Write by the River – local book launched

Worldwide tour stays local

By Sandra MURRAY LAUNCHING a beautiful book of local stories and poems is an auspicious occasion, and this event was just that, with most members of the Myall University of the 3rd Age (U3A) Writers’ Group and local MP Kate Washington attending the event held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall last Saturday.

Kate, who also wrote the Foreword in Write by the River, spoke first at the launch, said, “The beautiful Myall River provided the inspiration for this collection of stories, poems and images.

I never cease to be impressed by the work and vitality of the University of the Third Age. Keep engaged, stay connected and keep learning.”

Write by the River is a locallybased anthology of 48 poems, short stories, and the odd recipe, written by 21 members of the U3A, all inspired by the stunning Myall River.

BUSINESS was booming this past long weekend and week of school holidays thanks to an influx of visitors to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest area.

Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group said that in his 20 years of living in Tea Gardens he’d never seen the area so busy in October.

“This long weekend and school holidays the community was inundated with visitors,” he said.

“Car parking spots along Marine Drive were all taken over at lunch time in particular and we noticed a lot of boat traffic.”

“I also understand that the local camping areas and rental accommodations were all fully booked.”

Ben Hanson, owner of Tea Gardens Hotel, said it was a stressful yet successful long weekend.

“It was definitely busier than pre-COVID long weekends, it’s almost as busy as the Christmas period,” said Mr Hanson.

I am thrilled at the dedication and poetry in the book’.

Narelle Hawkes wrote the story In Praise of Pelicans, sharing, “I love them…To me they are endlessly fascinating, with their quaint appearance, not to forget their funny antics.”

Maggie Buchannan, who wrote The Last Resort, shared her insights into the creative processes behind the scenes at the launch, stating, “In 2016, Lee Anderson shared a vision of this book project which inspired, sustained and occasionally terrified us. I want to acknowledge the passion and commitment of the writers and committee who produced this beautiful book.”

The vision was brought to fruition with support from the U3A Book Committee of Ray Keipert, Sue Collingridge, Helen Fitzgerald, “With restrictions in place it was harder to operate; instead of packing people in, we were turning them away.”

“It’s important to follow all of the health and safety guidelines obviously, so we’re doing the best we can considering.”

While Mr Hanson was thrilled at the uptick in business, he hopes restrictions will further ease before the Christmas rush.

“Getting closer to Christmas is nerve-wracking,” he said.

“We’re having to hire extra staff members for shifts during these busy periods – with reduced capacity – and without supplement from the government.”

“It’s nice that we’re open but it can be frustrating turning so many people away.”

Mr Hanson also noted that many visitors said they had never been to the area before and were already wanting to come back, showing strength in the area’s tourism potential moving into summer.

By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens and Myall Lakes residents are regular citizen scientists, participating in a range of activities that record species, and even water quality.

It’s that time of the year when we get busy counting bird life.

National Bird Week, 19-25 October, is a celebration of the unique birds, of which we have many, that aren’t found anywhere else in the world.

Our region has an amazing range of birds, from the common and humble Seagulls and “Bin Chickens” (Ibis) to the majestic Pelicans and critically endangered Eastern Curlews and Pied Oystercatcher.

From 19-25 October, Australians are being asked to head into their backyards for BirdLife Australia’s annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

Participation is easy.

The data collected assists BirdLife Australia in understanding more about the birds that live where people live.

Participants simply spend 20 minutes standing or sitting in one spot and noting down the birds that you see.

You will need to count the number of each species you spot within the 20 minute period.

For example, you might see four Australian Magpies, two Rainbow Lorikeets and a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo.

If you can identify birds by their calls, please include these in your count, but if you aren’t sure of a bird without seeing it, please exclude it rather than making a guess.

You then register your tally either on the handy app or on the online webform at aussiebirdcount.org.au In 2018 Rainbow Lorikeets were the most commonly sighted birds across the country, however sightings of rare birds and migratory birds are a highlight for bird watchers and those conducting the survey.

Sean Dooley, BirdLife Australia, Editor of Australian Birdlife Magazine said, “This is an event for all Australians to participate in.

“You can count at any time of the day but morning is best because the birds have just woken up and are more active.”

“The most exciting thing is that we can still save the ones at risk of going extinct.

“I’ve seen through working at Bird Life Australia that we can turn that around,” he said.

