Red Cross Trauma Teddy Time

By Sandra MURRAY PAM Richardson has stitched love into all 14 of her Red Cross Trauma Teddies.

Janet Baker, President of the Tea Gardens Red Cross, thanked Pam, stating, “It is a pleasure to thank Pam for the fourteen wonderful Trauma Teddies.

They will all be used at our local Ambulance and Medical Centres to help and be loved by children under stress.”

The Australian Red Cross has distributed around 1 million trauma teddies to children since 1990.

Both making and donating them provides comfort and helps take people's minds off their worries.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the official involvement of women in Surf Life Saving as active patrol members and so it was fitting that the Volunteer of the Year Award was won by Hunter Branch member Debbie Booth from Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest SLS Club.

Debbie is the epitome of the selfless Surf Life Saving volunteer.

She is passionate about education and contributes countless hours to deliver courses to Surf Life Saving members and Community Education programs to tourists visiting the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area.

This season also saw Debbie mentor all the Branch’s trainers, assessors and facilitators through the introduction of the new online Surf Life Saving Australia Bronze Medallion program.

The ever-smiling Debbie Booth was typically humble in receiving her award.

MANY of us have looked to nature in recent times for relaxation and pleasure.

Some have been enjoying feeding the local wild birds.

However, for our wild birds to stay healthy they need to eat the right foods.

Some are nectar feeders, others eat seeds and some eat bugs and small animals.

Laurence Penman of National Parks told News Of The Area, “We discourage people from feeding wild birds mainly due to health impacts on the birds and nuisance caused to neighbours.”

The NSW Department of Planning Industry and Environment say, “Generally, it is not okay to feed wildlife.

The moment's pleasure which you enjoy while watching the birds feed may result in future problems for animals and people.”

Processed seeds, bread and other foods that are not part of an animal's natural diet can make them very sick.

There is a potential knock on effect where

birds that expect to be fed by people can become aggressive, harassing people for food when they are hungry.

Furthermore, hand-feeding can result in the transfer of illness both to and from the animal.

Birds fed by people may also lose their ability to forage for natural foods.

Sustainable Gardening Australia tells us that while putting out seeds is out; creating a permanent water supply is in.

You can also plant to bring the birds in.

Sustainable Gardening Australia recommends a backyard planted with botanic biodiversity as this is more likely to attract a variety of birds, especially if the plants are locally native.

They recommend planting strata layers of vegetation to create a habitat.

The more variety you can provide in the size and selection of plants you grow, the greater the variety of birds and animals you may see turning up at your place.

Healthy writing habits

WRITING and keeping a diary is making a comeback during the pandemic.

Dr Peta Murray, a Vice-Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow at RMIT University, said diary-keeping is having a resurgence, as people find it helps them in troubled times and it could also help others.

“Diary-keeping was like turning to a trusted friend and pouring your heart out, although in a much more intimate way – there was only you, the pen and the paper.

“But now we’re realising it can be done more casually than that, simply as a way to connect with others by connecting with ourselves.”

For some, a daily post on social media is a modern diary.

Reflective writing also has therapeutic benefits, according to Dr Robyn Moffitt, a Lecturer in Psychology in the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University.

Moffitt's research has found reflective writing can help women manage their body dissatisfaction.

After participants wrote a brief diary entry encouraging compassion towards themselves, they were found to be more appreciative of their bodies and motivated to improve themselves further.

Moffitt said from a psychological perspective, there’s evidence keeping a diary is a useful way to engage in healthy self-monitoring of our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

“Reflecting on past events in our mind can often lead to self-critical and unhelpful thinking, or even rumination, which can exacerbate distress.”

“But keeping a diary and writing things down as they happen can provide perspective on the frequency and severity of different events.

“Think of it like discovering an old memory, forgotten clues from your past self that could help you through current challenges,” she said.

Local coach Alicia Cameron told News Of The Area, “The best thing is it is an exchange of energy and takes things out of your head and puts it onto paper.

“You can ponder or write a gratitude journal.

“Most people know what they don’t want, but only a few take time to find what they do: journaling takes the time to think about what you do want to bring clarity and changes your brain waves, taking you into an inspirational and aspirational mind.

“Putting your goals on paper makes you five times more likely to achieve them - it creates accountability,” she said.

Fiona Brown of Youtopia said, “Journaling is such a valuable tool and one that I use regularly with my clients.

