By Doug CONNOR ON April 16, the Pindimar/ Tea Gardens and North Arm Cove Rural Fire Brigades are conducting the RFS Sheargold Charity Golf Day hosted by the Hawks Nest Golf Club, raising much needed funds for essential brigade equipment.

“The funds raised will assist with equipment and projects not supplied by the RFS,” said Brigade Captain David Bright.

“As brigades, we are supplied with vehicles, PPE and some essential equipment.

“Any further requirements we need to fundraise for, currently we are in need of 14 new radios, which is a costly exercise.

“Because we have three large vehicles housed at Tea Gardens Station we need to straighten the concrete apron to avoid possible injury or damage to vehicles or station, that’s an expense of $7,000.

THE long awaited upgrade to Tea Gardens Slipway finally commenced on 9 March 2021.

The initial site set-out for the upgrade was the first priority along with temporary fencing of the work area to make it safe for the passing public.

Upgrading the facilities is an initiative by the Tea Gardens Slipway Association Incorporated to improve the slipway’s environmental compliance.

This is to ensure that the slipway can comply with all environmental legislation concerning marine slipway’s operations and all standards well into the future.

Paul Bendy, the Association President, said, “The upgrade will result in the slipway being extended to ensure it is clear of the tidal zone so as all waste water can be collected, treated and lawfully disposed.”.

He went on to say that at this stage the planned works are expected to be completed in early July.

“At the time, speaking with the Golf Club it was decided to make it an annual event.

The spate of incidents in the area prompted Council, along with National Parks and Wildlife Services and Local Land Services to begin surveillance of the group, where it was deemed that their behaviour had escalated to an unacceptable public risk.

Council follows an adopted dingo management procedure that is a risk management model based on the highly successful program in place on Fraser Island.

"We are all really disappointed that it has come to this," said Council's Senior Ecologist, Mat Bell.

“During the response

planning phase, many options were considered including trapping and relocation in the wild or relocation to a sanctuary.

“Relocations were prevented due to the effect of the biosecurity legislation (dingoes are considered “wild dogs” under the legislation) and the lack of the time required to pursue appropriate licensing and administrative arrangements due to the escalating risk management situation.

"We know that dingoes can and should be allowed to live around the Hawks Nest area, but human intervention - while those feeding them may think they're being kind - is what has caused the dangerous change in this pack's behaviour."

Mat explained that when dingoes are fed by

humans, the territory where this frequently occurs becomes worth defending and sometimes within days they may become territorial and exhibit increased aggressions against those they perceive as a threat.

"It's imperative that the community gets behind this important message and please, do not approach or feed the dingoes.

"We cannot have this continue, ultimately it's the dingoes that suffer," Mat said.

“This is really emotionally challenging, it doesn’t come about unless these dingos are fed.

“The big take home for Council is we have to prevent the feeding of dingos and look at compliance and taking action against people that do,” he said.

OPERATION "Rural Roads" was conducted last Saturday 13 February 2021 by police from the Port StephensHunter Police District.

The operation consisted of General Duties and Highway Patrol police conducting high visibility patrols of the highway, Karuah, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

During the operation 563 random breath tests, and 7 random drug tests were completed.

A 35 year old man was detected driving with

the low range of prescribed alcohol in his blood for which he received a court attendance notice and his licence was suspended.

A 45 year old man was charged with driving with the mid-level of prescribed alcohol in his blood, his license was also suspended.

A 20 year old man returned a positive drug test whilst driving, his license was suspended for 24 hours and the drug matter to be investigated further when results are returned to police from the lab.

A 42 year old male was issued with a court attendance notice for driving whilst disqualified, and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

Numerous infringement notices were issued for speeding and seatbelt offences.

These operations are conducted to try and keep our roads a safer place, by detecting irresponsible drivers, and taking the appropriate action to hopefully educate them.

How to help a friend through separation

Influx of Donations Enhances Karuah RSL DURING the recent renovations of Karuah RSL Club, substantial changes were made to the Club’s memorabilia display facilities.

Karuah RSL Sub-Branch, the returned and exservice section of the Club, are the custodians and caretakers of the local area’s military history, and the records of service of local veterans.

The displays include such artefacts as medals, photos, uniforms, hats, helmets and other articles of military history and local significance.

