A MAN will face court next month after being charged with a fatal crash on the Myall Coast.

Just before 11.30am on Monday 4 October 2021, emergency services were called to Pindimar Road near Myall Way, Pindimar, after reports a Subaru Forester and a Nissan Dualis had collided.

“The woman stopped her Nissan Dualis on the shoulder of Pindimar Road, when it was struck by a Subaru Forester,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Emergency services attended the scene, however, the 64-year-old Bundabah woman died at the scene.

The Subaru driver, a 46-year-old Pindimar man, was freed after being trapped and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

A crime scene was established by officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District which was later examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Disappointment at the pool LOCAL users of the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool have been left disappointed after staffing constraints caused the pool to be closed.

Despite advertising 6am7pm opening times, visitors were left frustrated after turning up to the pool to find it closed.

“Seven ladies arrived

at the pool on Thursday 9 December to be greeted with this sign, with no mention of Thursday.

“Couldn’t we leave the pool in Council control until YMCA sorts themselves out?”

“This is not a good start for YMCA,” local Jan Peeters said.

YMCA were recently contracted to take over

management of the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool after COVID-19 restrictions left MidCoast Council unable to re-open unmanned swimming pools in the region.

Tea Gardens Swimming Pool was only open from 1:30PM-7:00PM on both Friday 10 December and Saturday 11 December, with the pool being closed all day on Sunday.

encourage local businesses, community organisations, indigenous organisations, councils and Regional Development Australia committees to take a look at the guidelines and apply.”

Applications are open from Friday 10 December to Thursday 6 January 2022.

The final spot on council is predicted to go to Jessica Corkill with 2,522 or 4.39% of votes.

Current Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Councillor, Len Roberts (Group J) is sitting on 2,401 or 4.18% of votes, with local voting centres displaying voter’s preferences for Epov’s group C, Fowler’s group K and Pontin’s group H. frustration at these closures.

“Council needs to step up and pay for a more professional team,” one commenter wrote.

“Hope this is only temporary,” another added.

YMCA expects this irregularity with hours to only be an initial hurdle, whilst hiring casual staff.

“From Monday 13 December we expect to return to our regular hours of 6AM-7PM. “As part of the Y NSW, we believe in giving back to our local communities and we look forward to continuing this,” a spokesperson for YMCA said.

Celebrating 10 years of monitoring waterway health MIDCOAST Council has celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Waterway and Catchment Report Card, releasing the 2021 Report Card on Sunday 5 December on the banks of the Wallamba River.

“With over 1,900 water quality samples taken across our six major catchments we now have a greater understanding of the patterns, trends and cycles of our waterways,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager Natural Systems, Gerard Tuckerman.

This year, eight sites improved their grade and 10 maintained their results from the previous year.

There was no site which decreased in grade.

High rainfall affected water quality across our region's waterways as the environment began to recover from extended drought, bushfires and flooding conditions over

previous years.

Dr Peter Scanes from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment heads up the independent team of scientists who assess the health of our waterways.

“As with previous years, the amount of runoff from the catchment influenced the Report grades at sites.

“The sampling period from November 2020 to April 2021 was wetter than average and results showed reduced water clarity and a corresponding decrease in algal growth at most sites,” said Dr Scanes.

“The Report Card results help us assess many Estuary and Catchment management projects that we undertake each year with our community and partners," said Mr Tuckerman.

“Having 10 years of waterway health data is a major milestone for us.

“It provides us with a deeper understanding of our waterways and identifies actions for further improvements through our Catchment and Estuary programs.”

Over the last 10 years several successful water quality projects on the Wallamba River have been undertaken.

Bank stabilisation works, wetland rehabilitation, weed control and over 19,000 native plantings has resulted in water quality improvements at the site.

The Wallamba received a D grade in 2011 and this year has achieved a B grade for waterway health.

“The results at the Wallamba River show just how much can be achieved when we are working together across industry and agencies towards a common goal, it is something our community can be proud of,” added Mr Tuckerman.

