Lest We Forget - Remembrance Day in Tea Gardens

LAST week was the 102nd anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War One. The occasion was safely commemorated by over 120 locals safely outside at the Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest War Memorial, all sharing in a touching service conducted by the Tea Gardens RSL SubBranch (TG RSL).

There were over 13 wreaths laid, including from local police, emergency services, the Red Cross and Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair.

Many of the wreaths were handmade by Cheryl Roberts, the Secretary, who worked hard to ensure the day was organised and safe.

The Vice President, Shane Griffis, told NOTA,”We do this lest we forget. I served. I was proud to serve and my family served back to World War One, including as one of the Rats of Tobruk.”

The “Rats of Tobruk” is

the name proudly given to the 14,000 Australian soldiers who held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the German Army under General Rommel.

The soldiers used a network of tunnels and caves to maintain their positions and the German’s derisively described them as ‘rats’, a name the Australians proudly took up, taking the rat as their insignia with the words ‘no surrender’.

The ceremony ended with all rising to stand in silence while The Last Post played under the flag at Full Mast.

The Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest war memorial on Marine Drive was officially opened in March 2002, and is a special spot dedicated to all those who serve.

MidCoast Council is seeking feedback from the community on a proposal to expand the area for medium density residential development.

The site that is the subject of the planning proposal is located on Sanderling Avenue at Hawks Nest, to the immediate east of the car park and clubhouse of the Golf Club, which is already zoned for medium density residential development.

A voluntary planning agreement is also on exhibition which has been developed in association with the rezoning.

The agreement will support the recovery and long-term management of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens koala population through targeted survey work.

The agreement will also help establish the ‘John Davis Memorial Walk’ along Sanderling Avenue, provide assistance to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club and assist with improvements to the ‘Michael Rowe Walk’ that forms the Hawks Nest section of the ‘Tops to Myall Heritage Walking Trail’.

Obtaining feedback from the community is an important step before the proposal is further considered by Council and the State Government.

Council staff will be hosting an information session on Thursday 3 December from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

Sessions are by appointment only to ensure COVID-19 restrictions are being adhered to.

A will-maker must have legal capacity to make a Will. Much of the legal test is easy to apply but the difficult part of the test is to judge whether the will-maker can properly weigh up their moral responsibilities towards family members.

As Shakespeare noted in the 7 ages of man, as we age our “last scene” is “second childishness” and this brings with it vulnerability. As a result, it can be common for will-makers to unexpectedly seek to change their Will to reduce entitlements to family members when being pressured by a family member. In a recent case of Bracher v Jones [2020] NSWSC 1024 Judge Robbs overturned the last Will of a will-maker. Mrs J died leaving 2 homes worth approximately $1.2m each.

(a son and a daughter) and this was considered to be her long held intention.

But in her last Will she left her estate entirely to her son. The Judge found that she had not been able withstand pressure from the son who was suffering from delusions about his sister (he accused her of stealing from her mother) and a result was not capable of evaluating the strength of the daughter’s entitlement.

The Judge found her to lack legal capacity to make the Will and also found that the “constant importuning of an old and weakened person” with compromised testamentary capacity was coercion by the son causing a finding of undue influence by him.

Myall Lakes Matters LAST week was stormy but the clouds cleared for locals to celebrate NAIDOC week and Remembrance Day. With five weeks to Christmas, tourism has been taking off with lots of local hospitality and catering jobs being advertised on social media in the lead up to the Christmas holidays.

MIDCOAST Council has revised plans to install a bank of six fish cleaning tables at the Crowdy Head boat harbour, following community concern.

Instead the tables, which have been funded by the Department of Primary Industries Recreational Fishing Trust, will be installed at Hawks Nest and Coomba Park.

Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge, said the Hawks Nest and Coomba Park communities had made it clear that fish cleaning tables would be valued in their locations.

“They’re over the moon about receiving them,” Mr Aldridge said.

“We’ll be installing four at Hawks Nest and two at Coomba Park.

“The feedback has been really positive from both of those communities and we’re pleased that we are now able to offer the same level of service fishers receive at most of our other boat launching ramps,” Mr Aldridge said.

He added that Council would reconsider the placement of fish cleaning tables at Crowdy Head in conjunction with the redevelopment of the Co-op.

Work on the installation of the tables is expected to take place over the next few months, with ramp users and locals notified through signage at each site when work is due to start.