After the reopening of the club, a large number of local residents have seen the improved display facilities and have contributed a large amount of new memorabilia, including a World War 2 fighter pilots uniform with medal ribbons, a Korean War Brigadiers uniform, and a wide ranging number of other uniforms from Vietnam, Afghanistan, East Timor, Peacekeeping, Women’s Services and current uniforms.

The sub Branch has now commenced a major project that will see these mounted into individual display cabinets and placed on a strategic wall in the Club.

Another significant donation was a private collection of historical military aircraft from Herb Mathews of Tea Gardens.

SHAVING one’s hair makes a bold statement.

For the World’s Greatest Shave, it’s a pledge to raise funds towards research into leukaemia, a group of blood cancers.

Leukemia is diagnosed in more than 3700 Australians per year and has a 62% five-year survival rate.

Bulahdelah resident Aleesha Ray, along with her husband Ash Ray, who is a local police officer, and his colleague Trevor McLeod, who also lives in Bulahdelah, will be braving the shave on 20 March.

“I have always wanted to do it [World’s Greatest Shave] and just decided that this year would be the year,” Mrs Ray told Myall Coast News Of The Area.

“My husband thought it would be fun if he got involved too and we roped in Trevor, who is also a local police officer.”

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic impacting events, including the regular Bulahdelah

q Aleesha Ray, Ash Ray and Trevor McLeod will be braving the shave on 20 March to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation.

Blue Light discos which she and her husband run, Mrs Ray knew that The Leukaemia Foundation was having a hard time with fundraising efforts due to lockdowns and wanted to help.

“We are very community minded,” stated Mrs Ray. Mr Ray approached the Bulahdelah branch of the Country Women’s Association, and they were only too happy to help with the fundraising efforts by baking slices and cakes to sell on the day.

Mrs Ray is tying her hair into small pigtails, and for a gold coin donation, members of the public can snip one off.

Bulahdelah Country Women’s Association will provide a cake stall and a sausage sizzle, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Leukemia Foundation.

The action kicks off at 10am, 20 March at Wade Park, Crawford Street, Bulahdelah near the CWA building.

Attendants are reminded to stay COVID safe by physical distancing and not attending if unwell.

By Doug CONNOR IN September 2020, Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens resident Peter Stenson raised $5500 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, cycling over 200km in about 14 days as part of the Tour De Kids.

Funds raised by Peter and his co-riders went towards supporting sick Aussie kids.

Peter’s impressive cycling and fundraising effort, came just months after he was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer called mesothelioma.

Of the $5,500 raised, $5000 was donated by residents of Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens.

On Friday 12 March, Peter presented the award he received from the Starlight Kids Foundation for his efforts to Andy Docherty from the Palm Lake Resort, Tea Gardens Bar Committee.

The award will be hung in the Promenade where residents meet regularly for social and sporting activity.

Peter was keen to thank his fellow residents for all their support.

“In September 2020 the kind residents of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest and in particular, residents from Palm Lake Resort generously donated a significant $5,500.00,” said Peter.

“I was awarded a medal for their great efforts in addition to those kind residents that

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is there to recognise the lack of equality that women experience across the globe.

The first International Women’s Day event was held in 1911 with Australia celebrating the event first in 1928.

The day is one which celebrates women's achievements, raises awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female focused charities.

The North Arm Cove International Women’s Day fundraiser was a very successful event once again, raising over $2000 for women disadvantaged because of poverty, domestic violence and limited education opportunities.

Jan Peeters told News Of The Area, “This is the 23rd year this fundraiser has been held

at North Arm Cove and over the last 22 years has donated $75000 to International Women Australia, an amazing effort for such a small community.”

The International Women’s Day theme for 2021 is #CHOOSETOCHALLENGE. “So let’s choose to challenge,” she said.

Due to COVID-19 the numbers were restricted for this years event and tickets sold out very quickly.

Among the guests was a long-time supporter of this event, Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens, who is passionate about equality for women.

Impact Of Dingoes Seen From Space

By Marian SAMPSON DID you ever wonder what happens when the apex predator is removed from the ecosystem?

A recent study by the University of NSW shows that the impact of removing dingos from the landscape can be seen from space.

Following 32 years worth of satellite images it is clear that the areas inhabited by dingos have better long term growth when compared to the areas without dingoes.

While the research area studies imagery with sitebased field research on both sides of the Dingo Fence in the Strzelecki Desert the impact of Dingoes in the local environment will have similar benefits.

