Group are working together to protect a nesting colony of endangered little terns on Corrie Island Nature Reserve, as part of the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program.

NSW Government Saving our Species Officer, Christophe Tourenq, said it was fantastic to see that little terns have returned to the island in the Lower Myall River mouth to breed this year.

“We’re relieved to see that this colony of little terns has returned to Corrie Island to breed,” said Mr Tourenq.

BBQ Safe This Summer

By Marian SAMPSON THE Christmas holidays are a popular time to step outside our kitchens and crank up the barbeque.

It’s as Australian as meat pies, thongs and giving things a fair go.

While there is plenty of inspiration on television on how to cook outdoors, there is a second set of considerations before we chuck another shrimp on the barbeque.

Firstly we need to check the fire safety rating and make sure that it is legal to use our barbeques.

Wood and charcoal fuelled barbeques are banned at times when the risk of bushfires are

increased.

During a Total Fire Ban you can use a gas or electric barbeque provided that it is on a residential property within 20 metres of the house, or it is in a designated picnic area and the barbeque is approved

by Council, National Parks or State Forests, and it is always attended by a responsible adult.

However, the ground within two metres of the barbeque must be cleared of all materials which could burn and you must have an immediate and continuous supply of water available.

Messages Connecting Community Connection has been one of the biggest casualties of the pandemic.

CONNECTION has been one of the biggest casualties of the pandemic.

Particularly the elderly have been left isolated and disconnected from their communities as they have locked down and stayed home to stay safe.

As one of the most vulnerable age groups impacted by COVID-19, the elderly have done their part and paid a high price.

Many of these same people either fought in wars to give us the quality of life that we have, or endured rationing and blackouts at night to keep safe during the days of WWII. Now it is our turn to let them know that they are not forgotten, that they matter, q

and that their sacrifice in 2020 has not been unseen.

Port Stephens local, November Sheehan, founded Heart Pen Letter in the midst of the pandemic and engages with members of the community to provide messages of hope for our elderly.

The initiative initially started to deliver a nice crafty card with an uplifting message to residents in Port Stephens many aged care facilities.

However the movement has grown and now letters and cards have been sent around the state to areas where there are people left isolated by the pandemic.

The cards are being distributed from Port Stephens locals to Muswellbrook, Nowra,

of collecting the cards professionally and COVID-19 safe.

You can still send some messages to brighten someone's day before Christmas or, if you are in a position to do so donate some cards, or Express Port Satchels to Heart Letter Pen to assist November in sharing a community connection to those who have missed out on so much this year.

Twilight markets a success THE skies were heavy and threatening but in the true spirit of Christmas, the rain held off and the Stroud Christmas Twilight Market rocked Cowper Street on Friday evening.

Given the year we’ve had with bushfires, drought and then COVID-19, there was even a moment when we wondered if we would even have Christmas, but thankfully we do and everyone was keen to let their hair down and have some fun.

Local businesses and artisans were excited to be involved and the

community was equally as excited to support them.

Everyone turned out to spread the cheer and boost our local economy.

True community spirit!

With all businesses participating, between 5 and 8pm, Cowper Street hummed to local music and entertainment. Stores stayed open, local growers and artisans sold their wares from colourful street stalls along our footpaths and verges.

Fashion shows, fantastic face-painting and The Grinch brought squeals of delight from all the

children, arriving in style in a privately owned fire truck.

The local RFS brigades were also in attendance, yet again supporting their community.

There were giveaways galore and the wonderful discounts and special offers from businesses ensured Christmas shopping lists got filled in a heart-warming display of ‘shop local’ spirit.

The community spirit of small rural towns is well known, and Stroud is no exception.

When the going gets tough, our community can be counted on to come together and support each other.

And come together it did at the town’s most successful Christmas Twilight Market yet.

Rusty Hangs Up Her Wings

By David CROMARTY FOR 18 years, Rusty Sargeant has served as the Chair and more recently, the sole member of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Bulahdelah Support Group, but on December 7, Rusty ‘hung up her wings’ and officially retired.

