THE Myall River Action Group have expressed concerns over the rapid closing of the ‘Shortcut’ at the mouth of the Myall River.

“The ‘Shortcut’ is closing rapidly and now (only) usable by recreational craft at half to full tide,” said Gordon Grainger, Myall River Action Group.

“Larger craft such as the ferries are now forced to use the ‘navigational’, man-made channel, which adds 40 minutes to the ferry round trip - time and fuel needlessly wasted.”

Council have budgeted to dredge the outlet on a five-year basis.

The Group argues that the current outlet will not provide a serviceable entrance when the current left-hand turn is employed for the full five-year period.

“It is our contention that the natural entrance known as Myall Point should be pursued,” said Gordon.

“The entrance is the historic outlet, flowing in a South East direction, providing shelter, deep water and a longer period of navigation, particularly if the current navigation channel is allowed to return to its original role as a creek.

“Aerial photos show Mother Nature to be taking that route - we should help!”

Historically, Myall Point provided a deep water, sheltered entrance to the Myall.

It provided a safe entrance to the town of Tea Gardens and was destroyed by a cyclone in 1927, believed to have been caused by mankind's removal of protective trees.

“We would also like to point out that the river suffers from sand migration, causing potential hazards to river traffic.

“In view we are just one of many similar blockages along the NSW coast.

“There is an argument to employ a state-

THE Stroud Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition is on again.

Stroud is a village of just 700 people and the whole town is set to turn out to welcome visitors to this landmark annual event.

While blokes are invited to see how far they can throw a 5 lb brick, ladies are challenged with a rolling pin throwing competition and the kids can get involved by lining up to throw a rubber chook.

Held on 9 July at the Stroud Showground, the event has plenty of family fun.

There will be market stalls, face painting, sand sculpting, a wood chopping event, a Ford car show, food and entertainment.

Hunter Heros will be there for the kids to meet, with characters from Disney and Marvel ready to have

their photos taken with their adoring fans.

The event is part of an international movement held by the townships named Stroud, and has stood the test of time, with the event spanning over 60 years.

In 1960 the brick-making towns of Stroud in the UK and the USA held the first bricking-throwing contest, with Australia and Canada joining the tradition in 1961.

In 1962, Australia suggested including a women’s rolling pin contest.

Recently, the fun-filled addition of children hurling a rubber chook has embodied the event's sense of family spirit and lightheartedness, which keeps attracting participants and spectators year after year.

The event is ticketed and families can attend a whole day of fun for just $25 with adult tickets $10 each and children's tickets just $5.

These are increasingly challenging times for families.

Rising interest rates and inflation, along with wage stagnation and recent property prices, have collectively put greater pressure on parents to help their children purchase a home. This trend is commonly referred to as the “bank of mum and dad”.

But what happens if you have loaned or gifted money to your offspring and their relationship breaks down?

There are some important legal issues to consider when it comes to property disputes.

Ideally, a financial gift should form part of the property pool to be divided between your child and their spouse/partner.

However, there is no guarantee they will receive the full benefit and this can, understandably, greatly upset parents.

When money is loaned to a child it’s expected repayments will be made. Preferably, any money or property loaned should not form part of the assets pool

to be divided between the child and their spouse/partner, with any such debt to be repaid before remaining assets are adjusted between the dividing couple.

Add additional concerns around the future financial welfare of any grandchildren involved and the solution is simple: be prepared by seeking good legal guidance.

Get all paperwork in order before you undertake gifting or loaning money to your children.

Make sure you are sure on your intentions regarding any conditions and keep clear and unambiguous documentation in a safe place.

Years 3 and 4 were guided through a game of ‘Lucky or Smart’, which involved discussion about high school, university, TAFE, aspirations and resilience.

Year 5 thought about what their future life might look like, and how to experience success and happiness.

Their Imagined Futures activity included having a Polaroid photo taken

and made into a fridge magnet to take home to remind themselves of their aspirations, and to constantly work towards them.

Year 6 had a chat about High School to dispel fears and completed a code buster activity.

Years 7 and 8 played a team game which encouraged discussion about future education, training and the huge variety of jobs available.

Years 9 and 10 engaged in a Design Thinking

workshop, involving working in a team, solving a problem and culminating in a short group presentation.

This was an activity reflective of the way some university courses assess their students.

Year 10 also participated in a subject selection presentation.

“Lots of great prizes were given out and follow up activities are planned for later this year and 2023,” said Linda.

Winter Warmer Exhibition opens THE opening night of the Galleries in the Gardens ‘Winter Warmer Exhibition’ was a great success, with a fantastic turnout of art lovers enjoying the selection of local works.

