‘DRIVE so others survive’ is the theme this National Road Safety Week (May 15-22), with community members being asked to pledge their commitment to ensuring safety on our roads.

Local emergency services personnel and MidCoast Council staff gathered last week to take the road safety pledge.

Changes proposed for MidCoast Council meetings MIDCOAST Council is proposing changes to its Code of Meeting Practice to allow councillors to attend meetings virtually and permit recording of the community forums.

“We are asking our community to look at some key amendments and inclusions to our Code of Meeting Practice.

“The changes will allow us to make better use of technology to hold meetings when face-to-face meetings aren’t practical or possible,” Council’s General Manager Adrian Panuccio explained.

All councils must adopt a code of meeting practice after each council election under the NSW Local Government Act. The Code must include mandatory provisions as set out in the Model Meeting Code.

The Code of Meeting Practice applies to all Council meetings.

It sets standards and outlines the

meeting process and requirements after meetings.

Conduct such as rules of debate, confidential matters, time limits on meetings, order of business and voting are included.

During COVID-19 restrictions the NSW Government made provision for audiovisual links for NSW council meetings.

The proposed changes to the code provide rules for audio-visual attendance of meetings.

“Our community has been asking us to record the forums held before each meeting.

“The amendment will allow those who can’t attend in person to hear the proceedings,” Mr Panuccio said.

An amendment to the code will allow for recording of the forums.

There are some other minor amendments to the code, which are

highlighted in an online draft copy.

“While our regional roads program is receiving $100 million over a six year period, we know our local roads need more attention,” Mayor Pontin said.

“The elected Council has decided that while local roads cannot be fixed in one year, it is crucial that we start this work now.

“We have agreed to put an additional $7.5 million towards this in the coming budget, even though this will result in a deficit in our budget for 2022-23. ”We have committed to returning the budget to a

balanced position through a budget review during the coming financial year.”

Mayor Pontin explained the local road network doesn’t attract funding through State or Federal Government grants like the regional road network has in recent years.

“Maintaining our local road network is a constant challenge for us and I am continuing to lobby for additional funding from other levels of government.”

Another priority for the next few years is improving Council’s responsiveness to customer interactions according to Mayor Pontin.

“Through our business

transformation program we will become more efficient in the way we provide services to the community.

“The program includes reducing time taken to respond to customer enquiries, staff training, improving technology to provide better business systems, greater access to Council services online and increasing business efficiency.”

Other focus areas include improving development assessment timeframes, working with businesses to create an Economic Development Strategy and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

“We need experienced diplomats to engage in respectful and mutually supportive endeavours with our neighbours and if elected, this is something I am passionate to implement,” Joanne said.

Many young people think they don’t need a Will – mainly because they think nothing will happen to them, or they have no assets. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Here are some reasons why you should have a Will: No evidence of intentions: there is no document to show how you would like your assets to be dealt with or distributed on your death. Don’t assume people know your intentions, or that your assets will automatically pass to your partner, particularly if you want to give specific assets to certain people. You wouldn’t want your assets to end up with the wrong people.

Relationship: are you in a relationship and living with someone for the last 2 years? If so, you may be considered a de facto partner. On your death, if you have no Will, then your assets may pass to your de facto partner, rather than your family or other preferred people.

Superannuation: Most young people work. When you work, you accrue superannuation, and some superannuation funds have a life insurance policy attached to your superannuation benefits. If you have no nominated beneficiary to receive your superannuation (and perhaps life insurance proceeds) on your death, then your superannuation (and life insurance) will most likely form part of your estate. In this instance, if you have no Will, then you cannot elect who will receive your superannuation death benefits on your death.

Without a Will, you risk having your estate being distributed to people you may no longer have a relationship with or simply not want them to receive a benefit from your estate. Take the time.

Josephine Cashman to run for One Nation in Lyne

By Tara CAMPBELL THE Federal Election is just days away and News Of The Area is introducing you to the candidates for the election.

Josephine Cashman is standing as a member of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party, for the seat of Lyne in the upcoming election.

As a descendant from the Warrimay people from the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, her family have had many years of connection to the local land and Josephine hopes to be given the chance to represent the area at a Federal level.

“If I am successful, I promise to honour the voices of our electorate.

