‘Saving men’s lives’ is the catch cry of the campaign, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Warners Bay in collaboration with local Rotary clubs and other community groups.
Twice a year, every year since 2017, the MHERV heads out to the backblocks of NSW seeking out the menfolk who haven’t seen the inside of a doctor’s rooms for years.
These are the blokes who drop dead in a paddock because nobody saw it coming.
With the support of the Royal Freemasons Benevolent Institution (RFBI), Rotary saw the appeal in the convenience of the van coming to the community with a Registered Nurse onboard to undertake free basic check-ups for ‘blokes’, and off it set, now offering ladies a free health check, too.
“The van is coming to Wade Park, corner of Mead and Crawford Streets, Bulahdelah, on Tuesday, 29 November from 10.30am – 3.30pm,” said Bulahdelah Men’s Shed President David Flynn.
“While in Bulahdelah, MHERV is proudly supported by the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed.”
The purpose-built MHERV van is staffed by male nurse Bill Power.
Bill has the knack of being able to relax even the most stressed clients.
The free-of-charge health screening service covers blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.
The consultation takes about ten minutes and provides immediate results, giving participants feedback that the organisation says helps to improve health outcomes for men.
During the confidential consultation, Bill takes the opportunity to also chat about
other health related concerns, including state of mind.
This service is offered in a relaxed, confidential and informal setting under Covid-safe guidelines.
The nurse submits a daily report to the Program Management team at Rotary Club of Warners Bay from which statistics are gathered.
Over the last four years the results have averaged approximately four percent of patients who have required urgent
attention, around 40 percent are advised to follow up on something with their GP in the next week and 56 percent are encouraged to keep up the good work.
Over the past four years the van has seen nearly 11,000 people so it has potentially saved over four hundred people from a severe health event.

been a privilege to serve people in this electorate over the past twelve years.
"I have fought for funding and opportunities in this electorate over the past decade," said Mr Bromhead.
"Often in Sydney they forget about rural and regional areas and it's about advocating for the best outcomes in our area.”
Mr Bromhead also shared a few stories that illustrated that there is sometimes humour in parliament.
"On one occasion when I had broken my leg it was difficult to enter on the government side of the house so I entered through the opposition's side.
“As you can imagine there was a look of horror on their faces.
“I simply explained that 'I thought you guys needed a bit of help',” commented Mr Bromhead, to much laughter from the audience.
Many spoke highly of Mr Bromhead through the evening.
On a lighter note, MP Bronwyn Taylor, Deputy Leader of the National Party in New South Wales said, "I'm going to miss his barbeques.”
Additionally, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie and the Deputy Premier, the Hon. Paul Toole, spoke highly of Mr
Bromhead's contribution to the electorate and the wider community.
Mr Bromhead’s recent valedictory speech in parliament received a standing ovation from both sides of the house where he concentrated on achievements for his electorate and his various roles as parliamentary secretary and the advocating for the wider community.
We wish him well in retirement.

Parental Responsibility and Decision Making For Children
Parental responsibility is defined under the Family Law Act as all the duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which, by law, parents have in relation to their children.
In reality it often encompasses major long term decision making for issues such as the child’s name, health, education, culture and religion. Parental responsibility is not the same as deciding who a child lives or spends time with.
Without an Order of the Court, each parent has parental responsibility for a child of the relationship until the child reaches the age of 18. A breakdown in the relationship, or one of the parents starting a new relationship, does not in itself affect parental responsibility.
If parents do separate and ask the Court to intervene, the ‘starting point’ is that parents
ought to consult each other concerning major issues affecting the children. As such, there is a presumption under the Family Law Act that it is in the child’s best interests for his or her parents to have equal shared parental responsibility, however this presumption may not apply if there have been incidents of family violence or child abuse. Equal shared parental responsibility requires that the parents make decisions about major long term issues for the children jointly, however it does not cover ‘day-to-day’ decision making.
If you have questions about parental responsibility please contact a member of our Separation, Family and Relationships Team.

