Replanting MidCoast gardens after 2019-20 bushfires A NUMBER of gardens damaged in the 2019-20 summer bushfires across the MidCoast will be replanted and fireproofed with the help of Federal funding.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has announced $150,000 in Federal funding under the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program to support property owners to replant their gardens and prepare for any future event.

“We know how crippling it is to lose valuable farmland, stock or personal assets.

“It’s just as devastating to see a beautiful garden

destroyed, particularly when the garden is someone’s livelihood,” Dr Gillespie said.

“We’re anticipating a strong and positive community response to this project and will look forward to seeing some of the beautiful and clever garden restorations that occur.”

MidCoast Growers’ Network spokesperson Melanie Kiker said many landowners were keen to learn how to

fireproof their properties.

“A number of local garden owners are anxious about rebuilding and then facing a future bushfire which wipes them out again.

“Re-designing is also a chance to make your home, garden and outbuildings more resilient to bushfires,” Ms Kiker said.

“We’ll aim to initially restore sixteen local gardens, linking in as many people as we can with this project.

“We’ll have a strong focus on

information dissemination - public outreach, video-documented garden redesigns, workshops, our website and social media - so that we can leave a long-term legacy for all bushfire-prone communities in the MidCoast LGA and beyond.”

IN the wake of recent severe storms and the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, the Federal Government will bring forward the 2022-23 Financial Assistance Grants payment for local councils, to be paid before the end of this month.

MidCoast Council is set to receive $14,927,320, while Port Stephens Council will receive $5,507,409.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the payments would allow local councils to target infrastructure priorities.

“There’s been a cumulative impact on our local council budgets from the recent weather events and from COVID-19,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The Financial Assistance Grant payment is untied in the hands of local

government, allowing councils to spend the money according to local priorities.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work of council officials – with support from our Government – in dealing with natural disasters and their aftermath at a local community level.”

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister and Assistant Minister for Local Government Kevin Hogan said pre-paying the Financial Assistance Grant means the Government is backing local councils when they need it most.

“The Government is committed to continuing its support to local governments, given their important role in delivering vital services and ensuring quality of life for Australian communities,” Mr Hogan said.

“These grants are untied in the hands of local government, allowing councils to spend the grants according to local priorities – a real shot in the arm for

councils and local decision-making in these challenging times.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work of local officials – with support from our Government – in dealing with natural disasters and their aftermath at a community level.

“I have been in regular contact with mayors, councillors and other local government ministers to understand the realities on the ground, and to make sure we are all playing our part.

“A stable and effective local government sector is good for the nation and we will continue to do what is good for the nation through these crises.”

The Commonwealth has committed $2.8 billion in funding to local government in 2022–23, 75 percent being brought forward to be paid early to local governments for rebuilding after floods and the transition and planning of living with COVID-19.

The Pearls of Port Stephens are a local fundraising group who work hard to raise funds and awareness for important foundations which support a range of medical conditions.

Last year, the group hosted a Book Sale which raised over $3000 for research into Parkinson’s Disease.

Kidney diseases impact approximately 1.7 million Australians each year.

There are many different forms of kidney disease in Australia, with the most common being diabetes which accounts for 38 percent of all new cases.

Unfortunately, kidney disease is not reversible, but can be treatable if caught early.

When parents are sorting out the post-separation parenting arrangements for their children they are often focused on the regular time; what days the kids will be with them week-to-week. But what can sometimes be even more emotional is trying to sort out the arrangements for special occasions like Easter.

Some special occasions somewhat take care of themselves; for example, with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day usually both parents recognise that if they want time with the kids on one day the other parent will want the other.

But when it comes to the Easter period it can be a little harder to figure out what to do.

For some families the religious aspect of the period

will matter a great deal – and then it is a matter of dividing the period so as to allow both parents to celebrate the time with the children.

For some families the public holidays – time off work for the parents – is what is important as it allows for time off together with the kids.

Again, it is a matter of dividing the days so as to best make use of the time.

