By Doug CONNOR BATTLING with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after 10 years of military service and the loss of his 15 year old son through suicide, Shane Griffis turned to his dogs for support.

Realising the benefits of interaction with dogs on his mood, Shane began training one of his four Border Collies, Pepper, as his personal Assistance Dog. “I suffer with PTSD fairly badly and I lost a son to suicide at 15, and the dogs are just there for me,” he said.

“If you wake up in a bad mood, the dogs will jump on you and lick you and make you laugh.

“They put you in a good mindset.

“They walk with you, they are there for you,” Shane said.

After seeing the benefits firsthand, Shane is now putting all four Collies through training to become certified Assistance Dogs.

“We have to put them through a training course.

“I have a lady who trains me to train the dogs.

“Once she feels they are ready, a trainer comes in to put the dogs through their paces.

“They have to achieve the requirements, and then can become fully fledged assistance dogs.”

Shane says the benefits are endless.

“They are incredible, especially for those suffering from PTSD. “If I was to have a fall or a heart attack, they would know to go and alert somebody.

“But mostly it is about companionship, it is truly amazing for mental health.”

Now, with four of the cutest dogs on the Myall Coast in tow, Shane is bringing joy to local veterans and the aged-care community.

Shane’s pack of Border Collies - Pepper, Salt, Bill and Brooke - have been delighting seniors in recent weeks, with their visits to retirement communities.

“I take the dogs down to see the older veterans and others at Peter Sinclair Gardens.

“I am going through the process of doing it at Estia health as well.

“It is very well received,” he said.

“Taking the dogs to see the oldies, and seeing the joy on everyone's faces when they see the dogs is worth a million dollars.”

This year in the Myall Coast we will be seeing a range of ANZAC Day activities for veterans and the community to participate in.

In Tea Gardens there will be a Dawn Service held

at 6.00am in Anzac Park, followed by a 10am March and an 11am Service in Anzac Park.

In Bulahdelah a Dawn Service will be held at 6.00am at the Cenotaph, on Mead Street.

This will be followed by a March at 10.30am on Crawford Street and an 11am Service at the Cenotaph, on Mead Street.

In Gloucester a Dawn Service will commence at 5.30am at the Memorial

Karuah RSL will commemorate the day with a 5:45am march, followed by a 6am service at Cenotaph Park.

There will be traditional games of Two-Up at Bulahdelah Bowling Club

Support for young veterans

By Doug CONNOR PINDIMAR South local and ex-Australian Army veteran Shane Griffis has launched a support group to help younger veterans on the Myall Coast with their transition back to civilian life.

Mr Griffis cites a lack of support for younger veterans from traditional ex-service organisations as a key reason for taking on his new venture.

“I just decided that I wanted to do something for the younger vets around the area, being a younger vet myself.

“There’s more younger veterans in the area than people are aware of.

“That’s mainly due to the younger veterans not feeling a part of the RSL network and feeling that the RSL isn’t supporting them,” he said.

The support group is called A 10 Shun, and takes inspiration from the famous military command, ‘Attention’.

“Attention is basically the most used command in the armed forces,” Mr Griffis said.

“It will be a veterans support group where we can meet up and have coffee, or interact with assistance and companion dogs.”

In particular, Mr Griffis believes the group setting, which will involve interactions with assistance and companion dogs, can have a positive impact on veterans struggling with mental health issues.

“If people are down, or struggling with PTSD or something like that, we can take the dogs around and cheer them up.

“It will give them someone else to talk to,” he said.

Mr Griffis served with the 1st Armoured Regiment, based at Puckapunyal in Victoria, the1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in

Darwin and the1st Combat Engineer Regiment in Norforce and Darwin.

After more than 10 years of military service, he said the transition back to civilian life was a difficult one.

“The biggest problem with younger vets today, is they get very little help in transitioning back from military to civilian life.

“When I joined, it was approximately $1million to train a soldier, to take them from being joe-average of the street and turning them into a fully-fledged fighting soldier.

“When you transition back, it is basically a golden handshake, see you later and nothing after,” he said.

While Mr Griffis agrees that support for veterans has improved in recent years, he says there is still a long way to go.

“There is so much more they could be doing better,” he said.

“It is getting better slowly but not fast enough, and rates of veteran suicide is showing that.” q Shane Griffis believes there is a lack of support for young veterans.