“I am committed to serving my electorate and its

constituents to the best of my ability which will involve listening to diverse concerns, acting upon them in a timely manner and communicating results from my electoral office,” she said.

After completing studies, Josephine worked as a Crown Prosecutor and has received multiple highly commended declarations from the Director of Public Prosecutions for two cases she has run.

Josephine has also worked as a member of Tony Abbott’s Indigenous Advisory Council and served as the Chair of its Safe Communities Committee until 2017.

She has a vast background in Law, and has previously been appointed to the Board of the Sydney Harbour

Federation Trust and a Friend of the Commonwealth Treasury “As a former New South Wales Crown Prosecutor, I feel an obligation to support our nation.

“I feel compelled to speak against the abuse I have witnessed occurring in Aboriginal communities and elsewhere because there are not many politicians that have been listening to the people who are suffering,” she said.

Josephine says that financial and other resources rarely reach the people who need it the most.

“For instance, many people living in Aboriginal communities argue this is partly caused by imposters who gain powerful positions

within universities, the public service, inside our valued institutions, and inside Land Councils and Native Title groups.

“Those who falsely claim Aboriginal heritage do it because it is easy and successive governments have done nothing about it, despite desperate calls to end it and the consequences have been devastating inside Aboriginal communities and elsewhere,” she said.

If elected Josephine says she will call for policy reforms and fight for the implementation of pragmatic solutions.

“I am committed to stopping the implementation of the divisive Uluru Statement and the defunding of Aboriginal

MIDCOAST Council advises it will begin work to remove the viewing platform at Winda Woppa Reserve Lagoon during May. The viewing platform, which was constructed by a community group, was not a Council facility, and so is

not included in Council’s maintenance budget.

It has now fallen into disrepair and become a public safety concern.

Council has looked into the feasibility of repairing it, and has been advised it is beyond repair.

As neither Council nor

the community group have the funds to support a full replacement, the platform will need to be removed.

Works will start as early as Thursday 12 May, weather permitting.

Council will liaise with relevant NSW Government agencies to ensure the

marine environment is not unduly affected during works.

Local community groups have been approached for feedback on the potential of recycling timbers and other material from the viewing platform by gifting them to a community organisation.

“For years they’ve donated a space within the hotel for our monthly sewing bees so holding our event there was a no-brainer,” Julie said.

The upcoming event has something for everyone, with a huge raffle, lucky door prizes, marvellous Drag Queen Bingo entertainment, and of course, a morning tea and glass of bubbles.

The Boomerang Bags Group hosts a number of local events that benefit the community.

Biggest Morning Tea BOOMERANG Bags will be hosting an event in Tea Gardens to raise funds for Cancer Council.

Boomerang Bags are a local community group that have been active in the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area for over five years and are passionate about the antiplastic message.

The group has partnered with Tea Gardens Hotel to cohost the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ on 20 May 2022 at the venue,

“We try to choose charities that we feel an affinity with.

“We only recently donated $4000 to a handful of local charities and hopefully we can beat our last Biggest Morning Tea effort for the Cancer Council.

“I’m always very proud of our volunteers - a small but dedicated group,” Julie said.

The Biggest Morning Tea event is being held on Friday 20 May at 11am, with tickets mandatory.

Bulahdelah Artist’s Work On Exhibition in Coonabarabran

By Marian SAMPSON BULAHDELAH artist Carol Archer is heading inland for a unique collaborative exhibition that will showcase the environment.

Part of the exhibition is Carol Archer’s etching titled ‘Kairos’.

It is a framed picture, 22cm high and 15cm wide, and consists of black ink on white paper.

‘Kairos’ depicts a lush environment, a creek bed perhaps.

The artist asks you to imagine that you are on a bush track, with a steep slope in front of you.

At the top, several eucalypts, a tree fern, and a small section of a wooden fence are silhouetted darkly against a white sky.

At the bottom of the picture, near where you might be standing, is a bright sunlit rock.

Half-way up the slope, past a strip of deep shadow, the sun catches the fronds of a large bird’s-nest fern.

Close up, the picture is densely worked, filled with a network of intricate marks.

The picture is inspired by the thriving forest recorded in ‘Chronos’.

At the same time, the dramatic contrasts and complex mark making aims to convey a note of gravity.

