Exhibition reflects on 2020

By Tara CAMPBELL IN troubling times, art has always been an excellent form of therapy, drawing from world events and reflecting on the emotions that have arisen because of these.

‘A Window on Life’ is the Cool Summer Exhibition at the Gallery, organised by non-forprofit group ‘Gallery in the Gardens', reflecting on the ‘extraordinary changes 2020 bought and its impact on our plans and dreams’, as stated in the exhibition biography.

The exhibition features works from local

artists only, showcasing artwork in a variety of media, hung in themes across the gallery.

Local artist and gallery member, Sonja Ridden, has many abstract artworks across the gallery, including ‘2020 Musings’, ‘Reflections’, ‘The Hermit’ and ‘Random Memories’, which all take different looks at 2020.

Joining Sonja are the brilliant works of Gail Rust, Di Ayers, Jan Johnson Furness, Emily Tseronis and many other talented artists.

“I think my favourite thing about this exhibition is the fact that visitors can see what they want to see and interpret the artworks in their own way,” Sonja said.

One of the standout artworks in the gallery is Di Ayers ‘Is the Beach Still There?’, a reflective artwork from the window of Di’s window, looking out at Jimmy’s Beach.

It truly is a captivating and unique artwork that is sure to impact visitors, reminding them

of the times during isolation that they longed for their favourite things.

“All artworks in the gallery are done by locals of the area.

“There are so many talented people in town, and everyone involved in this exhibition should feel extremely proud. “We’ve created something with a great variety; something for everyone,” said Sonja.

‘A Window on Life’ will be on display from 10:0am-4:00pm every day until 31 January at the Tea Gardens Gallery in the Gardens.

Hawks Nest Golf Club no part of residential development proposal for land on Sanderling Avenue FROM Page 1

HAWKS Nest Golf Club officials are seeking to reassure Club members and the general community that the Golf Club is not involved in a proposal to expand the area adjoining the club for a medium density residential development.

The ‘Hawks Nest Golf Club rezoning proposal’ was the title given to plans for the rezoning of land adjoining the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

The proposal has recently been renamed the ‘Hawks Nest rezoning proposal and planning agreement’, but information on the development

still appears on the Midcoast Council website under both titles.

Hawks Nest Golf Club General Manager Greg Acret said that while the development proposal had been called the ‘Hawks Nest Golf Club rezoning proposal’, it was given that title purely because of the land in question's proximity to the Club, and in no way because of any involvement of the Club.

While the Golf Club was involved in a development proposal in recent years, the Club ceased its involvement in the current proposal in mid-2018.

“During the original proposal, the actual Hawks Nest Golf Club put it out, asking if anyone was interested in developing the land,” said Hawks

Nest Golf Club President Stephen Gately.

“The Hawks Nest Golf Club was involved in a plan to get this land developed, but the memorandum of understanding actually ceased in July 2018.”

Since the Golf Club pulled out of the development proposal, developers have continued with plans to develop the land, located on Sanderling Avenue at Hawks Nest, to the immediate east of the car park and clubhouse of the Golf Club.

“The original proposal did include the developer buying this land from the club, but the original proposal was rejected in 2018, the developer then decided to continue with their development plans on a smaller scale, utilizing land next door to us, that they had purchased

from the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council,” said Mr Acret.

“The current development won't include any land that is owned by the Golf Club,” he said.

Mr Gately said that while the Golf Club supports the development in principle, the Club has no formal involvement in any ongoing development.

“The club’s position is that the existing footprint of the golf course will remain as it is.

“It is not our intention to build a new clubhouse, the clubhouse will absolutely remain where it is."

Jimmys Beach Hits New York Times

By Marian SAMPSON WE may not be taking travellers from the USA for some time, but for the avid readers of the New York Times, Hawks Nest and Jimmys Beach may have just been added to their bucket list.

News Of The Area is reliably informed that each year the New York Times puts out a list of the 52 places we love, and this year Jimmys Beach at Hawks Nest not only made the list but pipped all other destinations in Australia.

The article was spotted by an expat Australian Julie

Osborne who had spent time in the area as a five year old child and again in her early 30’s.

Julie’s uncle Geoff Lambert told News Of The Area, “Whenever she is able to get back to Australia and see her family in Canberra she never misses out on coming back to this area and loves nothing more than swimming and walking on Jimmys Beach. She has travelled extensively and always says this is the best place ever!