With work in progress and the support group in its infancy, Mr Griffis has big plans.

“In the long run, I would like to see it grow to where we can get some sponsorships or grants from the government, so we could potentially have a building where people can go and catch up and talk to their mates.

“That’s what I want to do, to coax these other younger veterans out to come and talk to other veterans and other people, and let them know there is someone there to support them.”

With ANZAC Day quickly approaching, Mr Griffis has arranged a Dawn Service at his home at 34 Cunningham St, Pindimar South.

All are welcome, guests should arrive at 5:45am for a 6am start.

The service will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast.

Duke Of Edinburgh’s Myall Connection

IT may be a little-known fact these days but Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest have a right royal connection with none other than The Duke Of Edinburgh.

Sadly the Duke passed away on 9 April 2021. .

The Duke Of Edinburgh visited Australia more than 20 times during his 72 years of service to the Commonwealth.

The Queen and the Duke Of Edinburgh visited Australia in 1973 to open the Sydney Opera House.

It was during this tour that His Royal Highness the Duke Of Edinburgh visited Tea Gardens in March of 1973.

The Duke visited the area without the Queen who

had returned to the United Kingdom to fulfill other Royal Duties in regard to a general election in Britain.

The Duke arrived in Tea Gardens after crossing the channel on the punt where the Singing Bridge now sits.

Tea Gardens local Anne Johnson recalled, “The Duke was in the region to see the National Park and he had lunch at the Tea Gardens Hotel Motel.

“My mother Doris Ringland took the photos.”

Anne’s mother found the visit very interesting and shared the images with the NOTA back in March of 1973.

“It is reported that the Duke was overheard saying that the seafood that was served and caught locally was the best he had ever tasted,” she said.

While the Duke was often the subject of controversy we can all agree that he spent a life in service to his wife, the Queen and the Monarchy.

Perhaps his greatest legacy is the Duke Of Edinburgh Award which young people can participate in.

The Duke Of Edinburgh Award is a non structured youth development program, designed to empower all young Australians aged 14-24 allowing them to explore their full potential while finding their purpose, passion and place in the world.

New Alliance to make the Hunter an Age Friendly Community A GROUP of citizens has formed a new alliance to get all levels of government, business, NGOs and citizens to focus more on older people and work together to make the Hunter region an age friendly community.

Hunter Ageing Alliance spokesperson, and geriatrician, Dr John Ward, said there is not enough attention on meeting the needs of the growing number of local older people.

The Alliance has been meeting with key groups, including through a forum of 50 local political, business, and community leaders held last month, to gain agreement on the problems, priorities, and way forward.

People over 65 will soon make up a quarter of the region’s population and the number of people over 85 will double in the next 20 years.

Dr Ward said the Royal

Commission on Quality and Safety in Aged Care has shone a spotlight on the crisis in residential aged care as well as home and community care.

The number of older homeowners is declining and the number of older women becoming homeless is growing. Social housing stock is declining and waiting lists can be more than ten years.

He said ageing issues were far greater than aged care and accommodation.

“Ageism and the organisation of communities is denying older people of their right to be physically, intellectually, socially and sexually active,” Dr Ward said.

“Some people living alone are lonely for substantial parts of the week and depression is common,” he said.

“Facilities, events and

infrastructure are often not designed with the needs of older people in mind.”

One of the Alliance’s solutions is for the region to become a World Health Organisation (WHO) Age Friendly Community.

The WHO has produced a guide, and established a global support network, around eight areas that cities and communities can address to better adapt their structures and services to the needs of older people: the built environment, transport, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication, and community support and health services.

“We can use this proven framework to rise above the blame game and tokenism and take action to promote healthy and active ageing and a good quality of life for

older people.”

“We need new types of low-cost, supportive, housing and aged care, particularly to accommodate those with a disability or dementia.

“There are programs that

can reduce social isolation and loneliness and build resilience.”

“Older people make an important contribution to our community. They deserve better and with proper focus and will, we can better support them to be healthy, independent and autonomous long into their old age.”

“We all need to commit to playing our part and we can show other communities how to age well.”

Using the WHO Guide, the Alliance will hold stakeholder workshops and a public meeting in the coming months to help the region obtain Aged Friendly Community status.

