By Tara CAMPBELL ON 9 February 2022, crew from Fire and Rescue NSW’s Dungog and Lambton Brigades attended an incident in Stroud where a large, heavy bull was stuck in a deep creek bed.

Upon arrival at the scene in Mill Creek Road just after 3pm, the firefighters from Dungog Fire Station found the 850kg bull, ‘Sanga’, resting against two trees in the water.

A huge range of recreational facilities will be improved, ranging from fishcleaning tables and public amenities to sporting fields, swimming pools, tennis courts and showground facilities.

“The projects underway will benefit almost everyone on the MidCoast,” said Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio.

“MidCoast residents have let us know how important our facilities and public spaces are to them in their everyday lives.

They are the relaxing green spaces, the playgrounds, the sporting and cultural facilities where people spend their leisure time.

“These allocated funds will ensure we maintain the quality of our MidCoast buildings and spaces for the community

to enjoy, which will directly improve the liveability of the region.”

Eight projects are being funded under Council’s capital renewal program, including the replacement of lookouts, park furniture, fencing and signage at various locations across the MidCoast, along with specific larger projects including Manning and Great Lakes Aquatic Leisure Centre ceilings amongst others.

Two other capital renewal projects, the replacement of a section of the Pelican Boardwalk in Forster and gates at the Johnny Martin Oval, will be grant funded.

Three beach access improvement projects are underway at Diamond Beach, Wallabi Point and Seal Rocks.

The Seal Rocks Number One Beach reserve access is currently in a consultancy phase due to the heritage assessment taking place there.

These projects are funded from beach permits revenue.

Farming Forecaster Farming is a risky business at times, and with uncertainties that cannot be controlled such as the weather and commodity markets, it pays to really understand what is in play in your paddock.

FARMING is a risky business at times, and with uncertainties that cannot be controlled such as the weather and commodity markets, it pays to really understand what is in play in your paddock.

Local Land Services have been working with a combination of landholder and industry groups under the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund to develop an online tool that brings together local soil moisture monitoring, local weather forecast and CSIRO pasture modelling to create the ‘Farming Forecaster’.

The Farming Forecaster website brings all that information together and presents it in an easy-tounderstand way so that farmers can use it to manage

stocking rates and feed budgets with real time data.

This project is supported through the Australian Government's Future Drought Fund with thanks to the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.

Farming Forecaster is also supported by the Future Drought Fund, Mid-Coast Dairy Advancement Group, Glencore, MACH Energy, Upper-Hunter Sustainable Farming Group, DungogGresford Land and Beef Group and Singleton Beef and Land Management Association Matt Lieschke is the Senior Agriculture Advisor – Livestock for Southeast Local Land Services and believes this app will help to bring information to those in need easily.

“Farming forecast is a

decision support tool for graziers.

“For the first time, we’re bringing together real-time information around soil moisture, predicted pasture availability and loss of performance as well as local weather data into one single platform that is available at farmer’s fingertips,” Mr Lieschke said.

There are eighteen probes in the MidCoast/ Hunter Region including in Bulahdelah, Gloucester, Krambach and Taree which provide information on soil moisture, change, current weather and humidity as well as comparisons of current data versus the data from the probe’s history.

However, a recent decision of the Full Court of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia has provided a timely reminder of the need to consider how marriage may impact your financial circumstances.

In the matter of Thorpe & Stirling, the parties had entered into Consent Orders whereby the Husband agreed to pay the Wife’s mortgage repayments on a future loan, allowing her to re-house herself following separation. The Husband agreed to pay the loan up to $500,000 until it was discharged. The difficulty arose when the Wife re-married.

The Family Law Act provides that a spouse maintenance order ceases to have effect if

someone re-marries; whereas a property order continues to have effect. The question for the Full Court was whether the order to pay the mortgage repayments was a property order or a spouse maintenance order.

The Court found that because the order for payment of up to $500,000 caused the Wife to receive more than the total value of the asset pool, it must have been a spouse maintenance order, rather than a property order. As such, the Husband’s obligation to pay the mortgage repayment ceased to have effect when the Wife remarried.

