Stephens-Hunter Police District attended a home in Stroud in relation to an unrelated traffic incident.

Upon arrival, police observed several cannabis plants in a detached shed next to the home.

Officers spoke with a 46-year-old man who gave police consent to conduct a search of the home, where it is alleged police located and seized 39 cannabis plants of varying maturity and approximately 3kg of cannabis leaf.

Following inquiries, a 26-year-old man presented himself to Raymond Terrace Police Station about 3pm the same day, where he was arrested and charged with cultivating prohibited plants and possessing prohibited drugs.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 7 February 2022.

“I have been thinking about doing something like this for a long time,” she said.

“We have always wanted to help the community, but thought ‘how can we do

“At least I thought I could start donating some of my commission to worthwhile causes,” Debra said.

“Now that I work for myself, I am able to finally do it!” she said.

On Wednesday, 2 February, Debra met with members of the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed, the first recipients of her donation scheme.

“I thought I would start with the Men’s Shed,” Debra said.

“It is mostly older guys who have retired, who are old-school craftsmen and don’t want to sit down and do nothing.

“They are very, very passionate about what they do.

“The money will help them buy materials, or whatever they need, and

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council’s own ‘Destination Barrington Coast’ has been recognised in the 2021 NSW Tourism Awards.

The outstanding strength, resilience and achievements of the NSW tourism industry were honoured and celebrated on 3 February at the 2021 NSW Tourism Awards.

Supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW, the awards recognised finalists in 29 categories across a range of tourism areas, including Tourist Attractions, Festivals and Events, Ecotourism, Tourism Marketing, Accommodation, Excellence in Accessible Tourism and Local Government Tourism.

MidCoast Council’s

Destination Barrington Coast was awarded silver for Tourism Marketing and Campaigns, and gold for the Local Government Award for Tourism, acknowledging the program’s work to bring tourism back to an area which was greatly impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Destination Barrington Coast is an all-encompassing guide to tourism in the MidCoast region, providing travel tips, field guides, news and hidden gems to discover in the region, Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade and Minister for Tourism and Sport, Stuart Ayres said the event highlighted the industry’s commitment to delivering premium products and experiences to all visitors to NSW.

“I am immensely proud of all finalists of the 2021 NSW Tourism Awards, who have shown remarkable professionalism and dedication over an incredibly difficult period to deliver the best possible outcomes for the NSW tourism industry.

“The winners have shown a particular commitment to excellence and I congratulate them for their innovation and perseverance that these awards represent,” Mr Ayres said.

Mr Ayres said that the NSW Government is committed to supporting tourism operators and events that create jobs, boost regional economies and position NSW as a global destination.

NSW Tourism Industry Council Executive Manager Greg Binskin said the NSW Tourism Awards was a celebration and a beacon for the NSW tourism industry.

group begins the process of relocation to larger, more suitable premises.

“We are really starting the process of moving to a bigger Shed,” David said.

“Every bit of donation we can get is very helpful in sourcing the gear we need to move forward at this moment.

“The Shed itself is too small and no longer suits our needs.

“We are at capacity here, if we have more members coming in, we have to start working outside and there are too many access restrictions for our elderly members.”

Generously, the Bulahdelah Golf Club has offered the Men’s Shed a parcel of land on which to build their new premises, and the Men’s Shed have begun the process of applying for grant funding to finalise the move.

“We are determined that the Shed is going to keep going and prosper,” David said.

“We will be applying for every bit of funding which we can.”

David hopes to build on the stellar work of pastPresident John Lee, who has recently stepped down from the role.

“John has done an absolutely fantastic job,” David said.

“He took over the Shed when it was pretty much on its knees and he has been able to progress it to where it is now.”

David has resided in Bulahdelah for about twelve months, and has enjoyed the camaraderie offered within the walls of the Men’s Shed.

With the first commission donation made, Debra is excited to see the impact her donations can make in the local communities in which she works.

“I don’t know where this journey will take me, I just want to help keep local communities going and support them,” Debra said.

I think the Men’s Shed at Bulahdelah is a great cause, and they do great work,” Debra said.

Newly appointed Bulahdelah Men’s Shed President David Flynn was overjoyed that Debra had thought of his group for the donation.

“It’s fantastic that someone like Debra is backing the Men’s Shed, it's been a bit of a battle, especially through the Covid times.”

This donation, along with other recent generous donations from the community, will help to support the diverse work of the Shed, which can range from building wildlife boxes for local conservation groups, to restoring household cabinetry or repairing a family cubby house.

