Bushfire Technology Pilots Program

THE Bushfire Technology Pilots Program has been accelerated in hopes of accelerating trials of innovative technology.

After the devastating fires in 201920 deemed ‘Black Summer’, New South Wales was severely impacted, with horrific damage in the MidCoast and Port Stephens regions.

To enhance bushfire operations and management, the NSW Government has announced a $1.5 million program, with the provision of grants of up to $100,000 to support trials and pilots of field-ready bushfire technology developed by NSW businesses.

“We want to harness our state’s excellence in cutting-edge research and make NSW a global leader in bushfire research and development.

“This program is about strengthening planning, preparation and response to bushfire threats, so that the NSW firefighting services continue to be a leader in this space,” Mr Henskens said.

This is the first initiative to be rolled out under the NSW Bushfire Response R&D Mission, part of the NSW Action plan.

The HBOC visits Broughton Island quarterly with the visits typically lasting for three days.

Members of the general public can get to Broughton Island on a day trip from Nelson Bay by commercial vessels and they can also camp on the island by making a booking with NPWS and arranging a boat transfer.

Anyone can join HBOC and the group offers a range of activities to suit all tastes – casual bird watching excursions, campouts, regular surveys of bird hotspots, bird photography, kids programs and club nights with guest speakers.

December 2021 to 10 January 2022, the Government website had a fault, with the e-petition losing all signatures recorded in that time period.

Kathy Poldmaa, administrator of Facebook group Hawks Nest Development spoke to News Of The Area regarding the petition.

“I apologise to those who tried to sign, but if you could take the time to sign again and inform friends so we can get these signatures up.

“At present we are at 3,494,” Ms Poldmaa said.

The petition follows legal advice received by the

community after the ABC Four Corners program ‘Obeid Inc’ in November, which brought to light questions about the rezoning of the beachside land at Hawks Nest.

Petitioner Stuart Coppock told News Of The Area that the community deserves a clear direction by the Minister.

“The NSW Parliament has given the Planning and Environmental Legislation a clear discretionary right to the Minister to direct a Local Government Council to zone land in a particular way.

“The e-petition to the NSW Parliament has one purpose - if the requisite number of people (20,000) sign it will make the Minister explain to the Parliament why

he will not give a direction to return the Sanderling site to its previous zoning, or to say the direction that will be given,” Mr Coppock said.

The petition is currently at seventeen percent of the required level to be debated in Parliament.

“The petition is the most direct means the public has to make the Minister and the Government accountable on this issue,” Mr Coppock said.

Mr Coppock also says that the petition is the only means to have the NSW Planning bureaucracy intervene in the issue “As we reach higher numbers of signatures, the NSW Planning bureaucracy can intervene in the issue and advise the Minister following a possible debate

A PARTNERSHIP between local artists and environmentalists has been hailed a success, despite COVID restrictions.

For the first time in its five years, the annual Summer Cooler exhibition by the members of Galleries in the Gardens (GIG) was sponsored by the Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG).

This was the gallery’s first Summer Cooler to award cash prizes given by a sponsor.

The environment group provided prizes for a painting and for a ceramic sculpture in this year’s competition, on the theme of ‘A Celebration of Nature around the Myall’. q Emilie Tseronis, President of Galleries in the Gardens, Richard Streamer, Anne Stuart, acting GIG vice-president and President of the Myall Koala and Environment Group, Gail Rust, Ceramic prize head of curatorial, read out a message from the winner, Bev Struik, Painting prize winner, Anne Stuart, acting GIG vice-president, and competition judge Mel Redcliffe, a practicing Sue Matheson, standing in for David Matheson who worked on the ceramic with Gail. artist exhibiting throughout Newcastle and the Central Coast, who was unable to attend MKEG publicist Adrienne Ingram said the Gardens on Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, till the evening.

The president of MKEG, Richard Streamer, handed over the winners’ cheques totalling $600 and said the collaboration’s major value was having the environment front-and-centre in the minds of residents and summer visitors, through the intermediary of the gallery and the art on display.