Farewell Commander Commander Chad Gillies has left the Port Stephens Hunter Police District following two and a half years service as Commander.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey will be taking over the role.

Detective Superintendent Humphrey has experience in the Port Stephens Hunter Police District both as a Detective as a Relieving Commander as well as a Commissioned Officer.

Commander Chad Gillies says that he is an extremely experienced Commander who will bring passion and intimate knowledge of the local area to the role.

“He will be a huge asset to the police and the broader community.

“My sincere thanks to everyone that not only lives here, but people I’ve had the opportunity to engage with over my past two and a bit years here.

In the first stage of the project, six of the artists were briefed to create works that would allow audiences to hear, feel, and even taste the places they’d become familiar with during COVID lockdowns or times of restricted movement.

The soundscapes and 150-word texts produced were then sent to six visual artists to create an artwork in response, without being able to visit in person.

Early in the project’s development, it was agreed that as many people as possible should be able to experience the works created, in turn providing an experience of the environments at their heart.

SPACE gallery director, artist and accessible arts advocate, Allison Reynolds, has worked with the group to provide advice and guidance on creating audio recordings and audio descriptions of the text and visual artworks, as well as providing a range of support in the gallery.

“Art is an experience, and it is so important to me personally and to SPACE and its mission, to ensure all facets of the experience are available to everyone by designing the exhibition with that in mind from day dot,” said Ms Reynolds.

IT’S a great question and very timely at present. Should home sellers list now or wait until spring?

Tradition dictates that spring is the ultimate selling season. After all, the days are usually sunny, the skies are blue and gardens are abundant with flowers.

Consider this though; Winter can also be a great time to list and this seems to be an evolving trend. With the milder winters that we have been experiencing, people are still out seeking property.

The advantage for you as a seller is that you will be avoiding the property glut of spring. A lot of potential sellers are currently preparing their homes for a spring listing. This is great, but there will be a lot of competition for them when the time comes.

So seriously consider being the early bird this winter and attract that house hunting worm.

By Bruce MURRAY, President, Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association THE Progress Association (PA) Management Committee has met since my last update in NOTA and we endorsed spending our recent successful grant from Stronger Communities to purchase new audio visual equipment for the Hawks Nest Hall.

We are also organising a strategic planning session and breakfast meeting for June and I

It has been encouraging to see the MidCoast Council (MCC) responding to some of our ongoing work requests, including car park repairs, outdoor furniture repainting and the removal of the dangerously damaged Winda Woppa viewing platform.

There are many great ideas about what should replace the platform and I am confident of a good outcome.

This month’s big event was the MCC Community Conversations session held at the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Thursday 12 May. Council was represented by Mayor Claire Pontin, Deputy Mayor Alan Tickle, and Councillors Peter Howard and Jeremy Miller.

The General Manager, Adrian Panuccio, the Director Liveable Communities, Mr Paul De Szell, and several other Council executives were also in attendance.

The Mayor opened proceedings with a Welcome to Country.

The first topic was the draft Strategic Plan and a number of key documents which are open for public comment before finalisation.

The Strategic Plan is based on a 2.25 percent rate increase across the LGA. I encourage locals to review these documents and provide feedback about your concerns and priorities.

The PA's upcoming strategic planning will also seek to align with these plans where appropriate.

Mr Paul De Szell provided an update on the Singing Bridge Boat Ramp rebuild which is about to go to tender.

He also advised that the Tea Gardens Pool leak has been repaired and the project work on the disability access ramp will commence shortly.

The current pool operational contract with ‘The Y’ will be renewed for one year while the MCC investigates issues raised around pool management

Other issues raised include: - possible relocation of the skate park; - establishing a fenced “off leash” dog park in a suitable location; and - building a new larger modern community hall.

Most of these matters will remain ongoing with space, design and funding issues to be resolved.

The Progress Association will continue to advocate to the Council and Government to achieve, as well as applying for more grants.

The poor state of our roads was again raised and this safety issue remains firmly on the PA and MCC agenda, as does improving overall traffic planning.

The MCC provided a synopsis of the Development Application process and highlighted some of the legislative and regulatory limitations.

This was followed by some robust community discussion on some of the controversial DAs under consideration or already approved.

Council advised that they cannot rezone Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest, however advised that to date no DA has been submitted for MCC consideration.

