By Thomas O'KEEFE REALITY hit for one new Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service (RFS) recruit at routine training on Tuesday, 12 December.

During a combined RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW fire drill at Palm Lake Resort, suddenly the RFS ‘Tea Gardens 7’ truck was repurposed by Fire Control to assist at a real bushfire at Wards River, north of Stroud.

The fire itself was not the most frightening part of the adventure, rather, rocketing down the everbumpy Bucketts Way at top speed, sirens wailing, dodging potholes and motorists while threading

“Fires at Mill Creek Rd and Johnsons River had joined together into one big one, which we were facing at Wards River,” RFS Captain David Bright told NOTA. “There is no way to control it, so we must try to contain it, chasing grass fires as they come down the hill.”

Dry grass fires burn fast and unpredictably, leaping out in random, wind-blown ‘fingers’, capriciously changing direction with the mercurial winds.

Unconfirmed reports say at least one fire was sparked by ‘dry-lighting’, deep in the rugged scrub-covered hills, yet the main concern was preventing it from lancing out of the scrub into open paddocks.

The Hindu Kush-like terrain was full of folds and gullies, the fire played hide and seek, poking out and flare up here, smouldering in the cow patties everywhere else.

The helicopter buzzed above as eye-in-thesky, while valiant volunteer units from Booral and Avon joined the Tea Gardens firefighters, spending most of the day dragging the livereel up rocky hillsides, nooks and crannies, or jumping on spot-fires in the grass.

PARKING around Winda Woppa is about to get hairy again, if the October Long Weekend was any indication.

During the Labour Day holiday, The Anchorage and The Boulevarde, the key beachside roads along Jimmys Beach at Winda Woppa, became a hazardous bumper-tobumper parking lot, with cars lining the unguttered roads, many opting to create their own parking spaces illegally upon nature strips and even in the middle of the road to avoid sand.

Certain points along both The Anchorage, the only road in or out of the peninsula, became uncontrolled one-way choke points, bottlenecking the area and denying possible emergency access.

“Following further discussions in September, a ‘No Stopping’ zone was installed on The Anchorage, opposite Jimmys Beach carpark to stop vehicles parking on this sweeping bend, where motorists would previously park with parts of the vehicle sticking out onto the road.

“There are a number of issues at play here as residents may not be supportive of parking signs along the beachfront due to the visual impact, and with already limited parking areas, visitors need spaces to park.”

Council says the Winda Woppa Preservation Association have not requested additional parking restrictions in the Winda Woppa area, but as congestion in popular seaside areas is difficult to control, motorists may ignore parking signs, and this then becomes an enforcement issue.

Moira Parade Park renewal

PARK facilities and toilet amenities at Hawks Nest’s Moira Parade Park are due to open once again to the public by Friday, 22 December, according to MidCoast Council.

The much-beleaguered toilet facilities have been shut to the public for months, ever since extreme vandalism rendered most of the internal fittings and toilet parts rendered unsafe and useless, in what can only be described as a petulant fit of impotent, misdirected rage.

In July, Council advised that, “All toilet pans, hand wash basins, toilet cisterns and pipe work were damaged, Council is

filing a police report and investigating options for vandal-proof fittings and fixtures.”

More recently, Council announced, “The amenities have undergone significant repairs, and we are now just awaiting new doors that will complete the refurbishment.”

The toilet block refurbishment happily coincides with the upgrades to the outdoor play equipment, the first such in 30 years, an inclusion in Council’s 2023 Playspace Strategy.

“Council is working to have the playground and the amenities open to the public by Friday 22 December,” a spokesperson from Council said.

q The Moira Parade public toilets have been off-limits for months, now awaiting new doors.

During the November Council Community Conversations, questions were also raised about the nearby Moira Parade boat ramp, which becomes extremely busy as the only boat-launch location in Hawks Nest, the others being at Winda Woppa and Tea Gardens.

“The boat ramp is cleaned twice per year, another clean is scheduled before Christmas 2023,” Council stated.

The Playspace looks close to its visual concept, last printed in NOTA on 23 November, with its two separate structures: one for climbing and sliding, the other a novel circular multiswing structure for several kids to enjoy at once.

