By Doug CONNOR SINCE first hitting airwaves in September 2020, Myall Coast Radio has been delighting locals with its mix of great music, local perspectives, and familiar presenters.

Now, nearly seven months on from that initial on-air broadcast, Myall Coast Radio President Chris Lock says the station is ready to go from strength to strength in 2021.

Mr Lock said the stations committee and volunteers are working hard to continuously improve the quality and diversity of content on 87.8FM. “We have about 5 or 6 presenters at the moment, with the same amount in the pipeline,” Mr Lock said.

“We have also started to network, to create specific content for specific programs, which is absolutely fantastic.”

Mr Lock said to expect a range of new shows and presenters to be added in coming months.

“We now do the news content every hour, then we also are out there doing a lot of other things in terms in the community.

“We are looking to get out there with content that we believe the community will want to hear.

“Things about lifestyle, sports, hobbies.

“We are also introducing some local personalities,” Mr Lock said.

With the recent arrival of extra recording equipment, the studio is now equipped to do live interviews.

In future, Mr Lock would like to see ‘roving reporters’ in the field, bringing interviews with the community to our local airwaves.

Another recent addition to the station's programming, is the reading of Myall Coast News Of The Area on air on a Friday morning at 10am.

“This will be a great boost for people who have some difficulty with reading.

DENIS Clifford, Assistant commissioner, New South Wales Police Force spokesperson for vulnerable communities is urging seniors to stay safe and protect themselves as crimes against seniors is at a high.

“To be safe from crime and violence is a fundamental right for everyone in our community.

“As we grow older, several factors can impact on our confidence and quality of life, so by taking a few extra precautions and by being prepared when a risk is identified can go a long way to improving the feeling of safety when you're out in public spaces or at home,” said Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford.

The New South Wales Police supported by the NSW Government Department of Justice provided the following recommendations.

When leaving the house: ‘Always be alert when travelling on public transport. Sit at the front of the bus and always try to travel in groups of friends if possible.

‘Never carry large sums of money in public.

“Obviously it’s a very dedicated team on the committee.

“We have raised over $100,000 through seed funding, fundraising and advertising, which in the pandemic climate is quite good.

“The people we have on the committee have come from broadcasting backgrounds and from a high level of business, so we have a good balance.”

As the station grows, so does the need for volunteers, and Mr Lock welcomes the community to get involved.

“We have a great team of volunteers but are always looking for more people to help out.

“Our membership is sitting at close to 70 people, and membership costs $10 per year.”

March, an initiative by the Tea Gardens Slipway Association to improve the facility’s environmental compliance.

This is to ensure that the slipway can comply with all environmental legislation concerning marine slipway’s operations and all standards well into the future.

“Today, the Management Committee charged with the responsibility of managing the slipway facility, is

taking on its biggest ever challenge; upgrading the facility to meet 21st century environmental requirements,” said Tea Gardens Slipway Association President Paul Bendy.

“While the upgrade will be costly, the critical need to retain the last operational slipway in our area is vital to the ongoing health of our local waterways.”

Mr Bendy said the slipway is an integral part of life on the Myall Coast.

“It is part of our river q

foreshore and as such is both a local resource, a tourist attraction and an emergency response facility.

“While its prime purpose is to service locally owned vessels, it is also available to visiting vessels if they experienced difficulties, thereby threatening the river environment.”

“While there have been brief periods when the slipway has been closed, the reasons for the closure have always been overcome.

“If the Myall River and Lakes are to have resources to support protecting their health, the Tea Gardens Slipway along with the effluent barge “Independence” are the vital and much needed facilities to ensure this achievement,” said Mr Bendy.

The slipway facilities have seen many improvements over the years to ensure it is able to deliver the service safely and effectively.

“The Tea Gardens Slipway cradle has supported many and varied vessels over the years,” he said.

“Vessels are taken out of the water for their annual maintenance and inspection to ensure they are safe and reliable.

The upgrade to the Slipway’s facilities is underway.