“It is a wonderful tool for making clear what is otherwise a random mess of thoughts swimming around in your head. “Journaling can only be done in the present moment which allows you to tap into what is real for you right now, bringing a much clearer perspective rather than trying to recall the past which naturally changes over time through the filters of our mind.

“It is the perfect tool for reducing overwhelm and helping create a positive future,” she said.

Overdose deaths on the rise

THE Penington Institute has released Australia’s Annual Overdose for 2020, revealing that for a fifth year running, more than 2,000 Australians lost their lives to overdose in a single calendar year.

The report also shows a worrying growth in the number of unintentional overdose deaths from 2004 to 2018.

Between 2004 to 2008, 11 people in Port Stephens died from unintentional overdose.

Between 2014 and 2018, 27 people died from unintentional overdose in the same area.

In the Great Lakes region, which includes the Myall Coast, the numbers rose from 7 to 16 across the two periods.

In Newcastle, the numbers rose from 49 to 85.

Mr John Ryan, CEO of Penington Institute, described unintentional overdose deaths as “Australia’s hidden health crisis.”

“By releasing this Report with the most up-to-date data, we’re looking to start a conversation, bring overdose out of the shadows and ultimately reduce harms,” said Mr Ryan.

“In the five years between 2014 and 2018, there were 85 unintentional overdose deaths in Newcastle. That’s an unacceptably high number – and it’s 85 too many.

“The data is clear: the overdose situation in Newcastle is worsening. People are suffering and dying unnecessarily, and all levels of government and society are not doing enough to keep them safe.”

It is important to have a Will which reflects the Willmaker’s wishes.

The law says that a person is entitled to leave his or her assets to whomever he or she wishes. However, situations arise where the Willmaker is subjected to undue influence and (under pressure), makes a Will in such a way that it goes against the Willmaker’s real intentions. The usual reason is that the person who applies the undue influence is benefitting more than they would normally expect to under the Will (without the undue influence). A simple example can be where a child of the Willmaker threatens to not visit the Willmaker or not allow the Willmaker’s grandchildren to visit unless the child (or grandchildren) are favoured in a particular way in the Will.

It can also happen where the Willmaker is relying on a particular individual for

assistance or support and that individual threatens to withdraw the support unless he or she benefits in a particular way in the Will.

The onus of proving undue influence rests with the person alleging that it took place.

It can sometimes be difficult to prove (even though obvious). It follows that if a person is making a Will, then the Willmaker should be interviewed alone.

The Willmaker should be in a position to discuss his or her wishes with the solicitor without any interference from a third party.

There is no obligation for the Willmaker to disclose the terms of the will to anyone.

The Court can set aside a Will if the Judge believes that the Willmaker has been the subject of undue influence.

A celebration of peace AS a celebration of the International Day of Peace on September 21, Peace is Possible are offering free viewings of the Pace e Bene Campaign Nonviolence conference to interested locals.

Pace e Bene, which translated from Italian means ‘peace and all good’, is an independent organisation formed in 1989 by the Franciscan Friars of California to spread the power of peace and nonviolence.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, local group Peace is Possible are unable to run their normal International Day of Peace celebrations and decided to offer an online option for locals wanting to learn more about the global peace movement.

“Because of the COVID restrictions on gathering, we have decided to find what we can online,” said group organiser Norman Ainsworth.

“The Pace e Bene conference commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and includes a memorial which

took place in America, at the site they developed the atomic bomb.

"We at Peace is Possible decided to offer people the opportunity to see that conference.”

The conference runs for seven hours and features a host of speakers from around the globe on the topics of global peace and nonviolence.

“The conference features some very interesting speakers including Richard Rohr, a Franciscan with a peace-based community in Albuquerque. He is always very inspiring to listen to but there is a host of excellent speakers.

“The link that is on the invitation allows you to choose what speakers you would like to listen to,“ said Mr Ainsworth.

Living in an area with bushland comes with extra hazards, both for people and our furry friends.

NSW Health describes ticks as parasites that feed on animal and human blood.

They occur in humid, moist bushy areas.

They are not very mobile but rely on passing animals to both feed on and transport them.

Ticks are known to inject toxins that cause local irritation or mild irritation, however most tick bites cause little or no symptoms.

Tick borne diseases, tick paralysis and severe allergic reactions can pose serious health threats.

Tick-borne diseases occurring along the eastern coastal strip of Australia are Australian Tick Typhus or 'Spotted Fever'.

