A BRAND new jetty for Tea Gardens is coming, with MidCoast Council asking boaties and locals

to review and comment on the concept plans for the new facility before Friday 16 April.

“We’ll be on site at Apex

Park from 1pm to 3pm on Wednesday 7 April to discuss the concept plans with boat ramp and jetty users,”

said Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge.

“Anyone with an interest in the project, or who would like to provide feedback, is welcome to drop in and

discuss with us.”

PM backs manufacturing in the area

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison returned to Port Stephens in the Hunter making this his third visit to the region in recent times.

The Prime Minister took the time to visit Energy Renaissance’s new site at Tomago where a $28 million plant is about to be built.

Once operational the facility will produce lithium batteries.

Energy Renaissance has been working in partnership with the University of Newcastle and the CSIRO on the development of the technology which will be used at the plant.

The facility is expected to be completed in October of 2021.

During the visit the Prime Minister launched the Federal Government’s resource roadmap.

The Prime Minister Scott Morrison told News Of The Area, “In the Hunter, they're building the future; on this site with lithium-ion batteries.

“When I think of all the regions of our country, it's very hard to consider a region that will benefit more from the economic policies we're putting in place than the Hunter.”

For some time now, the Australian government has been working internationally

through partnerships, on ways that Australia can be a part of the supply chains for critical minerals and rare earths.

“It has been a keen topic of our national-level discussions.

“It is a sovereign and strategic priority for Australia to ensure that we are hardwired into this supply chain around the world.

“Because these rare earths and critical minerals are what literally pulls together the technology that we will be relying on into the future,” said the Prime Minister.

Motoring On THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club is motoring onwards in 2021, recently welcoming six new members with vintage and unique cars.

The Club has been active despite COVID-19 restrictions, adhering to all the relevant safety guidelines.

With restrictions easing, the Club has now resumed regular monthly meetings at the Tea Gardens Hotel and monthly Club Runs to

Mr Seil hopes to see the annual event back and

In 2013 the NSW Code of Practice for the Charter of Victim's Rights was published. It was revised in 2015. The Code is intended to help government and nongovernment service providers understand how they can meet their obligations under the Charter and help victims of crime know what to expect from such service providers.

In NSW there are 3 different victim registers: • Victims Register – for victims of adult offenders • Juvenile Justice Victims Register – Juvenile Justice – for victims of juvenile offenders supervised by Juvenile Justice NSW, and • Specialist Victims Support Service Victims Services – for victims of forensic patients (A forensic patient is a person who has been found unfit to be tried for an offence and ordered to be detained in a correctional centre or mental health facility).

Victims can register and keep updated their contact information with Corrective Services NSW for any crime for

which an offender has received a custodial sentence. A victim who is registered with any of the registers will be informed of the offender/prisoner being released from gaol, or any parole being amended.

There is currently a criminal justice project being administered by the Department of Communities and Justice Strategy Management Office to develop and trial an app that will give victims access to the information they require without having to rely on others to provide them with the information. It is also intended to provide direct links to enable victims to easily access registration to the victim registers and to access information for preparing for court, court processes, and including notification in relation to amendments to bail conditions and what happens after court. This remains a work in progress.

THIS week Prime Minister Scott Morrison committed to our local environment.

The Prime Minister categorically stated that he does not support the PEP11 offshore gas exploration off the coast of Port Stephens, Newcastle and the Central Coast.

Asset Energy (also known as Advent) has lodged an application to National Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) to drill for gas 30km off the coast between Sydney and Port Stephens.

Today the Prime Minister was clear and decisive the answer was “No” he does not support PEP11 or the drilling for gas off our precious coastline.

On the topic Climate Change, the environment and the Brandy Hill Quarry project which is endangering koalas; the sensitive nature of the environment locally as well as the vulnerable dingo population at Hawks Nest the Prime Minister told News Of The Area, “I read recently a book, a friend of mine sent me a book by David Attenborough.

“I don't know if you've read it.

“I'd encourage people to read it - I think it's a very interesting read.

“And he makes a very important point.

“As serious as issues around climate change and these things are, he points out that, at the end of the day, what actually supports the

Vision For Region's Future

By Marian SAMPSON VISION is something we need from our leaders and the Prime Minister outlined his vision for the future of the Hunter this week when in Tomago.

The Prime Minister was enthusiastic about the Hunters future, particularly around innovative collaborative projects like the production of Lithium batteries.

He highlighted the positive nature of skills training for the future of the region and supporting more manufacturing while expanding trade markets.

The discussion focused on manufacturing, training and technology as well as innovation.

The Prime Minister said, “In so many ways, the Hunter is the model case.”

He believes that if it will work in the Hunter it is going to work in Australia.

