The campaign aims to reduce child pedestrian injuries and fatalities across the region, with road trauma still being the most common cause of death for Australian children according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The Myall Coast and other regional holiday destinations are expecting a surge in numbers due to the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions, resulting in greater child pedestrian activity in our area.

For visiting families and children, an unfamiliar environment and key visual roadway differences pose an increased risk. It’s important for all motorists to stay vigilant on the road as children can react impulsively and are still learning to identify safe crossings and anticipate driver behaviour.

They now focus their energy on making school holidays safer for children.

“That is why the Holiday Time campaign is so important.

“It puts the onus on drivers, parents and carers to recognise the potential danger in busy holiday spots and take extra precautions to ensure our kids are kept safe.

“Always talk to your children about road safety, hold their hands until they are 10, and be particularly vigilant when you are on holiday or in new environments,” said Michelle.

Emeritus Professor Ann Williamson, of the UNSW Sydney’s Transport and Road Safety Research Group, is in agreement.

“Both drivers and local councils need to be on high alert for the safety of young pedestrians.

“We are coming up to a busy time of year, and an awareness campaign like that of Little Blue Dinosaur is so important.

“We know from our research that child pedestrians can move

unpredictably and their smaller size makes them harder for drivers to see.

“We can do more to ensure that we keep child pedestrians safe,” Ann Williamson said.

Wanting to provide greater support to families in their early days of grief, Michelle is also establishing

special Road Trauma Grief Support Packages for families who suffer the unimaginable tragedy of losing a child to road trauma.

She is calling on corporate sponsors and philanthropists to help Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation raise $150,000 to fund

the 12-month long care packages, each containing vouchers for child care, cleaning, domestic, and cooking services, filling a gap felt firsthand by Michelle after Tom’s passing.

Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation’s child pedestrian safety campaigns are now supported by 63

Ms Swanson is also calling for a reduction in wait time for boosters from five months to three months in the region to ensure protection.

“The wait time has been reduced in the UK, and I think that it is needed for a holiday destination such as Nelson Bay which has an older

population.

“It is now clear that even with two vaccines people are not fully protected and our health services could be overwhelmed,” she said.

Although many Port Stephens locals are eligible for the booster, Ms Swanson says that wait times and overload of health services has meant that many are left without access to the booster.

“This week I’ve had people tell me yesterday that not one medical surgery or pharmacy in the Tomaree Peninsula had any vaccines, and the earliest date they can offer for boosters is January.

“A practice manager told me that last month they

were throwing away vaccines because people were not coming forward to get boosters – there was no sense of urgency,” Ms Swanson said.

The NSW Government has now reduced the wait for boosters from six months to five months.

“We have this new

outbreak, and now there is a sense of urgency; people are worried and want boosters, but the clinics don’t have the vaccines to give them,” Ms Swanson said.

Where this is the first Christmas since separation this can be particularly hard as the thought of Christmas without your children can be foreign and miserable.

If you have children, grandchildren or extended family who may find themselves in this situation consider the following to help them through the day: ● Plan alternate activities – time spent alone will allow the parent more opportunity to dwell on what they are missing. Involve the parent in your celebrations, and give them a job to do. ● Christmas is not just one day, celebrate on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day – for many, Christmas is about being with family and friends. Be open to holding family celebrations

on other days when the parent is spending time with the children and emphasise the benefits to the children of having two Christmases. ● Avoid conflict – above all support the parent to avoid conflict with the other parent over the Christmas period. Avail yourself to assist with the collection or drop off of children from one parent to the other, and remind the parent of the importance of protecting their children from parental conflict. ● Be aware of the risks – during Christmas celebrations, increased alcohol consumption can exacerbate already strained relationships and tense situations. Watch out for the parent and help them avoid doing, sending, posting or saying something they will later regret.

IT’S time for your weekly emergency update for Myall Coast.

Pole Collision in Tea Gardens At approximately 8:20 PM on Monday 13 December, Police from the Port StephensHunter Police District were called to a single vehicle collision on Myall Road in Tea Gardens.

A car had been driven into a light pole which had snapped the pole at its base.

Upon arrival, police found two young children in that vehicle.

Thankfully, no occupants of the vehicle were injured.

The driver of the vehicle, police will allege, declined a roadside breath test, and was subsequently arrested and taken back to the station in which he once again refused a breath analysis.

The man has been charged in relation to the offence and has had his licence suspended.

He will now face Raymond Terrace Local Court.

Stephens-Hunter PD, assisted by Traffic & Highway Patrol Command conducted ‘Operation Rural Roads,’ in the suburbs of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Mungo Brush.