Seniors’ Stories a Smash
THE recent release of Seniors’ Stories Volume 8 highlights the many stories that older folks have to offer to reflect on their lives.
This year's theme was 'Celebrating Diversity’.
100 writers’ works are chosen for inclusion for the publication, taken from submissions from the NSW Government’s Seniors’ Stories writing competition.
The ceremony was held
at NSW Parliament House and about a third of the writers were representative of regional and rural NSW.
The awards were attended by an enthusiastic crowd of writers who told their personal stories.
Colleen Parkinson, organiser of the event, from the Fellowship of Australian Writers, pointed out that it was not a literary contest.
"It's about telling a story, a good Aussies tale,”
said Ms Parkinson.
Throughout the process, it was stressed that it was about passing on seniors’ stories to the next generation.
"We all have our stories and our contribution to adding to future generations is important," Ms Parkinson said.
Local recipient John Sahyoun said, "Wow, this has been the fourth time I have been published in this Seniors’ anthology.
“It’s great to be published as you are up against literally hundreds
of others and the judges don't know who you are so I'm guessing it's on the quality of your submission," said Mr Sahyoun.
Ms Parkinson provided a key piece of advice to future entrants.
"There were many stories about bushfires and other current issues," she said.
"When you have so many you just have to pick the best few.
“Also, avoid political commentary as it's about a story that will resonate with others, rather than
your take on current things," said Ms Parkinson.
Mr Sahyoun said it was important to "write about what you know personally”.
“Tell the story that others may be interested in knowing.
“Stick to the theme and try to think outside the box.
“Watch your spelling and punctuation as this is what the judges first notice.
“You only have a one in six opportunity of making it so don't leave anything to chance.”
An audio transcription of the published stories
will be released soon on the web.
Seniors Card holders are eligible to enter each year's contest and the organisers encourage seniors to share their personal stories with our current and future generations.
As of this week, John Sahyoun will be rejoining News Of The Area Myall Coast as a contributor reporter, having written for the paper in years gone by.
Look out for John’s stories in this and upcoming editions.
Tea Gardens boxer hits hard for his first amateur bout
By Jewell DRURY
TEA Gardens boxer, seventeen-year-old Zane Pietsch, has his first amateur fight on Saturday, November 19 at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.
Having just finished his HSC at Hunter River High, Zane is primed for his first amateur fight on the weekend.
Zane works locally and was born and bred in Tea Gardens.
His interest in boxing first began several years ago when he joined the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Boxing Club at the age of twelve.
The club began in 2017 with founder Phil Wallis, who had 30 years experience in boxing at the
Muswellbrook PCYC.
Local Policeman Rob Wiley and Steve Pietsch then joined the coaching team, making the perfect trifecta for the youth of Hawks Nest and the surrounding areas.
“I’m feeling excited and confident in the lead up to the fight and have been training hard in preparation, in and out of the gym, for the fight,” Zane told News Of
The Area.
“I highly recommend Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Boxing Club as it is a very open and welcoming gym to young people,” Zane said.
“Our gym helps kids learn a lot of valuable skills that are not only used in the sport of boxing but in all aspects of life,” Zane continued.
The coaches are
all volunteers and are committed to supporting the youth.
“We are thankful to the local community for their donations as it has allowed us to purchase a boxing ring and boxing equipment for the youth of our area,” Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Boxing Club founder Phil Wallis said.
The boxing gym operates
Monday and Wednesdays from 5 - 6 pm out of the Hawks Nest Scout Hall.
Boys and girls from nine to eighteen years of age are encouraged to come along and learn new skills.
Zane Pietsch’s first amateur fight was at the Nelson Bay Bowling and Recreation Club as a part of the ‘War On The Water’ Clash of the Codes, November 19, 2022.
Tickets are available at the Club for $60 each.

