Miss Caitlyn Kelly, Parliamentary Advisor told News Of The Area, “It is a privilege and an honour to be the Parliamentary Advisor for the Tea Gardens Public School Parliament for the third consecutive year.

“Each year I am astounded at the maturity and confidence in which our

students strive to make positive changes within our school, and this year was no different.

“This school parliament truly reflects the voice of the children and I am filled with pride at each parliamentary sitting, truly grateful to work alongside such strong and conscientious school leaders,” she said.

School Principal Mark Clemson said, “Our students delighted the gallery and debated a number of motions.”

The carried motions were to install bird boxes in the rainforest area and that a covered area be installed outside the stage two classrooms.

However the motion to supply all students from Years 1-6 with a laptop was defeated.

Questions with notice included: the consideration of a toy library for use at lunchtimes, a full licence for MINECRAFT Education? (software) and a ‘ride bikes at school day’.

“Our parliament is based on the Westminster system and has been in operation at the school following a visit to Canberra in 1988.

“Parliament is an opportunity for students to have a voice.

“At our school, every student is known, valued and cared for.

“Our student parliament showcases the voices of our students, their needs, wants and opinions,” he said.

The School Parliament is the vehicle for change giving students the opportunity to discuss what’s best for the students in our community and make positive changes across the school and local community.

The NSW Government has also announced a $100 voucher system for all preschool children to get swimming lessons, and the subcommittee believes that this should also prompt action on the pool.

On 1 June, over 80 people attended a pool meeting to discuss the issue, Jim Meehan (Chair of Pool-Subcommittee of PA) related several stories of local residents having to travel to Maitland or Taree for swim training.

On 21 June, subcommittee members Jim Meehan and Ann O’Brien attended a meeting with Paul Se Szell, Director of Living Communities and Dan Aldridge,

Head of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades to discuss the community’s desire to develop and upgrade the pool.

The concept was supported by the representatives under the idea that an upgrade will lead to a more commercially viable venue.

The subcommittee will be presenting a report to the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association at the next committee meeting advocating for a steering committee to help move the project along.

Progress on the Pool

THE community have come together to show support for the Tea Gardens Pool, with over 2500 signatures on a petition to upgrade the pool.

With less than two weeks to go, the subcommittee hopes to reach 3000 signatures.

Ann O’Brien from the Progress Association subcommittee, said, “The overwhelming support for our petition from all age groups highlights how important the pool is in our community.”

She cited the various uses for the pool in which groups have discussed a need for.

THE Independent Planning Commission has advised that Austasia Leefield has withdrawn its state significant development application for the proposed Pindimar Abalone Farm project.

The community remembers only too well the environmental impacts of the last failed aquaculture project for the region with Huon Aquaculture's ‘Fortress Pens’ failing off the coast in January 2018 releasing 20,000 kingfish into the environment after a severe

Ordinarily, Councillors are elected in NSW for a four year fixed term, however last year the Office of Local Government postponed the 2020 elections until this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That means that this year the community will elect Councillors for a three year term, to put the four year cycle back on track by 2024.

“Should you be successful in being

elected as a Councillor, information you’ll receive at this session will ensure you’re ready to tackle the responsibility and understand your role, and can get a flying start as a new councillor.”

Important election information for candidates from the NSW Office of Local Government, and the NSW Electoral Commission timetable for nominations will be provided at the sessions.

An overview of the role of local government and the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor and Councillors will be covered, along with the qualities of successful councillors.

The sessions will also provide valuable background and understanding of MidCoast Council – an overview which will include the organisational structure, integrated planning and reporting framework, Council’s fees and expenses, budget, long term financial plan and major projects.

1 March 2021 will mark a significant change in the residential building industry for both builders and home owners in NSW. After 1 March 2021, pursuant to the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Regulation 2020 (NSW), a builder performing residential building works will be permitted to utilise the strict and powerful Security Payments Regime that was previously only applicable to commercial building works.

The Security Payments Regime is a complex area of law that requires experienced advice relating to the resolution and disputes on a building site.

