$15,000 raised at Charity Pig Races HUGE crowds descended on the Tea Gardens Country Club on Easter Saturday (April 16) for the annual Charity Pig Races, in support of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club and the NSW Variety Bash.

Now in its sixth year, the races were a huge hit with locals and visitors alike, with the event raising $12,000 for the Surf Club and $3000 for Variety.

Warren Gooley, the General Manager at the Country Club, said the Club was “proud as punch” to be able to support the event.

“It is a great day,” Warren said.

“This was the best day and the best crowd we have had yet.

“We couldn’t be happier.”

There was something on offer for everyone in attendance, with droves of eager punters lining the fences of the pig racing arena throughout the day.

The thoroughbred racing pics, supplied by Noah’s Farm, traversed the tight corners of the racing track with surprising speed and agility, drawing roars of support from the boisterous crowd.

Kids were entertained with face painting and clown performances, while brave souls tried their luck on the mechanical bull.

Refreshments were enjoyed from the Country Club bar, with great food on offer from The Garden Eatery.

“It is well supported, and the kids have a great day,” Warren said.

“We want it to be a day that people don’t feel they have to come to, but instead really want to come to.

“We had a lot more kids this year which was great, and everyone was very well behaved,” he said.

The day was very well supported by a range of local businesses, with race day sponsors including Barry Bros Butchery, Datrys Tech, Myall Coast Realty, Pixel Pest Control, Purcell Mount Solicitors, Rod Morrison Gyprock Services, Woody’s Building and Garden Centre, Win TV and the Country Club.

Amanda Osmond, Junior Activities Coordinator, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club said, “The money raised from the Pig Races will better the Nippers program, purchase four new rescue boards, improve our radios and communications, purchase new first aid kits, purchase new shade gazebos and provide much needed training resources.

“The club would like to thank the many generous patrons and the Tea Gardens Country Club for their ongoing support.

“This fundraising allows us to do what we do best and keep people safe on our beach.

“See you all at the beach,” said Amanda.

Event sponsor Rod Morrison said, “It is a great fundraiser for the Surf Club to support the Nippers programs and everything else.

“It is an unbelievable crowd that comes here, it’s awesome.

From 1 April 2022, parties to family law proceedings can apply directly to the Court for information held by the ATO about the superannuation interests of their spouse, former spouse or former de facto partner.

Superannuation forms part of the pool of assets to be divided in the event of separation.

Circumstances arise where parties refuse to disclose their superannuation interests or under-disclose their superannuation interests, which can create delay and increase costs in resolving property settlements. The new information-sharing process should make it harder for parties to hide or under-disclose their superannuation assets in family law proceedings, and hopefully reduce the time, cost and complexity for parties seeking superannuation information.

The process is facilitated through the Court’s online Portal, and the Court anticipates that responses will be provided

within 7 days; providing an efficient and cost-effective way to obtain the information. There are limits on how the information can be used, notably that any information received through the process is only to be used for the purpose of the family law proceedings.

Information sharing between the Court and Government departments has been effective in parenting matters, through co-operation with the Department of Communities & Justice (formerly DOCS); but to date has not been utilised as extensively in property matters.

This new process is another way in which the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia is seeking to achieve its overarching purpose of facilitating the just resolution of disputes according to law as quickly, inexpensively and efficiently as possible.

ANZAC Day at Bulahdelah

THE community of Bulahdelah will commemorate ANZAC Day in two separate services conducted by the Bulahdelah RSL Sub-branch on Monday 25 April.

The Dawn Service will commence with a march, with those participating mustering at approximately 5:00am at the intersection of Meade and Crawford Street.

A second march will commence at 10:45am.

After not being able to run a service last year due to the pandemic, the sub-Branch are looking forward to welcoming the community back for the important day.

Steve Newman, secretary of the subBranch, says that the road and intersection will be closed off and that those wishing to march can meet at the Bulahdelah Hospital on Richmond Street.

“Unfortunately, there is no allocation for ADF members this year due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the flood cleanups,” he said.

