By Tara CAMPBELL IT’S time for your weekly Police and Emergency Services update for the Myall Coast.

Marine Rescue At 10:00am on 7 October, Marine Rescue Port Stephens received a request for assistance from an eight metre open runabout with engine overheating issues at the mouth of the Myall River.

The Marine Rescue crew quickly prepared PS31 for a quick voyage and arrived at the location in fleeting time to tow the vessel towards Hawks Nest Boat Ramp.

Within no time, the vessel was safely back to the ramp just in time for lunch.

Emergency Service Volunteers Memorial Service On 10 October, the Emergency Service Volunteers Memorial Service was held virtually to pay respect to those in the NSW Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, VRA Rescue NSW and Marine Rescue volunteers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while working to protect others in the community.

Senior Chaplain Ray Lotty of VRA Rescue NSW addressed the service reminding virtual attendees of the legacy

that these volunteers have left.

“Today, each of us comes together; although not physically, certainly in spirit, in a shared grief, and a shared love.

“But we are also united in a shared hope, and a shared desire to honour and remember those who have paid that ultimate sacrifice- they have truly been great stewards of the life and property entrusted to them.

“They leave us with an incredible legacy that lives on in us, just as certainly as their memory and sacrifice live on in us,” Mr Lotty said.

NSW were sworn in by NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller.

Class 349 will commence duties from Monday 11 October seeing them undertake a year of on-the-job training and completion of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice by distance education with Charles Sturt University before being confirmed to the rank of constable.

“We’re excited to bring three new Probationary Constables to our community from Monday.

“They’ve worked incredibly hard to be here and we look forward to their time with us,” a representative from the district said.

They conduct research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer and have helped to save millions of lives from breast cancer worldwide through research q

In October Breast Cancer Trials is asking us to participate in the 3 Course Challenge which encourages food lovers from all over Australia to ‘stay in and entertain’ this October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) to support clinical trials research which aims to save every life from breast cancer.

This delicious fundraising initiative invites Australians to take on the challenge of

cooking a three course Indian feast to raise money for lifesaving breast cancer clinical trials research.

To support dinner party hosts, a live streamed virtual cooking class will be held by top chef, former MasterChef and TV personality Sarah Todd, who will guide them in preparing a menu of three Indian dishes that they will later cook for their guests.

The dinner party hosts will reach out to their networks of friends and family to encourage them to donate to Breast Cancer Trials research.

Sarah’s specialty cuisine is modern Indian and she owns three restaurants in India.

You can find out more at www.3coursechallenge.com. au While research is the way to defeat breast cancer in the long term, screening is important and women are being reminded not to delay their breast cancer screening.

Although these rates are excellent, Dr David Durrheim from Hunter New England Health said the region is still playing catch up and many people will be left vulnerable come ‘freedom day’.

"It's that second dose that's lagging way behind and people aren't really protected adequately until they get their second dose of the vaccine.

"We still need to be very cautious in the local community, even if things lift, we should still be very careful about mask-wearing, social distancing, and making sure we avoid congregated places," Dr Durrheim said.

No Sydney Visitors Yet

By Marian SAMPSON WHILE many have been concerned about seeing a rush of people arrive from Sydney as the state opens up this week, there has been a reprieve.

The population of Greater Sydney is not able to travel to the regions just yet.

The rule will allow people in the regions that have suffered from a lack of available vaccines a chance to become fully vaccinated.

There will be no day trips or visits with grandparents just yet.

Those living in Sydney are restricted to the Sydney basin, Wollongong, Central Coast and Blue Mountains.

At this point in time this will change when the state reaches 80% double dose vaccination rates.

However people living in regional NSW are now able to travel to Port Stephens and the Myall

Coast.

While we get ready there is still some caution from locals, some of whom are saying, “I’m not rushing out to the shops just yet…”

Others are keen to break out with some positive retail therapy and of course a cold one at their local pub.

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, said, “Following my late night phone calls to the Health Minister last night, it’s been confirmed today that Greater Sydney cannot travel to the regions from Monday.

“Not for holidays.

“Not for day trips.