“Boat sizes, while generally grown in size over the years, have always been able to be accommodated at the well designed slipway.”

Mr Bendy said the Myall region had a rich history of slipways, dating back to settlement.

“The Myall River has a history of many slipways, both private and commercial, since the area was settled more than 100 years ago.

“They were established in many locations such as Winda Woppa, Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens and up the Myall River as far as Tamboi,” he said.

One of the slipways located at Winda Woppa was part of the Birdwood Mill, owned by Allen Taylor and Company.

The mill slipway was used to maintain the local drogher fleet that supplied the mill with timber.

However, after a devastating fire in December 1950 followed

by a downturn in the timber industry, the Birdwood Mill ceased operation in 1954.

As a result of the mill closure, the slipway lay idle for a period until some local people got together and decided to relocate the slipway to its present site in Tea Gardens.

There have been varying owners and/or operators managing the facility until March 1980, when a group of local boat owners began operating the slipway as a community recreational facility.

Then in 1988, the same boat owners applied to become an Incorporated Association under the jurisdiction of NSW Fair Trading.

Today, while the slipway is still managed by the same Incorporated Association, it continues to be a vital part of our community’s basic facilities.

The Slipway is expected to be closed until July.

THE Manning River Helmeted Turtle is a strikingly beautiful medium-sized freshwater turtle recognised by its distinct colouring.

It has yellow markings on the underside of its shell and tail, as well as a clear yellow stripe from the jaw down to the neck of the shell.

This little turtle is known as one of Australia’s great ancestors estimated to be around 55 million years old.

It is quite extraordinary that this little turtle is only found in the Manning River catchment on the NSW northern tablelands.

These turtles live in the upper reaches of the Manning which starts its journey to the sea from the Barrington’s.

Regrettably, the Manning River helmeted turtle was declared endangered in April 2017 and has seen a dramatic decline in recent years caused by increasing anthropogenic impacts.

Impacts such as the introduction of foxes, invasive fish, feral pigs, wild dogs, cats that raid their nests and eat the eggs and young turtles but also the mothers as they are laying

The turtles have also seen increases in illegal poaching for private collections, competition from and hybridisation with other turtles and habitat degradation causing issues with water quality, food availability and suitable nesting environments are likely to also have been affected by human use of the land in adjoining areas, causing significant environmental changes.

The Australian Government recently announced a grant of $143,500 through its Bushfire Recovery for Wildlife and Habitat Community Grants.

“Over 25 per cent of the creek habitat of the turtle was burnt in the 2019 bushfires and sadly the Manning River helmeted turtle is already at risk from threats such as loss of habitat, feral pests and disease outbreaks,” explained MidCoast Council’s Senior Ecologist, Mat Bell.

“High intensity bushfires can further threaten this species through impacts to water quality, food sources, loss of shelter habitat and increased vulnerability to predators.

Stroud’s new skate park underway WORK has commenced on the replacement of Stroud’s skatepark, which will provide a brand new facility within Stroud’s sporting hub for skateboarders by May. A new or rejuvenated skate park has been on the Stroud community’s wish list for some time, and thanks to funding allocated from the Duralie Community Fund, it is now becoming a reality.

The existing skate park is well past

its useful life, with the existing concrete surface really starting to show its age.

The new skate park will be constructed of polished concrete and include features such as hipped transition, flatbanks, small fun box, whoopty-do, roll-in and grind ledges.

Work is expected to be complete by early May, weather permitting.

Funding will be administered by a project team involving Council, Hunter Local Land Services, MidCoast to Tops Landcare and the Manning River Turtle Group.

Drought and climate change were named as the greatest threats to populations in the middle and upper catchments by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

Mummified eggs, ground baked so hard that hatchlings could not dig their way out, and yolks in some eggs cooking before hatchlings emerge, have been reported by researchers working to conserve the endangered turtles.

