secretary for an update.