“We must be given a chance to get our vaccination rates up after our struggle to access vaccines.

“For Greater Sydney, travel to the regions - for one day or a holiday - is only permitted at the 80% vaccination threshold,” she said.

World Mental Health Day is coming up – on 10 October There are some great associated awareness raising campaigns – such as https://www. who.int/campaigns/world-mental-health-day https://lookafteryourmentalhealthaustralia.org. au/ All of which got me thinking about mental health and family law.

As you can easily imagine, family law and mental health go hand-in-hand.

All relationships and families go through difficult times.

But if someone is experiencing depression, stress, substance abuse or any number of other mental health illnesses, it can bring about the end of a relationship. Domestic violence, financial problems and the effects of addiction are also frequently named as causes of relationship breakdown.

Even if mental health was not a factor in the breakdown of the relationship – dealing with the decision to end a relationship can itself cause stress, anxiety and depression.

There are a lot of organisations out there who offer services designed especially for families experiencing mental health issues. Both Interrelate Family Centres and Relationships Australia offer a range of counselling and programs – including ones designed specifically for people who are separating, as well as counselling in relation to family violence and problem gambling. Other organisations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, the Financial Counselling Helpline and Newcastle Domestic Violence Resource Centre - offer issues specific assistance. In addition, there are counselling services such as Lifeline (lifeline.org.au) and the Kids Helpline available to help.

While the law has to keep adapting to ensure that it can best respond to each person – it has come a ways when it comes to mental health.

Local politicians react to Perrottet appointment IN the wake of former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and former deputy premier John Barilaro resigning last week, a new leader has emerged.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet was elected leader of the NSW Liberal Party and therefore NSW Premier, beating Planning Minister Rob Stokes.

At 39 years of age, Mr Perrottet is the youngest Premier elected in NSW history.

A staunch Catholic and a supporter of former US President Donald Trump, Mr Perrottet has attracted criticism and concerns about whether his religious beliefs and conservative views will influence the way that he governs the state.

In the past, Mr Perrotet openly opposed same-sex marriage and the legalisation of abortion in NSW. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead welcomed the appointment of Mr Perrottet.

“The appointment of Dominic Perrottet as the Premier of NSW along with the NSW Nationals in Government electing Paul Toole as the new Deputy Premier marks a new era in the history of our State,” Mr Bromhead told Myall Coast News Of The Area.

“Dominic and Paul have considerable experience that will prove invaluable for our State.”

“There are many important projects coming up in the Myall Lakes and as we continue to navigate our way through COVID, I’m looking forward to working closely with our new leaders.”

Other politicians were not so welcoming of the new Premier.

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, reminded constituents about Mr Perrottet’s decisions as Treasurer.

“As Treasurer, Dom Perrottet reversed a pay rise for our nurses and paramedics in the middle of a pandemic,” she said in a damning Facebook post.

“This was his way of saying ‘thanks’.”

Ms Washington also pointed out Mr Perrotet’s alleged maltreatment of injured and dying workers through the infamous iCare program and the fact that he privatised “...billions worth of public assets”.

She also alleges that Mr Perrottet “left thousands of businesses without support during lockdowns”.

WHILE members of the community have struggled for years to get reception there is some good news on the horizon.

Optus has switched on a new mobile tower in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, delivering locals and travellers alike stronger Optus coverage.

The new site located on Cabbage Tree Road in Upper Myall will provide coverage in the rural location and to its surrounding suburbs of Warranulla, Bunyah and Markwell as well as the Ghin-Doo-Ee National Park.

Whilst the population in Upper Myall is small, the area is a major arterial road for the region with many travellers visiting its hinterland and national parks in peak seasons.

Having the new tower in the region is also welcome news to locals as it will help to improve connectivity for those in the vicinity.

THERE’S never been a better time to make sure you Get Ready for Bushfire, following MidCoast Council’s five step series to ensure your home has a bushfire survival plan and is prepared for bushfire danger season.

Over the last two weeks, the series has shown how to identify the bushfire risk for your property, and put together a bushfire survival plan – so that everyone in your home knows what you will do and where you will go in a bushfire emergency.