Police Station closes for upgrade KARUAH Police would like to alert the public that the station will be temporarily closed from Tuesday 13 October until Wednesday 4 November for an amenities upgrade to be completed inside the station.

There will be no change in staffing or numbers in the Karuah area, with the region to continue to be fully serviced while the station is temporarily closed.

Port Stephens-Hunter Commander, Superintendent Chad Gillies wants to remind the community that just because the station’s doors are closed for construction, doesn’t mean the local police aren’t there.

“Our officers normally stationed at Karuah will simply relocate for the threeweek period to Raymond Terrace Police Station, to allow contractors access to the station.

“We want to assure the community that your level of service will not change, we are still present in the area and here to protect the public 24/7, 365 days a year,” Supt Gillies said.

Progress Report for area

By Gordon GRAINGER ANOTHER month has passed and we are still in lockdown, the only meeting able to be held was the Progress Assn committee where a number of issues were discussed.

We are aware that MidCoast Council has also experienced difficulties, however we understand it is business as usual.

Meetings are undertaken, decisions made and it is business as usual.

If that is the case, why can’t we get answers to issues that were raised, in some cases, years ago?

To list a few, we are still waiting on action to be taken to finish the walkway along Mirreen St Hawks Nest, the pathway along Myall St to link with the Shopping Centre.

The 40 KPH speed limit along Marine Drive.

The one-way traffic for motorised wheelchair vehicles on the Singing Bridge.

The “no standing” zone on the corner of Myall and Maxwell Streets.

Road repairs in Pindimar and elsewhere in the townships are also dragging the chain.

These are but a few of the outstanding matters and it would seem sections of Council are disconnected to other more functioning divisions.

The Progress Association is attempting to raise dialogue with management of the Engineering section.

On the positive side Progress committee members have arranged with the Garden Club to work with Council in improving and maintaining gardens within the Hawks Nest shopping precinct.

Still on the subject of Council, a proposal has been suggested to beautify the water tanks on Shearwater with murals.

This has been happening in many

country towns and it appears Midcoast Council have already begun a “tank trail” and have received funding to do two projects, which unfortunately does not include Tea Gardens.

Another future project will be a walking and trail bike track in Council land to the eastern side of Lions Lookout We are pleased to advise the two leaning posts installed for ferry use on the public wharf were removed today.

Their removal will provide a mooring area for an extra three recreational vessels.

The costs were generously met by the Myall Lakes Aquatic Club.

These posts are over 7 metres in length and will be transported by Council to the NPWL storage area near Bombah Point.

It is little known that the club conducts pro bono repair work within the Myall Lakes National Park and these posts will be used where needed.

The dredging of the “shortcut” channel will be finished by the time this issue of NOTA is published.

It is a more complete job than what was conducted in 2015 and should provide a longer period of access for the boating fraternity as well as servicing the river with the vital exchange of oceanic water.

On the subject of dredging, we have received reports of increasing sand migration further up river and it is now impacting on the ferry service.

Those reports have been forwarded to Council and in turn to RMS in the hope that corrective action can be undertaken in the near future.

It is particularly important in view of the current ferry problems and the strong possibility that a new vessel the “Wangi Queen” may be introduced to the service.

That vessel is larger than the current ferries and draws a deeper draught.

Progress has written to our State Representative, Kate Washington, in regards to the Myall Way turn off from the M1 Expressway.

The recent fatality has resurrected the call for warnings lights as was installed on the Medowie Rd intersection.

Ms Washington has confirmed she has written to RMS and is waiting on a

response.

FEDERAL Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie MP, said that last week’s Federal Budget announcement delivered a plan that will create jobs and rebuild the local economy.

In an official statement, Dr Gillespie said that a tax cut backdated to 1 July this year, would ease financial pressures on local families.

Dr Gillespie said he believed the budget would help drive a national economic recovery post COVID-19.

“The 2020-21 Budget commits a further $98 billion, including $25 billion in direct COVID-19 response measures and $74 billion in new measures to create jobs. There is no economic recovery without a jobs recovery,” he said.

Young people were seen as big winners in this year's budget, with the creation of the Jobmaker hiring credit to encourage businesses to hire younger Australians.

“The JobMaker hiring credit will be payable for up to twelve months and be immediately available to employers who hire those on JobSeeker aged 16-35.