Special Santa to visit Myall Coast and Carols

CHRISTMAS memories will no doubt be made and revitalised as Carols ring out at Pindimar on Saturday 23 December, calling in the jolly old elf, Santa himself, on Christmas Eve. From 5pm, upon the shores of South Pindimar, the PindimarBundabah Community Association will run a free Carols event, complete with local live music by Doug Gillespie and his many muso friends.

“We shall decorate the big Christmas tree for the kids,” Lesley Lane, from the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association (PBCA) told NOTA. “At 6pm, Santa will arrive in his electric ‘sleigh’, and give lollies to girls and boys, there will be his little helper the 'Nice Elf', too.”

“It’s BYO everything, and kindly bring cash, as there are lots of raffles (and poor phone reception).

“The PBCA Carols have gone on for well over 20 years, and are a local institution for which the committee has prepared several weeks.

“It's just a great way for kids and adults alike to ring in Christmas, including a party until dark.”

The summer heat will not deter Santa, as he will hitch a ride atop the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service (RFS) truck on Christmas Eve to deliver early Christmas lollies to kids all over the region.

The Santa Express will visit the Myall Coast towns of Pindimar, Bundabah, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

“Starting from 10:30am at Pindimar North, we will take Santa through Pindimar South, then Bundabah, and back to check

on Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer,” RFS Captain David Bright informed NOTA. “Then, from 1:30pm, we will ferry Santa out to Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, finishing up around 4:30pm, so he can get back and prepare for his trip around the world.”

q Every year Santa hitches a ride on Christmas Eve with his RFS helpers to rest his reindeer.

Engineered stone prohibition to make workplaces safer NEW South Wales will prohibit the use, supply and manufacture of engineered stone from 1 July 2024.

NSW joined most other states and territories in agreeing to ban the dangerous product by the middle of next year.

Minister for Work Health and Safety, Sophie Cotsis said, “I congratulate all workers, unions, medical experts and businesses that I stood side by side as we campaigned for this day.

“This is about saving lives, the evidence is in, and the Minns Government has been a strong advocate for this.

“My message to business and consumers is this: it’s time for you to stop buying this stuff.

“Don’t enter into any further contracts.”

Safe Work Australia recommended the prohibition under the model WHS laws to protect thousands of workers

from respirable crystalline silica (silica dust), which is generated in high levels when workers cut, shape, or polish engineered stone.

THE sounds of Christmas graced the lake at Tea Gardens Grange as the choristers of the Myall Melodians sang a medley of Christmas carols to residents on Tuesday, 6 December.

A typically beautiful and mild early-summer evening backed off a 30 degree day, even a gentle breeze was welcomed by dozens of Grange residents who were serenaded by the Melodians across the lake, occupying the Clubhouse deck with live musical accompaniment.

A full catalogue of classic carols was interwoven with historical titbits, like how ‘Silent Night’ was sung during the WWI Christmas truce in 1914.

Residents joined in singing some long-time favourites, and some less traditional songs including Leonard Cohen’s 'Hallelujah'.

“It's entertaining, sounds great, and you can bring their own chairs and sit together, or apart,” one resident commented.

Santa sails with Port Stephens Water Police

By Simon EKINS PORT Stephens Water Police will have a special visitor on Christmas Eve, with Santa Claus set to visit various beach locations across the area.

As well as presents, Santa is helping to deliver an important safety message.

“As we enter the summer boating season, Port Stephens Water Police would like to reinforce our safety message to those using the waterways this summer,” Sergeant Clint Brown said.

“If on a vessel ensure you are carrying all the safety equipment required for that vessel, know where

it is stowed on the vessel, ensure it is accessible and maintained in good working order.”

By taking common sense safety precautions, residents and visitors can ensure a fun outing to the beach or on Port Stephens’ waterways doesn’t turn into a tragedy.

“Be smart about your actions, stop for a second and think, is what I am doing safe?” Sergeant Brown said.

“If you have to think about the answer, it probably isn’t safe, and you should cease that activity.

“If you are at one of our surf beaches, please swim between the red and yellow flags.

“If boating, ensure there are enough life jackets onboard the vessel for each person and that the life jacket is the appropriate type for the activity.

“If the vessel is an electric start, ensure you have an accessible fire extinguisher in good working order.

“Maintain all other safety items and always tell someone where you are going and when you are expected back,” he said.

NSW Marine Rescue monitors marine radio 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“If venturing offshore, be sure to log on and off with Marine Rescue,” Sergeant Brown said.

