The Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is the Cancer Council’s biggest fundraising event for the year.

Big 4 River Myall is the temporary home for caravan and camper travellers, a stop on the road where they can base themselves as they explore the region or simply just stop for a rest.

The Double Vampire Tragedy

By Geoff WALKER ALL seemed calm and serene on the morning of Sunday May 14 in 1951 near Karuah as Tanilba's Faylie Cook and her father fished from their boat.

Suddenly, a Vampire jet dived from the sky above and crashed into the water.

So close was the impact that waves from the site actually rocked the boat.

A few seconds later another Vampire, although apparently trying to pull out of a dive, crashed into the tidal zone not far away.

Both pilots were killed.

Vampires were the first jet aircraft to serve with both the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

On the fateful day, two pairs of Vampires were engaged in cine-gun quarter attack training.

The filmed attacks would be later analysed back at RAAF Williamtown to see just how effective their efforts had been.

Each duo consisted of a qualified Vampire pilot and a trainee who was doing a conversion course from propeller powered Mustang fighters.

One of the trainee pilots reported that he was in a condition known as 'compressibility.'

This occurred when the jet went too fast and nose dived.

His leader instructed him to fare his dive brakes and throttle back.

It was of no use and he crashed into the water after a short and panicked radio message.

Meanwhile, hearing this drama unfold on the radio, the leader of the other two directed his student to regain formation.

This he tried to do but mistakenly followed the stricken aircraft believing that it was his leader.

THE Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association have formed a Sub-Committee seeking community support for the upgrading of the Tea Gardens Pool.

At a Progress Association meeting on 10 May 2021, Jim Meehan, Committee Member of Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, discussed ideas around a possible upgrade and redevelopment of the Tea Gardens Pool.

Mr Meehan believes this expression of interest may provide a solution to the ongoing issues surrounding the pool, including: lack of hot water in the showers, the required extensive cleaning and renovation of the amenities block, lack of disability access or accessibility as well as the evident need for a multifaceted aquatic centre .

The MidCoast council holds approximately $700,000 in Government funds and grants for work on the pool, specifically for disability access.

Mr Meehan believes that this aquatic centre will suit the needs of various sections of the community.

Tea Gardens Gets Ambulance Station Upgrade

By Marian SAMPSON TEA Gardens and Hawks Nest is a stunning place to live and to retire to.

The population of the region is older and the health needs for the region have grown over recent years.

Given these needs the State Government’s Minister for Health has announced an upgrade to Tea Gardens Ambulance Station.

told News Of The Area, “More and more people are choosing to retire in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, so we have to ensure that services not only keep pace with the growth but are capable of meeting the needs of the community.

“Our local paramedics have been doing their best with over-stretched and tired resources, but they can only do so much.

“Many local residents have come to me with shocking stories about ambulance delays, so I’ve been speaking with the health minister for some

time about the urgent need for local ambulance station upgrades.

“Any investment in local health infrastructure is always welcome, but most importantly, we need more ambulances and paramedics.

“Too often we’re relying on Newcastle ambulances to respond to local emergencies in Port Stephens.

“I desperately hope that the refurbished ambulance station includes more ambulances and paramedics so when locals need urgent medical assistance, they can get it,” she said.

“The cost benefit for this project is not a dollar valuation.

“It is about everything else in between; young children learning to swim, therapeutic classes for aging members of the community, tourism wants and needs.

He spoke of how the pool can become a major community place, to provide suitable solutions, meeting requirements for all.

Otherwise, if no one is aware of the agreement (that the Wills are Mutual Wills), then it is possible that if the agreement is breached that there is no recourse available to the aggrieved beneficiaries. If one or both of the spouses has been married previously and there are children from those previous marriages, then it follows that it may be important to both spouses to ensure that the survivor does not have the opportunity change the Will after the death of the first spouse.

Mirror Wills or Mutual Wills? Part 1 When a couple decides to each make a Will, it is not unusual for them to have a discussion and decide what will be the terms of the Wills. They may agree as to where the assets are to pass when the first of them dies and then when the second of them dies. If the couple agrees that when the first of them dies that the survivor will not change the terms of the Will, then the Wills are referred to as Mutual Wills.