From a builder's perspective - A builder will now be able to issue Payment Claims under the Security Payment Regime and enjoy a statutory right

to payments of an amount claimed in a Payment Claim in circumstances where a home owner does not provide a Payment Schedule disputing the amount within the required timeframe.

From a home owner's perspective- It is imperative that the strict timeframes be observed and valid Payment Schedules be provided in response to payment claims issued by a builder. Failure to do so will result in a statutory right for payment in favour of the builder which may not be defendable.

In addition, the Adjudication process will also now be available to residential building works disputes with strict time constraints applying to the parties.

Slipway Upgrade Nearing Completion THE long awaited upgrade of the Tea Gardens Slipway is fast approaching its finalisation.

Locals may have noticed the level of activity at the slipway over the last couple of months.

Paul Bendy, President of the Tea Gardens Slipway Association Incorporated, is excited that the project is nearing completion.

“I am extremely pleased

to report that the 17 week upgrade works at the slipway will be completed on time and we plan to reopen the facility on Saturday 10 July 2021.

“The upgraded facility has been designed to meet current environmental requirements which will enable us to better adapt to future requirements.”

“The new concrete apron has been shaped to collect all waste so it cannot impact the

“There have been five concrete tanks installed below ground under the concrete apron which provide various functions in the treatment of wastewater.

“The wastewater is finally processed in a fully automated treatment plant contained in

“Additionally there has been a toilet, shower and a safety eyewash station installed in the winch-house.

Mr Bendy admitted that this has not been a straightforward or easy project.

There have been a significant number of

approvals that had to be secured before construction could start, and Mr Bendy has worked closely with Bob Lander of Tattersall Lander on the design and implementation, and with the construction team from Centurion Civil, lead by Grant Jefferson and Paul Punch.

Mr Bendy added that the environmental facilities which had to be employed to protect the Myall River during the construction phase had been significant.

NAIDOC Week is held from Sunday 4 July until Sunday 11 July 2021, with the

theme this year being ‘Heal Country!’.

Heal Country calls for greater protections for lands, waters, sacred sites

and cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and

equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

For generations, the traditional owners of this land have been calling for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of culture and heritage and are still waiting for these protections.

A representative of the National NAIDOC Committee (NNC) said, “Healing Country means finally resolving many of the outstanding injustices which impact on the lives of our people.

“It is about hearing and acting on the aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples which are the culmination of generations of consultation and discussions among our nations on a range of issues and grievances.

“After 250 years, our children and our future generations deserve better.

“We cannot afford

to let pass the very real opportunity that now presents itself for reform based on a fundamental change in the relationship Australia has with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

Concept planning begins for Tea Gardens sewer network upgrade CONCEPT planning is underway for a significant upgrade to the Tea Gardens sewer network, after a successful consultant was appointed to the project in May. Over the coming months options will be explored to decide the

best route for a new rising main that will direct sewage from Tea Gardens directly to the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant, which is also set for an upgrade.

The new main will relieve pressure on the existing network and significantly reduce the

risk of sewer overflows occurring during wet weather events.

A new transfer pump station will also be constructed at the existing vacuum sewer station off Spinifex Way. Council’s Director of Infrastructure and

Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said selecting the best route for the rising main was an essential part of the project.

THE members of the Bulahdelah Garden Club have been enjoying themselves on recent outings.

The 49 members all enjoy the opportunity to dress up and get together for a chat.

The members of the Bulahdelah Garden Club are keen to explore gardens and discuss various plants.

Lorretta Simpson of the Bulahdelah Garden Club told News Of The Area, “The club is a social one, we have morning tea first prior to a short meeting when we get together.

“Sometimes we have a lunch, where we bring share plates, or we go out for a meal.”

The group carpools to get to venues and they explore gardens and venues around the region, which allows some of the

older members to stay active within the club.

Masking is the task at hand

JUST when we thought we’d seen the last of face masks and physical distancing, restrictions have come roaring back into Port Stephens and the Myall Coast.

From 6pm Saturday

26 June, everyone must wear a mask whilst inside commercial premises such as shops, gyms, restaurants, cinemas and cafes, as well as outdoor sporting venues.

Masks may be removed for eating and drinking.

Exemptions are made for people living with mental

health issues, intellectual disabilities or sensory processing issues.

