Playing a round raises much needed funds

A FUN day on the green has again raised some much needed funds for the local Rural Fire Service.

Tea Gardens and Pindimar RFS units, in conjunction with Hawks Nest Golf Club, hosted the RFS Sheargold Charity Golf Day, the second year that this particular event has been organised.

When bushfires raged all over New South Wales in January 2020, Hawks Nest Golf Club General Manager Greg Acret was inspired to help raise money for the RFS after seeing comedian Celeste Barber organise the “Firefight” concert.

“We put it (the 2020 charity golf day) all together in 10 days and approached various businesses for sponsorship,” he explained.

The first event raised

$38,000, which helped the RFS unit purchase essential protective equipment for their volunteer firefighters.

Mr Acret told News Of The Area, “After the success of last year, the club decided to make it an annual event.

“Club members and the community really got behind it this year which resulted in a field of 130 players on the day.

“This contributed $6,500 to the total amount raised with 100 percent of the entry fee going to the RFS,” Mr Acret said.

Captain David Bright, of the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade, thanked the Hawks Nest Golf Club and the wider community for their ongoing support.

“The support from the Hawks Nest Golf Club was outstanding, the whole team put in a huge effort to ensure a successful day.

“Some of the funds will be used to upgrade our communication equipment,

and to replace the lockers in Tea Gardens RFS Station,” Mr Bright said.

John Rumble from First National Real Estate performed the Auctioneer duties on the day.

Thankfully, this year there have been no fires, but players and sponsors were still generous.

The initiative this year has raised well over $27,000 - and still counting.

Often when a couple purchase their principal place of residence, they do so as joint tenants. This means they jointly own the whole of the property and when the first of the couple dies, the property passes to the survivor. There is no need for an application for Probate when the first person dies, unless there are other assets held by the deceased which warrant such an application.

However, if it happens that one of the spouses goes into care and a RAD is payable then often it is beneficial to sever the joint tenancy. This means that the principal place of residence continues to be held jointly by the couple. However on the death of the first of the couple, the half interest in the property owned by that person passes under the terms of his or her Will (and no automatically to the surviving joint tenant). By severing the joint tenancy, it removes the risk that if the first of the couple to die is the spouse living in the principal

place of residence (ie not the spouse living in care), that the property does not pass to the survivor in care. The spouse not in care can leave the share of the property to whomever he or she wishes. By leaving the interest in the property to someone else (say the children) the asset base of the surviving spouse in care shall not change and therefore the obligations for payments to the care provider shall not change.

There are important considerations when a person goes into care. One consideration is the possible benefit of severing a joint tenancy. If the joint tenancy is severed, then the Will of the spouse not in care should be changed to provide that his or her share of the property shall not pass to the spouse in care.

AT the Ordinary Meeting of MidCoast Council on April 28, Councillors voted to permit medium density residential development on land adjoining the Hawks Nest Golf Course.

The site that is the subject of the planning proposal is located on Sanderling Avenue at Hawks Nest, to the immediate east of the car park and clubhouse of the Golf Club.

The Planning Proposal sought to change the land’s zoning from RE1 Public Recreation to R3 Medium Density Residential, and increase the maximum permissible Height of Building on the subject land from 8.5m to 12m, amongst other changes.

Councillors discussed the recommendations for several minutes before voting to permit the rezoning.

Cr D West, Cr K Smith, Cr K Hutchinson, Cr B Christensen, Cr T Fowler, Cr C Pontin voted to support the recommendations, while Cr P Epov and Cr K Bell voted against.

Cr Len Roberts was briefly absent from the meeting and did not vote.

The decision to change the land’s zoning has prompted a level of outrage from some members of the local community.

Local Ian Morphett told News Of The Area, “There were some 75 submissions made by the community in relation to the development and only nine of these were in favour of the development.

“Council swept the objections aside as they felt that the objections could be managed.”

The project will now proceed to concept plans which the State Government needs to approve.

