THE land known to Hawks Nest locals as ‘The Koala Corridor’ on either side of Myall Street has been sold.

For the first time in decades, the privately owned land near the Singing Bridge adjoining the Jean Shaw Koala Reserve has been sold by Commercial Collective, being deemed as “a beachside village development opportunity”.

This news has not been taken lightly with many taking to social media to voice their opinions and advocate against development in the area.

Literature Awards 2021 THE annual Port Stephens Literature Awards are now open for entry.

ongoing issues at the Moira Parade boat ramp in Hawks Nest, urging MidCoast Council to provide the necessary funds to upgrade the ramp.

Recently, a small amount of development has begun to take place on the ramp and adjoining car park but many believe that this won’t be enough.

Local engineer Kurt Bowen commented on the urgent need of repairs in 2018 but it wasn’t until a recent confrontational letter to the Council that any action was taken.

Mr Bowen described ongoing damage to boats, trailers and cars due to the unsafe conditions.

“I know of one trailer that was completely destroyed on it, it got hooked up on the bottom of the ramp.

“Other boats have fallen off the end of the ramp and people have had to winch it out due to the fact that the ramp has fallen away,” Kurt said.

Residents and tourists are now avoiding the ramp due to their concerns, including large potholes and general safety, and are urging MidCoast Council to view how Port Stephens Council maintains and cares for their boat ramps.

“I know of people who have been hurt on the ramp and I, myself have cut my feet open on the ramp and I just wonder how injured someone is going to have to get before adequate action is taken on,” Kurt questioned.

The voices of concern are not only limited to an upgrade of the ramp, but many believe

that there is not adequate parking or care to the car park, given the fact that Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest brings in a large amount of water-users.

“The money that comes into that town from tourism and the money that people are paying in rates seems to be not allocated to Tea Gardens very well.”

LOCAL organisations on the Myall Coast can now apply for funding to support local community projects under the Berejiklian Government’s Infrastructure Grants program. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the impacts of COVID-19 are still being widely felt and support for struggling community organisations will remain a priority for this latest round. “$12.5 million is available in 2021/22 for new or upgraded facilities across sport and recreation, arts and culture, disaster readiness and community infrastructure,” Mr Martin said.

“This is an opportunity for local organisations to apply for funding for projects that will provide long-term benefits to the community.

“Infrastructure Grants can fund

construction, alteration, renovation, completion and fit-out of buildings and community infrastructure.

“Projects funded may include new or upgraded sports grounds, museums, theatres, homeless shelters and evacuation centres.”

Mr Martin said community infrastructure is now a standalone category and it can be used for spaces like halls and meeting rooms, community transport, and infrastructure that supports youth, disability, mental health, homelessness, and domestic violence services.

“This is about connecting the community, fostering participation in sport, recreation and arts, and boosting social inclusion and disaster resilience,” Mr Martin said.

Since 2015, the NSW Government has

funded more than 441 community projects worth $73 million under the Infrastructure Grants program.

These grants are made possible by the Clubgrants Category 3 Fund which reinvests profits from registered clubs’ gaming machines into community projects.

It is possible to split the superannuation entitlements of married and de facto couples as part of their property settlement adjustment.

Such splits need to be the subject of a Court order or a Superannuation Agreement entered into strictly in accordance with the Family Law Act. Different rules apply to different types of funds, as the nature, form and characteristics of funds differ.

When there is an order for a base amount to be split from spouse A's superannuation entitlements in favour of spouse B, the treatment of adjustments made in favour of spouse B is different if spouse A's superannuation entitlements have been in a SMSF or a Defined Benefit Fund.

When the splitting order is served on the trustee of the SMSF or Defined Benefit Fund, the trustee will generally hold the adjusted base amount for payment to spouse B until the member satisfies a condition of release. In the interim the trustee must add interest to the base amount pending payment in accordance with determinations of the Government Actuary.

The Family Law (Superannuation) (Interest Rate for Adjustment Period) Determination 2021 was recently released and an interest rate of 5.7% per annum will now be added to the relevant base amounts in the financial year beginning 1 July 2021.

Donation of Rare World War Two Artefacts OVER the past few months, Karuah RSL Sub Branch has been the beneficiary of a large number of military artefacts and memorabilia.

The donations by many local residents have been delivered to the Karuah RSL Club since it reopened and the community have seen the larger and improved display cabinets.

Of particular note is the recent donation of a Commemorative Medallion originally presented to the officers and crew of the World War 2 Royal Australian Navy Cruiser HMAS Sydney.