“It promotes greater awareness of our wonderful environment, the threats to it and how people can do something practical through engagement with MKEG and our work,” he said. q

Beaches Closed Following Volcanic Eruption

BEACHES across the east coast of Australia, including those in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast, were closed and on high alert all day Sunday, following the dramatic eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai undersea volcano near Tonga.

The volcanic event, at 3:10pm AEDT on 15 January, followed a number of smaller eruptions last week, putting both pacificisland communities and many pacific rim countries, including Australia, under warning of tsunami activity.

A tsunami threat to the marine environment was issued by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 8:45pm AEDT15 January.

Whilst there was no immediate concern for significant land inundation along the regions coastline and evacuation orders were

not required, the eruption generated a high risk of dangerous rips, larger waves and strong currents.

Despite the eruption occurring over 3,500 km from our shore, the combined magnitude and the limited understanding of the impact of volcanic events on tides, made it necessary to issue the marine threat alert.

The offshore islands of Lord Howe and Norfolk Island were issued higher alerts and experienced some increased wave activity of over 1m.

MidCoast Council issued the following statement on Sunday morning.

“All MidCoast beaches are CLOSED today, Sunday 16 January, due to a marine threat warning.

“This closure will be in place for a number of hours after the warning is lifted.

“It includes all beaches, rockpools and areas in the estuaries close to the coast.

Please stay safe and do

not go into the water today.

“The Bureau of Meteorology continues to monitor the tsunami event after a volcanic eruption near Tonga and will provide updates during the day.”

Port Stephens surf life savers responded to the warning that resulted in beach closures along the coast.

Speaking to News Of The Area, Glen Dunkley, Duty Officer, Hunter Surf Lifesaving said, “The Surf Life saving response covered the patrolled beaches at Fingal,

DUE to the steady increase in COVID-19 cases across the Myall Coast, the Tea Gardens Lions Club has made the difficult decision to cancel the Australia Day Breakfast BBQ scheduled at Moira Parade Reserve on 26 January 2022.

Tea Gardens Lions Club President Peter Webb stated, “We acknowledge this decision will be disappointing for locals but one of our key priorities is the safety, health and wellbeing of our community. Please celebrate this Australia Day safely.

“The Lions Club will continue to support smaller events such as the Myall

Birubi and One Mile, as well as providing presence at other unpatrolled beaches around Port Stephens.

“Our key message is that the beach-using public should always follow directives to stay out of the water until such time as a warning is lifted.”

Despite large crowds attending the beaches in the area, the large majority did remain out of the water.

With the cancellation of the tsunami marine warning late on Sunday night, MidCoast beaches

were reopened on Monday, however beach visitors were advised to take care.

With a hazardous surf warning in place, beach visitors were advised to follow the advice and direction of Surf Life Saving personnel on patrolled beach

Community halls to be upgraded IN great news for the community, MidCoast Council is underway with upgrades to 50 community halls across the region as part of a major improvement program.

Council has invested $1.2 million of Australian Government funding into the program, with works such as electrical upgrades, improvements to water supplies, installation of generators and rainwater tanks and construction of better facilities such as toilet blocks and storage sheds starting soon.

National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens residents are being encouraged to comment on the draft National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032.

Liberal candidate for Paterson, Brooke Vitnell, is urging locals to provide feedback.

“Domestic and family violence is our nation's shame “The draft National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 20222032 outlines a shared long-term commitment to a future free from all forms of gender-based violence in Australia built on four pillars: Prevention, Intervention, Response and Recovery,” Ms Vitnell said.

Based on the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the Port

Stephens Local Government Area was in the worst 50 Local Government Areas for reports of Domestic Violence and Abuse, with a shocking 373 reported incidents in the 2020-21 period.

Ms Vitnell encourages everyone across the Port Stephens community – including people with lived experience of violence, family safety advocates, service providers, researchers, organisations, and the public – to have their say on the next National Plan.