This week, it’s checklist time – there’s a list of things to do to prepare your home and your yard before a bushfire threatens.

And if you’re on a farm or large property – there’s a checklist for you too.

“A well prepared home is easier to defend against fire, and it’s safer for you and for our volunteer firefighters,” MidCoast Council’s Mayor David West explained.

“Get started by heading to the website and find the ‘Step 3’ information plus the Bushfire Survival Plan document.

“You’ll find the NSW RFS Get ready videos there – for preparing your home, your yard and your rural property.

“The Plan has a checklist for preparing your home and yard.”

If you can’t physically do the work yourself, please don’t hesitate to ask your family, friends or engage a service to help you.

And if you have limited support from these sources, then the NSW RFS’s AIDER service may be able to help you.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said it is vital that NSW residents continue to roll up their sleeves to push the state’s rates of double vaccination even higher.

“We want to get to as close to 100 per cent double vaccination as possible to keep everyone safe,” Mr Hazzard said.

“Vaccination is our greatest weapon against the virus, together with social distancing, hand sanitising, mask wearing and getting tested when we have symptoms – which all remain important as we navigate our way out of this pandemic.”

AFTER more than 100 days of restrictions NSW took its first steps back to normal life on Monday.

Businesses across the state opened their doors to customers on Monday, 11 October, with patrons required to demonstrate they have been doublevaccinated and are willing to comply with physical-distance requirements.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said Monday was the first step in seeing some restrictions lifted for those who are double-vaccinated, and for businesses around the state to re-open and get the NSW economy back to business.

“There is a sense of optimism out there with thousands of businesses across the State busy preparing to open their doors tomorrow. NSW you’ve earned this,” Mr Perrottet said on Sunday.

“As we re-open after more than 100 days we ask everyone to treat staff with kindness and respect when they ask you to check-in or see your vaccination certificate.

“Following these simple measures will help keep us all safe and keep us moving forward out of the pandemic.”

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres welcomed the reopening and reminded people to act responsibly when going out.

New Cops For Port Stephens

PORT Stephens Local Area Command has welcomed six new Police recruits.

Statewide, the NSW Police Force has welcomed 226 police recruits after they were sworn in as probationary constables at a ceremony in Goulburn.

by Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller APM and Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman.

The probationary officers will be assigned to Police Area Commands and Police Districts across the state after taking their oath of office.

Training more doctors in the bush to benefit more rural communities A PROGRAM that provides young doctors with the experience of training in a rural general practice or Aboriginal Medical Services and provides more medical care to regional, rural and remote communities is being extended by the Federal Coalition Government.

Member for Lyne and Federal Regional Health Minister Dr David Gillespie said extending the Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund (RJDTIF) for another year will mean 60 full time-equivalent

rurally based interns and postgraduate doctors can undertake training in country practices.

“This program allows early-career doctors to take the opportunity to train in the rural communities where clinical opportunities are abundant, while also enjoying the benefits of a regional or rural lifestyle,” Dr Gillespie said.

“There is strong evidence that undertaking medical training in a regional or rural setting increases retention rates.

“The program has

already benefited more than 50 towns and 80 sites across regional, rural, and remote locations, such Nhulunbuy in the NT, Goondiwindi in QLD and Bega in NSW with approximately 814 rotations since 2018.”

Dr Gillespie, who worked as a regional doctor for more than 30 years before becoming a MP, said the funding extension is being provided to the 15 organisations currently funded through the program.

The new John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program (JFPDP), announced as part of the 2021-22 Budget, will consolidate the RJDTIF to increase rural primary care rotations for hospital-based prevocational doctors from 440 rotations (100 FTE) in 2022 incrementally to 800 rotations (200 FTE) by 2025.

This will enable an additional 360 hospitalbased junior doctors to experience rural general practice.

Fears for people with disability as NSW opens up DISABILITY advocates hold grave concerns that sluggish efforts to vaccinate people with disability in NSW will mean many disabled people now face sickness and death as the state starts to open up this week from COVID lockdown.