“So, you can imagine her delight when coming across this article,” he said.

Race organisers are currently working with State marine authorities to install temporary moorings as a back-up measure.

There is also a renewed focus on dinghy and trailerable sailing, using Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s newly acquired Bay Sailing Centre in Salamander Bay as a host site.

Regatta Director Jennie Hughes said, “2020 was a tough

year in our sport with a number of major regattas and national championships being cancelled due to COVID. “We're hoping that our Notice of Race will provide a glimmer of hope that we’ll successfully stage this year’s event,” Jennie Hughes said.

Council after feedback on donations Community donations policy on Public Exhibition MIDCOAST Council is reminding community members to submit feedback on the revised draft Community Donations Policy, before the public exhibition period ends on 27 January.

The revised draft Community Donations Policy guides Council and community organisations to deliver projects and activities that support

local connections and the retention of unique, diverse and culturally rich communities across the MidCoast.

While the policy was first adopted by Council in March 2019, the revised policy was submitted to Council in May this year, with minor amendments relating to wording in relation to eligibility.

Councillors have since

workshopped amendments to ensure the policy supports social connections through programs and partnerships and allows funds to be allocated to changing community priorities.

The Great Lakes Paddocks, a local farm in Wootton, took this challenge and created the series ‘Summer Evenings in the Back Paddock’, a recurring family friendly live music event.

The final event of the series will be held at Great Lakes Paddocks on 23 January with The Southern Hold as the final act.

be playing a mix of indie, folk, rock and acoustic tunes.

Premiering with a New Year’s Eve gig, the Summer Evenings events have showcased the talents of The Good Fellas, Goldheist Collaboration, Darren Jack and Young Floyd.

Sinking boat near Broughton Island

THE Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked at 7:00am on Monday 18 January, by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, responding to a report of an emergency distress beacon (EPIRB) that had been activated in the Broughton Island area.

The helicopter arrived on scene and landed at Empire Bay where four occupants had been picked up out of the water by a passing boat after their boat sank.

The Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team assessed all four male occupants, three in their 20’s and the other in his 40’s, with no injuries reported.

All four were transported back to Nelson Bay in a stable condition by Volunteer Marine Rescue.

DEAR News Of The Area, I WOULD like to address inaccuracies of the recent article titled “Plans to Hawks Nest expand Golf Club” (sic) which appeared in the 14 January 2021 edition.

Firstly, there is no proposal to expand the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Secondly, there is no proposal or plan to relocate the existing clubhouse.

Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, intercepting legal representatives’emails, retrieving the relevant account details, altering them to their own account details, then forwarding the email on to the buyer who unwittingly deposits into the scammer’s account. To think that your deposit or balance could be stolen in this way is nothing short of horrifying. Remember that if you have exchanged contracts already and you are processing the settlement funds and they go missing, you are still legally bound to continue with the purchase of the property. It’s your money. Keep it safe. Deny scammers their windfall.

Club Fours Championship lacked nothing in atmosphere

By John SLATER 13 JANUARY The format for today was changed from two games of 18 end 2-bowl triples to the old format of two games of 12 ends 3-bowl triples.

Some players were having difficulty managing 36 ends in one day.

Having the changes being announced, a great turnout of 59 bowlers faced the starter on a beautiful summer's day.

The winners were Bob Peady, John Yabsley and Doug Naylor on a countback with 20 points.

The lucky losers were Col Walton, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson on a countback with 18 points.

16 January: The semi-final round of the Club Championship Fours was played today in cool, sunny conditions with a prevailing southeasterly breeze.

In the first game, the side of Chris Ross, Dennis Ashbridge, Scott Fitzalan and Jesse Henry opposed the team of Greg Smith, Jeff Baker, Greg Pearson and Stu Dorahy and in the second game, Rob Young, Dave Garcia, Dave Perry and Leigh Hunt took on Col Amos, Neil Kibble, Mark Hair and Ron Webster.

The first result was a surprise with the Stu Dorahy four recording an easy win 28-9 and in the second game the Ron Webster side managed a good 22-13 win over the Leigh Hunt four.

A beautiful summer day, great crowd in, and a country and western singer playing in the background.