Christmas toy appeal at Craft Centre
THE Myall Community Art and Craft Centre are again holding their annual Christmas toy appeal to aid the Salvation Army.
“In previous years this has been well supported by the local community,”
said Susan Burns, Myall Community Art and Craft Centre.
A Christmas tree, located in Room 1 at the Craft Centre, is waiting to be surrounded by toys to be distributed to local families
in need.
“The Salvation Army will be picking up the toys in early December, so call in and put the toys under the tree,” Susan said.
“They are in need of new toys, not gift wrapped as
they need to be sorted into age groups for distribution.
“I am sure your generosity will be appreciated by the recipients of your gifts.”
The Salvation Army is also accepting donations of
gifts for men, women and children of all ages, and unwrapped non-perishable food items.
“If you haven’t visited the Craft Centre before, call in and check out the different craft groups on
Remembrance Day commemorated at Anzac Park
EACH year, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, we pause for Remembrance Day to honour and commemorate all Australians who have served our nation in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
In particular, we remember the more than 103,000 Australian servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation.
It was no different this year at Tea Gardens, with the traditional Remembrance Day Service held at Anzac Park on Friday, November 11.
Tea Gardens RSL subBranch secretary Jenny RossHenry told News Of The Area, “We had a great crowd attend our commemoration.
“It was especially good having a Catafalque Party, provided by 77 Squadron RAAF Medowie, back after three years of Covid.
“The Myall Melodians
were also welcomed back with their stirring renditions of the were also welcomed back with their stirring renditions of the traditional hymns,” Jenny said.
Ahead of Remembrance
Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles MP, acknowledged Defence personnel, both current and former serving, for their service, courage and sacrifice.
“Their bravery and valour remains an example for all Australians to live by,” he said.
“Thanks must also go to the families and loved ones, whose support has given them the strength to carry out this service.”
2022 marks the 80th anniversary of a number of battles for Australians stationed in Australia and in the Pacific including the Bombing of Darwin, the Fall of Singapore and the Kokoda
Campaign.
“I recently had the honour of walking a small section of the Kokoda track in Papua New Guinea, from Ower’s Corner to Goldie River,” said Mr Marles.
“While difficult, this trek paled in comparison to the experiences of our soldiers who fought on the track, and was a stark reminder of the sacrifices of our forefathers,

Free Clinic Bus supporting locals in times of need
By Marian SAMPSON
FOR those living on the Myall Coast, access to infrastructure like hospitals is often a challenge.
Thankfully, for those in need of medical attention the area has a Free Clinic Bus.
Jan Peeters told News Of The Area, “This service is run by volunteers, a door to door service for medical, optical and dental appointments.”
The bus operates
daily taking people to appointments in Raymond Terrace, Newcastle and Maitland.
If you are in need of transport to medical appointments call 0403 657 195 9am and 12 noon to make a booking.
“We service Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove and Karuah.”
Swan Bay resident Tracy Wolter has used the bus for life saving treatment.
At 43 years of age Tracy heard what she describes as
four sickening words: ‘We found a mass’.
“I have never felt more scared or anxious than at that moment; I was diagnosed with a brain tumor on my right parietal/ occipital lobe.”
Tracy had surgery to remove the tumor and was diagnosed with a grade 2 Oligodendroglioma.
Tracy has two beautiful children who had already lost their Dad in a fatal motorcycle crash seven years earlier, when they
were just two and six years old.
After Tracy’s first craniotomy she began surveillance MRI scanningit was the start of the new normal.
Four years later after a routine MRI, Tracy was told the tumor was back.
Surgery revealed a Oligodendroglioma grade 3 and due to this Tracy was no longer able to drive.
However her treatment regime was to undertake daily radiation treatment for six weeks.
In stepped the clinic bus, who Radiation Oncology
nurse sent the list of daily appointment times.
“I would receive a phone call with the pickup time and each morning right on time the bus would arrive.
“During this time I met various wonderful drivers who volunteer their time, each with their own stories.”
Often there were other passengers on board, taking their own journey through the roller coaster of the medical world.
“The driver/passengers would listen if I wanted to talk, they’d initiate conversation and also on rough days stay silent so I
not just at Kokoda, but across all conflicts in which Australia has been involved.”
The Australian Defence Force currently has approximately 2,500 personnel deployed on operations overseas and within Australia, actively protecting Australia and our region.
Lest we forget.

“Some days we had time for coffee, scones (morning tea date) while waiting on other passengers' appointments.
“Overall The Clinic Bus gave me something fun each day to look forward to.
“The Clinic Bus was a great distraction from what I was facing each day and made me feel as though I was not alone.
“It allowed me to pick up necessities while waiting on other passengers at Raymond Terrace - what a great bloke Merv is!”
Tracy says that she could not have done it without the Free Clinic Bus and thanks everyone involved.