Children under 12 years of age are not required to wear masks.

Masks should be worn over both the nose and the mouth, and not pushed down over the chin or up

BACK To The Future was a student research competition centred around finding innovative, multi-disciplinary proposals for regional Australian Settlements.

In Summer 2021, North Arm Cove was selected as the case study due to its unique history.

Students were tasked to research and explore the historical context of North

The competition aimed to invite younger generations to look past the now to create a sustainable and innovative future.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club q Celebrating Sue Morris’s special “O” Birthday

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 22 June: No bowls played due to closure of the Green Thursday 24 June: No social bowls, due to the weather conditions.

Round two of the Club Minor Singles Competition was played On Rink 9 Lynda Richards and Jean Glover battled for 33 ends.

Lynda took an early lead, sevent shots ahead by the 10th end, 10 v 3.

By the 17th end Jean had narrowed this margin to four shots and by the 25th end she was in front by three shots (18 v 15).

Lynda decided it was time to get back into the game and it was “even Steven” by the 28th end, 19 all.

The 31st end 22 all, Lynda gained two on the next end, the score now 24 v 22, still anyone’s game.

Lynda just needed one point to claim victory which she managed to do winning , 25 v 22.

On the next Rink Sheril Johnson held a five point lead on the 7th end, bowling against Irene Roberts, 8 v 3.

The next nine ends belonged to Irene, gaining 13 shots and taking the lead, 16 v 8.

Sheril hung in there for another nine ends but was ultimately defeated on the 24th end 25 v 13.

A similar tale on the next Rink Pam Gilchrist in front by five points after four ends 7 v 2, then Bette Saillard came from behind, gaining a six shot lead by the 13th end, 16 v 10.

This game was concluded by the 21st end Bette winning 27 v 13.

Ingrid Luck and Lyn Nightingale were “neck to neck” on the 12th end the score was twelve all, it looked like this was going to be a long haul but Ingrid produced some magic shots winning the next six ends adding fourteen shots to her tally and holding Lyn scoreless.

Ingrid won after eighteen ends of bowling 26 v 12.

All spectators commented on the high standard of play in this competition.

TGWBC Blue team, (Lynda Richards, Judi Polak, Bette Saillard & Robyn Beaumont) had a home game against Mayfield West we held a narrow lead all the way in this game, winning 13 v 9.

By the time they made the sequel, the folks behind Despicable Me had clearly realised the goldmine they had in the Minions, so they’ve got an expanded role here, which should please fans of their madcap mischief. One-time supervillain turned super dad Gru (voiced by Steve Carell, above) is back, and this time he’s fighting evil, not masterminding it. Every bit as enjoyable as the original.

What could go wrong when five comedians compete in an off-the-wall game show? Well, as it turns out, nothing. Everything goes spectacularly, hilariously well in Taskmaster. A huge success in Britain, the panel show panel boasting some very batty banter has since spawned offshoots in Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland and New Zealand. Hosted by Greg Davies (right) and Alex Horne, it’s the sort of show that can make Monday a joyous affair.

Tonight, settle in for a raucous double episode.

In “This Is Trevor”, The Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas grapples with awkward hand-wear. Then, in “Aquatic Sewing Machine”, coffee pots aren’t his friend.

“I’d like to renovate my bathroom.

Can I make my dream bathroom come alive for under $10,000?”

I don’t know the value of your home, but as a general rule, bathroom renovations should represent no more than 2% of your home’s value. If your home is worth say, $500,000, then $10,000 is a rough guide for what you should spend without over-capitalising. So, my short answer is - absolutely! If it’s a total renovation, to get the most bang for your buck do your product research on tile and fittings suppliers. There are so many around that competition is fierce, the quality and range superb and deals are there to be done. Select trades wisely and only use qualified electricians and plumbers and ensure waterproofed areas – around baths, showers, toilets and vanity are professionally done. If you like your current tiles but not their colour, you can save lots of money simply by painting them with special tile paint.

For the best result, and painted tiles can look fantastic, read – and follow – the instructions especially regarding priming! Alternatively, you’ll be surprised what a lift the simple act of changing grout colour gives a bathroom.