Indigenous Funding Announcement

THE NSW Government has announced nearly $5 million in grant funding to support Aboriginal families and communities staying safe and connected to critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said directly investing in Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) is making a real difference to communities, many of them in remote and regional locations.

In Port Stephens Aboriginal and/or Torres

Strait Islander people made up 4.8 percent of the population and in Tea Gardens 4.2 percent, and Hawks Nest 3.8 percent of the population.

“We know that Covid has had a significant impact on our Aboriginal communities across the state,” Mr Franklin said.

“Providing funding to Aboriginal communities and ACCOs is vital to ensuring everyone across the State has access to essential services to keep them physically and socially well, while also remaining connected to the places and people most important to them.”

Mr Franklin said today

the COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Response Grants Program is being extended for another three months until April 29, 2022.

Funding of between $1,000 and $10,000 will be available to ACCOs across NSW to support social, emotional and physical wellbeing, as well as responding to immediate needs in Aboriginal communities.

To date this program has funded 176 projects totaling $1.5 million to provide local responses to Aboriginal people impacted

by COVID-19, particularly vulnerable community members including Elders,

LOCAL resident and expert mariner Gordon Ingate OAM hit the record books once again last month, when sailing his nine-metre yacht ‘Jasnar’ with his regular crew in the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Australia Day competition.

The course involved a sprint in the Harbour from

the start near Shark Island, north to Manly before turning toward home, finishing back off Point Piper, twice around.

Gordon says he won the event by about three seconds, so intense was the competition.

Even more remarkable is the fact that Gordon is now approaching 96 years of age!

Mr Franklin said grant recipients were members of the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (CAPO), NSW Stolen Generation organisations and local decision-making alliances (LDM).

BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation was funded $246,170 to provide support and connections to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQ+ people across NSW. First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) received $250,000 funding to provide advocacy and accessible multi-media communications to Aboriginal people with a disability as well as their

young people, and those with underlying chronic health conditions.

In a second program, the $3.4 million COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Partnership Support Program is supporting 19 Aboriginal organisations.

Selected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations in NSW were invited to apply for grants of between $50,000 and $250,000 in recognition of their significant role in supporting their member organisations across the state and to continue delivering community outreach services across NSW.

Sailing success for 96-year-old Gordon Ingate

Gordon began his extraordinary sailing career at the age of nine when he joined the 1st Chatswood Sea Scouts and he learned to sail the Scout group’s little gaffrigged boat.

He moved on to the 6th Sydney Sea Scouts in Mosman Bay, and for the next few years spent many weekends

Three Day Sickness detected World Day in the MidCoast region of Prayer

By Tara CAMPBELL BOVINE Ephemeral fever (Three Day Sickness) has been detected in the Hunter Region.

Mid-January saw confirmed cases near Maitland, and within a fortnight, the outbreak has now spread through the Lower Hunter in areas including Dungog, Stroud, Gloucester, Barrington, and up the Hunter Valley.

Three Day Sickness is a viral disease of cattle

and buffalo which affects animals for only a few days following a sudden onset of a fever, severe drop in milk production or animals' lack of eating and drinking.

“Cases have not yet been detected around more coastal parts of the MidCoast area.

“This appears to be an example of the disease erupting in the Hunter before making its way down the coast from Queensland, which is the more usual pattern of spread and ADVERTISEMENT

because we haven’t had to wait for its arrival from the north, this outbreak is also a month or two earlier than normal,” a representative from Hunter Local Land Services said.

Due to a widespread outbreak in March and April 2020, many cattle that were alive at that time were exposed to infection and developed immunity.

Consequently, most of the cattle presently affected are young cattle and cattle brought in from

further west or south that have not previously had the opportunity for exposure, although there are sometimes older cattle in the herd that have also escaped infection from previous seasons.

Report details economic cost of Alzheimer's Disease

A NEW report from the University of Canberra’s National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) reveals the staggering future economic cost of Alzheimer's disease, and its impact on Australia’s workforce, patients, families and communities.