Mr Bromhead said the new division will ensure there is a renewed focus on the health services and outcomes for people living in regional and rural NSW, importantly in the Myall Lakes.

Health Division is a key step towards ensuring the public health system has the needs and expectations of the communities of regional NSW at its heart.

“This announcement is a big win for the people of the Myall Lakes, ensuring the health needs of our region are met.”

The new division will support Regional Health Minister Bronnie Taylor to support and coordinate the development and implementation of a new Regional Health Plan, providing a single point of contact and advocacy for issues that are common across the Regional Health environment.

Minister Taylor said that many of these issues are long-term, including workforce attraction and contention, cross-border issues and communication/ engagement with communities, clinicians and stakeholders.

The division will sit at the top level within the Ministry of Health and ensure that health, social and economic data, business intelligence tools and stakeholder feedback are all integrated within the division.

Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor said the division will sit at the top level within the Ministry of Health and ensure strong advocacy of regional health issues.

“The Regional Health Division will support the NSW Government’s commitment to bring a renewed focus on recruitment to key healthcare roles in regional NSW and to find innovative ways to support nurses, doctors, allied health practitioners, and the vital support service providers who work in healthcare facilities, to live and work in our regional communities,” Mrs Taylor said.

“The Division will be led by a Coordinator-General for Regional Health, which will report directly to the Secretary of NSW Health, Susan Pearce, and support and provide advice to the Minister for Regional Health about issues concerning health in regional communities.”

The members within this group are all ex-Service or family of ex-Service personnel, with volunteers supporting the event behind the scenes.

The organisers of this event say the event is held out of respect for the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free. "(The event is) for my lost mates and unit members that checked out during or after their service.”

However, the group welcomes all community members to attend.

The event will start at 5:30am with a Muster Parade with rum and bonox or rum and coffee (or another beverage within your hip flask).

This is BYO. The service will commence at 5:50am.

After the service there will be a Gunfire Breakfast and a chance to enjoy “tea or coffee, or your own poison”.

RSL NSW President Ray James said that commemorating significant moments in our military history is vital to Australia, as a people, a community, and a nation.

“As the custodians of the ANZAC spirit, RSL NSW and its sub-Branches work tirelessly to ensure that people honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served their country in all conflicts,” Mr James said.

Inaction on Sanderling Rezoning

IT has been weeks since a petition closed against the rezoning of land at 1 Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest, and organisers are frustrated that no action has been taken by NSW Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts.

The land at 1 Sanderling Rd, Hawks Nest was rezoned from RE1 Public Recreation to R3 Medium Density Residential in April 2021, and

received national attention after featuring on ABC Four Corners.

Over 75 submissions were made against the rezoning, with community members reaching out to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to ask for help.

However, it was advised the land was in MidCoast Council hands and was a ‘done deal’.

Nest Development’, a Facebook group to inform the community of planning proposals in the area, advocated for community members to make their voice heard, and through legal advice, Stuart Coppock created the petition with the hopes of a reversal of the MidCoast Council decision.

The e-petition was signed by 5256 people, with community members and residents across NSW opting to sign the petition, to fight

for a reversal of the decision.

“The government e-petition for Sanderling Ave gained over 5,200 signatures which is great considering our little town has a population of just over 2000.

“Our petition expired on 3 March and I feel it’s time we ask the Minister (Roberts) what action he is taking.

“Since the petition expired, we have not heard anything from the Minister, nor is he answering his emails,” Ms Poldmaa said.

FORMER Silverchair frontman Daniel Jones may face jail time after pleading guilty to a high-range drink driving incident that led to a crash near North Arm Cove.

Police said Johns had been three times over the legal alcohol limit when his car crossed to the wrong side of the road and crashed into a van on the Pacific Highway near North Arm Cove at approximately about 10.30pm on Wednesday March 23.

He voluntarily admitted himself into a rehabilitation facility after the accident in which he remains.

Voting At The Federal Election

WITH the Federal Election called for 21 May 2022, it is time to make sure that you understand your voting obligations.

All Australian citizens aged over eighteen years are expected to take part in this compulsory voting

process.