“Dingoes indirectly affect vegetation by controlling numbers of kangaroos and small mammals,” says Professor Mike Letnic, senior

author of the study and researcher at UNSW’s Centre for Ecosystem Science.

“When dingoes are removed, kangaroo numbers increase, which can lead to overgrazing.

“This has followon effects to the entire ecosystem.”

The Dingo Fence, which spans across parts of Queensland, NSW and South Australia, was erected in the 1880s to keep dingoes away from livestock.

At 5600 kilometres long, it’s one of the longest structures in the world.

NASA and United States Geological Survey’s Landsat program – which has been taking continuous images of the area since 1988 – has made landscape-wide analysis possible.

“The differences in grazing pressure on each side of the fence were so pronounced they could be

seen from space,” says Prof.

Letnic.

The satellite images were processed and analysed by D Adrian Fisher, a remote sensing specialist at UNSW Science and lead author of the study.

He says the vegetation’s response to rainfall is one of the key differences between areas with, and without, dingoes.

“While rainfall caused vegetation to grow on both sides of the fence, we found that vegetation in areas without dingoes didn’t grow as much – or cover as much land – as areas outside the fence.”

Dingos are the Australian native Apex Predator.

Apex predators play an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of an ecosystem.

Removing them from an area can trigger a domino effect for the rest of the

ecosystem – a process called trophic cascade.

For example, an increase in kangaroo populations can lead to overgrazing, which in turn reduces vegetation and damages the quality of the soil.

Less vegetation can hinder the survival of smaller animals, like the critically endangered Plains Wanderer.

The restoration of ‘Gymea’

TWO years of hard work has paid off for Karuah locals Michael Rapa and Michael Taylor, who have recently completed the restoration of ‘Gymea’, a historic Restricted Class 21 sailboat which has spent the past decade in a state of disrepair.

Built in 1922 by James Hayes and Sons at Careening Cove, ‘Gymea’ competed in numerous Forster Cups between 1925 and 1953, finishing second and third on multiple occasions.

The Forster Cup was an interstate competition that began in 1922 and was raced for by the 21 Foot Restricted Class until 1955.

At the time it was the q

most important sailing event in the country.

When opportunity presented itself, the pair of Michaels jumped at the opportunity to bring the boat, made from Cedar and New Zealand Kauri, back to life.

“It has a very colourful history, it was owned by multiple owners in Sydney before it found its way to North Arm Cove where it eventually got abandoned on the bottom there,” said Mr Taylor.

“A friend of ours, it ended up in front of his house, so he pulled it out of the water.

“He knew of the boat, and got in touch with Michael Rapa who is a boat builder from up here.

together and restore it,” said Taylor.

Michael Rapa was born into a family of boat builders in Malta.

Michael Taylor has spent his adult life tinkering with and restoring vintage cars.

“He (Michael Rapa) is a very clever gentleman,” said Taylor.

“I raced motorbikes and restore cars, so this project was a bit of a learning curve for me.

“I have played with boats over the years but nothing like this,” said Taylor.

In the past weekends, ‘Gymea’ made its long awaited return to the waterways of Karuah.

With ‘Gymea’ back on the water, Michael and Michael

showed News Of The Area the finished product and spoke about their process.

“The first thing we did was the deck, it was a bit of a mess, but the timbers were good,” said Michael Rapa.

“We removed all the brass screws and replaced them with trunnels, which are wooden nails basically.

“Then we removed all the paint from the hull itself to find what damage there was hidden underneath.

“We changed all the damaged planks, then we did the inside,” said Mr Rapa.

At 99-years old, the ongoing protection of ‘Gymea’ is the priority.

“The removal of apex predators can have far-reaching effects on ecosystems that manifest across very large areas,” says Prof. Letnic.

“These effects have often gone unnoticed because large predators were removed from many places a long time ago.

“The Australian dingo fence – which is a sharp divide between dingo and non-dingo areas – is a rare opportunity to observe

the indirect role of an apex predator.”

“Non-photosynthesizing vegetation has a different reflectance spectrum to photosynthesizing vegetation,” says Dr Fisher.

The satellite imagery and site analysis clearly showed dingoes played a central role.

“There were clear differences in landscape on either side of the dingo fence,” says Dr Fisher.

“Dingoes may not be the whole explanation, but they are a key part of it.”

“Having the boat in the water continuously is not good and having it on dry land in the sun is no good, so we built the insulated shed.

“It is then finished in linseed oil mixed with turpentine for its protection, which we reapply several times throughout the year.