Mr Morphett holds concerns that the change of permissible Height of Building will set a precedent for future developments of this scale.

“The primary concern is that the proposed development is inappropriate for the site.

“It will establish a precedent for four story buildings, which the developer claims you won't be able to see from the beach.”

Mr Morphett believes that the claim within the proposal that the rezoning will satisfy demand for permanent accommodation in Hawks Nest ignores the number of absentee residences in the area.

“The proposed development also sits around 800m from current shops and amenities if using pathways and roads which means that most people will drive to amenities, and while there are more shops planned for near the Surf Club it may be many years before these are in operation.”

Ian Morphett is among many residents that want to see the ‘right’ development in Hawks Nest, development which they say should be of a suitable height and bulk for the site.

They also want to see development that will not result in further absentee residents.

MidCoast Council told News Of The Area, “The next step is for Council to ‘make the plan’.

“This will involve changing the planning controls that apply to the site including the land zone and the height of buildings.

“The rezoning of the land has been ‘signed off’ by Council.

“As a result, there will not be any further opportunity for the community to comment

Remote Access Scheme

THE New South Wales Police Force, supported by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) are informing local community members about a re-emerging Remote Access Scam that has recently been detected by the Police Force.

This scam includes scammers pretending to be from financial institutions or well-known companies that get in contact with persons and ask to access recipient’s devices remotely, using excuses that the device isn’t functioning properly, has a virus or is sending out error messages that ‘need be fixed’.

buying software or services to ‘fix’ the device, and often will ask for personal details including bank and credit card details.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission discussed protection against Remote Access Scams, “Never give an unsolicited caller remote access to your computer.

“Never give your personal credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source.

“If you receive a phone call out of the blue about your computer and remote access is requested, hang up, even if they mention a well-known company such as Telstra.

“These companies do not request credit

on the rezoning of the land.

‘However, when a development application is lodged, the community will be able to comment on the development or building being proposed.”

They went on to say, “To clarify, this rezoning represents changing some of the planning controls over the land, including land zone and height.

“At this time no development has been proposed on the site.”

The rezoning of the land has seen the maximum building height allowed on the land has increased from 8.5m to 12m. “The 12m building height limit is not new to Hawks Nest with many parts, particularly around the town centre, already zoned 12m building height limits.

“At the time of writing, approximately 20ha of land in Hawks Nest has an existing 12m height limit.

“Other than the proposed development on the corner of Yamba and Booner Street, that is the subject of proceedings at the Land and Environment Court, Council is not aware of any new proposals for four storey buildings in Hawks Nest.”

30 Years Of Supporting Sick Kids and Their Families

By Marian SAMPSON IT’s been three decades of continuous support for families facing some of the hardest times ever.

This month, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW celebrates 30 years of providing a home away from home for families with a seriously ill or injured child.

Since the doors of Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle first swung open in April 1991, families have found a place to call home during some of their darkest days.

The charity has since opened an additional house in Tamworth, three Family Rooms, and a Family Retreat in Foster.

CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW, Ross Bingham said Newcastle House provides support and comfort to more than 600 families each year.

That’s 600 families that get to stay together, that aren’t paying for accommodation, and can truly be present for their child throughout arduous stays in hospital.

This support allows families to focus on their seriously ill child.

“Over 30 years, tens of thousands of feet have walked the corridors of the House, back and forth from the hospital to the sanctuary of the House and the comfort of their room – day and night,” said Ross.

“Doors and arms have been opened, welcoming smiles and words providing calm in the chaos.”

Ben, his wife Mel and their three daughters have been supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities for several years by pledging their birthdays.

“Ben and I decided back in 2013 that when the girls have a birthday party, we would ask guests not to

bring a gift but to donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

“We usually raise between $300 and $500 at each party and the feedback from family and friends has been really positive,” said Mel. “We’re just a normal, busy family but Remmy, Cleo and Maya understand that this is one easy way we can give back and help families, so they don’t have to be separated when their child is sick,” said Mel. One Forster-based family experienced firsthand the impact Ronald McDonald House Charities has on families like theirs when their niece, Zali, needed to be admitted to Gosford Hospital shortly after she was born.