“Over the past two years, with isolation and social distancing from COVID-19 comes many vulnerable people in our community forced into close confines with their domestic violence perpetrators.

“In times of crisis and natural disasters, there is always a documented rise in domestic abuse.

“Port Stephens, have your say, please participate in this survey so that national policy tailored to the needs of our community can be created,” Ms Vitnell said.

Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, Minister for Women’s Safety announced that the Morrison Government will invest $1 million to ensure ongoing engagement with victim-survivors throughout the life of the next National Plan in support of the foundation principle.

“We must recognise how race, age, disability, culture, gender, including gender identity, sexuality amongst others forms of identity, intersect and impact on this lived experience.

“To succeed we must listen, engage and be informed by diverse lived experiences which is why we are committed to ongoing engagement with victim-

Countdown on as NSW Country Championships approaches SURF Life Saving clubs from regional NSW are finalising their training with the 2022 Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships just around the corner, set to run from January 28-30 at the idyllic Cape Hawke SLSC on the

state’s Lower North Coast.

Running for the first time since 2020 after COVID-19 unfortunately brought about the cancellation of last year's event, clubs outside the Newcastle-to-Illawarra will

converge on Cape Hawke on the last weekend in January to compete across a variety of surf sport events.

in size, with well in excess of 1,000 competitors, 200 officials and around 4,000 spectators expected across the three days of competition.

Speaking at the official launch at Cape Hawke SLSC this morning, Surf Life Saving NSW Director of Surf Sports, Don van Keimpema OAM believed the excitement for the reintroduction of the event – the first time regionalbased clubs have had a chance to compete at an event of this size in two years – was palpable.

“It’s a fantastic time of year – summer is well and truly here,” he said.

“The Oakberry Acai Country Championships is an important showcase for our regional members to compete, there are so many friendly rivalries between clubs but the really special thing is that it’s done in such a safe and fun way.

“We are excited to be at Cape Hawke this year, it’s a tremendous location that’s quite central in terms of being accessible to our competing clubs, from Broulee Surfers in the south all the way up to Cudgen Headland in the north.

“It’s been two years since the last one at Cudgen Headland who hosted backto-back years and I know they’re eager to defend their title, they’re sending a large contingent down.

“We’re also looking forward to seeing the team from Warilla Barrick Point

who have been working towards a plan for a number of years to take the title – it will be interesting to see the strides they have made towards that goal.

In 2022, an extended schedule will see competition run over three days instead of two, meaning a greater breadth of carnival competition across all age groups.

“One of the main additions this year is the Short Course Surf Boat Championship in addition to the traditional Long Course, which is just one example of how there will be more to play for this year,” Don added.

Surf Life Saving NSW has worked tirelessly with Cape Hawke SLSC, Lower North Coast Branch and Midcoast Council to ensure the Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships are COVID-safe for competitors, officials and spectators alike.

“We are leaving nothing to chance this year in ensuring that we will be compliant with the existing health orders,” Surf Life Saving NSW Chief Operating Officer, Phil Ayres said.

“We will be recommending teams, when in tents or in close

proximity, use face masks, and there will be ample supplies of sanitiser available for participants and attendees.

“For officials, they will be required to take a Rapid Antigen Test each morning prior to coming on-site, and all briefings and gatherings will be outdoors.

“Importantly, there are also contingency plans in place should any key personnel develop symptoms during the event, with deputies on hand to replace them in the lead up or during competition."

Midcoast Council Mayor, Claire Pontin said there is a lot of excitement around hosting and looks forward to seeing thousands of people enjoying everything the region has to offer.

“We are proud to support Surf Life Saving events and I am proud our region will play host to the 2022 championships,” she said.

“We welcome competitors and spectators to our beautiful region, to both compete and enjoy their time here on the Barrington Coast.

“We urge the local community to get behind this event and wish the organisers and the competitors well for the weekend.”