The report, ‘The Economic and Societal Cost of Alzheimer's Disease in Australia, 2021-2041’, commissioned by Biogen Australia and New Zealand, builds on NATSEM and Dementia Australia’s ‘Economic Cost of Dementia in Australia 2016-2056 Report’ released in 2017 and projects a 20-year $442 billion impact of Alzheimer’s disease to the Australian economy.

Lead author Emeritus Professor Laurie Brown from NATSEM said the number of people aged 50 and over with diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase by 73 percent from 153,888 in 2021 to 266,114 by 2041.

This increase will lead to an annual cost of $26.6 billion, including direct costs (aged care, hospital and out of hospital services) of $9.8 billion and indirect costs (informal care, lost productivity, and income support) of $16.8 billion by 2041.

“The modelling paints a significant challenge to government, health and aged

care systems into the future,” said Professor Brown.

“The numbers also provide insight into the ripple effect on families and the community as they struggle to care for people living with the disease.”

Under current care, the number of people in Residential Aged Care Facilities with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase by more than 72 percent over the next 20 years, with the numbers increasing from 42,478 persons in 2021 to 73,172 in 2041.

“This is a huge challenge for an aged care system already under pressure. It will see financial impacts of formal residential and community aged care rising by almost $3.6 billion annually and requiring a paid workforce of 18,652 in 2041 to support those living with Alzheimer’s disease in the community alone, up from 10,752 in 2021,” said Professor Brown.

Associate Professor Michael Woodward AM, geriatrician and Head of Aged Care Research, Austin Health said importantly the report also provides an opportunity to quantify the societal costs outside the health system.

“The impact I see on carers and the community each day is often the most challenging to quantify. However, with an expected additional 80,000+ people with Alzheimer’s disease in the community by 2041 compared with

today we can’t afford not to consider this impact in any future approach,” Associate Professor Woodward said.

The report also investigated the potential impact of a disease modifying therapy on the numbers.

Disease-modifying therapies target the pathogenic pathway of Alzheimer’s disease to delay the onset or progression of dementia.

The modelling indicates there is an opportunity to reduce the burden on aged care over the 20 years by $7.9 billion, the cost of residential care by $7.0 billion and formal care in the community by $880 million.

With fewer people having moderate or severe AD dementia, the cost of informal care is also reduced by $4.3 billion – giving a total savings of $12.2 billion.

“While the modelling suggests that the introduction of a disease modifying therapy has the potential to lessen the future impact of Alzheimer’s disease, it is only part of the solution,” said Associate Professor Woodward.

“The findings in this report attest to the importance of developing and implementing a system and society-wide approach, in alignment with the anticipated national dementia strategy to ensure we can provide the best possible clinical outcomes and quality of life in the future.

university, Curtin University, and Perth-based medicinal cannabis company, Little Green Pharma Ltd (LGP), have joined forces to explore the use of medicinal cannabis treatment options for obesity and related health issues.

Managing diabetes well is crucial to positive long term patient outcomes.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare tells us that 1 in 20 Australians is living with diabetes; and the prevalence of diabetes increases with age.

Almost 1 in 5 (19 percent) Australians aged 75 and over had diabetes in 2017–18, four times as high as for 45–54 year olds (4.5 percent) and 1.9 times as high as for 55–64 year olds (10 percent).

Diabetes was also more common in males (5.0 percent) than females (3.8 percent) after controlling for age (ABS 2019a).

The average age of people in Tea Gardens is 65 years old, making the population at high risk of diabetes.

“Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally with at least 2.8 million people dying annually as a result of being overweight or obese and current drug treatments have significant adverse side-effects and need to be injected by patients.

Diabetes and obesity are some of the underlying health conditions which has presented as a comorbidity for COVID-19 fatalities.

Prosperity Lies In Clean and Green

CLEAN and green energy is high on voters priorities.

A new poll of over 1000 NSW voters in regional, rural and metropolitan NSW reveals that a strong majority believe NSW’s future economic prosperity lies in clean industries (60%), including renewable energy exports (e.g. green hydrogen), critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt, and manufacturing renewable products.

Notably, only one fifth of voters in NSW (21%) believe future prosperity lies in coal and gas.

New South Wales and Queensland dominate the Australian coal export sector, and New South Wales is home to the world's largest coal port in Newcastle.