Pre-polling will open two weeks before the May 21 election date – but Australians must have an acceptable reason to vote early, Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers warned.

election, at polling booths across the country.

However you can apply for a postal vote directly through the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au/pva.

Simpson to focus on “health, aged care, climate action and jobs”

THE upcoming Federal Election has been announced for 21 May 2022 and News Of The Area is introducing you to the candidates for the election.

Alex Simpson holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and physics and has worked as a research assistant developing energy storage technology.

Mr Simpson is running as a Labor candidate for the Lyne Electorate in the upcoming election and believes that the electorate deserves a voice.

“The serious problems that the people in this region are facing show that we aren’t properly represented.

“The neglect of our hospitals, for example, has a history going back years

and despite the rhetoric, politicians at the State and Federal level have so far failed to deliver on health promises.

“Thousands of people recognise these failings; many speak out, some take action by signing petitions, others join action groups or unions, and so as a result of that I’ve decided to run for election,” he told News Of The Area.

As a son of a single mother, a leader of a youth theatre group and an active member in the community, Mr Simpson believes his experiences have helped him to understand some of the key issues that many members of the electorate face.

“I’ve seen how hard it can be to balance work and home life as a single parent, and how much harder that can get when parents aren’t given the

“I’ve known young people who have suffered from family and domestic violence and it is shocking how prevalent it can be, and how important it is to get access to suitable support services,” Mr Simpson said.

Mr Simpson is a former battery researcher, working on new and better technologies to support an energy transition, and formerly worked at LiddellBayswater power stations.

“For every one person working in the fossil fuel industry, there are thousands more relying on the work they do. “Those workers deserve respect, and their contributions need to be acknowledged.

“Labor’s focus has always been on working people,

and they understand the importance of an energy transition, to protect both working people and our climate future.

“I believe my experience, in both battery research and the power industry, gives me a unique opportunity to understand that transition,” he said.

If elected, he hopes to focus on health, aged care, climate action and jobs and skills in the area, proudly supporting the announced Labor commitments.

Mr Simpson said that although he is a Labor party member, he encourages those with reservations to at least hear what he has to say.

“I’m not a Labor robot, I’m a local first-time candidate putting all their energy into getting better outcomes for

this electorate.

“For me, the Labor platform is an opportunity,

providing us with the tools to fix the problems that we all face,” he said.

Extracts from brigade meetings are livened up by comical comments from members at fire scenes.

The Brigade’s interaction with the community is highlighted and their battle with the great Lone Pine bushfire of 2016 is graphically documented.

Awards to members are given due mention as are the numerous certificates of appreciation from varied community groups.

Being situated near a major arterial highway, the Brigade also responds to traffic accidents, which can be very traumatic for those members who attend.

It would be hard to think of any other group of unpaid volunteers which has contributed more to the social fabric of Karuah over such a long time than the fire brigade.

Paul needs congratulating for his

efforts to preserve this vital part of history for generations to come.

His other book 'The Lone Pine Fire 2016', financed by the RSL, raised some $3600 which was split three ways amongst local brigades.

To finish I will bring your attention to an interesting headline attributed to a local newspaper, after a Karuah craft group presented a quilt to the Brigade.

The quilt now takes pride of place in the village centre.

The paper's headline stated in bold type: 'Karuah River Craft Group thanks RFS for Battling Lone Pine Fire with quilt’.

Really? Perhaps they ran out of water.

The book costs $30 and is available from the RFS and the Karuah Centre.

A Flaming Good Read

By Geoff WALKER KARUAH, like many towns bypassed by expressways, seems to be taking on something of a rebirth as a cultural stopover and writers are putting it well and truly on the map.

The latest publication to come out of the village is 'The Story of the Karuah Fire Brigade' by Paul Mulvaney from the Karuah Local History Group.

The Karuah and District RSL and 'Karuah Working Together' financed the Project.

If a picture speaks a thousand words, then this book is well up there in tracing the development of a grass-roots bushfire brigade from its inception to a well oiled professional service.

It is liberally illustrated with numerous colour palettes and is meticulously researched.