Calls For Dementia Education
By Marian SAMPSON
DEMENTIA is a devastating disease which causes the loss of cognitive functioning - thinking, remembering, and reasoning.
The Myall Coast has the highest percentage of aged residents in NSW.
In 2022, there are up to 487,500 Australians living with dementia.
Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2058, leading to calls for greater training in the sector to accompany the new pay increase for aged care workers.
Dementia Australia welcomes the Fair Work Commission’s decision to deliver a pay increase for workers in the aged care sector who care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Dementia Australia Chief Operating Officer Anthony Boffa said that while pay and conditions for aged care workers are important, equally important is investing in the skills and capacity they have to support people living with dementia.
“The pay increase of at least fifteen percent for aged care workers in direct care roles is an important step in supporting and protecting the
aged care workforce, however ensuring a minimum level of compulsory dementia care education across the entire workforce is as important as increasing staffing wages,” Mr Boffa said.
“With 65 percent of all those in residential aged care having a moderate to severe cognitive impairment and 70 percent of the almost half a million Australians with dementia living in the community accessing inhome care, all staff employed and entrusted to provide care must be appropriately trained in dementia care.
“Dementia education leads to fewer high-risk incidents, lower rates
Lunar eclipse over Port Stephens
By Jewell DRURY
PHOTOGRAPHS of the lunar eclipse filled the pages of social media on November 8 but there were none quite as breathtaking as the images captured by Port Stephens photographer Stephen Keating.
Mr Keating regularly shares images of our beautiful blue water paradise through various Facebook community pages, but no one was prepared for the beauty that was seen through his
time lapse photographs as the lunar eclipse crossed Tomaree Headlands between 7pm and midnight.
“I had two weeks to prep for the lunar eclipse and in order to have the perfect focal point, Tomaree Headland and the moon, I had to be at least 1.4 kms away,” Mr Keating told News Of The Area.
“Gan Gan Lookout was the obvious choice to capture the timelapse images,” Mr Keating said.
Mr Keating has been a resident of Corlette for the past thirteen years.
of inappropriate use of medication and more positive staff attitudes and morale, which ultimately results in better service delivery and quality of life for people living with dementia.
“The sooner the whole aged care workforce is accessing appropriate dementia care education and training the sooner we will begin to see the changes needed to improve the health, lifestyle and care outcomes for people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers.
“We know from our work and broad consultation with people living with dementia, their families and carers, that
if we get quality care right for people living with dementia, then there will be quality care for all.
“Dementia Australia looks forward to continuing consultation with the government on embedding compulsory dementia education within the aged care sector, as part of the ongoing development of the National Dementia Action Plan.”
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, ““A fifteen percent pay rise is an incredible outcome for our hard-working aged care workers.
“During the pandemic, aged care workers were on the front line, protecting the community and keeping
vulnerable residents safe.
“They certainly deserve this long-overdue pay increase.
“As our population continues to age, especially in areas like Port Stephens and the Myall Coast, having dementia friendly communities will be increasingly important.
“Since I was elected in 2015, I’ve been a Member of Parliamentary Friends of Dementia, where we work across party lines to help raise awareness of dementia in our communities.
“Dementia Australia is doing incredible work, and I encourage everyone to make use of their resources and learn more about dementia and how to build a dementia friendly community.”
After a long and successful career in television and an addiction to alcohol, Mr Keating moved to Corlette where he took up photography to help keep him focused and on track.
He owes his success to his Mum for buying him his first camera, for being his greatest critic and for always encouraging his passion for photography.
Recently, Stephen put his captured images onto splashbacks and glass panels.
The demand for his images soon flourished
Funding available to conserve War Memorials
COMMUNITY groups are being encouraged to make an application for funds to conserve the state’s community war memorials under round two of the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund.
Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney David Elliott said $125,000 would be
available in round two which commenced on Remembrance Day, with funding available to support the repair, protection and conservation of community war memorials across the state.
“Today we commemorate Remembrance Day, which saw veterans, families and friends gather at local war
memorials to pay respect and honour our veterans,” Mr Elliott said.
“This funding from the state is vitally important as it helps local communities protect our memorials, ensuring the service and sacrifice of our veterans is not forgotten,”
“I encourage community organisations including
memorial trusts, veteran groups and local councils to apply.”
Grants of up to $10,000 are available to help with projects like conservation assessments, honour roll restoration, and repairs to war memorial structures and halls.
Deniliquin RSL subBranch received funding in round 1 of the Community War Memorials Fund, for conservation work to the
with the Tomaree Hospital reception area now hosting a 20 ft long image on glass.
“If you can make a living out of something you love doing, you will never have to work a day in your life and I am thankful I can now do that,” Mr Keating said.
27 November 2022 marks eleven years that Stephen has been alcohol free, owing the man
he is today and his gift of photography to his beautiful Mum, Shirley.
Mr Keating was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019 and during this time his Mum passed away suddenly after suffering a heart attack.
Stephen now lives his life in honor to his Mother and hopes to inspire people by his life’s testimony.