The agreement between the couple that the Wills shall stand until the second of them dies is an enforceable agreement. If however, there is no such agreement and neither person is concerned if the survivor changes his or her Will after the first person dies, then the Wills are referred to as Mirror Wills. If the couple intends to make mutual Wills, then they should inform their lawyer of their intention and

Killing Of Dingoes Condemned

By Tara CAMPBELL IN March 2021, MidCoast Council culled five dingoes in the area after reports of the animals harassing residents and pets.

Mr Mark Pearson, NSW Upper House MP for the Animal Justice Party has spoken up about this issue in the NSW Parliament, condemning the MidCoast Council for their actions.

“Dingoes should not be punished with death because of the mistakes humans are making,” said Mr Pearson.

“People are moving further into dingo

habitat, foolishly trying to interact with them, and blaming them when they show aggression whilst defending themselves and their pups- a crime apparently punishable by death,” Mr Pearson said in his speech on 5 May. MidCoast Council senior ecologist, Mat Bell said, “We know that dingoes can, and should be allowed to live around the Hawks Nest area, but human interaction is what caused the dangerous change in this pack’s behaviour.”

Mr Pearson addressed the Parliament, citing dingoes similarity to dogs.

“Despite the similarities between dingoes and the dogs we share our homes with, dingoes are still gravely misunderstood by humans and that pun is intentional, because our misunderstanding is fatal to dingoes,” he said.

“People need to learn more about dingoes and how to appropriately interact with them.

“To do this we need to address the myth that dingoes are vicious attackers,” Mr Pearson said.

Dingoes are legally managed as ‘wild dogs’ in the applicable legislation, despite the dingoes’ occupancy in Australia for several thousands of years.

They are also the only Australian mammal not protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act. Mr Pearson has been campaigning for a ban of the usage of 1080 poison against dingoes, and for the animals to be protected under the Act.

Improving water quality on the Karuah River and the Port Stephens estuary A FREE field day is being held to showcase the impressive results of a joint project that is improving water quality on the Karuah River and the Port Stephens estuary.

Everyone’s welcome at a field day at The Branch, Karuah on Friday 21 May from 10am -1pm, kicking off with a walk on one of the participating properties followed by presentations by scientists involved in the project.

In 2020 eight farmers in The Branch undertook major works on their properties to protect wetlands and riparian vegetation while improving their water points, fencing and pasture.

One of the farmers involved will be opening their property to showcase their project and the improvements.

“We’re going to have scientists along to talk about what this project has done for the farmer’s property, and how it’s starting to improve the wetlands and the river,” says Drew Morris, MidCoast Council’s Catchment Officer.

“There will be a free barbecue showcasing some of the great local food from the catchment and river.

“A healthy environment produces healthy food - all these things are linked.

“Healthy wetlands and native vegetation

are essential for healthy rivers. Wetlands and vegetation corridors along riverbanks operate like the river’s kidneys, filtering out nutrients and sediment from the land, while also providing habitat for native species.

“Protecting the remaining wetlands and riparian corridors in The Branch is a key part of restoring the health of the Karuah River.”

The Karuah-Borland Landcare program is a partnership between local farmers, Midcoast Council, Hunter Local Land Services, Landcare Australia and Karuah Great Lakes Landcare.

Combining forces, the partnering agencies have contributed over $500,000 to this project which is being matched by eight landholders

through their own labour and cash contributions, to protect these vital habitats on their properties.

Altogether, over 270 hectares of wetlands and 50 hectares of riparian vegetation have been secured along The Branch and Karuah Rivers.

Breaking Down The Federal Budget

By Tara CAMPBELL ON Tuesday 11 May 2021, the Federal Government announced the 2021-22 Budget surrounding the title concept ‘Securing Australia’s Recovery’.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery for the government is more essential than ever.

The Federal Budget announcement includes tax relief in the form of additional tax cuts to more than ten million low and middle income earners seeing these earners benefit

by up to $1080 for individuals or $2160 for couples.

