BCS Hospitality Teacher Jess Kelly said that even given the limitations of COVID 19; losing time to practice their skills and with no time to perfect their technique, the students did not disappoint.

New Tourism Signage Initiative

By Marian SAMPSON IN the past tourism businesses have endured long waits and had to jump through hoops to get a White on Brown Destination signpost on the highway, but that is now about to end.

A new digital one-stop-shop has streamlined the process for tourism businesses and councils to apply for white on brown tourism attraction signs, creating more opportunities to showcase their destinations.

The Visitor Attraction Signposting Program, a partnership between Destination NSW and Transport for NSW, has been improved according to the guiding principles of the NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 – putting the visitor first, leading with the State’s strengths, and accelerating digital innovation.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill

ON 14 October, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill was introduced by Alex Greenwich to the Parliament of NSW. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington, alongside 27 colleagues across all political parties, is a co-sponsor of the Bill.

“I’m a co-sponsor of the Bill that’s been introduced to the Parliament, because I want it to succeed.

“I want people who face terminal, incurable illness to have the choice to end their life peacefully and with dignity.

“People living in NSW should have the same options as those who live in every other state in Australia, where

these laws have already been passed,” Ms Washington said.

Ms Washington has been in contact with a number of community members about the proposal.

“In determining my position, I’ve listened to our community who’s overwhelmingly supportive of the proposal.

“I’ve spoken with doctors and palliative care professionals who are advocating for the change and I’ve heard from many people who have been personally, and tragically, impacted by the absence of choice.”

The bill wishes to enable eligible persons with a terminal illness to access voluntary assisted dying, establish a procedure for, and

regulate access to, voluntary assisted dying and establish the Voluntary Assisted Dying Board and appoint members and create functions of the board.

“I appreciate that this is a difficult issue and respect that people hold a range of views.

“But in Parliament, I will be voting in accordance with my conscience and the ove r wh e l m i n g majority of our c o m m u n i t y, in support of this muchneeded law,” Ms

Washington said.

The debate on whether to allow voluntary assisted dying in New South Wales will take place this month in the NSW Parliament.

explosive revelation that Eddie Obeid, a former Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council and a convicted criminal found guilty of misconduct in public office, was involved in the development.

The 1.4-hectare block in question was purchased from the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council for $600,000 in 2018.

The land was rezoned by MidCoast Council in April this year and a development application is likely to be lodged next year.

There is an obligation on parties to disclose all relevant information about their superannuation entitlements for consideration in family law property settlements.

When the name of a spouse's fund is known, a confidential application seeking relevant information about the member spouse's entitlement and its value can be made to the fund trustee by either the member or their spouse. Sometimes however spouses forget the whereabouts of their superannuation entitlements or deliberately avoid giving disclosure.

The Government recently released for consultation an exposure draft legislation and explanatory material that amends the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the Family Law Act 1975. Its purpose is to facilitate the identification and value of superannuation assets by parties to family law proceedings and leverage information held by the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

Unfortunately, the process will not be available

for those matters where court proceedings have not yet been commenced.

The exposure draft legislation provides for a party to family law property proceedings in the Family Court of Australia, Federal Circuit Court of Australia and Family Court of Western Australia to apply to the court to request information about the identity and value of their former partner’s superannuation assets from the ATO. The exposure draft legislation will also authorise the ATO to disclose this superannuation information to court registry staff for the purpose of relevant family law proceedings.

The new informationsharing process should make it harder for parties to hide or under-disclose their superannuation assets in family law proceedings, and hopefully reduce the time, cost and complexity for parties seeking accurate superannuation.

Len Roberts will be running again this election, with a group consisting of Janelle Matthews (Tea Gardens), Arthur Baker (Bulahdelah), Cliff Hoare (Harrington), Mel Rosamond (Old Bar) and Mike Parsons (Taree).

Len says he is running again as he understands how vital it is to have a local representative in the Council.