BCS students take on Primary Gardeners project BULAHDELAH Central School has been successful with an application for a 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for their Primary Gardeners project.

BCS Primary Teacher Jackie O’Connell said students have been busy preparing soil, composting, learning about companion planting and growing their own food.

“We would like to thank John Barry (General Assistant) and all the Primary staff

who have made this such a fun project,” Jackie said.

All K-6 Primary students have been given the opportunity to work in the garden during Term 4, to learn skills for producing food.

New package to attract doctors to the regions LOCAL GP practices in towns throughout our region will have more options and a larger pool of doctors to recruit from, following changes announced today by the Morrison Joyce Government.

From 1 January 2022, there will be automatic access to the Distribution Priority Area (DPA) classification for regional and larger rural towns (MMM 3-4), to make it easier for areas to recruit more doctors.

The DPA classification identifies locations in Australia with a shortage of doctors. Currently, only

rural and remote (MMM 5-7) communities receive automatic DPA status, with other MMM locations having to be assessed annually to see whether the health services for the population meet a service benchmark.

If access is under the benchmark, a town is classified as a DPA and clinics in that area can employ doctors subject to a moratorium, such as those who have trained overseas.

Students who have accepted a Commonwealth Supported Place in an Australian medical course in return for a commitment to work in a regional, rural

and remote area at the end of their studies must also work in a DPA. Federal Minister for Regional Health and Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said this change would provide a real difference to patients across the region.

“Short term, this means that our local practices can begin reaching out to overseas doctors who want to move to our region and practise here,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This change begins from 1 January 2022, and I know that local practices will be working hard to take full advantage of this

“With COVID restrictions stopping sport for several months, around 430,000 children are yet to use their Active Kids vouchers this year, meaning there is around $86 million worth of vouchers still up for grabs.”

“This change will help ensure rural and regional areas have a choice of more doctors to work in their local communities, leading to increased access to GP and primary care services

for many thousands of Australians in regional and rural communities.”

The Morrison Joyce Government will also invest in a significant incentive for eligible doctors and nurse practitioners to practice in rural, remote or very remote areas of Australia, by eliminating all or part of their Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) debt subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

Dr Gillespie said that incentivising doctors and nurse practitioners to live and work outside of metropolitan areas would help improve access to quality health care for local communities.

“This new initiative shows that our government is serious about supporting doctors who genuinely commit to practise in regional, rural and remote

towns, which offers continuity of care, instead of having an over-reliance on locums,” Dr Gillespie said.

“That’s why we have committed to a number of immediate initiatives to reward doctors and nurse practitioners for working in regional, rural and remote Australia.

“The Morrison Joyce Government is focused on delivering better outcomes, reducing access barriers and creating a flexible system that works for all Australians, regardless of where they live.

“Today’s announcements continue to build on our Government’s Stronger Rural Health Strategy and our longstanding efforts to grow our own rural GP and medical workforce,” Dr Gillespie said.

Bleed4Blue Campaign launches

THE NSW Police Force are rolling up their sleeves for 2021’s ‘Bleed4Blue’ blood drive.

‘Bleed4Blue’ is an annual, three-month law enforcement-focused blood drive that was launched in 2018 following the stabbing of Detective Sergeant John Breda at Maroubra on Australia Day 2018.

Now in its fourth year, NSWPF has launched

Operation ‘Bleed4Blue’ with employees, family, friends and the community encouraged to visit a Lifeblood donor centre across the state to donate lifesaving blood products.

In addition to the summer drive, NSWPF will be attempting to break the record for the number of donations in a single day.

The highest donation total recorded by a Lifeblood Team in a single day in Australia is 230 successful donations.

Lifeblood Centres have

thrown their support behind the challenge, turning their centres blue, wearing blue clothes, and even serving blue refreshments to donors.

Saving lives is part of the job for officers, explains Assistant Commissioner Steve Hegarty who helped launch today’s challenge and is urging police to take part.

“We take our police operations very seriously, and this blood drive is no different,” said Assistant Commissioner Hegarty.

CHRISTMAS is the time for giving, and we all love to spoil our little ones at this time of year.