Simon Birmingham, Minister for Finance in the Morrison government said, “This is a Budget that keeps Australia safe from COVID, safe in their jobs, and safer throughout their lives.

“It’s a Budget framed against a global pandemic.”

Temporary full expensing and loss carry back measures announced in the 2020-21 budget will be extended for another year to support job creation.

The JobTrainer Fund will be doubled supporting 163,000 new training locations, whilst funding for more than 170,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships has been approved.

An Agri-Business Expansion Initiative has also seen an additional $87.7 million to help small businesses and farmers expand and diversify export markets.

POLICE are re-appealing for public assistance to locate a man missing from Pindimar.

Allan Bentley, aged 63, was reported missing to the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District on Thursday 29 April 2021; CCTV footage has confirmed he was last seen leaving his home on Pindimar Road, Pindimar, for work about 7.30am on Tuesday 27 April 2021.

Police have conducted extensive land and air searches – with the assistance of PolAir – however have not located Mr Bentley or his vehicle.

Police and friends are concerned for his welfare as he hasn’t attended several pre-arranged appointments which is out of character.

Allan is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 179cm tall, of medium build with short brown and grey hair and a beard.

It is believed he may be driving a white coloured Holden combo van, with NSW registration UQG-146, which has ‘catering’ written on the side.

He may also have power tools and firewood on board his vehicle.

He is known to frequent the Pindimar, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove, Hexham and Karuah areas for both work and personal purposes.

Documenting the disaster

MID North Coast NSW Emergency Situations, an independent information page (not associated with any emergency service) have created a platform in which locals can document the disastrous March 2021 flooding of the Mid North Coast.

Paul and his wife, Sarah are asking for local support.

“What we are hoping you can help us with, is the documentation of this event in the form of pictures and videos through the eyes of locals, not just what the media showed during the event,” they wrote on a Facebook post.

Choir returns THE Myall University of the Third Age (U3A) has had a very successful and wellsupported choir for many years, but in March last year choir activities were suspended along with all other U3A classes due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

When Covid-19 regulations started to ease in July, U3A members were able to restart most of their activities, but group singing remained banned until March this year.

Members are delighted to announce that the Choir has now restarted, following NSW Department

of Health guidelines.

The return to singing has come with some changes, said choir member Lee Clayton.

“We usually sing classical four-part harmony, but as our Musical Director who conducts this is currently not available, we are now singing a wide variety of less formal modern music,” she said.

Choir member Roger Digby has assembled a collection of well-known modern songs which are a delight and sometimes a challenge to sing.

Lee Clayton will soon be presenting some of her own songs for the choir to sing while being accompanied on her keyboard.

“We call the new style Music for Pleasure and the choir members certainly seem to be enjoying it,” Lee said.

“We meet every week at 2pm every Wednesday in the Hawks Nest Community Centre Main Hall.”

Myall U3A continues to welcome new members.

“Just come along and introduce yourself,” Lee said.

“This year, together with some members of the tennis club and the croquet members and guests Ella managed to raise almost $1000 for the hospital,” he said.

While the Cancer Council's Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’s official date is May 27 the club got in early and they

have donated the funds from this community event directly to the Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle where most of the people from the region who need treatment are admitted and cared for.

The Myall Park Croquet Club plays on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8.45am and visitors are welcome to come and learn about the game.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club Results

By Elizabeth BUCKPITT SO successful was the response to the recent invitation to visit our club to meet members, chat and enjoy light refreshments that bridge lessons given by Leslie Falla commenced on Thursday 13 May. The lessons comprise six face-to-face sessions with comprehensive notes and ample question time, followed by six sessions where a mentor is allocated

to each table whilst students practice playing what they have learnt.

All followed up with the opportunity for further support by members whilst playing at Hawks Nest Bridge Club.

The next few months can be especially interesting, exciting and challenging when we see some of our Bridge players participating in State Championships over the coming months as has happened in the past.