Dunshea family say goodbye to the area

HAWKS Nest locals Bruce and Irene Dunshea are saying goodbye to the area.

After almost 48 years dedicated to Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens and Pindimar, Bruce and Irene are looking forward to their next chapter.

On 3 March 1974, Bruce Dunshea arrived in

Hawks Nest for six weeks’ work with mining company Mineral Deposits, before he was offered a twelve-month contract.

It was at this point when Irene, Sheree and Paul joined Bruce in the area.

With no availability of houses to rent, Bruce and the family settled into Hawks Nest Caravan Park.

Bruce graded the mining road from the depot in Hawks Nest to the Seal Rocks turn off for the next eighteen years.

The family then built a home in Binda St, Hawks Nest where they lived for 28 years before moving to their Pindimar property where they lived for just under twenty years.

Marine Rescue Port Stephens On 12 January at approximately 3PM the Marine Rescue Port Stephens Radio Base received a request

for assistance from a 4M open runabout who was having engine issues just 1KM north of the Myall River camp site.

Watch Officer Robert and MRO Adrian recorded all the information required and passed it onto the (DCO) Julian. Julian communicated with Mick (Duty Skipper) and the crew were assembled down at the dock getting PS30 ready for her trip up the Myall River.

With one adult and one child on board skipper Mick wasted no time and headed towards the distressed vessel.

Once on scene crew Anthony and Howard with quick line work, they soon had the DV under tow.

Mick set a course to Tea Gardens boat ramp and once there he delivered the vessel safely to shore.

Toxic Mushrooms Due to recent rain, mushrooms are again popping up in all sorts of places.

NSW Poisons Information Centre advises caregivers and parents to supervise children closely when they are playing outside or visiting parks and playgrounds.

“If you notice mushrooms growing in your garden at home, remove them before young children find them.

“Do not pick or eat wild mushrooms. Australia is home to many poisonous mushrooms and they sometimes look very similar to other edible varieties. It just isn’t worth the risk.”

Always call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice if anyone has eaten wild mushrooms.

Increase in Accidents Throughout the past two weeks, NSW RFS – North Arm Cove Brigade were called to a number of accidents in the Myall Lakes area.

“With the increase of traffic on the roads comes an increase in motor vehicle accidents.

“Thankfully all occupants from recent crashes have been injury free and just a bit shaken,” the Brigade said.

“You got to know everyone by first name; it was a very friendly village with not many shops but just enough,” Irene told News Of The Area.

Since then, there have been several large changes to the area: the opening of the Singing Bridge, new shopping centres, medical centres, service stations, clubs and council offices.

Bruce also worked for AMP putting in many airstrips for crop dusting, Great Lakes Council, many private clients and he also had his own ventures - land subdivisions at Limekilns, Tea Gardens Green and the Lakes Estate also known locally as ‘Dunshea’s estate’ by some and Wattly Hill Estate, north of Bulahdelah.

He worked on approximately 250 blocks in total.

“It was a big decision to leave the area, but whilst we have our health, we’ve decided to pack up the caravan and venture around Australia - when borders allow of course,” Irene said.

‘In the meantime, we will live at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast where we’ve owned a unit for twenty years.”

On 12 November 2021, Bruce and Irene celebrated 55 years of marriage with

“We were very appreciative of such a beautiful evening organised by our son Paul and his wife Natalia.”

The following day they said farewell to many friends and family with a sausage sizzle at Providence Bay Park.

“On behalf of Bruce and myself, we want to say a big thank you to all the wonderful

people we’ve met over the years. “We will miss everyone - friendship is priceless,” Irene said.

Once the Pindimar home was sold, the couple stayed for a while where it all started - Hawks Nest Caravan Park before heading north on their new adventures.

The Dunshea family hope to return from time to time and will never forget all the good times shared in the area.

Free skateboarding workshops TOTEM Skateboarding has partnered with MidCoast Council to run their popular Learn to Skate Workshops, for children ages six years and over, at skateparks across the Myall Coast.