Festival Of Place a great success

THE Festival Of Place is an inaugural celebration of public spaces across New South Wales.

As part of the event, musicians were brought into the Myall Coast to perform in many unconventional places.

On Wednesday 14 April, Hawks Nest locals and tourists were treated to singer/ songwriters Chelsea Berman and Harrison Hoven at the Hawks Nest Bakehouse.

Performing three sets just outside the window, the two performers created an excellent vibe for anyone passing by.

Chelsea Berman has been performing since she was eight years old, with credits supporting Travis Collins, Kirsty Lee Akers and The Viper Creek Band.

As well as this, Chelsea

has recently earned excellent success for her latest EP ‘Can You Just Not’, which rose to the number one spot on the Itunes Country Chart.

From covers including Landslide (Fleetwood Mac), Horses (Daryl Braithwaite) and Scar (Missy Higgins), to beautiful original songs, Chelsea took the streets of Hawks Nest by surprise.

Harrison Hoven delightfully performed two excellent sets of enjoyable music, showcasing his skills as both a vocalist and a guitarist.

Locals and tourists stopped to listen to both acts, commenting on how pleasant the music was.

Across three hours both acts gained fans and even had their sets stopped multiple times to receive praise from people walking by.

Both acts were perfect additions to the Festival Of Place, creating the perfect atmosphere for grabbing a coffee in the sunshine and listening to some great music.

Both Chelsea and Harrison have played many gigs across Newcastle, Central Coast and Sydney but the Festival Of Place performance was their first time in the Mid Coast Region.

APART from joining the Royal Australian Navy, Bulahdelah local Leading Seaman Dion Cray is sharing another milestone with his great-grandfather.

“My great-grandfather, Chief Engineering Mechanic John Kenneth Silver served in replenishment ships HMAS Supply (I) and HMAS Stalwart (II),” Leading Seaman Cray said.

“I am following that legacy now as part of the commissioning crew for auxiliary oiler replenishment ship HMAS Supply (II) which was welcomed into service on April 10.”

Meaning those ships can travel further, for longer.

Leading Seaman Cray said serving on a replenishment ship like his greatgrandfather was a surreal experience and one he would cherish.

“I am the first person in my family to follow into Navy service and now being posted to the second HMAS Supply is a real honour for that family legacy,” he said.

Leading Seaman Cray said he was excited about working on a replenishment ship as it differed to his previous postings on board Anzac-class warships.

“I enjoy how Supply isn’t just a replenishment ship as it still can perform some warfare-like capabilities, but at the same time has the lifestyle of a logistics ship,” Leading Seaman Cray said.

“It is basically a completely new experience for myself which I am looking forward to.”

“What’s great about Supply is it has been upgraded from our previous replenishment ships to include a combat management system,” Leading Seaman Cray said.

“So as the only aircraft controller on board, when we have the MH60R embarked it is a similar environment and tempo to what I am used to on the warships.”

Now that Supply is commissioned, the ship and Leading Seaman Cray will begin their first-of-class trials and look to integrating fully with the fleet.

“Being first-of-class has been a big learning curve as I have never commissioned a ship before and am a newly promoted Leading Seaman,” Leading Seaman Cray said.

“However, I am looking forward to getting through the trials and being able to go on deployments and show other countries the capabilities of the Navy’s newest platform.”

100 Years Of Country Shows at Stroud

FOR 100 Years the Stroud Show has been showcasing the best the region has to offer.

That means stock, vegetables, show jumping and even a demolition derby.

After bitter disappointment seeing the 2020 show cancelled the 2021 100th Stroud Show was held over 9-10 April.

Stroud Show President James Harris told News Of The Area, “The Stroud Show Committee is incredibly happy to report massive numbers through the gates for the centenary event, with approximately 6,000 adults across the two days.

“We pride ourselves on being a family friend Show, and 2021 was no different

with kids having a blast at the magic and reptile shows as well as dancing to Catherine and Viper Creek until 8.30pm on the last night.”

experienced a ferris wheel for the first time and we auctioned the top three seats to watch the evening fireworks resulting in $500 which was donated to the Hunter Brumby Association and RDA,” explained Mr Harris.

Stroud Show will be back again in 2022 and is looking forward to welcoming everyone back for another great country show.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News

14 APRIL It is with great sadness that the Bowling Club has received the news of the passing of a much-loved former member of our Club, Peter Jones.