The family room at Gosford Hospital allowed them to be there to support Ben’s sister Erin, brotherin-law Nick, and their eldest daughter Evie.

“The Family Room provided a comforting environment that allowed us to be close to Erin, Nick and Evie during Zali’s hospital stay.

“The family had everything they needed there to allow them to be close to their daughter during such a stressful time,” said Ben. RMHC Northern NSW has just one 30th birthday wish and that is to continue

ANOTHER nesting season has officially ended for local endangered shorebirds and MidCoast Council’s environmental team is pleased to see the ‘Share the Shore’ message being implemented.

The MidCoast is fortunate to have migratory shorebirds make their way to local beaches annually to nest and feed but it’s always a delicate process and one that requires understanding and collaboration from the community for a positive season.

After assessing the success of the season, while there are always some minor issues, generally Council believes the Share the Shore message is working.

“This year we’ve really

noticed our 4WD community abiding by the beach driving rules, there were no recorded breaches of the protective fence and as a result no known losses from nests being driven over,” saidTanya Cross, MidCoast Council’s Sustainability and Natural Assets Coordinator.

Prime nesting beaches for the endangered birds include the Winda Woppa area as well as Farquhar/Manning Point and Harrington.

The birds nest on our beaches in summer, with extremely well-camouflaged eggs and chicks on sand nests being almost invisible.

This makes them vulnerable to 4WDs, foxes, domestic dogs and even beach walkers, who may crush the eggs or continually

disturb parent birds and keep them away from the nest, leaving eggs and chicks vulnerable to predation from

dogs and seagulls.

“Our beaches are one of the most important breeding sites for Little Terns in NSW, normally producing up to a quarter of

To protect the eggs and chicks a multiagency working group has been established consisting of representatives from MidCoast Council, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Crown Lands, Hunter Local Land Services, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Taree Indigenous Development and Employment, bird watching groups and essential local volunteers.

This group has been busy stepping up efforts in recent breeding seasons to control wild dogs and foxes, install education signage and construct temporary fencing to protect shorebird nesting sites.

“By working together these efforts have seen many shorebird chicks reach adulthood in the past and we hope for even greater success next year.”

At the peak of the breeding season this year there were around 60 breeding Little Tern pairs with nearly 30 juveniles observed in the Hawks Nest area, however, a bait shy foxes, and on occasion domestic dogs gaining access to the fenced off areas meant the numbers were down on previous years in the Harrington/Farquhar areas.

“We will plan with our working group again next year to hopefully see an even stronger season, but the 4WD activity is really promising and we appreciate the community’s assistance by observing the signage and following the beach driving rules,” added Tanya.

Roads focus – Flood recovery WITH more than 100 landslides across the region, clearing and stabilising mountain roads is a major part of the flood recovery process, while damaged pavement is keeping Council’s patching crews busier than ever.

“Working through damage of this scale is a multifaceted process,” explained Rob Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering.

“While our patching work is highly visible, coordinating the major work that needs to be done across our mountain roads can take months.

“We had more than 40 landslips on one road – that’s what we’re dealing with – so once we were

able to get past one slip, we were cut off by another, and that means we were simply trying to clear a path through before we could even assess the damage and safety issues.”

Specialist machinery is required, as well as qualified contractors, to complete the major repair work, but these teams and equipment are in demand across the State which can cause further delays.

Rob said his teams understand the community’s frustrations with the time it’s taking for some roads to reopen or what appears to be limited repair work, but the breadth of the damage is much bigger than what was expected and work is prioritised according to safety, the number of people

Local providers of the area are desperately begging for more social and affordable housing, from the labour opposition to community organisations including Homelessness Australia, The Salvation Army, The Red Cross, and various councils.