Apprenticeship scholarships open

LOCAL first year apprentices facing financial or personal hardship will be supported with a $15,000 scholarship to undertake their trade and study through a NSW Government scholarship program.

The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO, a passionate advocate of vocational education for more than 30 years.

Bert started his career in the manufacturing industry and developed

a keen appreciation of apprenticeship training.

He then rose to become the head of the Metal Trades Industry Association and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Training Awards in 2013.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said people can now apply for a Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship which will support 120 people to either start, change, or further their career.

“This scholarship program offers a great

incentive for eligible locals to kick-start their career,” Mr Bromhead said.

“Whether you need to purchase new tools, cover fuel or car maintenance, or pay for additional study, these scholarships have helped people overcome personal barriers to finish their apprenticeships and follow their trade calling.”

The NSW Government will invest $1.8 million in the program, which provides $5,000 over three years to support apprentices who demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and

training and are committed to their on the job and formal training.

The scholarships are designed to assist apprentices in NSW who have demonstrated hardship in their personal circumstances, capability for vocal education and training of their trade training and a positive attitude and application in workplace and formal training.

They are open to NSW registered apprentices in metropolitan and country areas, in addition to school based apprenticeships.

Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens said there were more than 107,000 people in-training across NSW, a 29 percent increase on the year before.

“Apprenticeships are a critical part of ensuring NSW has a pipeline of skilled workers, but we also understand the financial limitations and challenges that arise for apprentices while completing their trade,” Mr Henskens said.

“As NSW has seen through bushfires, floods and the pandemic, apprentices remain a vital

part of the economy and make a strong contribution to local businesses and communities.

“The Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships are in addition to the 100,000 fee-free apprenticeships and 70,000 fee-free traineeships and other lowfee courses funded by the NSW Government,” Minister Henskens said.

NSW Government Savings Finder Program

A NEW cost of living advertising campaign offering a boost to every household and business budget has gone live, designed to raise awareness of the more than 70 ways to save across the NSW Government Savings Finder program.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said that since launching in 2017, the program had saved families around $5.8 billion, with Australian-

first vouchers, rebates and initiatives designed to find savings in every aspect of daily life.

“We know how hard it is for so many families in our community, which is why we are committed to easing the cost of living for all households,” Mr Perrottet said.

To date, there have been more than 97,000 appointments made with Savings Specialists, saving households an average of around $770.

“My message to local families is simple – do yourself a favour and give the Savings Finder program a go or book an appointment with a Savings Specialist.

“You could walk away with extra money in your pocket,” Mr Bromhead said.

Examples of the savings include the Creative Kids vouchers, in which 2,054,494 vouchers have been issues at a total of $205,459,400 and the Dine and Discover NSW vouchers, issued 31,761,426 times with a value of $794,037,000.

Other savings include Active Kids, First Lap, Parents NSW and Stay NSW amongst more than 70 other savings.

Record funds raised to protect Myall koalas

MYALL Koala and Environment Group (MKEG) volunteers raised record funds at this year’s annual Easter stall and raffle.

Organisers thanked all the locals and visitors who flocked to the stalls outside Hugo’s Newsagency in Hawks Nest to buy donated goods ranging from DVDs and books through bric-abrac and plants to a giant dog kennel.

“Our Easter stall was a wonderful success on a beautiful sunny day,” said Ian Morphett, secretary

of the Myall Koala and Environment Group.

“There were lots of people in town and our takings from sales, raffle tickets and donations were a record $2,784, compared to $1,787 before COVID. “The record was mostly due to increased raffle ticket prices, the ability to take EFTPOS and greatly increased donations.”

The raffle winners were Julie (with ticket 412) who chose a Strelitzia painting

by Hannah Matilda and Jacqui Bright donated by Galleries in the Gardens, another Julia (ticket 167)

who chose a stuffed koala donated by Marilyn Mercer.

Kate (ticket 025) won a sea eagle water colour painting.

MKEG raises funds to support numerous activities to protect the area’s endangered koalas, other wildlife and the local environment in general.

Ian added, “I must thank all our stall helpers and all those members who donated goods to sell on the stall.