However consumers are being warned to be cautious and ensure that toys are safe and age appropriate.

The NSW Government is reminding parents and grandparents to exercise caution when buying toys and other children's gifts this Christmas.

Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson said that leading into the Christmas period, it is important shoppers are aware of the risks of purchasing dangerous toys.

“It is fantastic to see Australians embracing the Christmas spirit and many of us looking forward to being reunited with our friends and families after months of separation, but it is important that we celebrate the festive season as safely as possible,” Mr Anderson said.

“Retailers have a responsibility to ensure their products do not cause injury to children, but not every retailer plays by the rules so we need to exercise caution when purchasing gifts for our loved ones.”

Since 2019, NSW Fair Trading has received 388 complaints relating to unsafe toys.

Of those, 279, or 72 percent, related to toys bought online.

"When shopping for Christmas toys and gifts online this year, purchasers need to take a minute to think about whether or not this toy could pose a hazard to their little ones,” Mr Anderson said.

“Each year we see a range of toys that are dangerous or inappropriate, from things that can shoot, choke, cut or burn, there are many toys out there that should not make their way into the hands of a child.”

According to child safety organisation Kidsafe, “In Australia, around 20 children per week are admitted to hospital because they have ingested a button battery and children aged 0-5 years are particularly vulnerable.

“If a child swallows a button battery; even a used one, it can burn through soft tissue in just two hours causing horrendous internal injuries and even cause death.

“The NSW Government is working to ensure these toys never reach the market, and if they do, it is important that consumers are educated enough not to give them to kids where they could become lethal.”

Some of the toys that have been confiscated this year and are scheduled to be destroyed include: a penguin cigarette lighter; toy guns and other toys with choking hazard projectiles or easily removable small parts; sponge toys with extendable string pieces

that are strangling hazards; magnet toys with choking hazard small magnet balls; a ‘crown hat’ decoration with flammable plastic leaves; battery operated toys with easily openable battery cavities, giving children easy access to choking hazard batteries; a battery operated toy duck that lays choking hazard plastic eggs; and small ‘pen’ batteries that are a choking hazard.

There are simple steps consumers can take to ensure the gifts they buy are safe.

Do your research before buying Christmas toys and make sure they are compliant, safe, and age appropriate.

Consumers who have inadvertently bought an unsafe toy are entitled to a refund and are able to report businesses for unsafe toys.

If they are unable to resolve the problem with the shop, they can lodge a complaint with NSW Fair Trading.

Mr Anderson said the NSW Government routinely visits businesses to check product safety.

“Earlier this year we issued a fine after inspectors found choking hazards and flammable pyjamas at a toy shop in Cabramatta.

“We also seized and destroyed the dangerous stock,” Mr Anderson said.

“To everyone out there shopping for toys, have a very Merry Christmas but do take a minute to consider the toys you are buying and let’s keep our kids safe.”

The Bleed4Blue drive is run in partnership with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and was established after Det Sgt John Breda lost almost twelve litres of blood when he was stabbed during a police operation.

The medical team used more than 100 bags of blood to keep him alive, including 48 bags in one six-hour surgery.

Each week, Lifeblood requires 31,000 donations to meet demand which is at a

ten-year-high.

Hospitals are reporting increased presentations in emergency, obstetrics, and surgery.

December is a busy time and elective surgeries are being rescheduled postlockdown, so blood drives provide life-saving donations.

“The need for blood never takes a break and donated blood will be needed every day between now and New Year’s Eve to help treat many sick and seriously ill Australians,” said Carley Byrnes, Lifeblood.

“With hospital demand for blood the highest it’s been in nearly a decade, December is the time for all of us to do what police do so well – roll

up our sleeves and lend an arm when it’s most needed.”

During the 2020 campaign, a total of 4,419 donations were made across the country, with the NSW Police Force making 1,126 donations, helping to save up to 3,378 lives.

The ‘Bleed4Blue’ campaign will run from Wednesday 1 December until the end of February 2022 and challenges police from across Australia to take part to see which state or territory can donate the most blood.