“What we are seeing now is that this indifference has created a community-wide housing crisis.

“It’s not just low income

“Our number one priority when tackling the recovery of our roads, is safety,” explained Rob. “That’s why we will patch first, where possible, as a temporary measure to ensure the road is safe to travel on, and until we can get in and do a full reconstruction or more thorough repair.

“The hardest part to understand though, is that our roads program now has to change to accommodate the urgent work on our roads that remain closed since the floods, we need to get our network fully reopened and this will mean rescheduling some works in favour of others.”

Help At Hand

By Marian SAMPSON WHILE the severe weather event is now just over a month ago many are still being impacted by flood waters, insurance claims and damage bills.

We don’t often think of getting good news from the ATO but people in Port Stephens and the surrounding region who have been impacted are able to access help from the ATO. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reassuring communities that support is available for those affected by the New South Wales (NSW) and South-East Queensland (SEQ) floods in March.

The ATO recognises the challenging conditions faced by those in affected areas, especially small businesses,

and while their tax affairs may not be top of mind, support is available.

Assistant Commissioner Andrew Watson said that people affected by the disaster should contact the ATO if they are struggling to meet their tax and super obligations.

“Whilst the immediate danger has passed, we understand that there are lasting impacts for these communities, on top of challenges likely already being faced for businesses impacted by COVID-19.

“We are committed to assisting people get back on track.

“We have a range of practical options available to support those who have been affected by the floods, whether you’re an individual, business owner or primary

producer we want to work with you to help sort out your tax affairs.” Mr Watson said.

“We know your tax affairs may be the last thing on your mind, but we’re here to help when the time is right.

“If you’re struggling with your tax and super obligations as a result of the floods, give us a call on 1800 806 218 to discuss how we can support you.

Gas Fired Recovery Driving Climate Change

POWER is being consumed by Australians at an alarming rate with Australians being some of the biggest carbon emitters per capita in the world.

A few days out from the Federal budget, Energy Minister Angus Taylor has announced $58.6 million for new gas projects, and released the government’s National Gas Infrastructure Plan; Interim Report.

However the Climate Council is convinced that gas is not the answer for the Hunter.

“The Morrison Government should not be funnelling taxpayer dollars into gas, and making longterm plans around an industry that’s driving climate change.

“Gas is already being out-competed by clean, affordable, renewable energy,” said Climate Council Senior Researcher, Tim Baxter.

“This is yet another attempt from the Morrison Government to prop-up its expensive and unnecessary ‘gas-fired recovery’,” he said.

This announcement comes a day after the Climate Council released an alarming new report in conjunction with Asthma Australia, that found gas used in the home harms people’s health, while the process of extracting gas exposes communities to hazardous substances.

During his visit to Williamtown last week the Prime Minister said, “I welcome the Tallawarra

“I think that's a great contribution to the task that we have to replace the capacity that will be lost as a result of Liddell.

“But the Energy Minister Angus Taylor and I know what the task is, and that means there's a lot more that still needs to be done.

“And that's what will be guiding our decision on Kurri Kurri.

“And as I said before, when I was here in the Hunter earlier in the year, this is about ensuring we have a gas-fired recovery, and that's what the Hunter needs.

“And I can assure you we'll be taking decisions consistent with that, and when we’re in a position to make further

Telling the colourful life story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, this biopic will certainly rock you.

Charting the band’s formation and meteoric rise through the 1970s, the film lovingly recreates iconic concerts and music, all the way from seedy bars to their 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. Previously best known for his work on Mr. Robot, Rami Malek’s redefining role netted the star an Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actor’s Guild Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his transformation into the flamboyant singer, who had to grapple with his ego, sexuality and illness at the height of his fame.

Reality TV with a heart, this series struck a chord when it premiered at the end of 2019. It follows a group of people on the autism spectrum as they search for love and companionship. Hopeful, enlightening and full of depth, you won’t witness raucous dinner parties studded with fights and deception, which would rake in the ratings on other networks.