“We take on pretty much anything,” David said.

“Anyone who turns up with a need, whether it be in the Shed or on-site, we will do our best to help them.”

The move to ‘Zoom’ conferences, whilst more recent and largely becoming mainstream due to the Covid pandemic, has also been a major change. I still enjoy meeting with clients in person however, having just completed a Zoom conference with clients on a family holiday on the NSW South Coast (including completing a remote identity check), it does show the benefits of this technology and demonstrate that we truly can service our clients wherever they are located.

Electronic conveyancing has also been a significant change in respect of practicing in property law.

Contracts are signed with electronic signatures and we no longer meet with the other parties’ solicitor and banks

for ‘settlement’ to hand over bank cheques and paper Certificates of Title (which also don’t exist anymore). I won’t even start on settlements involving ‘old system title’ and reviewing wax sealed deeds on parchment dating back to the 1800’s to confirm a good root of title.

Although the tools of the profession have changed, the profession itself largely remains the same. I continue to enjoy working in a largely respectful and collegiate profession whilst seeking to achieve the best outcomes for my clients.

By Marian SAMPSON FOR businesses like the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens, COVID-19 has hit hard.

It’s not just the kids that have missed out on excursions and overnight camps, it's the staff at the venues that provide experiences that create memories which stay with school students through their lives.

Now businesses impacted by school COVID safety measures in late 2021 have access to a grant program to help them get back on track for 2022.

The $14 million grant program will be available to businesses whose services schools were restricted from accessing in Term 4 of 2021.

The restrictions primarily impacted overnight camp providers and music education instructors and services.

sectors that rely almost entirely on schools for income and provide a crucial educational experience for students.

“The grants will provide eligible businesses and not for profit organisations one-off payments equal to 40 per cent of their decline in Term 4 2021 turnover compared to previous years, up to $15,000,” Mr Kean said.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the grants would help organisations restart and refocus on delivering quality programs for NSW school students.

“I know just how hard the pandemic has hit small business, and for those offering camps and some music programs, their recovery is just beginning as schools return under new COVID-smart settings,” Ms Mitchell said.

Guidelines for the grants will be available in February, with businesses expected to apply for grants in April through their Service NSW for Business profile.

Help develop the MidCoast Aboriginal Action Plan

q MidCoast Council is holding pop-ups across the region to encourage community conversation and participation.

MIDCOAST Council is inviting the community to participate in the drafting of its first Aboriginal Action Plan.

“We value our diverse community and want to strengthen our relationship with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

“It’s especially important to us to support strong and enduring local indigenous cultures.”

Mr De Szell said the development of the plan is important for the MidCoast community, with 6.9 per cent of residents identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, above the NSW regional average of 4.7 percent.

“We want to begin a conversation with Aboriginal communities in the MidCoast about what’s important and how we can improve outcomes together across a range of every-day experiences.”

Mr De Szell said Council is keen to find out how the priority areas identified by the State and Federal Government are relevant for the MidCoast.

These priority areas are health and wellbeing, education training and employment, housing, safe communities and justice, inclusion and participation, and family and culture.

“We’ll also be talking to agencies who have programs in place to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people on the MidCoast, and finding out how we can work together to better deliver for our communities,” said Mr De Szell.

“We’re holding pop-ups across the region to encourage community conversation and participation, and encourage members of the community to come along for a chat with our Aboriginal community development officers.”

The pop-ups will be COVID-safe, with check-ins, sanitiser and social distancing

in place.

Alternative arrangements can be made to ensure everyone who wishes to participate gets the opportunity.

“These vouchers will help ease the financial burden and allow greater access to BASC services,” Mr Bromhead said.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said that both providers and users of BASC would benefit from this announcement.

“These vouchers are all about providing affordable access to care for families, particularly after a tough two years that have disrupted access to school and BASC. “Every family with children at a NSW primary school is eligible for one voucher per child, which will provide each child with

approximately 60 sessions of free BASC,” Ms Mitchell said.

The NSW Department of Education has partnered with Service NSW to roll out the program, which will be delivered through Service NSW and will follow a similar premise to the current Dine and Discover Vouchers.

Providers and customers can register and apply online via a MyServiceNSW account, in the app, or by visiting their nearest Service Centre.

Vouchers can be applied for from 28 February to 30 September 2022, with eligible providers of before and after school care registrations from 9 February to 30 September 2022.