Marine Biologist Ryan Pereira of Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters and marine rescue and environment organisation Seashelter told News Of The Area, “It is not too late and not all doom and gloom thanks to organisations like NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, the Australian Reptile Park and Aussie Ark have created an insurance population to ensure the turtles.

“Please help and donate to these incredible organisations to ensure the security of these incredible amazing turtles that provide us with healthy river ecosystems and protect Australia’s natural history.

“Our family visited the reptile park about two months ago and they have truly set up an incredible rehabilitation and breeding program for Australian freshwater turtles.

“Anyone can visit it and see the work that's been done.

“People can also see the breeding program in action,” Pereira said.

Aussie Ark President Tim Faulkner said, “The Manning River Turtle needs substantial clean, flowing water and so we’ve created a specialised facility at the Australian Reptile Park to enable the population to build and thrive.”

It is hoped the funding will assist other at risk species including the platypus.

Seniors Festival at the Libraries THE NSW Seniors Festival has kicked off and the MidCoast has a jam packed events program in April to help celebrate the amazing contribution of older people to our communities.

“MidCoast Libraries will roll out a series of workshops across the region to help seniors become tech-savvy during the Festival,” said MidCoast Libraries Manager, Chris Jones.

“These are a great way to connect with other like-minded people, and learn the basics to navigate your smartphone or tablet advice.”

Sessions are free, but bookings are essential and you need to bring your own device.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of how to navigate your way around a smartphone with a touchscreen.

You will learn how to turn the phone on and off, make and receive calls, add a contact and look up a contact, and change the volume on the phone.

You will also learn briefly about apps, what they are,how to download them, and the costs

associated with them.

Tech Savvy Seniors is a NSW Government Initiative in partnership with Telstra and the State Library of NSW. Join the session at Tea Gardens Library on Monday, 26 April 2021 from 10:30 AM 01:00 PM. A session will also take place at Stroud Library on Tuesday, 20 April 2021 from 09:30 AM - 12:00 PM. Also in Stroud, join the team from the Manning Regional Art Gallery and become part of International Biodiversity Day to highlight endangered species by taking part in a Weaving Turtles Workshop.

As part of a global art project, your woven baby turtles will form part of a giant Manning River Helmeted Turtle installation to be situated beside the Manning River in May. All materials provided.

The workshop will run at Stroud Library from Monday, 19 April 2021 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

WHEN North Arm Cove local Gary Sylvaney was diagnosed with cancer recently, stress and uncertainty about the future began to set in.

“When I was recently diagnosed with a form of cancer somewhat common for males, information at first was slow to materialise, so stress levels were quite high,” Gary said.

When it was then advised that treatment would require four weeks of radiation, five days a week at the Mater Hospital, for around 5 minutes each day, further concerns arose.

“How would we cope transport wise?” asked Gary.

“Self-driving was out of the question due to the side effects of radiation and hormonal treatment.”

With his travel options limited, Gary’s wife came across a leaflet for a ‘Free Clinic Bus Free Transport For Medical Welfare Appointments’.

“The service picks up from homes in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, North Arm

Cove, Karuah and the Pindimar turn off for medical, optical, dental, xray, radiation, pathology etc.

“The service also visits patients in hospitals and out of town nursing homes.

“Carers are also welcome.

“A phone call to the Bookings Coordinators number listed on the Leaflet soon had my transport problems solved.

“The Clinic Bus collected me from home, took me to the Mater, and then collected me after my treatment for return to home.”

Gary used the service for a total of 20 days.

“I cannot speak highly enough of this service and the wonderful volunteers who safely provided not only on time transport but also care for the journey.”

By Marian SAMPSON HAVE you dropped some coins in the slot of a pokie machine lately?

If so, you are not alone!

This week, Liquor and Gaming NSW released its latest gaming machine data reports as part of the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to transparency on gambling activity across the state.

Some will see the figures as staggering.

Between 1 June, 2020 and 30 November, 2020 the total net profit from gaming machines in NSW Clubs is $2,171,070,059.

From this the government collects $436,741,144 in tax.