Refreshingly, season two premieres with a handful of participants from last season continuing their journeys as couples. Michael returns, heart still open and searching, while we also meet some new faces such as Jodi.

Save Triple Zero For Saving Lives

NEW South Wales Ambulance, joined by the New South Wales Police Force are urging residents to only call Triple Zero in emergency situations From March 2020 to 31 March 2021 NSW Ambulance

responded to more than 200,000 Triple Zero calls where no patient was taken to hospital.

It was reported that during this period, there were an alarming number of calls regarding trivial matters including 1036 calls

about constipation, 662 calls for toothaches, 215 calls for earaches, 167 for boils, 157 for insomnia and 16 for hiccups.

By calling Triple Zero for trivial matters or a prank, it puts a strain on the limited services

NSW Ambulance Assistant Commissioner Steven Norris, Director of Control Centres said, “We want the public to think before calling us for trivial matters.

“If it isn’t a medical emergency, please consider other health services such

as your GP, a pharmacist or a registered nurse at HealthDirect which is available 24 hours a day.”

Mr Norris said that nonemergency calls to the Triple Zero line take paramedics and call takers away from the most important job- saving lives.

The NSW Police Force also reported receiving

almost 800 000 requests for assistance via Triple Zero, in addition to more than 580 000 non-emergency reports through the Police Assistance Line and the NSW Police Community Portal.

Paterson to strong for Roos THE Karuah Roos had their first home game on Mother's Day, going down 24-18 against Paterson River.

Before kickoff, a minute's silence was held for former Roos player, coach, committee member and supporter George Rideway.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family at this very sad time, he will be missed by all,” said Sonja Evans of the Karuah Roos.

Once play commenced, Paterson were the first to put points on the board with two tries and one conversion to

James Foster then crossed the line for Karuah to bring the score to 10/4.

Paterson then crossed again to take the score to 14/4 at half time.

After the restart, Jack Bills scored for the Roos to

Aiden Bills then intercepted a pass, running almost the full length of the field with the crowd up on the feet cheering him along.

He scored under the black dot before converting his try to equal the score at 14 all.

Are there any processes I need to look at?”

AS property owners, we don’t own the land that constitutes our nature strip, yet Councils expect us to care for and maintain it. Additionally, if there are existing trees or shrubbery we can’t cut/remove them – they’re Council assets and Council’sresponsibility – consequently nature strips have become a bit of a grey area. Nature strips have practical functions, predominantly ensuring clear sight lines for pedestrians and traffic, but that doesn’t mean we’re all consigned to maintaining wastelands.

Rules vary between Councils regarding what can be done. Some Councils prevent any plantings, others are more flexible but have strict guidelines. Still other Councils have fully embraced residents’ requests to plant vegetable gardens, or small shrubs/flowering plants with spectacular results: reducingtraffic pollution, creating shade, thereby reducing that hideous bare asphalt heat, reducing run-off and providing welcome safe havens for insects and birds. And one of the best results? The improvements in human health and wellbeing by providing not only an aesthetically pleasing vision but a means for the community to connect and engage. Start with the Council’s website, check their guidelines and go from there. Here’s to planting success!

North Arm Cove water access DEAR News Of The Area, I CONGRATULATE the Editor on the 6 May edition of News Of The Area as I count it amongst the very best I have read from this paper over the last 20 years.

Interesting front page story suggesting Councillor Len Roberts may retire at the next election due in September.

I have stood in the heat, the rain and the cold at the North Arm Cove booth handing out his ‘How To Vote’ cards over many elections.

I was also involved in his crusade by coach to NSW Parliament house at the time of the highway bypass of Karuah seeking fly overs for the exits to North Arm Cove and Tea Gardens. This is still a pressing need today due to increased tourism and our proximity to Sydney.

Len Roberts achievements in this part of the Shire were listed in the story but it failed to say that the North Arm Coves number one WISH was for a trailer boat ramp to be constructed in this suburb which has 90% of its boundary with Port Stephens waterway, but no way of getting access to the water.