Keen skaters can attend a workshop at Stroud Skatepark on Friday 21 January 2022 from 2-5pm or at Tea Gardens Skatepark on Sunday January 23 from 9am-12pm. Organisers say the workshops are open to skaters of all abilities.

“We believe in having a go, so students are encouraged to go at their own pace under the guidance of our coaches,” said a Totem Skateboarding spokesperson.

Police to record Indigenous status

ARRESTING officers will now ask all people-of-interest and victims of crime if they are Indigenous in a new policy change by NSW Police.

The NSW Police Force has introduced these changes to help improve data and create a fairer justice system.

Introduced on Thursday 13 January, it is now mandatory for police to ask all victims and people-ofinterest if they identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres

Strait Islander and record the status in the police system WebCOPs. Corporate Sponsor for Aboriginal Engagement, Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar, said the changes to recording will improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people under the National Close the Gap Agreement.

“The mandate was introduced to improve the recording of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status in the NSW Police system.

“Asking allows us to improve safe custody practices, refer vulnerable people to support services and divert them from the criminal justice system,” said AC Cassar.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Indigenous people make up 27 percent of the average daily prisoner cohort in NSW, however, only make up about 3 percent of the general population.

In 2020, the state government knocked back

After a horror year in 2020 where pubs and clubs lost over $1 billion in beer sales due to lockdowns and other restrictions these latest figures from the ATO show that losses for 2021 could well exceed this.

The ATO recorded 903,982 litres of alcohol as having been served in beers over the counter in July-September 2021 compared to 1,993,027 litres during the same period in 2019.

John Preston, Chief Executive of the Brewers Association of Australia, said, “These figures show that the damage to our pubs and clubs from the pandemic actually worsened last year.

“On average beer sales are around 70 percent of alcohol sales volumes in licensed premises and a drop of this severity has hit pubs and clubs incredibly hard.

“We are calling for the Federal Government to use the forthcoming Federal Budget to reduce Australia’s fourth highest beer tax in the world to give pubs and clubs a fighting chance.

“We are very concerned that on 1 February the Australian Government will hit Australian beer drinkers with one of the biggest beer tax increases in more than a decade – it’s not right and it’s not sustainable.

“Other countries have been reducing their tax on draught beer to give pubs and beer drinkers a break.”

However, the latest measure of the downturn is a rather interesting one.

Community and kind-hearted people are the style du jour in this heartwarming British series. Based on the novels of James Herriott about a young vet in the 1930s working in the Yorkshire Dales, the books are so popular that they have been in print since their debut in the 1970s. In “You’ve Got to Dream”, Herriott discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners. Featuring cute animals, idyllic scenery, and lighthearted stories, its well-timed fare.

The haka is New Zealand’s hugely respected and powerful war dance often performed as a pre-game ceremony at sporting matches.

It is electric, symbolic and a force to be reckoned with.

Since 2012, a group of Indigenous Australian NRL players have been developing their own response to the haka that includes movements that reflect cultural symbols – the clan, the warrior and the spear. In this documentary, we follow the players as they try to convince high-profile players to join in so the dance can be performed at The Vigil, the Survival Day ceremony held at the Barangaroo headland.

Hawks look to 2022 THE Hawks, having endured a horror season in 2021, are looking to a positive start to this year’s competition.

Brenden Robinson, who mentored the younger players last year, has been appointed as Coach.

He is supported by a strong Committee, and a squad of willing players.

All Club sponsors have remained on board in 2022.

The Hawks will kick off the season in March with a trial game against Abermain.

Training has started, with midweek fitness sessions, which will continue until February.

The Lady Hawks are also keen to improve on their 2021 season.

A number of players have

indicated that they will back up this year.

The Club is seeking expressions of interest to Coach the Ladies.

Both teams also require additional sports trainers, league safe staff, and

Any costs toward accreditations for the positions will be met by the Club.

The Myall River Juniors hope to field teams in the 2022 season.