Since its inception, the Bleed4Blue campaign has generated more than 15,093 blood donations and helped save over 45,000 lives.

Creative arts industry left disappointed by Government

By Tara CAMPBELL THE Australian Government has responded to an open letter calling for a vital reform in the way that the Arts and Creative Industries is represented in the Federal Parliament of Australia.

However, Australian artists James Bustar, Mark McConville and Lindsay Webb, have been left disappointed and dismayed by the government’s response to the plight of the arts and creative industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The initial open letter was sent to Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher on 11 August 2021, before being sent to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier of Victoria Dan Andrews.

“It also keeps readers up to date with events like the popular NSW Seniors Festival and school holidays.”

Legal Aid NSW’s Acting CEO Monique Hitter said the diary was a critical resource for older people and the most popular publication the agency produces.

Stories show NSW seniors have the write stuff A GRANDMOTHER’S enthusiasm for children’s tales inspired by her own Nanna is among 100 short narratives selected for the new edition of Seniors’ Stories.

Minister for Seniors Natalie Ward said the book, which showcases a selection of stories every year from authors aged in their sixties to nineties, is now in its seventh edition.

Another successful campaign was the Arts Awareness Collaboration video named ‘If 2020 was a flight’ where Bustar invited artists to strip bare to illustrate they had been ‘stripped bare’ from their work.

Bustar said that nothing could have prepared him for the heavy price the Australian arts community would pay with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has affected every aspect of the arts and entertainment sector, everyone from shoemakers for production shows, to lighting designers, to circus performers.

“Entertainment must live on and we must stand to get our industry back on the road.

“There are so many entertainers (and other industries) who have had to step into other jobs to just financially get through this situation.

“This industry needs a voice,” James said.

Bustar is pleased with the recent news from Create NSW who have announced Round 1 of its 2021/22 Arts and Cultural Funding Program, which will share $9.37 million amongst 198 recipients.

“This is a step in the right direction and I hope that this funding will help struggling artists in NSW,” he said.

Mice Support extended into 2022

THE NSW Government has announced that the mice bait rebates for farmers, small businesses and households have been extended into 2022, while primary producers will now be able to make multiple claims for zinc phosphide purchases, up to the $10,000 cap.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the changes ensured the mice bait rebates would benefit those in the bush who need it most ahead of a potential postharvest surge.

“The reports we are getting indicate mice numbers are down, but we can’t be complacent, which is why we’ve extended the deadline,” Mr Toole said.

“Under the changes, households and small businesses will have until 31 January to claim up to $500 or $1,000 respectively to help meet the cost of mice baits, traps and cleaning materials bought after 1 February 2021.

“Primary producers, who can claim up to $10,000 in zinc phosphide based bait

rebates, will also have until 31 January next year to claim.

“This change means farmers can better protect crops from any resurgence in mice numbers.

“More than 52,500 households and 6,500 small businesses have taken advantage of this rebate worth more than $31 million so please get your applications in,” Mr Toole said.

Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said the primary producer rebates had proven very successful so far, and were critical in helping keep numbers down.

“Now is not the time for farmers to be doing paperwork, they should instead be focused on managing their properties through harvest and rain events,” Mr Marshall said.

“Farmers did the right thing and baited with zinc phosphide early, ahead of the current harvest, and they will now be able to make multiple claims up to the $10,000 cap and get cash flow support sooner.

“The experts are also telling us, although the

number of mice has reduced, it is critical to make this harvest as clean as possible to reduce available food and shelter – which is why we’ve

The Australian Institute of Criminology states, “Drugs have been used to facilitate sexual assault in Australia and abroad.

“Offenders sometimes covertly spike their victim’s drink in order to incapacitate them, typically at a party or a bar.

“Drugs misused in this way include prescription drugs such as Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), as well as illegal drugs such as gammahydroxybutyrate (GHB), a steroid alternative for bodybuilders.

“Rohypnol is prescribed for insomnia in Australia, and in response to its misuse as a date rape drug, the

AN alarming new trend has hit the Hunter with women reporting that they have been injected with a drug while out at bars – the practice is called needle spiking.