It was our Indigenous Round and we would like to thank Mr Maurice Perry for doing the Smoking Ceremony and Ms Renae Lamb and Karuah Public School Aboriginl dance kids for their attendance.

The Rooettes were up first against Maitland United.

Ashlei Grande was first to score with Ebony Oakley converting 6/0.

Then Ebony scored and converted her own try 12/0.

Captain Tamara Lilley was next to score for the Rooettes with Ebony again converting 18/0.

Next was Chloe Zdebski to score 22/0, next to Ashley Bills in her first game back after 9 months from knee surgery and Ebony converting once again 28/0.

Then Lexi Beagan scored just before half time and Ebony converted to take the score to 34/0 at half time.

Tamara Lilley was in for her second try of the day with Ebony converting 40/0.

The Smoking Ceremony was done at half time with all four teams, then an emotional minute's silence was held for Ben Langdon before the Karuah Roos took on the Gloucester Magpies.

The Roos wore an Indigenous designed jersey while the Roosettes wore Indigenous shorts.

Mitch Turvey was first to score for the Roos 4/0, next Luke Perry 8/0, then Adam Crampton 12/0.

I'M in a relatively new relationship (six weeks) and last week my new love interest brought his toiletries bag and left it in my bathroom.

I'm not sure whether to tell him he forgot it, or whether he's put it there for when he visits.

I don't really like it on my cabinet because it looks weird next to the pot plant and candles.

Mrs Jenny K. Dear Jenny, JUST this week, my dog went into season which means I have to keep her away from all male dogs, particularly the very amorous fox terrier that lives a few houses away and who drops by to mark his territory by urinating on my outdoor plants, the front door, the cashmere sweater drying in the sun, and any other surface he can cock his tiny little leg over.

How one animal can hold so much fluid is beyond me.

When I take my dog for a walk, she now rubs her body over the grass, no doubt spreading her pheromones to alert every mutt that there's a pedigree in town.

It's hard work.

Bear with me, Jenny, this is leading somewhere.

When a male leaves his toiletry bag, it's a not-so-subtle sign that he's marking his territory (admittedly in a far more gracious way than a rabid hound.

Next, you'll find a pair of his shoes at the door, or a spare phone charger in the wall.

Soon, he'll keep a carton of fullcream milk in the fridge because he doesn't like the way your almond milk tastes, and then, before you know it, you'll both be 27 with a kid on the way, and you'll wonder how it all stemmed from a rather innocent looking bag containing a toothbrush, some mouthwash, anti-fungal cream (what the?), tweezers, a shaving brush and some deodorant (at least he has reasonable hygiene -- don't even pretend you didn't have a sneaky look at the contents).

Now, where you go from here is entirely up to you.

If you aren't ready to move into this next phase, then you need to let him know he's accidentally left his bag behind.

If you're more than happy for him to start taking over your personal space, one item at a time, until he's on the lease agreement, then just say nothing and enjoy the slow slide from independence to cohabitation.

LAKES Trail Fest Postponed FROM Page 20

COVID-19 had other ideas. “(With) Sydney now in lockdown until midnight Friday 2 July we have made the tough decision to postpone the LAKES Trail Festival.

“Most of our runners and the event team are now restricted to Sydney

and we do not believe it is right to leave it till the last minute to make a call,” said a statement on the LAKES Trail Festival Facebook page.

At the LAKES Trail Festival runners can complete 100km, 75km, 50km or 25km.

There will also be a 12km and 5km course for those wanting a shorter trail

experience.

Solo runners can go for a quick run or go all day in the ultimate 100km.

Teams of up to four can run the 100km course separated into 25km legs and finish together as a team.

The race will start and finish in Hawks Nest taking runners along beaches,

past lakes, through forests tracking some of the most stunning coastal scenery in Australia.

It will have the arguably the most beautiful half way point in Australia at Seal Rocks.

“The course follows existing tracks and trails, beaches, lake edges and single track,” said Race Director Richard Old. “It will be unique as it combines coastal trails

with forest tracks, sand dunes, beaches and rocky headlands taking runners through remote areas that normally do not attract visitors.