And of course, for some it is just about chocolate.

In any case it is a matter of considering what is important for the kids, you and the other parent. Most often that means the four days are either divided evenly or the entire period is swapped year-about. But what is crucial is thinking it through and putting in place a plan so that the “special occasion time” is enjoyed.

Joel Putland to run for UAP in Lyne

By Tara CAMPBELL JOELl Putland, a Forster businessman, will be running for the seat of Lyne supported by the United Australia Party.

After growing up on the Mid North Coast, Mr Putland now lives in Forster with his wife and four children and is concerned about the community’s loss of freedom.

“I am not a politician, but I am being called upon to step up and serve the community and I am deeply concerned about the loss of our freedoms.

“All the major parties have supported lockdowns and mandates which have torn families and lives apart and destroyed local businesses.

“The current government has grossly mismanaged the pandemic and needs to be held accountable for their actions over the

Mr Attenborough is a passionate advocate for protection of the environment, social justice and ethical and sustainable fishing.

After serving as a NSW Police Officer for over fifteen years in remote Indigenous towns, Karl was commended for reducing serious crime and the improvement of relationships between police and the community.

Bulahdelah CWA Black Dog Fundraiser

q The Bulahdelah branch of CWA recently celebrated their Ninetieth Birthday with a High Tea. Bulahdelah Central School performed some beautiful music and guests enjoyed a slideshow of photos from the past 90 years.

By Marian SAMPSON THE Bulahdelah branch of the Country Women’s Association of NSW (CWA) is conducting a fundraiser in support of the Black Dog Institute on May 22 from 10am.

The Black Dog Institute is the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, with their aim to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.

Black Dog does this through ‘translational’ research; integrating research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change.

One in five of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year.

In Australia that’s around five million people; with around 60 percent of these

people failing to seek help.

Glenda Bell, President, CWA Bulahdelah said, “We are inviting everyone to come

‘Remembering Loved Ones’ Service on 1 May COPING with loss and grief has looked very different for many people in the past several years, with Covid-19 restrictions at times affecting our ability to congregate, even in small numbers.

Funerals and church services were two of the many community activities that were impacted by the restrictions, with many unable to farewell their loved ones as they normally would.

Carolyn Bye, Deacon, Tea Gardens Baptist Church, says she heard her friend remark recently, “It was really hard having my husband die during the first Covid lockdown, especially as we could only have ten people at the funeral service.”

Carolyn’s friend continued, “Then later, with further lockdowns I couldn’t go anywhere and no-one could come and comfort me.”

Carolyn said hearing those words was a reminder that, even in the best of times, our culture does not deal well with death and grieving.

“And with the added isolation of Covid, those who are bereaved can struggle to come to terms with their heartache and loss,” said

Carolyn.

With that in mind, a ‘Remembering Loved Ones’ Service will be held at Tea Gardens Baptist church on Sunday, 1 May at 2 pm.

“Everyone is welcome but especially those who are grieving the death of loved ones in recent years,” said Carolyn. “We invite you to bring a memento of your loved ones to display in the foyer.

“During the service there will be an opportunity to remember your own loss of family members and friends, as we join together.

“At the conclusion of the Service we will have afternoon tea.”

They make a difference in many lives with programs that support many different aspects of life on the land, including working in the mental health space where they

advocate for a single co-ordinated mental health service information and referral resource in towns to provide immediate clarity, connection and assistance as part of the overall measures for suicide prevention in communities.

They also lobby the NSW Government to provide sufficient face to face acute psychiatric services to all local health areas, especially those in rural and remote locations; and lobby the State and Federal government to provide additional funding, opportunities and worthwhile incentives to enable more training of psychiatrists to provide acute face to face services in all local health areas, especially in rural and remote areas.

Action for the Myall

GORDON Grainger is a member of the Myall River Action Group and a keen boater and fisherman.

He has lived in Tea Gardens since 1998 but has visited Hawks Nest since the

1970s. His parents built a holiday home in Hawks Nest when he was young.