There are plans to field a 17’s, 14’s, 9’s, and possibly a 12’s side.

An expression of interest day will be held in early February.

These teams will also need a number of support staff. The season is expected to kick off in late March The spectre of COVID will be a factor this year, with the NSWRL to set down protocol’s for competitions this week.

Register your positive Covid test ANYONE who tests positive using a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) will now be required to register their result with Service NSW. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the new registration process was an important part of managing the pandemic.

“NSW residents can register their result with just a few clicks on the Service NSW website or by using

the Service NSW app,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Registering your RAT result enables NSW Health to provide you with advice on self-isolation and managing COVID-19 symptoms at home, to connect high risk people to clinical care services and to help inform the ongoing public health response.”

Most people do not need a PCR test to confirm they are positive for COVID-19.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the reporting of a positive RAT will be required under a public health order.

“Ensuring individuals are connected to the appropriate public health advice and keeping a watch on trends is the prime purpose,” Mr Hazzard said.

ALTHOUGH it may be January, the Christmas good news is still flowing in, with Port Stephens-Hunter Police District providing an update on their Christmas drive for the elderly.

Port Stephens-Hunter Police District Aged Crime Prevention Officer Senior Constable Wilcox delivered 50 individual gifts and three large hampers with a range of gifts enclosed to elderly residents across Port Stephens who may have been spending Christmas alone due to restrictions and caution,

"This was such a rewarding part of my job.

“The appreciation received by the residents and staff at the Aged Care facilities I visited was so amazing.

“I could not have done this without the very generous staff at Port Stephens-Hunter Police District who dug deep to help me make this happen,” Senior Constable Wilcox said.

Gifts ranged from boxes of chocolate, jigsaw puzzles, crossword and puzzle books, stuffed animals, clothing, and dolls to suit individual residents.

Hottest Seven Years On Record

IF you think you have been sweating more as climate change progresses, you may be right.

The last seven years have been the hottest ever recorded, according to data from the European Union's (EU) satellite system.

Climate science warns that as the planet warms, we are more likely to see

increasingly frequent and intense heat waves, bushfires, droughts and other extreme weather related disasters, with devastating impacts on human health, ecosystems, biodiversity and the economy.

It’s not just species like koalas that are impacted by the rising temperatures.

Doctors for the Environment Chair, Dr John

Van Der Kallen, said, “Doctors are seeing the effects of heat on their patients in their surgeries and emergency departments.

“Higher temperatures result in deaths, and a variety of illnesses – including worsening heart conditions, mental health conditions, and pregnancy complications.

“Further rises in temperature will have devastating consequences for the health of our families and communities.

Fish Frame Research

q A Mulloway caught during a charter on Pacific Blue Charters based at Nelson Bay - there wasn’t enough room on the deck to get a shot of the whole fish!

THE Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are calling on anglers to donate their fish frames.

The fish frames from recreational fishers are required to help with the monitoring of Mulloway, Yellowtail Kingfish, Snapper, Dusky Flathead, Blue Spotted Flathead, Pearl Perch Spanish or Spotted Mackerel.

A DPI spokesperson stated, “We don't just want huge trophy fish, the little ones are just as important as the big ones.

“All legal length frames are wanted and will help with this important work.

“Data collected by this program will contribute toward ensuring continued

He believes the Federal Government must turn its attention to rapidly reducing emissions to address climate change as a matter of urgency.

Dr Dean Miller, MD, Great Barrier Reef Legacy, said, “Climate change is driving hotter temperatures, as the reporting from the EU satellite system released today shows.

“This leads to higher marine temperatures and more frequent and intense

quality recreational fishing opportunities for your favourite species into the future.”

The earbones (otoliths) are used to determine the age of the fish.

Age data is used to build a picture of the age structure of the species population.

This combined data details how many fish there are of each age in the stock, which helps evaluate the health of the species.

By collecting this data over time DPI can also see how the structure of fish populations in NSW may be changing.