Before and after school care vouchers PARENTS and caregivers of children aged four to thirteen years old that attend a NSW primary school will benefit from a new $155 million program for Before and After School Care (BASC) services to provide greater support and access to BASC services.

The $500 voucher helps to reduce the out-of-pocket costs for before and after school care by contributing to the parent gap fee component of their session fees.

VISITORS to the Myall Lakes National Park will be able to pay their vehicle entry fee via Park’nPay as changes to the app roll out over the next couple of months.

Park’nPay is an initiative by the NSW Government in the form of a smartphone app.

With the intention of creating a single integrated app for parking, Park’nPay

provides a convenient way to pay for your parking right from a mobile phone, rather than using the physical meter.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the NSW Government’s Park’nPay app will be extended to allow people visiting national parks to use the app when purchasing their vehicle entry fee on-line.

Emergency Services Update IT’S time for the weekly emergency services update for the Myall Coast region.

Vandalisation of Stroud Helipad On 1 February 2022, it was reported that the brand new Helipad in Stroud had been vandalised by reckless driving and tyre marks.

The Helipad was donated

by John Kiddle and the team at MidCoast Under Road Boring who donated time, labour and parts.

Operation Australia Day This week, officers from the Port Stephens Hunter Police District wrapped up Operation Australia Day. Just under 7000 random breath tests were conducted by the Police District and Highway Patrol over the twelve-day period.

Myall River Rescue Last week, Marine Rescue Port Stephens received a request for assistance from a 5 metre open runabout who was having engine issues just at Corrie Island, south of the short cut in the Myall River.

The radio base advised the skipper that help was soon on the way.

With three adults and two children on board no time was wasted, and the Marine Rescue team headed towards the distressed vessel.

Once on scene, the team worked to tow the vessel to Hawks Nest Boat Ramp.

World Cancer Day advocacy group All.Can Australia is encouraging a shift to broader cancer care navigation to ensure more Australians receive support as they navigate the health system following a diagnosis of cancer.

The proposed cancer care navigation model is designed to provide guidance to all cancer patients - regardless of cancer type, patient demographic or location – as they traverse the health system.

In partnership with research partner Healthcare Management Advisors (HMA), All.Can Australia has been focusing on cancer care navigation.

According to a survey of Australians with cancer undertaken by All. Can, patients experience significant confusion and distress when moving through the health system.

In contrast, patients with access to cancer navigation were better able to overcome barriers to care.

The much-needed focus on cancer care navigation aligns with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) World Cancer Day theme, ‘Close the Care Gap’, which is about raising awareness of the equity gap that affects many people with

New Cancer Care Navigation System WITH one in three Australians diagnosed with cancer throughout their lives there is an increasing need to shift to broader access for cancer care navigation to support more Australians.

New research and economic modelling has revealed that there may be up to $46 million in savings to the health system per year by implementing a non-cancer specific, care navigation model to support Australians diagnosed with cancer.

If adopted, the new cancer care navigation model could deliver incalculable benefits to over 150,000 Australians living with cancer.

PORT Stephens is about to get a little bit safer for surfers and swimmers with accredited boardrider clubs receiving trauma kits through a new safety program initiative with every accredited surf school and boardriders club in NSW receiving new trauma and first aid kits.

All 15 New South Wales boardrider clubs have been presented with state-ofthe-art trauma first aid kits as part of a collaborative project between Surfing NSW and the NSW State Government.

The presentation coincided with the Australian Boardriders Battle final at Newcastle Beach.

The custom kits, which are designed for use in the event of an immediate, life-threatening trauma incident were designed in collaboration with Surfing NSW staff, and include

Myall U3A Enrolment Day Success THERE was a recent rush at the doors of the Hawks Nest Community Centre for the enrolment of Myall U3A members.

It was a joy to see so many people lined up, enthusiastically discussing the various courses on offer.

People had the opportunity to meet their co-ordinators and to catch up with old U3A friends after the long summer break.

LA Nina has increased rainfall across Australia this summer but it hasn’t stopped the increased risk of the sun and water.

As the country reaches midsummer and Australians continue spending more time outdoors, St John Ambulance NSW is urging Australians to stay safe.

Bulahdelah Community Rallies Support For Local Family

A LOCAL family has been dealt a devastating blow.

Single mum Belinda Cunningham has been diagnosed with lung and bowel cancer and has been only given a few weeks to live.

Routine changes will make a big impact and help your children get back into the right physical and mental mindset for school.