“Enjoy the waterways but please respect the ocean and other waterway users.

“Merry Christmas, be safe and enjoy the festive season.”

Stinker’s History: The North Side

By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE GEOFF Fidden started commercial fishing in 1948; part of a highly respected fishing dynasty that stretches over five generations dating back to 1918.

Geoff’s grandfather, Bill Goldsmith started the family connection with the sea when he arrived on the northern side of Port Stephens from Mosquito Island in the Hunter River.

I visited Geoff on many occasions and we talked for hours in his home, just metres from the water at Pindimar, a small fishing and oyster village on the northern shore of Port Stephens.

I enjoyed every moment and learned more about the fishing game in those few hours than I had done over many years of recreational

VIEW Club hears of life in the Police Force

THE MYALL River VIEW Club held its last meeting for 2023 at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on Friday, 8 December, listening to guest speaker Jennie Koster, President of Raymond Terrace VIEW. A former policewoman, stationed variously at Newtown, Kings Cross/ Darlinghurst, and later Newcastle, Ms Koster regaled the room with several colourful anecdotes about being one among very few women on the Force in the 1980s and 1990s.

“I always wanted to be a policewoman, and only ever wanted to be a street cop,” Ms Koster said.

“When I went through the academy, there were only eight women in the class, and we had to share lockers.”

Treading a strong undercurrent of misogyny, Jennie witnessed many confronting things firsthand, such as being mistaken for part of the act during a vice call-out, and 4WD training upon Stockton Dunes as she prepared for siting police radio transmitters amidst remote and rugged terrain.

Ms Koster retired in 1990, just after the Newcastle earthquake, and also directing traffic through floodwaters at Sandgate in the regulation uniform skirt.

Myall River VIEW is promoting The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal, to ensure thousands of disadvantaged students can be supported with their education in 2024.

Aiming to raise more than $5million nationally, which will provide more than 12,600 children access to critical learning and mentoring programs to help them stay engaged and

on the north side of the Port in May 1927 following a failed attempt to establish an ice works in 1917.

Marketable commodities were shark hides, livers (to become cod liver oil) and the fins which were considered a gastronomic delicacy by the Chinese.

Sharks were caught by netting.

The first netting took place in Salamander Bay and yielded 30 whaler sharks of between 100 and 500 pounds.

Soon however systematic netting, which accounted for approximately 25,000 sharks, exhausted the supply around Port Stephens; business suffered and in 1933 was forced to close.

The plant was then converted to a fish and oyster product cannery until it was eventually destroyed by fire in 1938.

Looking across the port, I could see it every day and often wondered what made the place “tick”.

One thing I was aware of was the richness and abundance of fish over on the north side.

I’ve always been interested in the Pindimar Ice Works, the shark industry that boomed until the shark numbers dwindled and the Port Stephens Canning Factory that followed.

Christmas Special IT is Christmas time, so naturally our thoughts turn to our family and friends.

Each year I produce a two-page article detailing my family's year that I can attach with Christmas cards being sent to those who live far away or those we simply have not caught up with this year.

As we get older, the Christmas cards that we mail out to our closest and dearest are getting noticeably less in number.

Plus, changes in the postal service sees the cost of sending those cards becoming increasingly more expensive.

Across the globe, it has been a tumultuous year.

Our world is in a mess and no one appears able to solve the serious issues involved in the Russian/Ukraine invasion and now the Israel/Hamas/Palestine tragedy.

We are also seeing more weather events each year with bushfires, droughts, floods, earthquakes and cyclones dominating our outlooks.

It all sounds too dreadful, doesn’t it?

However, it is Christmas time.

A time to make plans to be better and kinder people to those around us.

Keeping those thoughts in place for the coming year will test our mental and internal fortitude.

We know that the best laid plans of man may not happen in every instance, but we should make kindness our number one priority.

Turning to the good side of life, I have

I can't, but I can remember the day itself and the enjoyment of getting together with family members, some of whom are no longer here.

Without getting sentimental on you (cue Coldplay music) just having your really enjoyed writing my weekly opinion pieces for publication in this newspaper as I near my 40th contribution.

Prior to turning my hand to newspaper columns, I ran my own business for 40 years, operating in every state of Australia plus regularly in some nine overseas locations.

My number one focus was on getting results for my clients, which in turn looked after my own needs and aspirations.