“I'm seeing the collaboration between universities, science agencies, and investors.

There is passion and commitment of businesses, educators and the people of the Hunter.

“And I'm just keen to ensure that I'm working with the Hunter to remove any obstacles that could be in their way, because I can assure you, a policy problem solved

here in the Hunter means it's going to be a policy problem solved elsewhere in Australia.”

“Because these are the regions that I particularly want to see go ahead into the future.”

When it comes to manufacturing the Prime Minister is keen to see the Hunter continue to manufacture aluminium, be involved in training, science exploration and manufacturing medical products.

However, the Prime Minister did state that the process that the Treasurer has instigated in relation to the Port would continue and he expressed his hope that the process will achieve an outcome that will end with a Port of Newcastle that works for the Hunter.

The Prime Minister stopped short of committing the government to resolving the issue of compensations paid to New South Wales Ports.

Dingo Education To Assist BE DINGO-SMART With Cohabitation q

DINGOS are a hot topic in the Myall Lakes Region.

The area has recently been declared a hotspot by a University of Sydney Study for dingos living in the wild.

MidCoast Council is urging residents and visitors around Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest to be aware of increasing dingo/wild dog activity, including instances of aggressive behaviour towards people and pets.

There have been a number of reports received in recent weeks of dingoes threatening and even attacking residents and visitors and Council is urging the community to take safety precautions and be mindful of wild dog activity in the area.

Mat Bell Council’s Senior Ecologist, told News Of The Area, “Council has an adopted dingo / wild dog management procedure for Hawks Nest.

“It is based on a model adopted for Fraser Island, Queensland.

“The procedure is based on maintaining a record of dingo sightings and observations of behaviours.

“The behaviours are ranked on a sliding scale from benign / acceptable to unacceptable.

“Under the procedure, when an acceptablebehaviour threshold is crossed by an individual animal or pack of animals, then Council engages the services of a contractor to implement controls.

“This scale of escalating behaviours is usually associated with the animals losing their fear of humans from being fed, encouraged or accessing domestic food sources (rubbish, etc),” he said.

“There are no plans for a widespread cull as has been

reported on Facebook pages this week.

“The message is clear, feeding a Dingo/wild dog is not helping the animal.

“Penalties apply for anyone caught doing this.”

Bell said that while most observations and interactions in Hawks Nest involve acceptable dingo behaviours, Council had seen instances where the behaviour of some animals has crossed the acceptable threshold.

“This has involved the dingoes / wild dogs attacking people’s pets and displaying aggressive or threatening behaviour to people.

“As such, in accordance with the procedure, animals

Author talk MIDCOAST Council’s Libraries team is delighted to have author Anne Hutchison joining them for a Zoom event to chat about her book The Gift of Adoption.

Anne will be chatting about her first book and her powerful journey through parenthood, the challenges and triumphs of raising adopted foreign children, and the remarkable lessons that truly unveil the beating heart of a loving family.

Everyone is welcome to join the Zoom event on Thursday 11 March from 7pm to 8pm.

Anne is a retired science teacher who started her professional life as a medical scientist working at hospitals in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

In her late twenties, she went back to University to follow a passionate calling to become a teacher. She taught Science in the western suburbs of Sydney before taking up a position at a large independent school where she taught for thirty years.

Nerong Crash AT 9.45pm on 24 February 2021 a semi-trailer collided with a Pantech truck that was parked on the shoulder of the Pacific Highway at Nerong.

The Pantech had broken down on the highway and had it’s hazard lights activated.

The semi-trailer collided with the rear of the pantec truck, forcing it

about 30 metres down an embankment.

The semi-trailer continued about 50-80 metres up the road veering down a steep embankment and rolling on its side.

The semi driver suffered facial injuries and was conveyed by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital.

No life-threatening injuries occurred.

Secondhand and Collectibles Market

THE Bulahdelah Memorial Hall has been at the centre of life in town for almost 80 years.

This month the hall will be holding a ‘secondhand and collectibles market’.

The committee is hoping to see a great deal more on the stall tables including antiques, recycled goods, home grown produce and handicrafts.

The market is to be held inside and out at the War Memorial Hall on 72

Crawford Street on March 27.

The hall and surrounds will be pressed into service to hold the stalls and car boot sales.

Anyone hoping to take part will still find stalls available inside for $10 per table.

Field maintenance closures AS summer sports come to an end, MidCoast Council will be capitalising on the short break before winter sports begin, to rejuvenate grounds across the region.

The annual maintenance closure begins on select fields on 8 March and will continue through to 6 April.

Parks crews will be undertaking a range of procedures to make the most of the increased rainfall and

prepare the sports fields as well as possible for the high traffic over winter.