We will remember Peter’s happy disposition and his comradeship whilst at our Club.

Our condolences to Elke and the family.

The usual Wednesday nominated triples game was changed today at the request of the Pennant selectors.

Three bowls gave way to two-bowl triples to provide additional practice to the Pennant sides.

Fifty players took part with 18 ends played for each game.

Proving that two-bowl triples were a piece of cake, the winners were Gary Wynne, John Moore and Greg Smith with 26 points on a 3-end countback.

The lucky losers were Lon

Richards, Ron Rowe and Ron Green on 22 points.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Bill Whalan.

Our thanks to the Garden eatery for their support.

One game of the Major Pairs was played today with Scott Fitzalan and Chris Ross defeating Peter Gurney and Leigh Hunt 27 – 7.

17 April Rain intervened in the sixth round of our Pennant games today with all recording washouts.

Contrary to what I published last week, the Dolphins Grade 4 side won against Beresfield and have continued their winning way remaining undefeated after 5 rounds.

They are currently top of

the table.

Grade 5 have yet to record a win; however, they have had a few close games and I’m sure they will turn things around on the homeward run.

Grade 6 are well placed running third but will need to win some tough games in the second half of the draw.

The mighty Sevens, Grade 7, are currently running fourth and will improve.

Next week Grade 4 are at home against East Maitland, Grade 5 have a bye, Grade 6 are away at Soldiers Point and Grade 7 play Stockton at home.

18 April The Sunday bowlers welcomed the Duke of Wellington Hotel Social Bowlers Club today for a game of friendly bowls.

There was some close competition with five rinks recorded margins under 4.

The winners for the day were Karen McPhie, Lynda Richards and Wilma Drake.

The “Dukes” have a long association with Tea Gardens which was only interrupted last year by the dreaded Covid.

Two games of the Club Championship Major Pairs were played today with the following results.

Neil Kibble and Ron Webster defeated Col Amos and Mark Hair 29-17 in a tough game.

The scores are no indication of the play and in fact, for most of the game it was “nip and tuck”.

In the remaining game evergreen Vic Garlick partnered with Doug Andrews to record a convincing win, 21-11, over Rob Young and Dave Garcia.

There will be some very interesting games next Sunday as this competition progresses.

WELCOME to our glorious region!! You’ll love our weather, big skies, beaches and that wonderful feeling of space and freedom that comes with our coveted, relaxed lifestyle. If I’ve read your query correctly, you think you need to choose between fruit and ornamentals. It doesn’t have to be that way. Also, free yourself from the idea that you need a specific ‘orchard’. Mix fruit trees with ornamentals and you’ll have a wonderful range of practical and decorative trees. Plus, many fruit trees do brilliantly in pots: lemon, lime, orange spring to mind, and of course their vibrant colour is delightful. You could also mix fruiting pear trees with the beautiful and stately Manchurian or Capital Ornamental Pears. Their Autumn colours are simply breathtaking. You can espalier fruit trees as well, so you’ll have the practical fruit element with a stunning ornamental aspect.

One thing you should be careful of though is fruit fly. Ensure you select fruits not prone to attack, keep your trees small and cover them with bird-safe netting to avoid ruining fruit and fruit-fly accessibility. Have fun…. and enjoy the fruits of your labour!

THE stages of washing are never-ending, so to have to wait for five hours before you can even start the process seems absolutely ridiculous.

Laundromats or sharedaccommodation laundries are cool places when depicted in movies.

There's always an edgy looking girl (who can't afford a washing machine but can afford killer Mary-Jane shoes, a leather jacket and an ironic beanie) perched on a seat, her legs crossed in a provocative manner, flicking through a magazine, and a hapless dude who accidentally goes to the wrong machine and takes out her lacy underwear.

Then she giggles instead of slapping him across the face and they leave their washing to hail a cab (this is an American movie) before starting a Woody Allentype romance (the sort he depicts in his movies, not his real-life romance that involves his adopted child - that would be a turn off for viewers).

The reality is quite different.

The first shared laundromat I experienced was when I moved out of home and lived in an apartment complex.

At the time I was a frazzled firsttime mum washing baby clothes, so to be confronted with a 'cold water only' machine that invariably had smelly tradie clothes in it was a crass and unhappy introduction to adulthood.