The medallions were struck and presented to 645 crew members upon their return from fighting in the Mediterranean.

Most of the medallions that were presented to the crew of the Sydney are in a war grave at the bottom of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia after a Naval battle between HMAS Sydney and the German Raider Kormoran on 19 November 1941.

Both ships sank in the battle and all 645 crew members of Sydney perished.

After significant research undertaken by the Sub Branch, it is believed now only three medallions are known to exist with all other medallions going down with the ship.

The Karuah RSL Sub Branch is privileged to be the custodians of one of these rare pieces of Australian Naval History.

The donation was made by the Aubrey family of Allworth, after finding the HMAS SYDNEY Silver Medallion buried in the backyard on their property, only revealed after heavy rain washed away covering soils.

“Whilst it is the ongoing privilege of Karuah RSL Sub-Branch to be the custodian and protector of our local and national

military history, we cannot do so without the support and contributions of local residents,” Peter Fidden, President of Karuah RSL said.

“We see the wonderful display of artefacts and memorabilia being a way to keep alive the service of previous generations and to educate future generations.

“I would particularly like to thank the Aubrey family and all other donors who have

provided wonderful donations of these rare and in some cases, irreplaceable articles,” said Mr Fidden.

“We encourage all local residents that may have anything of military historical value, rather than throwing them out, deliver them to the Karuah RSL Club so they may be restored and placed on display in the Club,” Mr Fidden said.

Myall Coast local wins TAFE Award ZOË Tolhurst is precisely what the early childcare industry needs and was recently acknowledged by TAFE NSW for precisely that.

ZOË Tolhurst is precisely what the early childcare industry needs and was recently acknowledged by TAFE NSW for precisely that.

Awarded with the 2021 TAFE NSW Trainee of the Year, Zoë was recognised for her dedication and passion for her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Changing from graphic design to early childcare education she took on an eighteen month course finishing in just eight months.

“I really didn’t expect to receive the award and I had to get into my head that I deserved it,” she told News Of The Area.

Like many young people she wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted to do until one day it just fell into place.

“I was with a tennis coach at the time waiting for one of my coaching lessons.

“I was watching him with the kids and I loved the interactions he had and over a period of time, it really inspired me to give it a go.”

She quit her job as a graphic designer and became a tennis coach and during that time, developed a passion for working with kids.

Changed traffic conditions from Coolongolook to Karuah MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions next week on the Pacific Highway from Coolongolook to Karuah to carry out

Work is set to start on Monday 12 July and includes inspections and maintenance of bridges on this section of the highway.

Work will be carried

out from 7am to 5pm on weekdays and is expected to be completed in one week, weather permitting.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Seniors Card Extended

THE NSW Government has extended the Seniors Regional Travel Card for another two years.

Most recipients currently use the card to buy petrol although other travel agencies also accept it.

A new card is needed for each $250 allocation and the third card can be applied for in January 2022.

An online or phone check of your current balance can be made but any credit left at the expiry date will be kept by the government.

It is not transferable.

The eligibility has been extended to those on the disability or carers pensions.

Roos take the win in Memorial Match FROM Page 20

The Rooettes had a friendly match against the ‘A’ grade Macquarie Scorpions as both teams were unable to play their respective teams due to COVID lockdown.

Macquarie scored first to take the score to 6-0.

Not long before halftime, Karuah's Lexi Beaton scored with Ebony Oakley converting to equal the score at the break at 6-6.

The Rooettes did well to hold the Scorpions out until just over halfway through the second half, before they scored two converted tries to take the full time score Macquarie 18 - Karuah 6.

Well done ladies, a great effort.

The Rooettes are at home next Saturday against Maitland United, kick off at 2pm.

The Karuah Roos and the Raymond Terrace Magpies had a lot to play for in their matchup, with the Ben Langdon Memorial Man of the Match trophy up for grabs by the player of the game.

A minute's silence was held for Ben before the kick off with his three brothers all taking the field.

Pat Maloney then crossed the white line, with Sam Croese converting for 10-0.

The Magpies were next to score, with two converted tries to be in front 12-10.

Just before half time the Magpies got a penalty goal to take the halftime score to Raymond Terrace 14 - Karuah 10.

The second half saw the rain return, making things a little slippery all round.

Pat Maloney then crossed again for his second of the game to equal the scores at 1414.

Maloney then completed his hattrick, with Sam Croese converting again to put the Roos in front 20-14.

The Magpies fought back with a converted try to equal the score again at 20-20.

With the Roos crowd spurring them on, Luke Perry scored with under five minutes to go.