Tomago is home to some new battery initiatives which fit the clean energy bill.

Yet two-thirds say clean jobs in renewable energy

will be the best source of future employment (68%).

Only 19% in NSW back fossil fuels as the best source of future jobs.

The survey, commissioned by the Climate Council and conducted by YouGov, also found that: 6 in 10 say the government’s top investment priority should be in renewables (62%) ahead of 15% for coal and 17% for gas; 64% agree further cuts to carbon emissions will deliver economic benefits to workers and 66% say further cuts will benefit businesses; 6 in 10 respondents agree that regional areas will benefit most from the global transformation to renewables (61%); only 2 in 10 believe workers that currently rely on fossil fuels are getting enough support to prepare for a future with less coal and gas (21%).

THERE is a shortage of timber in the Hunter region which is impacting the new housing sector.

Master Builders say the Federal Government’s move to increase support for the use of low-carbon timber is good news for the building and construction sector and will support jobs and economic activity while reducing greenhouse emissions.

Low carbon timber is an engineered timber product.

Master Builders Australia’s CEO Denita Wawn said, “(The) announcement of $300 million to incentivise the greater use of low carbon engineered wood products in commercial and medium

density housing is a big pragmatic policy win for the building, construction and forest industries, consumers and the environment.

“Master Builders Australia has called for measures that will assist the industry to make use of more sustainable building materials without imposing excessive costs on the industry or consumers,” she said.

This is good news for first home builders too as the use of the engineered timber is expected to reduce the overall cost of a build.

“This new incentive announced by the Federal Government will help bring down the cost of construction, develop local capacity in low-carbon timber product

manufacture, and deliver healthier buildings for our clients and the community,” Denita Wawn said.

“We have also jointly, with the Australian Products Association, called for measures to tackle a forecast of a major shortfall of timber housing frames in the next decade and this measure will have positive flow on effects in addressing this challenge,” she said.

“It is these kinds of innovative and practical solutions that produce winwin solutions that mean that builders and consumers can choose more sustainable building materials and healthier buildings without also choosing to take on prohibitive additional costs,” Denita Wawn said.

Regulatory relief for business during Omicron BUILDING homes and supporting jobs in the construction, retail and hospitality sectors are at the centre of the latest tranche of regulatory relief helping NSW business get to the other side of the Omicron outbreak.

Changes to planning rules will allow for an extension of emergency construction hours, as well as making it easier for businesses to get much needed supplies and extending temporary measures that let pubs and restaurants continue to use carparks and bowling greens.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the measures were aimed at supporting some of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic and designed to keep the economic wheels turning during the Omicron wave of the

pandemic.

“We know that some retailers have struggled to get supplies and that impacts what people see on the shelves,” Mr Kean said.

“We are changing the rules to make it easier for businesses to get those critical supplies – 24 hours a day in business and industrial areas.

“We’ve already changed the rules to let diners onto the footpaths and public spaces and now we’re extending measures to let pubs and restaurants use privately owned car parks and open space until 30 June.”

West Nile Disease in horses

By Tara CAMPBELL WEST Nile virus has been detected in a small number of horses across NSW. West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus which can affect horses, people and other animals, however only mosquitoes can spread the disease.

Two horses in the Hunter region which have been diagnosed have recently passed away.

This is the first time West Nile Disease has been detected since 2011, where NSW and Victoria saw an outbreak resulting in approximately 100 deaths of horses from the virus.

Local vet, Dr Lucy Cudmore urged horse owners to closely monitor symptoms due to similarities to the Hendra Virus.

"It can be quite distressing to find your horse presenting with these neurological abnormalities.

"They can look like they have a headache or look quite dull and depressed and sometimes they'll have a fever,” Dr Cudmore said.

The horse cannot pass the virus onto humans, unlike Hendra Virus.

Horse owners are encouraged to take extra precautions to reduce exposure to mosquitos through rugging, insecticides and restricting grazing times when mosquitoes are most active.

Fortunately, the Australian strain of the West Nile Virus is not as severe as the outbreaks in other countries.