“It will be paid at the rate of $200 per week for those aged under 30, and $100 per week for those aged between 30-35.”

Dr Gillespie also highlighted a number of key infrastructure projects in the region, due to receive funding through the 2020-21 Budget.

“Some of the major projects in the Lyne electorate include Bucketts Way and Clarence Town Road – Raymond Terrace to Dungog,” he said.

Volunteer for our Visitors During the recent school holidays, volunteers at the Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre (VIC) successfully responded to hundreds of enquiries from visitors to the beautiful Myall Lakes region.

DURING the recent school holidays, volunteers at the Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre (VIC) successfully responded to hundreds of enquiries from visitors to the beautiful Myall Lakes region.

The ongoing COVID interstate and international travel constraints have resulted in an increase of around 20% compared to the same holiday period last year.

The VIC also responded to many queries about the great lifestyle options available for permanent residents The Centre now needs more volunteers to meet the increasing need for local information sought by visitors.

Hugh Ross, a volunteer, told NOTA, “The Myall Lakes National Park continues to be a huge drawcard to this region with the native wildflowers putting on a great display for the spring season. Some of our visitors have stayed here before but for many it was their first time visiting from NSW or the ACT. I hear comments such as, “I’ve driven past before but never came in to have a look”, “Never been here before but we will definitely be back” and “What a beautiful area”.

The VIC now needs more volunteers to operate this important community and business service.

The VIC is a very safe place to volunteer with a great team.

In response to the initial COVID constraints, the VIC closed for over three months.

The MidCoast Council then conducted a comprehensive Risk Assessment of the VIC. To ensure safety, the Council installed a Sneeze Screen, provided personal protective equipment, and put in place COVID safe guidelines which are strictly followed.

The VIC re-opened for the July School Holidays and has been successfully operating since then.

Hugh added, “Volunteering at the VIC is a great safe activity where you meet people and learn about our area. We ensure all our volunteers are fully trained and supported.

Volunteering also keeps your brain active answering questions and it is so nice talking to holiday makers about this wonderful area where we reside.”

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

Myall Lake Matters

SCHOOL holidays ended well with visitors up 20% from the same time last year according to the wonderful volunteers at the Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre.

Local shops, restaurants and clubs, such as the new Seagrass Café on Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, benefited with many reporting an upsurge in visitors, which is also creating new jobs around the area.

Residents and visitors

alike are encouraged to uphold COVID safe practices, including checking in and adhering to public space and number restrictions to prevent further lockdowns.

TUESDAY 6th October: Social bowls played a game of Fours and 2 games 3 bowls triples 18 ends.

Results on all games were close.

Irene Roberts, Christine Fossey, Lyn Nightingale and Lorraine Murphy were losing by 7 shots on the 10th end, 11 v 4 bowling against Dawn Jones, Dawn May, Judi Polak and Dot Dallas.

They redeemed themselves by the last end, a drawn match 14 all.

A very close contest on the next rink Leona Clissold, Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts defeating Jan Coomer, Jill McBride

and Robyn Beaumont 17 v 14.

Jean Glover, Dorothy Thompson and Loretta Baker scraped to victory by 1 shot against Pam Gilchrist, Sheril Johnson and Kayelene Pearson 17 v 16.

Winners winning with the lowest score and then a count back on ends were Jean, Dorothy and Loretta.

Judi Polak won the raffle many thanks to the Myall Bistro & Café for donating the raffle prize.

International White Cane Day DEAR News Of The Area, ON International White Cane Day (15 October), we at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT want to highlight the need for awareness of white canes.

White Cane Day was created to highlight the important role mobility assistance devices play in helping people with low vision or blindness lead safe and independent lives.

This year, our campaign is celebrating the fun, fearless and adventurous spirit of our young Clients and cane users who live life to the fullest, with many engaging in everything from skateboarding to gymnastics.

For many people with low vision and blindness, a white cane is one of the first tools they may learn how to use as part of orientation and mobility training, and for children, a white cane is often the key to their first experiences of independence and freedom. It is a tool they will count on throughout their life.

A white cane is the mobility tool of choice for the majority of Guide Dogs Clients because of its practicality and the way it can give sensory feedback about the surrounding environment, but also its importance as a visual signifier to others in the community of low vision and blindness.

But right now, a white cane is more than a visual symbol that someone has low vision or blindness. It is also a visual symbol that the person using the white cane can’t easily maintain a 1.5-metre distance from others.