From insecticide spraying, weed spraying and fertilising of all parks areas, through to oversowing the main sports fields, it’s going to be a busy few weeks for the team.

“This is a crucial time for us every year but this year our team really has their work cut out for them with the increased rainfall

RECOGNISING the environmental sensitivity of Bulahdelah’s Lions Park camping site, MidCoast Council is undertaking a review to better formalise and adequately service the site.

While Lions Park, Bulahdelah is currently closed to camping, MidCoast Council is fully intending to reopen the site for travellers in the future.

Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell, has confirmed a process of formalising camping options at Lions Park is currently underway.

Initially closed as a result of COVID-19, the free camping area has remained closed while Council works through formalising the site and ensuring it is adequately serviced.

“The park is in an environmentally sensitive location on the Myall River,

so it is important we take this opportunity to look at providing amenities for those who use the site,” Mr De Szell explained.

The Myall River feeds into the Myall Lake system which is a RAMSAR listed wetland with very significant ecology.

Also under consideration are restrictions to the length of time campers can call Lions Park home, with it being restricted to short stays of in the order of 48-72 hours.

Being able to comply with COVID rules for registration is also part of the picture, however the site also lacks a formal approval as a camping site.

“We are working through this with the local Lions Club to ensure that all appropriate approvals are in place so that the facility can reopen for the travelling community.”

THE New South Wales Game Fish Association Interclub State Championship Competition was held on Thursday 25 February until Sunday 28 February in the NSW coastal regions including Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Sydney and many others.

A few of the many trophies for the weekend went to: Marika Wright, the most Tag and Release Points by an Adult Lady Angler.

Elmore Coetzee, the most Tag and Release Points by an Adult Male Angler, also awarded with most Marlin by an Angler with eleven Marlin.

Roads a headache for MidCoast Council

TALK of roads and the local councils that manage them often turn to complaints with motorists.

MidCoast Council is trying to get on the front foot, at the moment, of the issue of roads and rain.

Last week Council posted a media release explaining the challenges they face in dealing with the rain, potholes and increasingly frustrated

locals.

“Fixing roads properly is a timely, costly exercise and it’s not as simple as the community may think,” the statement said.

Daniel Park, MidCoast Council’s Manager, Operations North said the heavy rainfall contributes to further delays in road repair.

“Of course we’d love to be able to get out across the region and fully reconstruct our entire roads network, but it’s not as simple as that.

“This kind of consistent rain over a long period of time brings all our work to a halt and when we already have a backlog, it unfortunately sets us back even further.

“We know the community is upset when they see us patching the road, but this is the best temporary solution to improve safety on our roads in the interim, while we plan for full reconstruction through our major roads program.”

Locals have been vocal

about the issue recently.

Social media has included a number of cartoons and comments from locals drawing attention to the degrading road situation.

During periods of heavy rain, roads become susceptible to damage due to the movement of water across the surface and the softening ground underneath.

It’s not hard to see these effects around the region.

And this situation isn’t

“In the short term, communities must factor in an increase in coastal erosion events and undertake actions to keep livelihoods and businesses safe.

“However, to help prevent far more severe levels of coastal erosion in future, and to protect our beloved beaches and coastal infrastructure, we must rapidly cut emissions and address the root cause -

climate change."

The joint Mayors and Councillors statement goes on to say, “Schools and businesses have been forced to close, the lights have gone out, roads cut off, beaches washed away, and properties damaged.

“Many of our communities also experienced the Black Summer bushfire season of 2019-20.”

It is clear that the impacts of a changing climate and extreme weather are all around us.

MidCoast Council Onboard Climate Change Effort

By Marian SAMPSON IN an unprecedented effort, Mayors and Councillors from 15 NSW Local Government Areas including Mid Coast Council have joined together to lobby the Federal Government on Climate Change.

The Councils have recognised the cost of extreme weather events and are hoping to create change.

The joint statement states, “Extreme weather is hurting Australia, and our communities are paying the price.”

Heavy rain, gale-force winds, storm surges and flooding are damaging our communities, endangering our residents and costing us millions of dollars in clean up costs.

Coastal erosion is a highlight with the cost of remediation of this one issue spiralling.

Locally we only need to look at the damage that bushfires, and East Coast

Lows have caused to see that this issue needs addressing.

Dr Simon Bradshaw, Climate Council researcher told News Of The Area, “Our developed and populated beach communities like the ones near Port Stephens and the Myall coast are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise, worsening storm surges and coastal erosion driven by climate change.

The forecast includes that ‘Autumn is likely to be wetter than average’ with the bureau reporting the chance of above average rainfall to be over 70%.

In fact, ‘wetter than average’ is definitely the theme over the next fortnight and on through the next three months.