National peak disability advocacy organisation People With Disability Australia (PWDA) is calling on decision-makers in NSW and across the country to not lose focus as restrictions ease and redouble efforts to ensure that all NDIS participants, disabled people and other at risk individuals are prioritised for vaccination.

PWDA President Samantha Connor said, “While many people think that a loosening of lockdown means the worst is over,

the opposite is true for many people with disability because for them the worst is yet to come.

“People with disability are at greater risk of sickness and death if they get infected with COVID, but vaccination rates are still way too low for our community members to be protected now that the virus is being allowed to run free.

“The Victorian Government has recognised this and is to be commended by responding last week with $5 million of dedicated funding for vaccination programs specifically targeting people with disability.

“Other governments across Australia – and the NSW government in particular – also need to

understand that putting atrisk people in further danger is unconscionable and must set vaccination targets and improve vaccination strategies for people with disability and their support workers to ensure people with disability can be safe.”

In addition, Ms Connor says there are serious issues which are NSW specific which must be addressed as a matter of urgency to ensure disabled people are not left behind and put at risk.

“These include issues around ‘special schools’, boarding houses, prisons and other state run facilities, as well as issues around ensuring people with disability have equitable access to health care and are not discriminated against or deprioritised. There are

potential legal challenges ahead for state and territory governments if decisionmaking is not equitable, fair and responsive.”

Last week, the National COVID Vaccine taskforce reported that just over a third of NDIS participants, less than two-thirds of NDIS participants in shared residential accommodation and just over half of NDIS screened support workers have received two vaccine doses.

“However, these figures don’t include the hundreds of thousands of people with disability who live in residential settings, boarding houses, hospitals or other congregate settings.

“The vaccination status of these people is unknown.

“For NDIS participants aged between 12 and 15, the vaccination rate is just 4.8%.

New England Health recorded 56 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the district, including two from Port Stephens and three from the MidCoast LGA. Port Stephens reported 59 locally acquired COVID-19 cases and tests in the four weeks up to

8pm 9 October 2021, while the MidCoast recorded 27 cases in that period.

What is very alarming is the sudden rise of cases within the Hunter’s Indigenous community this week.

According to Hunter New England Health, this

week Indigenous people made up 20% of cases in the Hunter region, a rise of 19% from last week.

They say three out of five Aboriginal people with Covid-19 in the local health district are aged under 25, with at least 60 Indigenous people in the Hunter having

“Residential aged care workers are leading Australia’s overall vaccination rates and these numbers continue to grow.

We acknowledge our aged care workers for leading the community in being vaccinated.”

Dementia Advocate Bobby Redman, who is living with dementia, said, “Home-

care workers often visit the homes of many different clients each week.

“I feel much safer knowing that, as a condition of employment, my carers are now vaccinated and keeping us safe.”

People living with dementia, their families and carers have told Dementia Australia that despite the high levels of vaccination of staff and residents, some residential aged care homes have still not been able to offer appropriate alternatives to essential visits and this has resulted in poor physical and psychological outcomes for residents with dementia.

“During this time, the aged care sector is under increasing stress.

“For those impacted by dementia, there will be an added layer of anxiety,” Ms McCabe said.

“A focus on promoting social engagement to restore mental health and wellbeing as we move beyond lockdown solutions is in everybody’s best interests.

“Dementia Australia is here to support the 472,000 Australians living with

Dementia Increases COVID Risks

OLDER Australians have always been at higher risk from COVID - and now there is now evidence that people living with Dementia are also more vulnerable.

Dementia Australia supports mandatory vaccinations across the aged care sector and urges people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment, and their loved ones, to receive a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment are more vulnerable to contracting severe COVID-19 and once infected, have a high risk of disease-related morbidity and mortality.

“We know that during this pandemic people living with dementia are some of the most vulnerable people in our community,” Ms McCabe said.

The clinic bus, which is free to the community and operated by volunteers, has reluctantly been forced by Covid to close until 10 Jan 2022.

This is a wonderful service, free to residents (although a donation helps) and we look forward to their resumption.

Our talented and lovely ladies are continuing to show their artistic prowess in adding a dingo to the amenities block adjacent to the Community Hall and adding a fish series to the power poles in the Moira Pde car park.