For those that send in their fish frames, DPI will send them a certificate with the age of the fish and an image of the fish's ear-bone and the anglers will go into a monthly prize draw.

Shake Up For Oyster Industry

THE oyster industry is about to see a shake up with new technology being employed which will allow oyster shells to be marked with an identifying food grade marker outlining details of the oysters origin.

Furthermore the markers can be used to identify organic oysters.

The SMX food, beverage and alcohol department which deals with seeds, animal feed, and wines and spirits has expanded its operations into superfoods by securing the

origination and brand efficacy of organic oysters.

The food grade marker has been successfully applied to live oysters and is able to be read through plastic liner packaging.

This marking system is not affected by refrigerated environments, logistics and transport conditions and procedures that are typical to the industry and sustained through the shelf life of the oysters.

SMX’s digital blockchain platform can provide information on the oyster shell which can detect and

read its origin precisely in real time at any point along the value chain, without destroying the product.

FRIDAY last, at long last, saw the end of the 2021 championships on the Karuah green.

The Karuah Ladies Club conducted the finals of their Ladies Consistency competition and the Ladies Major Singles competitions.

“COVID and green delays, bad weather on key days and an extremely compressed schedule had made the 2021 year extend well into 2022,” Ladies President Kay Freeman said.

The consistency singles format is a very popular competition amongst Karuah lady bowlers.

It requires a very pure form of the game with points only available to the player who can consistently draw bowls to a set jack (balanced

on a marker and returned there, should it be moved).

Christine Davies, arguably the most consistent Karuah lady bowler, having won each of the consistency competitions since 2016 said, “This year's final against Helen Higgins was particularly tough as Helen is a very strong draw bowler and the day was oppressively hot so I was quite relieved to come out with a win.”

The Ladies Major Singles, held on the same day, was an absolute treat for the spectators on hand with some quality bowling and fierce but friendly competition on display.

On that extremely hot day the format saw unlimited ends with the first bowler to reach 25 shots being declared the winner. In a very close game, both bowlers were exploiting their areas of strength and the game went to some 38 ends making it a real endurance marathon.

“By the end, both Kay and I were extremely hot and weary but the standard of bowling was invigorating and

Neither the Race Committee nor Ichi Ban could reach Celestial for a period of 90 minutes, at which time Ichi Ban had launched a red parachute flare at the request of the Race Committee to alert Celestial.

It was at this time Celestial contacted Ichi Ban on VHF Channel 16 and informed them of the incidental activation and guaranteed wellbeing of all crew.

After an International Jury heard the protest and deliberated on the case well into the night, it was noted that Celestial was to receive

a 40-minute penalty in lieu of disqualification for breaching rules which inconvenienced AMSA, the Race Committee and other competitors. Ichi Ban was to receive a 3-minute redress for their assistance at the time. This protest decided the race outcome, with Ichi Ban receiving their third overall SydneyHobart win and claiming the Tattersall Cup. Smuggler finished sixth overall, and second in division one behind Celestial.

Congratulations to Steve and the crew of Smuggler for an eventful and challenging race, resulting in great results.

Huthnance’s to celebrate sixty years WELL-KNOWN local couple, Elaine and Bart Huthnance of Gams Road, Tea Gardens, are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

From their marriage on 3 February 1962, Elaine and Bart resided in Kurri Kurri where they raised their family and participated in several community groups over the years including leadership positions in Guides, Scouts, Venturers, the Kurri Kurri High School School Canteen and the Army Reserve.

Elaine worked in the family grocery business and Bart worked for the Commonwealth Bank in various roles and branches in the Hunter Valley.

In 1992 Elaine and Bart purchased Hawks

Nest Liquor Supplies and relocated to the Myall Coast.

The bottle shop was a two-lane drive through and a highly successful business, employing many friendly local people.

They made life-long friends among the other local businesspeople and are proud to have seen the town expand, while retaining its beautiful natural assets and charm.