Gordon and some fisherman mates noticed changes in the Myall River near Tea Gardens in 2004, and by 2008 these changes were significant.

Oyster farms were closing south of Tea Gardens and Gordon’s dogs were drinking water straight from the river.

Water quality testing showed that salinity levels

had dropped to seven parts per million.

Gordon and nine other retirees who were fishermen started the Myall River Action Group in 2008.

They developed a petition which in ten days was signed by 3,500 local residents and visitors.

The Myall River Action Group lobbied the then Great Lakes Council to open up the river through dredging.

The Group subsequently

dealt with thirteen government agencies and in 2015 the lower river was dredged.

This dredging opened up river flows, salt water levels increased in the river and fish species and dolphins returned to the river from Port Stephens.

Gordon is a keen student of this area’s history.

In the 1800’s, there was a major timber industry based in Port Stephens and the Myall River was used to bring logs downstream for export, mainly to Sydney.

depths in those days and sailing schooners could navigate up it to load but with the advent of steamships, droghers were used to barge the timber across to Pindimar Bay where the steamers were anchored,” said Gordon.

“In those days, the river was dredged every three years,” he advised.

“The river’s original entrance into Port Stephens was to the east and the Myall River Action Group’s focus is to keep the river open, to maintain saltwater inflows and to reduce flooding risks.”

AUSTRALIAN Olympian turned medical doctor Jana Pittman is taking the fight to infectious disease as the face of a new campaign that urges Australians not to forget influenza or forego protection in the lead up to winter.

Following a nasty experience with influenza infection two years ago, the mother of six is helping the Immunisation Foundation of Australia spread the message about the importance of protection through annual vaccination.

“Several years ago, we lost my grandmother to influenza and in 2020, during my final year at medical school, I caught influenza and unfortunately passed the infection to my mum,” Dr Pittman said.

“That was the first time in eight years that I hadn’t had the flu shot.

“With everything going on, it just slipped my mind,” she said.

Despite years of medical training, Dr Pittman said she underestimated just how sick she would feel with the flu.

“I’ve had the common cold plenty of times, but having influenza was very different.

“It was incredibly scary, and I was close to being admitted to hospital for a high heart rate and low oxygen levels,” she said.

“Mum was very sick and to this day has an underlying cough due to the damage it did to her lungs.”

Dr Pittman said that with so much focus on COVID-19

and the booster roll-out, “We can’t forget influenza, which is likely to once again spread as borders reopen and social distancing measures are relaxed.

“I’m booked in for my flu jab, along with my kids and husband.

“As busy as we all are, this is not the year to forget about influenza.”

In 2021 only one-infour Australians under the age of 65 received their flu shot, despite the national immunisation experts (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) recommending influenza vaccination every year for everyone aged over six months.

Dr Pittman said she

was keen to support the Immunisation Foundation of Australia after hearing stories of young children who had been hospitalised, and even died, as a result of influenza.

As she welcomes her newborn twins, Dr Pittman is focused on expanding awareness about influenza prevention, particularly for pregnant women and young children.

“Parents may not be aware, but influenza hospitalises more young children than any other vaccine-preventable disease,” she said.

The Federal Government provides the influenza vaccine at no cost to children aged between six months and five years, as well as to pregnant women.

However, in 2021 just 26 percent of kids in this age group received influenza immunisation.

“Unfortunately, young children are super spreaders.

“We cuddle and care for them so closely and personal space is not their thing,” Dr Pittman said.

“Vaccination holds the key to protecting children and stopping them from passing influenza to others.

“The vaccine is free for under-fives, and all parents need to do is book in with their GP.” Dr Pittman said she hoped the Immunisation Foundation of Australia campaign would help more Australians recognise the benefits of strengthening defences

“This is unheard of,” said Kalum.

“Delivery waiting times have dramatically increased

and Port Stephens Toyota’s order book has increased by four times.

“People who bought cars three years ago are getting more for selling them now than they paid for the vehicle originally,” he said.