“Unless everybody in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest votes local, it's almost impossible to get a representative from this area.

“We need it, we cannot lose your voice and that’s something I've always feared,” Len said.

Throughout his time on Council in the past, Len established the Southern Area Reference Group that provided locals with a conduit to Council, ensuring that locals can have a say and maintain on Council’s radar.

Mike Parsons is number two on Len’s ticket, a Taree local who is heavily involved in the community.

Mike used to own MidCoast Ford and is President of Mid North Coast Football, which reaches as far as Port Macquarie.

“He knows that it’s important that we have representation from this end and that’s why I’ve gotten him involved,” Len said.

Another member of his group is Mel Rosamond from Old Bar, a place that hasn’t had representation in Council for many years.

“They have the exact same problems that we have down here.

“They have a problem with erosion in the Old Bar like we have at Jimmys Beach and they have a problem with the river needing to be dredged,” Len said.

Len has been serving on the Estuary River Catchment Committee as co-chair and believes that another term on Council can ensure that action is taken to get the Manning River cleaned up.

He has worked for many years on the policy of ‘Clean Water, Good Water’ and wants to continue this work if re-elected.

“Whether it be the Myall, the Karuah, the Manning or just the Lakes, water is important to the land and to liveability and that’s where my focus has been,” Len said.

Bulahdelah local Arthur Baker (OAM) is also running on Len’s ticket.

out on a voice as Great Lakes has grown and wanted to make sure that they didn’t miss out this election,” Len said.

Janelle Matthews is another Tea Gardens local who is passionate about local and community organisations including Masters Swimming.

She volunteers with the group at nursing homes, singing and playing music for community members.

“She’s got a heart for recreation in this town, not just for young or old people - she sees the need for connectivity,” Len said.

Recently, Len has worked to support upgrades to the Tea Gardens Pool whilst ensuring that costs stay low for the community, pushed for upgrades to the Community Centre, koala protection and work on the Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan amongst others.

“These are the things that are important to a community.

“We would be neglected if we didn’t have a voice,” Len said.

“We need Shire-wide representation and that’s why I’m urging locals to vote 1 for the Len Roberts Group, 2 for Karen Hutchinson (Stroud) and 3 for Katheryn Smith (Gloucester),'' Len concluded.

Business bushfire preparedness q MidCoast businesses can prepare for emergencies and disasters by downloading the free Get Ready Business toolkit from Resilience NSW.

FOLLOWING the campaign to ensure every MidCoast household has a bushfire survival plan, MidCoast Council is now urging local businesses to Get Ready for emergencies too.

Being prepared can improve recovery; it can mean the difference between your business reopening quickly after an event or remaining closed.

MidCoast Council Mayor David West says that MidCoast businesses have experienced drought, bushfire, flood, now pandemic - and all in quick succession.

It’s simply good business to be prepared for all disruptions.

“The good news is that it’s never been easier.

“Get Ready Business has been specially designed to help NSW business owners prepare

for emergencies and disasters in five simple steps – just like the household bushfire survival plans,” said Mayor West.

MidCoast businesses can prepare for emergencies and disasters by downloading the free Get Ready Business toolkit from Resilience NSW. The toolkit helps a business prepare for an emergency, and may make all the difference in recovering quickly – even if power, telecommunications and transport routes are cut.

Report Recommends Increased Support for Councils to Protect Local Heritage COUNCILS could have more say in protecting NSW’s invaluable heritage and history under recommended changes to the State’s Heritage Act. Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President Linda Scott said a Parliamentary report released following

a review of the almost 50-year old Act included recommendations for greater powers for councils to manage local heritage and broader incentives for ownership of heritage property.

“Councils across NSW are passionate about our unique

heritage buildings and have long called for changes to the 1977 Act to better enable them to protect and maintain historical properties,” Cr Scott said.

Stroud House Fire On 4 November, Booral, Stroud and Stroud Roads and Wards River RFS Brigades attended a house fire in Stroud.