“Sandra Bourke opened the night with a very entertaining and uplifting speech that was well received.

“Sandra is a resident who is passionate about our local community as well as a strong supporter of many community groups,” said Anita Woods, Secretary, Galleries in the Gardens.

Jo Chisholm-Ray was the judge for this year’s Winter Warmer.

Jo has been an arts practitioner for 50 years; a practicing artist, gallerist, and mentor to many artists in our region. “She was delighted to be asked to judge and found it hard to choose the finalists because of the quality of the works exhibited.

“She also mentioned that the gallery is becoming well known in the wider area,” Anita said.

Lee Anderson announced and presented the prizes to the winners and runners up

in each category.

First prize in the 2D category went to Jade Phoenix Isaac (Great Blue Heron in Motion).

First prize in 3D went to Hannah Matilda (Autumn Leaves on Driftwood).

The runners up were, in 2D, Helen Sillar (The Seaweed Series), and in 3D, Jacqui Bright (Windswept).

Australian Army Cadets Program ON Thursday, 9 June, Lieutenant (AAC) Phillip Arthur visited Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) to give a presentation on the Australian Army Cadets (AAC).

Phillip is the current Training Officer at Unit 28ACU of the AAC based in Taree.

“He provided students with information on the activities run by the Army Cadets, such as abseiling, drill

training, survival training and even supervised use of service firearms,” said BCS teacher Casey Connell.

The Manning Valley Unit operates out of the Macquarie Barracks, which is located in Muldoon Street, Taree.

Other AAC units are also located at Adamstown or Rutherford.

For students interested in other areas of the defence force, RAAF and Navy Cadets also operate out of the

Macquarie Barracks, and Williamtown RAAF Base also has a RAAF Cadet program.

There is a nominal cost to attend the Australian Army Cadets of $6 - $8 per week, and students are provided with uniforms after a probationary period of attendance.

$30 million for local disaster risk reduction projects LOCAL and regional organisations across NSW have less than two weeks left to apply for a $30 million funding stream targeting initiatives that reduce future disaster risks.

The Local and Regional Risk Reduction stream, administered by Resilience NSW, is the second stream of the New South Wales Disaster Risk Reduction Fund.

The grant offers between

$50,000 and $1.5 million to eligible organisations and is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

Resilience NSW Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said local and regional organisations play an essential role in understanding a town or region’s built, social, economic and natural environments.

“They know their town and communities best, and through this fund we can empower local knowledge and connections,” Mr Fitzsimmons said.

“This funding stream will help ensure these groups have what they need to develop collaborative initiatives that help reduce the risk and impact of future disasters.

“Recovery from devastating events such as

bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and floods remain our priority.

“However, it has never been more important to look towards how we can help prevent and mitigate the increasing risk of disaster.”

Mr Fitzsimmons said the fund would target locally driven initiatives that help prevent, mitigate, and manage disaster risks.

“We know local organisations play a vital role in preparing their communities for disaster and

reducing place-based risk.”

The stream is designed to support and strongly encourage partnership to maximise the reach and efficacy of strategic, targeted, place-based risk reduction projects.

It targets partnerships with local councils, charitable and not-for profit organisations, including culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) NGOs, Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Joint Organisations of Councils and Regional

citizen scientists to tailor monitoring activities to their chosen site.”

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is seeking citizen scientists who are willing to adopt local sites and commit to regular monitoring and data collection.

By establishing these monitoring sites, citizen scientists, local councils, organisations, businesses and community groups can help with developing the Source Reduction Plans needed to adequately address the growing challenge of marine debris.

Monitoring sites may include inland waterways, estuaries, on-ground areas such as parks, built drainage, coastal shorelines and underwater.

“By contributing this

data on a continuous basis, you will be able to understand at an itemised and quantifiable level the marine debris signature of your area and start impactful conversations with stakeholder groups to develop litter and marine debris reduction strategies,” Tait said.

“The long-term data not only supports the case to set prevention targets, but also to measure success in reaching those targets.”

The Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) was established in 2004 by the not-for-profit Tangaroa Blue Foundation, and brings together a network of communities, schools, industries, government agencies and individuals focused on reducing marine debris washing into our oceans.

A key component of this initiative is the

Australian-first to tackle our marine debris problem IN an Australian-first for citizen scientists, the Australia Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) has released new protocols for monitoring litter and marine debris, offering a standardised, national approach to collecting data on marine debris and plastic pollution.

Developed in collaboration with experts from University of New South Wales, University of Tasmania, Southern Cross University, Macquarie University and the Tangaroa Blue Foundation data team, the robust scientific protocols will enable citizen scientists to collect the vital data needed to inform source reduction plans and prevention strategies.