This issue was pursued by my committee

for 20 years and by our predecessor committee for some 25 years before that and yes we all failed to achieve it.

Ever since Walter Burley-Griffin developed North Arm Cove to become Port Stephens City over 100 years ago, the lack of a boat ramp and access to the jetty is the area's number one scandal.

The State Government spent in excess of $60,000 on a study by an independent environmental expert which came to the conclusion that Medina Bay was the only practical site for its construction, which my committee and the community had been suggesting to Council for many years.

We know where the blockage to construction is located and our Councillor Len Roberts was unable to clear it.

It is a scandal that this construction has not happened and unfortunately the politicians can't seem to get through that swamp either.

I am of the opinion that this will all come to light at some time because North Arm Cove is the only waterfront location in NSW without access to the water and we would all like to know why this situation has evolved, preventing construction.

Community Coordinator Required?

DEAR News Of The Area,

THE following is something I have been passionate about for lots of years, was just a thought to put it out there to the community.

I belong to several organisations of the community (ie) Probus, Golf Club, Myall Craft Centre, not so many as I used to belong, however.

Over the last 20 odd years I have found that this community is in urgent need of a ‘coordinator’ who can make a list of major planned events from all sections (ie Golf Club, Bowls, Probus, View Club etc).

"Why?", you ask.

Because time and time again we have major events happening on the same day, which is very frustrating to many of us who want to go to both and this includes North Arm Cove and Pindimar.

If we had a list of yearly major events, kept at the Information Centre for all to access, then other special events could be planned around them...so simple.

Note in point at the moment is the special fashion event advertised last week which is going to be on Sunday 23 May the very same day of the Mixed Foursomes at the Golf Club (which is a yearly event planned at the end of previous year).

I know several ladies would like to go to the fashion event, myself included, but will now have to miss out.

This is only one instance of ‘double booking’ which might have been avoided if a list of all events was available, especially charity events where the more people who attend means the more money raised.

So...is anyone out there in the community interested in taking this on for next year?

Oh, Mr K, you know sometimes when I seek solutions I turn to philosophy or case law or a thesis written by a student having an existential crisis, and sometimes I need to look no further than Kermit, who made a very valid point when he sang, ‘It’s not easy being green.’

Despite all the information out there on the benefits to ourselves and our planet when we cut down or even cut out meat, vegetarians get a bad rap.

Vegans are for some akin to the antiChrist, such is the level of hatred and taunting they receive for making what is often an ethical decision based on being kind to other creatures who have no say in their destiny.

Still, your daughter’s approach is a bit in-your-face, and that is part of the issue.

Some vegans and vegos happily go about their lives without discussing their choices and others, like the militant vegan, chain themselves to abattoirs and post videos of pigs squealing and chickens being boiled alive, which is a bit unpalatable when you’re sitting down to your Sunday bacon and egg roll.

Dinners must be a rollicking affair at your place, Mr LK. I can imagine your wife bringing her casserole to the table and your daughter warming up her vocal chords before starting a plaintive rendition of Old MacDonald Had a Farm.

It is enough to put anyone off their meal. May I suggest you serve fish? Then you will just have to sit there and watch her silently gulping, which, although distracting, is certainly quieter.

Make Music Day

LOCAL musicians in New South Wales are being invited to apply for one of six $15,000 grants as part of the NSW Government’s support of Make Music Day. Classified as ‘small project grants’, musicians who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to get involved and deliver music performances on either Sunday 20 June and/ or Monday 21 June 2021.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Rob Stokes said, “This is a

great opportunity for local artists who have done it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic to perform in some of the State’s most popular public spaces.”

The grants are in support of worldwide Make Music Day, a free celebration of music making across the globe on 21 June.

Make Music Day was founded by Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture in France in 1982.