In her time in the role, Rusty and her group have raised over $140,000 for the Service and helped install helipads in Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah.

In recent times however, Rusty has served as the sole Support Group member, as volunteer numbers gradually declined.

Currently no one is stepping into Rusty’s shoes, a role that will no doubt be hard to fill, so despite retirement, Rusty will continue to manage the money tin donations in the area until new volunteers come forward.

Increasing visitor numbers and the sheer volume of traffic passing

through the region on the Pacific Highway has allowed Rusty to see the fruits of her labour first hand and she admits it gives her mixed feelings.

“Every time I hear the aircraft or know it’s in the area for an accident on the highway or another emergency, my first thoughts are for the people and families involved.

“At the same time, I take some comfort in knowing that the work we have done in the past in raising funds for the service has ensured that those people will be receiving the best care possible,” Rusty said.

“Our efforts to secure the two helipads at Tea Gardens (opened in 2011) and Bulahdelah (opened in 2009) are my proudest accomplishments, working with Val Brown, another Support Group member who retired three years ago.

“Together we know these facilities will be utilised in years to come to deliver a better outcome for those who live, holiday or even just pass through this area should they ever need the Rescue

Helicopter,” she said.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service CEO Richard Jones OAM said that Rusty’s contribution, along with that of her Support Group in past years, has been invaluable to both the Service and her local community.

“Our volunteers are such an important part of the communities we serve,” Jones said.

“For 18 years Rusty has worked tirelessly with her members and notably in recent times, on her own, to continue to support the Service and ensure that we remain available to her community and others like it across Northern NSW,” Jones said.

‘Retirement’, Rusty admits is probably a loose term for both her and husband Kim, knowing that whilst her official role will cease, the couple know that the Service is entrenched into their psyche and every time they hear the aircraft overhead, they will revisit and treasure their contribution to the Region’s life saving aeromedical service.

As more residents in Myall Quays began to support the initiative, trips to recycle more and more items became more frequent

and the volume of recyclables grew.

Rather than throwing a few garbage bags full of recyclables into the boot, at 100 a time, a trailer was needed to store the goods.

As the amount of recyclables increased TOMRA return machines at Medowie, Raymond Terrace, Salamander Bay and Waratah have been used.

Participants feel there are at least two benefits from this voluntary process.

That recycled goods are kept from landfill, while also supporting local charities.

The most recent donation of $1,250, representing 12,500 bottles and cans was made to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The Christmas period generally leads to the availability of recyclable containers.

WHY ARE REGIONAL MARKETS DOING SO WELL? “I seem to always be reading that regional markets, and ours is no exception, are doing so well right now yet city markets aren’t.

Why do you think this is?”

YOU’RE right.Much has been written about the property market this year and COVID-19 has further exposed the regional/urban divide. Urban markets actually rely a lot on overseas buyers.

By that I don’t mean people who live overseas and simply invest here, but those who migrate to Australia to live.

COVID-19 has stopped that for the foreseeable future and consequently urban markets have taken somewhat of a ‘hit’ as the pool of buyers diminishes. Regional markets however, draw from the cities and again, COVID-19 has played a significant role in people re-examining their priorities and lifestyles while the acceptance of working from home as the ‘new normal’ has given rise to a significant urban-regional exodus.

Additionally, in order to boost regional economies, there are many subsidies offered to attract city dwellers to move to country areas, swelling the regional buyer pool. We’re seeing such buyer diversity across R&R’s five offices: Stroud, Gloucester, Forster, Bulahdelah and Port Stephens. And let’s face it, whether it’s a tree or sea change, our gorgeous region with stunning rural areas, amazing coastal towns and incredible infrastructure and employment opportunities has something for everyone.

Tea Gardens Public Pool DEAR News Of The Area,

I AM taking this opportunity of writing to Council, not only as a member of several community groups, but also as a member of this vibrant, aging group of residents who are now calling on Council to provide them with urgent assistance.

The closure of the public pool in Tea Gardens is of major concern and no doubt is replicated in similar townships within Council bounds.