During the Operation, over 700 random breath tests and eight random drug tests were conducted.

Seven drivers were issued Traffic Infringement Notices for offences including speeding, using a mobile phone when driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

A twenty year old male was issued a Court Attendance Notice for driving with a cancelled licence. Port Stephens-Hunter PD will continue to run similar operations over the school holidays.

Acting Commander Over the next few weeks, Acting Superintendent Luke Rankin will be taking over the role of Commander in the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District whilst Commander Chad Gillies is on annual leave.

Bulahdelah Man Hit On 13 December, Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by Ambulance New South Wales to Bulahdelah to reports of a 49-year-old male pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

Local Ambulance Paramedics and Emergency Services attended the scene and commenced treatment of the male prior to the arrival of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Critical Care Medical Team.

The male was treated and stabilised by the Critical Care Medical Team before being flown directly to the John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle in a serious but stable condition suffering from spinal injuries.

There is more than the cost of food and toys, there are vet bills to consider over the life of a pet as well.

If you are considering gifting a pet, we are always being urged to consider a rescue.

Rescuing a pet means that you are not only taking a pet into your home but you are saving its life.

That’s why MidCoast Council is reminding all pet owners to make sure their cats and dogs are registered and microchipped with upto-date address details this festive season.

“The Christmas and end-of-year period is a very busy time and that means it’s more likely that your pet may get lost,” said Council’s Manager Major Assessment and Regulatory Services, Adam Matlawski.

“By being a responsible pet owner and registering and microchipping your cat or dog, you are ensuring that, if found, they can be returned to you as quickly as possible.

Every year Arts Mid North Coast gathers together the best summertime creative activities and events for kids happening right across the Mid North Coast.

While getting stuck behind a slow-moving header or tractor can be frustrating, Mr Everitt said, showing patience and keeping a safe distance was important for everyone’s safety.

“Remember if the driver can't see you then they don’t know you’re there – so stay back at a safe distance and don’t be impatient,” Mr Everitt said.

“It’s better to be a little late than not to arrive at all.

“We’ve just about made it through a pretty rough year, let’s all work together to get to the finish line safely.”

Christmas Lights Spectacular THIS is the fourth year of a beautiful Christmas lights display at Palm Lake Resort (PLR).

It started with some residents putting up a few Christmas lights, but year by year as the village grew and with the influx of new residents, the number of participants grew and is now a full-blown competition.

The Social Committee started with just a small perpetual trophy for the best house, a lovely little leadlight house that lights up that was built by a resident in the workshop.

The next year it was not just the best house awarded a prize but also the best grove.

The next year a perpetual trophy was made for this

category, a solar lamppost with plaque reminiscent of the old gas lamps of yesteryear that is displayed at the entry to the winning grove.

Every year many residents and their friends and families take a walk around the village, and these numbers grow every year, to take in the spectacular, an absolute joy to many grandchildren and the young at heart of the resort.

The judge each year is the resort manager and it’s said she is open to bribery.

The winners are announced just before Christmas each year.

Each year there has been great comradery amongst the residents of groves planning

and setting up the displays, always trying to outdo other groves, just short of ‘sledging’ at times.

Some residents, who can no longer climb ladders, still join in the spirit and put lights in their gardens; all adding to the joy for others.

This year, a new category

has been introduced, the People’s Choice Award.

Each residence gets to vote on who they think has the best display, and by the number voting it seems to be very popular.

The winners of Best House and the People’s Choice award were Barry and

Christine Johnson, house 162 in Myrtle Grove.

The winning grove was Daffodil Grove.

The homes around PLR in Spinifex Avenue also get involved in the Christmas spirit and some beautiful decorations were again on display this year.

CHRISTMAS can be an incredibly difficult time for some people.

While it feels like the whole world is celebrating, this time of year can also trigger feelings of isolation,

sadness and anxiety.

These feelings can come about from family estrangement, death of a loved one and existing mental health issues.

On Christmas Day, an

average of 20 people will attempt to take their own lives.

Two of those people’s attempts will be fatal.

THE Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce has decided that post Covid, local businesses need our support.

“We are ending the year with a bang,” said a Chamber spokesperson.

“To begin, the Christmas Twilight Market held at the Big 4 Holiday Park last week was a great success and we are following up

with a social media blitz that aims to get locals and visitors alike shopping local and visiting our clubs and attractions.

“Every dollar we spend in the district stays in the district so let's get business moving.