Titled, ‘Fête De La Musique’ (French: Festival of Music/ Make Music) the

concept was a music festival that anyone and everyone could be a part of.

Since its origin, the holiday has spread to more than 800 cities in over 120 countries.

Don Hawin, Minister for the Arts spoke about NSW talent, “NSW has an incredible calibre of live music acts to showcase to the world so we are inviting individuals, groups, bands, and more to apply.”

“This funding will be music to the ears of local musicians and their communities, who have been robbed of so many opportunities due to the pandemic,” Mr Harwin said.

Rates Structure Changes A SINGLE rates structure developed for the entire MidCoast region will come into effect from 1 July 2021.

The rates harmonisation process is a requirement of the State Government for merged councils to standardise the rating approach across the three former council areas, and is required to be in place for the 2021-22 financial year.

Under the new structure, which aims to distribute the rates burden more equitably across the region, over 80% of property-owners will either have no change, or experience less than a $50 a year increase, while some will experience a decrease to their annual rates.

“We have worked hard over the past 12 months to devise a new rating structure that minimises the extent of any negative financial impact on as many of our ratepayers as possible,” explained Adrian Panuccio, MidCoast Council’s General Manager.

“The process of harmonising rates has also been an opportunity to simplify and build efficiencies in the way we apply rates.”

changing and why over coming weeks, harmonising rates does not change the total amount of rating income Council can collect.

This is controlled by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal through an annual rate peg.

An online calculator has been developed to help property-owners understand how the new structure will impact their individual circumstances.

Entering a property address will display the category or subcategory applied to the property in the new structure, and the change in annual rates.

Individual phone appointments with members of Council’s rates team are also available, along with in-person appointments at Bulahdelah, Wingham, Gloucester, Taree and Forster.

The Health Services Union has launched a hard-hitting advertising campaign targeting Nationals MP Pat Conaghan and the Prime Minister, urging them to address Australia’s aged care crisis in the upcoming budget.

“Aged care residents and hard-working staff have spent far too long waiting for this government to act.

Homecare Packages have been increased and for many this is the gold standard of care that they would like to access, being able to stay in your own home rather than entering a facility is a positive option.

While Homecare Packages are generally delivered by aged care organisations, there are now platforms such as Mable.com.au that allow you to organise and recruit your own home care team.

One Port Stephens family that are accessing a Level 4 Homecare Package via a platform have found, “It is relatively easy to navigate and recruit people to deliver care and the carers tend to get paid more, so they are happy, and mum is happy to be able to stay at home, which she wouldn’t be able to do without the Homecare Package.”

Scott Morrison is being pressured to deliver more for the Aged Care Sector in the upcoming budget, which will be delivered Tuesday 11 May 2021.

It generally affects older people and can result in compromising quality of life and reducing physical activity.

Arthritis Australia tells us that, “Research has found that regular exercise is one of the most effective treatments for arthritis.”

Regular exercise can improve mobility and joint flexibility, build muscle strength and improve posture and balance while

decreasing pain, fatigue and muscle tension and stress.

“Just as importantly, physical activity will improve your overall health.”

Simply put, everyone living with or without arthritis should be doing appropriate regular exercise.

“The important thing is to choose the activities that best suit your condition, health and lifestyle.

“Before you start to exercise it is important to ask your doctor and healthcare team to help you to develop a suitable program and choose the best activities for you.”

Working on strengthening muscles can take pressure off sore joints, improve balance and strengthen bones which can assist with osteoporosis.

Improving your general fitness may involve working out hard enough to puff during a brisk walk.

Low impact exercising is a great way to get back into physical activity.

Examples of low impact exercises are walking, aqua aerobics, swimming, tai chi, yoga, pilates, cycling and dancing.

Gardening, taking the dog for a walk and even choosing the stairs helps too.

When it comes to how much exercise we should be doing, the general rule of thumb is 30 minutes a day most days of the week.

People with arthritis may need to rest more during a flare up.

Do not vigorously exercise a joint that is red, hot, swollen or painful.