Other venues with gaming machines including hotels reported a net profit of $1,567,974,851 between 1 July 2020 and 31 December 2020.

We punted on the pokies at 66,489 machines in 1,042 clubs across the

state and a further 22,519 machines in 1,284 hotels.

Of these, 28 clubs were in the Midcoast Council LGA. They posted a net profit for the 1 June 2020 to 30 November 2020 period of $23,322,409.65 from poker machines contributing $3,086,504.63 in tax to the government.

Tea Gardens Country Club ranked at 375 in the state for profit with 49 machines.

Midcoast hotel venues saw a net profit from gaming machines of $11,359,864 contributing $3,274,857 in tax.

Across the Midcoast Council LGA in the reporting period there were 1349 poker machines in 48 venues.

While these figures are staggering there is some good news, particularly for community organisations.

community with the NSW Government telling us, “The NSW Government offers grants to communities across NSW to support the building, renovation and fit-out of infrastructure.

“Funding is available for arts and cultural infrastructure, sport and recreation infrastructure and projects that assist communities with essential infrastructure and disaster readiness.

“Infrastructure Grants are made possible through the NSW Government’s Clubgrants Category 3 Fund, which reinvests a contribution from the state’s registered clubs gaming machine profits back into community projects.”

Clubs and local communities also manage the ClubGRANTS which is one of Australia’s largest grant programs, providing more than $100 million in cash each year to a variety of worthy causes across

Pearls of Port Stephens Easter Fundraiser

By Rhonda BANISTER BOBAKO, Pearls of Port Stephens WHAT a fantastic Easter break – perfect weather provided an opportunity to attend the fun activities held throughout our townships.

A continuous flow of generous people supported the Pearls of Port Stephens Book Sale and raffle at Hawks Nest.

The sum of $3,130.00 was raised and donated to the Shake It Up Foundation which is a not-for-profit Australian organisation that

is committed to research to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease.

Due to the Founding Director’s commitments to cover all administrative costs of the foundation, 100% of the funds will go to research.

The sale gave people a reason to clear out their library of books, CDs and DVDs and then re-stock.

All donations were given by the community and the Easter hampers were donated by the ‘’Pearls girls’’.

and the Thursday night patrons of the Tea Gardens Hotel who dug deep to support the raffle and showed a genuine interest in the work of the Shake it Up Foundation.

Wales has also displayed shocking statistics of victimisation with 23.3 percent of farmers experiencing any time of farm crime more than seven times, and 76.8 percent experiencing farm crime more than twice.

“The people who live in our regional and remote communities around New South Wales have had a really tough time for the last few years.

“They’ve had to deal with

drought, flood, COVID-19 and everything else that can be thrown at them.

“They don’t need to be dealing with extra adversity around theft.”

Dr Kyle Mulrooney, University of New England Centre of Rural Criminology co-director commented, “One of the shocking statistics we found is repeat victimisation, which can vary from trespass or theft, to gates being run down.”

In regards to the results of the study Dr Mulrooney said, “We have information to target farm crime generally.

“It will help police make the case that rural crime is a serious problem and farmers are being victimised at high rates.”

It has been reported that between 2015 and 2020 over $22.5 million worth of livestock, including cattle and sheep have been stolen across regional New South Wales, with an estimated $60 million lost in animal by-products and breeding potential.

Upgrade at Sewage Treatment Plant MIDCOAST Council has begun working on preliminary plans for a major upgrade to the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant, appointing a consultant to complete a concept design for the project in March.

The concept design will establish the civil, electrical and mechanical requirements of the project and is expected to take around six months.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the project had been planned for a number of years and it was now time to move forward with it.

“In its current capacity, the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant is working hard to process the volume of sewage coming into the plant, especially during

peak holiday periods,” he said.

The project will see two clarification tanks and a new sludge lagoon constructed at the facility, while the existing aeration tanks will undergo significant modifications to ensure they can process

larger volumes of sewage.