Needle spiking has been prevalent overseas for some time, however there have

Mr Scott commended the parks for their commitment to conserving water.

By Gordon GRAINGER THE year 2021 could easily qualify for Queen Elizabeth’s description as ‘Annus Horribilis’.

We were unable to hold regular meetings with the Progress Association, the Southern Area Reference Group and the Myall River Action Group.

We would guess many other groups within our community experienced similar difficulties.

However, there was a lot of paddling under the water and we are pleased to be able to report a few of our hits and misses.

Council elections were held in December and results should be known by 21 December.

At this stage, it appears we may have lost the services of our two long time Councillors, Hutchinson and Roberts, resulting in the new

Community Group Report - December 2021 Council under the guidance of Taree centric Councillors, who may not give a fig for our miniscule population of only 5% of the LGA. This then raises the question of seceding to Port Stephens LGA which makes sense geographically and also ensuring our representation under a ward system.

This proposal was raised at a recent Council meeting and rejected by the majority of Councillors.

Most of us do not know that Port Stephens Council has responsibility to the high-water mark along the north shore of the Port (Jimmys Beach) and such an outcome would solve the fractured town of Karuah.

The Progress Association held its’ AGM in December and welcomed a new committee headed by Bruce Murray as President and Trevor Jennings as Vice-President.

It is a healthy outcome in welcoming new faces on the Committee, who extend a welcome to new members invited to join the Association.

Our very talented ladies have painted great murals on the convenience building in Hawks Nest as well as improving the look of drab telegraph poles with our characteristic flannel flower.

Another group of enthusiastic gardeners have undertaken the transformation of the park adjacent to the Community Hall, which is now showing a great and colourful display.

The Progress Association Pool SubCommittee is working on a roof design to be sent to architects for finalisation.

A meeting with Kate Washington has been organised to seek her support and potential government grant applications for seed funding will be made.

The hope is early next year when a final design can be presented to the community for endorsement.

The Free Clinic Bus which provides free transport for all medical, dental appointments in Newcastle, as well as visits to patients in hospitals has been forced to suspend their service, due to Covid.

They are pleased to announce they are back.

The restart will be from 17 January and will pick up from homes within this community.

This wonderful service is free of charge to all, although a small contribution can help.

The embankment near the toilet block on Marine Dr has in part been repaired.

The corner of Coupland and Myall Streets, a potential accident spot, is now showing the beginnings of repair much to the relief of nearby residents.

The BBQ shelter on Marine Dr is also showing signs of pending repair in time for the holiday influx.

We also received a new fish cleaning table for Moira Pde ramp.

Our misses, still on the drawing board, include the one-way footpath traffic on the Singing Bridge.

Maintenance of the same bridge and the new ramp in Tea Gardens are still in the design stage.

We are still waiting for Transport NSW to install warning lights on the turn off from M1 to Myall Way and Kate Washington is pursuing the poor response.

Bulahdelah PA have reported that new gateway signage has been installed on Southern and Northern approaches to the town just in time for the Christmas rush.

Our community based Myall Coast Radio has had a bumper year with committed sponsors, presenters and an increasing audience.

AUSTRALIA is about to embark on a national plan to cater to the needs of those with disabilities.

The NSW Government has welcomed the release of the Australian Disability Strategy 2021-2031, announced in conjunction with the International Day for People with Disability.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said, “The disability community has seen significant change in the past decade, and it is appropriate that governments continue to update their frameworks for creating more inclusive and accessible communities,” Mr Henskens said.

“Importantly, both the national strategy and the NSW plan focus on supporting all people with disability, recognising that not every person with disability will access support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).”

Australia’s Disability Strategy outlines seven areas for action, including: employment and financial security; inclusive homes and communities; safety, rights and justice; personal and community support; education and learning; health and wellbeing; and community attitudes.