AWARD-winning quilt maker and designer, Mrs Clare Lewis, has this year organised 22 quilters to participate in the Community Quilt Challenge project organised through Novocastrian Quilts.

All quilters were given the same panel of fabric, donated

by Kennard and Kennard Fabrics, to use as inspiration and the basis for making a quilt in a design of their choice.

The resulting creations showcase the talent and skill of quilters across the region and as far north as Grafton and down to Canberra.

Quilters responded to Clare’s call out through her Never Ending Quilting business and donated

their time, expertise, and additional fabric, backing, and binding for the quilts to be donated to a variety of charities.

Participating quilter, Mrs Ursula Fairless told News Of The Area, “This year has been disruptive for all of us and this project has given all quilters something to focus on.”

“So many people have given something to the project during this difficult time.”

Mrs Lewis told News Of The Area “The quilts will be divided up between a number of charities, including the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, nursing homes, to support victims of domestic violence, and homeless shelters.”

Bulahdelah Remembrance Day

THE RSL’s and parks may have been a little quieter this year, but Remembrance Day was just as important than ever.

November 11 marked the 102nd year anniversary of guns falling silent on the Western Front after four years of continuous warfare; the end of World War I. Over 60 thousand Australians died in service during 1914 to 1918.

In the subsequent wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping and humanitarian operations, nearly two million men and women from the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force have served.

Originally known as Armistice Day, this was

renamed at the end of World War II to Remembrance Day in order to remember all who have and are serving.

A one minute silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month was shared across the country by people paying tribute to those who risked their lives.

Tragically, over onehundred thousand names are listed on the roll at the Australian War Memorial, with Bulahdelah RSL SubBranch and Vice-President; Steven Newman, noting 70 names on the honour roll at the Bulahdelah RSL. With the Great Lakes Region being vastly spread, Newman stated that quite a number of locals who served have “never been recognised”.

restrictions, they decided to have a small gathering in the auditorium in the Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

Having had family in the Australian Defence Forces (ADF), Newman felt strongly about the day being allowed to go ahead after COVID-19 restrictions prevented the typical ANZAC Day commemorations.

“Remembrance Day is to remember everyone that has been lost in a conflict,” he said.

“It is a big day on the calendar, as is Anzac Day. “Everyone lit the candle and displayed their patriotism on ANZAC Day with their driveway commitments.

“It really was good and next year will be different again.”

The RSL Sub-Branch President, and Vietnam veteran Peter Millen performed the service, and Sub-Branch member John Renfrew laid the wreath on behalf of the RSL. John Sahyoun, Bulahdelah Chairman for the National Party of Australia, attended the Remembrance Ceremony along with the Country Women’s Associations (CWA) and the Bulahdelah Central School, which had a good turn out.

“It was great. We like to support our citizens who have in the past actually served in the national services.

“We truly appreciate their efforts giving us the ability to live in a free country.

“We’re hoping for a brighter and better 2021 and hopefully these ceremonies will be able to persist into the future.”

If you love the home, and you have the passion to work within the guidelines, I say don’t be afraid, be excited about the purchase and engage the best people to work with you. Yes, there might be plenty of tears, but there’ll also be plenty of joy. When you own a significant home, you are the custodian of a slice of our country’s development. THE Bulahdelah Show Committee in July, made the difficult decision to cancel our annual show, which would have been held on the 21 and 22 November, due to COVID-19 and the current restrictions in place.

We were not alone in this decision, as many agricultural shows in NSW have done the same.

Our parent body, the ASC, have been working hard behind the scenes on our behalf with the Government bodies concerned and progress has been made for shows to recommence in 2021.

This has been good news for us, and we

Origins of the name Myall OPINION

DEAR News Of The Area, THIS is my response to the question posed in Myall Matters (NOTA, Thursday 12 November Edition).

Thanks to the Myall Coast NOTA for asking the question where did the name Myall come from?

I can take us back to the mid-1820s with reasonable accuracy.

The name is Aboriginal, but the naming of the Myall Creek Massacre of 1838, which occured in the area between Inverell and Moree, shows that the word, ‘myall’, was not limited to this area.

In 1826, the surveyor for the Australian Agricultural Company, John Armstrong, used a map that had phonetic Aboriginal names for places.