Mr John Harris, Honorary Secretary of the Deniliquin RSL sub-Branch said the grant enabled them to restore the First World War Roll of Honour with the regilding of names of the veterans of Deniliquin who served.

First World War diaries and letters get new life online
EYEWITNESS accounts of the end of the First World War, as recorded in diaries and letters, are now available online as part of a major digitisation project led by the Australian War Memorial.
These diaries and letters give an intimate insight to this globally significant day, as Australians gathered last week to mark Remembrance Day and commemorate the Armistice of the First World War, which was signed at 11 am on 11 November 1918.
“The Memorial has a multitude of original letters and diaries that express how people felt about the signing of the Armistice and the war coming to an end,” Australian War Memorial Research Centre head Robyn Van Dyk said.
“Many of the letters and diaries on the Memorial’s
website record how people reacted to hearing of the end of a very long and horrific war. Some also took part in and recorded various celebrations.
“Many wrote about their relief of not having to fight anymore, for others there was a hint of disbelief.
“Others reflected on the loss of friends and family.”
In one example, Lieutenant Sydney Traill wrote on 11 November 1918, “It was officially announced late tonight that hostilities have ceased as from 11 o’c a.m. today. We knew early in the morning, though.
“No one displayed the slightest enthusiasm and it doesn’t matter a tuppeny dump to me now, whether it goes on or not, the war has done its worst for our family.”
Another example includes eighteen-year-old Australian Private Gallwey who wrote, “London has gone mad and I am intoxicated with joy.”
The First World War collections of diaries and letters are part of the Memorial’s four-year digitisation project.
“Digitisation makes these collections so much more accessible to everyone,” Ms Van Dyk said.
“There are over 14,000 collections that have been digitised including archival records, photographs, film, maps, art posters and objects, all now being progressively published.
“In the past, people had to travel to Canberra and request to view these items which were only able to be viewed from the Reading Room but now you can
access these historic records from home and unlike paper you can zoom into the text and bring up the content in detail.
“Personal collections such as letters and diaries

Community Conversations
By John SAHYOUN
MIDCOAST Council has been engaging with the wider community in our local government area over the past few weeks.
It has allowed locals to find out about Council priorities and for Council to
become aware of local issues of concern.
Council has indicated that what is important to you locally is important to them and they will act on your concerns.
MidCoast Council’s Director of Corporate Services Steve Embry commented that
these conversations were about "moving us to a better place and having a better experience with Council".
"It's about the council improving what you see and feel improving communications and efficiency within our culture," remarked Mr Embry.
The 'Community Conversations' have concentrated on four broad key areas, these being "climate change, improving assessment items, economic development and open space and recreational strategy", said Acting General Manager Paul De Szell.
"It's about looking at everything from a fresh perspective and building efficiencies both internal and external in our organisation," said Mr De Szell.
Many items will be a long process but it was noted at these meetings that everything will be looked at from a fresh perspective.

68 Years Of Volunteering

onto the water, often in dangerous conditions, to help boaties in need of aid. From engines that won’t
go, to dismasted yachts, the team at Marine Rescue are often the only help available.
They tow home boats that can’t make their own way, and rescue people from the water.
The team at Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage are farewelling two long standing unit members who between them have notched up an extraordinary 68 years of dedicated service to the local boating community.
Richard Osborne OAM has served the local boating community for 40 years, with his wife Diane Wilson having contributed a further 28 years of distinguished service.
Richard joined the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (AVCGA) as an associate member in 1982 when the Lemon Tree Passage base was just a concrete shed in a member’s backyard.
Richard was heavily involved in building the current base in Whitbread Drive, and in 1992 commenced his first of two terms as Flotilla
A qualified Radio Operator, Richard was also the Captain of Communications for the AVCGA NSW Squadron, and was involved in the total rebuild of the Norah Head radio base and Swansea Coast Guard, and the total rewire of the Coast Guard at South Head.
In 2010, Richard was involved in the transition from AVCG to Marine Rescue NSW with two further terms as Unit Commander, and more recently, as Deputy Unit Commander.
An active member of the local community, in 2008 Richard received the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association and NSW Rural Fire Service.
Diane Wilson commenced with the AVCGA in 1994, being an extremely active member as a Boat Crew, Radio Operator, Welfare Officer and Catering Officer, and
Boaters encouraged to dispose of expired flares
BOATERS will have the opportunity to dispose of their expired flares from this month in Port Stephens via a free mobile collection program.
Transport for NSW Executive Director NSW Maritime Mark Hutchings said mobile collection sites will be set up along the NSW coastline.
Collection sites will
be at two locations in Port Stephens (Soldiers Point and Little Beach) on Wednesday November 23, and again on Wednesday, 11 January, before a Tea Gardens collection point is set up on Wednesday, 12 April.
“This collection program provides boaters with a safe and convenient way to dispose of old flares
responsibly and promotes a culture of safer boating,” Mr Hutchings said.
Marine flares can signal someone is in trouble and help provide a location for aircraft or vessels engaged in a search and rescue. Generally, a minimum of two red hand flares and two orange smoke flares are required on all vessels operating in open waters.
“Most flares have a useby date of three years and must be replaced before expiry,” Mr Hutchings said.
“It’s important to remember that penalties apply for not carrying current flares on a vessel in open waters. We’re encouraging boaters to use the expired flare collection program as a timely reminder to check their safety equipment regularly.
“Expired flare collection is no longer available at any
service centres, registries or maritime sites – which is why it’s so important for boaters across NSW to take advantage of the collection program, if and where possible.”