The Progress Association (PA), with great input from the U3A, has continued their review of the availability of defibrillators in our area.

There are a number placed in service areas and commercial operators, however there is no ready accessibility on a 24- hour basis.

We must recall that we are the oldest average age in Australia and with the increased demand on our Ambulance Service, it is imperative

that a service can be reached in 15 minutes.

The PA has established a subcommittee to investigate the issue and liaise with The NSW Community Defib Group, a non-for-profit organisation who helps to enable vulnerable communities to save lives.

It is anticipated to present the group at the PA’s AGM in December.

The Pool sub-committee has contacted community groups to obtain information as to what facilities should form part of the pool upgrade and is undertaking investigations in relation to the pool condition, before developing an upgrade project plan.

Meanwhile, authorised groups have begun using the pool which will come under YMCA supervision in early December.

The Myall River Action Group has raised concerns over the continued absence of a number of fish species that were common along the waterfront 10 years ago and now absent.

There is some speculation that overfishing in the Lakes and contaminants from land management are contributors.

However, sand inundation into the Lower Myall may prove to be the major culprit.

This appears to be related to the sand loss along Jimmies Beach, and the need to alter the dredging of the natural channel from the current 5-year cycle to 3 years and in so doing, assist Mother Nature in rebuilding Myall Point.

Council has received a study grant to evaluate the system performance, using the Sand Transfer Station to replenish sand on Jimmys Beach.

They need to identify improvement opportunities and optimise the renourishment process.

Findings of the study will also be used to inform the broader Coastal Management Program across the State.

The heralded Pedestrian, Mobility & Bike Plan (PAMP) was unsuccessful in obtaining a Government grant, however Council is committed to providing a pathway in Mirreen Street, linking Peter Sinclair Gardens to the Hawks Nest shopping area.

Discussions are shortly to be held with the Gardens and construction is expected to be completed next year.

Council has advised the concept design for the footpath one way concept on the Singing Bridge is now complete and will incorporate a concrete path, linking to a raised boardwalk under the bridge constructed from recycled plastic. Council is currently seeking material quotes in order to finalise the costing of the project.

Researching the brain health of retired athletes

AUSTRALIANS love their sport, coming from a culture where we work hard and play even harder.

However in recent years the issue of concussion and the long term effect of head knocks has been garnering greater attention.

Research comparing the brain health of retired athletes from collision and non-collision sports will be part of a comprehensive and collaborative concussion project being led by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

The AIS has welcomed $340,000 in Australian Government funding for The Concussion and Brain Health project 2021-24, which will contribute to the evidence and understanding of sport-related concussion and continue to prioritise the health of Australian sport participants.

The Concussion and Brain Health project will begin this year and be delivered by 2024, comprising two major

components.

The AIS will work with medical experts and researchers to update the Concussion in Sport Australia: Position Statement, a concussion management resource launched in 2019 and endorsed by more than 50 leading medical and sporting organisations.

Additionally, the AIS is collaborating with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), University of Newcastle and University of Canberra on a research program that will assess the brain health of retired elite level athletes.

AIS Chief Medical Officer Dr David Hughes said the project would improve the understanding of long-term brain health of retired elite athletes, in both collision and non-collision sports.

“This project will evaluate several domains of brain health in retired elite athletes including neuropsychological assessment, brain imaging, objective somatosensory assessment and potential involvement in a brain donor

program,” Dr Hughes said.

“Associate Professor Andrew Gardner of HMRI and the University of Newcastle has been leading one of the largest and most comprehensive brain health research programs for retired athletes in the world, involving in-person evaluations of more than 150 retired elite level collision sport players.

The AIS, HMRI, The University of Newcastle and University of Canberra are combining to take this further, recruiting a control group of retired non-collision elite athletes.

“We are aiming to collect data on the brain health of more than 40 retired athletes from non-collision sports every year.

“This study is available to former elite level men and women athletes who were not involved in contact or collision sport.”

It will be updated by the start of 2023 and will address the latest evidence on concussion in female athletes, concussion in para-athletes, potential implications for long-term brain health and the utility of specific physiotherapyguided rehabilitation in the management of concussion.