“Get out your golf clubs, polish up your bowling clobber and splash out with

those dine and discover vouchers but, most of all, tune in on your favourite socials for Christmas promotions, specials and great deals from local businesses.”

OFF GRID: THE WAY TO GO?

“Is it a risky move to buy a property that’s totally off grid?”

OFF-GRID is an example of shifting priorities. Previously it conjured up images of a rustic – or rusty – cabin in some remote backwater, lit by candles or kerosene lamps, cooking on a wood stove or open fire. But no more. Thanks to technological advances, off-grid today is far more sophisticated with solar panels and backup batteries providing sufficient and affordable energy to run a full home, day and night, year-round. And off-grid is not the sole domain of remote rural properties. Many residential homes are disconnecting from the grid, not simply to curb sky-rocketing energy prices, or leave a lighter footprint, but, in the face of grid overload during our increasingly hot summers, to take control over their energy supply. I know several residential properties that run totally off-grid without issue. As long as the property has the appropriate quality/ quantity infrastructure and you’re comfortable with the concept, I wouldn’t be dissuaded from purchasing an off-grid property. Today’s off-grid lifestyle is definitely less Beverly Hillbillies and more Good Life (for those of us who can remember the visionary series).

THE first problem we have here, apart from the multiple word plays I could riff off using your name and your conundrum, is that your husband bought you jeggings as a birthday gift.

The number of things that could go wrong with this ill-conceived purchase are as immeasurable as the ways jeggings are appropriated for real pieces of clothing.

Do you ever sit at home, or on the bus, and wonder about how something was invented?

I mean, imagine the day someone glanced down from the fetlock of his horse, to its hoof and thought, 'I don't know what I can use to stick these two sheets of paper together, but I reckon the answer will be found by grinding down bits of this fine animal.'

Jeggings, for those who don't know, are basically tights printed to look like jeans, but don't be fooled.

They are not jeans.

They don't have zips.

They don't have any support.

You can't tuck a shirt into them.

Jeggings are an optical illusion that leave about as much to the imagination as body paint.

And, as you've found, Fanny J, they don't hold in your stomach and thighs, they accentuate them.

They are about as adorable as the idea of grown-ups wandering around in Wondersuits (an outfit that looks appropriate on babies, but positively creepy on anyone who has gone beyond their first birthday).

I wouldn't be too worried about hurting your husband's feelings.

He doesn't seem to have much regard for yours if he's going to allow you to saunter around town leaving nothing to the imagination, and, after a few washes when the elastic gives way, trotting along like a denim-sprayed Shar Pei. Many hybrids don't work for good reason.

Keep your jeans as jeans, your leggings for exercise, and shun the cruel and twisted fashionista who thought mixing the two was a good idea.

American police procedurals are reliably slick affairs, and there’s arguably no one better to create one than Dick Wolf, the veteran producer of the Law & Order franchise, as well as this engaging series. While viewers can expect a crime to be committed and then enthrallingly solved by a bunch of worldweary police investigators, this series stands out from the pack in Australia because of its stars. Boasting American heartthrob Kellan Lutz (Twilight), it also features Aussie Julian McMahon (Nip/ Tuck), right) and Kiwi-Aussie Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider). In “Unhinged”, Hana (Castle-Hughes) rejoins the team.

As this smart Michigan-set mystery unfurls, you could be reconsidering ever setting foot on a train again. Magic pudding and honouring memories

LOVE it or hate it, the classic Christmas pudding is an iconic part of the festive season.

Fruit, nuts, brandy, flour, butter, spices and sugar come together to make a hulking monolith which dominates the Christmas dessert table.

My Nan would make a Christmas pudding every year and it was served on Christmas Eve after our customary walk to look at the local Christmas lights.

The process would start a good month or so ahead, with the fruit being soaked in a liberal helping of brandy.

When mixing the ingredients together, Nan would invite us to make a wish.

As we got older, we would give the pudding a stir and think of every person who was no longer with us.

Once the ingredients were mixed together, the mixture would be poured into a square of calico cloth and boiled in an old aluminium pot for six hours.

The cooked pudding was then hung from a cupboard

door knob in the corner of the kitchen for several weeks before Christmas.

Come Christmas Eve, the pudding was boiled again for an hour, then Nan would perform the impressive feat of pouring burning brandy over the pudding.

The flames would burn blue due to the ethanol in the brandy, and Mum always worried that the house would catch fire.

Us kids were always mesmerised by the blue flames, which flared up over the pudding and only lasted for a few seconds.

Unfortunately, my Nan died in October 2020 and Christmas has not been quite the same without her.