Warming up before exercise and cooling down after exercise is also good practice.

If you don’t like to exercise alone, consider bowls or croquet.

BOWLERS were saddened to hear of the passing of former member, John Adam.

John was a Life Member of the Country Club, a past director of the Country Club as well as one of our past bowlers.

Our condolences to John’s family at this sad time.

5 May A dismal weather forecast, and threatening rain kept numbers down today for the Wednesday Nominated triples competition.

Nonetheless 44 hardy souls turned up and most teams managed their 16 ends in the first game before the rain put a stop to any further play.

The winners on 10 points were Bob Peady, John Yabsley and Doug Naylor and the Lucky Losers on 9 points were Ron Rowe, Peter Gurney and Ross Barry.

7 May One semi-final of the Club Championship Pairs was played today after early morning showers.

The team of Geoff Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge played Neil Kibble and Ron Webster in what was to be an enthralling game.

Well into the match, the scores were tied at 11-11, with Neil and Ron reproducing the form they displayed in their quarter final.

A loose end followed, and Geoff and Dennis capitalised adding a succession of threepointers to take the match 22-12 and to book a place in the final.

Geoff and Dennis will play the winner of the remaining game between the Chris Ross/Scott Fitzalan pair and the Greg Smith/Stu Dorahy combination.

8 May Round 9 of the Newcastle District Pennants competition

was played today with more mixed results.

Grade 4 seem certain to contest their Sectional playoffs with another good win away at Wallsend.

They won the match 9-1 and had a master board lead of about 20 shots.

Grade 5 played at home to Soldiers Point and had a disheartening loss, 0-10 and 43-68.

They have had a tough campaign this year.

Grade 6 avoided the same tactical blunder they made last week when they played Raymond Terrace at home.

They managed their first at-home win defeating the Terrace 9-1, and 79-54.

Grade 7 played away at Nelson Bay and had difficulty with the doughy green there losing 0-10 and 38-73.

All Tea Gardens Dolphins teams are sponsored by First national Real Estate.

Next week Grade 4 meet Beresfield at home, Grades 5 and 6 plays away at Nelson Bay and Grade 7 will end their season at home to Toronto.

Bowlers raise cash for Cancer Council

TUESDAY 4 May: Social bowls played a game of Triples and 4 games of Pairs.

Francis Betar played “swinger” second in the Triples match.

Dawn May, Francis and Lynda Richards started strongly by the 10th end they held a 10 shot lead against Lynne Green, Francis and Dawn Jones they ended up winning by 13 shots 19 v 6.

Pam Gilchrist and Judy McGavock were evenly matched against their opponents Irene Roberts and Bette Saillard.

On the 7th end Irene and Bette held a 5 shot lead but by the 10th end Pam and Judy had reversed this situation, neck to neck for the next 8 ends.

Final score 23 v 21, the winners Pam and Judy.

Deyonne Page and Jill McBride led all the way defeating Robyn Webster and Lyn Nightingale 17 v 12.

Christine Fossey and Ingrid Luck might have had Sheril Johnson and Judi Polak worried, leading 5 to nil on the 4th end or perhaps Sheril and Judi were just slow starters.

This contest could have gone either way but the victors were Christine and Ingrid by 1 shot 14 v 13.

With only 6 ends left to bowl Sheila Rattray and Maynie Roberts were cruising, a 16 shot lead (18 v 2) against their opponents Bev Rhodes and Karen McPhie.

Fortunately Bev and Karen made a comeback, narrowing the gap to 9 shots, but losing 20 v 11. The winners on the day winning with the highest score were Pam and Judy. The lucky raffle winner was Bette Saillard, thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

Thursday 6 May: Bring a Friend to Bowls Day combined with The Biggest Morning Tea and a catch up with TGWBC Golden Oldies.

Sadly rain prevented any chance of

heading to the green for a bowl, but much fun was had inside Tea Gardens Country Club.