Good nutrition is essential for learning, and a healthy and balanced diet that provides children with the nutrition they need is essential to support them as they go back to school.

Studies frequently demonstrate that diet is tied closely to classroom function, so it is important to ensure that your child is getting the right balance of food groups that will help them perform at optimal levels in the classroom.

“Work with your child to create a list of what they would want to achieve in 2022.

“By setting goals, you are putting them into a ‘do’ mindset.

“Tying this closely to their own desires and achievements will also really help boost their motivation levels.”

“Social anxiety and fears

SCHOOL is back and a children’s psychologist has revealed five tips to help kids jump back into learning.

After two years of changing routines, homeschooling, increased device usage, and prolonged social isolation, new research from SFI Health reveals that two thirds (67%) of Aussies are worried this will have longterm impacts on children’s health and wellbeing in the classroom in 2022.

The research, which was conducted with over 2,000 Australians, also found; one in three Aussies (33%) believe that the various changes to school routines will impact children’s learning, as well as increase their social/ general anxiety (23%) and decrease their focus (22%); one quarter of parents (23%) identified being unhappy with online learning, as it led to their children being more distracted and unable to focus on the task at hand; a large majority (66%) of parents claimed their children spent way too much time on screens during lockdown, which they fear will continue to impact their cognition back at school; and 96% of parents have tried different strategies to help their children reduce screen time including time limits, digital detoxes and tactile activities.

When it comes to the backto-school season, leading children’s psychologist Deirdre Brandner believes that one of the biggest

Bulahdelah Golf Club Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

WEDNESDAY February 2 saw the first ladies comp for the year, and they played the 2021 Mug of Mugs. M.South won the day with 69n from B.Newton with 70n. Bernie won the Mug of Mugs, NTP and Jackpot The Vets missed out this week – too wet on Thursday.

Saturday February 5 was

a Single Stableford Medley.

Only 17 players braved the damp conditions (6 members went to Karuah for their Open Day) and the winner was T-L.Smith with 33 pts from G.Buck with 32 pts on a c/b from S.McNaughton & M.Haynes.

NTPs were J.Stellema, S.South & G.Grainger.

Long drivers were J.Stellema, T-L.Smith &

S.McNaughton – who also won the Jackpot Well done to staff and volunteers who have spent many hours digging and repairing drains lately making play in the wet much more enjoyable.

The new dam near the 5th hole is now full and has already caught some unsuspecting players

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By John SLATER TEA Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News 2 February The weather forecast was not good; however, 51 players attended for the usual Nominated Triples competition today.

The first matches were completed, and the afternoon session had just commenced when the rain came. The

winners were all determined on the morning matches and those with the highest winning score were in the money.

On the grass with 14 points were Tony Butler, Col Amos and Mark Hair and on the synthetic, with 27 points, Brian Newberry, Leigh Hunt and Neil Kibble were successful.

Eatery voucher as well.

5 February The Final of the Major Singles Championship was rescheduled and played this morning with Barry Goode taking on the current Club Champion, Jeff Baker.

With about 60mm of rain having fallen since Wednesday and showers still hanging around the championship grass green was always going to play a bit heavy.

To make matters a little

Weather was up and down but still a lovely setting at Mumms on the Myall.

The winner with the least number of 3 putts was Fran Henderson so we all congratulate her.

Six other prizes were given out as well as tips on

"how to putt" from Tiger Woods.

Apologies on the day from Barbara Birmingham and Donna O'Brien, we also welcomed new member Robyn Richardson for 2022.

TUESDAY 1 February : Just 19 bowlers today, the hot humid weather conditions a deterrent to many of our members.

Format for play 2 games 3 bowls Triples and a game of 3 bowls Pairs, each 18 ends.

A game of “turn around Singles” 3 bowlers, 12 ends.

A drawn match 13 all, for Sheila Rattray, Ingrid Luck and Maynie Roberts v Lyn Nightingale, Dawn Jones and

more interesting a howling southerly added to the mix.

I missed the final, but I am told that Jeff was quickly away and established a 13shot lead in the early stages.

To his great credit, Barry fought back in the middle stanzas closing to trail by just one shot 22-23.

As I have seen on many occasions, Jeff recovered quickly, moved up a gear and closed the match out winning the 2022 Major Singles

Tony Jones told News Of The Area, “Following many months of restrictions and delays the Club will hold a General Meeting on Monday 14 February at 11am.