I wanted to try to recapture some of the magic we experienced as kids when we spent Christmas with her and my Grandad at their home in Wollongong.

So, I set about making Nan’s famous pudding.

I ended up making two smaller puddings so that I only had to boil them for three hours.

My sister, who doesn’t

drink alcohol, gave me a spare bottle of Black Bottle brandy that belonged to my Grandad.

He would drink anything, but particularly loved brandy and dry ginger ale.

As I put the puddings into the boiler, I realised I’d forgotten to add the almonds!

Oh well, they can go into the brandy butter.

Nan’s Christmas recipe comes from the Commonsense Cookery Book.

She would add 10-12 eggs, but I found this can make the pudding quite stodgy, which is not ideal after a big heavy meal in an Australian summer, so I stuck to eight.

For those who don’t like brandy, rum or fruit juice can be used instead.

Other dried fruits can be added to the mix, such as chopped dates or glace ginger.

Christmas Pudding Ingredients 1kg mixed fruit 125g blanched almonds 500g butter 500g brown sugar 8 eggs ⅔ cup brandy 250g soft fresh breadcrumbs (you can grate a few

Method Fill up a large pot with water and put it on the stove to boil.

Cream the butter and sugar together, then add well beaten eggs and brandy.

Stir in all the fruit.

Add the breadcrumbs, sifted flour, salt, bicarb, nutmeg and mixed spice, and

mix it thoroughly.

Tie up in a square of unbleached calico cloth, placing the tie about 10cm or so away from the pudding so that it can swell up.

The mixture can also be placed into a two litre pudding basin, allowing space for the pudding to swell.

Boil for six hours.

On the day of eating, boil for 3 hours (you can do this first thing in the morning Christmas day or after lunch Christmas Eve) Two smaller puddings can be boiled for three hours

on the first cook, then 90 minutes on the day of eating.

The secret to a successful pudding flame is to warm the brandy gently on the stove before using a kitchen lighter or long matches to light the vapour.

Have your phone ready for a video, as this spectacular effect only lasts a couple of seconds!

Hopefully I made Nan proud, and by sharing this recipe with you all, it has evoked my own memories of the fun family Christmases I had with my grandparents.

All safety and equipment audits on the yacht have already been completed.

“From 20 December onwards, our main focus will be on upcoming weather forecasts for the race.

“As Navigator on the yacht, it’s essential to study the weather forecasts intently,” Steve said.

Using cutting-edge navigation software, Steve will develop several hundred optimal sailing routes for the race that can be implemented on race day using meteorological and sea surface temperature data sourced whilst racing from both regular and satellite.

This year, COVID safety procedures entail all yacht crew members to return a negative COVID-19 rest before embarking.

Smuggler’s unique crew features a range of sailors, including both professionals and amateurs.

Owner and Skipper Sebastian Bohm operates ‘Bohm Presents’, one of

Australia and New Zealand’s most successful promoting companies, bringing some of the world’s most wellknown musicians, singers, stage and screen actors and stand-up comedians to the Southern Hemisphere.

“His company has presented a great variety of artists ranging from theatre performances, stand-up comedians and classical musicians to heavy metal bands, dance and folk music around Australia and New Zealand for more than twenty-five years,” Steve said.

Steve McConaghy is a master of sailing; an ex-Olympic sailor and a member of the sport’s famous McConaghy family.

Boat Captain Sam Price is a professional Yacht Rigger whilst Navigator Steve Taylor is part of the Project Management team at Kinn Construction, a Sydney luxury home building company.

WHAT a great week of golf to finish a fantastic year at Bulahdelah Golf Club.

Thirty vets enjoyed

their last game for 2021 on Thursday with a three club and putter Stableford event.

Just twelve holes, followed by a delicious BBQ – for some players, the best

part of the day.

D.Schoonhoven won the day with 30 points, followed

Doug will be officially in the position following the January committee meeting.

15 DECEMBER Today was the last day of organised bowls for 2021 and a great turnout of 57 bowlers took to the greens.

Fifty-seven players were the most seen all year and hopefully without COVID restrictions we can maintain and increase that number in 2022.

Today’s game was turn around triples over 12 ends with our Christmas lunch following play.

For lunch, bowlers enjoyed a wonderful beef burger courtesy of the Club President, Noel Jackson and then a plentiful supply of succulent prawns.

The winners on the grass were Keith Smith, Bryan McPhie and Geoff Page with a score of 10.

The winners on the synthetic with a score of 9 were Bob Peady, John Yabsley and Doug Andrews.

The results today were decided by the ‘lowest winning score’.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Steve Marsh.