Sand Transfer System operating THE Jimmys Beach Sand Transfer System will be used to create a sand buffer along the beach, in preparation for winter weather events.

MidCoast Council contractors CCB Envico will be running the renourishment program and expect to start pumping from this Thursday 20 May. The Sand Transfer System uses pumps to take sand from the stockpile at Winda Woppa and distribute it on the most vulnerable part of the beachfront.

Jimmys Beach is one of 12 identified coastal erosion hotspots in NSW and previous sand renourishment programs have proven successful in limiting the level of erosion from storms.

Council says the system is not designed to stop the erosion, but to provide a sacrificial sand buffer along The Boulevard.

“We have a beach management program in place for Jimmys Beach and it uses a combination of operations for sand replenishment, with trucks and excavators as well as the sand transfer system,” explained Rob

Scott, Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering.

“Every year we work to provide sand buffers along the pinch point in preparation for east coast lows that severely impact our beaches in winter.

“Thanks to an extensive dredging operation of the eastern channel of the Myall River last year, we have a great stockpile at Winda Woppa to work with, allowing us to make the most of the sand transfer system for our first major sand transfer campaign since the system was commissioned.”

Mr Scott added, “It’s been a tough 12 months for Jimmys Beach with more storms than usual throughout summer which is usually when the beach has a chance to replenish itself.”

Since the pandemic, our workplace has continued to work from home, and

AS property owners, we don’t own the land that constitutes our nature strip, yet Councils expect us to care for and maintain it. Additionally, if there are existing trees or shrubbery we can’t cut/remove them – they’re Council assets and Council’sresponsibility – consequently nature strips have become a bit of a grey area. Nature strips have practical functions, predominantly ensuring clear sight lines for pedestrians and traffic, but that doesn’t mean we’re all consigned to maintaining wastelands.

Rules vary between Councils regarding what can be done. Some Councils prevent any plantings, others are more flexible but have strict guidelines. Still other Councils have fully embraced residents’ requests to plant vegetable gardens, or small shrubs/flowering plants with spectacular results: reducingtraffic pollution, creating shade, thereby reducing that hideous bare asphalt heat, reducing run-off and providing welcome safe havens for insects and birds. And one of the best results? The improvements in human health and wellbeing by providing not only an aesthetically pleasing vision but a means for the community to connect and engage. Start with the Council’s website, check their guidelines and go from there. Here’s to planting success!

Australian Pines and Products (APP) DEAR News Of The Area,

AS a journalist working with John Fairfax (first the Sydney Sun 1971, then the National Times (1972-75), I was heavily involved in a private capacity assisting the failed investors in this company who had formed the Australian Pines and Products Acreholders Defence Association.

Radiata pine plantations in Forests 1-9 covering 19,000-22,000 acres had repeatedly failed to produce a dividend because of poor growth, fires and mismanagement.

The investors were middle/upper class persons especially from professional ranks who had invested $300-$1,500 per acre interest, being promised a first dividend when the trees were thinned after three years; then a final dividend when the trees were logged after a further eight years; and, they were promised Torrens Title to each acre allotment they invested in.

None of that ever occurred, and I dropped my involvement or interest when I went to work for Neville Wran in the six months prior to his 1976 State election victory of May 1976.

I held the controlling proxy share in Coastal Forests Limited, and David Patten, a former head of the Crimes Commission, later district court judge, and a former State president of the NSW Liberal Party, would hold the controlling proxy share in Bundabah Forests Limited.

When I left my association with the investors, it was my understanding an approach would be made to the State Attorney-General seeking exemption of stamp duty on the new share issues.

I notice Australian Pines and Products is still a registered corporation, re-listing in the early 2000s.

The land in question was never suited to forestry, and was originally granted to the Australian Agricultural Company for the establishment of McCarthurs Merino sheep industry.

They wrote to London complaining sheep were waterlogged creating footrot, and subsequently were issued a new land grant on the Liverpool Plains (Camden).

I'm seeking answers to the following questions, and feel free to pass my email on to your members or others who might know the answers: 1. What happened to the ownership of the various forests, from memory numbered 1-9, including a proposed capital city of Australia at Pindimar (sic)?