The release coincides with the International Day of People with Disability, which is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements and contributions of more than 1.3 million people with disability in NSW. “NSW leads the nation when it comes to supporting people with disability – we were the first state to implement a Disability Inclusion Plan and have been at the forefront of rolling out of the NDIS,” Mr Henskens said.

“We will continue working hard to improve services and support for people with disability to help increase their social and economic participation across the State.”

The Physical Disability Council of NSW said the Strategy sets an ambitious agenda of priorities but does not answer recent calls to address high rates of poverty experienced by people with disabilities and those who care for them, who rely on income support.

CEO of the Physical Disability Council, Ms Serena Ovens said, ‘The new Australia’s Disability Strategy appears to be a step forwards in meeting Australia’s commitments under the UNCRPD by increasing the accountability of the broader community in realizing the rights of our members.

“While there is much that is positive about the Strategy, it has a clear agenda on supporting those who can study and work.

“It is important that the Strategy champions the rights of all people with disability, irrespective of who they are or what they can or cannot do.

“We look forward to working with the NSW government to ensure set targets are monitored and outcomes achieved.”

Renewal and Reconnect in 2022 - Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association DEAR News Of The Area and community,

THIS is my first letter as the new President of the HNTG Progress Association.

Our Annual General Meeting was conducted 6 December 2021 and

was well attended with elections conducted for the 2022 committee.

I would like to thank the outgoing committee and welcome our new committee: Trevor Jennings (Vice President), Michael O’Brien (Secretary), and

chargers in regional areas may help local businesses get more customers in the door.

The NSW Government

is offering to install a Fully Funded EV Charger to local businesses to help pull in more business.

As a local EV owner,

I have to drive to Karuah to charge up my Electric Vehicle.

Tea Gardens has a bigger population than

Karuah, and draws more tourists than Karuah, so why NOT have a local EV charger here in Tea Gardens?

BCS hosts Year 7 Orientation On Wednesday 1 December Bulahdelah Central School welcomed incoming Year 7 students for Orientation Day.

Congratulations go to the Lady Vets Champion and Division 1 winner for 2021 – Annie Benton, with runnerup being Jo Buttrey.

Rural Crime Prevention Team awarded ISSRC award

THE NSW Police Force Rural Crime Prevention Team has been awarded the 2021 ISSRC Policy, Practice and Engagement Award.

The International Society for the Study of Rural Crime (ISSRC) is made up of scholars, students and practitioners

from around the world with an interest in research aimed at reducing crime in all its forms in rural areas.

The ISSRC launched its annual awards program in 2020, offering awards in three categories: The Joseph F. Donnermeyer New Scholar Award, The ISSRC Research Student Award and The ISSRC Policy,

Practice and Engagement Award.

State Rural Crime Coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside said that the team are humbled by the award which highlights the NSW Police Force’s commitment to tackling rural crime.

“The yacht sailed slowly up to Cabbage Tree Island but were stuck for four hours getting around Cabbage Tree Island, off Bennett’s Beach at Hawks Nest.

“It picked up on the wind again around 9AM on Saturday morning south of Port Stephens and arrived back at Shark Island at 7PM on Saturday evening, 34th overall on handicap,” Chris said.

Steve is looking forward to sailing his fifth Sydney to Hobart this year.

STEVE Taylor is a Tea Gardens resident and crewman on Sebastian Bohm’s TP52 ‘Smuggler’.

On the weekend of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December Steve participated in the 172 Nautical Mile 2021 Sydney to Cabbage Tree Island, a prerequisite race for the 2021 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which begins on 26 December 2021.

“A fleet of 65 yachts left from Shark Island in Sydney Harbour at 7PM on Friday 5 December night and sailed north to Port Stephens.

“This was the first overnight race for the Sydney fleet in a year as last

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By John SLATER 6 DECEMBER The combined Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs Presentation Night was held this evening.

With a good representation from both Clubs attending.

Presentation Night as the name suggests, is the night that both Clubs honour and acknowledge the winners and runners-up of the various

Club competitions run during the year.

There were many highlights of the evening but for me the story behind the men’s Major Singles trophy deserved some attention.