Croese was again clinical with the conversion to take the full time score to Karuah 26 - Raymond Terrace 20.

What a great game with a lot of passion and pride shown by both teams, well done.

The Ben Langdon Memorial Men of the Match Award went to the three Langdon brothers.

It’s an entertaining theme, but audiences will be hungry to read between the lines and find the colour in the supposedly black-andwhite situation. Someone will prove to have the brains and brawn to conquer the competition, but it will undoubtedly involve copious amounts of sweat and tears. Filmed in Queensland, the contestants include AFL legend Gavin Wanganeen, along with glamorous big wave surfer Flick Palmateer, prison officer Dani and children’s author Wai. By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 6 July: Prior to bowls today the Annual General Meeting was held, apart from Bette Saillard being selected as Vice President there were no other changes to the Executive Committee or the Social Committee, there are a few “new faces” on the Match/Selection Committee.

Following the meeting the ladies played three Bowls Pairs 18 ends, with some interesting results.

Sheila Rattray and Karen Green had a twelve shot lead over Lyn Nightingale and Kathie Rimmer, 15 v 3 by the 11th end.

Things didn’t improve much from here for Lyn and Kathie losing this contest by seventeen points, the final score 23 v 6.

Irene Roberts and Wendy Jones were still in the game on the 5th end four all, bowling against Ingrid Luck and Bette Saillard.

Ingrid and Bette, took control from this point, gaining 24 points, winning 28 v 11.

DURING these times of a pandemic we have become very adept at changing our behaviours quickly to suit the times, for example, bridge players now wear masks during the entire time of a face to face bridge session.

Our tearoom is closed once again with members bringing their own refreshments and hygiene and social distancing rules apply.

However, trials these may be, our members continue to support the bridge sessions with due care and vigilance for one another and, with safety the main priority.

The tale on the next rink is much the same as the previous ones, a big win to Bev Dunn and Judy McGavock 33 v Sheril Johnson and Bev Rhodes 5.

Dorothy Thompson and Karen McPhie led all the way v Judi Polak and Dale Winter, on the 11th end they were in front by 12 shots, their winning margin was reduced to 7 by the finish, 17 v 10.

A close game on Rink Six, till the 13th end Jean Glover and Jill McBride were nine all against Pam Gilchrist and Sandra Leisemann.

The 14th end resulted in the two J’s scoring four points and ultimately winning 16 v 12.

The winners on the day, winning with the lowest margin were Jean and Jill.

The winner of the raffle was Lynda Richards, many thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

Thursday 8 July: Format for bowls four games three bowls Triples, 12 ends.

Carol Hayden, Pam Gilchrist and Lynda Richards had a lead of 12 shots by the 5th end, 14 v 2 in their match against Francis Betar, Bev Rhodes and Bette Saillard.

By the 11th end the difference had been reduced to five.

The final end resulted in Lynda’s team scoring five shots winning 20 v 10.

Lyn Nightingale, Jean Glover and Karen McPhie eleven defeated Sheila Rattray, Irene Roberts and Sandra Leisemann four.

Dawn Jones, Dale Winter and Robyn Beaumont were ahead from start to finish winning by nine shots against Dawn May, Lyn Green and Maynie Roberts, 14 v 5.

Ingrid Luck, Kathie Rimmer and Robyn Webster also held the lead all the way claiming victory v Sheril Johnson, Dorothy Thompson and Jill McBride 16 v 8.

Saturday 10 July: Weekend Pennants both our teams bowling in this Competition were to have home games but due to the weather conditions the games were transferred to Raymond Terrace.

HOW do we handle people who just drop in, unannounced?

We are on a large block with no fencing and that seems to invite impromptu visits. Help!

Do you have the smell of baking bread and freshly-ground coffee wafting through the door?

Is there a sun-filled deck with a wicker lounge and plump pillows, just perfect for lounging away the morning?

Do you have French Doors, always open to let in the morning breeze and people without a clue as to basic social etiquette?

I feel maybe you should take the approach of our Premier and implement an immediate lockdown.

Perhaps put a QR code on the front door and a sign that says no more than four people at a time for health and safety reasons (that basically excludes everyone except your immediate family).

Have a sign at the front driveway alerting people that only essential services are permitted.

At the rate greater Sydney is going, it won't be long, unfortunately, before we are also once again in lockdown and then your desire to have no impromptu visitors will be mandated (don't listen to the wacko lizard people flogging juice cleanses), the government can and will do everything it can to make our community safe, even if others feel it their personal right to roam, maskless, and clueless.