Kalum also noted the continual technological improvements being released with new vehicles.

“Technology is increasing in new cars with mobile phone connections permanently to Telstra to

inform emergency services about the locations of stolen cars and if accidents occur,” said Kalum.

The first hybrid Toyota vehicle was launched over 20 years ago.

“Hybrid technology has reduced fuel consumption by 40 percent and increased performance,” said Kalum.

“Battery technology is long lasting and very reliable.

“Electric cars are very safe in rain storms as all the batteries are sealed units

Our Great Southern Reef

AUSTRALIA has two very special marine reef environments - we are all familiar with the Great Barrier Reef but there is a second large reef system which is equally important to our coastal environment - the Great Southern Reef.

Rising sea temperatures which are impacting the Great Barrier Reef are also impacting the Great Southern Reef.

Marine biologist Ryan Pereira, of Irukandji Shark Encounters and the charity Seashelter, spoke to News Of The Area about this lesser known reef system.

Ryan told News Of The Area, “When we hear the word ‘reef’ we tend to think tropical coral reefs, however those found in temperate regions with intermediate climate conditions are one of the least explored, most beautiful, and productive reefs on the planet.

“Australia is spoiled by not only having the Great Barrier Reef, it is also home to the Great Southern Reef, which is a massive series of reefs that extend around Australia’s southern coastline, covering around 71,000 square kilometres from New South

Wales around the southern coastline of Australia to Kalbarri in Western Australia.”

The reef has extensive kelp seaweed forests which while not as colourful as tropical corals, are beautiful in their own right.

“These kelp forests are some of the most productive ecosystems on the planet.

“The major fisheries in the reef are the rock lobster (worth around $375 million/ year) and abalone (worth around $134 million/year).”

Tourism is also an important element of the reef - it’s estimated that the reef directly supports activities worth nearly $10 billion per year, while the total tourism from the reef and adjacent coastal areas amounts to around $40 billion/year.

“Sadly, the reefs are undergoing a transformation that is poorly understood and the extent of this change could have considerable unpleasant effects to Australia’s unique ecosystems,” Ryan said.

“A recent study found widespread loss of kelp forests following a marine heatwave in 2011 and another in 2021.

“Surveys of reefs along the NSW coastline have found that the area covered

by kelp forests declined significantly up to 50 percent in some regions.

“It was observed that after 2011 the kelp did not fully recover, nearly ten years after the heatwave.

Fishermen, divers and researchers have documented a shift from kelp to turf-forming seaweeds and subtropical and tropical fish species that thrive in warmer waters.

“Shifts in the abundance

and diversity of species of sea urchins and gastropods were also noted all along NSW, Victoria and even Tasmania,” Ryan said.

Furthermore there are studies which have shown that, “The Indian Ocean along the coast of Western Australia is a global warming hotspot—it’s high up on the list of places around the world experiencing high rates of ocean warming,” Ryan said.

“This region has seen a temperature increase of 0.65° C over the past 50 years.

“Warmer temperatures are shifting southwards at a rate of 20 to 50 kilometres per decade.

“If this trend continues, we could soon see a complete transformation of this region of the Great Southern Reef—away from temperate kelp forests to more tropical species.

PREMIER Dominic Perrottet announced the opening of the submission period for the 2022 NSW Flood Inquiry on a visit to the Northern Rivers last Monday.

Professor Mary O’Kane AC and Michael Fuller APM will lead the six-month independent Inquiry, which will review the preparation for, causes of, response to and recovery from the 2022 catastrophic flood event

across the state of NSW. Mr Perrottet said the Inquiry would play a critical role in providing a forum for community voices to be heard and ensuring all the necessary steps are taken to prepare NSW for future disaster events.

“This is your opportunity to tell your story, whether by making a submission online or attending a local session in person.

“Every submission will make a meaningful contribution to this important work to understand how we can better prepare for flooding, recover from this disaster and plan for the future,” Mr Perrottet said.