Similarly, the unit development at the intersection of Yamba and Booner Streets has been approved by the Land and Environment Court.

I HAVE one word for you.

Headphones.

Preferably not for the driver, who, in my opinion deserves preferential treatment and should be able to enjoy their playlist - a finely curated mix that allows them to go into a calm and possibly nostalgic state, therefore able to deal with lunatics overtaking on the inside lane, backseat arguments, and various other unwanted distractions.

If, however, you'd like to be a bit more democratic in the decisionmaking process, then it should be a playlist that alternates the tastes of each passenger.

What you are left with is an eclectic combination of songs that will keep you all happy for at least 25 percent of the journey, and gritting your teeth for the other 75 percent. There is also the option of silence, or some gentle prodding about career aspirations (which will quickly lead to silence in my experience).

Without fail, though, a calm trip can be achieved if each car member has responsibility for their own listening enjoyment and this is where individual devices, though not ideal for communicating with each other, will ensure that you are all still on speaking terms when you arrive at your destination.

“This plan is important because it will help guide decisions about how the MidCoast should look and feel for people living with

As it turned out there was one interruption to play due to rain, but it was only for about 15 minutes.

The Highest winning score was to determine the winners.

The winners on the grass with

a score of 22 were Peter Cheney, Col Amos, and Neil Kibble.

14 May The semi-finals of the Club Championship Triples were played this afternoon.

In the first game Peter Gurney, Ross Barry, and Cody Ross held all the aces in their match, going on to defeat the team of Barry Goode, Stephen Mount and Anthony Grant 33 – 6.

In the remaining game Scott Fitzalan, Neil Kibble and Ron Webster accounted for Vic Garlick, Merv Mills and Ron Green 25 – 12.

15 May As the grass green was being prepared for the final of the Club Championship Triples, the Sunday bowlers were having a great time on the synthetic green.

The team of John Moore, Carol Haydon and Rick Aslaub won the day with the lowest winning margin.

With the skies now taking on a dismal overcast the final of the Club Championship Triples

proceeded with the anticipation of a great match.

On paper there is just nothing between the teams of Peter Gurney, Ross Barry and Cody Ross and their opponents, Scott Fitzalan, Neil Kibble, and Ron Webster.

And so, it was to be.

As publicity Officer I am quite privileged to watch many great games over the years and this one was right up there with the best.

Nip and tuck bowls all the way to Scott Fitzalan, leading for his team with bowls in the head consistently and the super touch of his opponent, Peter Gurney, just great to watch.

The seconds and skips were equally matched and at no time could the great gallery predict a winner.

Tied at 19-19 with just a few ends remaining it was there for the taking and with heads crowded with so many bowls at each end it required great skill and precision bowling from the skips not to give away shots.

It was the Cody Ross team that eventually eased away to take the title after 23 absorbing ends 21-18.

Congratulations to them and their opponents on a great game played in a wonderful spirit.

By Lynda RICHARDS NOT much to report on this week regarding bowls, unfortunately the wet weather impeded play on Tuesday 10 May reducing the games to just 13 ends 2 games and 14 ends in the other.

Pam Gilchrist, Ingrid Luck, Dawn May and Sandra Leisemann on the 5th end hit the front and stayed there defeating Chrissy Buddle, Jan Coomer, Jean Glover and Karen green 14 v 8.

The other fours game Lyn Nightingale, Wendy Jones, Lynda Richards and Karen McPhie v Liv Everingham, Deyonne Page, Judy McGavock and Robyn Beaumont resulted in a 11 all draw.

A win to Sheila Rattray, Sheril Johnson and Pat Baker 13 v Christine Fossey, Judi Polak and Dale Winter 11.

The winners on the day were Pam, Ingrid, Dawn and Sandra.

Thursday 12 May was to be RSL Pairs Trophy Day which yet again had to be cancelled due to rain, a new date for this yet to be rescheduled.

On Friday 13 May Robyn Beaumont, Karen McPhie and Deyonne Page joined with other “coast” bowlers to compete in the annual City to Coast Challenge, hosted by Raymond Terrace bowling Club.

Congratulations to the Coast Side who won the challenge 139 – 126 and rinks 5 to 2.

Coming Events: Tuesday 17 May Round One of The Club Championship Fours, social bowls as usual during the playing of this Championship.