It is causing fractures within the community on emotional grounds and although it is generally recognised as State Govt. policy, it also results in Council taking the blame.

It is my belief that Senior management must lobby the Govt. to change, particularly as COVID-19 restrictions are being eased.

that these areas have never been a home to the pandemic – thankfully no evidence of a potential outbreak and good reason to relieve the brakes on this very important issue.

We can accept the fact that certain groups which meet the criteria of registration and insurance have been able to use the pool, however the restrictions are loosening and our Council must take a position of a saving knight.

Council, and in turn, Govt., must recognise we are an aging population with an increasing number of disabled people who have no chance of using the beach because of access.

We no longer have an open water pool and the public pool is the only facility to ease the burgeoning heat and provide exercise.

Please use your considerable influence and have these restrictions removed.

THANKFULLY, due to the changes in COVID-19 restrictions, Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club and Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club were able to hold their annual combined Presentation Night on Monday December 7.

MUM has decided to be ethical this Christmas and she won't even buy a Christmas tree because they are plastic.

She also won't buy a real one because 'plants have feelings too'. What about our feelings?

Ms Chloe F. Dear Chloe, WELL, I don't want to be a Christmas grinch, but your mum has a point. Plastic Christmas trees are imported and you might not feel the same about the tree once you remember it is basically just a very fancy mass of petroleum chemicals.

If your mum is worried about the plant's feelings, you can buy a lovely potted tree that costs around the same price and it will grow along with your family.

There are some other alternatives if you want to break with tradition and keep your mum happy. A branch can look very stylish when adorned with decorations. If you use the decorations you already have, you'll be saving money and not adding to landfill. Alternatively, you can make your own decorations.

Without getting all hippy trippy on you, Chloe, there are some great ideas on the Internet such as drying orange segments and making cinnamon stick bundles which will make your house smell amazing.

I hope with the money your mum saves on her ethical decorating, she will buy you a wonderful present this year.

Although, chances are she is possibly donating a goat or a chicken in your name and giving you some underwear made out of wood pulp.

Progress Report

Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association ALMOST to the end of the year, which must go down as the most disruptive since the Second World War. Whilst the world is suffering, we in Australia have been relatively unscathed thanks to an alert Government and strict controls.

We, here on the North Shore of Port Stephens, have been subject to the same nationwide Government imposed rules and restrictions.

Thankfully we have been blessed with no outbreaks.

Council and business houses are obligated by law to implement those restrictions which can seem onerous and unfair to some of the community, however there is a light at the end of the tunnel and growing brighter by the day.

Interestingly, there have been many adaptations during the past year and a lot of those changes will remain with us into the future.

Some of you may consider the negatives, however the majority will accept these changes as inevitable and to the betterment of our community.

Along the waterfront, we have seen a huge increase in visitor numbers.

More than once we have heard in casual discussion things like, “We always

drove straight past. This time we came to look and will return.”

We hear permanent rental property is non-existent and holiday rentals are fully booked well into next year.

The ferry operator is doing great business and is averaging at capacity almost every day.

We have been found!

The permanent population is burgeoning, as working from home is now a fixture, with owners of holiday rental properties relocating and the pending approvals of approximately 2000 home and land packages will add to this population over the next few years.

Who can blame them when one sees what nature has provided us?

Whilst such growth must be accepted and is great for our business houses, we must maintain height restrictions on new buildings as we have no wish to become another Nelson Bay or Forster.

It has been an interesting year in hits and misses throughout this community.

In the hit department, the Slipway committee were successful in overturning an unfortunate bureaucratic decision to close the Tea Gardens Slipway.

Common sense prevailed, a grant has been received and the upgrade should be completed in the New Year.

Dredging of the eastern channel was completed providing quick and safe access to the outer port for recreational vessels.

We also have reports that the ferries are using it and a pro fishing boat can save up to an hour in travel time to Broughton Island.

A grant was provided to renew the boat ramp in Tea Gardens and should be completed in the first half of next year and we have been allocated four new fish cleaning tables.