“I have every confidence in Professor O’Kane and Mr Fuller to conduct a comprehensive and vigorous independent review which

will cover both the response and more detailed futureproofing considerations, which will take place in parallel to the vast flood recovery effort that is already well underway.

“Unfortunately severe conditions continue to impact communities, it’s devastating to see places such as Lismore inundated for a second time, and it goes without saying that we will

continue to stand by them for the duration of the long recovery ahead.”

This new research highlights how needs are still not being met in many places.

It explores the options for improving the situation by having the right discussions and action, including integration and innovation in the community transport sector.

Investment in community transport reduces transport disadvantage, defined as ‘the inability to travel when and where one needs to without difficulty’.

This seemingly simple objective is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve, especially for older people, those with a disability and people in rural and regional areas.

Get Boat Ready ahead of Easter break TRANSPORT for NSW is appealing for boaters to take all necessary precautions before heading out on the water over the Easter break.

Deputy Secretary for Safety, Environment and Regulation, Tara McCarthy, said boating safety was a high priority after recent extreme weather.

“After all the bad weather

boaters aged 70 and above are over-represented in recreational boating fatalities, accounting for 27 percent, over the ten-year period to June 2021, despite holding only 8.6 percent of boat licences.

10 April The sun came out today for 25 Sunday bowlers who had a wonderful time competing over twelve ends.

Sunday bowls is becoming extremely popular with five fresh players taking on the game.

They are enjoying some coaching and already the improvement in their game is quite noticeable.

There is plenty of room for more players and free coaching is available each Tuesday from 2.00 pm.

There are plenty of coaching bowls available and all that is needed to make a start is a pair of flat-soled shoes.

The winners today were, John Atherton, Ray Prigg, Tracey Irwin, and Vic Garlic.

In other news, the semi-final of the Club Championship Pairs was

played this afternoon on a very soggy grass green.

It detracted somewhat from the spectacle of the game as, bowlers know, the bias on the bowl is negated and drawing a shot around the head is almost impossible.

There were plenty of short bowls and the only way into the congested pack was

for the Encouragement Award.

Diane Perry was announced winner of the 2021/2022 Myall Masters Encouragement Award.

Diane has worked solidly

all season trying out new drills and strokes with enthusiasm.

She laps up advice or correction with a thoughtful nod and cheerfully attempts the instruction.

Diane is an inspiration to others in the club.

The major award of Club Member of the Year was met with joyful accolades when the recipient Kerry Patterson was announced.

6 APRIL With rain threatening, the Wednesday Triples competition was played as one 18-end game with 45 players participating.

Consequently, there was a prize for both the grass and synthetic that turned out to be the 'highest winning margin'.

The winners on the grass were Keith Smith, Graham Reynolds, and Mark Nightingale with a margin of 22 points.

The winners on the synthetic with a margin of 16 were Mike Dellaca, Neil Kibble, Paul Carter, and Leigh Hunt.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Merv Mills.

Members filled Tillermans Restaurant to capacity to enjoy a sumptuous two course meal, friendly company of members and partners, and the announcement of award winners.

Club President Leon Bobako welcomed Life Member Rhonda Bobako and Past Presidents Christine Sefton, Peter Kellaway and Chris Lock.

Leon delivered a brief overview of the season’s successes and challenges.

President Leon stated that members appreciated the positive new pool management of ‘The Y’, which provided respite for members not having to install lane ropes and the pool blanket.

The installation of hot water showers was a welcomed addition at the end of training sessions.

Kerry displays tireless energy and dedication to the club.

Kerry epitomises the ‘’fun, fitness and friendship’’ motto of Masters Swimming.

When not organising social functions Kerry is in the pool improving her swimming technique, working on improving breathing, kicking and endurance.

Members are now planning on how they will keep swimming over the Winter months at Raymond Terrace and Maitland pools.

Myall Masters wishes to acknowledge and congratulate fellow Masters swimmer Chris Lock on his outstanding results in the Short Course Swimming Meet recently hosted by Warringah Masters on 3 April 2022 at Warringah Aquatic Centre.