Early symptoms of tick paralysis in people can include rashes, headache, fever, flu-like symptoms, tenderness of lymph nodes,

Port Stephens local Kerri Rodley removed a tick from a friend this week.

She told News Of The Area, “I had no idea ticks were so tiny and inconspicuous!

“I won't be letting my dog anywhere near bushland

or long grass until the tick season is over as there is no way I would find such a tiny creature in her fur.

“It is amazing that such a tiny creature can kill your four legged best friend!

“Make sure they are on their tick preventative to avoid unnecessary heartache,” she said While Kerri’s friend has recovered, the tick did make her quite ill.

unsteady gait, intolerance to bright light, increased weakness of the limbs and partial facial paralysis.

As the tick engorges on more human blood the tick paralysis symptoms may intensify including after the tick has been removed.

Tick typhus is treatable with antibiotics, although fatalities have been known to occur. In some susceptible people tick bite may cause a severe allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock, which can be life threatening.

If swelling of the face and throat causes breathing difficulties, seek urgent medical attention.

Animals with ticks can have wobbly legs, and have difficulty breathing.

Pet owners should remain vigilant and people should consider wearing insect repellent when in bushland and gardens.

New community garden

TEA Gardens Hotel – a place to stay, eat, and now, garden.

Ben Hanson, owner of Tea Gardens Hotel, said that the idea for an organic community garden had been on his mind for a while.

“It was an idea I had been toying with, and it all just kind of came together when a customer of ours came in for a meal,” said Mr Hanson.

“I was picking up glasses and Thirza was just having lunch, and she asked me if she could go into the garden and fix it up a bit.”

“I mentioned the community garden idea and she jumped right on board, asking to lead it.”

The community garden will consist of a variety of plants, herbs and produce, some of which will be used in the hotel’s restaurant dishes.

It’s open to anyone in the community, with sessions starting on Wednesday 9 September at 9am and running every Wednesday thereafter.

Those attending will need to bring their own gardening tools, and will be required to sign in before heading out to work on the community garden.

In addition to becoming more sustainable, Mr Hanson said that it will offer a great outlet for people to connect over a shared interest.

“During COVID, with everyone feeling a bit stressed, it’s a way to get your hands in the soil and back to nature,” he said.

“People can start talking again, while keeping their distance of course, and just getting back to that feeling of togetherness.”

“So we built a pub”

By Sandra MURRAY OVER six months of social distancing has been exceedingly difficult for many people in our elder communities, especially those who have been unable to leave their aged care homes due to heightened health concerns.

John is one such person, who after months of staying safe in his Estia Health Home was really really missing his mates and the pub.

So, the wonderful staff and residents decided it was time to bring the pub to John.

Using pallet wood, the group secretly built a traditional ‘pommie’ bar, decorated with lights, flags,

streamers and all inside their shared home.

Naturally, beer, wine and cocktail glasses, as well as a light nod to “Cheers” were all included.

Residents affectionately named it the “The Old Dog & Duck”.

They handpainted the name (with a bright yellow duck and dog) onto a traditional timber sign, which was hung with pride behind the new bar.

An incredibly surprised and happy John was invited to cut the ribbon and open the pub for a big night long to be remembered.

Ambos get new space

BULAHDELAH Ambulance Station has constructed a brand new outdoor space for respite, thanks to a $1000 donation of Bunnings gift cards from local community organisation CWA Bulahdelah.

Kylie Paar, CWA Bulahdelah secretary, said that the group is committed to supporting local frontline health care workers.

“We were inspired by simply wanting to help our ambos during the pandemic and we are very passionate about supporting local,” said Ms Paar.

“It’s about helping maintain their mental health.”

Most of the CWA Bulahdelah members contributed to raise funds, including selling homemade products such as crafts and jams.

Ferry service named top attraction

BAY Ferry Tours has been selected as a 2020 Travellers’ Choice Winner

by Tripadvisor.

Teresa Charchalis, Director at Bay Ferry Tours, said that it was a surprise and pleasure for their little ferry service to be considered in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide on Tripadvisor.

“Since we took over operating the ferries in December 2018, we have worked hard to improve every aspect of our customer’s experience.”

“Really, it comes down

to our crew and how they manage each journey,” said Ms Charchalis.

“We carry a lot of first time visitors to Nelson Bay and Tea Gardens, as well as locals who are travelling for errands or just wanting to showcase our beautiful waterways to family and friends.”

Arrests following pursuit TWO people have been arrested following a pursuit through the Hunter region on Tuesday 1 September 2020.