“This is the old-fashioned way of doing it but it works.”

Celebrating its centenary year in 2022, the pair from Karuah are keen to see Gymea’s legacy live on and are playing their part in continuing maritime customs of the time.

Traditionally, each boat built at the time had a coin from the current year placed

underneath the mast.

“This one, has the original coin in there, but it is too corroded, and I cannot see what it is.

“I know it is a penny from the size, but we can’t make out the details.

“I have found a 1922 penny, and it will go on the face of the mask.”

The 21 Foot Restricted Class were introduced to Australia by GovernorGeneral Lord Forster, a keen sailor who saw the boats as a means of promoting yachting after the end of World War One, in which Lord Forster had lost his sons.

With the ‘Gymea’ project complete, we are excited to see what Michael and Michael will turn their hands to next.

Basil Conditsis awarded the Gold Cross of St Andrew

By Annette YARNOLD THE Gold Cross of St Andrew is the highest award of recognition given by the Greek Orthodox Church, usually to lay people who have offered lifelong service to the church.

Tea Gardens resident Basil Conditsis received this prestigious award in January by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa, in an emotion rich ceremony for his service to Saint John the Baptist, Greek Orthodox Church, Parramatta.

Basil was recognized not only for his dedication and magnificent contribution to the church but was also praised for his ethos,

humility, patience and his spirit of cooperation.

Basil and his wife Roula, both of Greek origin, grew up in Egypt before marrying and moving to Australia in 1955.

Basil’s love of drawing led him to acquiring a job at the Waterboard as a draftsman after settling in Sydney.

He had no experience; however, he was an excellent drawer and was willing to learn on the job and teach himself. “When I came to Australia, I taught myself to draw plans.

“The courses cost too much, we didn’t have enough money,” said Basil.

This became a lifelong career for Basil and helped him in becoming a self-taught architect.

He used this knowledge to design and oversee the building of the Greek Orthodox Church on Hassall St, Parramatta.

When Basil and Roula first attended the Hassall St church they were shocked that it was just a small hall, “Because in Egypt the churches were very big and very expensive,” explained Roula.

So, Basil suggested a ‘proper’ church be built for people to congregate and offered to design it and was responsible for overseeing it being built.

“I prayed to God to help me. I did the plans for the church and it only took six months to build and it was finished in 1961,” Basil said.

This was the beginning of Basil’s dedication to the Greek Orthodox Church in Parramatta as well as other Greek Orthodox parishes in Sydney and to the Holy Archdiocese as a whole.

He became President of the Parramatta Church and remained in that position for 20 years and designed five Greek Orthodox

Churches in Sydney and Canberra over many years.

Both Basil and Roula worked hard in their early years in Australia, with Basil working long hours not only at work but also dedicating his spare time to the church overseeing the construction of the buildings and taking his position as President seriously all within a volunteer capacity.

During this time, they managed to save enough to buy a block of land and build their own home in Fairfield.

Basil designed the house and they built it themselves taking six months, however they added onto it over the years until as Roula proudly states “It was like a palace.”

Within this time their family grew and they spent their holidays in Hawks Nest at Jimmy’s Beach, camping in a tent.

On retirement Basil and Roula along with their children Nick, Delis, George and Urania moved to Tea Gardens in 1971.

Basil continued his hand in architecture drawing plans for people building their own homes.

Both Basil and Roula have enjoyed being involved in local community activities such as fishing and bingo and have been members of the Lions and Lioness Clubs, Red Cross as well as volunteering with Meals on Wheels.

For many years they also travelled to Sydney every second weekend to attend church.

This shows the level of dedication they both have to St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Parramatta.

Architecture and The Greek Othodox Church has been Basil’s passion throughout his life and has led him to receive this prestigious award.

Few people have received this very special honour and Basil proudly states, “I have been expecting this award for 60 years, it makes me very happy.”

A scary ferry trip

ROSE Ringuet thought that she and her family were going to have a nice ferry trip back from Nelson bay, but when a horrific storm hit the waters, passengers on the ferry were left fearing for their lives.

After noticing that many of the other passengers on the ferry had not boarded, Rose began to worry about the storm that was quickly approaching.

Joined by her partner, brother and sister, they boarded the ferry alongside with two other passengers and had only just set off,

when the storm began to gain on them.

“I looked at James (the Captain of the ferry) and asked if we would make it back.

“He promised us that he would get everyone back to shore safe,” said Rose Ringuet.