"Compared to our US counterparts, this disease tends to be relatively milder than what they see, and certainly we have a lower mortality rate in Australia.

"The last outbreak was 2011 and we saw about 1,000 horses between NSW and Victoria test positive to the virus and there was only about a ten percent fatality rate,” Dr Cudmore said.

West Nile virus is a notifiable disease in NSW. If you suspect a horse is showing signs of the disease, call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

A name is a significant part of our identity and many of us have been named after well-known personalities or relatives.

A name, unless it is one of those newfangled ones where the parents are just asking for trouble -- Alchemy, Stardrop and Anomaly spring to mind -- is as much a part of us as our hair colour or our accent.

Admittedly there are people who change their names, but you seem quite happy with yours, so of course you want others to get it right, even if they are a forgetful (or maybe sly) granny.

What do you call this woman? If you call her nanna, maybe you could start calling her naan (like the bread) and see if it bothers her.

This would be a good way to lead into the conversation. If you call her Olga, perhaps you could change it to Ogle and then wink at your husband in a 'you started this, but I'm going to finish it' way.

Then call him Dove, just to bring the point home.

I think the issue will be cleared up very quickly.

Apply for funds for community or heritage projects q If you have a project to benefit the community in mind or a heritage listed place or property within a heritage conservation area, you may be eligible for a grant through the funding programs.

Jointly funded by MidCoast Council and the NSW Government, the heritage funding program offers assistance of up to $2,000, and in some special cases grants of up to $5,000 are available.

As part of the application process, eligible property owners must demonstrate their contribution to the project, as the grant cannot make up more than 50 percent of the total project cost.

Applications for heritage funding open on Monday 14 February and close on Monday 18 April.

Such was the bowling experience that commenced today for 7 teams from the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club when they hosted a visit from 7 teams from the Northmead Travelling Bowlers Club.

The weather was not kind this morning with a heavy shower of rain preceding the competition and another lesser fall during play.

Teams of Triples were playing for the Tea Gardens / Northmead Challenge Trophy and the winning club was decided like a pennant game with all shots counted on a master board.

The competition was keen from both sides with matches shared today 3.5 - 3.5.

Tea Gardens however won the master board 130-104.

13 February Day two of the Tea Gardens Northmead challenge continued today under heavy clouds that later cleared into sunshine.

The tables were turned today with Northmead taking the games right up to Tea Gardens.

Northmead were defeated in games won, 3-4 but won the master board 126121.

Overall Tea Gardens won the Challenge Trophy 251-230.

The closeness of the scores indicates that there was not that much difference in the quality of games played when it is considered that there were 14 matches each of 18 ends.

The trophy might have been won but the real winner over the weekend was the game of bowls.

It was a fantastic weekend with new friendships being made and promises to do it again.

Soon, I hope.

Special thanks to the Country Club, the Men’s Bowling Club Committee, and the Garden Eatery, who never fail to meet the challenge, breakfast cooks Dave Perry and Noel Jackson and raffle master, Graeme Reynolds.

In other news.

Members will note that the dates for the Major Pairs have been changed due to a conflict with the 2021 Zone Major Singles competition.

This tournament was held over from last year due to Covid 19 and the rescheduled date clashed with our Major Pairs.

Rounds 1 and 2 will commence on 26 and 27 March.

MidCoast Council is offering a helping hand to assist eligible organisations fund their community project and owners of heritage buildings and places to bring them back to their former glory.

If you have a project to benefit the community in mind or a heritage listed place or property within a heritage conservation area, you may be eligible for a grant through the funding programs.

Community donations funding can assist organisations to deliver community development and capacity building projects.

The annual donations program offers up to $2000, or up to $10,000 over a two-year period, towards establishing self-sustaining activities under the seed funding program.

“Active community groups and the tireless work of their members are vital to the wellbeing of our community,” said MidCoast Council’s Mayor Claire Pontin.

“The helping hand MidCoast Council can provide through the community donations program is one way we can assist the community.

“It’s always encouraging to see the vast range of innovative projects these small amounts of money can help fund, and the positive difference they can make.”

Applications for community donations funding open on Monday 14 February and close on Sunday 13 March.