The participants in the Club Major Singles play for the honour of having their name inscribed on the Noel Cover Memorial Trophy.

This year it was won, again, by Jeff Baker.

Karuah Bowlers THOSE who have stuck with the reports provided by local Bowlers in these types of stories would be familiar with the term “The Bowling Year”.

It pretty much resets each January and rolls (pun intended) through, with the same events, in the same order, in much the same months, each and every year.

Turns out that 2022 will be quite unique.

“What with 18 months of COVID-19, the calendar this coming year will be one out of the box with different events, all over the place,” Karuah Bowls Club President Jim Healey said December 2021 saw Karuah bowlers compete in the last Club Championship event of the year, a gripping final in the mixed pairs.

Pam Cembala and Peter Joass got away to a strong start in hot and muggy conditions on a slow green.

Post came back in the mid ends but Pam and Pete kicked away again in the 18th and 19th ends, ending up with a solid win.

Both teams had some solid wins in the lead up games and with the stop start nature of the comp, it was a good one to win.

A good crowd stayed and watched the game after the Thursday gala in the pleasant and aircon cooled area behind the glass in the bar, with both winners and runners up being widely applauded by all on their return to the bar.

2022 will see for the first time Triples, Minor Singles and (again) Mixed Pairs Championships, kicking off ‘early’ in the new year (the least shall be the first).

Pennants will be played much later from mid August, and the usually early 4’s and both Minor and Major Singles Championships played at a much later stage

As a result of the topsyturvy calendar, social Galas organised by the Men’s Club at Karuah will recommence in January on Thursday 6 with names of members and visitors in by 09:30 am and cards called at 10:00 am.

Those who are looking for a new year light but energetic workout, social stimulation, fresh air and sunlight should come down to the Karuah RSL to give bowling a try.

“A fun morning, new friendships and perhaps a cool drink afterwards are on offer to new or experienced bowlers alike,” Club Secretary Greg Mungoven said.

It was fitting that Noel was represented on the night by his daughter, Sandra Hagan.

Congratulations to all those who received awards for the 2021 season.

Another significant event during the evening was the naming of the Men’s Club 'Clubman of the Year'.

I’m sure there would not be one dissenting voice in the Club when it was announced that this prestigious award went to our amazing Games Secretary Rob Young.

Rob is a great communicator and has a direct line to the 'man upstairs' in steering the Club’s yearly programme through the vagaries of the weather and navigating the Club through constraints imposed on us courtesy of Covid.

Congratulations Rob well deserved!

The Garden Eatery catered

for the event, and it must be reported that the meals were excellent and served in an efficient and timely manner.

We are indeed fortunate to have the Garden Eatery at our Club.

8 December Today saw 40 bowlers take to the synthetic green with the grass still a bit heavy following 25mm of rain the night before.

The morning winners were decided on 'highest winning margin' with Geoff Page, Ron Rowe and Dennis Ashbridge successful with a 15-point margin.

The afternoon winners were Rob Jones, Peter Campbell and Denis Wilberforce with the result determined by 'lowest winning score'.

They won with 10 points.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Mark Nightingale.

This week will be the last week of organised bowls for the year with bowls resuming on 12 January 2022.

BELLINGEN Riverwatch (BR) has released new river condition reports for the waterways of Bellingen Shire for National Water Week, which runs from October 18-24, 2021.

The 17 partners that work together to lead BR, one of the largest water quality monitoring programs taking place in NSW, report the findings of the last four years of citizen science data collected by 43 local volunteers at 30 sites across the Bellinger and Kalang catchments.

IT was celebration time last week at the Golf Club for the Hawks Nest Lady Vets with a fun novelty game followed by their annual Presentation day.

With 80 lady players in attendance for the presentation of Championship trophies for 2021, they were able to enjoy a lovely luncheon provided by the new PK’s restaurant.

Ladies president Pat Dodd, thanked all in attendance for their support throughout what was a challenging season.

“It was pleasing to see so many of the senior ladies still being able to get out onto the course to play their golf and stay active throughout the covid lockdown period.

“Well done ladies,” she said.