Elaine and Bart have been active members of the Progress Association, Garden Club, Lions and Lionesses, Myall Stringers Ukulele Group and many more.

HAS 2022 THROWN US A NEW CURVE BALL? “Has the new Covid space we’ve suddenly found ourselves in impacted our region’s property market?”

WE enthusiastically launched ourselves into 2022 expecting a return to ‘normal’, only to find we’re still in a strange, uncertain space.

Myall Matters – Progress Association Update meeting since the local election.

Congratulations to our new Mayor, Claire Pontin, the new Deputy Mayor, Alan Tickle, and our new Councillors.

The Progress Association (PA) is organising for a number of Councillors to visit our area on a regular basis to understand our issues and requirements, with the first meeting scheduled for 28 January.

Sadly, both the Lions and Skate Parks were recently badly vandalized with offensive graffiti, with the latter upsetting a number of young local skaters.

We filed a report to the NSW Police and to MCC, including to the MCC volunteer, Ted Bickford (the famous Graffiti Buster).

Ted was able to quickly mobilise a team to repaint the Lions Park amenities and remove all the graffiti from the Skate Park ramps as seen in the photos.

Members of both the Lions Club and Progress Association also cleaned the amenities, which we appreciate the Lions have been doing every Monday morning

A huge shout out to Ted and to all the volunteers as this clean-up was just in time for a free holiday skating clinic organised by the MCC in conjunction with The Totem Collective to be held at 9am this Sunday 23 January at the Skate Park.

On the clean-up theme, we have also registered a number of local sites for Clean Up Australia on the 6 March and welcome community support - stay posted.

This week the PA has its first executive committee meeting, and we look forward to progressing many old and new matters, including the Singing Bridge repairs, street and public information signage, and upgrading the Hawks Nest Community Hall where we host our meetings.

I have also been invited to participate in the MCC Southern Area Reference Group (SARG) this year and look forward to advocating for our community.

The SARG’s focus includes community planning for the southern area of our Local Government Area, which is a key priority for the PA this year.

Finally, the Lions Club Australia Day Breakfast BBQ has unfortunately been cancelled due to the importance of upholding community safety and wellbeing given the escalation of Omicron.

IN the days before digital media, this was a legitimate problem.

I clearly remember my nanna wanting to stick Tom Cruise's face over that of my ex-partner in order to retain the photo of us that took pride of place in her loungeroom.

Given the way the lounge-jumping, fist-pumping Cruise turned out, I think her choice was almost as bad as the person being replaced.

Now, however, not only can every average-looking individual be filtered into an unrecognisable supermodel, apps are available to remove people from the photo altogether.

You can, in fact, reinvent a backyard wedding photo complete with a mangy dog, dilapidated swing set, Uncle Joe with his gammy leg, and a bride showing off one too many tribal tattoos, into a classy affair with an island backdrop, guests including Jason Momoa, a carved ice swan, French champagne, and a bride so digitally enhanced that she looks like Adriana Lima.

Your mother could have protected your feelings and included your new beau in at least some of the photos, giving you the option to purchase the ones you wanted.

By strategically placing him on the far end of the line-up, removal would have been simple if your relationship ends.

If it makes you feel any better, given current divorce statistics, there's a fair degree of likelihood that several couples in the family wedding photos won't last the distance.

If this happens, you can offer your expertise in photo enhancement, removing all members except the mangy dog, who is a bit rough around the edges, but the least offensive family member in terms of personality.

TEA Gardens’ Steve Taylor has recently competed in the esteemed Sydney to Hobart Yacht race as the navigator on Sebastian Bohm’s TP52 ‘Smuggler’.

The 2021 race promised to be a challenging event both on and off the water.

In the midst of the pandemic all sailors had to return a negative PCR test prior to the race start, which forced a handful of boats to abandon the race prior to starting, with key crew testing positive.

Generally, those who were lucky enough to make it to the start line did so with reduced or modified crews.

The start brought a 12-15 knott SSE breeze, and the first downwind spinnaker start in over seven years.