This event attracted 198 swimmers from 20 clubs around the Sydney Metropolitan and NSW regional areas.

Myall Masters' sole entrant, Chris competed in four individual backstroke events in the 80-84 age category. Chris took top podium honours in all 4

and Ross Barry went down to the last bowl on the last end when Ross managed a difficult conversion to win the match 19-18.

A date for the final is yet to be determined but my inside news tells me it is likely to be on the Saturday of the Anzac Day weekend. events and won the 100m backstroke in a new state record. A record that has previously stood for 19 years.

Following these amazing swims Chris is now ranked Number One Nationally in 25m, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events for his age category.

On the day, apart from competing, Chris also managed to find time to officiate as one of the Official Starters of the Meet.

A truly inspirational effort.

With such excellent form, Chris is in great stead for the upcoming 2022 Masters Swimming Australian National Championships which will be held 20–24 April at Sydney Olympic Park.

From the small number of Myall Masters individual entrants at this year’s Nationals, Myall Masters will be fielding at least two relay teams and the club always punch above their weight against clubs of less than 50 members.

We wish Chris and fellow Myall Masters participants all the best at the Nationals this month.

Let’s hope all your hard work and efforts in training produce some personal bests for you all!

They are now also knitting twiddle muffs that have a calming effect for Alzheimer patients.

It is that time of the year again to start collecting beanies, gloves, socks, blankets (single bed size, new condition) for those living in cars.

Unfortunately the number is still rising due to Covid and high rents and lack of affordable housing.

It is easy to become homeless.

People living payday to payday can get behind in rent for whatever reason and are asked to leave.

There is nowhere affordable to rent, with up to 80 people applying for one rental.

Sometimes the only option is to live in your car, which is very cold in winter.

I'M not sure of your vintage, but when we were young and selecting a first car, we had very little to choose from.

Getting a loan wasn't an option, so often the first car was a hand-me-down or something with some pretty significant mechanical or body issues. Today, it seems that many P-platers expect to be driving around in a sporty current model hatchback or a dual cab with towing capacity and I feel encouraging these visions of grandeur is not preparing them for some valuable life lessons.

It is amazing how much resilience you build when you start out in a car that has to have the bonnet lifted and the starter motor tapped to get it going. Or purchasing a vehicle from a dodgy second-hand dealer intent on focusing on the low kilometres, while brushing past the fact the car was once submerged in a lake.

Never is there a better time to test your courage under pressure than going down a hill only to realise the brakes have failed. Boiled brakes are a life-long lesson.

Windows that don't wind down (remember non-automatic windows?), a interior roof lining that has to be held up with thumb tacks, an annoying leak meaning everyone in the back seat has to hold their legs up in the air.

These are the experiences that will make (and sometimes break) a person.

What right do we have to prevent the personal and emotional growth that goes with them by offering our kids an interest free loan?

A good dose of reality is a healthy thing. Hang back and let him learn from his mistakes and his overinflated car ownership dreams, as painful as that may be.

Men’s Bowling Club were desperate to finalise their Club Championship Fours competition.

In an effort to get the most out of a dry Saturday, teams played the last two rounds, including the Final, both on Saturday last.

Games Secretary Stephan Gilchrist said, “One game in the morning and then the final in the afternoon was a bit desperate, but it did get the Championship played and won on the only dry day available.”

While the morning competition was fierce it resulted in a cracker of a game in the afternoon with Team Austin, last year’s winners, up against Team Rees, battling injuries.

While Team Austin got away to a strong advantage early, Team Rees played some strong bowls to make the latter stages very close.

President Jim Healey said, “Sam Rees and Paul Freeman were both playing with some nagging injuries but Team Austin, particularly Greg Mungoven their lead bowler, kept them in the game with consistently accurate bowls in the head and they went on to win.”

Desperate measures aside, accurate bowls will always pay dividends and if you

would like to try putting “bowls on the jack”, social bowls are on offer every Tuesday and Thursday at the Club.