“All club members are

requested to attend unless they are unwell or restricted with COVID-19 or have a current medical condition barring them from attending.

“Please advise the secretary at mpcc0219@ gmail.com if unable to attend,” he said.

The members of the club are truly enjoying playing on the lawns regularly once more with many members arriving on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, enjoying the company and sporting exercise.

The club offers its congratulations to Joan Sode for achieving top points in the January competition.

A close contest till the 12th end in the Pairs game, the score here was Lynda Richards and Bette Saillard 12 v Sheril Johnson and Robyn Beaumont 10.

winning by 6 shots 21 v 15.

Karen McPhie, Jean Glover and Dale Winter played the Singles game, results are as follows Jean defeated Karen 15 v 6 and Dale 9 v 6.

Dale had a win against Karen 13 v 5.

Liv Everingham, Dot Dallas and Pat Baker took home the prize money by drawing a card.

Dot Dallas was the winner of the raffle, thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize.

Thursday 3 February: No social bowls played due to rain.

Championship 31-22.

Members were full of praise for Barry who put up a wonderful fight despite the conditions, which I’m sure did not suit him.

Congratulations to both players and indeed to all who participated in our “blue ribbon” event.

For Jeff, this will be his 5th Major Singles title and he will have his name again added to the “Noel Cover Memorial Trophy”.

Barry will be in demand to form a team to compete in the Club Championship Pairs commencing soon.

On his current form he will do well.

Next weekend 7 Tea Gardens teams will take on 7 teams from Northmead BC in an inaugural Trophy tournament with matches scheduled for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

GAZUMPING occurs when a potential buyer makes an offer, the owner accepts the offer, but then also accepts an offer from another potential purchaser. The other customer becomes the successful purchaser.

It is 100% the decision of the Seller whether they instruct their agent to continue showing the property after an initial offer is accepted or not, and they are legally allowed to freely make this decision. But by law Real Estate Agents are obliged to put all offers forward to an owner regardless of whether there is already an offer accepted.

Therefore the owner may then accept someone else’s offer as well. This offer may not be higher than yours, but they may have a better financial situation, ie cash buyers as opposed to having to obtain finance, a longer or shorter settlement period, which may suit them better etc etc.

A purchase of a property is not secured until exchange of contracts is processed.

That is that both the buyer and seller have each signed the contract of sale and the buyer has paid their deposit, usually 10%.

We will be setting up some formal elected to MidCoast Council in 2017, and was Deputy Mayor for two years. There was a Council meeting last week I acknowledge there are challenges ahead and that the community wants to see to decide a range of matters.

I am committed to listening and to activity for the MidCoast area.

There was $164 million of development working hard to address what is important to approved in the six months to December the community.

I welcome any input you may have on 2021, which was significantly higher than the previous period. this.

We are all seeing the increased demand I have spent my first weeks as Mayor in discussions with Councillors and staff about for housing in the area.

It is pleasing to see that our average DA the need to improve our communications, consultation, responsiveness and determination times, so far this year, are lower than the previous year, and that the accountability.

It is great to hear from you and read that you are embracing a healthy home-grown lifestyle. Well done. What is less appealing is your willingness to consider replacing your chooks simply because they haven't yet laid any eggs.

The fact you have named them Trinity and Karl means they are no longer livestock, they are family members, and family members have responsibilities, but they also have rights.

Are your chooks free ranging? (You sound like the sort of environmentally conscious person who would ensure the chooks have lots of space to roam). If so, I think you should know that despite their cute, clucking noises, chooks are masters at subterfuge. They could, in fact, be laying in a secret location and there may be a whole stockpile of eggs that you won't find until you detect a rancid, rotting smell.

Chooks also mature at different stages. Your chooks may not be willing to lay and will probably do so when they are good and ready thank you very much (did I mention that, apart from being tricksters, they can be quite stubborn?).

There is also a slim chance that your chooks have a genetic defect and/ or are roosters and/or are anti-vaxxers that are not clucking, they are actually chanting 'my body, my choice', which is a terrible form of appropriation that does little to advance their cause, but there's no telling some chooks.

Laser Master Championships PORT Stephens hosted what has been described as a great weekend on the water with

the NSW/ACT Laser Masters Championship held.

There were almost 130 entrants for the weekend which created a visual spectacle on the Bay. Spectators on Saturday

would have also seen the fleet of Port Stephens Yacht Club yachts racing, with the two fleets managing to avoid each other.

There were a number of Bay Sailing Centre and

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club members racing in the event.