It played out as a good game but never a great game with the Stu Dorahy side, boasting two Club Champions, just being too solid for their opposition.

The Dorahy team lead and second, certainly set up each end with bowls in the head making it really tough for their opponents three and four.

Adding to this was the sublime form of Stu Dorahy.

I have yet to see a better tempo and unhurried delivery that was on display today from Stu. It was not surprising therefore that the Stu Dorahy four ran away with the match 2514.

Congratulations to them and indeed all teams that competed in the first Championship event of 2021.

Thanks also to the two umpires from the weekend, Doug Andrews and Ron Green.

In other news; Nominations for the club minor pairs are on the board and closes on the 25 Jan. The draw will take place shortly after with the first games on Saturday 30 January.

Sunday bowls has started for 2021 and entries are welcome from all players, men and women, novice or otherwise, You will be assured of an entertaining day in great company.

On the Pennant scene, the selectors have scheduled Saturday 23 Jan as a pennants trial game day.

Grade 4 will play Grade 5 and Grade 6 will play Grade 7.

Games will start at 10am with a BBQ to finish.

More details from the selectors in the next week.

There may also be trials on 24 January but players will be notified.

This smart political thriller helmed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist) is a gripping tale full of intrigue and tension. In 1980s Beirut, an American diplomat (Jon Hamm) is called back into service to save a kidnapped colleague (Mark Pellegrino) from the group that is possibly responsible for his own family’s death. The script from Tony Gilroy (the Bourne franchise, Michael Clayton) is both tight and nuanced, and the film also benefits from outstanding performances from Hamm and co-star Rosamund Pike.

Overall, Beirut may be low on all-out action, but it is a realistic, gritty thriller that doesn’t forget to entertain in the process.

With cooking competitions, celebrity chefs promoting new cookbooks and foodie travelogues from all over the world, there’s no shortage of food-focused TV, and tonight QI is getting in on the act. Sharing a table with host Sandi Toksvig (above) are comedians Alan Davies, Mark Watson, Sara Pascoe and Phill Jupitus. They’ll be chowing down on fun facts and dispelling all manner of restaurant-related misconceptions, ranging from the power of rice to calorie counting, the psychology of cutlery and Ronald McDonald. In a highlight of the series, they are joined by Julian the Magnificent, who trains Toksvig in the art of sabrage, that is, opening a champagne bottle with a sword.

TUESDAY 12 January: First day back at bowls, here's hoping virus wise our Bowling Year goes according to plan.

A good turn up of bowlers, format for play was 2 games of 2 bowls Fours, 18 ends.

Prior to play, Club President Deyonne Page presented Dawn May her 10 year Membership Certificate from Womens Bowls NSW. Lorraine Murphy, Jean Glover, Judy McGavock and Karen McPhie took an early, but small lead against Dot Dallas, Lynda Richards, Robyn Webster and Kayelene Pearson.

On the 6th end the score was 5 all, 9th end 7 all, 11th end 8 all.

By the 15th end, Kayelene's team held a 2 shot lead, the next 3 ends belonged to Karen's crew gaining 8 shots, winning 17 v 11.

Jan Coomer, Dawn Jones, Wendy Jones and Pat Baker were down by 6 shots on the 15 end (15 v

9) v Sheila Rattray, Judi Polak, Deyonne Page and Dale Winter.

History repeats itself, Pat's team scoring 8 shots on the next 3 ends, claiming victory 17 v 15. Now for a lesson in "never give up", Lyn Nightingale, Dawn May, Bette Saillard and Sandra

Over the next 8 ends Sandra's team remained scoreless, finally going down by 6 shots 25 v 19. The winners on the day winning with the lowest margin were Jan, Dawn , Wendy and Pat. Sue Morris, Judi Polak, Lorraine Murphy had a convincing win against Helen O,Harae (new bowler), Sheril Johnson, Lynda Richards and Kayelene Pearson 19 v 5.

In 2014 she bowled with Dennis Ashbridge, Robyn Webster and Ron Webster winning the Mixed Pairs.

She also represented our Club in numerous Pennant Teams and was a staunch supporter of TGWBC. Olive is remembered by our Club members not only for her bowling skills but as a lady who really enjoyed life and brought great joy to all who knew her.

Our thoughts are with Ken and their family at this time, Olive will be forever in our memories.