The map shows that at that time, our river may have been known as either the Meluline or Myall River.

The following note from a court case in 1826 shows that ‘Myall’ was already the commonly accepted name for our River, recording, “John Ridgway, Samuel Chip, Edward Colhurst, and one Stanley, not before the Court, were indicted for the willful murder of an Aboriginal native youth, called Tommy, at Myall River, near Port Stephens, on the 8th day of May last (1826).”

In 1826, Robert Dawson was the first Commissioner of the Australian Agricultural Company and he established their first headquarters at Carrington and Tahlee, both on the north shore of Port Stephens.

He was sacked three years later, partly because he spent too much time (in the opinion of his employers) exploring the Company’s holdings, usually with a group of Aboriginal men who became his friends.

On his arrival at Port Stephens, Dawson was informed a party of convict cedar cutters was at work, “a considerable distance up the country, at the source of one of the rivers, are excited to be able to commence planning for a fantastic, super action packed show on the 20 and 21 November in 2021.

Shows throughout with the support of the ASC have been making and displaying "NO SHOW SCARECROWS", around the time of their usual annual show, and our President, Gary Gooch and some of our committee members, along with the assistance of Stacey and Maddie from the Bulahdelah Newsagency, have made a scarecrow, which they are kindly displaying in their shop window.

called by the natives ‘Myall’ meaning in their language, stranger or a place which they seldom or never frequent.”

Dawson was forced to journey to the source of the Myall River to investigate the murder of Tommy the Aboriginal boy.

Then, in 1826, accompanied by six Aboriginal men and three convicts, Dawson set off to explore the country between Karuah and Gloucester following roughly the route of what is now known as The Bucketts Way. Dawson’s Aboriginal companions insisted that they each have a gun to defend themselves from ‘Myalls’ on the way.

As they travelled, Dawson spoke with his companions about many topics.

One topic was cannibalism and Dawson’s Worimi friends insisted that ‘Myall’ people were known to carry out this practice, but Port Stephens people never did.

They also spoke about the different ways the ‘Myalls’ built shelters and weapons and behaved towards strangers.

On several occasions on his journey up to the Bucketts and back, Dawson’s party met with ‘Myalls’.

This was such an early interaction between Europeans and Aboriginals in this area, that the ‘Myalls’ had never seen a horse before and were fascinated to touch the animal.

One point of interest with the ‘Myalls’ was that they cared for the environment using fire.

During his 1826 journey, Dawson and his party were surrounded by the fires the Myalls lit.

Dawson was struck by the fact that much of the country around Stroud and up to Gloucester reminded him of an English gentleman’s estate.

Dear Helen, Ah, the wonderful democratic process of school elections has an awful lot in common with the outfall from more, shall we say, presidential electoral processes.

There was your son, who had promised everything under the sun: turning the corner on school assessments, liberty and freedom, the removal of archaic testing systems in favour of self determination. I bet he even did one of those crowd-pleasing dances — sort of like Ellen DeGeneres if she had a fractured spine. And then what happened?

The votes were tallied (hidden away in the staff room). Then there were rumours of a random truck delivery of illegal votes. And now your little ray of sunshine has lost out to some annoying kid who is always winning citizenships awards when he’s not volunteering to do extra reading with the kindy kids in his lunch break or intentionally slowing down in his running races to give others a chance.

I mean, what happened to winning at all costs? When did we turn into a bunch of pussies?

Maybe your son could demand a recount? It’s a proposition that’s going great guns in the US (no pun intended).

Fellowship, the highest award in Lions for her dedicated humanitarian services, and other district awards, Kate was also the Port Stephens Local Woman of the Year in 2014, and the Apex Kurri Kurri Citizen of the Year award in 1992.

Kate was much loved and highly respected for her achievements and her stoicism and generosity, including her four year battle with cancer.

She is now at peace, leaving behind her a legacy of incredible humanitarian service much admired by those who knew her.

Two weeks ago she was able to spend some time with close friends at Barrington who organised an early 70th birthday celebration, and in true form Kate gave us some words to keep close, “ageing is cruel, girlfriends are beautiful”.

On the day before she died Kate was participating at the Convention for Lions held at Maitland, and convened by Barry.

She acknowledged all who knew her, many as Lions District Governor and she had worked alongside members for many hours over many years.

This was a special gift for Lions members.