We’ve heard many stories from our Clients who are being increasingly cautious about what environments they travel in with their white cane, aware of the fact that they can’t easily see others to socially distance.

This International White Cane Day, we are asking the community to be aware of people using a white cane.

No power outage warning DEAR News Of The Area,

IT seems that a very large number of residents in Tea Gardens and I believe Hawks Nest also received SMS notifications from Essential Energy (EE) warning of a power outage from 8-45am to 4pm on 21 October. a) The information provided was minimal as to why the power outage was taking place. b) Essential Energy failed to inform the managers of the operators for Palm Lake

Resort and the Grange of the power outage.

Both Managers attempted to contact (when advised by their residents) Essential Energy for further information. However Essential Energy stated that because they were only required to give two weeks notice, which they had done, they did not have to provide any other information.

Some information was gleaned from the discussion, i.e. a third party contractor had requested the shutdown by EE to allow them to do maintenance on 'Gas switches'.

Retirement Villages operate kitchens to

cook and feed residents, but no warning was provided to the Operators or the Managers.

It was impossible to change the proposed date and it seems that Essential Energy can ride roughshod over the whole town.

They were not required to provide information to Retirement Village Management, and one wonders if they have even provided this information to businesses in the town.

Dear Kate, YOU know, yesterday I went to the local shops and saw Christmas decorations and for the first time I just thought, bring it on!

Get this damn year over with.

The only people who seem to be vaguely benefiting are psychiatrists, bottle shops and, inexplicably, Donald Trump who, despite an inability to string a sentence together and a figure akin to a blancmange has, in his own words, 'passed the highest test, the highest standards ...' and is 'in great shape'.

No, he didn't confirm this via results from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale along with some sort of Navy Seal challenge, he was simply reporting back following a helicopter joyride to a facility with around the clock mollycoddling and a cocktail of drugs.

I mean, who wouldn't be a bit euphoric?

I digress.

You and I both know that the Year 12 formal is an event that will one day be viewed through the prism of hindsight and some photos that are little pinpricks of humiliation helping you to recall crawling to receive your gift from the school (a spoon with its tempting 'esto fidelis' - be faithful to God - motto), hair dyed whiteblonde in that delightful corpse look that was big in the 80s, and a formal partner who ended up being a male stripper.

What's not to love?

In a way, because expectations are so low this year, your daughter may be pleasantly surprised. Just do something to make the night extra special.

My own daughter has asked for just two ways to remember the occasion - a sassy pair of Louboutins and a hip flask.

This year, I may not only give in to that request, but make a double purchase so we can both have a little joy.

Her half-sister Princess Feodora (Kate Fleetwood, Harlots) and the deposed French king, Louis Philippe (Vincent Regan), land on her doorstep seeking asylum. At the same time, the Chartist movement threatens the monarchy and Victoria is forced to confront the possibility that her people may wish to end her reign. 2019 Logie Award winner Coleman continues to thrill as the rather vexed Queen.

Snake season is here

NEWS Of The Area caught up with Oakvale Wildlife Park’s reptile keeper, Bailey Smith, for some of his top tips for this snake season.

“With the weather starting to warm up, there are more and more snakes coming out,” he said.

“To avoid those unwanted guests coming into your backyard there are some things you can do.”

“The first thing is to try and keep your yard tidy by removing things like sheets of tin and wood piles.”

“Keeping your gardens maintained will also reduce places for snakes to hide.”

Snake bites occur when the

animal feels threatened, and Mr Bailey said that most bites are a result of someone trying to catch or kill the snake.

“If you come across a snake in your yard you should never try to catch or kill it,” he said.

“Get all your pets and family inside and try to keep an eye on the snake and where it’s going while you call a local snake catcher to safely come and remove it from your area.”

In the Hawks Nest area, some of the most common venomous snake species are red-bellied black snakes, eastern brown snakes, death adders and tiger snakes.

There are also some nonvenomous snake species, including

coastal carpet pythons and diamond pythons.

If you do get bitten by a venomous snake, Mr Bailey said to remember these couple of things that may potentially save your life.

“First, don’t wash the bite area as it will make it hard for the doctors to determine which species of snake has bitten you,” he said.

“Bandage the whole limb – if you’re bitten on the hand for instance, bandage from the tip of your fingers all the way up to your shoulder.”