The team successfully managed to get the fire under control and extinguished the blaze.

Pindimar Tea Gardens RFS This weekend the Brigade headed off to Woody’s Garden Centre to support the community.

The event had a sausage sizzle and allowed members of the community to pick up a Koala friendly tree.

Most notably, children from the area enjoyed learning about what the local

firefighters do, whilst getting to try their hand at the fire hose.

Horse Safety NSW Rural Fire Service reminds horse owners to make the horses part of their bush fire survival plan.

“Including your animals and livestock in your plans will reduce stress when there’s a fire, allow clearer thinking and improve chances of keeping you and your livestock safe,” a representative from the service said.

Important questions to consider include: Are you able to sufficiently care for your stock for three to seven days, or longer in a prolonged fire emergency? Are your feed/ fodder supplies sufficient, safe and accessible for your livestock? Do you have a safe place on your property for livestock? Are animal

houses/ sheds protected and do you have the basic medical supplies and rescue equipment?

Traffic Travellers were left frustrated and late after large traffic delays on roads leading to the Pacific Highway on both Friday and Sunday this week.

Destination Barrington Coast brand recognised at Tourism Awards

By Marian SAMPSON THE Barrington region is famous for snow on the Barrington Tops and rugged high country, however a recent change in marketing is paying off for MidCoast Council.

The area is home to the Gathangspeaking people, and sits within Worimi Country which spans from the Hunter River to the Manning River at Taree and west to the Barrington Mountain Range.

The Barrington Coast features stunning beaches, Broughton Island and other small islands and areas of Indigenous significance including Dark Point.

It is also home to the Myall Lakes National Park, Mungo Brush and is home to the populations of Dingos, Koalas and Platypus.

The Barrington Coast is certainly a place where you can stay, play and explore some of the best nature experiences in NSW. MidCoast Council’s destination brand Barrington Coast is a finalist in two categories of the New South Wales Tourism Awards for 2021.

THE Myall U3A was recently enthralled by a fascinating presentation from Patricia Henderson, who has a Master of Arts, Ancient History, about the Roman system of government in its glory days.

Patricia's research is meticulous and she certainly brings her passion for her subject to her frequent presentations.

“My talk was about the glory, and some might say, dying days of republican Rome, the century leading up to 27 BCE,” said Patricia.

“A concept that defined Roman social and political relations was ‘friendship’ (amicitia), or a mutual patron/client relationship.

“It was the misuse of this idea within the structure of the political system that enabled unscrupulous politicians like Crassus, Pompey and Julius Caesar to take control of the Roman government and to use it for their own ends.

“Their actions led to civil war and the rise of Octavian (later Augustus) and a new political climate in Rome under a ‘principate’, or empire, with Augustus as its first Emperor.

“The lawyer Cicero lived through these times and I was able to draw on his court cases, articles and letters to relive this fascinating era.”

The Myall U3A would like to thank Patricia for her fascinating presentation which left her audience with a feeling that we need to reflect upon modern democracy and the lessons we can use from the past.

THE Y NSW, in partnership with MidCoast Council, is thrilled to announce the opening of Tea Gardens Swimming Pool from Saturday 4 December 2021.

In line with NSW Health guidance and current Government restrictions the pools will be staffed at all times and customers will be required to scan the QR code upon entry.

The Y will be offering a number of exciting new programs and services at the centre, including swimming lessons, recreational and lap swimming, school programs, birthday parties and a kiosk and retail outlet.

Thank You Hampers celebrate local businesses AN outstanding response from satisfied MidCoast customers has seen 100 local businesses celebrated as part of the Thank You Hamper campaign held by MidCoast Council and local business chambers.

Off the back of devastating bushfires and floods, local businesses have adapted to changing public health orders and restrictions as the global COVID-19 pandemic impacts our community.

Small businesses have faced one of their toughest years.