About 11.40am on Tuesday, police were patrolling the Pacific Highway at Karuah when they saw a Mitsubishi Triton with false number

plates.

A pursuit was initiated and terminated a short time later due to the manner of driving.

The ute was again seen on Medowie Road and a further pursuit commenced.

Road spikes were successfully deployed at

Ferodale and the car hit a cement barrier before coming to a stop.

Two people in the ute were arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station.

Police will further allege that the couple were involved in an incident on Sunday 30 August 2020

IT looked like the our annual Port Stephens Literature Awards would be put on ice this year.

TACE coordinator Sue Hamilton said that it was a great relief to see the awards funded for 2020.

“The $300 first prize will now be named the 'Club Lemon Tree Award,’” she said.

Club Championship Triples action on the greens

By John SLATER 2 SEPTEMBER The first Nominated Triples competition in the new season kicked off with a beautiful spring day perfect for bowling.

This coupled with a magnificent Steve Green prepared grass green, one could be forgiven if they thought they had died and gone to bowling heaven.

Fifty bowlers enjoyed the experience, most played triples but there were two games of pairs.

The winners today were taken from the morning games as drawn by Terry Munright.

On the grass, with 12 points, were the pairs combination of Bill Baillie and John Slater and on the synthetic, with 13 points, were John Yabsley, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh.

The Myall Bistro voucher went to lucky Kev Barbie.

Thanks to the Myall Bistro for their continued support.

5 September

It was fine and cool today for the first round of the Club Championship Triples with a stiff south-easterly breeze testing the players.

There were some interesting results with the fancied team of Peter Gurney, Greg Pearson and Jeff Baker not having things all their own way but managing a close win over Graham Reynolds, Bill Jackson and Dennis Longman 22-19.

In another close match, Len Baker, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh defeated Mike Delacca, Neil Kibble and Leigh Hunt, 22-16.

The upset of the round was a great win by Geoff Page, Vic Garlick and Bill Heylbut over the team containing two of last year's defending champions, Dave Perry, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson.

Bill’s team led all the way to win 19-13.

THE Blue ribbon event of the Karuah Bowling Club consisted of a cast from the committee as Club President Dave Austin played Vice President Scott Beaumont with Club Secretary Mark Wilkie as the Marker in the final of the Club Major Singles.

There were many high quality matches from the initial rounds with Dave playing Pete Dennis then Mark Wilkie in the quarter final (31/29) and Marty Mills in the semi final (31/26) and Scott up against Brendan Revell (33/29), then Stewart Bagnall in the quarter final and Sam Rees (31/26) in the semi final.

On Saturday 30 August Scott, playing his first Singles final, settled into his game quickly winning 6 of the first 8 ends to lead 12/2.

Dave then found his length and won the next 5 ends closing the score to being just behind 12/9.

Scott continued with great draw bowls but Dave kept up his fight producing consistent beautiful bowls to turn the score around and after 25 ends was leading 25/18.

Dave, after being Runner Up in this event a number of times, maintained the pressure to secure his first Club Champion title winning 31/22.

Try Croquet

By Marian SAMPSON WHEN we think of croquet we can be transported into a land of fantasy along with Alice and the Queen of Hearts.

Although perhaps on the Myall Coast, Alice and the Queen would have played with pelicans rather than flamingos!

The locals here however tend to use a simple wooden mallet when they play.

There are a range of health benefits to croquet.

For starters you can get out and enjoy the sunshine and soak up some vitamin D. Secondly you get to enjoy good company with other locals.

Croquet is a fun and stimulating outdoor activity for all levels of ability and mobility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness.

The game can be very social or played as a tactical and competitive game.

A game of croquet typically lasts for around 30-60 minutes and it can engage the brain in a similar way that chess does.

The team at the Myall Park Croquet Club are inviting locals to give croquet a try, you can get involved by calling 4997 0816.

The club has just held its AGM at the Uniting Church Hall on 24th August under the strict NSW COVID 19 Safety Plan.

Past President Tony Jones passed on his thanks to Elizabeth Macilquham & the Uniting Church committee for their help.

What's happening around the region

Community Report THE Reference Group has again not been able to meet due to the pandemic, however the committee of the Progress Assn. met for the first time since March this year and I hasten to add, under the strict social rules.

It is anticipated these meetings will continue in order our members are kept abreast of events.

Again, August was a very busy month, however before starting the report, we would like to pay our respects to Peter Economos, who recently passed away.