“The storm started getting worse, and the ferry began to go side to side, virtually kissing the water on each side.

“The waves were horrible and we crashed over every wave, almost filling the boat with water.

“For a good 25-35 minutes, my family feared for

our lives.

“I had never been in a storm as bad as this was.

“My sister couldn’t swim and my partner has a disability and I began to think that ‘this is it’ and started to plan for the worst,” Rose told News Of The Area.

As the ferry hit the cross water (where the ocean goes into the river), Rose described this as the worst section of the trip with raging waters unlike anything she had ever seen before.

The moment that the ferry reached the shore Rose and her family began to clap and cheer for the captain and even shouted “Hip hip

hooray”.

They could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

They were safe.

“He (James) had control of the ferry the entire time.

MyTime group has run inperson, but due to COVID-19, Playgroup NSW has decided to accommodate to the changing needs of society, and run a virtual version of the group, facilitated by Hunter Prelude.

the lady members and committee who provided morning tea early each day and offered assistance when needed.

On Tuesday evening prior to Presentation the raffle draw was held with prizes donated by local businesses.

This was very well supported and we raised $2500 for the Westpac Helicopter.

We are very appreciative of the local businesses that

continually support us and the community.

The names of those who supported this year’s classic will be on the club’s website.

An event like this would not be successful without the help of many.

The ladies committee put in many hours to ensure its smooth running and many of the lady members assisted during the event.

The support from the staff in the Pro shop, led by Andrew, had many positive comments from visiting players as did the work done by Ben and the green

staff who ensured that the course was presented immaculately.

We appreciated the effort of the cleaners, bar staff, café and restaurant staff and the very supportive office staff.

Also, the many volunteers who willingly helped over the two days.

10 MARCH It was a random draw for partners today in Wednesday's gala Triples.

Fifty-two bowlers participated.

The winners were Harry Parker, Gary Wynne and Mark Nightingale on a one-end countback with 19 points.

The lucky losers were Bob Peady, John Moore and Bob Weir on 16 points.

The lucky number barrel draw went to John Payne and our thanks to “the Garden Eatery” for their continued support of this voucher.

13 March The first round of the Newcastle District Pennants was played today with some mixed results.

The First National grade 4 side travelled to Raymond Terrace and they pulled off a

terrific result winning by just two shots in a nail-biter of a game.

They won 57-55.

The First National grade 5 side played our near neighbors, Karuah, at home and had a disappointing result, losing the Master Board by 10 shots 54-64.

One local team scored a win but fate was not kind to the other two.

The First National Grade 6 side played Stockton at home and recorded a narrow loss 56-59.

Two teams recorded wins but could not make up the deficit.

The First National Grade 7 side had a tough baptism of fire when they were ambushed by the “soldiers” at the Point.

I’m told, players had difficulty handling the slick pace of the carpeted green but

COMMERCIAL VERSUS RESIDENTIAL? “We’re thinking of dipping our toe in the investment property pool. Residential or commercial….which do you believe is the better investment?”

IT’S definitely a great time to invest in property, but which path you follow is really dependent on your personal circumstances. Residential is usually the ‘go-to’, resonating strongly simply because everyone needs somewhere to live and with conversations surrounding housing affordability, the demand/ supply ratio pivots towards renting. Consequently, there tends to be a more emotional element connected to residential property investment. But commercial properties also have a number of pro’s including longer leasing periods, ‘outgoings’ such as Council rates, paid by the tenant, locked-in rent increases which is great for landlord cashflow, lower maintenance and greater opportunities for capital growth. But of course with higher reward comes higher risk including potentially longer vacancy periods, the requirement for a higher deposit – something that takes first-time investors by surprise –and should a large maintenance job appear, it could be pricey. Both can offer great rewards, particularly if you’re looking to invest long-term. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 9 March: The start of Pennant Season, 2021.

Pennant games are two teams of Fours, this constitutes a side.

Both teams need to have a win to gain the maximum 5 points.

This year Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club have entered one Grade 2 side and two Grade 4 sides, (Yellow and Blue).

Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker are one component of the Grade 2 side and the other is Jean Glover, Lynne Green, Dale Winter and Maynie Roberts.

This side had their first match at Lemon Tree Passage with Pat's team winning 19 v 18 and Maynie's losing 25 v 12, overall gaining 1 point.

Grade 4 Yellow bowlers had a home game bowling against Karuah.