These prevention plans and

strategies will help address the impact of marine debris, which threatens not only wildlife and maritime activities but our environment, health, culture and economy.

“Monitoring programs have traditionally been government-led and undertaken by research entities, which can be expensive and timeconsuming.

“Because of these limitations, there can be gaps in data,” said Heidi Tait, CEO of Tangaroa Blue Foundation.

The robust monitoring protocols allow citizen scientists to fill these gaps.

The most effective way to reduce marine debris is to stop litter at the source.

The $52 million NSW Disaster Risk Reduction Fund offers three streams of funding designed to reduce the risk of future natural disasters and build resilience across the state.

The first stream, the State Disaster Risk Reduction stream, closed on 21 March 2022.

Applications for the Local and Regional stream remain open until 1 July 2022.

AMDI Database, which enables volunteers and organisations to enter data on their findings with a consistent methodology.

To date, more than 21 million pieces of data have been inputted into the database, creating a comprehensive overview of the quantity and types of marine debris impacting our environment around the country.

The development of these standardised monitoring protocols was a collaborative effort with input from scientists from the University of New South Wales, University of Tasmania, Southern Cross University and Macquarie University.

The project was supported by the Mostyn Family Foundation and the Australian Citizen Science Association.

I then soaked it in a light bleach solution which changed the colour of the entire dress from a deep orange to a sickly mandarin shade.

It was an expensive dress and I have searched for a replacement, but they are no longer in stock. Help!

CONGRATULATIONS to B.Gordon who won the Ladies Medal round on Wednesday 15 June with a round of 77 nett on a countback from B.Newton.

Bernie won the NTP and the Jackpot will be worth winning next week after 4 weeks of no-takers.

Only 14 players played on Saturday 18 June, and the Medley Stableford winner was S.McNaughton (who also won the Jackpot) with 37 pts from M.Styles with 35pts.

NTPs were T.Carroll and S.Moss while the long drivers were J.Small, S.Moss and A.Benson.

The Inaugural Judy Newman Memorial 2 person Ambrose Event was played on Sunday 19 June.

Thanks to Jean Shultz and Brad Newman for sponsoring the day in memory of Judy who was a wonderful golfing champion.

48 keen players contested the trophy, and the winners were Murray Sharp and Paul Cheers with a terrific 62.5 nett. R/Up were Aaron and Matt with 63.25.

Aaron Montha also won the long drive (5th) and the NTP (17th).

Congratulations to everyone who played, cooked, organised and worked to make the day a great success.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club

IT is quite exciting to see many members now returning to the clubhouse to play this great game.

In hindsight our thanks must go to Sally Aldrich and Margaret Rowland who kept the bridge club going during the darkest days of COVID by managing the social distancing with limited numbers permitted to play.

We should also remember Ian Treharne’s contribution to resizing the bridge tables to enable compliance with social distancing.

This ability to keep people using the club has been a key to our ongoing success in managing the COVID years. During those difficult days quite a few members played duplicate bridge on line and many of those players are now back at the bridge club.

Now our club is back to being able to invite visitors to events and lessons with the knowledge that we are a thriving enthusiastic club where membership is most sought after.

TUESDAY 14 June: The Semi Final of the Minor Singles Competition and Social bowls were played.

Both Minor Singles games developed into hard fought games.

Judy McGavock and Ingrid Luck did battle for 28 ends the score going into what eventuated to be the final end was Judy 24 and Ingrid 23, Judy scored 1 reached the goal of 25 and claimed her spot in the final.

Sheril Johnson and Lynda Richards played 27 ends Lynda started strongly but Sheril was unrelenting with her great draw bowling winning 25 v 20.

Should be an interesting final, Judy v Sheril.

Social bowls played 2 games of pairs and a game of Triples Liv Everingham (swinger lead), Dot Dallas and Lorraine Murphy defeated Liv, Dale Cameron and Sandra Leisemann 18 v 17.

Judy didn’t add to her tally for the next 6 ends, Sheril was in front by 5 shots 20 v 15, 24 ends bowled.

Sheril now just needed 5 points to claim victory but it took another 8 ends before this final finished, Judy wasn’t giving up, by the 31st end Sheril was in front by 1 shot 23 v 22.

THE Secondary Zone Athletics Carnival was recently held at Tuncurry.

Although the Bulahdelah Central School carnival was cancelled due to persistent wet conditions, students were able to nominate themselves to represent BCS in the Zone track and field events.

There were some great results from the BCS competitors, with several students qualifying for the Regional Carnival.