Peter was a member of the Reference Group and a tireless contributor to this community through his activities in the Rural Fire Brigade and the Pindimar Progress Assn.

He will be sadly missed and our sympathies go to Betty and family.

The recent road fatality on the corner of M1 and Myall Way has revived calls for an overpass.

Since the highway was completed in 2005, very few accidents have resulted using the current turn-off and the chances of achieving a major overhaul

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

are considered minimal.

Following accidents at the corners of Medowie Road and The Bucketts Way, warning lights have been installed at those intersections and we are requesting similar lighting.

Leash free areas for dogs are minimal in this community and it has been suggested that the park in Swan Bay be designated leash free.

Some concern was raised re the dingo population and the area may need fencing.

The question will be raised through the Reference Group.

It has been asked that PA monitor all DA applications, an onerous task and not warranted as the information is freely available under the MidCoast web site.

DA’s are also exhibited at the Council Office and accessible to all members of the community.

The Myall River Art Walk group have recently completed two projects, the first was the installation of ceramic artwork by Chez Rands.

It is located next to Anzac Park and titled “Talking Heads” depicting local ladies having a dip in the ocean.

The second has been the laying of plaques naming each public wharf after the droghers who tied up over 100 years ago.

The ferry wharf has been named “Yalinbah” who carried people and goods throughout the Bay and Lakes in the early 1900’s.

The early arrival of warm weather has resulted in an increase in visitors to our area.

That includes river traffic and both public wharves were at full capacity over the weekend.

We are extremely pleased to advise the Myall Lakes Aquatic Club have arranged the removal of two leaning posts which will provide additional accommodation for small craft.

Council provided the MRAG with two options on the upgrading of the Tea Gardens boat ramp and asked for comment.

Those comments have now been relayed including a third option which calls for a central pontoon ending in a “T”. Those comments are being considered and it must be recalled we are limited to the grant funding of $330K. The dredge campaign in the lower Myall is now in the last two weeks and on schedule.

It has ceased pumping sand onto Jimmys Beach and resumed replenishing the stockpile.

They are shifting 1000cu.m per day and were able to continue operations during the bad weather experienced along The Boulevard a couple of weeks ago.

My observation was that the operators of very heavy equipment along the waterfront were very brave people.

TUESDAY 1st September: Social bowls and Round One of the Club Championship Major Pairs.

Prior to bowls members joined in to wish Club President Deyonne Page a happy "0" birthday.

Format for social bowls Triples and Pairs. Sue Morris, Sheril Johnson and Ingrid Luck defeating Leona Clissold, Dawn Jones and Judi Polak 21 v 10.

The pairs game was evenly matched until the 11th end then Carol Hayden and Jill McBride took control winning by 6 shots, 17 v 11 against Jan Coomer and Bette Saillard.

The winners on the day winning with the highest score were Sue, Sheril and Ingrid. In the Championship games Judy McGavock and Maynie Roberts led all the way against Bev Rhodes and Kayelene Pearson, and ultimately claimed victory 19 v 13.

On the next Rink Lorraine Murphy and Loretta Baker on the 7th end were just 1 shot down, 4 v 5 in their contest v Jean Glover and Karen McPhie.

Unfortunately they only added 4 more shots to their tally, losing 27 v 8. Robyn Beaumont and Dale Winter led all the way against Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas claiming victory on the 16th end 27 v 7.

Lyn Nightingale and Deyonne Page were holding their own till the 9th end then "the tides turned", Pam Gilchrist and Wendy Jones coming out winners 17 v 10.

Thursday 3rd September: Social bowls two games of Pairs 12 ends the results were Dorothy Thompson and Jill McBride 14 v Ingrid Luck and Loretta Baker 8.

Wilma Drake and Lorraine Murphy 12 v Jeanette Emmett and Lyn Nightingale 11.

Round 2 of the Major pairs, once again a decisive victory for Robyn Beaumont and Dale Winter defeating Bev Dunn and Sheril Johnson 26 v 14.

A win also to Jean Glover and Karen McPhie 21 v Pam Gilchrist and Wendy Jones 13. Jan Coomer and Bette Saillard proved to be a too strong a team for Lynda Richards and Judi Polak winning 16 v 9.

Judy and Maynie had a Bye.Thanks to Kathie Rimmer for Umpiring on both days.

Semi Final to be played on Tuesday 8th September Jean and Karen v Robyn and Dale.