“As the closest tier of government to the community, we are responsible for warning our towns and cities of disaster risks, helping them prepare, fielding calls for help, and responding in the moment.

“We are exhausted by the immediate costs and challenges, and we are worried about what’s to come.”

Escalation of extreme weather events has seen something that used to occur every few years, now, we are facing them every few months.

A report by the Climate Council revealed that climatefuelled disasters have cost our national economy $35 billion over the past decade.

By 2038, the price tag of climate impacts will climb to $100 billion a year.

There is concern about how will our communities cope?

“We have the natural resources to become a world leader in renewable energies like solar and wind, and can create tens of thousands of jobs along the way.”

Local governments are embracing this opportunity, and are working out new ways to protect our communities and make our regions more

“We are also awaiting Council’s promised Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan and Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan as the next steps in delivering on Council’s 2020 commitments to local action.”

Luckily, there is always plenty of work to keep him busy. Tonight, Parker and the team investigate after the leader of a survival training course is found dead in the remote forest of a neighbouring island.

IT’S definitely a great time to invest in property, but which path you follow is really dependent on your personal circumstances. TUESDAY 2 March: Social bowls played three games of Fours and a game of Pairs, an opportunity for our Pennant teams to bowl together.

Prior to play, President Deyonne Page presented Jeanette Emmett her 10 year Member Certificate WBNSW. The score was 9 all on the 9th end Sheila Rattray, Jan Coomer, Jeanette Emmett and Kathie Rimmer v Lyn Nightingale, Irene Roberts, Dawn Jones and Judy McGavock.

The next five ends resulted in Judy's team remaining scoreless and Kathy's ladies adding 10 points to their tally, (19 v 9), by the 17th end the score was 19 v 14.

Only 20 ends played due to rain, Kathy's team winning 23 v 14.

Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker started strongly and continued the onslaught against Jean Glover, Lynn Green, Maynie Roberts and Dale Winter claiming victory by 11 shots, 24 v 13.

Perhaps you could have asked him to pause, mid-mouthful of chicken curry that you'd just lovingly put in front of him, to reflect on the fact that despite the incredible achievements of women, they are still underrepresented in senior positions, still likely to earn less than their male counterparts, still likely to do the bulk of unpaid labour, and still far more likely to be the victim of sexual assault.

These could have been some of your reactions, Olivia.

You could have also alerted him to the fact that there is an International Men's Day on 19 November, something he could have looked up for himself, but he knew you'd be onto it because you are a proactive woman.

Minor Singles Champ STORY STARTS on BACK COVER, Page 20

It is good to see numbers for Sunday bowls increasing.

The showdown day for the Club Minor Singles arrived and there was much speculation as to who would win between Dennis Longman and Danny Johnson.

Dennis Longman ended any doubt as to who the Minor Singles Champion for 2021 was to be with an emphatic win downing Danny 31-8.

Ouch!

I’m sure Danny would be disappointed with his form today and I believe Dennis was definitely

“on-song” with his.

Congratulations to both players and to all those that contested the event this year.

Thanks also to umpire Col Amos and to marker, Ross Barry.

In other news: After a disastrous 2020 year, the Newcastle District Bowling Association Pennant season kicks off next Saturday, 13 March, with

the First National sponsored, Dolphins fielding teams in Grades four, five, six and seven.

Grade 4 are away at Raymond Terrace, Grade 5 are home to Karuah, Grade 6 are at home to Stockton; Grade 7 are away at Soldiers Point.

3 MARCH The field was down on numbers today with 48 players contesting Wednesday Nominated Triples.

Overcast skies again but fortunately no rain.

There were no surprises as to the winners with a team of the “usual suspects” taking the money.

They were Danny Johnson, Ross Barry and Doug Andrews on 23 points.

The lucky losers were Lon Richards, Bryan McPhie and Keith Smith Jeff Baker scored the much sought-after voucher for lunch at the “Garden Eatery”.

The Club extends thanks to them for their support.

6 March The semi-final round of the Club Championship Minor Singles was played today with Dennis Longman taking on Bob Peady and Luke Gliwa opposing Danny

Johnson.

Unlike the quarter-finals, where all the games were close, today's games were more or less predictable with Dennis Longman having the edge on Bob Peady winning 31-21 and Danny Johnson easily accounting for Luke Gliwa 31-14.

Luke has a great backhand but in a game like singles the ability to play both sides with confidence is a must.

7 March A great morning was enjoyed by a good mixture of 25 players for Sunday Bowls which included some members of the Women’s Pennant teams taking the opportunity to have some additional practice.

The overall winners for the morning being Mark Nightingale, John Atherton and Julie Kennedy.