Sadly, we have had new reports of accidents on the two Hawks Nest ramps, one requiring hospitalisation and we must record these as misses and targets for the forthcoming year.

Myall Coast radio is up and running.

They will be expanding the hours of live broadcasting in the New Year and intend reaching a wider audience.

Tune in to frequency FM 87.8 for national, local news and well-balanced music.

We can report the car park on Bennetts Beach has been resurfaced and painted.

The amenities block is undergoing a renewal and the outdoor furniture along Marine Drive has been repaired and refinished.

Residents have joined together and are working with Council to clean up and maintain the Community Hall Gardens and intend expanding their services to other areas in Hawks Nest.

2021 promises to start with a great initiative with the introduction of Myall Coast Tours.

Sandra and Bruce Murray have purchased a 22-seat bus, taking all necessary qualifications to introduce a range of scenic tours including a ferry link, Lakes and National Park.

It is a project we will be proud of and wish them every success.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News

7 DECEMBER The combined Bowling Clubs held their Presentation Night this evening.

The event was well attended and after dinner was served, the business turned to the awards presentation acknowledging the efforts of bowlers who had the good fortune to have performed well in the various Club Championship competitions.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of two major awards.

The first being the Club Championship Singles Trophy that was won this year by Greg Pearson and the Clubman of the Year award that was presented to the current Club Secretary Gary Wynne.

Garry has been a staunch member of our Club for many

years and is a well-known sportsman in our area, having also excelled at golf.

Congratulations to Greg and Gary and to all those who participated in the Club’s Championship events during the year.

A beautiful summers day saw 53 bowlers enjoying our great game.

There were q couple of Triples games, but most played Fours matches.

The winners on 20 points were Terry Munright, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson.

The runners-up on 18 points were Lon Richards, Barry Goode and Bob Weir.

The luck number was won by Danny Johnson.

There has been a keen response to Pennant nominations among members and all teams will have the

potential to do well.

Normal Wednesday bowls will recommence on the 6th January 2021 with, hopefully, both greens in play. Leading up to Pennants the format for play will be 2 bowl triples to get everyone used to this way of playing.

The first Championship event of the new year will be the Club Fours competition commencing on Saturday 9 January.

The Council initiative, PAMP, has now closed and we would like to thank all those who submitted their wishes to Council.

The process is extremely important to register with Council, the fact that we have many needed necessary improvements to our pathways and streets.

The majority of the improvements revolve around safety issues and must be undertaken in the face of our growing and aging population.

It is my understanding that the response has been enormous and exemplifies the caring community we are members of.

Results should be made public early in the New Year.

2021 promises to be another interesting year, once we are able to conduct regular meetings. Times will be published and you are more than welcome to lend a hand.

By Sandra MURRAY AN enthusiastic team from Myall Masters reconnected with other swimmers for the first time since COVID-19 restraints lifted, with nine swimmers participating in a mini swim meet hosted by the Maitland Merlots Masters Swimming Club at the outdoor 50m pool at Maitland Aquatic Centre last Sunday.

The competition was hard but fun, with swimmers reconnecting with both racing conditions as well as the wider swimming community.

Swimmers were able to participate in up to three events across all strokes, with several of the team members achieving a personal best for the season.

The afternoon finished with a close freestyle relay between all teams (men and women), and the women’s team took the day.

Stephen Rees, Captain, told News Of The Area, “It has been a great swim meet after so long.

“Most of our swimmers achieved a personal best time

racing today and the pool conditions were excellent.

“But what really mattered was seeing our team spirit and the camaraderie poolside, with a great mix of people and ages.

“The meet today also provided a great warm-up for our next big swim carnival planned to happen at the Tea Gardens public pool on 13 February 2021.

In 2019, the Myall Masters Swimming Carnival attracted 22 clubs and 177 swimmers to Tea Gardens and was widely regarded as a great success.

Myall Master’s swimming training is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with excellent coaching provided by trained volunteers, and a COVID-19 safety plan in place.
