REMEMBRANCE DAY FROM Page 1 terrible years for mankind known as the First World War. Initially known as Armistice Day, Commonwealth Countries changed the name to Remembrance Day after World War II as a day where the fallen of both wars would be remembered.

Now, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year the nation pauses to remember the sacrifices that result from all wars and conflicts Australia has played a role in.

Across the Myall Coast Remembrance Day Services will be conducted, providing an opportunity for locals to gather and reflect on the

terrible cost of conflict on our country.

For those who are unable to make it to an official service it is appropriate to pause for one minute's silence in your home school or workplace at 11:00 am on Friday 11 November to remember those who fell or suffered as a result of conflict.

Bulahdelah has a rich history of commemorating Remembrance Day, and will once again offer a Service at the town’s Cenotaph.

“It will be poignant as some of our members, who have been very active in the community, have passed since the last Service.

“To remember individual people in the Service is very special.”

Karuah Place Plan nominated for Best Strategic Planning Project q Port Stephens Council’s Place Plan for Karuah was nominated for a Best Strategic Planning Project award.

PORT Stephens Council’s Place Plan for Karuah was nominated in the Best Strategic Planning Project category of the NSW Awards for Planning Excellence.

The Awards recognise and acknowledge innovation and excellence in planning across the state, and showcase leading practice across a range of planning disciplines and sectors.

Council’s Strategy and Environment Section Manager Brock Lamont said the Karuah Place Plan is about improving liveability and wellbeing, as well as delivering economic growth for the river-side village, traditionally owned by the Worimi people.

“Through community engagement and consultation, we’ve ensured

the plan recognises the values and priorities of the entire Karuah community including local businesses, community leaders, and the Worimi,” Mr Lamont said.

“The actions and projects in the plan highlight the stunning natural environment that Karuah is known for while balancing the need for new housing, business growth and job

opportunities for locals.

“It’s focused on creating a more connected town centre, improving accessibility to the waterfront, enhancing and protecting the natural environment, and providing additional housing and improved community facilities for all to enjoy.

“We’re proud to be nominated for Best Strategic Planning Project at these awards. It shows us our peers recognise the value of our place planning and implementation approach, and can see the difference it makes to communities at a grass-roots level,” he added.

Farms are often considered as more than just real estate by those who own and work them.

In many cases they are passed down through the generations from parents to their children and as such have sentimental, as well as commercial value. During a separation, this value must be balanced against the non-farming spouse’s right to a fair and equitable property settlement.

Prior to the introduction of the Family Law Act, farms maintained a special status within the Family Courts with an acknowledgement that farms were not only valuable pieces of real estate providing a home for the family, but also business assets generating an income. As such, the Courts largely took the view that as far as possible, orders should not be made that would affect the income earning potential of the

farm or require its sale.

As a consequence, nonfarming spouses could be significantly disadvantaged compared to their suburban counterpart who might otherwise receive a payment from the sale of the matrimonial home.

Today, farms are largely treated as all other real property, however, there remains the view that it is preferable for a business asset such as a farm to be retained by the spouse working the farm, but only if a just and equitable result can still be achieved for both parties. A Court will consider alternatives to forcing the sale of the farm, but ultimately if the alternatives are not just and equitable then the farm will need to be sold, just as any other asset of the parties.

Changed traffic conditions on Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens to carry out safety improvement work at the Myall Way intersection.

Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place while work is carried out to install vehicle activated signage, improve line marking and clear vegetation to

improve sight distance.

Work will start on Monday 7 November and is expected to take four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work will be carried

out from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and the speed limit will be reduced to 80km/h on the Pacific Highway and 40km/h on Myall Way.

To minimise impacts to motorists, some night work will be carried out between 6pm and 7am from Sunday to Thursday.

At night, the speed limit will be reduced to 60km/h on the Pacific Highway and 40km/h on Myall Way.

2500 Boots at Parliament House SEVEN men every day, 2500 every year, take their lives through suicide in Australia with many more attempts being unsuccessful.

According to Beyond Blue, the number of men who die by suicide in Australia is nearly double the national road toll.

This week News Of The Area spoke to Paul Withall from the Zero Suicide Community Awareness Program.

“Suicide should not be a taboo topic, the high number of deaths isn’t just because of mental health, often the high number is a direct result of situational suicide, there is a difference,” Mr Withall said.

“These mens’ deaths are often the result of family relationship breakdown, family court, lack of access to their children, loss of jobs and not enough support services for men,” Mr Withall continued.

Deer are an issue in our region with wild deer munching and trampling gardens, devastating farms and causing problems on our roads.

DeerScan is a purpose-built community website and app for recording deer sightings, damage and control actions.

Members of the public can record sightings including information on the species of deer, observations or direct sightings, hoof prints, scats, deer calls, or camera photos.

The more information recorded, the more useful the deer mapping will become over time.

Trends in movement will start to emerge, which can be used to decide where control should be undertaken.

By recording the damage caused by deer, local authorities can become more informed about where and when problems are occurring.

This can help to guide local control programs.

Once activity is logged control activities can be implemented.

These may include the use of fences or acoustic deterrents, trapping and groundbased shooting.

A wet afternoon as Bulah Scouts visit RFS ON Thursday, 27 October the 1st Bulahdelah Scouts Group took a field trip to the Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service depot.

Brigade Captain Rod Parr explained the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS), and how to use an app called Emergency Plus, which uses GPS functionality built into smartphones to help a Triple Zero (000) caller provide the critical location details required to mobilise emergency services.

Captain Parr also explained the role of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and provided detail on some of the emergencies that the Brigade attends.

The RFS also supplied some towels for the mop up at the end of a fun-filled afternoon/evening.

The Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service is currently looking for volunteers to join their Brigade.

The 1st Bulahdelah Scouts Group is looking for group leaders and parent helpers from within the community.

“You don't have to have kids in the group to volunteer,” Shane said.

Support for young mothers in Tea Gardens AN initiative of the St Stephens Catholic Church in Tea Gardens, the Yummies 4 Mummies (Y4M) group started in March 2010 to provide support for young mothers in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area.

“We saw a need to provide networking and social connections for our young families,” said Y4M coordinator Jan Coomer.

Yummies 4 Mummies gives young mothers of preschool age children a chance to get together on the first and third Mondays through the school term for a chat and a cuppa, and do it all child free.

While they're catching up with other mums, their children are looked after by the older women of the community.

Having started up again in May, Y4M is now calling young mothers across the Myall Coast to join the group and become part of the support network.

The program offers a range of strategies for preparing for a job

“Stylists had some great tips for the girls with hair and makeup techniques and advised them on how to choose a suitable outfit for a formal job interview,” said BCS Year Advisor Linda Drenkhahn.

Sunday Concerts return in Tea Gardens SUNDAY Concerts will return to Tea Gardens on Sunday, November 20, featuring Gaetano Bonfante and Julie Lea Goodwin.

The result was The Broken Hearts Ribbon Day Campaign, which, now in its third year, is being acknowledged in the Port Stephens community on November 10, 2022.

Broken Hearts Ribbon Day is for Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents and extended family members who are alienated from their children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews due to what they believe to be the unfair and unreasonable withholding of children by a parent.

“We would love those who are experiencing the loss of a child through parent alienation to tie a ribbon

around a tree, pole or fence post,” co-founder of Broken Hearts Ribbon Day, Kathie Cooper told News Of The Area.

“Please pick a tree that is in your front yard or is highly visible to the public, tie a ribbon for the children that you love but do not see,” Ms Cooper said.

Participants are also asked to take a photo and share it on Facebook with the hashtag #brokenheartsribbonday in order to create awareness.

It is requested that you remove your ribbons from any tree at the end of the day to save any trees being damaged.

IN 2020, a small delegation of women in Port Stephens and beyond, who had been supporting their sons, partners and husbands through family law court journeys and separation from their children, launched the inaugural Broken Hearts Ribbon Day. Tired of feeling like the plights of their family were invisible, the women decided to come together to let the world know what was happening to their families, and were determined to create change through awareness.

Songs of World War One to broadcast on Myall Coast Radio

By Marian SAMPSON BRIAN Jones, a volunteer broadcaster with Myall Coast Radio, is once again hosting a special Remembrance Day program.

“The radio program, ‘Remember the Armistice’, which so many of you helped to make, and broadcast last Remembrance Day will be broadcast again at 11.00 am on November 11 2022,” Brian said.

“There were so many positive responses to our

efforts of showing the horrors of WW1 through the eyes and emotional words of the poets last year, that it will be broadcast again this year.”

The Remembering The Armistice program is approximately one hour long, and will be followed at around noon by a second program featuring ‘The songs that won WW1’.

This second program tells the story of World War One through the songs of the time.

“Strangely the songs

were almost the antithesis to the war poetry!” Brian said.

The program will feature a range of nostalgic period music, from recruiting songs to romantic ballads and songs expressing sarcasm at the war.

As this program is well over an hour long it has been broken down into four 20 minute sections.

Myall Coast Radio streams online 24/7 and it is anticipated that the program will be listened to as far away as the UK.

Hawks Nest artist exhibits in Manning Regional Art Gallery

q Hawks Nest resident Leonie Reisberg is currently exhibiting her fine art photography at the Manning Regional Art Gallery in Taree.

HAWKS Nest local Leonie Reisberg is currently exhibiting a collection of fine art photographs at the Manning Regional Art Gallery in Taree.

The exhibition is a retrospective collection with over 50 years of photography on display.

The imagery includes a variety of subject matter including people, portraits, objects and places including the beautiful scenery of the Myall region photographed

over the past five years.

The artworks include a mix of monochrome and colour and a blend of photographic styles including polaroids and panoramas.

Leonie Reisberg told News Of The Area, “My favourite piece which is on display is of a little five year old girl who is wearing a tutu in her backyard with a sprinkler on - in the background is her great, great grandmother.”

This child is now a lawyer with a family of her own.

Leonie can often be seen taking images around the

Hawks Nest area, inspired by things that capture her curiosity. The unusual and things that don't quite fit are among the things which Leonie’s work documents.

One of Leonie’s works on display is ‘Your Mind Will Set You Free’ and the image is of a sculpture of Buddha’s head which is partially unpacked, leaving Buddah appearing caged within a crate.

All of Leonie’s artworks have titles and some have stories behind them, they are framed limited editions and are available for sale.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club Results

Excitement is building for the First National Dolphins who are off to

contest the NSW State Pennant titles at Dubbo and Warilla.

What a wonderful experience for them as it has been sometime between drinks for this to happen and there are many players in the Club who may never have the same opportunity.

Not only will the players be representing our Club, but they will also be representing the Newcastle and District Bowling

Association, otherwise known as Zone 2.

5 November Tea Gardens played host today to a team of 21 bowlers from the Burwood RSL BC. A Triples game was contested over 18 ends with prizes for the best team.

Greenkeepers Revenge THE annual ‘Greenkeepers Revenge’ golf day at the Hawks Nest Golf Club is always a fun day played on Melbourne Cup morning.

This year’s event was a corker and provided many challenges for the 60 contestants!

It’s not easy trying to putt into a hole in a sand bunker, over numerous coils of hose, through a barrage of golf carts or even a maze of tee balls – but all players enjoyed their challenges.