The large Probus Membership at Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest remember Kate had a gift for writing and if there was a small time slot at Probus Monthly Meetings that needed filling she would entertain with her poetry and other stories. Those lucky enough to have been present on those occasions appreciated her wonderful talent.

Kate will be very much missed.

A memorial for Kate will be held however due to Covid restrictions numbers are limited.

Barry thanks everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and condolences for Kate's passing.

Strength for Life IT’S great news for local over50s as the Strength for Life exercise program re-launches at a number of locations across the MidCoast.

Strength for Life is a program designed specifically for people over 50, involving progressive resistance training to improve strength, balance, coordination and endurance.

The program has been developed by COTA (Council on the Ageing) NSW and is provided across the MidCoast with support from Midcoast Assist, an ageing support service of MidCoast Council.

Local instructors have re-launched classes that

were closed at the height of the pandemic, at Forster, Gloucester, Taree and Tea Gardens.

As part of the relaunch, a new class has also been introduced at Harrington.

All Strength for Life instructors are exercise professionals who undertake extra training with COTA NSW to be accredited with the program.

This training covers the needs of older people and how to work with different types of injuries and conditions.

“The beauty of the Strength for Life program is that it is specially designed for older

people, and the instructors are sensitive to your needs,” said COTA NSW CEO Meagan Lawson.

“Keeping yourself moving and getting stronger helps you to stay independent and continue doing all the activities you enjoy.

“You’ll be better able to carry shopping and play with your grandchildren, as well as reducing the risk of falls and other injuries.’

the country to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Floodplain management RESIDENTS are being urged to view and share their thoughts on MidCoast Council’s Draft Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans for Gloucester and Port Stephens, that are on public exhibition until 9 December.

The draft management studies and plans were endorsed for exhibition at October’s Council meeting to provide community members, particularly residents of the Gloucester and Port Stephens regions, an opportunity to understand Council’s draft plans and provide feedback on them.

The feedback provided will be incorporated into the final plans for each location and given the recent weather conditions, the reports are a timely assessment of the way Council manages these important floodplains.

“We’ve developed a revised flood study so that we can provide more technical information on flood behaviour in terms of levels, velocity and extent of floods and this has allowed us to better understand and mitigate flood risk in these areas,” explained Rob Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services.

“We understand though that no one knows these areas as well as the people who live here and community participation is an integral part of the planning process, so I would encourage the community to take a look at the draft documents and share their feedback.”

Council has held two drop in sessions and will be holding another two drop in sessions during the exhibition period for residents to be able to discuss their ideas with staff who conducted the studies and prepared the plans.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club News and Results

HAWKS Nest Bridge Club is delighted to announce that it will shortly be returning to competitive bridge at the Clubhouse following discussions with relevant bridge authorities and the dramatically improved NSW Covid situation. Of course, certain restrictions will remain to conform to Covid Safe protocols.

These will include continuing to limit the number of playing tables, maintaining social distancing and meeting all current health and hygiene regulations.

Like all organisations, the Bridge Club has a NSW approved Covid Safety Plan which is checked regularly and updated as required.

In the remaining game, Robyn Beaumont and Jeff Baker were far too good for Irene Roberts and Dennis Longman, winning comfortably 22 – 11.

15 November The perfect bowling weather continued today for the final of the Club Mixed Pairs competition between Karen and Ron Green and Robyn Beaumont and Jeff Baker.

There was little difference between the leads, both setting up opportunities for their skips and for the first half of the game Karen and Ron were well in the game trailing 7-8 after nine ends.

A fortuitous conversion

on the 10th by Jeff Baker saw his team come away with 4 shots to make a break.

The Greens tried valiantly to get back into the game but a similar conversion from Jeff at about the 15th end, to take 5, really put paid to their chances.

Robyn and Jeff completed the match winning 20-14 to be crowned Mixed Pairs winners for 2020.

Congratulations to all the players who took part in the competition!

In other news: Contrary to that was previously published, Dolphin Day is now scheduled for the morning of Saturday 21 November.

It will be played with the ladies and the “Shirts v Skirts” trophy will be decided.

11 NOVEMBER: A very special Remembrance Day was celebrated today with players pausing to pay homage to all those who served and are still serving in our armed forces so that we can enjoy our freedom.

Lest we forget!

It was a great day for bowls and a good turnout of 58 players competed.