It has been a different experience writing opinion pieces for local consumption.

I can’t be too black or white with my views.

I can't show left or right political bias.

If I regularly offended readers with my views in these smaller communities, I’m sure the Editor would punt me from the scene.

This actually becomes quite hard for a guy like me.

During my career, I was regularly voted into directorships in companies that were looking like becoming economic dogs.

Having the opportunity to write my fishing articles with freedom to express my environmental and sustainability concerns has been a pleasure.

The feedback I am receiving is growing as the local and visiting fishing population realise that I now write a regular weekly column in the

NOTA. As we move into the summer months, I would ask that any fishing stories and fishy photographs be passed on to me so that I can relay the news to our readers.

I really like to see photos of kids with their fishing efforts which, when printed, are eagerly cut out and pasted to the refrigerator door where they remain for many years to

come.

As it is with my fishing article, I am enjoying the opportunity to present my weekly local historical collection.

I am receiving an equal response to both articles.

As a keen local historian, I am of the belief that we should all be aware of the contribution of the Worimi people and the early pioneering families who made Port Stephens what it is today.

From our earliest days, when the Worimi

You would acknowledge the negative impacts on pristine terrestrial systems of similarly sized developments.

Why not have the same concerns about marine ecosystems?

It is obvious to me and many others that addressing the urgent need to transition to renewable energy by unnecessarily degrading more of a relatively pristine ecosystem could have as devastating an effect as continuing to use fossil fuels.

Please note I have no issue with the visual amenity of wind farms.

My sole concern is the marine ecosystem which is relatively unknown and untouched.

It is a false economy on the part of the Commonwealth Government and proponents to even bother with the environmental studies

for the purpose of building offshore wind farms in Australia when we already know so much more about and can manage impacts on the terrestrial ecosystem.

Why are you supporting the development of a renewable energy source that costs twice as much as onshore wind and will take twice as much time to build?

In Australia we have ample already degraded space onshore and adequate wind adjacent to current and proposed poles and wires corridors.

Using the false dichotomy of offshore wind or climate catastrophe in Australia, where we have degraded space onshore, is a really amateurish act on the part of the

No matter how small the gift, it will be appreciated. I was trying to think of an inspiring quote to add, and though many came to mind this one by Betty Reese tickled me: “If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.”

Gifts don't have to be expensive, in fact many of the best ones can be made with things you already have: homemade biscuits, jams or herb pots, and vouchers such as a one-hour head massage, or an oven or fridge clean.

For younger children it could be a voucher for a day at a waterpark, zoo or museum (with you taking them -- this doubles up as a gift for their parents as they'll get some time out).

Art classes or supplies, a craft or cooking day voucher, or a board game that comes with the promise of being one of the players, are gifts that keep on giving.

These presents also give a gift back to the environment that is over-clogged with cheap presents that are now discarded and buried in landfill.

Justifying the development of offshore wind in Australia on the basis that it doesn’t harm whales while ignoring all the other threats it poses to the marine ecosystem is a ploy I would not expect the Australian Government to stoop to.

When is the Government going to look at the whole complex picture rather than being mesmerised by a currently trendy but risky initiative that is totally unnecessary in Australia where there is lots of suitable onshore space, unlike most other parts of the world where onshore space is scarce?

Bulahdelah Golf Club Report 35 VETS played their last Monthly Mug for 2023 on Thursday December 7th and the winner was D.Watkins with 65nett from K.Hughes with 67nett on a c/b from J.Crockett.

NTPs were M.South, M.Gardiner and G.Harvey. K.Hughes was the best putter with 25 putts and A.Berry got the jackpot with a great shot on the 17th. Raffle winners were Dave (x2), Wayne, John, Garry and Gary.

Saturday December 9th was a testing day for the 27 golfers who braved the heat to contest the December Mug and the 2023 Mug of Mugs.

The event was sponsored by the Styles Family and Kevin was there with his 2 beautiful grand-daughters to present the Mug of Mugs to Zac Watt who was the best of the eligible contenders with a 79nett. The Monthly Mug was won by W.Coleman with 67nett from A.Gardiner with 69nett on a c/b from M.Sakalis.

Before his sudden death at the hands of an American big-game shooter in 2015, Cecil was roaming in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, where he was also being filmed and observed by Oxford University researchers, who captured stunning footage.