“What the race lacks in elevation it makes up for with variety of terrain.

“This is more than just a race, it is an adventure,” he said.

The LAKES Trail Festival is about self-discovery, the re-creation of a

sense of adventure and encouraging exploration of the natural landscape.

It is about challenging runners, taking them to new places and out of their comfort zone.

David Garcia had a ding dong battle with David proving more consistent.

He won that match 3122.

First year rookie Tony Butler acquitted himself well against his vastly more experienced opponent, Greg Brown. Tony has only been playing for a few months and did well in taking eleven shots of Greg.

Playing against a Club Singles champion is always difficult and so it was when Geoffrey Muggleton played Jeff Baker.

Jeff clinched the game 31-14.

Peter Gurney shook off the barnacles yesterday because today he was back to his best winning comfortably over Greg Smith 31-8.

John Slater also had a good win against Anthony Grant, a bowler we would like to see more of, John won the match 31-16.

There is more rain forecast for the coming week and hopefully it will not affect the continuation of the Major Singles.

Because some players had to forfeit, others are yet to play next weekend, but all signs are there for some fierce competition as we progress to the pointy end of the Championship.

TEA Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News 23 June After the heavy rain from the weekend, greenkeeper Peter Thornton found a way to have both greens in play for the Wednesday Triples competition.

A good field of 43 players faced the starters in a draw for partners format.

The winners on 21 points were John Payne, Peter Cheney and Peter Gurney.

The lucky losers on seventeen points were Bryan McPhie, Glen Reinhard and Mark Hair.

The Club Championship Major Singles at last made a start today after the washout of last weekend.

It was great to see some new players trusting their arms this year against more fancied opposition.

No walk in the park for Peter as at one stage the scores were tied at 18-18.

Peter eventually won 31-20, but great to see Andy give it a go.

Another novice, John Payne took on the formidable Greg Brown.

Greg won the match 31-11, but a creditable performance from John, nonetheless.

Notification of project proposal and registration of interest under OEH Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (Stage 1) – Proposed development at Fame Cove - Bundabah McCardle Cultural heritage (MCH) have been engaged by de Witt Consulting, on behalf of Tea Gardens Farms Pty Ltd (67 Mars Road, Lane Cove West NSW 2066)) to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application, if required, for the proposed development at Fame Cove, Bundabah (Lot 2 DP1076610, Lot 2 DP1076610, Lot 4 DP252388, Lot 14 DP128401, Lot 22 DP23840, Lot 100 DP1049845, Lot 101 DP1049845, Lot 103 DP1049845 and Lot 104 DP1049845).

The purpose of community consultation with Aboriginal people is to assist the proposed applicant in the preparation of the AHIP application if required and to assist the Chief Executive of Heritage NSW, Department of Premier & Cabinet in his or her consideration and determination of the application should an AHIP be required.

In compliance with the Heritage NSW policy - Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, MCH would like to extend an invitation to Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the proposed project area and who can determine the significance of Aboriginal object(s) and/or place(s) in the area of the proposed project to register an interest in the consultation process for this project.

Written registrations must be forward to MCH (P.O. Box 166 Adamstown, NSW, 2289; penny@mcheritage.com.au no later than C.O.B. 15th July 2021.

All registered parties will then be contacted to discuss the project in compliance with Heritage NSW policy. If you register your interest in this project, please also nominate your preferred option to receive the initial information. You may wish to attend a non-paid meeting and receive an information pack, or receive an information packet through the mail or e-mail.

Any parties to register are advised that, unless otherwise requested, their details will be forward to Heritage NSW and the relevant LALC within 28 days of the closing date of registration and in compliance with Heritage NSW policy.

TRAIL running is a big thing that has grown as a fitness outlet since COVID-19 hit and Australians seek new ways to exercise.

Sadly, Australia’s newest off road ultra running event, the LAKES Trail Festival, which will see runners traversing the Myall Lakes region, has been postponed due to recently implemented Covid-19 restrictions.

The Festival now hopes to be bringing trail running to the coast from October 29 to 31 2021.

The event, which was meant to be held over the first weekend in July, will see runners descend on Hawks Nest to explore the region's tracks, trails and beaches.