Many have suffered losses, some have revised what they do more than once to retain customers.

Others have worked to capture new markets and radically change their offerings.

“These efforts should not go unnoticed

“Over 250 people put forward nominations, all telling us amazing stories about our local businesses.”

Over the last week, MidCoast Council officers have been traversing the LGA delivering thank you hampers to 100 deserving businesses.

In addition, another 68 businesses were commended and will be receiving a #ShopMidCoast Gift Card and thank you card in the mail.

These hampers are filled with products sourced from our local area – just another way to recognise and

Planning for the future of Karuah A PLACE plan for Karuah, designed to improve liveability, increase well being and deliver economic growth in the area, was endorsed for exhibition at last week's Port Stephens Council meeting.

The Karuah Place Plan will provide the framework for the growth of Karuah.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said Karuah is a town on the move, with new housing, new business and increasing visitation.

“We know that more and more people are choosing Port Stephens as the place they call home.

“Demand for housing continues to grow and

towns like Karuah provide a unique opportunity for growth,” Mr Palmer said.

Strategic Planning Coordinator Brett Gardiner said the Karuah Place Plan identifies an opportunity for the development of 800 new residential lots.

"Future growth areas have also been identified along with potential employment zones, which will help drive new business and new jobs," Mr Gardiner said.

“The Karuah Place Plan highlights opportunities for new housing and employment growth with a focus on protecting the valuable biodiversity of this

Sometimes, it’s hard to know whether to cringe or be thrilled by another series based on a great book.

Normal People recently proved how expertly the tricky adaptation process can be done, but the jury’s out on this reworking of Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed book in which racism is inversed. The premise of an alternate world where Europe has been colonised by black people is arresting. In this second instalment, Callum (Jack Rowan) and Sephy (Masali Baduza, pictured) are desperate to be alone together.

If you think getting a pet is as simple as waltzing into a pet shop or local RSPCA and pointing at the dog you fancy through a window, or simply paying a breeder and rocking up six weeks after the due date to pick up your furry friend, you’d be wrong. If The Dog House Australia is anything to go by, acquiring a pet involves a meeting of minds – and that isn’t a bad thing at all.

Anyone watching this heartwarming series is reminded how important choosing the right pet is for a fruitful and affectionate relationship. Slow down NSW AFTER nine people tragically lost their lives on NSW roads last week, NSW Police Force are reminding motorists travelling across the state this weekend to slow down, be patient and drive to the conditions.

Motorists experienced

delays and increased traffic on the roads in areas across the state since regional travel resumed for vaccinated residents on Monday 1 November 2021.

Acting Superintendent Ben Macfarlane said police were deeply saddened by the deaths on roads last week in the state’s west, south-west and south, bringing the total lives lost this year to 236.

“There are families, friends and communities grieving right now for loved ones lost on NSW roads this week. Our hearts go

out to them,” said Acting Superintendent Macfarlane.

“Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will continue to do everything in our power to keep people safe on the road, but we need the understanding and the help of road users.

“Please think of others on the road by driving safely.

behaviour that endangers lives, and those ignoring road safety messages and disobeying road rules can expect swift police action.

Police from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and local officers will maintain a strong presence on roads across the state to ensure people are following the road rules.

They will be looking out for dangerous, distracted, drug and drink driving (Four Ds) – among other offences – that put road users at risk.

Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said the Australian Government was proud to invest in AIS wellbeing and community engagement programs.

“We know the positive influence athletes can have – they inspire and motivate us,” Minister Colbeck said.

“So it’s wonderful to see these athletes spreading positive messages of mental health and resilience with school-aged children who are dealing with the increased pressures associated with the pandemic.

“As we saw during the highly successful Tokyo 2020

Olympics and Paralympics, Australians take great pride and inspiration from our athletes.

“I commend those leaders who are now sharing their stories and experiences through the AIS Black Dog Mental Fitness Program. You are making a difference.”