New Rules For Unattended Vehicles
By Marian SAMPSON
NEW laws have been introduced which may cause boat, caravan and trailer owners to see red.
In the changes trailers, boats and caravans parked on public spaces can be moved on, and if the owner fails to move it they could be facing a hefty fine.
The Impounding Act of 1993 has been replaced by the Public Spaces Unattended Property (PSUP) Act 2021.
This allows Councils and Public Land Authorities to notify the owner of an unattended vehicle, including registered vehicles which are registered and left unattended in the same place for more than 28 days.
If the vehicle is a safety risk or causes an obstruction it must be removed immediately.
For unregistered vehicles, or vehicles that are
registered and unable to be driven, it is three days.
If the owner fails to comply the authorities can either move the vehicle, take possession of the area and move it to storage and issue a fine.
For those leaving vehicles unattended fines of $660 apply, and higher court-imposed penalties may apply.
The Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021 places more responsibility on individuals and businesses to better manage their property within reasonable timeframes or face much stronger penalties.
Minister for Local Government Wendy Tuckerman has welcomed the new powers.
“Unattended property such as abandoned shopping trolleys is a big issue for councils, costing local government $17 million a
year to deal with.
“The new rules put the onus back on owners where it belongs,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
“These new laws will not only save councils time and money, they’ll also ensure public spaces are safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for our communities.
“There will be a sixmonth grace period where warnings will be issued for unattended property in most cases, rather than fines.
“We’ve also listened to retailer concerns and introduced more flexibility around requirements to collect abandoned trolleys notified after-hours,” she said.
The PSUP Act includes special powers for authorities to deal with stock animals wandering on public roads and causing a risk to safety, which was widely

Marine Rescue Deputy Commissioner Operations Alex Barrell said that both members epitomised the selfless dedication of members of the Service.
“Members such as Richard and Diane are the backbone of volunteer organisations, and their many years of experience and dedication in mentoring of new members will be sorely missed,” Deputy Commissioner Barrell said.
“I’d like to extend a personal thank you to both of them for their service and wish them well in their future endeavours.”
In recognition of Richard and Diane’s distinguished long service, a farewell dinner was held on Tuesday, 15 November at Tilligerry RSL Sports Club.
Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Pasage welcomes new members to assist in their work, positions can be land or sea based and training is provided.

Now, after the dust has settled, this incisive two-part documentary examines how the complexities of free speech and religious freedom collided, and what role the work place should have. This first episode explores Folau’s upbringing in the devout Christian traditions of the Pasifika community, as well as the repercussions of his father’s health