“There was a wonderful array of items that contributed enormously to the success of the day.”

EACH year on Anzac Day, Australia and New Zealand commemorates the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on 25 April, 1915.

On that day thousands of young men far from their homes stormed the beaches of a peninsula in Turkey called Gallipoli.

March 18 1915, not April 25 1915, is the date celebrated in Turkey as the Day Of Victory in the Battle of Canakkale, also known to the Turks as the Invasion of

Gallipoli.

The other countries that played vital roles such as Britain, France and Germany do not celebrate or commemorate the Dardanelles campaign.

In the wider story of the First World War, the Gallipoli campaign made no large mark.

The number of dead, although horrific, pales in comparison to the death toll in France and Belgium during the war.

However for Australia, along with New Zealand and Turkey, the 1915 Gallipoli campaign is of special importance.

In 2015, for the 100 year anniversary of the Dardanelles campaign, Brian Jones, with help from friends from Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and North Arm Cove, recorded excerpts of soldiers' letters, diaries, official documents etc from British, German, Turkish and Australian sources.

“Put all together as an audio program, it gives a very humanistic viewpoint of the disastrous attempts of the Allied fleet to force the Dardanelles Straits in February 1915 and the slaughter at the Gallipoli landings on April 25,” Brian said.

“The program tells of the extraordinary courage, tenacity and initiative of the Anzacs landing at Anzac Cove.

“It pays tribute to the

British Forces desperate attempts to get a foothold at Cape Helles further south where their incredible bravery won them twelve Victoria crosses.

“One British Regiment adopting the motto ‘A Victoria Cross before breakfast’.

“Not overlooked is the Turks stubborn and courageous resistance to the invasion,” Brian said.

KARUAH has been announced by the NSW Tourism Industry Council as a finalist for the 2022 NSW Top Tourism Town Awards.

“The NSW Top Tourism Town Awards provide communities, business chambers, visitor centres and local governments the chance to show how their town encourages tourism development, increases visitation and drives the visitor economy for our state,” said NSW Tourism Industry

Council Executive Manager, Greg Binskin.

“It’s a real testament to the resilience of these towns that we have an incredible 30 finalists in three categories: those with populations over 5,000 residents, those under 5,000 residents and tiny towns with a population fewer than 1,500 residents.”

Karuah is contesting the ‘Top Tourism Town fewer than 1,500 residents’ category; competing with Bowraville, Broke, Carcoar, Huskisson,

Kangaroo Valley, Khancoban, Milparinka and Moulamein.

“These Awards are all about community and business collaboration coming together to showcase their town as a leading NSW tourism destination highlighting those special places, experiences, cultural attractions and the all-important locally produced food and beverages driving the visitor economy and delivering the social and economic outcomes for the community.

“The process was highly competitive with inspiring editorial, images and video content accompanied by a compelling itinerary essential to be a Top Tourism Town finalist,” Mr Binskin said.

“Once again, it is great to see such a strong response from NSW towns in engaging with the Top Tourism Town Awards.

“Regional towns are critical to achieving the State’s ambitions as a visitor destination and the

efforts these towns have made in support of their local economies, in the face of significant and ongoing challenges, is inspiring.

“The quality of entries and the depth of experience these towns offer, is a testament to their local businesses and communities,” said NSW Tourism Industry Council President, Simon Spellicy.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club TUESDAY 5 April: Finally, Round Two of the Open Consistency Competition was played, in all the games the winners started strongly and held their lead from start to finish.

Karen Green defeated Bev Rhodes 150 v 89. Lynne Green and Wendy Brand had bowled 16 ends when Wendy had to forfeit due to injury, the score at this point was Lynne 100 and Wendy 60.

A win to Robyn Beaumont 151 v Robyn Webster 99.

Lorraine Murphy 155 v Maureen Campbell 95 and a win also to Maynie Roberts 155 v Sheila Rattray 105.

Thanks to the Markers and Karen McPhie for umpiring.

Social bowls was a game of ‘turn around Singles’ and the winner was Dale Winter.