“This has proved to be

a wonderful resource for sport, but we need to ensure it is continually updated to reflect the latest evidence and research, with enhanced educational tools that are easily accessible to all in Australian sport,” Dr Hughes said.

“We want all Australians to be able to safely enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits sport can provide.”

Ultimately the outcome of this research could change grassroots sport in the community in the long term and create better long term outcomes for all athletes.

GIVE YOUR HOME THAT STREET APPEAL “Standing in the street looking at our home, we can’t help thinking it looks a little ‘hard’. It’s neat and tidy but doesn’t seem to have ‘soul’. Any tips?”

YOU don’t have to be selling to want your property to have street appeal. And street appeal doesn’t just mean neat and tidy. It’s about creating an inviting bond between your front garden and home; one that appeals to the eye. You say your property looks a ‘little hard’ so I’m thinking that means limited garden, possibly an angular shape and maybe a dark exterior colour scheme?

Whether applicable to one or more of those characteristics, I’d suggest an exterior colour scheme sympathetic to its surroundings; a scheme that combines a feature colour with one or two complimentary trim colours. Then develop a garden scheme to compliment.

Soft, rounded foliage in shrubs and trees, pops of colour that tie in with your exterior house paint and curved brick, or stone paths will soften your exterior and create a lovely welcoming impression. I suggest looking at paint colours, paint some samples on your exterior and leave them for a while to catch the changing light, then when you’ve decided, take those samples and a photo of your home to your nursery and chat with the plant experts about what best suits.

Sulphur-smelling slime on Myall Quays Waterway DEAR News Of The Area, IN recent days a number of Waterfront Lot owners complained about the appearance of a sulphur-smelling slime on the border of the waterway.

This has actually happened a few times in the past 24 years since the waterway was established.

The reason is very simple.

We have insufficient salinity content in the waterway due to: 1. A period of low tides meaning insufficient ocean water inflow.

2. An extended period of sunshine encouraging weed growth at the bottom of the waterway.

After a while they die and come to the surface, ferment and give off the sulphur smelling odour.

3. An extended period of no decent rain to flush the waterway.

The waterway was designed to be regularly flushed.

As the past long term Chairperson of the Executive Committee I recommended a few times to enlarge the outlet to the river to obtain more ocean water but the Committee and our Council did not proceed with this logical solution.

At this stage we can only hope for a few days of heavy rain to flush the Waterway.

And, on top of it all, you got paid.

Paid to stay home.

What fresh new nirvana is that for someone who has lived a life of avoidance.

It's tough, Barry.

As a writer, I have intentionally chosen the life of a recluse and now you've all discovered the hidden joys of working from home - only needing to be dressed professionally from the waist up, exercise breaks, no interruptions, no workplace illnesses from some snottynosed accountant who thinks he's so important that he has to soldier on and infect the entire workplace.

What's not to love?

This logic doesn't work, however, for those in hands-on jobs.

You can't build a house from your office, or take blood, or pick and pack orders, or deliver furniture and food.

So, unfortunately, Barry, this utopia you speak of is unsustainable for many, but if you can continue to get away with it, good luck to you.

This police procedural is not like the other fish in the police procedural sea. Nicola Walker (pictured, Unforgotten) teems with charisma as the titular character: a book loving, straight-talking woman who is a single mother to a bad-tempered teenager. She has moved to Scotland to head up the Marine Homicide Unit, which is busy trying to solve maritime crimes in a by-the-numbers way – until Annika arrives. It’s a police procedural with a different atmosphere that boasts some awesome Scottish scenery.

For a split second, you could be forgiven for wondering what sort of dark doco you have stumbled across if accidentally tuning into New Gold Mountain. This fresh series is a bold move by SBS: it’s the first locally produced period drama for the network. Filmed in Victoria, the Gold Rush-era drama is a murder mystery laced with humour. Starring Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Yoson An (pictured, Mulan) and Dan Spielman (The Code), it’s unique in giving a Chinese perspective of life in 1800s Victorian goldfields. In tonight’s penultimate episode, Shing (An) desperately tries to find the truth.