2. Which local government body or bodies controls the forest sites, and was any planning approval ever given to carve off and sell bits and pieces?

3. Did the NSW Public Trustee ever become involved in a solution for the failed investors, and does a former executive from the Public Trustee's office reside in the area of interest?

4. Has a Chinese billionaire charged in Newcastle court for environmental breeches hold any of the lands once owned by Australian Pines and Products?

5. In the last 50 years, has anyone written a book, or contributed to a book/ pamphlet, to the history of the forests?

Dear Tina, I CAN totally understand the temptation to work in your pyjamas.

In 10-degree weather, who wouldn't

want to be rugged up in their Oodie, bunny slippers and beanie.

Now many of us are still working

from home, we are also paying for it with

our power bills, so swanning around in something cosy makes sense.

The only problem I can see is that

we should dress for the job we aspire to, not the job we are in. If you wear your pyjamas when working from home, you could subconsciously be paving the way for a slack attitude to your workday.

This week it may just be pyjamas,

but by next week you will probably have

moved from your desk to the lounge and put on the midday movie.

In a month's time you could potentially

have given up on work altogether, instead eating ice cream and fudge sauce straight from the tub, wearing a mud mask and

making nostalgic Spotify playlists instead

of fulfilling your role as a procurement officer.

It may go unnoticed for a while, but

ON Saturday May 15, the Karuah Rooettes travelled down to Dora Creek while their male counterparts,the Roos, played at home against Clarence Town.

The Rooettes game was cut short after just 9 minutes when a Dora Creek player suffered a compound fracture of the leg.

The Rooettes’ Chloe Zdebski had scored in the early minutes to take the score 4-0.

In the men’s game, the Roos held a minute's silence before kickoff to pay their respects to Kevin Johnson.

ON Monday 3 May, the first round of the PSSA Soccer was held at the Jack Ireland Oval, with Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) playing against Pacific Palms Public School.

BCS had both a boy’s and girl’s team who competed on the day.

“In hot conditions our teams gave their best,” said Debbie Booth, Deputy Principal Learning and Support, Bulahdelah Central School.

“Unfortunately, our boys were defeated 5-1, a score which could have been much higher except for some excellent defence and goalkeeping.

“The girl’s side were defeated 8-0, an excellent effort considering many of the girls were playing in their inaugural game.

“The way our students displayed good sportsperson ship (sic) made the teachers and parents watching very proud of these students.

“Many thanks to Rhys Dawes for erecting the soccer nets and manning the canteen, and Jackie O’Connell and her husband for marking the field and Danielle Davy for organising the match. A great team effort!” she said.

A break in the wet weather allows for a return to the bowling green

12 MAY: Well, it might be the spate of wet weather, or it might be the change in format keeping bowlers away, but that’s about to change as today we saw a reversal to three-bowl Triples with 38 players participating.

The grass played well considering that we had 25mm of rain the day before a great credit to our

greenkeeper Peter.

The winners on a 2-end count-back with 16 points were Gary Wynne, Paul Carter and Col Fossey.

The lucky losers on 17 points were John Payne, John Moore and Mark Hair.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Gary Porter.

A big weekend for Pennant players with most grades finalising Round 10 of the Newcastle District pennants and then backing up tomorrow to play games previously washed out.

Grade 4 played Beresfield at home just sneaking home by 5 shots 8.5 to 1.5 and 6762.

Grades 5 and 6 travelled together to Nelson Bay with Grade 5 recording their

first win of the season 9.5 to 0.5 and 70-61 and Grade 6 narrowly going down, by 3 shots, to the competition leaders 1-9 and 62-65.

Grade 7 did not play having to provide some reserves for the other teams.

16 May In the catch-up rounds played today Grade 4 had another close game against Raymond Terrace winning 9-1 and 60-57.

Stockton won the points 5.5-4.5.

These weekend results will see grades 5, 6 and 7 bow out for the season but there may be required to play another game next week if deemed necessary to determine future gradings.