AIS Director of People Development and Wellbeing Matti Clements says the AIS is proud to partner with the Black Dog Institute to deliver this important community outreach program.

“Not only does this program help our young people build their mental fitness and resilience, but it also provides our high performance athletes an opportunity to meaningfully connect with their community and learn personal and professional skills that will help them during their sporting careers and beyond.”

Cyclist Paige Greco, who marked her Paralympics debut in Tokyo with three medals, including gold and a world record in the 3000m Individual Pursuit C1-3, said the Mental Fitness Program

allows her to give back to her community.

“Mental health is so important.

“I think sometimes as athletes we place a lot of emphasis on our physical health and our wellbeing, however, understanding mental health and the impact it has on our daily life is so vital,” Greco said.

“Enforcing positive psychology strategies and understanding that it is something that should be spoken about is very important to me and it means

a great deal to be able to speak to young people and share my experiences.”

Australian hockey player Josh Beltz said, “I’m very proud that I’m able to be involved in a program that openly discusses and advocates for mental health awareness.

“As athletes we experience both incredible highs and devastating lows, so to use that experience and share the mental fitness program with kids is something I am very much looking forward to.”

Sporting Heroes Deliver Mental Health Fitness Presentations

By Marian SAMPSON THERE’s no surprise that young people have been struggling with mental health issues due to the pandemic.

Loss of grassroots sport has also taken its toll as isolation and loss of team engagement has hit youth hard.

However local clubs can now access some amazing presentations from Australia’s Tokyo Olympic heroes.

Australian athletes overcame unprecedented challenges to succeed at the Tokyo Games, now 20 athletes from 16 sports will help children with their own mental health and resilience strategies as part of a national program between the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Black Dog Institute.

There is strong evidence that young people can benefit from role models when it comes to developing mental fitness.

COUNCIL Round-Up

The term was extended a year and the election was to be in September but has been postponed until December 4.

No election material can be handed out within 100m of a polling place except for posters.

The council term has been interesting and hard work trying to get the processes right after the amalgamation of four entities.

It has been particularly hard on the former Great Lakes area as it was the only council to be found ‘fit’.

B Newton was the winner with 39 points from M South with 34 points.

T-L Smith won the jackpot.

The vets played their Monthly Mug on Thursday November 4.

J Parnell was the winner with a terrific 66n from K Hughes with 69n and T Crowther with 70n.

NTPs were S Sharp, L Russell, G Willadsen and K.Hughes.

Ken was also the best putter with 30 putts.

In my view we have trodden water so the others could catch up, which is what we all expected. Nonetheless, we play with the hand dealt and I believe we are on the right track for the future.

There have been several myths about the Council and with a little fact checking we find: 1. Council Finances are a mess. False.

Council has had four unqualified audits.

An unqualified report reflects fair and transparent financial statements in compliance with NSW treasury accounting principles and statutory requirements.

The NSW audit office says our accounts are in good shape.

We can do better by having grants spent efficiently and effectively.

2. Central office at Taree cost $50m.

False.

Purchase of the land, construction and fit out came in around $28m.

Add in the savings through efficiencies, and the sale/rent of the other offices, we are well ahead.

The whole cost was funded through property investments and loans which are being paid off through investment returns.

3. Services to the community have dropped off. Partly True.

Some areas, through grants and infrastructure renewal, have benefitted, whilst others have been treading water.

Much of this has had to do with fire, flood and Covid.

Recovery has strained the workforce and finances.

Subsequent grants have picked up the financial burden but the workforce has had to carry a mammoth legacy.

They have done exceedingly well despite the circumstances.

4. Council is dysfunctional. False.

All decisions are a majority decision.

That is how democracy works.

Not liking a majority decision does not make a council dysfunctional.

A dysfunctional council fails to get business done.

Koala Plan

I find it terribly disconcerting that a paper from Taree suggests that Council does not have a plan for the protection and management of koalas in our area, when the opposite is true and the former Taree Council had no protection for its koala population at all.