“Finally, try to restrict movement of the body or limb to slow the spread of venom and go straight to the hospital.”

THERE won’t be many prouder dads in the Bulahdelah area than Peter Billinghurst, after his son Jake took out the inaugural Galleries in the Gardens Student Art Award last week.

Jake’s winning artwork, entitled ‘Thanks, Dad’, paid tribute to Peter and the relationship the pair share.

“I wanted to make an artwork about something important to me.

“My artwork was all about my connection to my dad and how he has helped me out through all the years growing up,” said Jake.

“He has always been there supporting me.”

The work, a three-metres-high drawing, took Jake close to five months to complete.

“I went through three lead pencils right down to the nub and two rubbers.”

It’s safe to say Peter was pretty proud of his son’s work.

“He was pretty stoked, he posted on Facebook about how happy he was with it,” said Jake.

“It is for sale at the moment, but if it doesn’t sell, it will be put at home and proudly displayed.”

q Jake Billinghurst creates touching artistic tribute to his Dad

The Galleries in the Gardens Student Art Award featured works from students at the Bulahdelah Central School.

Graduating from year 12 this week, Jake is currently exploring his post school options, but plans to keep on making art.

“I will always do art and it will always be there for me because I love it.”

Following his win, Jake reserved special praise for his Visual Arts teacher, Sue Cross, for her support through the creative process.

“I would like to give a shout out to Miss Cross. Big thanks to her for her help in making it and pushing me on and helping me through the HSC.”

7 OCTOBER: It is great to see our number of players taking part in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition increasing.

The wonderful spring weather continues with 54 bowlers on the greens today including Dave Perry who has, at last, returned from behind the scrub and is looking 10 years younger.

Three teams were in the running to win today and it took a countback of ends won to determine the winners.

The team of Ron Webster, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson won the money with a commendable 20 points.

The runners-up were Mark Nightingale, Dennis Longman and Graham Reynolds.

The Myall Bistro voucher was won by Vic Garlick.

Newcastle Airport remain hopeful of runway upgrade

Newcastle Airport has reacted with cautious optimism in the absence of a Federal Government budget announcement regarding an upgrade to the runway it accesses from RAAF Base Williamtown.

NEWCASTLE Airport has reacted with cautious optimism in the absence of a Federal Government budget announcement regarding an upgrade to the runway it accesses from RAAF Base Williamtown.

Whilst there was no specific funding announced for the project, there was a significant funding pool designated for regional airports.

The upgrade, which

needs to be delivered in conjunction with scheduled Defence maintenance work being carried out next year, would see the runway upgraded to Code E status.

This would allow widebodied, long-haul aircraft to access the airport, connecting the region and northern NSW to the rest of the world.

Speaking after the budget announcement, Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock, said he

remained hopeful the airport would be able to access some of the funding earmarked in the budget for airport infrastructure.

“I remain confident that the Federal Government understands the importance of this project for the region and the nation,” he said.

“Upgrading this runway will provide the confidence and hope at a time that it is most needed. More importantly, it will deliver very tangible benefits.

"From local tourism operators and hospitality owners to agricultural producers and freight and logistics providers, this project will drive significant jobs and huge economic return well into the future.

Mr Cock said he felt confident the government had a positive vision for the Hunter region.

“Ours is the largest regional economy in Australia and the airport is ready to step up and play

a key role in ensuring it remains so.

“Importantly the window of opportunity for this upgrade is now.

The funding needs to be confirmed before the next budget cycle, with a drop-dead date in the first quarter of next year.

“With that in mind, we will be working hard and engaging with other regional leaders to put together a compelling case as to why this project

MR SMALL’S worldwide tour has been running for the past 10 years, travelling to destinations across Australia.

The group was originally formed by Glen Newman; a bus driver and ex-football player with a great sense of humour, referred to by his friends as Mr Small, who rallied everyone together as a way to keep in touch with good friends and workmates.

Today, the group is made up of 12 members dispersed across towns and states.

The trip is normally run over four days and has involved everything from football matches and race meetings, to bowls, golf, or general touring.

The group was unable to do their regular trip this year due to COVID-19, so decided to bring the ‘tour’ to Bulahdelah.

Mr Small group member Peter Ellery, said that the members all have a common belief that life is no rehearsal, and to embrace life.

“With the support of our wives and partners, we’ve been able to travel through life embracing