The raffle was won by Karen McPhie, thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

Thursday 7 April: Play did commence for Round Three of the Open consistency but unfortunately, the only winner today was the rain, games were abandoned due to the weather.

Tuesday 12 April: No social bowls played. Round 3 of the Open Consistency Competition had commenced on Thursday 7 April but was abandoned due to rain, play resumed today the scores carried through.

Lorraine Murphy v Karen McPhie, the score at the start of this game was Lorraine 67 v Karen 43. Lorraine continued in front for the next 6 ends but Karen gained 18 points over 2 ends resulting in an equal score of 85 all.

Then Karen hit the front for the next 4 ends then once again 'even steven' 110 all, 23 ends played.

These two were 'neck to neck' going into what would be their final end Lorraine 147, Karen 143 still anyone’s game. Karen scored a 6, (she needed 7 to win), Lorraine got 4

winning 151 v 149.

Another nail biter was contested on the next rink Karen Green v Robyn Beaumont, when play re-commenced here Robyn held a narrow lead, this continued for the first couple of ends then Karen started nudging ahead, after 22 ends Karen had a lead of 18 (119 v 101).

Robyn wasn’t giving up, over the next 7 ends she had reduced the difference in scores to just 2, Karen 146 v Robyn 144.

Unbelievable, they both scored 5 on the last end Karen declared the winner 151 v 149.

Bette Saillard held a strong lead against Judy McGavock all the way, Bette winning after 28 ends 150 v 130.

Maynie Roberts 51 and Lynne Green 49 when they resumed their match, Maynie came back with a vengeance after 5 ends she was 18 points ahead, the next 10 ends resulted in her being 30 points in front.

Lynne bowled well over the next 4 ends,

scoring a perfect score 10, on the second last end but ultimately losing 157 v 133. The winners progress to the semi final.

Karen McPhie won the raffle, thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the prize.

Thursday 14 April: The Semi Final of the Open Consistency Competition Bette Saillard v Maynie Roberts, sadly Bette had to forfeit due to unforeseen circumstances, Maynie proceeded through to the Final.

Karen Green v Lorraine Murphy, this contest lasted 26 ends, after 8 ends the score was 40 all, from then on Lorraine hit the front and never looked back winning 151 v 109.

The final Maynie Roberts v Lorraine Murphy to be played Tuesday 19th April.

Easter Sunday Service AS the sun rose majestically over Bennetts Beach on Sunday morning, a large crowd gathered for the Tea Gardens St Andrew’s Anglican Church’s Easter Sunday service.

Beginning at 6am, the early morning service was well attended by locals and

visiting tourists, with locals saying it was the biggest congregation seen for over ten years.

The service was conducted by Minister Rev John West, formerly of St Thomas' Anglican Church, Port Macquarie.

Perish the thought -- pun intended -- that someone would stoop so low as to take up the spare space in your bin with their inferior waste.

I'd call that a rubbish act, Brian, and a sad metaphor for the detritus of modern society in general.

What absolute rot that they are unable to limit their discarded items to the very substantial space allocated in their weekly red and fortnightly yellow bins.

Your neighbours sound like inconsiderate riff raff dumping on you in this way.

I would suggest that you take your bins down right before the arrival time of the rubbish collection service.

You may have to hide behind a bush for a few hours if the time is inconsistent, but it seems worth it to maintain your current level of ethical bin use.

There should be an award for people like you, Brian.

In fact there probably is. Keep up the good fight in your waste reduction efforts.

Thursday, 21 April 2022 NEWCASTLE Parkour hosted a youth parkour workshop at the Hawks Nest Community Hall in the first week of the school holidays to celebrate Youth Week.

The workshop focused on parkour based movements and techniques such as rolling, jumping, climbing and vaulting.

Alex from Newcastle Parkour said, "We are in the business of developing strong, resilient people both physically and mentally.”

Event Coordinator Brooke Feltis said, "It was fantastic to see local youth engage in such a fast-paced and fun-filled workshop.

“For most youth, this was their first experience of parkour.

“The workshop provided an opportunity to try a novel