A few weeks ago, Council staff met with representatives (via Zoom) from our local koala group to discuss ways

YOU just took me back to a childhood affliction I had for several years which manifested as a stomach ache, but was actually a chronic need to stay home and be doted on by my nanna.

This was a carefully orchestrated illness with symptoms commencing the night before.

I would leave a few mouthfuls of my dinner and say I didn't feel great.

This was a master stroke as it meant I could go to my room and read instead of doing the dishes. Halfway through the night, I'd go into my parents' room and say I felt like I needed to vomit.

I'd then go to the bathroom and make retching sounds, planting further seeds of doubt into the mind of my fatigued mum.

In the morning, I'd feign stomach pains, which was normally enough, but if she suggested taking my temperature, I'd ask to do it in the bathroom as I was feeling queasy, and then I'd run the thermometer under the hot water tap.

Then I'd be delivered to my nanna's house on Mum's way to work where I'd make a miraculous recovery by about 10am.

COVID is a whole new ball game.

Not just for kids, I suspect, but for anyone who doesn't want to go to their workplace.

The whole 'soldier on' concept has been replaced by a need to stay home with the slightest symptom and the only punishment is a Q-tip up the nose.

Life has never been better, except for those of us who already work from home and are now surrounded by kids and partners, who happen to make the worst work colleagues ever.

Perhaps make your home environment less inviting.

You could do up a jobs list with unappealing tasks or become one of those irritating home-schooling experts, so manically enthusiastic about their dodgy attempts at the curriculum, that little Karl and Trinity can't wait to return to school.

we can implement our koala management procedures across the Shire.

This was in part brought about by my championing of the refusal of a DA in Tinonee because it was set to destroy koala habitat.

We were taken to court and we won.

We now have to ensure we have a Koala Management Plan for Tinonee and other areas.

I cannot thank our Koala Group enough, who volunteer their time to ensure koala protection.

All development in our area has to consider, most strongly, ways to ensure koala protection including climbing poles when erecting colorbond fences.

“We were all devastated by the images of burnt and injured wildlife during the black summer bushfires.

“It was a disaster that impacted around 3 billion native animals across the nation and we want to make sure we have the training in place to give injured wildlife the best chance of survival,” Mr Kean said.

DEAR News Of The Area, IS it safe for families with young children on Jimmys Beach when there are horses also on the beach?

We have rules and prohibitions about having 4wd vehicles and dogs on beaches, for good reason.

What is, I think, of concern are flighty horses either being ridden or led on beaches past young families

- children playing and doing unexpected things in the expectation that they are safe from this sort of danger.

Often dogs are on the beach too.

Today (Saturday 6 November) a number of horses were being ridden and one quite flighty horse being led by a very young girl along Jimmys in front of families from the Reflections Caravan Park.

The training package delivers on the NSW Government’s commitment to implement recommendation 53 of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry to provide guidance for firefighters on handling injured wildlife.

In addition to the wildlife training, the NSW Government is developing a framework to improve coordination of wildlife response during bushfires and other emergencies.

The track into the beach just off Tuloa Avenue had trails of wet, very smelly

horse manure.

Back in the Pool Sharon studied online over the winter months, successfully completing the Masters Swimming Australia National Coaching Accreditation Course.

“Our club members are already reaping the benefits of the experience and knowledge Sharon has gained from this course.

“Sharon’s sessions are creative and interesting and always give a great work out!” Chris said.

The Myall Masters continue to meet every Monday evening 4.45pm - 6.45pm, Wednesday morning 8.30am – 9.30am and Friday evenings 5.00pm – 6.00pm.

“Our season commenced on Monday 11 October,” said Chris Dunning, Publicity Officer for Myall Masters.

“The cold and rainy evening didn’t deter a healthy attendance of very keen swimmers.

“Now a month on, swimming sessions continue to be well attended by a very enthusiastic group of club members.”