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club
By Lynda RICHARDS
THURSDAY 3 November:
Round 1 of the Club Championship Major Singles was played, the winner of a game is the bowler to reach the score of 25 regardless of ends played.
This year 16 of our members entered this competition.
Unfortunately, Robyn Webster and Lorraine Murphy had to forfeit resulting in Ingrid Luck and Lynda Richards going through to round 2.
Jean Glover held the lead until the 18th end bowling against Karen Green (17 v 15), six more ends were bowled, all were won by
Karen ultimately winning by 9 shots, 26 v 17.
Maynie Roberts proved to be too strong an opposition for Irene Roberts, Maynie claimed victory on the 19th end 25 v 6.
Convincing wins also to Robyn Beaumont, Pat Baker and Karen McPhie.
Bette Saillard and Lyn Nightingale battled for 28 ends, what a contest.
Bette took an early lead but Lyn fought back on the 16th end 14 all, the 25th end 19 all.
Bette won the next 3 ends, adding 6 points to her tally, winning 25 v 19.
Tuesday 8 November: Round 2 Major Singles plus social bowls.
Bette Saillard and Ingrid Luck were “neck to neck” all the way on the 22nd end Bette 19 v Ingrid 18, the 24th end Bette in front by 2 shots 21 v 19, 26th end Bette winning 25 v 19.
Robyn Beaumont won on the 19th end against Maynie Roberts, 25 v 5.
Karen Green led all the way bowling against Karen McPhie but Karen McPhie wasn’t giving in easily it took 26 ends before Karen Green won 25 v 16.
Pat Baker 14 v Lynda Richards 12 on the 20th end in their game, then Pat took control and surged ahead winning by 11 shots 25 v 14.
Social bowls played a game of Triples, (with a
Swinger lead) and a game of Pairs. Narelle Delacour (visitor), Lorraine Murphy and Sandra Leisemann 17 v Narelle, Maureen Campbell and Robyn Webster 14.
A win to Dawn Jones and Judi Polak 14 v Sheril Johnson and Sheila Rattray 9.
The winners on the day winning with 10 for a win plus ends were Narelle, Lorraine and Sandra.
Thursday 10 November: Semi Final Of the Singles Championship, Karen Green v Bette Saillard and Robyn Beaumont v Pat Baker, all very good experienced bowlers.
Karen won the first 4 ends (8 v 0), but Bette had narrowed this lead to just 3
by the 13th end, 12 v 9, after this end Karen just pushed ahead winning on the 20th end 25 v 11.
Even though Robyn held a significant lead over Pat from the start, it took 27 ends of bowling before she reached the “magic number” winning 25 v 11.
Pat definitely was a worthy opposition, great bowling by all competitors in this Championship, great to see our members “having a go”.
The Final of the Major Singles Karen Green v Robyn Beaumont will be played on Tuesday 15 November, followed by lunch.
Results from social bowls Deb Gardener, Lyn Nightingale and Sandra
Leisemann 19 v Jane Uff, Carol Hayden and Dale Winter 10. Chrissy Buddle (Swinger Lead), Dorothy Thompson, Maureen Campbell and Bev Dunn 11 v Chrissy, Jill McBride, Pam Gilchrist and Sue Morris 9.
Sunday 13 November: The Waves to Wine Challenge was contested at East Cessnock Bowling Club, this is an annual inter-district Competition between Newcastle and the Hunter River District.
Robyn Beaumont and Lorraine Murphy were selected by NDWBA to bowl in this event and I’m pleased to announce Newcastle had 4 wins and a draw out of the 7 games played, winning the Master Board 158 v 125.
TGWBC are very proud of our District Representative Bowlers.

DEAR Jasminda,
On the Couch
MY mother minds our kids two days a week free of charge which is an absolute godsend as my husband and I both work long hours.
She also minds them in our home and she tidies up and does the washing as well.
Things are running like clockwork, but the problem is she is giving our kids heaps of sugary foods that she brings from her home.
I wasn't even aware of this but my toddler said he didn't want dinner because he was full of cake and pancakes. How do we diplomatically deal with this?

occasional treat, but it sounds as though she is completely overstepping the mark here and ruining their evening appetite with bad food choices.
It also sounds as though she's doing this behind your back, since you have only found out through your child that they are being overloaded with unhealthy food during the day.
The statistics speak for themselves with recent ABS data showing that only about one in four kids are consuming the recommended number of vegetables, and almost half of them having sugary or diet drinks once a week.
In the first instance, I'd just have a friendly chat with her and say you have intentionally made healthy food choices for the kids and they aren't eating their evening meal.
Perhaps you can make some fun, healthy snacks (if you don't already do this) and ask her to offer these rather than sugary, processed options.
Dear Felicity,
GOOD on you for doing the right thing for your children and trying to instill healthy eating habits. It is probably acceptable for your mother to give your kids the
It's a tough situation, as your mum is doing so much to help around the home, but if healthy meals are a family priority (and they should be) then she'll need to respect your arrangements, or else you may need to find an alternative childminding situation.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