Personally, I would say ten minutes is an acceptable time to leave clothes that have finished their cycle in the washing machine.

You would actually be doing the person a favour by putting them in an open space to air.

You could leave a little note saying 'dear owner of boxer shorts with a tacky fish print and the Rolling Stones shirt that has not aged as well as Mick Jagger, I have removed your items so I can do my own washing and left them to air in the communal basket someone thoughtfully left behind.

The load setting you chose goes for 59 minutes, so in future please set an alarm to prevent this awkward event happening again.

Fortunately the rain cleared and the weather wise it became a lovely day which was enjoyed by the arrival of 40 members and visitors who enjoyed the games and company.

“Ella Samson, with 31 years of continuous membership, was asked to cut the cake with president Tim Barker following his speech.

“The delicious cake was enjoyed by all and many returned to the courts for

more games,” he said.

Croquet involves strategy and accuracy, just like many other sports, there are different ways to play croquet involving a great deal of concentration.

The basic game of Golf Croquet has become extremely popular and provides mild physical exercise together with tactics to keep the mind very active.

The Myall Park Croquet Club plays on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings starting at 8.45am.

New players are encouraged to join the practice sessions and other forms of the sport on Thursday’s at 9.15am.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

NDWBA Pennant Season 2021 is now completed, the Post Sectional Finals were contested at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 April.

Congratulations to our Grade 4 Blue side, on winning their section and making it to the Finals.

There were 3 sections in Grade 4, hence the 3 finalists were TGWBC, Lemon Tree Passage, (LTP) and Merewether. On Tuesday morning, LTP played against Merewether, result of this contest LTP 4 points and Merewether 1.

Our ladies went into battle against LTP in the afternoon, both teams bowled brilliantly and gained 5 points.

LTP now removed from the equation to be winners but still in with a chance to be Runners Up. Unfortunately despite going out to bowl with "high hopes", Thursday was to be a

different story for our ladies both our teams were defeated.

Merewether gained 5 points, their total now 6 points, winning the Final and the Flag.

Our Grade 4 Blue side Runners Up a great effort coming 2nd in a field of 17.

Well done to all our bowlers who played in the Pennant games, you are a credit to our Club as are all our members who "held the fort" back home.

Many thanks to the men from TGMBC who umpired for us and to Kathie Rimmer for being Controlling Body/ Umpire.

Tuesday 13 April: Social bowls played a game of Triples and a game of Pairs.

Francis Betar, Dawn Jones and Pam Gilchrist held a 9 shot lead by the 6th end against Sheila Rattray, Irene Roberts and Dawn May, but Dawn's team made a magnificent comeback eventually just losing by 2 shots 16 v 14.

Karuah make strong start

SATURDAY April 17 saw the Karuah RLFC teams take to the field for their first games of the 2021 season.

The Game Day Sponsors were Cole Bros Oysters and Indigico.

The Rooettes traveled down to Budgewoi, the ladies making a great start to the season with a 28-0 win.

The big hitters for the game were Helena Bills, Chantelle Gallagher, Jacqui Gornall, Chloe Zdebski, Bec Roe, Ashlei Grande, Sarsha Venables, Tia Lukaszewicz, Dallas Grey, Captain Tamara Smith, Kayla Campbell,

Shanah Roby, Chloe Taylor and Sharisse Gaiyer.

The runners were Helena Bills, Sarsha Venables, Tia Lukaszewicz, Bec Roe, Tamara Smith, Kelly Johnson, Kayla Campbell, Macey Elvidge, Ashlei Grande, Dallas Grey, Chloe Zdebski, Chantelle Gallagher, Renae Lamb, Sharisse Gaiyer, and Jacqui Gornall.

Myall Park Croquet Club

By Marian SAMPSON CROQUET is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages.

There are around 3,000 registered players in NSW alone.

It is a game that started in the 1800’s and was played in all British Colonies by the 1870’s, and has literally spread across the globe.

The Myall Park Croquet Club held it’s 30th anniversary fun day attracting plenty of attention from regular players and interested locals.

Tony Jones of the Myall Park Croquet Club told News Of The Area, “Despite a wet start to the day, volunteer workers had the Myall Park Croquet Club ready for our Anniversary Fun Day. “Michele Weir organised the stunning morning tea for those on arrival and the great CONTINUED Page 15