The ultraviolet disinfection and chemical dosing systems at the plant will also be upgraded.

Residents of Port Stephens and the Midcoast are being asked by their local authorities to be vigilant and to learn how to identify cane toads.

“If you intend to dispose of cane toads it’s important you can tell the difference between cane toads and local native frogs so you don’t kill frogs by accident.

“While adult cane toads are usually very large around 9 to 15 centimetres (or 3.5 to 5 inches) long, smaller toads can easily be confused with native frogs.

“Cane toads have a number of distinguishing features, including: dry, warty skin that may be grey, yellowish, olive-brown or reddish-brown: a bony ridge from their eyes to their nose; leathery webbing between their back toes; no webbing between their front toes and large glands on each shoulder.”

Dear Tina, Now I can't make a professional judgement, but perhaps you are a bit of an introvert and the screaming shrieks, strobe lights, vertiginous rides, loudspeakers playing the theme from Deliverance and 60,000 people dashing around looking at oversized pumpkins and rally cars just isn't your vibe.

We are all different, Tina. That's what makes the world an interesting and intriguing place. Personally, my favourite places at the Royal Easter Show are the Lost Persons room, which I like to think of as a metaphor for contemporary life, and the art displays. Throw in a pig and a bloke cutting a bit of timber and I'm done.

For others, though, they thrive on the loud screams of others. They embrace the idea of battling crowds while vacuuming up some reconstituted offal and deep-fried batter dipped in a slosh of tomato sauce, and they are enthralled watching the temper tantrums of children on sugar highs whose dads can't win a fluffy unicorn.

Maybe you should start with something less taxing that mirrors the big event as a way of building up to it. Chop some wood in your backyard wearing a navy singlet and steel-capped boots (safety first). Put a blue ribbon on your dog and pop it in a cage for half an hour. Play the theme music to The Fast and The Furious and drive some Matchbox cars around a hand-chalked track.

Make some colourful cellophane glasses and shine a flashlight in your eyes ever few minutes while spinning in circles to mimic The Beast ride. Lock the bathroom door and wait 30 minutes until you can enter in preparation for the real deal where there are queues of people with bladder issues. Slow steps, Tina. Slow steps.

I dined there last night, and I would thoroughly recommend it.

10 March After early morning showers, the fifth round of the Newcastle District Pennants was played today.

Both Grades 5 and 6 played at home but the home ground advantage was negated by a determined Nelson Bay

outfit who powered away to win both grades.

Grade 5 were well in the game at about the halfway mark, but Nelson Bay finished stronger to take the points.

One Dolphins team managed a draw, but the master board favoured the visitors, 51-78.

Grade 6 was left in the blocks in their game and played “catch-up” bowls for the remainder of the day, the visitors winning 46-70.

Grade 4 played away at Beresfield and recorded their first loss of the season 56-70.

They managed one win to salvage a point for the game.

The only shining light of the round was a great 9-1 win to the mighty Sevens.

They played away at Toronto and my sources say they “were never in doubt of winning”.

The master board score was 74-52.

CONGRATULATIONS to Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club Grade 4 Blue Pennant side winning through to the Post Sectional Finals.

The Finals were due to be played at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 April (No results at time of publication).

Our ladies will be bowling in the afternoon on Tuesday and the morning on the 15.

In grade 2 of Pennants there is only 1 section so our TGWBC side was due to play again on Tuesday 13 April.

The winner of this section will be determined on this day.

Despite great bowling by our side they are out of contention to win a Flag.

Grade 4 Yellow didn't

make the Finals but have proved to be a challenge to their opponents.

The results of last week's games are as follows: Tuesday 6 April: Grade 2, TG 43 v Soldiers Point 35, 5 points to TG. Grade 4 Yellow TG, 53 v New Lambton 23 a win, a big 5 points to us. Grade 4 Blue, a Bye Thursday 8 April: Grade 2, TG 37 v Fingal Bay 35 a side win but 1 team had a loss so 4 points gained.