This side is Sheila Rattray, Jan Coomer, Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas their other half are Lyn Nightingale, Irene Roberts, Dawn Jones and Judy McGavock.

Unbelievably both of these games ended in a draw, 2.5 points to TGWBC and Karuah.

Moving on to Grade 4 Blue, they also had a home game against Stockton Red. Sheril Johnson, Christine Fossey, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie had a loss 18 v 8.

Lynda Richards, Judi Polak, Bette Saillard and Robyn Beaumont winning 31 v 17 resulting in 4 points added to this sides scoreboard.

Thursday 11 March: A home game for Grade 2 v Kotara, a great result here a win for both our teams.

Maynie's by 2 shots, 18 v16 and Pat's by 4 shots, 18 v 14, a wonderful 5 points to be added to their tally.

My neighbours’ cat prefers living with me.

It suns itself on my deck, follows me in the garden and if the door is open, and curls up on my lap and falls asleep.

The neighbours are at work all day and so they are unaware of this behaviour.

The thing is, I’ve become very attached to the cat, and I feel as though it feels the same about me.

Last night when it was being called to come in at night, it hid in my shed, and ended up on a little bed I’d made it in the hallway.

Should I speak to the neighbours about adopting it more formally?

Mrs Tiffany B. Dear Tiffany, I think you must realise that you have, in fact, turned into a cat napper, and I don’t mean the type that curls up in front of the midday movie for a little power sleep.

I have no doubt that the cat enjoys your company during the day when it is lonely, but you have definitely encouraged the behaviour by allowing it to sleep on your lap during the day and in its own little bed that you’ve made it at night.

Your poor neighbours were probably frantic that their feline friend had gone missing, and there you were, holding it hostage, complete with a crocheted rug and a little mouse toy no doubt.

Did you feed it some sardines or tuna as an added enticement?

You can’t just adopt other people’s pets, Tiffany.

Even if they show you affection.

I would recommend that you contact the various pet rescue facilities in the local area, and perhaps adopt a cat that doesn’t have an owner and is looking for the sort of love and attention that you are able to provide.

You also might like to let your neighbours know that their cat is roaming around when they are at work and quite possibly enjoying not only your hospitality, but also the birds and lizards in the local area.

Stroud’s coaching duo

By Victoria HENDERSON RETURNING local women’s rugby league coach Simon Chappell has a new coaching partner at the Stroud Raiders.

Steve Boyton will be joining him to lead the men’s team.

It’s hoped that this new coaching duo will bring victory to both teams as they prepare for the coming season.

both teams then fell victim to the circumstances of the COVID season in 2020.

It’s hoped that 2021 will be the culmination of proven success and lessons well learned.

The players are certainly enthusiastic about their prospects.

They put this enthusiasm down to the passion and expertise their two coaches bring.

“They’re both amazing, they both have a lot of experience.” Hannah Borg,

one of the players said.

“It’s definitely a family club.

“Steve’s son plays with the men’s team and Simon’s wife and kids play for the women’s team.

“We have a lot of passion and heart and we carry that onto the field.”

The biggest lesson the team learned from last year was that there is always more preparation to be done.

With limited opportunity to train together they found it difficult to maintain their fitness.

The thinking is that the men’s team will take away some of the faster pace of the women’s game.

The women’s game is expected to benefit from the maturity of the male competition.

THE 35th Ladies Golf Classic was held over Monday and Tuesday 1 and 2 March with over 250 players representing approximately 40 visiting clubs.

The very popular event commenced on Sunday evening with a Meet and Greet held at the Hawks Nest golf club to welcome players and visitors. While enjoying a drink, nibblies and the company of others the ladies were given information needed for the smooth running of the tournament.

Monday’s event began as the sun was rising and continued till late in the afternoon with 254 ladies competing in both Stroke and Stableford competitions.

All enjoyed their day and were very impressed with the presentation of our amazing course.

Many returned to the club

on Monday night for dinner and entertainment.

The presentation of the club and the table settings looked amazing in the gold and black theme.

Thank you, Sonya for your expertise.

Even though the usual dance floor couldn’t be used the ladies were very innovative with their ‘seat’ dancing and thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the friendship of others.

It was great to have the club filled with 205 visiting ladies and lots of laughter.

Tuesday’s golf ran smoothly with the ladies returning for another day of competition.

Players commented on how great it was to have our men volunteers on the course as spotters and bunker rakers.
